but for a wayward son

A thirty-to-forty foot drop isn't that big a deal by the standards of Force users. Very easily survivable with only a minimum of effort. A basic exercise. Just exert a touch of will, slow the fall, reinforce the body, land gracefully. Simple.

However, it's considerably harder when one is naked, with their wrists are tied to their ankles, head pulled back with a gag stuffed in their mouth and still aching all over from their master's tender attentions in the leadup to getting tossed ungently out of the hovering ship.

Salacis manages it, because she's awesome and very powerful, but it is perhaps closer than she would like to admit. As she hears the twin clunks of her tonfa hitting the ground nearby, she manages to wriggle over onto her back to glare cutely balefully at Sidious standing in the airlock.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have fun exploring the ruins!" her total asshole of a Master shouts down. "Contact me when you've found something interesting!"

Permalink Mark Unread

How about this extremely pointy collection of stones she's landed on? They've certainly grabbed her attention.

Probably her grumbled, muffled invective doesn't make it all the way up there, but her expression does a fine job.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the more interesting your find, the greater your reward will be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grrrr.

Sidious is lucky Salacis thinks she's so pretty.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

"Remember what you've learned," she warns, still far too amused, and the ship begins lifting away from her apprentice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Terrible. Horrible. Worst master ever.

Salacis starts wriggling free of her binds, then remembers that she has lightsabers. She summons one of her beskar-plated blades to her hand and snips through the connecting rope in a fuchsia blaze. Springing to her feet, she stretches out and starts looking around. (She's going to leave the gag in, just for fun.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The area she's been dropped on is a red, dusty plain. There's ruins rising in the distance, the rubble of buildings of clay brick tumbled at the feet of an imposing black pyramid, so dark that it reflects none of the hazy light. It's not very tall - that feels odd, like this thing should dominate the landscape, the planet, not sit in a sea of clay dust.

There's not much else, especially not interesting. The scraggly outlines of what might be trees a good distance away from the ruins, some rock formations...

Permalink Mark Unread

All right, well. That's probably a Clue. Not like she was dumped here randomly, after all. So something... inside the pyramid, probably. She's got some walking ahead of her.

She scoops up her other tonfa and heads pyramidwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

The distance is farther (and hotter, and dustier) than it looks. Hopefully she remembers her training on pulling on the Force for endurance (or speed, even).

The ruins... Don't seem that interesting, really. Lots of crumbled bricks, some faded evidence of carvings in a script or with stylized motifs Salacis doesn't recognize, some small metal objects, fragments of broken pots... They're a bit weird, though. Like all the houses just folded in on themselves.

The pyramid doesn't have any glaringly obvious entrances, even once she gets closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once it's clear how far she'll have to go, she does draw on the Force to get her there healthy and in good time. Free tanning session, given her lack of clothes.

She pokes idly at the ruins as she passes, memorizes a couple instances of the carvings just in case. She circles the base of the pyramid once, looking for doors. And if that doesn't yield results... she'll try climbing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

No visible doors, no.

She's not really able to get purchase to climb it, though. It's pretty bizarrely smooth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hrrrmmm okay back to the base. Any kind of... carvings, suspicious indents, caves in the ground?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's some differences in the rubble piles - and she gets a creeping sense of unease when she's exploring one particularly destroyed section, where it looks like the roads suffered a lot of damage, too, not just the buildings. The ground's uneven, almost sagging.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmm.

What if she back up a reasonable distance, levitates this handy chunk of rock over there and... drops it!

Permalink Mark Unread

Thud!

And then there's a little shiver, a shake - and the ground starts collapsing.

She should maybe get a bit more distance. Maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! Back back back she is scrambling backwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sinkhole stops eventually - and she gets clear of it.

That's a pretty massive hole, really. It goes straight to the edge of the pyramid, spreads most of the way along that edge, and then arcs out in a half circle. It looks deep, too - and she can see more of the pyramid now, though she can't see where the bottom of the edge of the sinkhole nearest her is, not when she's this far from it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ha! Just like she planned it. Time to see if there's anything more like a way in further down the hole.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing in clear line of sight - but she can't see all the way to the bottom. She could jump in, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

In she jumps!

Permalink Mark Unread

She falls a very long way. (It's pretty lucky she just got a refresher on slowing herself with the Force, actually. That fall would've been fatal several times over otherwise.)

And the bottom is, of course, pitch black - she lands on a rough pile of clay dirt and shards of brick, going by the feel and also the sudden cloud of cloying dust.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was probably predictable, given what was on the surface, now collapsed down here. Salacis coughs around her gag, waving the dust away from her face.

She spins her left-hand weapon around so the blade points away and ignites it, holding it high to use as a flashlight.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's: a lot of rubble!

...And possibly an indent over there, at the base of the pyramid. Or the top of one; it's covered by rubble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect. Now all she has to do is clear enough rubble to get at it.

Which is, uh, a lot easier to say than do but there's no one to help but her so she'd best get to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The pile's pretty unsteady, and also extremely deep and contains a lot of small bits that look and feel like they should be more similar than they are, and every move sends up a cloud of clay dust. Her Master would probably call it a good exercise.

Salacis does, however, gradually get enough of the opening clear that she can see most of what's probably a set of double doors.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are the doors the same kind of stone as the pyramid?

Permalink Mark Unread

No - they don't absorb the light from her lightsaber nearly as much, and they seem more metallic than anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

So probably she could cut through them? Clearing the rest of this is going to be tedious...

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she's gotten the pile mostly low enough she could squeeze through just the top.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect. Here goes, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

The top of the door fortunately provides no resistance to her lightsaber. There's a drop beyond that - again pretty far, but not nearly as bad as her fall onto the rubble, and this time she hits a smooth floor. There's no dust in here, too, except what she brought with her, and it's cold.

The walls look like they're made of the same dull material as the door, and have carvings in them - different from the ones on the surface. They look like potential star charts, actually, just not any Salacis immediately recognizes.

She's at one end of a long hallway, and her lightsaber's glow doesn't go far. She doesn't see any hazards right now, but - that doesn't mean there aren't any, and the hairs on the back of her neck are rising for some reason.

Permalink Mark Unread

Brrrr. Chilly.

Hand navigation isn't her strongest point, but she knows the most common references for each sector. She takes a moment to see if anything looks even vaguely familiar. Making sure to keep half an eye open for zombies or mummies or terentateks, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm...

Sort of? This looks vaguely like the charts for this sector, actually - with either a very inaccurate artist or minus at least a few hundred thousand years.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Huh. That's. Extremely odd.

Not quite interesting enough, though, not without a full explanation for why it's here, Salacis thinks. Which means she's gotta head further into the dark.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets a sense of creeping, impending doom when she's about a hundred feet down the corridor...

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeeeeaaaah okay she's gonna stop. Pause, back up, take stock, try to triangulate to source of the doom more precisely.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's ahead of her! Seems to be something about the corridor itself - at least, it isn't getting bigger or smaller or more or less urgent on its own.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's... less than ideal. Probably some kind of trap.

She doesn't have any of the equipment Kayra, her Mandalorian mentor, taught her to use, but she does have the Force. So maybe she can- set off the trap remotely?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm... Maybe. She'll need to poke it a lot more - she isn't sure exactly where it is, and her sense of the hallway slips through her fingers like ink.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she just... push with the Force like she's walking and move that pressure down the hall?

Permalink Mark Unread

She successfully creates a strong gust of air! She possibly was not actually trying to do that.

She also successfully sets off a pressure plate - but nothing immediately happens, except her sense of dread getting a little bit worse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Welp.

Probably okay for her to walk down the hall herself, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

That doesn't seem to present any new problems, though it's a bit hard to differentiate possible causes of Impending Doom.

She hits a massive room before the doom catches up to her - her hallway lets out onto a walkway around a deep pit. The ceiling and floor and other walls are all outside of what her saber illuminates, but she can see the murky outlines of walkways on other levels and crossing the pit.

Permalink Mark Unread

This place is pretty spooky.

Are there any other entrances on her level?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that she can see.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right.

She'll have to pick a level to jump to, then. Let's try... going up, for a change.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sense of danger suddenly gets very high while she's mid-air - and there's a bright flash as blaster bolts fly at her from numerous directions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eep!

She twists, tucks in, spins her blades to ward off as many bolts as she can- fortunately her weapon of choice is well-suited to this sort of defensive action. She lands in a roll on the level below the one she was aiming at, lightly scorched.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a moment of breathing room, a loud hum - and then another barrage.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's slightly better set to handle this one, and there are fewer angles she needs to cover.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't really let up entirely while she's standing there, though there's regular pauses - staggered between the sources of the bolts - probably to let the cannons cool down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once she catches the pattern, she starts using the pauses to maneuver herself towards an exit, out of this room.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can find another hallway!

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as a) there are no blasters in the hallway and b) it doesn't lead her back to the Big Black Pit of Death, she's all right with refocusing her explorations here.

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems to lead to barracks, mostly, and a small access staircase in a back corner - heading one floor up, or five down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. Last time she went up, she started getting shot out, so she guess she'll surrender to the inevitable and try the staircase down, paying attention to her her Sense of Doom when it gets extremely strong and imminent, but otherwise basically just moving forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

This doesn't get her shot at! Immediately.

She has to navigate - and sometimes just fight - several other apparently automated systems, but she makes it through. She gets very deep by the time she comes to an enormous, egg-shaped room built around a strange pod.

The pod is different from the rest of the pyramid or the settlement outside - there's strange symbols traced on its surface, flares of color, and it's otherwise crystalline and mostly clear, though the image of a naked human woman curled into a fetal position inside is distorted by the numerous prisms.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Whoa.

This definitely counts as interesting. Probably more interesting if Salacis can get her out of the pod... Is there a control panel or something?

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't see one.

But the pod feels very weird to more than just Salacis's mundane senses. (Like potential, almost.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. Yeah.

The question is how to bring that potential forth...

(She pokes the pod where one of the pretty patterns coverges.)

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a chime, felt more in the Force than in her ears. It sends shivers through Salacis's body, and the pod doesn't change visibly, but... That potential feels more imminent. Like a wave about to crash.

Permalink Mark Unread

That did something.

Let's try another poke.

Permalink Mark Unread

A deeper chime, and another and another each time she pokes -

And then the pod starts to glow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps back a bit. To give it room to glow.

Permalink Mark Unread

It shimmers and - unravels, almost, unfolding in an eerily perfect harmony, and the woman inside unfolds herself, stepping out of the egg and then rising to her full height, facing Salacis.

She's still naked, and, also, incredibly tall. Easily two feet taller than Salacis, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis looks up (and up and up) at the woman.

"Wow," she says, or tries to. It comes out more like "Aaoah". She forgot she still has the gag in.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps towards Salacis (who is, actually, at exactly the right height that the woman's breasts could easily rest on the top of her head), and then reaches up and touches the strap of the gag, tilting her head curiously.

"Is this traditional clothing in your culture?" she asks, voice strong and crystalline.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Blush!!

"Uhuh. Urmh." She makes to gather the presence of mind to reach up and loosen the gag to let it slip out of her mouth, hanging around her neck. "Um. No. It isn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Does it indicate something, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That I'm a brat who's too loud for her own good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "You were very insistent in waking me from standby mode."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aheh. Um. Sorry about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hardly mind," she says, "So long as you can take me for a ride out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that. Give you a ride. Out, I mean. Off the planet. We'll have to get out of this pyramid first."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"I don't recognize this place..." she says, then turns back to her pod and begins folding it up smaller.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wasn't like this when you, uh, landed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns back to Salacis and shakes her head. "No. There was a deep valley here - a river valley, surrounded by green mountains."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've been inside a while, then. There's no more river. Or green. Or mountains, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, my sensors are indicating such..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have sensors?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," she says. "That is how I know your language - some of the sensors I left in assorted systems have kept up with periodically sampling transmissions, though updates to me are by necessity intermittent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. That makes sense." Wait no it doesn't she's not in her pod anymore so how is she getting updates about what her sensors are indicating? "Are you like, a droid or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "The definitions of your galaxy do not account for what I am particularly well. I am not an organic as you would understand the term, however, but I am not a droid either, I would say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A something, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh for sure."

"Uh, about getting out of here... I can get us off-planet but there are some defense systems in the building that I may have um, provoked a little bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How dangerous are they?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on how vulnerable to blasters you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exceptionally so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be fine, then. There are a lot of blasters but not much else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can protect you," she says, "If you're vulnerable."

Permalink Mark Unread

She holds up her tonfa. "I managed to get in, didn't I? I've got my lightsabers."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, eyeing the lightsaber with interest.

"Good," she says. "Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to retrace her footsteps. Salacis makes sure to mention when they're about to hit a location with a trap she's tripped before.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exceptionally helpful.

Getting out is much easier than getting in was - the woman does in fact seem immune to blaster bolts. She also, apparently, has an energy weapon embedded in her left forearm, which she uses to very precisely take out anything firing on them.

Of course, getting out of the pit once they've exited the pyramid is a bit more complicated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How good are you at jumping?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up... And up... And up...

"Not that good," she says, wryly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should be able to give you a lift up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How good are you at jumping?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't go all the way at once, but..." she traces a path out by pointing. "There to there to there, then to the top." (Her indicated footholds probably wouldn't hold someone very much bigger than her. And some she'll still be balancing on one foot.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be in your capable hands, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So to speak."

Salacis takes a moment to concentrate, gathering her power, then reaches out with a lifting gesture and begins raising the other woman up through the air to the top of the pit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She holds fairly still! Though she looks around - and down - with clear interest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, using the dark side means Salacis can channel her appreciation of the view directly into her efforts, rather than it being a distraction.

Once her passenger is safely out of the pit, she gathers her energy around her again and begins hopping up to join her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She backs up a good distance from the edge. And, once Salacis has landed on firm ground again: "Impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Small grin. "And where's our ride out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to call her. Give me a moment."

Salacis isn't great at this, so she kneels down to meditate on her connection with Sidious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, Sidious is almost terrifyingly good at this, and once Salacis makes that first tentative connection, she reaches back - encouraging Salacis's efforts, guiding her in reaching out -

'Have you found something, Apprentice?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yes, Master. A sleeping woman, from far away and a very long time ago. I think the pyramid might have been constructed around her-' she sends over a mental impression to add to her description.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis gets a silent, warm glow of pride in return.

'Return to where I dropped you off, Apprentice,' she commands.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yes, Master.'

She cuts off the connection and stands, dusting her knees. "We've got a bit of a walk to meet our ride," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I didn't sense any transmissions," she notes, tone curious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I used the Force."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fascinating." She smiles. "Perhaps you could tell me about how that works on our walk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm no expert, but I'll try. We're headed that way," she points.

Permalink Mark Unread

"One doesn't need to be an expert to have interesting ideas," she teases as she starts walking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Off!

"'Interesting ideas' and 'explaining how it works' isn't always the same thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But both are rewarding to learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you pick the right teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have good judgment, fortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "That's useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of many useful skills I have, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are some others? Oh, and do you have a name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Rodanthe," she says. "And I'll show you mine if you show me yours - starting with your name, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Darth Salacis. Darth is a title."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Salacis," she says, testing out the sound of it in her mouth. "A very lovely name."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

"Thanks. Rodanthe's pretty, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says. "I chose it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Now, Salacis had said she would explain the Force...?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she'll do her best. The Force is hard to explain.

It's like this... mystical energy pervading the galaxy that some people can manipulate. Her master sometimes talks like it's alive, like it has thoughts and desires. Salacis wouldn't go so far as to say it can talk, but... sometimes it kinda feels like it's poking you? Making you notice stuff you might not otherwise or drawing attention to certain details.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fascinating... The greatest power she's known is the Maker, who is both like and unlike that - a intense and powerful will, and a source and embodiment of energy, but one singularly driven...

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis has never heard of anything like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I traveled from another galaxy, originally," she says. "Much here is strange."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't think anyone's every come from another galaxy before. Or left this one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm special, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very special, too."

"Others have tried to wake me. You are the first to succeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess we have a connection of destiny."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "An interesting way to look at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's romantic, really, if you think about it. You, the mysterious and powerful stranger adrift in time and space, locked sleeping in an ancient prison until I, the young and beautiful waif pass through many trials and dangers to arrive at your boudoir and awaken you with true love's first, uh, poke at a pretty pattern."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Is that a classic romance tale, here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The general arc. Maybe not the specific details."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good. I'd hate to be unoriginal."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "It's classic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An original twist on the classics is acceptable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got that, no problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Destiny is something the Force does too, kinda. Visions of the future, or, like, possible futures. I'm only really good at using that for immediate danger type stuff, though. Like knowing where the blaster bolt is gonna be before it hits me so I can block it. One of my, um, mentors is better, she can see stuff that's years away when she tries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Maker has plans," she says, "But they're not always predictive."

"The Force sounds very useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. There's physical stuff too, like you can use it to be faster and stronger, heal more quickly..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How strong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stronger than I look. I bet I could carry you around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to see that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems a convenient time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here goes, then."

She scoops Rodanthe up, one arm beneath her legs and the other supporting her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

The balance is a little awkward given Rodanthe's sheer size - and she's significantly heavier than she should be, too, just from looking at her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis staggers a little, but keeps her footing and starts walking again.

"How do you like it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Entirely unhelpful languid sprawl. "You're very strong, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think for longer distances we'd have to come up with a better position, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It could use some refining," she says, "Which is quite fortunately also a skill of mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good."

She's starting to breathe more heavily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Amused smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis makes it a little further before setting Rodanthe back down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good first attempt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll have to help me improve for the next one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I intend to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sadly, it seems they'll be waiting for Salacis's Master - she's not there yet when the two arrive at the pick up location.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like we have some time to kill."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With more pleasant company than before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And more range of motion than afforded by a stasis pod."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An opportunity for a wider variety of new experiences."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of experiences are you thinking about exploring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... My first trip did give me a chance to test all of my sensors except the ones for physical direct contact..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does that mean you want me to touch you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes." Then, teasingly: "It'd be very helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm nothing if not helpful," she giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've done me two great services already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to do you a couple more..." She steps closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

She closes the rest of the gap, looming over Salacis but not quite touching, not yet. "Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out to lightly run her hands up Rodanthe's side, from her thighs to her breasts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep hum. "Light touch sensors there seem to be functional... Try firmer now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis steps into Rodanthe and wraps her arms around her tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very good girl..." She runs her own hands down Salacis's back, exploring the play of her muscles, the feeling of her ribs...

(Rodanthe doesn't feel quite human to the touch. Too cool, her skin too perfectly smooth, and she very clearly doesn't have true ribs.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooh.

Salacis plants a kiss on Rodanthe's sternum.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pleased noise. (She tastes odd, too. Sharp, almost like copper.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Interesting... Clearly, further experimental kisses are required.

Permalink Mark Unread

The space near what would be joints on a human taste a little bit different - and get more appreciative noises.

Permalink Mark Unread

Noises are good.

Nibble nibble.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, and scrapes her fingernails down Salacis's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

This provokes a significant amount of wiggling!

Permalink Mark Unread

Harder, this time (her nails turn sharper and stronger).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yessss...."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

It sadly isn't that much longer before Salacis hears her Master's ship approaching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrr maybe if she pretends she doesn't hear it they can keep going a little longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ship gets closer... And closer... And then: "Having fun without me, Apprentice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you want a ride out... You may have to share."

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis is definitely in no way, shape, or form opposed to that thought.

"You'd have to ask her," she giggles. "Um, Master, this is Rodanthe, the one I found. Rodanthe, this is my master, Darth Sidious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello to you, too."

She gestures negligently behind her, and the ship lands. She hums, then. "You're interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And fun, apparently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My idea of fun is a bit different than my Apprentice's. Not cognitive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something I can appreciate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

"Welcome aboard." Then, to Salacis: "Show our guest to a bunk, Apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, master."

To Rodanthe, "You can have the one next to mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's designed for you, will it be tall enough for me?" she teases, stepping up behind Salacis and lightly draping her arms over her shoulders. (Which, given her elbows are about even with Salacis's shoulders...)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not designed specifically for me. But, uh, you're going to be a bit of a squeeze..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can curl up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see." To the bunks, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

To the bunks!

Salacis's is decorated with little glittery blaster stickers. Rodanthe will indeed need to curl up to fit into any of ones available.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like your decorations," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. Gotta mark what's mine, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that traditional, here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! I am a trend-setter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be an interesting tradition to develop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some things might need something different than stickers..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Considering hum. "Are there ways to permanently fix images into your species' skin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nodnod. "Yeah, they're called tattoos. Ink injected below the skin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. Does it feel like anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not once you've got it? But it hurts while you're getting it done and while it's healing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting, certainly. And I'd be tempted to investigate more exotic substances than ink..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's like, e-ink tattoos, that can glow and change shape..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they hurt more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something to research, or perhaps experiment with..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe! It's a pretty permanent thing to experiment with, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd need a willing volunteer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "I suppose you would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know where I'd find one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmmaaaybe. Might have to devote a little more effort to the search, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you do." She strikes a little pose.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps in and kisses Salacis.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!! It's very hard to refuse someone of Rodanthe's stature when they want a kiss. Salacis likes that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, because Rodanthe likes how helpless Salacis is here...

Permalink Mark Unread

They fit together well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Like a key in a lock.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rodanthe can get Salacis's tumblers to click any time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Salacis did start something earlier...

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, is she gonna get held to her promises?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Rodanthe always takes what she's owed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good to know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Demanding kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!

Maybe Salacis should climb up Rodanthe a little to make kisses easier...

Permalink Mark Unread

If she puts her legs around Rodanthe's waist, she ends up at the exact right height for some very enthusiastic kissing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just as planned.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rodanthe very helpfully pushes her against the wall - adds some stability - hard enough Salacis is being a little bit squished.

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeak!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nibble!

Permalink Mark Unread

Whine!

Permalink Mark Unread

A sound that clearly begs for a harder bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

Judging by the wiggles, yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, Rodanthe is fully capable of biting hard enough to draw blood.

Permalink Mark Unread

That elicits a pleased gasp.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm... And since she isn't using her hands to hold up Salacis... That frees them to tug hair, or drag unnaturally sharp nails down Salacis's side (drawing only a stinging hairline of blood, at first).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aahh- Mmm- Moooorrrre!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More, like Rodanthe's lips and teeth and fingers all heating up?

Permalink Mark Unread

If that's what it takes!

Permalink Mark Unread

The real question is if that's enough?

Permalink Mark Unread

Depends how hot those points of contact get.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hot enough to burn, if Salacis continues reacting well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully Salacis's Master has enough medical supplies to keep up.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'll be good practice for Salacis's healing trances.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, since Salacis is helping Rodanthe test her skin sensitivity, it's only fair that Rodanthe gives her chances to practice her skills in return...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's mutually beneficial.

Permalink Mark Unread

A fair trade.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep!

Permalink Mark Unread

Which sadly must eventually come to an end, as a summons to meet her Master - and bring Rodanthe - comes in Salacis's mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm." She pats Rodanthe on the cheek. "Gotta go see Sidious now..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." Kiss! "Let's get cleaned up, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

'Just a minute,' she sends back to Sidious.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'll be waiting.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Once she and Rodanthe are somewhat presentable they can go see her, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had some questions," she says, "About what my Apprentice experienced on the planet, and about you, Rodanthe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately, I have questions as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll let you two ask the questions, and if I have any answers I'll give them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stick to our strengths, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I'll add 'asking questions' to your lesson list, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, master."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums and turns to Rodanthe. "Where are you from, originally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A different galaxy," she says. "I could point it out on a star chart, but I doubt you would recognize our name for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A very interesting woman, then."

"Why did you come here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Light shrug. "Scientific curiosity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A powerful curiosity, then, to come this far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would none of your scholars travel to another galaxy if given the chance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A being like me doesn't easily die or grow bored, so the only barrier becomes fuel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's supposedly impossible to cross the galactic boundary through hyperspace."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I am not nearly as vulnerable to the physical or mental degradations of time as an organic, fortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You traveled in sublight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For a way, at least."

"The distance between true galaxies is immense, however. More than even complex minds can easily comprehend. If this ship traveled to my galaxy - crossing your galaxy's boundary in sublight wouldn't even double your travel time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You must be- really old."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on your frame of reference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about the frame of someone who hasn't lived to see mountains die?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "The collapse on the planet? That happened faster than this sort of thing normally does, I think..."

"How old are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sixteen years standard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long is a standard year, compared to - hm, the year length on that planet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's about the same? I think just a little longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very young, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Precocious for my age."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An outright prodigy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious is keeping a straight face, but she feels amused to Salacis.

To Rodanthe again: "How aware have you been of the outside galaxy, while you were beneath the pyramid?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Not particularly actively. Though I've learned your language, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have sensors off-planet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a few I laid during my journey in. Drones set to monitoring the behavior of singularities over time and the like. They're likely not all still functional, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmhmm. "What are your intentions here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not the vanguard of an invasion or anything," she says. "I'm genuinely here on a scientific mission. If there's threats to my home galaxy, I'll address those - but given the distances involved, it seems unlikely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you ever take sides in local conflicts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It depends, but likely not - I won't reveal you to your enemies, if something like that comes up. I have no reason to. However, I will not easily abandon my mission, and most local conflicts would be distractions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm.

"My Apprentice needs practice and experience with investigation and exploration. Would you accept an escort on your mission?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps for a time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wouldn't be that long to you, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it would be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be a good break in the routine, too. And a native guide is often helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be very natively helpful. Guideful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've already noticed the helpfulness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those keen powers of observation must be why you were sent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was a central requirement."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

"What sorts of things would you want to investigate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force seems the most different thing here at first glance..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. But there's not really any, like, place you can go to get a better view of it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surely there's places to investigate existing knowledge of it? Especially historical."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's old temples and such..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can start there, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's alright with your Master...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do we need to steal a ship to start off or are you going to be nice this time?" Salacis asks Sidious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be remiss not to provide our first intergalactic visitor with a way to get around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yesss." That means it'll be a nicer ship than anything she could easily steal.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be careful with it, Apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm always careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps this mission will be a chance for you to practice effective care, as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So long as the ship returns to me undamaged..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be fine, master."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm very trustworthy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are." A genuine fondness flows across their bond.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I trust you'll represent our galaxy well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll provide you a list of places to investigate, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. That'll help get started."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though you'll need to continue on your own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As always."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never let it be said I've held you back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Except for all those times you tied me up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was providing you with valuable experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh-huh. Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't get anything from it, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apart from the sneaking suspicion you do it more for your benefit than mine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can act towards multiple goals at once, Apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at Sidious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Brat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm."

Permalink Mark Unread

There isn't much more of interest after that, though Sidious successfully prods at Rodanthe for some details. Not many, though, and little she or Salacis wouldn't have already guessed.

She reaches out into Salacis's mind that night: 'I want you to learn more about her. Whatever you can.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'll make friends.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Your specialty.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'People like me, what can I say?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I've never met anyone more likeable.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'If you ever do, I want to meet them immediately.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'll keep that in mind.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee. 'Good.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'll transfer the two of you to your own ship tomorrow evening. I have some lessons to go over with you tomorrow, though, and exercises I want you to keep up with.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Always some kind of work.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You'll thank me for it someday, brat.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I do enjoy being a brat, it's true.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'See? I'm giving you opportunities.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental giggles. 'I bow to your superior wisdom, master.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Good. I like seeing you on your knees.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You like seeing everyone on their knees.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'There's one or two exceptions...'

Permalink Mark Unread

Suprise and confusion! 'Bwuh?'

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels very, very amused.

'I believe it's your bedtime, Apprentice.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'What no you can't just say that and then tell me to go to bed-'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sleep well!'

There's a feeling rather like a comm turning off in Salacis's head - the bond grows more distant, muffled as Sidious stops putting quite so much effort into reaching for her apprentice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Booooo.

Salacis grumpily turns over to attempt sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious is no more inclined to answer questions on that the next day, of course, though their private training sessions together do give Salacis some time to harass her about it if she wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis does want to harass her about it! She seems rather stuck on the topic, in fact.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately, Sidious has been artfully dodging questions longer than Salacis has been alive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Booooo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "You'll need to work harder on subtlety to get your answers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Isn't it excellent how many learning opportunities you're getting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mumblegrumble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teasing kiss.

"Another round, Apprentice. I want your form to be perfect before you leave..."

And: training!

Permalink Mark Unread

Training!

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes sure Salacis is nice and worn out by the time she's loading her and Rodanthe on to their new ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least she's not hogtied this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your optimism has always been one of your best traits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got a lot of best traits. That's also one of my best traits."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile. "It was a large part of why I loved you so much, despite my best judgment, when you were first my Danni."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

...Okay Sidious needs one last hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't object, just hugs her apprentice tightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"See you in a while, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you in a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye."

And off they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Senator Palpatine turns her ship towards Coruscant. She has work to do - people to talk into this or that position, people to befriend or scope out, policy proposals to review, data summaries to read, diplomatic missions to plan for and head...

(And a judicial investigation Plagueis wants her to stick her nose into. Someone at the Black Sun syndicate fucked up, and a sprawling web of connections is being traced - to the International Banking Clan, to the Trade Federation, to others...)

To Naboo. Senator Palpatine's office isn't quite on damage control, not yet, but the King wants her to make sure no fingers get pointed in the wrong direction here.

(She knows exactly where she wants suspicion flowing.)

Her office is involved just enough it isn't strange for her to be talking to people on the committees though, and she's successfully convinced the King to "investigate" a few of his enemies on Naboo for "conduct unbefitting of their office." They have their scapegoats.

(And Sidious has her excuse. Naboo is part of the investigative process.)

It's a big, sprawling thing. Easy for someone to poke and prod - and major enough to bring in the Jedi, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

A young one, at least. Naboo isn't apparently quite central enough to this case to merit the attention of a full Jedi Master.

The padawan is polite enough to schedule a meeting in advance, giving her name as Elesse Vendar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her handmaidens handle her scheduling - and often handle her formal meetings and public appearances, honestly, given Senator Palpatine's official work is always done masked, as is traditional for a Naboo woman of her station. (Exceptionally traditional. The modern interpretation is effectively just heavy makeup, but, well. Palpatine's found benefits to casting her recruitment net farther than most do, and the mask removes the need for her handmaidens to resemble her that way. As well as the benefits to styling herself very traditionally even as she pushes a very nontraditional political platform, of course.)

This one though... Palpatine wants to handle herself.

She schedules her meeting with the padawan fairly promptly, though late in the day after Palpatine's other business, so she won't have to worry about running over. (And she schedules her meetings before this to be ones her handmaidens can take over. No sense running late, either, nor risking coming unprepared.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is around twelve or thirteen years old, getting to be tall for her age, and harbors considerable strength in the Force. She's dressed in traditional Jedi robes and is five minutes early exactly for the meeting.

"Thank you for agreeing to see me, Senator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for your patience with our schedule," she says, tone smooth and friendly and wryly amused in a way that's mirrored in the Force - and that softens her mask, somehow, makes her seem personable even past the fixed expression.

(She feels like she maybe has a mild form of the sort of uncanny luck you see in pilots, the sort of borderline sensitivity that wouldn't be enough to become a Jedi Knight, but is enough to hand wave away an unusual insight and fortune. She's dressed in an exact copy of the complicated ceremonial robes they've chosen for the Senator of Naboo position today, the same that her handmaiden Salí has been wearing for Palpatine's other meetings.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no trouble. I'm sure you have more pressing demands on your time than I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives off the vague impression that she's smiling indulgently as she gestures for Elesse to have a seat on an armchair catty corner to hers before a low table. "I have quite a bit of help, fortunately - and you have quite a few tasks set before you, yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try to focus on just one thing at a time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A philosophy that will bring you far." Small laugh. "Though sadly not always possible to achieve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do what you can, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The only thing anyone can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm." She pulls her datapad out. "About the thing in front of us now, though. I just have a few questions about your office's financial records..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She has answers, of course. Ones entirely appropriate to the public image of her office - not a hundred percent squeaky clean, but just smudged enough that it doesn't look too much like she's manipulating her records. She has thorough reports even down to who's treated her to lunch, to gifts she's received, not just on campaign contributions or the like. Enough data to give an entire team of investigators a raging headache.

The smudges are... Interestingly placed, more in what's not smudged. (This had been a massive debate among her handmaidens, a massive risk...)

It's not very hard to find out that Damask Holdings of the Intergalactic Banking Clan has its fingers trailing through Naboo's waterways. That Hego Damask had gotten involved in Naboo's politics near the beginning of a young Palpatine's political career. There's grumbles about it sometimes; Naboo doesn't like the IBC and hates Damask even more, and the scandal of King Tapalo's involvement with funding outside of Naboo has dogged him his entire career, and it now looms like a dark specter over his chosen successor, Ars Veruna, in the ongoing elections. That particular association makes the news in Naboo pretty often, sometimes even outside of the planet.

The IBC's money flows like oil through Naboo politics, and Palpatine's office is clean.

These records aren't the ones formally on file, which are mildly outdated and exactly as vague as tax reports by Senatorial offices can get away with - which is pretty vague, given that it's the Senate deciding how much they need to report. These are her internal records, provided to the Jedi's investigators in good faith to prove her office is uninvolved. The smudges link her in a few places to King Tapalo's scapegoats for the investigations into the wider allegations of corruption and criminal conspiracy, but not more than is to be expected given they share a home planet.

(This has every sign of being yet another thing the wealthier corporations will brush aside as a minor embarrassment, legal investigations tangled up in light years of red tape and eventually dying there, the Jedi unable to step outside of the narrow remit the Senate gives them, and a murky pall has hung over the heart of the Republic for generations... Investigations like this fail very, very often.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is just a simple padawan, so it would be entirely forgivable if the subtler financial tricks of the Banking Clan that the Senator is writing between the lines of her explanation here went right over the Jedi's head. (But Elesse is still only twelve, so she doesn't perfectly control the tell-tale reactions that say she is in fact picking up just about everything Palpatine is laying down.)

On the other hand, she does have an exact copy of the official records on her datapad here, and would like to go over why these ones are differing. Just so she can explain it to her Master.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can rather pleasantly point out the exact loopholes she's using - all entirely legal and above board, of course - that allow her to leave out massive chunks of this, or summarize oddly, or use assorted other statistical tricks...

(She lets herself settle into an almost teacherly tone. It's a bit hard to resist, and it's not like it contradicts her public persona - the Senator of Naboo has a responsibility to see to the political education of the next generation, after all.)

There's a few incredibly arcane uses and norms around the public law, that don't get discussed effectively ever, but that are, of course, entirely essential in an explanation about what she's doing and why her records are entirely above board. She skips past those with a quiet artfulness, draws attention away from them in a way that'd work perfectly well on most adults, let alone most preteens. (They're part of the clues, also, though in slightly different ways, pointing in slightly different directions.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't fight the misdirections. (She does make notes, quietly.)

"...Well. Thank you for your time, Senator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Do feel free to reach out to my office if you have further questions, Miss Vendar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will."

She stands to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the Senator stands to walk her out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse makes her goodbyes gracefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

She returns them with good humor and well wishes for her future work.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's the handmaidens - specifically Ravrí this time, the newest handmaiden who's still settling into her role as part of the whole, a being without her own selfhood - who almost idly begin to track her.

(Ravrí had been one of the two handmaidens accompanying their Mistress to the meeting with Elesse. The girl was interesting, she thinks, and knows her Mistress thinks that too, and she finds the rhythm of this peaceful and doesn't actually object to doing the new girl busy work here, or to having the older handmaidens keeping an eye on her. (It's expected that they'll watch the young Jedi. They don't want Plagueis realizing what they're seeing, though, not until it's too late.))

She's also the one on secretary duty for any messages or requests from the Jedi, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

The follow-up messages trickle in slowly. By itself, each one is relatively innocuous- but if you add them all up, it's clear that someone is charting a very precise map of the ebb and flow of money through the office (and more, what those perturbations mean about the wider Senate and the Naboo government back home).

Permalink Mark Unread

She likes this girl.

Ravrí responds, of course, checking some of the more sensitive questions with her mentor Vení first. The messages are marked as from the Senator's office, not the Senator, and Ravrí keeps to the official tone.

Mostly, but where she doesn't is under Vení's careful eye. She lets slip hints that she's a new hire, here and there in tiny 'mistakes' or 'impulsive' comments, and lets slip the edges of the picture they want the Jedi to see. (And the faint outline of the picture they want the Jedi to suspect. Ravrí's status as the new girl should hopefully lend those slips an air of authenticity...)

And she makes it clear that for the more complicated or sensitive questions, the Jedi can very easily schedule a meeting with one of the handmaidens or the Senator herself, with an implication that more might be said off the record than in writing.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she has the time to spare. Elesse wouldn't want to put the office to any trouble, it's just a couple lingering snags, you know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their office always has time for the Jedi.

Perhaps a lunch meeting?

Permalink Mark Unread

That works.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll schedule a light catered meal (after checking for allergies and the like, of course) in one of the side rooms for the Senator's office, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse shows up on time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ravrí is there already, with the food laid out - a cold and light lunch, so they won't have to worry about eating it right away. Finger foods, mostly, all the sorts of things one can eat while working.

(Her outfit is of course designed to let her eat without revealing her face, especially sitting beside Elesse at the table rather than across from her.)

"Good noon, padawan Vendar," she says. "Please, have a seat."

(She's not Force sensitive, but she is a tightly controlled, muted presence. All the handmaidens are.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Handmaiden." She sits. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

"Now, I understand you had more questions for us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She has a list, actually. Somewhat harder-hitting than previously.

Permalink Mark Unread

The handmaiden comes off as (and genuinely is) less polished than the Senator, speaks slightly less carefully, gives away slightly more in the Force, observes the Jedi slightly less keenly. (They're not even on camera - the Senator's office doesn't tolerate potential leaks - but her Mistress can watch through her eyes very subtly.)

There's more hints at potential entanglement with the Intergalactic Banking Clan and Damask Holdings, and yet more at ties to the Trade Federation, or else to parties the Jedi can't see yet - entanglement they're trying to hide, right now, and that shows up unusually infrequently even in every other record Elesse can access. (There's patterns outside this office, in who's reticent about questions, who openly or subtly aligns themselves with the Naboo delegation. In where else money trails vanish or lead to suspiciously innocuous places. In what requests get tied up in red tape and what don't - red tape is just about a reflex here, and it's odd, too, how forthcoming and prompt the Naboo delegation is acting.)

Ravrí also very clearly likes Elesse. It shines even in her muted Force presence and the careful lines of her posture. She's possibly willing to be a bit reckless, just to get a chance to verbally spar with the younger girl. (Ravrí is also obviously not just new but young - possibly a graduate of the Youth Legislature program, possibly not, given that no one has ever figured out who Palpatine's handmaidens were before joining her service and all their accents are blandly typical of those from Naboo's royal houses. Either way, she's likely at most a few years older than Elesse.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's kinda nice to talk with someone more her own age. Doesn't mean she won't ruthlessly take advantage of any gaps as best she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ravrí returns the favor in part (implying that her offhand probes into what the Jedi already know or have found in their investigations are her own curiosity getting ahead of her, of course), but mostly focuses on dancing around Elesse, deflecting her where she can, leading her to other places (sometimes taking direction from subtle nudges in her mind from her Mistress)...

Permalink Mark Unread

The nudges may be backfiring a bit, from the way Elesse circles back around on those topics. (Not that she notices anything, precisely, just... vague flickers in the Force that make her want to follow up.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ravrí's instinct is to back off, to deflect the Jedi girl away from finding anything special about the words her Mistress has influenced.

(There's a keen interest in her mind, a soft reminder that she's given up her own selfhood to become a handmaiden - that her instincts are subordinate to her Mistress's desires - )

(Her Mistress is increasingly a low hum in her mind, directing somewhat more of the conversation. Most Jedi shouldn't notice, even subconsciously. Plagueis struggles to notice, and while he's not actually particularly observant naturally, his enormous experience in the Force and with Sidious makes up for that...)

Permalink Mark Unread

(The fewer changes there are, between Palpatine being present and not, words she guides and words she doesn't, the less Elesse notices.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(The presence in Ravrí's mind pulls back, plays around with creating larger differences. Her Mistress is amused and curious, and Ravrí trusts her Mistress's judgment but this seems risky...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh.

Elesse drifts the conversation away from what can strictly be called business and into more about the movements of people around the Senate, who's been talking to who, who's been wearing what, which unexpected coalitions are forming. Almost normal teenage girl gossip, if not for the exact subjects under discussion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ravrí seems to think this is extremely normal teenage girl gossip, honestly. (They're not the only teenagers working in the Senate, after all, and Naboo's Youth Legislature program means that Ravrí encounters a lot of teenaged politicians. Girls especially, with how the Senator's public example has been encouraging a resurgence of traditional thinking about politics.)

She relaxes into her seat, posture smoothing out as she gets into the gossiping rhythm. (The nudges are pretty minimal, here - and the few times her Mistress's presence increases in her mind, she doesn't significantly change what Ravrí's saying. Those are mostly focused on the subtle interactions between different groups and people that Elesse's noticing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's entirely possible they'll wind up going over their allotted time with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ravrí doesn't exactly have anything pressing scheduled after this, just a lot of work she needs to do... She lets them trail over some, but does eventually reluctantly check and comment on the time. "Do you need to be somewhere?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Not in particular, which is why I wasn't watching the time as closely as I could have. My apologies, handmaiden."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her tone's fond. "I don't have appointments scheduled after this, so it isn't a bother to me. But the Senator does need a few reports from me by dinnertime - perhaps we could schedule for another day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to consult with my Master, but- that seems possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'll need to schedule around my duties for the Senator, of course," she says with a small laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see what we can do, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will." She stands to escort Elesse out.

"Have a good afternoon, padawan Vendar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You as well, handmaiden." And she's off.

Permalink Mark Unread

And, a few months later, Darth Sidious reaches out to her apprentice to call for an in-person check in. It's the first they've had since Salacis found Rodanthe - Salacis has only seen Starkiller or one of the handmaidens since, though Sidious has reached out to her mind and sent messages.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can set something up. She and Rodanthe are between temples anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

She schedules them at one of the sites she's been wanting to explore, and says as she steps out of her ship: "It's been a little while."

Permalink Mark Unread

And that means it's time for a bouncy hug!

"It has!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, returning the hug. "You haven't grown any, though," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna stay cute and fun forever."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "Just the way I like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gigglekiss. "Just the way Rodanthe likes me, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've been making friends, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just like you told me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl." Another kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "Do you want a report?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know me so well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis will give her report, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She listens with interest.

"You've done well, Apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, master."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile, and fierce kiss.

"Show me to her, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Right this way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rodanthe greets Salacis with a kiss and Sidious with a polite - though distracted - smile and some light inquiries about Sidious's life since last they met.

...Also she keeps sending odd looks at Sidious, even while exchanging pleasantries.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certain of your biometrics have changed since last we met. It is odd."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "How have they changed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hard to summarize for human senses, but..." Squint. "Are you pregnant?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious freezes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Congratulations?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She is going to not have a panic attack.

(Salacis can feel her emotions pretty clearly. She's failing to hide them.)

"It seems unlikely," she says, voice clipped and a bit distant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ummm... Can you give us a minute?" she says to Rodanthe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yes." She stands and heads out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"I can't be pregnant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rodanthe is. Um. Usually pretty good with her sensor stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath.

She opens herself to the Force, looks at her own body through it, carefully, thoroughly - and the Dark Side turns into a galestorm around her as she screams.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis will just do her best to hang on and not get blown away.

Permalink Mark Unread

She calms down, eventually. Very eventually.

"I - don't know how I'm pregnant," she whispers, voice cracked and harsh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not the usual way, I'm guessing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Not that I - remember."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's... not good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not."

"If Plagueis doesn't already know - he can't find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll have to hide."

Permalink Mark Unread

She curls in on herself. "I don't know - how to do that. I don't even know how long I've been pregnant, or if anything is wrong - I've never evaluated a pregnancy in the Force - or at all - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can... find a doctor? Someone who doesn't know who you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a few deep breaths.

" - I'm unsure if - the Force is involved at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat pat. "We can figure that out too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...A doctor might be able to get - most of what's important. And finding a Force-trained healer would be very difficult..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless you wanted to kidnap a Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That'd be a different kind of risky..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably too much risky, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to think, there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna go sit down?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

To a more comfortable place to sit down, then.

Salacis is available for cuddles.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a while: "Even if Plagueis wasn't an issue... I wouldn't know what to - do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mean whether to keep it or not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm keeping it," she says, immediately and vehemently, before her face crumples slightly. "But I - I suck with kids, I'm an angry hot mess, I'm a public figure and I'm already never free to train you, I have far more enemies than just Plagueis, and something might be wrong, and I'm not ready, I didn't ask for this or anticipate this, and I - "

"...I didn't get to raise you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"You still did a good job of taking care of me, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wanted to do more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even Daddy had an au pair for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I didn't want to be - the sort of person Naboo's royal houses were trying to make me into."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're definitely your own person."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

"I - not getting to raise you sucked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've got more helpers, now. You can do it differently this time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah."

"But - only if Plagueis is dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can work on that too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Move up our timelines?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As much as we can, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be hard - there's a lot I'm not ready on..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What can I help with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Brainstorming," she says, "And..." Hum. "Stirring up chaos in certain places."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's something you're very good at."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I couldn't do any of this without you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing you don't have to, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm still afraid of messing up," she confesses, softly. "This is - new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. But... you're good. At stuff. You can figure this out, I know it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What if I can't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ask one of us to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm still angry. All the time. Just - burning."

"I lose control."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hughug.

"We can- practice. Work on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfuck my head, kill the Sith Lord who's been controlling my life for twenty years, and find some free time to raise a kid, all in the next... However long until I give birth."

Huff.

"Life's never easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. Y'know. If it was easy, someone else would have been picked to do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"By what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if it - meaningfully chooses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes me feel a bit better to think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Given the other major option for the cause of my pregnancy is Plagueis... I'll take it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"....Yeeaahhhhh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to find out if he did cause it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Any ideas where to start?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That kind of meddling might have left traces in the Force?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are we back to kidnapping a Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It'd benefit me to figure this out myself. Or get Shmi to figure it out."

"Or recruit someone with medical training as a handmaiden..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like the smart play."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Safer, but it might take longer."

Ugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes you gotta do the work."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"...I would kill any Force-sensitive I press into - helping with this - once they weren't needed anymore," she says, voice quiet. "Would you object to that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"No one we know already, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly not that you've met."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you have to, you have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're soft," she says, pensively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This - taking down Plagueis - can't be done nicely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. But it needs to be done."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And... whatever you have to do, I'm with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for being with me, here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's nowhere I'd rather be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"Perhaps," she murmurs, "Once Plagueis is out of the way... I could take a very long leave. Take you on a vacation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somewhere nice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exquisitely so. Somewhere scandalously expensive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know I like all three of exquisite, scandal, and expensive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make it sexy, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

Speaking of sexy...

It's been a while since she's seen her apprentice in the flesh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Sidious need to be reminded that she still exists?

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps of a few of her more interesting physical traits.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to show off a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Give Sidious something to dream about when they're apart.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It might take Salacis a little while to really ingrain the view in Sidious's mind...

Permalink Mark Unread

She's got time. But maybe Rodanthe can help...

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps later - Sidious wants her apprentice to herself right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not the only thing she had scheduled for this trip... But it's a pretty important component.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, all good things must come to an end someday.

Sidious gives her apprentice a list of targets and guidelines to operate within, but mostly encourages as much creative chaos as Salacis can manage without revealing herself.

She handles finding a Jedi Healer on her own - and then disposing of the body - and only tells Salacis afterwards, tersely relaying that there's nothing of the Dark Side around her pregnancy, no indication someone induced it.

(But it's immensely strange, a tight nexus of potential, a miniature whirlpool of the Cosmic Force, its alignment in the Light or Dark indiscernible. The Healer's mind had weakened dramatically after Sidious dominated her will and forced her to look - and Sidious had gotten a glimpse of the subsequent powerful visions that nearly did the work of killing the woman for her. (Conveniently, there'd been enough left of the woman for Sidious to tear some knowledge of Jedi training and techniques from her mind; she passes those on to Shmi.))

She thinks, and she plans, and the galaxy spins on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Months pass, and her pregnancy grows far more obvious to her - though she can still disguise it from most species, and can intervene in the spread of gossip from the offices of the others. (This leads to some... Slightly odd moments of apparent comraderie, chances for coalition building that she seizes effectively out of habit.)

Of course, the sprawling and deepening investigation into the ties of the largest trade and financial conglomerates to organized crime and enemies of the Republic looms over the Senate still. It's a sticky thing, trapping new suspects faster than old ones can wiggle free. It's still likely that the biggest players will be able to sacrifice a few pawns and otherwise get away with everything, but things are tense in the meantime.

Public figures who've cooperated with the investigations start receiving threats, which leads to a rather tense negotiation with the Senate and the Naboo government's security experts about if Palpatine's in-house security measures are enough for a scheduled trip back to her home planet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps a compromise- the Jedi are willing to offer Palpatine an escort for the trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Acceptable. So long as Senator Palpatine's own security team makes any actual security-related decisions, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course. Just an observer, to make everyone feel better. Perhaps... young Elesse Vendar, who the Senator's office has worked with before.

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems to have some familiarity with Naboo's customs; very well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will look forward to it, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Senator as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though, when Elesse meets them on the landing platform to board the Senator's ship, it's not Palpatine wearing the guide of the Senator of Naboo. It's the woman previously introduced to Elesse as Ravrí (though of course basic courtesy (and probably common sense) demands Elesse not draw attention to that).

"Padawan Vendar," she says, voice identical to what Elesse's used to hearing from the Senator. "We are glad to have you with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The pleasure is mine, Senator."

Seems that they are taking this at least somewhat seriously. And Elesse herself is window dressing, as expected.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's where they seem to be positioning her - at least, window dressing conveniently placed to respond to threats to the Senator's party. They're competent, even if they didn't think they'd need her.

"The handmaidens with me for this trip are Vení, Kaishrí, Shaní, and Lylí," she says, gesturing around subtly. "Shaní will be your primary liason on security arrangements."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shaní nods to Elesse slightly, though she doesn't murmur a greeting like the others. (She feels alert, almost wary, and unusually tightly wound in the Force. Elesse has never met her before, even though she at least recognizes the other three handmaidens.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Including Lylí - who's worn the Senator's mask the majority of the times Elesse has met the Senator - and who greets Elesse with a soft hello.

(And who should feel as vaguely bland as ever in the Force, but there's something... Oddly significant about her. Portentous, like a storm on the verge of breaking. Something that draws Elesse's attention, an unusually insistent nudge like a strong headwind pushing her on.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...Something to think about later. At length, possibly.

"Handmaidens," she nods at everyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Padawan," they chorus, tones mostly friendly - Shaní alone sounds clipped and distant. She regards Elesse, then: "I have done a thorough scan of the ship for threats. I will not object if you wish to do your own, however."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't want anyone to think I'm not earning my keep on this trip."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is good to be useful," Lylí says, quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

She'll go check around, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

It looks like Shaní's done an extremely thorough job - and possibly like the Naboo Senator doesn't bug her own ship. There aren't even security cameras, let alone subtle microphones in guest areas. Unusual, that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes it easy for Elesse to report her own all-clear, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí steps up once Elesse has reported, as the Senator is being escorted onto the ship. "I can show you to your quarters," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would appreciate that, handmaiden."

Permalink Mark Unread

Into the ship, then.

It's clearly not meant for hosting those not from Naboo - the corridors and rooms are small and private, and the only larger room - a conference room Elesse is assured is essentially public - has several dividers woven from dyed reeds native to Naboo. Elesse's room is similarly small and quiet, the walls a soft blue-green like the rooftops of Theed, with furnishings in various tones of a gentle, burnished gold.

"I'll be piloting," Lylí says. "You're welcome to spend time in the cockpit, or any of the public areas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you be needing anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not right now, thanks. I packed well enough to get through the first hour, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. You can let any of us know if you do need something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll leave her to it, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will settle in to meditate for the first couple hours, emerging once they're well underway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the handmaidens seem to be resting. Lylí is in the pilot seat, alone - with her mask off, staring out into hyperspace with a pensive expression.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up. "Hello."

(She doesn't reach for her mask, or even seem particularly startled. It's odd - Elesse has only seen her face in small, grainy holos, of her at assorted functions from before she became Senator, or decades old yearbook holos from her grade school. The news stories gossiping about her in the lead up to and wake of Vidar Kim's death had only gotten rather poor resolution pictures of her at the funeral of Kim's wife and sons. And, as far as anyone can tell, she hasn't shown anyone her actual face since Vidar and Danni Kim were killed.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are... Lyli?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, then sighs. "I'm still the one using that name, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you prefer to be called something else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses, an odd look on her face.

"Names don't matter much to me." And a tiny sigh, then: "But Lylí has the least - baggage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lyli, then."

"You looked like you were thinking deep thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have been." She curls up a bit, not looking at Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes thoughts get easier when you say them out loud."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And sometimes they get more real - more capable of harming you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on the thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pregnant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've scheduled this trip so I'll be giving birth on Naboo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want to keep this secret, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have - enemies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ones that are dangerous to a child?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you tell anyone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can keep a secret for a good reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does make me feel... a bit inadequate. I'm only a padawan. But I guess you trust the security team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do, against just about anything."

"And I'm sure Shaní will find a way you can help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could just stay out of everyone's way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't strike me as someone that prefers idleness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can keep myself entertained."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd be useful to us," she says, somewhat firmly. "I didn't want a large, intrusive team - but you're skilled in ways most aren't, you can integrate into our routines more easily than an entire extra team, and I am concerned about challenges to my security."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But not concerned enough to push for a more experienced Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you already. You're intelligent and perceptive, and you've worked well with us for your investigations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd think you know Knight Kim a little better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Things are - awkward with him, sometimes."

Long pause.

"I failed his sister."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse does not immediately recognize what Lyli is referring to here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"You would've been - what, six? I suppose all the gossip has faded by now, or else the tabloids didn't come up in your digging."

"After my mentor Senator Vidar Kim's wife and two of his sons died, he became - horrifically depressed. He had two surviving children. Ronhar was one, and - he was a Jedi. He was fine."

"I adopted the other in all but name. She was too young to take care of herself, and - her father wasn't there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...He died, didn't he? In a spacewreck."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her emotions are - weirdly muted. Dark, though, from the wounded edges Elesse can see.

"In a botched rescue after he and his daughter were kidnapped for ransom," she says, voice flat and tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyways, I don't talk to Knight Kim about - families."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

Well, now things are awkward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup. Very.

She sighs. "So, I want protection for my child - and someone I know would be reliable with that." She snorts. "Ronhar also isn't particularly observant, even if he's a Knight on other merits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure the Council wouldn't promote someone entirely incompetent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably not."

"But there's different areas of competence one can have, and - I don't think he'd add much in terms of situational awareness to our team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not. But still, you must have met some other Jedi during your years in the Senate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"None that particularly stood out to me."

"You're thorough, and clever, and observant, and you're willing to let my security team take the lead - that last is rare with experienced Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Taking advantage while you can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Securing an asset - things like overriding local security teams rather than working with them is a bad habit, but one that's very easy to fall into when you have power, and knowledge, and wisdom, that you think others don't. You'd be a powerful ally, and I would like to encourage you towards good habits."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile.

"I'm not sure I should encourage you to think of specific Jedi as assets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is the word ally better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More in line with our charter, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I apologize if I impinged on your honor as a Jedi," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

"Would you be my ally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm currently on a mission to help you, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your public record does indicate dedication to your missions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have heavy expectations to live up to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Others' expectations of us don't much matter to who we are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Presentation is still important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the unfortunate truths of politics."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of existing in a society in general, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some can escape expectations easier than others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being part of Naboo's royal houses brings - extra chains. And even if I had no enemies whatsoever..."

Light shrug.

"I don't want that childhood for my daughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I don't want to leave her to someone else to raise, either. The situation is... Complicated."

A tiny smile. "Hence all my deep and heavy thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm happy to be a sounding board. Even if I can't help much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd bet you can help more than you think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force is often surprisingly useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I suppose it must be." (She doesn't sound unsure of that at all.) "But we can surprise ourselves, too, and the Force seems unlikely to make up for a lack of ability."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's... a powerful supplement."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even the greatest weapon needs a wielder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force is more than a weapon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it must need even more skill."

Permalink Mark Unread

Headtilt. "For some things."

Permalink Mark Unread

Something about her seems faintly amused, almost like the sense Elesse gets off teachers when they're trying to guide her towards a conclusion, when they know something she hasn't realized yet. "What things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"With the Force, some things are just- instinctive. The more you try to control it, the less successful you are at influencing it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting..." She hums. "Does skill influence that at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's where the line gets blurry, between what's you and what's the Force."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if you don't give yourself a break."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't blurring that line be frightening, even briefly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. It- the Force guiding your actions feels like you, just... more so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Couldn't you guide it in return, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force is a lot bigger than you are. It's hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it get easier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. I haven't been practicing that long or that specifically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When did you start training?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been with the Jedi all my life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They train small children, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yes? Depending what you mean by training. Lessons start when you're old enough to walk, pretty much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Are there benefits to doing it that way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some attitudes are easier to get the hang of if you're basically starting out with them. And it makes the Republic feel better that we mostly don't have- outside loyalties."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because many people are afraid of those with more power than them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems an unideal patch for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not the only reason. Probably not even the primary reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Family isn't always worth knowing - but restricting who children can form connections to, who they can grow to be is... Rarely an ideal solution."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's worked for a long time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Functioning isn't the same as ideal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fact that it has functioned for centuries is still worth considering."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums and looks back out at hyperspace. (She seems... Tired, mostly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm going to go find something to eat. Can I get you anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you don't mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything in particular?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She has a few requests...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will keep those in mind as she heads of in search of the galley.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which fortunately appeared on the tour earlier.

Many of the handmaidens seem to be sleeping right now - and Elesse doesn't encounter anyone else on her way to and from the galley - and Lylí thanks Elesse quietly when she returns with the food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "And thank you for talking to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome to stay up here, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." She takes a seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

She settles back, apparently intending to just eat and watch hyperspace in silence. She feels calmer, though, less broody. (Still a little broody, of course, but a lot of the edge has been taken off.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She hasn't been offworld much yet.

Hyperspace is... interesting, for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll answer questions if asked, but - well, in the meantime, the focus that falls over her emotions very nearly resembles meditation, if a rather more intense one than Elesse's used to feeling from Jedi.

Permalink Mark Unread

(One more piece of weirdness on the pile.)

After a while of that Elesse will go to try to catch some sleep herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the trip is fairly similar - the handmaidens aren't maintaining anyone as the Senator right now, so Elesse is able to talk to Ravrí more and get to know the others, but Lylí is still the only one who shows her face during the journey.

She's curious about the Jedi and the Force and about Elesse's studies and impression of the Senate - but when she's not brooding she turns out to be very easy to bait into tangents of her own, and Elesse usually finds her reading.

She knows everything about the construction of this ship and every droid on it - expresses curiosity about lightsaber design in the middle of one info dump on modifying engines for different tasks. She knows a lot of history, too, of Naboo and the Republic and a massive spread of different groups, some of them relevant to her work as a Senator but many just interesting. She can cite fairly old laws from memory, and has clearly studied philosophy quite widely. (There's a lot of indications Elesse hasn't found out even a small fraction of the fields Lylí could go into a sizeable info dump on; she keeps referring offhandedly to connections to apparently entirely unrelated fields.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a good conversationalist. Her knowledge base is impressively wide. It's kind of like talking with the Council members, in some ways.

Permalink Mark Unread

She clearly enjoys talking to Elesse in turn, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Even if she is evil, maybe she's not all bad.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their arrival to Naboo is private - though the handmaidens still place one of them as the Senator and still mask up when leaving the ship. Palpatine's estate is large and remote, with a good view of mountain valleys and lakes and Theed in the distance.

Shaní has been distant on the trip, but she's brusque and efficient and deeply knowledgable, and she takes Elesse with her to sweep the estate for any problems ahead of the Senator's party - there's security that stays here, including two handmaidens who work in Theed on the Senator's behalf, but that of course doesn't satisfy Shaní.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe she can get Shani to explain some of what she's doing as they go? Elesse had a bit of a crash course in personal security before they left, but an expert's inside view is always welcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," she says.

Shaní is more talkative about security than most things, and she's good at explaining things succinctly - though someone slower on the uptake than Elesse might struggle to keep up. They're looking for gaps or signs of tampering in the automated protective systems, and looking for things that might have slipped in and hidden such as spy droids or bugs they might have left. They're speaking to the staff, too, getting a thorough idea of what everyone has seen and making sure security protocols are still being followed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is less help with the automated systems, she doesn't know them well enough. But getting the reports from the staff is something she's good at.

Permalink Mark Unread

And familiarity will come with training.

Permalink Mark Unread

It usually does, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You learn quickly as it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the reasons they picked me to send."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They chose well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

"You know your stuff pretty well, when it comes to security."

Permalink Mark Unread

Something about her turns wryly fond. "I've had a lot of experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"From the inside, or the outside?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Any good security expert has both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have experience with either?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I used to sneak out of the creche to spend more time in the library. I'm not sure if that should count."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps the way an early apprenticeship does."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Makes sense. Kind of what that time was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, you have more opportunities for gaining experience now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the good thing about missions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is." There's more fondness in her. "Even if some teachers throw you off the deep end."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeeeeeaaaah, Elesse knows what that's like. "Have you had many like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Heavy, amused sigh. "Mostly this team. The Senator has odd ideas about teaching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like she has odd ideas about learning, from what she demonstrated during our conversations on the trip."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "She does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think most Senators are quite so mechanically inclined."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's been like that since well before she became a Senator." She sounds like she's smiling. "And most Senators do have hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tinkering is more typical of the lower class, in contrast to the usual pool the Senate draws from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True; the Senator has always been unusual there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good she brings some diversity to the rotunda."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They could use it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes I think they should put more windows in that building. Remind them the outside world still exists."

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts. "They'd need to move the Senate building pretty often to remind them places that aren't the senatorial district on Coruscant exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe they can take the cost out of the catering budget."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might cause a riot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surely that is what the Senate Guard is paid to prevent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Guard could use more entertainment in their lives, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe try to sneak it in as a line item next time you're reviewing some boring ceremonial resolution."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See how attentive their interns are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or how aligned to this cause they are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or how much they hate their colleagues."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of reasons they could pass it through."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be a fun challenge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me know if you ever decide to try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Give you enough warning to get a good seat to watch from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, and to file a backdated report."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That you totally had nothing to do with this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. And that the Order could have seen this coming if only they had heeded my warnings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or had a more efficient system for processing reports."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to bring that up at the hearing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Solemn nod. "You'll need to go into it with a defense plan already in place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A Council hearing's no joke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Which is why you need to prepare well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the warning. Don't forget the warning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to warn you before doing anything that might get you dragged in front of the Jedi Council."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no problem at all," she says with a smile in her voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are we about done with the check, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost..." There's a few last things, and then reporting - and then Elesse can go take a break.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is she assigned quarters here?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes - though it's Lylí, now unmasked (they're in the safety of their home, private) who leads her there. The room overlooks a peaceful courtyard, full of climbing vines and small fountains. "You're near the main library," she says, "Which you have access to while you're here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you keep any special books in it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A few," she says. "Though there's some especially rare volumes I don't leave in the guest library."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to see for yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you promise you'll be careful with them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at archive safety."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll give you a trial run, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything you're especially interested in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Local history?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a large section in the main library - though I don't think many volumes that're solely in my personal library..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I doubt I'm going to just guess what you have in your personal library."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "There's some less local history and some philosophy - including of a few older sects of Force users."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really?"

Elesse is not doing a very good job of disguising her excitement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really."

"Would you like to borrow some of those, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Eager nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Follow me, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Library time!

Permalink Mark Unread

Library!

She shows Elesse where the guest library is, of course - and then to her private library, which is locked and off of her office. "You can ask if you want access," she says, "Though don't try to get into here on your own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try not to bother you too much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It won't be a bother - so long as you don't mind discussing the books with me. There aren't many people interested in this history."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have a deal, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Agreed."

Permalink Mark Unread

To the library, then.

(Her most controversial books aren't kept here... But there's a treasure trove all the same, a legacy built of years and fortunes spent seeking out every scrap of Force knowledge, of Plagueis's bribes and gifts...)

And it's currently Elesse's to peruse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay so what she needs to do is be systematic about this, figure out what all's available to her and come up with a priority list-

Haha no she's totally getting sucked into like the third book she sees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí sits on a chair with her own book, apparently content to let Elesse get distracted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is very distracted. She knew the native Corellian Force-user tradition was a lot more secular than the Jedi Order and the Corellians she's aware of are all oddballs but she hasn't come across records like this before, an inside view on the history of the Rainbow Warlords and biography of notable figures. The Jedi's archive focuses on just the Greens, who eventually became the Green Jedi and then merged into the wider galactic Order.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not a very long book, though - but perhaps once she's done, she'd enjoy this one, which goes into more detail about the tensions between the Jedi Order and the Green Jedi after the Ruusan campaign, including primary sources like letters and recordings...

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She brings it over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's quite possible Elesse is going to miss dinner, at this rate.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can have something fairly non-messy brought to the office, and they can discuss the books over the meal, perhaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's that famous bureaucratic efficiency.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is Elesse being sarcastic?

Permalink Mark Unread

She would never.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, of course, Lylí must have mistaken her for someone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

She spends too much time around people wearing masks, clearly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí would think that'd make her better at telling people apart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Empirical evidence suggests otherwise.

Permalink Mark Unread

What other evidence does she have?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, just the one data point, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need more for a true frequency analysis.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will be sure to keep that in mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Going to start adding memory slips to your mental file on me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Every little bit helps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet it's getting to be a pretty big file by now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

Then food, and Elesse is curious about Lyli's thoughts on how the relationship of the Greens to the Jedi affected Corellia's participation in galactic governance, and vice versa...

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí's clearly read more books than just the two Elesse's encountered - and she has a deep understanding of modern Corellia - and she has quite a few thoughts...

They might get distracted enough Elesse will forget to pick her book back up before bedtime.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to come back tomorrow, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí will let her take the book she was reading back with her, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps tomorrow I'll let you take more," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll be ready for more by then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can work you up to it, if you aren't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see how things go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tomorrow, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tomorrow."

For now, bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

To bed.

Lylí keeps giving Elesse access to the library - to a wealth of books - and lures her out into long, rambling discussions. (There's subtle criticism of the Jedi Order woven throughout, but mostly in the books themselves - and there's slowly increasing hints that Lylí knows more about the Force than she lets on).

Lylí or one of the other handmaidens do perform Senatorial work, leaving the villa for Theed for sometimes long stretches, or taking holo calls throughout the day - and they very much discuss it as if Lylí is a handmaiden and the Senator of Naboo is a collective persona, someone they all are. The other handmaidens take the lead here though, especially as Lylí's pregnancy advances and grows more obvious.

(A feeling of impending something, a looming shatterpoint, creeps up on Elesse. Lylí is at the center of it, but she can't put her finger on much else...)

Elesse is on guard duty the day Lylí is scheduled to give birth. Lylí's read in a midwife, a young woman who swears herself as a handmaiden a few weeks after their party arrived at the villa, and the Senator's appointments are very minimal today, handled in the early morning, and the handmaidens form a tight cordon around the birthing room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse paces the perimeter, trying to burn off her nervous energy. (She's had trouble concentrating enough to meditate, the past few days.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Shaní's schedule has her shifting to an inner guard position - with Lylí - as the actual birth approaches. It seems they want the person with the lightsaber closer, in a better position to directly protect Lylí and her child.

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes sense.

Having the schedule- helps.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's why she makes them.

Shaní herself is going on the perimeter rotation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will keep on guard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí keeps perfectly quiet while giving birth, even though she'd apparently declined pain medication - the midwife stopped checking on her over that after the second time Lylí snapped at her over it.

It's a quick birth, though, after what was apparently a somewhat long labor -

Permalink Mark Unread

And the newborn is apparently not incluned to be very quiet no matter what's happening. She is, in fact, inclined to make very many upset noises, at the greatest volume she can!

Permalink Mark Unread

Being born is hard.

But at least she's cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

The baby calms down a bit when she's handed to her mother - who stares at her with clear awe - and there's a slip in her Force signature, something reaching for her daughter, intertwining with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is not going to use that against her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that she's going to have a chance to right now, because she feels a dark shudder in the Force.

"-Something's coming. Something dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

- And the comms crackle to life -

"Intruder," Shaní snaps over them. "Unknown darksider."

And then there's the sound of a lightsaber - and the comm clicks off -

Permalink Mark Unread

She is going to fucking murder Plagueis -

Darth Sidious sets her daughter on the bed, and flings her hand out, throwing the doors open with a sharp jolt of power - and she stands, and the Dark Side rises with her, chokingly, casting out across the estate - and a cabinet pops open, an ornate lightsaber hilt jumping to her hand -

And she nearly blurs as she runs from the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Oh fuck.

Elesse hurries to the baby, makes sure she's safe, comfortable-

Pulls out her lightsaber, ignites it in guard position.

Permalink Mark Unread

The midwife and the other handmaiden in the room pivot to close the doors, locking them and activating some kind of humming barrier and then pulling up security feeds on a screen in one corner, the more experienced handmaiden activating comms to start coordinating, get people out of the way of the fight, get medical attention to anyone injured, provide Shaní with a route to retreat along while restricting the intruder's movements...

"Can you sense any other threats?" the older handmaiden asks Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...N-no. Not right now." Lyli- Palpatine is kind of drowning everything else out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sharp nod. "Update me immediately if that changes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's- a lot of dark side energy. It's hard to tell what's going on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would a better view of the security systems help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe..." Glance at the baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

The baby is very unhappy! Does everyone know the baby is very unhappy, they should know this.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Elesse puts her saber away and picks her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She cries a bit less, making hiccuping sounds and clumsily flailing towards Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes soothing noises. "It's gonna be okay. We're all going to just fine, you'll see," she murmurs, trying to project a bit of calm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smaller baby noises! And a feeling somewhat like someone is - also very clumsily - reaching out for her in the Force.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So precocious, little lady." Elesse feels her emotions settling somewhat.

Over to the security screens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where Sidious is intercepting the other darksider. Her lightsaber is a crimson blur, but... She doesn't actually seem to be trying to injure her opponent.

Permalink Mark Unread

This may have something do with the fact that her opponent looks to be about ten years old, and the double-bladed lightsaber he's using so acrobatically is very nearly taller than he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taking down a very determined ten year old zabrak apparently trained to fight her without injuring him irrecoverably is, in fact, very hard.

"Why did Plagueis send you?" she asks, voice low and dangerous and even.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You surround yourself with lightsiders," he snarls.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't discard useful tools for mere philosophical reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Baggage. You are impure. You must be cleansed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our Master is a fool," she says, pressing the attack with incredibly precise and strong blows, anticipating his movements and forcing him to parry her. "One who destroys his weapons on the off chance they might someday cut him, who turns loyalty to hatred because he cannot stand to think of a world without brutality, who turns away from every true opportunity laid before him because it might require him to change."

Sidious might not be taking the kid down quickly, but he can't touch her all the same.

She attacks him in the Force as she attacks his body. Her Force signature is behaving weirdly compared to Plagueis's, though. It feels Dark, it should lash out with a strength like an avalanche - but it presses against him firmly and evenly instead, wraps around him and searches for every crack in his shields, a dark ocean already closed over his head and dragging him ever deeper.

(Shmi Skywalker is not the only one who's learned from their partnership. Wielding the Dark Side at all like how Shmi would wield the Light is incredibly hard, requires an intensity of will strong enough to control herself and every scrap of power that flows through her. To move slowly, relentlessly, the ferocious strength of the Dark and the unerring patience of the Light.)

"What has Plagueis told you that you are to him, boy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnr. His shields aren't that strong.

"I am a knife."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He will break you," she says. "It doesn't matter how useful you are to him. He will wear you dull, and then break you and cast you away like trash."

"Darth Plagueis does not believe in loyalty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are a liar, Sidious."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pushes him back, nearly off balance -

"I had a knife," she says, "A girl your age. Strong in the Force. Clever, hard working. Utterly devoted to me and to any cause or Master I would give her."

"Plagueis couldn't stand that I had connections that weren't him, no matter how useful they were."

She presses further, not giving him enough space to get his balance, her attacks blurring together -

"I was Plagueis's knife, and then he ordered me to murder my Danni because he could."

Permalink Mark Unread

He slips, leaving a critical vulnerability in his grip-

Permalink Mark Unread

She gestures, knocking him off balance even further and ripping his lightsaber out of his hand and into her free hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

He falls, looking up at her in terror.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out with the Force, pushing him to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath. She puts both lightsabers away.

And she kneels over him - checks that he's actually out, that he doesn't need urgent medical attention, that he isn't bugged or trapped or anything -

Sidious gathers the boy in her arms, and carries him to the estate's most secure cell. Arranges him on the floor so he'll be as comfortable as possible on a hard floor in an empty room.

And then she leaves, locking the door and summoning Starkiller and her best martially trained handmaiden to watch him.

And Sidious goes to find her daughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still with Elesse in the birthing room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her daughter's calmed down significantly in Elesse's arms, and is currently dozing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses in the doorway, wrestling her Force signature back under control, shoving her roaring emotions where they can't spill from her skin.

Seeing her daughter - unharmed, content, protected - helps.

(It doesn't help the fear, doesn't help the old doubts creeping in.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you going to kill me for knowing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Not just for knowing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If your survival posed even the smallest threat to my daughter."

"Outside of that - if you threatened me or mine beyond what I can maneuver around or turn to my advantage."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You protected her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone had to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you put her life above yours?"

Sidious reaches out in the Force - overwhelming, choking - demanding honesty.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Shaní - Starkiller, unmasked and now clearly Force sensitive - leans against the wall across the hall behind her, arms crossed, senses open.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse counters with a protective shield- not around her mind, but the baby's.

"She's innocent. I stand against anything that would hurt her."

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't press against her daughter - their bond is already strong even if it's still fragile in its attachments (though the baby seems very insistent on glomping onto Elesse, too). She evaluates Elesse, then reaches to Starkiller for her impressions, then says: "Good."

"Out of all beings, all possible threats to her in this or any galaxy - Darth Plagueis is the greatest. He taught me, and he sent that boy to spy on me. He'll destroy my daughter purely because I love her, and he is not easily turned aside."

"I'm going to kill him, and I'm going to raze down everything he has ever worked for so thoroughly that his dreams can never become reality."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

That's a big statement. Which she would expect from a Sith. And a venture that could easily spiral out of control, which is why Elesse is definitely not agreeing to help. She has her own priorities.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a problem with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Starkiller smiles in the background and says to Elesse: "Don't worry about sassing her. She needs more people who'll tell her she's being melodramatic."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Eyeroll. "Isn't that what you're here for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a big job. You can't expect me to do it by myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh."

"Anyways." She turns back to Elesse. "Do you have a problem with my plans?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How are you planning to keep her safe and out of the conflict?" she asks, nodding at the baby in her arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kill Plagueis before he can hurt her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, if she's going to die, she's going to die, so-

"I think you should take a nap first. And then maybe think about this a little longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Snicker.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to talk to that boy, anyways. I'm not running off immediately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your baby needs protection, actual defense, not- not just attacks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Starkiller goes solemn. "And she'll need a mom who isn't flying off the handle," she says, oddly gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath. She closes her eyes. "I know."

And, voice cracking: "I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to hold her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Unease flickers through her Force signature, there and gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny sigh. "I know you've held babies before."

"Just - put your mask on if you have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When did you get so bossy." Still - she takes another deep breath -

Permalink Mark Unread

And suddenly -

She doesn't feel like she's trained to use the Force anymore, let alone the Dark Side. Her emotions are - muffled. Sad and uneasy, but more under her control.

She's still hesitatant as she steps closer to Elesse, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will walk her through how to take and hold the baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

The baby is a little fussy about being moved - but perks up when her mother finally gets a good grip - and then promptly decides she really wants to be fed right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits, shrugging her top off to - a bit awkwardly - feed her daughter. (Luckily the baby seems to know what to do once she's close enough.)

And she stares down at her, expression soft and almost stunned. "She's so small," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She needs a name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anakin," she says, without even needing to think about it. (She feels like she's always known her daughter's name.) "Her name's Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good name."

"Hello, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Enthusiastic suckling noises!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Best tiny baby ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Certainly the greatest around.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's pretty sure 'in the universe' applies here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely so.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you going to do with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She sobers up a little.

"I can't allow you to leak any of this to the Jedi, or to where Plagueis can overhear. I also need someone capable of standing up to Force-trained enemies to defend my daughter."

"I'd prefer it if you willingly provided me with enough ongoing proof to be confident you aren't betraying me, and if you willingly took on a position as my daughter's guard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want to disappear me," she surmises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that's what it takes - though I'd also prefer to not get investigated by the Jedi for your disappearance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you'll be able to keep me full-time without questions one way or another."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not easily - at least not without your cooperation."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you cooperate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That depends on the details of your plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For your role in this, or for defeating Plagueis as a whole?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My role."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Faking your death," she says, "For how I keep you without the Jedi getting overly curious - they'll poke their noses in here, but I can use it to direct them at Plagueis."

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds... not as terrible as it maybe could have been.

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're willing, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To protect Anakin, I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

She strokes her daughter's head. "Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's that settled, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have you watch her while I question the boy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrmm. Being thanked by a Sith feels kinda weird.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"I'm going to rest briefly, but that boy is likely to start trying to wake up soon..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I take Anakin back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates.

Then: "We should get her into the nursery."

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes sense. Let's do that, then.

The nursery's status as a minor fortress isn't very visible from inside.

It's quiet and peaceful, with turquoise walls and ceiling painted with birds native to Naboo, and a tiny sheltered courtyard with a fountain and trellises laden with flowers off the main room, and space for two adult minders or guards to sleep, and nooks for awake guards both inside and in the courtyard and outside the doors, and dressers and changing table and crib and rocking chair painted a soft burnished gold, and gauzy curtains over the windows. The crib is between a guard's bed and a chair, and the beds are designed for co-sleeping. There's a few side rooms - a little kitchen, a bathroom, a pantry, a monitoring room with a charging station for the security droid, with spare weapons in assorted locations.

The suite has two desks and numerous bookshelves, too, already stocked with some things Lylí had expected to want to read while watching over her daughter, as well as an assortment of children's books.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not a bad setup, all told.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can bring in more books," she says. "And - since you know I'm a Sith anyways - I can bring things from my full library."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's no trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It isn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then- thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

She offers Anakin to Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Anakin gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy noises!

Permalink Mark Unread

"She likes you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like her too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a fortunate twist."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "A good opportunity to take advantage of." Her tone is maybe teasing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As expected of a Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was reaching for every advantage I could get long before Plagueis set his eyes on me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Politician, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hum.

"Other than the political service expected of all children from Naboo's royal houses - I didn't really consider myself a politician or have any political ambitions until after Plagueis - convinced me I should."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sigh.

"I should at some point explain - more about Plagueis..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get some rest first," Elesse advises.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny grumble. Then, sigh, and: "I'm planning to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you'll feel better for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is going to go sit down with Anakin, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses for a long moment, watching them -

Then turns and leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse amuses herself making faces at Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't seem able to really see very well just yet, but she's responding in the Force to Elesse's presence and warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

(And then there's a tiny murmur in the Force...)

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anakin starts fussing!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no, no, don't cry. Please don't cry, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Noooo she wants to cry! Upsetting things are happening!

Permalink Mark Unread

(But there's something - desyncing, almost, Anakin's Force signature calming down even as the baby remains fussy, a controlled edge to it - )

Permalink Mark Unread

...Wait. She squints at the baby.

Looks over to where she can- almost see the shape of a sitting girl.

"Who are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - You can see me?"

Her voice is distant, strange.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not- exactly." This... ghost feels strange in the Force. Just slightly skew from normal. "You're not from here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not."

The ghost's voice - the echo of her in the Force - shakes.

"I - I was in the crystal caves, on Ilum, and I picked up the crystal for my lightsaber, and - I've been seeing other me's, but not normal visions - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you... another Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"I - you're Elesse, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't have me until I was nine," she says, closing her eyes a little. "But - you're the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Her emotions smooth out - happier, more content - and the baby version of herself settles in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'll remember that."

She looks down and makes a funny face at the baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

She and the baby both giggle.

"Want advice?" Anakin asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't say no."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

"I mean - the first thing is, I don't think I'd do well in the creche, I wasn't raised a Jedi and my Elesse delayed bringing me to the Temple when she found me because it seemed - maybe unideal for me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think the creche is really going to be an option for this you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

"I think it would've been for me? If you'd found me. Though - I'm not sure, I'd have to ask Shmi if she would've given me up..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shmi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shmi Skywalker - she raised me. She then joined the Jedi when Elesse found me - somehow, even though she was too old - and gave me to Elesse, but... She didn't think she was good at raising me? And she thought Elesse would be better. And I dunno if she thought that same thing when I was a baby..."

" - You haven't met her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not by that name, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno if she's ever used a different name - but she hasn't actually told me about her past much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think things are already pretty different, if your Elesse didn't meet you until you were nine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"I'm - really glad you have your Anakin already. I - I don't regret having experienced my past at all, but it... Wasn't pleasant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope I can do better for this Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile. "I know you can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just make sure I've got lots of attachments that aren't you - you're just... Really awesome, and I think it'd be - really easy for me to get laser focused on you? But not having attachments is - bad for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll remember that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Learning to use the light side's been good for me - I was... Using the dark side when my Elesse found me, and it messed with my head kind of a lot? But - I can't do all the Jedi ways of using it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can make sure you learn that earlier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... I'm very adventurous with food, so sorry in advance about when I'm old enough to start shoving random plants in my mouth..." That kicks off a short ramble of innocuous things like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a nice change of pace to talk about relatively trivial little things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Anakin's a warm curl in the Force - but slowly, gradually, starts to fade out.

"I - think I'm moving on," she says, abruptly. " - Good luck, Elesse, and - "

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodbye, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"May the Force be with you."

And she closes her eyes -

And vanishes from Elesse's senses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. That was interesting," she says to the baby. "Don't you think so, little Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Coo!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, me too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile -

She doesn't, actually, have time to significantly rest. She sets her handmaidens to preparing the stage to fake both the boy and Elesse's deaths, eats, takes a shower and spends nearly half an hour staring blankly at a wall -

And she goes to the cells and reaches out to the Sith boy in the Force, nudging him awake.

Permalink Mark Unread

He comes to with a start, instinctively flinching.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits cross-legged on the floor, expression even and Force signature as calm as she can keep it. "What should I call you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maul."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A strong name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"From you? Or in general?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"From me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your service, as my knife and my apprentice."

"Plagueis is a weak fool who discards his tools rather than risk being cut. I don't fear you - rather, I see your potential, which is far greater than he'd ever allow you to reach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You- want to train me?"

"I tried to kill your servants."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You showed skill, and - I don't fault you for having belonged to Plagueis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's that easy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would watch you for a while - I'm ambitious, not stupid - but, yes. It's that easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Softly, "I don't want to die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to kill you."

"Plagueis would - he'd see this as a failure, no matter that he set you up for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you swear yourself as my apprentice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you have of me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your obedience, your diligence in learning, to not return or report to Plagueis, and to act as my knife only as I command you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shifts himself into a kneeling posture, and so swears.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I, Darth Sidious, swear to guide you well as my student, to hone you and keep you from unnecessary harm so long as you are my student."

"Rise, Darth Maul, and take your place among the Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you command, my master."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and opens his cell with the Force. "Come, apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

He stands and follows her out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll need to be introduced to my other servants," she says, "Though what I did to you wasn't a true rest, so I expect you to sleep, first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, master."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will sleep in my room for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." He's suprised, but not unhappy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

"I'll evaluate where you are in training tomorrow as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What kind of training?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever Plagueis has taught you, for the evaluation, or whatever you've figured out on your own."

Permalink Mark Unread

So he's got to confirm he's worth keeping. Okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll train you no matter the outcome," she says, firmly. "Plagueis has wasted your potential - and I need to see how much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But let's rest now, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is kinda tired...

To bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets him settled with a cot, and goes to check on Elesse and her daughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Both asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches them for a little bit, something in her chest relaxing.

She goes to fill some bottles for Anakin, then, and puts them in the nursery's fridge with a note for Elesse for when Anakin wakes up hungry.

And then she steps out, closes her eyes - and reaches out -

'Danni?'

(...She hadn't meant to call her apprentice that. But she... Struggles to think of herself through her Sith guise right now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Lyli?'

Permalink Mark Unread

-  She just pushes highlights of the last day at Danni, Anakin's birth and Maul's attack and her conversation with Elesse -

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm telling Rodanthe to pack up. We're setting course for Naboo.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It'll be risky.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Notice how that wasn't a question.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.'

'This is open war, now.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm not gonna let you fight alone.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I love you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Love you too. Can't wait to meet your baby.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Warmth flows across their bond. 'She's the best baby in the universe.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You did work very hard on making her.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Already giving me trouble.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Babies can be like that, I'm told.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Young children and teenagers, too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Not me, though. I'm a pure-hearted angel who has only ever helped you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Helpful trouble, certainly.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental impression of Danni sticking her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí somehow perfectly conveys the tactile sensation of having her hair ruffled.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'll let Shmi know to expect you - I'm going to get some sleep.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sleep well. I'll be there before you know it!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm looking forward to it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

A pulse of affection, then Danni goes to alert Rodanthe of their change in plans.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Lylí goes to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ro-dan-the~!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, dear?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flops into her large robotic girlfriend.

"We gotta leave early. Sidious needs me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snug. "Alright. What's wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She had her baby. And then like five minutes later Plagueis sent an assassin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She took care of the assassin, I presume?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He was like ten years old. She knocked him out and talked him around when he woke up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

"Let's pack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." But first, kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

To grant them strength for the tasks ahead.

Permalink Mark Unread

They've got to make sure they're operating at one hundred percent capacity.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fortunate that they'll have time to fuel up on the journey.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing to do in hyperspace but wait, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

And prepare.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of Rodanthe's favorite activities, as far as Salacis can tell.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does enjoy crafting plans in detail, making sure no opportunity is missed, and that everything is securely in its place...

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!!

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need to repeat her checks on the flight, obviously.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's important to make sure her results replicate.

Permalink Mark Unread

That nothing gets loose.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least not before it's ready to.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very good at your Force tricks, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can't all be extragalactic cyborg warrior explorer princesses."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug grin.

Then: "Speaking of things wriggling out of their place..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yyyyeeees?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She cups Salacis's cheek. "There's something I'd like to give to you, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh. I like presents."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft kiss.

She then removes a slim package from one of her bags.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grabby hands!

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and hands it over.

It's wrapped in a soft silvery paper, and the paper falls away to reveal a metal box with star charts etched into it - and a simple clasp, easily undone -

And within that, a dark red collar. It seems to have been modeled off of dog collars, with a heart-shaped tag on the front and a sturdy D-ring on the back, but it's made of densely woven metal, and the heavy buckle hides a complicated clasp.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gasps. "This is- really beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made it, just for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Very kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Help me put it on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

She lifts it from the box and undoes the clasp, explaining as she goes - "It should resist manipulation by your Force powers, or cutting by any tool in this galaxy, and the clasp has a trick needed to open it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I get to know the trick?" she giggles. "Or is this a permanent sort of arrangement?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to know it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmmm." Could be fun, actually not knowing... "I don't think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and kisses her girlfriend. "You'll need to beg if you ever want to take it off, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm. Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Luckily you beg very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You give me lots of reasons to practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be remiss to not provide you chances to improve yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's why I love you." Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adoring kiss, as she buckles Salacis's collar in place.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It fits perfectly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course it does - made it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should have remembered you do everything perfectly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems I'll need to educate you on that as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be in your care."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "I'll take good care of you, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Then back to packing?

Permalink Mark Unread

With Rodanthe's usual speed and efficiency, they're done with that and on their way promptly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lots of time for her to attend to Salacis, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exactly as planned.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mhm!

Permalink Mark Unread

And, soon enough, they're approaching Naboo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis lands them anonymously at the spaceport, and they pick up the pre-arranged speeder out to the Palpatine estate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Starkiller meets them in the outer ring of the compound.

"Welcome home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to be back. Has everything been okay, uh, since?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There haven't been any further attacks, and your Master is still resting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny smile. "It is."

"And it's good you got here so fast. Were there any incidents on your trip?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnno. Not the sort you mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her gazes fixes on Salacis's neck as she raises a knowing eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wigglegrin!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exciting news to give your Master, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh-huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I wake her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let her sleep. She doesn't get enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I heard we got a baby Jedi for a babysitter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes - she's rather taken with Anakin, luckily, and she hasn't protested being prevented from leaving."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Must be a seriously cute baby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sidious seems to think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess her charms are lost on you, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Shrug.

"She's a baby. They're not - interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's made Sidious a lot happier, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even with everything else that happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's only been a day, but..."

"I think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. Hopefully that trend bears out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it will - though Sidious is going to need ongoing support."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's why I came back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a room picked out for us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sidious has had a room set aside for you for a long time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww.

"Cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll show you to it, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please." Salacis helps Rodanthe get their bags.

Permalink Mark Unread

The room has clearly been decorated by someone who knows her pretty well. It's spacious, with a very lush bed with sturdy posts at each corner, and a sturdy grid for the head- and foot-boards. There's glass doors opening into a large inner courtyard, and beaded curtains, and two chests of drawers, and a big full-height mirror on one wall. The bedding has a pattern with shiny spaceships amid glittery stars, and there's glow in the dark star-stickers on the ceiling.

It's nicer than anywhere she's slept in well over seven years.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't contain the rush of happiness that sweeps over her.

Her Master knows her so well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this where you grew up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I haven't actually been here before. I lived with my dad when I was young, and Sidious would always come to our house. Later I lived with her in her townhouse, in Theed. Then after he died I had to go into hiding and I lived with Kayra, and then I started my Sith training and I've kinda been on the move ever since."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's been waiting to have you by her side, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure seems like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll take out Plagueis soon," she says then, voice quiet and intense.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll be able to live openly, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully. Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You deserve to, if you want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "Yeah, it's more a question of how the rest of the galaxy would take my resurrection."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "I'm sure someone would appreciate the break in the normal scandal cycle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet I can give them lots of normal scandals too, afterwards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep the tabloid writers well-employed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A vital public service, presented by me, the best and most generous celebrity resurrection."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "They'll be lining up to thank you personally."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might have to do some filtering on who actually gets to talk to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could build a droid for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "That would be cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maximize our efficiency."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And in the meantime, you'll have me to yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless the screening process catches some exceptionally qualified candidates."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything's possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially with us working on it." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"You're clever and talented, and I'm cute and strong. We've got all the bases covered."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't forget beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I definitely won't with that mirror there." She tugs Rodanthe into posing with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and wraps her arms around her girlfriend, making sure to highlight the difference in their heights.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yessss that's a very good view.

"We should get a holo taken like this sometime."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses the top of Salacis's head. "I can invent better cameras, I bet," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "That's what you say about everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm always right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's true, you are." Little bounce.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kissesssss.

And that bed's looking pretty inviting, maybe they should test it out...

Permalink Mark Unread

Build a full report for Sidious on how much they like the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does like her reports.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll make this one extra interesting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Promises, promises.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has Salacis ever known Rodanthe to not follow through on her promises?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's the sort of thing that needs continual verification.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Salacis is very fair.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "You are."

"Of course, a fair maiden should be treated appropriately for her station..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As the helpless hostage of a noble dragon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that's her fate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"According to the stories..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be remiss to treat her any other way, then." Scoop!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeeee!

Permalink Mark Unread

And bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

And meanwhile -

Lylí wakes up.

The first thing she does is get Security's report. (She decides not to bother her apprentice; she can feel that the girl is... Busy.)

The second thing she does is eat a quick, light breakfast.

The third thing is make her way over to the nursery.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey."

"How's Anakin been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little fussy sometimes, but most okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out for her baby in the Force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who reaches back and coos.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww.

"I had a vision," she says. "Of- an older Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits beside Elesse, expression growing more solemn. "What did you see?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was about my age, talked about gathering her saber crystal from Ilum..." Elesse briefly describes the conversation.

"And she felt- different, somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That's not a normal vision."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. It wasn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did she seem - like she was safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"At the- present, more or less. But... she said she had a hard time growing up. She was raised by someone named Shmi."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Shmi?" She makes a face. " - But she wouldn't hurt my daughter, ever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think there were extenuating circumstances there? But she didn't want to focus on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...A lot would've had to go wrong for Shmi to be - any kind of sole caregiver."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"But I think we're pretty far away from that, because she said there was another me, but they hadn't met until Anakin was nine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Would you hide it from her, if you got separated and then only met her again when she was nine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A vision of what might have been, then..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The other Anakin was training as a Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't want that for her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She said... that learning the light side was better for her state of mind than using the dark."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet for a long, solemn moment.

"The Dark Side requires you to be - tough. Halfway to broken, then built back up, over and over."

"I haven't been able to do it for - my apprentice. I had to just... Subcontract that."

"Shmi would be able to do it, though. Even if she doesn't use the Dark Side herself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't sound good for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It makes you strong. So you can shape the galaxy, rather than be shaped or destroyed by it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People aren't- made of steel. You can't melt them down, reforge them, and expect them to be the same. They wouldn't- survive that process."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that was meant to be the point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And that's bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't be strong enough to do it to my daughter. Not even strong enough to make someone else do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't destroy every threat before it gets to her. She - needs to be able to defend herself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The dark side isn't her only option."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't bet on a Jedi against a Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should kill the other Sith before it becomes an issue, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if I fail?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you'll have to bet on a Jedi against a Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd go against Plagueis yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not alone. But yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'll kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will he kill the whole High Council?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think his life goal is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't mean he can do it alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He can't. He's myopic and a fool, and if I and my apprentices die, he'll have significantly more trouble controlling the dark side until he can find someone else to replace me. -  That means he'll be more powerful if he does fully reach for it, but it'll try to destroy him more ferociously than usual."

"That doesn't mean he can't take Anakin out with him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He won't get to her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I want him dead before her training becomes an issue, anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...He probably isn't dead, in - the world of that vision you had."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'd need to kill him here before following him there, but - "

"I don't want any version of Anakin to have him hanging over her head."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's going to be- a lot of work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't care."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"All right. Let me know what I can do to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny smile.

"Protect Anakin - and tell me when you think I'm making mistakes or missing something."

"I could possibly also use your help with my sudden new apprentice," she says, somewhat wryly. "And definitely with helping refine my older apprentice's fighting skills."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as that doesn't interfere with babysitting time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can take her those times - and we can time spars between the two of us for her naps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like it should work out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"I want you to get as much experience fighting darksiders as you can, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will be helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your other apprentice- are they here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She arrived while I was sleeping, apparently."

"...She's Danni Kim. I faked her death to protect her from Plagueis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out to brush Anakin's head.

"After her family died - her father couldn't care for her, so I took her in. I kept up with my obligations to Plagueis, as well as my training, but he... Didn't approve of the distraction. And I think he didn't like that I was trying to be less - angry all the time."

"So he ordered me to kill her and her father."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You staged the explosion on the ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the kidnapping. And I manipulated the vigilante rescuers into position."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All just to save her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't bother saving her father, but - "

"Danni's another person I'll never let Plagueis hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Your precious people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah."

"They're mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good to have people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't have thought of that as a Jedi sentiment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm only a padawan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you give up your people to become a Master, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Connections are important. No one can live in a vacuum. A Jedi looks for balance, to be tethered to the galaxy but not bound by it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Anakin in Elesse's arms - who seems to be trying very hard to form unbreakably deep Force bonds to both Elesse and her mother - and then looks at Elesse, expression somewhat deadpan.

"That sounds like motivated reasoning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you sure you want to be trying to pick holes here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"Plagueis's greatest threat isn't physical. It's his ability to maneuver. His ability to pick at people, to find their weak points, to shatter everything of who they are and who they wanted to be."

"If a light conversation can find holes, then, yes, I want to pick at them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All reasoning is motivated. Again, no one exists in a vacuum. We're all affected by our circumstances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you do if your High Council told you your attachment to Anakin was inappropriate for a Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would thank them for their insight and ask if that meant they felt I should retire from the Order."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if they said you should choose between Anakin and being a Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I would leave the Order. But they can't make me stop being a Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd keep to your own judgment about what it means, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Every Jedi should, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you're unlike most Jedi I've met or heard of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your perspective is probably a little distorted."

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts.

"A little."

"That doesn't mean it's entirely false, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "The Jedi Code is an ideal. Not everyone can reach their ideals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you reaching your ideals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm trying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are your ideals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want- to be a person who always knows where I am going, and how to get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where are you going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To see Anakin grow up safe, right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "We're going the same way, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"Give her to me," she says then, holding her arms out for her daughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse passes Anakin over carefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, beautiful," she murmurs, cradling Anakin.

She's pretty content to sit here and interact with her baby for a good while (definitely until after Salacis is done with testing her bedroom).

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will take the opportunity to see to some of her own needs, like a shower, then settle down with a book from Lyli's library.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Salacis does finish testing her bedroom eventually.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out in the Force when her apprentice feels both finished and recovered.

'Having fun?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You know I always am.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You like the room, then?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I love it!! You're the best.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Warm glow.

'I've missed you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

'Can we talk in person?' she asks eagerly.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Is this a talk we can have while I'm holding a baby?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It can be! I wanna meet her too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Come over to the nursery, then.' She nudges forward the way to her current location.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Be right there.'

Does Rodanthe want to come too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might get awkward..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. You can meet the baby later, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin and kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

Then: "Do you want me to take the collar off you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think that would be a good idea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think your Master might think it's more serious than it is if she sees it without an explanation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Good point." She does have a tendency to freak out sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She loves you a lot, and she doesn't know how to handle it," she says, wryly. "And I suspect I'm already better at human relationships than she is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very possible! Okay, collar off, please."

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches up and undoes it, giving Salacis a quick kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep it safe for me, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Then off to see her master.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's fallen asleep on her chest, so she doesn't stand when her apprentice enters, just smiles softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww cute.

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey there." She pats the bed beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits, leaning into Lyli.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wraps her arm around Danni, taking care not to jostle Anakin.

"It's been too long," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cuddle. "Yeah. It's good to be home."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gentle kiss. "It hasn't been home without you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "Well, here I am."

"Hi Anakin," she says to the baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmrm?

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw sleepy baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were almost this cute at her age," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My cuteness has only grown with age."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll grant you that." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

"That bodes well for little Anakin, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Infinite potential cuteness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd better prepare yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"By investing in better holo cameras, certainly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee. "Good plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. "I've kept all your old holos, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't want proof of how cute you were?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I feel like that's not the only thing those holos will show."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I swear everything in them is just plain cuteness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Maybe it'll be all right, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can show you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay."

Permalink Mark Unread

A thick album of holo discs comes floating off of one of the higher shelves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Picture time!

Permalink Mark Unread

Pictures!

Lylí is very sure these pictures of nine year old Danni with a self-applied hair cut (prior to their trip to the hairdresser) are, actually, just plain cuteness. Pretty sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nooooo she knew it was a trap!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't agree?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Vague grumble noises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This isn't even the cutest set!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please don't be the mud pie summer, please don't be the mud pie summer..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She has one even better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaaaaahhhhh why does she love this woman!

Permalink Mark Unread

Bright warm glow.

"Well, you are a masochist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not for emotions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So this isn't fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. A little bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep going, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle! "Kay."

Permalink Mark Unread

More cute pictures! Many from before Lylí was the one raising her - some from after, apparently Lylí was paying for holos too.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least she got her money's worth.

Permalink Mark Unread

More than.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I heard you got a new apprentice, too. Is he cute?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very, though a wary tooka kitten kind of cute right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poor baby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"I think he'd benefit from meeting you - though you might alarm him a little bit at first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be a good learning experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're learning well from me," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're my role model."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "Maybe not the best you could pick..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still the only one I want."

Permalink Mark Unread

I love you, she says in Danni's mind, her words bringing all the overwhelming force of her adoration with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeeee it's really too bad there's a tiny baby right here.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'll be a learning experience about anticipation, or something like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valuable experience, surely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Enjoyable as well as educational.

Permalink Mark Unread

The best part about learning from her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where my true talent as a teacher lies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You make knowledge sexy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need to figure out new methods for Anakin and Maul, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you could always just stall for a couple years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Maul's going to need some re-training sooner rather than later."

"Though... I might leave Anakin's training to Elesse, either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. I didn't expect that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...She's good with Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"And - I don't want to have to - teach Anakin to handle the Dark Side. I don't want her to have to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. There is that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elesse also had a vision. About Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Involving them together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounded like - she spoke to an Anakin about her age, from a - timeline that could have been."

"I believe her, that she saw what she did - and - "

"That Anakin was Elesse's student. A Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to give my daughter to the Order - I'm not giving her up, I'm going to be here and raise her - but - I can just keep Elesse, let the Order think she's dead. Have her help with Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You really like faking girls' deaths."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks and then laughs. "It works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When the only tool you have is an elaborate web of deception and sublimated thirst for violence..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The thirst for violence gets satisfied plenty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, yeah, otherwise you'd have a whole harem of disappeared girls taking up my bedroom before I even got here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm much pickier than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

Adoring kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kisses!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny giggle.

"Why don't I introduce you and Elesse," she murmurs, "And then we can leave Anakin with her for a bit..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft kiss.

And hup?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hup!

Permalink Mark Unread

And Elesse is easy to find.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is Elesse Vendar," she tells Danni. Then, to Elesse: "And this is my apprentice, Danni Kim - or Darth Salacis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!! It's good to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Really not what she was expecting from a Sith. Or her vague knowledge of Danni's brother.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's very unique, isn't she?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unique, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Preen preen.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses her apprentice's cheek and then ruffles her hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I hear you're gonna be the next one to die. Don't worry, it's not that bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Shaní - who is also Shmi Skywalker - is about ready to fake both your and Maul's deaths, though we'll need to time who's where around that, and there's still some prep left."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me know where I need to go, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you leave a false trace for psychometry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can help," she says. "And Shmi can explain what she does."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And - "

"You will be the one primarily training Anakin as she grows older."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be expecting impressive results."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's gotta be at least as good as me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "On the important measures, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which measures are those, exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes a bit quiet.

Then: "I want her to have the power - the mental stability - she needs to live up to her ideals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make sure of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not giving her to the Order," she warns, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I understand. She'll be with me, not the Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Firm nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isn't she a sweet little padawan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lylí approves.

Permalink Mark Unread

So were they going to drop Anakin with her?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

"I'm leaving her with you for a bit," she tells Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't have too much fun without us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know I can make that promise," she says as she takes the baby. "Isn't that right, Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy noises! And clumsy flail, and that bright presence in the Force reaches for Elesse again (though doesn't let go of Lylí, not yet).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll tolerate some fun," she allows, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you later, Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

And out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to go see a baby who is slightly less baby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has Maul left her suite?

Permalink Mark Unread

He has not. Still perched on the bed where she left him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She introduces them to each other (as 'Darth Maul' and 'Darth Salacis'), then says: "You'll work together as my apprentices."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Maul is... less immediately enthusiastic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny smile. "Maul, Salacis will be helping to train you as well, as the senior apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Understood."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and flashes a thumbs-up. "It'll be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

His return smile is more a baring of teeth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's put you through your paces first, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Maul stands obediently.

Permalink Mark Unread

To the sparring area, then, in the part of the estate that houses the barracks and training facilities of her security team.

Permalink Mark Unread

How will they be going about this?

Permalink Mark Unread

They can start with a spar. Hand to hand, no weapons except their bodies and the Force.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shucks his shirt and begins stretching.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't need to strip any - she's already wearing clothes she can move in - but she starts stretching as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

When he's warmed up, he takes position in the ring. His stance is very classically Sith, an old style.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mirrors him in her opening stance - though she wasn't really using a classic style when they fought earlier - and waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives it a five-count, then attacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets him - weaves aside at the last moment, not a move from this form - strikes at his shoulder -

And begins asking questions.

History questions, to start.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not very learned in history.

Permalink Mark Unread

She skims through topics until she finds something he can answer - while never letting up her attack on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's most educated in practical subjects, ones with immediate relevance to fighting or infiltration.

And he's cool enough under the pressure of the fight to keep answering.

Permalink Mark Unread

She drills as deep as she can - sees how fast he'll collapse.

Permalink Mark Unread

That happens quicker mentally than physically.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps up the pace physically after he runs out of answers for her, until she's driven him into the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes some work, but it's doable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not much is beyond her.

"You did well," she says over his panting body, "But your education has serious gaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you, say, master."

Permalink Mark Unread

She summons a fortified drink over and sits beside him, offering it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He sits up enough to drink it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting you out of bad habits shouldn't be hard, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't seem like he has very many of them," Salacis diagnoses. She's been watching the fight with a professional eye.

Permalink Mark Unread

"None with how he moves," she confirms. "Though some with how he uses the Force - still, far fewer than I'd expect from Plagueis's tutelage." She turns to him. "You've done better than your teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Isn't that supposed to be you, now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," she says. "But the teacher you had matters to your past, and to what foundation we start with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"I'll start you with context," she says. "For the missions you'll run, for the forms you're learning, for everything going on here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Things don't always go according to plan, for one. You'll need to know how to adjust on the fly. And, you'll need to have enough context to spot when something doesn't make sense."

"And as you grow older - I want you to be able to operate more independently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mean like, setting my own missions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh.

That... might be fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Knowing smirk. "And perhaps your own goals, someday - but it'll be good for you to be able to work independently towards our shared goals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "I can tell you what mine are, and you can tell me what you share - but we both want you to grow into your full potential."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. That sounds like a good place to start. And better than what Plagueis offered.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll take time for you to figure out your own goals," she says, quietly. "It always does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'll think about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll get there. And you can always ask for help."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles over at Salacis. "And that's how I'll take down Plagueis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With our help!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly, love."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and beckons Salacis over for a kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Such a wonderful girl.

"We need to move quickly on planning," she murmurs against Salacis's lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm ready when you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Another soft kiss. "Let's get the others together, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!"

Permalink Mark Unread

To that, then - and to the work of slotting the last few of their plans into place.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'll be work- but they've got this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

And Sidious has done much of the preparation already - they'll be on the move soon. (Especially Elesse and Maul - Sidious needs them out of the compound soon - and she's sending her daughter with them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will keep Anakin safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will," she says, trying to sound firm and threatening and not like she trusts the tiny Jedi for some reason.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will."

"A question, before we go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you plan to do after he's dead?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Raise my daughter."

Then, quietly:

"I don't know what my other goals are. The politics - that was all Plagueis's idea. But I want a galaxy my daughter can - be herself in."

"Where Danni can be herself in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - something that's been taken from us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you can get it back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can give it to them. That's what matters."
