She's told the plan is proceeding well. Across the galaxy, simmering conflicts are igniting into open violence and the Jedi are pulled in all directions at once. For every crisis like Naboo they resolve, there's one like Os-Kerso that they can't see to. The Republic's member systems are nervous, and the time approaches when they will be looking for strong leadership. Her leadership.

(Despite her origins, she's come along very well. She will be a suitable face for the return of Sith dominance. So she's told. She takes the rage that sparks in her every time she hears him say those words and buries it deep, fuel for the infinite pyre of her power.)

Os-Kerso is a binary system with one native species, the Ossians. Kerso was settled by Coreworld colonists before the intelligence of the inhabitants of Os was recognized. Relations between the two planets have not significantly improved from that point. The Kersan have maintained a technological edge and control most of the trade that flows through the system, but the Senatorial delegation is comprised of Ossians, and it was therefore the Ossians the Republic peacekeeping troops backed during the recent conflict over tariff duties. The Ossian victory was more due to the fact that the Republic troops had transports that the Ossians could use than any more direct contribution. Eight battles, four bombed-out cities, one stormed capital, thirty-seven Republic force casualties and six hundred thousand civilian deaths later, both sides have finally agreed to a ceasefire pending peace negotiations.

And now she needs to be the one to overseer it, to publicly taste the aftermath of war and declare the need for a better way, to have the ability to stop this before it started. Sometimes she hates her job.

Senator Elesse Vendar of Alderaan waits for her Jedi escort at one of the landing pads on the Senate Tower. Senator Vendar displays none of the displeasure Darth Sidious feels. Senator Vendar is a loyal public servant, and will diligently see this conflict resolved to everyone's satisfaction. She hopes the Jedi will be of aid in this endeavor.

(Though where were they while the war was hot? A question she can subtly work into the after-action report, perhaps.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She's being assigned a Jedi Master with a long track record with difficult negotiations and complex diplomatic situations - a record full of rather startling successes. It's hard to say what the Jedi Temple's internal politics are like, but the Senators who've worked with Jedi Master Palpatine have spoken well of her, by and large, or at least had to reach for ill things to say. Her teacher was Mace Windu, the current Grandmaster of the Order, which also has several Senators patting themselves on the back for supposedly winning her ear.

She's early, arriving not too long after Senator Vendar, and she bows at an appropriate distance (the motion is perfectly Alderaanian) as she greets the Senator and introduces herself -

- And her fourteen year old padawan.

"And this is Anakin Skywalker," she says. "We'll be accompanying you on this mission."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bows as well, a step behind her teacher. (Her form's just as smooth.)

"I'm looking forward to our work together, Senator," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She returns their greeting. "A pleasure to meet you both." And a smile for Anakin. (The girl is strong, strong enough to be noteworthy.) "It is always good to meet the future of the Jedi. Your order does so much for the Republic."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "As much as we can, Senator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do appreciate it, especially in times such as these."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." She ducks her head a little, grinning. But then, more seriously: "This mission is going to need a lot of that effort."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will. I do not think any of the involved parties will be very happy with whatever sort of peace settlement comes of these negotiations- But hopefully everyone will at least be satisfied."

Permalink Mark Unread

Serious nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'd like to discuss strategy on the flight, for that very reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My staff is already on the ship. I reserved a shuttle for us, and it it is..." She looks around a moment, then points. "Over there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Thank you."

Over to the shuttle, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Over to the shuttle, and then to the spaceport where the diplomatic vessel is waiting to launch.

Permalink Mark Unread

She signals for Anakin to take the lead initially.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who has questions! About the Senator's assessment of the situation and participants, who's likely to act how, if she has any information not in the briefing, how she plans to approach this...

They're pretty insightful questions, and she clearly knows a lot about what they're going into already.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has very thorough answers- quite a bit off the top of her head, but some details she has delegated to her staffers.

She does praise Anakin's depth of inquiry. It is sadly all too rare, even among her colleagues.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny blush.

"I have a very good teacher," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My compliments to her as well. But the best teacher in the galaxy can do nothing if the student is unwilling."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

"True," she acknowledges. Then: "I enjoy learning. And people are interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They do come in incredible variety."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And I like complicated stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have certainly chosen the correct mission."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We always get the fun assignments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sorts of things have you done?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She can chatter about that a good bit - successfully avoiding any details that a Senator might not have access to. They get sent on a lot of diplomatic missions, and a lot of stuff involving protecting Senators or other politicians. Lots of academic missions, too - assisting in and guarding archeological endeavors, escorting scholars or library collections through contested space, investigating leads on historic artifacts...

Her teacher actually found Anakin on a diplomatic mission. Lily Palpatine had been the Jedi Master initially assigned to protect Queen Amidala of Naboo during some negotiations with the Trade Federation and several of Naboo's neighbors who'd been heavily aligned with the Federation. The talks failed, the planet was blockaded, and Queen Amidala was attacked, so Lily guarded her on their way to Coruscant to ask for aid for her planet. They were forced to land on Tatooine on the way, where they found Anakin, and Anakin left the planet with them.

(The Naboo Crisis was a turning point in many, many ways; Jedi Master Lily Palpatine had made quite a few waves in successfully and strongly tying both Gardulla the Hutt and the Trade Federation to criminal darksiders and anti-Republic activity - and to each other. Gardulla's empire had been shattered by the Jedi, and while the Trade Federation still exists, its influence is a tiny fraction of what it once was, and the Jedi are still tearing it apart five years later.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(So it was this Jedi that broke the Naboo plan. Interesting. Sidious may owe her a debt of gratitude, then.)

Elesse remembers that time well. In many ways, it set the stage for the years since.

She also has a passing interest in archaeology. It's possible that she helped fund some of the expeditions Anakin has aided.

Permalink Mark Unread

She knows most of the grant programs the ones with Senate funding were using, so she can compare notes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is rapidly proving herself to be an exceptionally well put-together young woman.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "I've got a good memory. And I'm pretty sure knowing too much about something is actually just impossible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A fine attitude, and one I share, to the extent my time permits."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "It's a pity you can't spend as much time on that as you want... Having the opportunity to spend my time learning is - it's really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the perils of adulthood and having a career, I am afraid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some careers are more friendly to learning than others, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True. Though alas, more than those are necessary for a functional society."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the great tragedies of the galaxy," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps. Though the work is necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

Serious nod. "It is. And it's good you're doing it." Then, teasingly again: "Though I'm pretty sure the point of us young and bright students is enabling you to retire someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would not be opposed, in the fullness of time. Though it was my understanding Jedi do not dabble directly in politics."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Surely there's some young bright Alderaanian students out there, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yes, my office hosts interns every summer. I make them attend the budget committee's organizational meetings, and tell them they will be taking those notes for the first five years of their careers. It is a quite effective way to determine which of them are worth our investment."

Permalink Mark Unread

Even more giggle. "Lily has me do a lot of the grunt work for investigations and research and all," she says. "It's not that bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches over and ruffles Anakin's hair. "Possibly I need to make you deal with other people fighting about incredibly stupid ways to spend money more often, if you still think that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at her teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, the organizational meetings are worse than that. People fighting about incredibly stupid ways to fight about incredibly stupid ways to spend more money."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good learning experience, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're both sadists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call it the weight of our worldly experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The older you get, the more you realize the great joy of tormenting your students?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Preparing the bright young things to better enable our retirement."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Well, fortunately I'm a weirdo who likes hard lessons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One to keep an eye on, then."

(For more reasons than one.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and ducks her head a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

(...Cute girl.)

"What sort of hard lessons do the Jedi teach?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hum. "There's advanced stuff of course, but the - stuff that's actually hard to accept you need to learn... Self control's a big one. Knowing yourself - what you value, what you want from yourself, what your goals are, and why they're your goals. Admitting when you've acted out of alignment with those, and then trying to do better. That one... That's the hardest for me, by a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds very... philosophical."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, real philosophy is just - the life you live, the life you want to live, and how you'd describe it. Many people just abstract everything concrete away until nonsense sounds plausible and sense sounds bad."

"But if I'm - like, if I'm trying to write a budget, and I keep failing, then I'm not succeeding at my goals, and I need to sit down and identify why I'm doing this, what I want out of it, how I'd get that - and what I'm doing wrong, since I'm not getting what I want. And if there's tradeoffs, I'll want to know what those actually are and what they're actually worth."

"And you have to remove your own ego from how you judge the world if you want to actually do that, right?"

"Like, if you sit there insisting that you're very excellent at budgets, and this budget just keeps failing to balance or getting rejected because everyone else is an idiot with terrible priorities and this budget software is badly designed and this form is dumb, and it'd all be better if everyone magically listened to you and designed things correctly - it doesn't even really matter if that's all true or not, because if you sit there waiting for people to magically realize you've been right all along and they should acknowledge your brilliance and stop arguing with you, you're going to be sitting there a very long time. And if you keep not achieving your goals, you're not as good at this as you think you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cogently stated. Your self is what you can control, so one should ensure that they do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "Yeah. And self control is hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you give that talk to my interns? It would do them good to hear, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Give me a little bit to polish it, but I'd be happy to help out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Serving the Republic is a Jedi's duty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then on behalf of the Republic, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile, and she draws the conversation into more about Anakin's training with the Jedi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which she's pretty happy to chatter at length about - though she does respond with her own questions about Elesse's work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is more than willing to answer Anakin's questions as well. Curiosity is a good look on her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good!

Anakin can keep this up until pretty late in the evening - and she seems to have forgotten that humans generally need to eat, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

The nice thing about traveling with a staff is that it's someone's job to remember when meals are, and to bring the meals to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin also needs to be poked into eating instead of letting her food go cold (though her teacher seems pretty used to providing gentle reminders).

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse might have to insist they take a break to eat, then. She pays the cook very well, and it would be almost criminal to waste his efforts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will be stopping to eat, anyway, even if Anakin doesn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Since everyone's insisting...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's for her own good, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out. "Except that figuring out what's my own good is my job."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Consider it friendly advice, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "I'll accept that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

The food is extremely delicious, too, and she sets in with a very hedonistic relish once she stops getting distracted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seconds?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

There's plenty.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Her energy is winding down some by the time they finish dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll be in transit for a few more days.

Permalink Mark Unread

Plenty of time to keep picking Elesse's brain tomorrow, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed. And more time to prepare for the summit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. They've got a lot of details to work out, still...

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll make it work.

Permalink Mark Unread

It isn't even all that hard or painful, just a little bit time consuming. (Master Palpatine and Anakin are much easier to work with than effectively anyone else Elesse has had to coordinate with on this sort of thing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they'd consider more attache work with her in the future, if this goes well?

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin glances at her teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who smiles. "If you need us again, we'll be happy to help when we're free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wonderful. I'll make a note to request you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

And in due time, they arrive. The negotiations are happening at the Kersan capital, a compromise position that doesn't really make anyone very happy. This is reflected in the diplomats' attitudes- Elesse, as the moderator, needs to call for frequent breaks to let everyone cool off.

Most of the time she will use these opportunities to speak to one side or the other in private, but occasionally she needs to take some time away too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Things are tense enough that the Jedi prefer keeping a guard with Elesse - usually Anakin, while Master Palpatine works people around independently.

Anakin feels like she's learning a lot at least - but she's getting pretty tired, too, and she uses a lot of the time they spend withdrawing to cool off and strategize talking about anything else.

This is one of those times. Anakin flops on a couch, sighing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Welcome to the other side of politics from budget meetings."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tired smile. "I prefer doing the grunt work, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is not for everyone. Not only wisdom but patience is required."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have both of those," she says with a laugh. "Though I'll admit I'm still working on 'patience.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sure this is good practice, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably is." Shrug. "I don't mind doing it, though, and parts of it are interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The excuses to avoid the solution everyone knows we are working towards that are concocted are creative, if nothing else."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "They get repetitive after a while, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The trick is getting all involved parties to agree to that. Then the work begins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll probably get more fun as I get better at it, too - I'm pretty sure Lily's idea of fun is talking people into deciding they've always agreed with her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A clever trick, if one can pull it off consistently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She and some of the other negotiation specialists have this really long running game going on, and they've added a lot of rules around maneuvering against each other. The others keep trying to team up against her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse laughs. "That sounds like fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you can ask her to explain the rules to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure I'd be able to compete on a level field with a group of Jedi..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're pretty good at diplomacy stuff, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for the compliment, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Honestly expressing your opinion is important, when you can get away with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you good at judging when you can get away with it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what teachers are for. To help me learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose that is true. Though you should not ever feel the need to censor yourself around me, Anakin. I enjoy hearing your thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Though I might keep a few of them to myself if there's sensitive ears in the room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To share later?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I feel like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Sharing my thoughts with you is fun, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Good.)

"Good," she smiles. "Already I can hardly remember how I passed my days without your thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out. "Now you're just being silly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even Senators sometimes feel the urge. Do Jedi not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She drops into a teasingly conspiratorial tone. "They do. The stoic demeanor is actually the galaxy's longest running practical joke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Incredible. I truly had no idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We excel at deadpan snark."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall carefully review my notes and memories of interactions with Jedi for corroborating evidence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you'll find everything I say is accurate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have yet to give me cause to doubt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try to avoid doing that in the future, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you will, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I like being reliable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will take you far in life, I am sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you tell me more about what the Jedi are like, Anakin? I have always found the traditions around the Force... fascinating."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "If you tell me more about Alderaan and the Senate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An equitable exchange. Very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

She relaxes while they chat about their respective spheres - Anakin joined the Order at nine, much later than is normal for those getting training as a potential Knight rather than joining the Service Corps, so she has a bit of an odd perspective compared to most Jedi.

Her teaching line is also apparently unusual - she brags a bit about her grandmaster, Mace Windu, which leads into her animatedly rambling about lightsaber forms and then about her friends - one of them, Djedzu, spars with her a lot and is determined to develop an entirely new lightsaber form, apparently. Ze's making pretty determined headway into mastering all the existing ones, according to Anakin.

It sounds like she has about six people really directly tying her to the Jedi, and one of those is a bit of a dubious tie - her master Lily, her grandmaster Mace, her mother Shmi who joined the Jedi only five years ago (and who sounds like she's not very firmly anchored to the Jedi), and then three friends among the other padawans - Djedzu, Joul, and Kalra.

She mostly asks questions about Elesse's own life. Where she grew up. What was it like. What are her favorite places in Alderaan or Coruscant.

Permalink Mark Unread

(There are certainly... opportunities in cultivating this girl.)

Elesse grew up in the Juran region of Alderaan, so living at altitude as in the Coruscant skyscrapers is familiar to her. Though of course the Alderaanian mountains offer a better view, she adds. She keeps landscapes on the walls of her office to remind her of home, jagged grey peaks capped with snow gnawing at the sky above the lush green valleys. She did a lot of hiking when she was younger, taking a full pack and a walking stick and losing herself in the wilderness for a week at a time. Coruscant doesn't offer so many opportunities in that way, but she enjoys the other entertainments it has. The opera and the ballet, the finest galactic cuisine...

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin loves hiking, though - people are fun, and hedonism is really nice, and she likes art and stories, too. Lily took her on a hiking trail once as a gift for one of Anakin's Life Days, that wound through some really pretty mountain valleys on a trail that connected several hundred art galleries and old theaters and dance halls... She didn't get to see them all, but it was a lot of fun. Coruscant has some interesting stuff, but... Anakin likes worlds with nature, and she especially prefers worlds that aren't just - some pretty golden foil papering over a mountain of sapient misery, honestly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those are sadly becoming all too rare these days.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's - not sure it's a 'becoming.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps not. The galactic community is less willing to ignore it when it is present, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

A pretty big prerquisite to fixing things, though - people can't object to things they don't know about.

Permalink Mark Unread

True- though again as with the negotiations, establishing common knowledge of the problem is only the beginning of the process of gathering the will to agree on and work towards a solution.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, but - the process is more begun than it was, so it's an opportunity to do that gathering."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse nods. "Which may also contribute to the feeling that the problem is actively growing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... The galaxy isn't - the type of place to be in a steady equilibrium, though, and lots of things are getting worse. But it's been bad for a long time, too, and it's important to know how recently problems started and how they've changed to know how to address them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

And then the room is rattled by the blast of an explosion.

Permalink Mark Unread

She moves to Elesse, hand on her lightsaber, and taps her communicator to ask for updates.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was that?" Elesse asks at the same moment, jolting upright.

There's a lot of confusion on the comms immediately but- it seems like one or other of the diplomats' rooms may have been targeted.

Permalink Mark Unread

"An attack," she says, and the Force twists around her, reaching out. "Lily's coordinating a response. I need to get you to safety."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who got hit? Where are we going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was an explosion nearby the Ossian delegation's suite, and a lot of confusion on the ground."

"We're making our way to the ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, lead the way." She stands- just in time for another bomb to go off.

"Sithspit!" she hisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't wait for the comms - reaches out to Lily, casts her awareness out in a blazing net in the Force - identifies the blasts' location, and relays it into her comm with an eerily even tone.

It was pretty close to the path to their ship.

(Anakin starts trying to identify minds that might be enemies, though she doesn't relay that to anyone other than Lily just yet - she's always been faster at this than her teacher, even as a child. Lily holds herself within her own skin in ways Anakin doesn't.)

She turns to Elesse, then. "Follow me." And she starts towards a side door, following a hunch in the Force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse follows, slightly nervy but keeping things under control if Anakin checks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She successfully gets them pretty far even as the overall situation deteriorates - and then they come up to the outskirts of some fighting. It looks like several of the diplomatic staff have been cornered, and there's not enough guards to really push away the attackers.

Anakin and Elesse haven't been seen yet, and Anakin hesitates, visibly torn.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Hm. She could turn this further to her advantage...)

"We should help," she says to Anakin. "They'll be slaughtered."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, jerkily, and takes a deep breath, clenching her unlit lightsaber more firmly. "There's spaces you could take shelter nearby," she says, quietly and quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to leave you to fight alone. And these are my staffers."

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a good bit, then holds out a hand and stealthily summons a dropped blaster to them. "Can you use this?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In theory." She takes the blaster, checks the safety and the charge level, sights down it, then holds it loosely at her side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Approving nod.

And, a quick moment to plan - Anakin clearly understands combat very well, even in a chaotic situation like this - and then they're moving, Anakin igniting her deep amethyst lightsaber to deflect a cluster of bolts aimed at the staff she just jumped in front of. She fights well, too - she's using Shien right now, supplementing heavily with the Force, and she's pretty quickly altering the tide of battle. Her lightsaber blurs as she blocks further shots, and she begins to advance.

(Her attention is very much focused on the enemies in front of her, though - she's not perfectly keeping up her awareness of her surroundings right now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse covers her from the side, aiming high and keeping the attackers' heads down.

Until (with a subtle pulse of influence) a pair of men break off to circle around and come at Anakin from her blind spot. They line up their shots and she gets a sudden intuition of danger almost too late-

-And Elesse steps forward and drops them both, blaster bolts whizzing past Anakin's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sithspit.

She flinches only a little, then sends Elesse a grateful look and turns back to the fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems to be more or less the turning point of the fight- these men didn't think they would be against a Jedi directly, and the two that fell took the group's morale with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She arrests them, naturally, once they realize the wisdom of surrender. They can explain their plans to the nice polite girl with a laser sword and then go cool their heels in a locked room (with no weapons or communication devices), how about?

Permalink Mark Unread

They're not the biggest fans of the idea, but the girl is both very nice and polite, and very does have a laser sword. So. They're amenable.

Permalink Mark Unread

How good of them to see reason like this.

She also helps make sure the injured staffers are identified and triaged - and she glances at Elesse before deciding if they're also going to escort the injured to the medical area.

"We seem a bit less needed, right now," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you all right, Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Just..." She shakes her head. And, very quietly: "I don't like being at the edges of the action like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am glad to have you with me, if nothing else."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I'm glad to be with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse smiles back. "Shall we continue on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

She makes sure the group they rescued is able to get moving, or course, but - onwards then with her and Elesse, still making their way towards the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

This goes well for another little while- there's sounds of fighting around but nothing else in their path.

And then an explosion above them collapses the corridor they're in around them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reacts fast, grabbing Elesse and moving her out of the way of the debris - and she grabs a significant amount of it with the Force, but there's too many moving parts for her to confidently get it all -

She gets them both against the strongest intact wall - and does her best to settle the rubble with a priority on leaving a stable pocket for them, second priority on it being relatively easy to dig them out, third on size -

They'll have plenty of air. She's successfully left some circulation. And they have room to move if things shift, and they're not at high risk of being crushed.

But, well. Space is a bit tight, especially comfortable space, and Anakin is still pressing Elesse against the wall, breath coming hard and fast and her fear just now catching up to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is shocked, for a few seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was... sudden."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin starts shaking.

Luckily, she's already settled everything. (She'd already settled everything before she consciously processed the explosion.)

She laughs, dryly, almost hysterically, and presses her face into the middle of Elesse's chest, her knees going weak.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Very nice.)

Elesse wraps her arms around Anakin. "You have good reflexes," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Weak giggle. "If you think those were good, you should see me podrace." She's still shaking, though, and resting even more of her weight on Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shifts to a marginally more comfortable position as best she can without disturbing things.

"I wasn't aware humans competed in that particular sport."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you think Lily figured out I was Force sensitive?" Another weak giggle. (And - they should be able to sit down safely, actually... Anakin would kind of like to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They certainly can.

"Did you race for her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes a bit quiet.

"No. I raced for Gardulla the Hutt."

"But I helped Padme when she and Lily landed on Tatooine, and they both promised to free me, and - then they saw me racing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have never liked the Hutts. It is good you got out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is." Shiver. "It's - I don't like thinking about having ever been Gardulla's slave, though. It sucked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's talk about something else, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod and cuddle.

"...You're a really good shot," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. I think that was the first time I have ever shot at a living person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Impressive."

"Do you practice a lot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Several times a month, since I joined the Senate. It was the recommendation of my head of security. I will have to see about giving him a bonus, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Being able to fight's good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"However distasteful the necessity. Alderaan is traditionally pacifist."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"War and violence are bad, but - if it's happening, it's good to be able to defend yourself." Then, quietly: "And do so well enough you don't have to kill anyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"That would be ideal."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. (Elesse gives very good hugs, too.)

"People should just - cut it out. Stop attacking others over - stupid shit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that were possible, I would be entirely out of a job."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmrph.

"Doesn't mean we shouldn't - work towards people stopping. Even if we can't get all the way there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would, to be clear, appreciate the chance at early retirement."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "You'd deserve it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Finally get a chance to work on my librarian skills."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you'd be really awesome at that. Your memory's super good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Memory submits to training, much like your muscles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you've gotten some of the skill development done already, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A headstart on my competition."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Give you enough extra time to travel and look for books."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or indulge in additional hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take a vacation somewhere nice and politically unimportant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe find a new mountain range to hike."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll need to invite me if you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be my pleasure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Maybe I can suggest some places, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I welcome your expertise."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snug! "There's lots that goes into a good hike."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do tell," Elesse chuckles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Beautiful scenery... Good temperatures, and the right amount of challenge... Somewhere nice and remote, where it feels like you're the only person in the world... Interesting and new things along the route, too, and good places to camp..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums agreement, her hands beginning to massage slow circles on Anakin's back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shivers and relaxes into Elesse. "But crossing near towns - small ones - every now and then is good," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To restock on supplies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And to see something else new - like museums."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In a small town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes! That artsy trail I mentioned earlier was between mostly smaller towns, with small museums... Though it wasn't as remote as some trails."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Clearly I have much more yet to learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be happy to teach you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Anakin."

"Assuming, of course, that we escape this collapse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will."

"Lily knows where we are, and - once I'm calmer, I can start moving the stones on the outer layer away..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is very good to hear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snug, and deep breaths.

"I'm - a lot calmer than I was..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If help is coming from outside, then there is no need to push yourself. We seem to be quite safe for the moment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Well, no one's going to shoot us in here... But I'd be worried about further destabilization, if there's other explosions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A fair point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should at least expand my awareness of what's going on..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I do anything to help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should meditate."

"Just - keep holding me, I guess? And don't - move or make a lot of noise while I'm meditating?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that."

She shifts a little to make sure she's comfortable.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shifts, too, straightening her back and settling into a more comfortable position. Her breaths even out, her emotions calm even farther - turn into a warm, pleasant haze - and she stretches her awareness out, evaluating the area around them, the movement of minds, whatever danger she can sense from the future (when she's focused like this - Anakin is very good at precognition), where Lily is and what she's doing...

Permalink Mark Unread

There's no one in the immediate area, and it seems like the fighting is dying down everywhere. She feels Lily next to a clump of simmeringly-hostile presences, likely the ringleaders of the attack.

There's one piece of rubble that's going to start slipping some time in the next five minutes, and two more that will tip over because of footstep vibrations when Lily comes to get them...

And, faintly, almost missable even by her, a strange tingling around Elesse. A potentiality draped over her like mist, ever-so-lightly darkening her destiny, hinting at a danger to come. (A shatterpoint yet to form, if such a thing were possible.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...Huh.

She mentally notes the not quite shatterpoint, but sets aside the urge to poke it in favor of gently reaching out to resettle the loose rubble. This creates some soft noises audible from inside their bubble, but she doesn't drop anything or mess up, so.

(She finishes, and very gently pokes at the potential danger around Elesse, trying to explore it more.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It vanishes under her scrutiny, like fog in the morning sun.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Probably very far off then... But it's interesting.)

She comes up out of her meditation, shifting and snuggling into Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you find success?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I was able to stabilize more of the rubble, and..." She summaries what she sensed elsewhere in the facility. (She doesn't mention the weird feeling around Elesse, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds as though things are turning out well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Though everyone's still pretty busy, and we're not injured or in immediate danger, so we might be here a while if I don't dig us out..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts rubbing Anakin's back again.

"If you feel up to it, Anakin. Though I do feel quite safe with you here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny blush. (Fortunately Elesse probably can't see it, because it's very dark.) (It does not occur to Anakin that Elesse might be able to pick up on Blush Feelings in the Force.)

"I'd feel up to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Little squeeze.

"Very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shiver! (...Anakin does not want to move. But it would be so embarrassing if her teacher had to rescue her because she was too busy cuddling the Senator.)

She leans into Elesse and starts carefully removing rubble from around them - there's a lot, a good bit more than one floor of debris' worth, enough it's actually pretty impressive she'd gotten the pile as stable as she did that quickly. So with her current ability to multitask and the fact she and someone she's protecting are under the rubble, they'll still be under here for a while... (Anakin had gotten 'size matters not' down pat very quickly. That doesn't make 'hundreds of varyingly small pieces of broken rubble' any easier, especially when she's also trying to prevent clouds of dusted rubble from entering their air pocket.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(If it were her, she would simply blast her way out. But Anakin's method is impressive in a different way- incredibly fine control and situational awareness, not to mention the endurance needed.)

Elesse stays still and tries not to disturb her work.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Anakin's under the impression she's currently snuggling a squishy non-Force user, so that's probably influencing her approach a lot.)

A good bit more than one floor's worth of debris had collapsed on them, and it had come straight down rather than spreading out, so there's enough she does need to take a few breaks. She's working fast, though - obviously not as quickly as blasting their way out, but still quickly enough she'll be done well before any emergency services reach them.

(Cuddling Elesse is very good for her brain's ability to recover during her breaks.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(An excellent beginning.)

Elesse murmurs quiet encouragement while Anakin rests.

Permalink Mark Unread

(More blush.)

The encouragement works, getting her back on task even faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then perhaps they won't be stuck too long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps not.

Anakin does, in fact, get the rubble off them decently quickly - though there's still a deep pile of uneven rubble on the floor the hallway.

She can keep clearing that, though it'll take longer, or - Anakin could just navigate that, if Elesse doesn't mind being carried?

Permalink Mark Unread

If Anakin can manage it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Show me, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stands and offers Elesse a hand to get to her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it, standing.

Permalink Mark Unread

And: scoop! Into a bridal carry.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodness," she remarks. "You are rather strong." Elesse fills Anakin's arms rather nicely. She hooks her arm around the back of Anakin's neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "The Force helps, and I like working out," she says as she plans her path and tests how Elesse's settled - and then she's off, jumping quickly between several perfectly stable points until they're clear of the long stretch of debris.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she put Elesse down at that point?

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoulder pat. "Thank you, Anakin. That was much easier than trying to make my own way across."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! And a light blush, actually visible this time.

"You're welcome, Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.

"Which way to the others?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum and focus, then she outlines their path - she'd jumped out of the rubble in the direction they needed to go anyways.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onward, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

By the time they meet up with Lily and the other survivors, a picture of the situation has developed. It appears the attackers were a splinter faction of hardline Kersans, unsatisfied with the outcome of the war and the likely direction of the peace talks. The explosions were modified droids, smuggled in to the conference as suicide bombers.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Ugh.

She's able to help with any ongoing rescue efforts now, at least...

Permalink Mark Unread

There are lots of those.

And meanwhile Elesse needs to redo almost all of her wrangling to try to salvage the peace talks here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Master Palpatine had gotten a good start on it, at least - and she's throwing herself far more intensely into the negotiations. (This involves a good bit of observing the Force, looking for shatterpoints...)

Between the two of them, they're able to get decent progress - even flip it into a harder call for peace.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's difficult, and no one is entirely happy with the compromise finally agreed on. But they can leave with fair confidence there is not another war imminent.

On the trip back, Elesse gives Anakin her personal comm code.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins, brightly, and gives Elesse hers in turn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will keep it close," she promises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep yours, too."

"Comm me whenever, okay? Even if you don't - need help with something. I liked talking to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, Anakin. I enjoyed our conversation as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head, grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Tiny blush.)

She keeps seeking out Elesse the rest of the trip back, of course - not constantly, but she's definitely enjoying the older woman's company a distracting amount.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is more than happy to indulge her in this whim. They can have many more conversations and simple quiet times together before Senator Vendar must bid her Jedi escorts farewell at the journey's end.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin manages appropriate restraint for the public part of the farewell (the less public part involves an exuberant hug).

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse returns the hug with feeling.

Later that evening, she sends Anakin a link to a collection of cute ferocious tooka-kitten pictures.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwww!!!!!! They're adorable.

Permalink Mark Unread
I was unaccountably reminded of you.
Permalink Mark Unread

:P

I've befriended a lot of the Temple cats, and they're pretty awesome. So, I'll take that as a compliment.

Permalink Mark Unread
Excellent. Take care in your studies and future missions, Anakin.
Permalink Mark Unread

I will! Good luck with Senate stuff!

Permalink Mark Unread
Thank you.

Over the next few weeks, Elesse keeps up her intermittent correspondence with Anakin, sending her amusing cat holos, comments on this or that piece of legislation or news items, remarks about her mundane life...
Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin keeps up her end - sends Elesse pictures of the Temple cats (including one that decided to have kittens under her bed), her opinions on legislation and news (which grow increasingly more sophisticated), gossip about her friends, chatter about what she's studying or doing... A reminder to Elesse to keep up with her blaster practice, comments about how well Anakin's been doing with her own weapons training...

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps they could get together to practice their weapons sometime?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd love that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse gives her the time of her next appointment at the range, and its location.

Permalink Mark Unread

I'll be there.

Permalink Mark Unread
Excellent. I look forward to seeing you again.
Permalink Mark Unread

She's a bit early, even, when the time rolls around. She seems excited.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is dressed more casually than Anakin's seen before, her hair up in an informal bun.

"Hello, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Elesse." She's less polished - her hair's in a sloppy ponytail, nothing as proper as it had been during the negotiations, and she has several colorful bracelets on. "You look - good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even for exercise, I must maintain certain standards. My maids almost riot for this outfit as it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Do they insist you dress properly even when hiking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They would if I took them along. Which is why I do not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very sensible of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have my moments," she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"An awful lot of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does seem so. Let us see if I will have any more today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try to have a few of my own, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope that you do, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then on to the day's shooting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where it turns out that Anakin is a very good shot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is sure to compliment her on this.

"You are better than I, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at fighting." Grin. "You're keeping up really well, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is quite a comfort for these old and creaky bones, to be told by someone almost a third my age that I am keeping up well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good!" Impish smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Impudent youngster," she laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute.

"Maybe you can give me some tips on my form?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

She demonstrates her stance for Anakin's critique.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's got a few minor tweaks - showing a very keen eye, and a good ability to explain how to move, how to focus, and a good ability to identify what others are doing and how they could do better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse puts her tweaks into practice, and demonstrates a better grouping on her next round of shots.

"You are a good teacher, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes. "Thanks! I've only gotten a chance to teach little kids before... But teaching's really fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be happy to learn from you any time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny wiggle and more blush. "I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shall have to find what other areas you excel in that make good activities, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shouldn't be too hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are a very talented young woman, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am," she says with a laugh. "And there's many fields I excel in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As expected of a Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was super talented even before the Jedi found me - but they've definitely helped me grow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you have gained a centimeter or so since last I saw you..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "I don't need help getting taller."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are feeding you well, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I really like the variety of food they've got... There's always something new, and eating in the cafeteria's fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is something of a gourmet herself, and draws Anakin into a conversation about their favorite foods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her conclusive favorite seems to be 'something new and interesting.' But she's got a pretty big fondness for spicy foods, and lightly sweet or fruity stuff, and sour fruits...

Permalink Mark Unread

Helpful information for Elesse to select a restaurant for them to eat at after their training- if Anakin has the time?

Permalink Mark Unread

She does!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Elesse will treat her to a nice meal. Not too fancy, but good quality nonetheless.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be embarrassing to go somewhere fancy in her exercise clothes...

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to set up a separate appointment for visiting a high-class establishment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or get takeout from some yummy hole in the wall and have a nice picnic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you would prefer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can do a fancy dinner sometime? Especially if you really want to." She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do enjoy choosing occasions to dress up for, from time to time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dressing up is different from going somewhere fancy," she teases. "I can dress up and then go have fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would like to see that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your staff might get upset about respectability, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And your Jedi will not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The august reputation of the Jedi Temple can survive the occasional joy ride."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Joy riding? Really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yoda came to get me last time I went street racing, so I need to get my kicks elsewhere until the embarrassment from that dies down."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bright grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does sound like an interesting diversion. Perhaps you can teach me to race."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to."

Permalink Mark Unread

They can start making plans for that over food, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee!

Though if Elesse is concerned about her image, they might need to plan around that...

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to come up with a suitable alibi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Learning to race is really best done away from people, anyways, so they could do this on one of Elesse's vacations...

Permalink Mark Unread

"The current session of the Senate is ending next month. I was thinking of taking a few weeks to myself then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be finishing my current round of classes around then, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A fortuitous coincidence, that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of the missions padawans get sent on happen when the Senate is out of session; I bet it's at least a little intentional."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Give us new things to talk about when we reconvene?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "Lots of our missions also involve following Senators around when they're not in the Senate... And it's a good time for us to start longer missions the Senate's requested." Teasingly: "We have more of a grace period before the impatient comms start."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you do not mean to imply you find legal oversight imposing, young lady," Elesse says, mock-seriously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would never find appropriate legal oversight imposing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well parried."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's all that diplomatic training."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plus my natural talent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed, you are excessively charming."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle blush!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute girl.

Elesse chuckles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being clever with words is about more than just charm, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do find it charming, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being charming is due to being good at words, not the other way around, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose that is correct."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm right about a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another piece of your charm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, they will need to return to their respective duties.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tragically enough.

"Talk to you later?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

"See you, Elesse." And she's off.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Elesse returns to the business of her life. (Or lives, as it were.)

Permalink Mark Unread

At the end of the Senate's session, Darth Sidious is contacted by her master. Mostly a routine update, confirming the temperature of the Senate in regards to the upcoming war, but at the end- "And I understand you have been making... friends," he imbues the word with considerable disdain, "among the Jedi."

"Yes," she says. "one of the padawan learners. The girl is young, but powerful and... willing to be led, it seems."

"Be very careful," the shrouded figure warns her. "Your predecessor might have said much the same about you, at one point."

"I have no intention of repeating her mistake, master."

"See that you do not. For a thousand years, the rule of the Sith has been that there are always and only two: one master, one apprentice. You know this, and you know the wisdom of it. Two is stable, two provides continuity." He takes a deep breath, as self-satisfied as ever at the weight of history backing him up. "Our ultimate goal draws very close. I will tolerate no interruptions."

"I understand," Sidious responds. "This is a lever on the Jedi, nothing more."

"Good. Good." He nods, satisfied. "For the glory of the Sith." And then he cuts the connection.

"For the glory of the Sith," Sidious repeats into the dark, empty room. She spits on the floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has determined the dates and location she will be taking her vacation. Is Anakin free?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's made sure she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wonderful.

They'll be visiting scenic Chandrila for this trip, and Elesse has secured the use of an upcountry estate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice and remote?

Permalink Mark Unread

Positively isolated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Peaceful, then. And it'll be a good change from Coruscant.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is the hope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin needs some paperwork - including stuff like information on where they'll be for how long and emergency contact information to give to the Temple - but Anakin's overall ready to go very quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want to pilot the ship?

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely!

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse gladly surrenders the helm. It's a fancy pleasure yacht- not the most high-performing, but crafted well enough not to be dangerously lumbering to handle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has Elesse considered all the upgrades a creative, skilled mechanic could make to this, given enough free time?

Permalink Mark Unread

Should she have?

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely!

Permalink Mark Unread

If only she knew a creative, skilled mechanic with a significant amount of free time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps she does, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh?

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is pretty creative, and knows more than a little mechanics, and has all this vacation time...

Permalink Mark Unread

How convenient for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's happy to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

It can be something to do in between the racing lessons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's going to keep her busy this vacation.

Permalink Mark Unread

It will keep her out of trouble, she's hoping.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin? Get in trouble? Never.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh-huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't believe me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you are aware that at least some of your mission record is public information, Padawan Skywalker."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That definitely doesn't count as 'trouble.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose you did at least accomplish your objective on Duros. Eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out. "That doesn't count."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's lips quirk upwards. "Does it not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is no arguing with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another important rhetorical strategy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When one has the standing to pull it off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm stubborn enough to make it through anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem the sort to drag yourself through all kinds of obstacles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No matter what comes my way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing especially stressful on this vacation though, I hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's not jinx it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, they arrive at their destination, a modestly sprawling low house nestled between a lake and forested hills, fronted by broad grasslands. A reinforced landing pad is artfully concealed around the side, and provisions for their stay have been laid in already, with further deliveries arranged.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's beautiful," she says, staring in awe at the scenery.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was recommended to me by a friend. One with good taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely good taste," she says. "I'm always blown away by how much green there is in the galaxy..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, you come from a desert planet. I had forgotten."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"I'd been to other planets, but - they were Hutt space. Tatooine was better than nearly any of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This place is better than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

"Mountain lakes are my favorite nature thing so far, they're always really cool. Though oceans aren't far behind..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Next time we'll do a beachfront location. Can you swim?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The first thing I spent my freedom learning to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I packed swim clothes just in case for this trip."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully the lake is warm enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to do that first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"After getting my stuff settled in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There should be three or four bedrooms, pick whichever you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!"

She's going to pick one with a view of the lake, naturally. And lots of windows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will take the room on the other side of the hall.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a neat room too. (Though Anakin likes hers better. It has an enormous soft bed and pretty walls and pretty art...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin will blend right in, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Little blush. "Dunno," she says. "I'm pretty remarkable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try not to lose track of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll hold you to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Good. I would not wish to need to tell the Jedi I lost you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lily might not be too surprised."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will let you get changed for the lake, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll be out in a few minutes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will get towels and a blanket, a book for her to read, and start putting together a little picnic basket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin comes out within about ten minutes, having changed into a red one piece bathing suit. She's bouncing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that looks cute," she compliments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," she says. "It's comfortable, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ready to visit the lake?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" Bounce bounce.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a path running down to a small sandy beach, with a boathouse and a wooden dock leading a little ways out into the water.

Permalink Mark Unread

She runs down to dip her toes in the water, test the temperature.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not quite warm, the local season is late-spring-verging-on-summer, but she should be okay to splash around a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then.

Anakin wades out into the lake until she's at a good depth to swim a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse sets up the blanket on the shore, waving to Anakin if she looks back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does! She waves, too.

"You don't want to swim?" she calls.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps another day. When you tell me how cold the water is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's only a little cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you say now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's enjoyable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will judge by the temperature of your skin when you get out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "Then you'll miss all the fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll lure you in eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think of it as an opportunity to practice your charm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Going to increase the challenges I'm facing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse takes her book out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Challenge accepted.

She swims over to the dock to see how deep the water is around it, then pulls herself out, stretches languidly - and sets off down the dock at a run, jumping an incredible distance to land far into the lake with a big splash and a loud laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse may or may not be peeking over the top of her book. Hard to tell from a distance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin has very good senses, fortunately, and more importantly a lot of faith in herself.

She swims back towards Elesse, laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely paying more attention to her book, yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pouts and splashes a little bit of water towards Elesse. Not in a way that risks damaging her book, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

It hits her foot.

"Oh, that is cold..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know about a full immersion..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe just dip in a little?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just a toe or two?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe even three."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm."

Elesse stands and walks over to the dock to sit on the side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin swims over to her and gently splashes her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lightly kicks some water back in Anakin's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! And more splash!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it going to be like that, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like what?" Tiny splash.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like a water fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not while I'm dressed, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't think to bring a swimsuit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is in the house. I did not anticipate that you would be so forceful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another small splash!

"Maybe you should change," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And admit defeat so easily? Never."

Permalink Mark Unread

She floats onto her back, looking up at Elesse. "You don't have a good perch for a water fight right now, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But a fine perch for retreating and denying you opportunity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Running away, you mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A strategic retreat to more favorable ground."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's only more favorable ground if you can still strike at me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or perhaps if I can change the methods of the battle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you change it to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm..." Elesse considers. "A speeder race."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd win."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I would be dry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But being wet's part of the fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

...It would be highly inappropriate for Elesse to laugh at that, even on a private vacation.

Anakin, being a Jedi, might still pick up on her amusement.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her a few moments to figure out why.

At which point she very blushes. "Not like that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Now she does laugh. "Of course not. Of course not, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sulky blush.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww.

Little splash?

Permalink Mark Unread

That breaks her out of it, and she splashes back. "I thought you wanted to avoid getting wet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only to excess."

Permalink Mark Unread

She dives briefly then surfaces with a laugh and a: "No such thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet I could convince you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"On the subject of water today, my position is quite firm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tomorrow will be a new day, with fresh opportunities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm going to have fun today, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope that you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Flick of water.

Permalink Mark Unread

Big splash!

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse twists out of the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows up nearly immediately, targeting where Elesse's moving to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh yes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is leaving the dock now, yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and swims a victory lap around the dock.

Permalink Mark Unread

Enjoy it while you can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You going to get your revenge?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait and see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Planning a later ambush?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feel free to so assume."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep my eyes open."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As if that will help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think you can get past a Jedi's senses?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse smirks. "One way to find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "You'll need it, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe the Force will decide to be with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and starts drying off.

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts swimming toward the shore.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately for her, Elesse did bring two towels.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very helpful!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you enjoy your first swim here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot!" She starts drying off. "It's a nice lake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Despite how cold it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The temperature's nice, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse reaches out to poke Anakin in the forehead, testing her temperature.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not as cold as one would naively expect, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. Promising. She doesn't actually want to swim in cold water.

Permalink Mark Unread

Innocent expression. "It's perfectly fine once you get used to it. Promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somehow I trust you less now that you are making that face."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a perfectly trustworthy face!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Context is everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A devastating retort. I am stunned absolutely speechless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speechless is a good look on you, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse grins. "You think I look good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Ah, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Anakin. I appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." She's still blushing, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute. (And according to plan.)

"Are you hungry? I brought some food out..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I worked up an appetite, yeah... Though maybe just light foods right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That is a fulfillable criterion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good!

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse spreads the various offerings out on the blanket, and begins constructing her cracker sandwiches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin starts sampling different fruits.

"Have you stayed here before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is the first time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's nice."

"And visiting new places is fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do enjoy that aspect of my job, when it comes up. And I imagine it does somewhat more frequently in yours, as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We're rarely at the same place twice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though returning somewhere familiar can be a welcome change, from time to time."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, a soft fondness suffusing her emotions. "It is."

"I like traveling, but... I like going home, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is good to have a home, wherever one may find it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Though finding one can be hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem to have found your feet with the Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have, yeah, though..." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though?" Elesse asks curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's hard to articulate even in my own head? But - the Jedi as a whole are... Home in the way a city or a people are? And Lily and Mace are my family, and I have my friends, but..." She seems to be struggling. "I - keep feeling like I want more but also like I... Want something... I don't know, smaller? Too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something that is just for you?" she suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe? Something that's - mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can understand that impulse."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"Do you have something like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone, rather."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh." No she's not disappointed about that, being disappointed about Elesse having someone who's hers would be very silly. "Who are they?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A private person, who I met... some years ago, now. They prefer not to be involved in my Senatorial life, and we do not meet nearly often enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw. That's sad..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Still, home is where you find it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is. But you should be able to go home as often as you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have occasionally considered it might be best to maintain multiple homes, for... ease of access."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something in every port?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My standards are a little too discerning to effectively permit that particular arrangement."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But not too discerning for more than one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That remains to be seen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should have as many homes as you want, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thoroughly agree."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

"It sounds very nice..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thinking of starting a collection of your own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Well, I don't have even one, yet..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are intelligent, young, pretty... I am sure you will pick up suitable candidates in no time, once you begin looking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Even more blush!

"Lots of my friends were already looking at my age... Though now they're all acting like I'm an innocent baby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Time can play funny tricks with perspective, as the mind ages."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try that one on Djedzu," she says, giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me know if it works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on what you mean by 'works.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If your goals are accomplished. Whatever those may be in regards to Djedzu."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Probably it'll just get zem to act all outraged, and being a brat is my main goal. Though getting zem to stop treating me like a little kid would be a good stretch goal..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you may need to adjust your tactics. Little kids are notoriously brattish. Or escalate quite a bit further."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Djedzu's a brat." She laughs. "But I suppose I can rise above. Act more mature than zem."

Then, with a blushing giggle: "Or just escalate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never underestimate the value of a sharp escalation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shock zem out of seeing me like a kid?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle blush. "I wouldn't actually know a lot about how to do that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is an opportunity for learning, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I might practice on a more forgiving target first..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just be sure not to give the surprise away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone who won't tell Djedzu, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll think about who I know that fits the bill..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be sure they are trustworthy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'll be the easiest criteria."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What others do you have in mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly just - won't make fun of me, isn't someone Djedzu will bother with questions, is someone I want to see me as - an adult there... And not like, just see me as able to handle responsibilities, but..." Awkward shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse smiles. "Good luck in your selection process."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little.

"Anyways... What else is there to do around here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite a bit."

There are trails up into the hills and tracks out across the grasslands. There's a boat for the lake and a speeder and speeder bikes for ground travel. The house is equipped with a fully functional entertainment system and hologame boards. And of course, Elesse's ship parked conveniently nearby if Anakin is overwhelmed by the urge to tinker.

Permalink Mark Unread

Plenty of fun, then. She's looking forward to all of it. (Though she's getting a bit tired and hungry for dinner right now...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse can pull some food together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good!

Anakin thinks she wants to cook while she's here, too, at least a few times.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse would appreciate that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Anakin really likes cooking for people.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is looking forward to seeing if Anakin maintains her standard of excellence in that arena.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Tiny blush.)

She will!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though it's Elesse's turn to feed them tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread

She had better get to work, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin will be waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take her too long to put together, a local vegetable medley dish, generously spiced, over a bed of fried grains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It looks good," she says, admiring the food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am hoping it tastes good as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's see." Food! And appreciative noises.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good. She likes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does! "You're a pretty good cook yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Anakin."

"Now you know where the bar you have to clear is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having a clear goal is good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee. "Thanks."

She stretches a little. "What were you thinking about doing for the evening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is some reading I have been meaning to catch up on..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

A quiet evening it is, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin has her own reading to curl up with - on a very cozy couch. (This is nice, in a different way from joking around together.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Very much so. (Surprisingly... peaceful. Comfortable.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's radiating a lot of that contentment into the Force, a warm blaze of comfort and joy. (She's a massive weight in the Force; it's somehow more obvious now, when she's not even trying to do anything - when she's just living happily in the moment.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(She needs this girl.)

After a few hours, Elesse will turn in for the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodnight, Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleep well." And she heads to bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does Elesse.

Anakin will almost certainly be the first one awake in the morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's sitting on the floor of the main living room when Elesse emerges, with the board games spread around her in half-open boxes, one of the more colorful instruction manuals open in front of her. She's humming something cheerful, apparently not paying attention to her surroundings.

(Something feels... Different about her, in the Force. She's muted, like a veil's been drawn around her - not dark, really, but she doesn't feel like the same blazing beacon of light.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse pauses a moment to watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reads pretty quickly, and then goes to play around with the pieces some, investigating them and sorting them into two piles, switching to a more considering hummed tune.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans on the doorframe, continuing to observe.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Also newly in the room: a comforter she dragged from her bed, piled on the couch like she had been nested in it earlier, and a stuffed tooka-cat toy leaning against the couch's arm.)

She looks up eventually. "Morning," she says, a bit awkwardly, then smiles. "There's a lot of cool games here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. Are you working out how to combine all their rulesets?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "I hadn't been."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It could be a fun project."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worth trying!" she says, brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse laughs. "Have you eaten breakfast yet, Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "Nope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall I make us some?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" She sets what she's working on aside and bounces to her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

To the kitchen, then. Elesse is thinking... pancakes.

Permalink Mark Unread

With fruit and syrup?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect!

She can help, too, if Elesse wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

She would certainly appreciate the assistance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good! (Tiny bounce.)

To pancakes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Teamwork pancakes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

She makes her pancakes in fun shapes, and then loads hers up with a pretty wide variety of fruit and a little bit of honey on top. She hums as she cooks, too, moving with that same energy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem a little different today, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Tiny flicker of wariness.)

"Huh? How so?"

(She also seems like a worse liar today.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"More... energetic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Sometimes I am..." Tiny squirm.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not mind it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The vacation must be agreeing with you already."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "It's fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am glad you think so. That is after all, the point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you like to do today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Play!"

Permalink Mark Unread

(Definitely significantly more childish today. She wonders what the cause is.)

Elesse laughs. "With what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The games in the living room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will have to show me what you have come up with so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" To the living room, then - she hasn't actually combined any of the rulesets yet, but she has some ideas for ways to experiment with that...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is happy to help her test things out. She has a knack for finding and exploiting corner cases.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect!

She takes scribbled notes on the more enjoyable results.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sometimes one has to break what they have to get to something better.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a flash of vicious glee on her face and in the Force (one entirely and almost jarringly unlike her emotions before today, especially in response to a philosophical idea like that).

"Or to figure out how it works."

Permalink Mark Unread

(...A promising break.)

"Or to figure out how it works."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "And some things are fun to break just 'cause," she says, teasingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As a responsible public servant, I could never endorse such a thing," she says.

"Though..." cocking a brow, "I suppose I am on vacation presently."

Permalink Mark Unread

More giggles! "And you didn't bring your maids."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is no one here but us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm not going to tell anyone if you break things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will trust you to keep any secrets that may reveal themselves then, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

(...Nnnn she wants to promise but she can't. It's very unfair, being unable to promise things.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not, of course, that I expect many to come up in our deconstruction of these games."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be weird if they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Art imitates life, as they say."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Only because living people are making the art."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is the alternative?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hum. "Some animals can make art?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alive animals, one hopes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As far as I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then that does not exactly disprove the thesis."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"Perhaps you might show me how one deconstructs other things. One of the speeders, perhaps, in advance of teaching me to race."

Permalink Mark Unread

(...Mrrr.)

Shrug. "This is more fun." A pause, then: "Right now. I could do that tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Tomorrow, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tomorrow."

For now... More games?

Permalink Mark Unread

If that's what Anakin wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Games it is then. At least until lunch time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which Anakin said she'd cook yesterday, didn't she...

Permalink Mark Unread

Or something like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Brief moment of uncertainty.)

Something like that, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

What would she like to make?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hm.

Is Elesse in the mood for anything?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hot sandwiches would be nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does this place have a panini press?

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse believes she saw something of that nature...

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool!

Apple-mustard-cheddar paninis it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

An interesting combination. Elesse looks forward to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good, she promises - especially with a spicy mustard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

She puts it together pretty quickly, selecting a more tart apple and some definitely very spicy mustard. (It's more savory than the stuff Elesse's seen her favoring lately, but still really, really good.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is sure to compliment her on the taste.

Permalink Mark Unread

(She doesn't seem nearly as embarrassed by this as she would have yesterday. Possibly not at all embarrassed, actually.)

"Thanks! I like paninis a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be more than happy to try any other recipes you have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another person to experiment on, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A pleasure to meet you. I am Elesse Vendar, Senator for Alderaan and Test Subject for Anakin's Paninis."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wild giggling!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make good use of me, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will. It'll be fun!"

(The double entendre seems to be flying unusually far over her head, actually. Yesterday she would've been beet red.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not doubt it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "I'll make another one for dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. What would you like to do until then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She rocks back and forth a little, humming and thinking. "I picked games this morning... So it's your turn to pick!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would like to explore the hills a little, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bounce! "Exploring's fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Best get your walking shoes on, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" Off to do that!

Permalink Mark Unread

And water bottles for the pair of them, then off to the trails.

It's certainly more wild than anywhere on Coruscant, but it's obviously not untouched land. The underbrush is cleared back and the trail is well-marked.

Permalink Mark Unread

She runs around, investigating the plants and shiny rocks and colorful insects...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse walks along more sedately, appreciating the scenery and the natural calmness and any of the interesting rocks or bugs Anakin shares.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a lot of cool rocks and bugs! She doesn't keep or hurt any bugs or anything, but she does start up a small collection of the coolest rocks.

Permalink Mark Unread

A souvenir collection.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though she's probably going to have to condense her collection down a bit...

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she not just float the collection along with the Force?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, but storing it once she leaves the vacation is a bigger issue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps she could just take holos, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd miss the point, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could rent a safe deposit box, or agitate for a larger apartment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having them around me is nice, though... And a larger apartment to store more stuff doesn't seem very Jedi-ish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! (And a flicker of mischief through her emotions.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which are your very favorites, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts sorting them! Picking just one favorite is hard, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can have multiple favorites.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah... But narrowing them down at all is still hard. She can sort them into categories and narrow down that way maybe, pick the best in each category...

Permalink Mark Unread

Grade them on a set of axes- color, shape, and weight?

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly a bit too organized for her. She can put them in a line up based on shinyness or similar, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's advice could help here, too...

Permalink Mark Unread

If she's sure. They are Anakin's rocks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have to listen if I don't wanna."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should have expected that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a very obvious thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For a certain type of person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you just need to get to know me better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think this vacation is for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "It doesn't have other reasons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is very rare that I do a thing for only one reason, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pout. "What are your other reasons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To begin with, I also needed time away from responsibility."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am positively full of those."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "I've noticed!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you have been paying attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Elesse will offer her shiny rock opinions, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her sorting can proceed pretty quickly, then. (Though she still doesn't condense the collection down that far.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a start.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can keep them at the vacation house for a few days, at least. Give herself more time to think.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mull the decision over. Acquire further competitors for her interest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Let some of the psychological shininess fade.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is important to consider these big decisions calmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggles!

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

It's about time they should think about turning back.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Elesse's getting tired...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's her old woman knees, you see.

Permalink Mark Unread

Terrible! She'll be nice to Elesse's old knees, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very kind of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's me. Super kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The kindest, cleverest Jedi I have ever met."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs (though there's an odd little twist to her emotions).

Permalink Mark Unread

(Hm. She somewhat thought so.)

"And an exceptionally talented and creative young woman besides."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. (Her feelings about that compliment are still somewhat weird, actually, though they're at least more unambiguously positive.) And then, after a moment's thought: "Are there non-Jedi you've met who're kinder and cleverer than me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. I might have to think about that one. I have met far more non-Jedi than Jedi, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you'll realize I'm the best really quick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems practically certain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're really smart yourself, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why, thank you, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "It's only the truth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All the best compliments are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

They get back to the house a little before dinnertime.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's turn to cook again?

Permalink Mark Unread

If she would like to, certainly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah! She can make another panini!

Permalink Mark Unread

Or two of them, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

She won't make them share a single one, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse appreciates that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm... She's thinking something based either around peppers or pesto...

Permalink Mark Unread

Peppers would be good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Spicy-sweet pepper panini it is, then!

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her cooking is perfect, she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has yet to find a flaw.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Of course, dinner doesn't last forever, and they ate pretty late - but there's time to sit in the living room again, and read or hang out or play more games, before bedtime.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse would like to spend some time reading again, if Anakin can entertain herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably. (She brought some fun books, after all.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Elesse takes one end of the couch. (Plenty of room for Anakin, if she wants.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She sprawls out on it with her head on a cushion next to Elesse's thigh, legs up on the armrest.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Wonderful.)

Another quiet night until bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

A very nice night.

She goes to bed pretty late, but she does eventually, especially once Elesse heads to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is interested to see which Anakin will greet her the next morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

The calmer one, it seems. Though she also looks somewhat tired when Elesse finds her in the breakfast room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning, Anakin. Did you sleep well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning Elesse." Small smile. "And yeah, pretty well. What about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well enough."

"You look a little tired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little bit..." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you feeling well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Yeah. I just used up a lot of energy yesterday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. What would you have on the agenda for today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hum.

"Hiking would be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An early start means we can plan a longer excursion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Go explore pretty far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shall need to pack a lunch, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fruit would be good for that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Any other requests?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm probably going to want something with protein, too... Those honeyed nuts, maybe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse nods.

And they'll need some breakfast, to start the day right...

Permalink Mark Unread

Whose turn is it to cook?

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems like Elesse's.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool." Grin!

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do muffins sound?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent, especially with berries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Entirely doable." She will begin mixing up the batter, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches with a fond smile. "Do you bake a lot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dabble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cooking's fun. Though I'm not as good at baking yet as I'd like..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The best way to learn is to practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can get some of that here. Lots of free time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to help me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." She stands and comes over. "What do you want me to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Put those Jedi muscles to use and help with the mixing..."

Elesse can give Anakin directions and explain her process as they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

She listens closely, and works quickly and efficiently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good traits for an assistant to have.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle (and small blush). "I like being helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you seem to be in the right line of work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Being a Jedi is - really good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am glad you find it rewarding in that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good the Jedi exist even beyond feeling rewarding, but - yeah, it's not something people should do if they don't enjoy it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Much like the legislature, I sometimes think."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Definitely, yeah." Then, teasingly: "Though I think some legislators could stand to enjoy the job more and the perks less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you are saying that I should not have invited you this week..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "This isn't the objectionable sort of perk, don't worry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you take your job seriously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is not necessarily the same thing as enjoying it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "It means you're a good Senator, though."

"But, yeah, you should get to enjoy your job, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I do, most of the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Good."

"Unfortunately even being a Jedi isn't always enjoyable..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some parts that - honestly shouldn't be enjoyable."

"But it's fulfilling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Food for the spirit." The oven timer dings. "As muffins are food for the body," she says, going to pull said muffins out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Both are good together."

Muffins!! Small excited noise as she examines them. "And these look good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Due to your able assistance, I am sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle blush! "And your competent leadership."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A team effort, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The best way to do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

So breakfast, then they can make ready to head out?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Anakin packs way more efficiently and thoughtfully than she did the day before, and she's ready to go quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the trails.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where would Elesse suggest going first?

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse would like to revisit yesterday's route, there's a vista she wants another look at.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her a few moments, then - "Alright. Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has fun hiking, examining the plants and rocks and the birds some, but mostly focusing on talking to Elesse or simply walking in a warm, contented silence.

She does stop occasionally - when she spots an interesting bird near them, or sees a particularly pretty flower, or doesn't recognize a species, or sees something else interesting. (And one of those is one of the rocks she discarded yesterday, actually, for being insufficiently pink.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Giving that one another look?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We decided not to bring that one back, yesterday."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pause.

"Oh, yeah. I forgot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are self-consistent, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Well, I'm at least sometimes that..." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and sets the rock back down. "Let's keep moving."

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards.

By lunchtime, they've gotten further than Elesse and (the other) Anakin did yesterday.

Permalink Mark Unread

(She doesn't comment on or seem to really react to the distance.)

Do they want to keep pushing until they find that view Elesse wanted to see? Anakin's not very hungry yet, and that might be a good place for a picnic.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right. It should be just a few more bends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards, then!

Permalink Mark Unread

They come to a sharp drop-off, affording a view of the tree-covered lower hills and the lake glinting with sunlight in the distance.

"This is the place," Elesse says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She stares around. "Oh," she says. "It's really beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worth the walk," she smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely."

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for sharing this with me, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head, blushing. "It's my pleasure, Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall we sit down and eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." She sits down beside Elesse, nearly touching her, and starts unpacking their lunches (which she'd insisted on being the one to carry).

Permalink Mark Unread

Being so close, it's practically unavoidable that there are brief touches over the course of eating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely, especially while Anakin is handing Elesse her food, or offering her a new drink...

Permalink Mark Unread

Most attentive of her. Very... helpful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!!

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Still blush. "Helping you is nice..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do it well. I believe you might have things to teach some of my entourage."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no now she's blushing even more.

"I'd be happy to help if you wanted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Careful, I may take you up on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I'd ever mind helping you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse smiles back, and moves the conversation on to lighter topics.

She also spies a shortcut back from this vantage point, so they can linger if they wish.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin would love that, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is a nice view.

Permalink Mark Unread

And nice company.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of the best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after a relaxing meal, back to the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

They still have plenty of daylight, too... Anakin wants to spend it practicing her saber forms, though. Her friends would make fun of her if she went soft.

Permalink Mark Unread

Out on the patio, perhaps? And Elesse would like to watch, if Anakin doesn't mind. She's been developing an interest in Jedi martial arts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin doesn't mind at all! And teaching is good for learning - she can explain things she's doing, definitely.

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be greatly appreciated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny blush. "Let's go set up the patio then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse helps Anakin clear sufficient space, and reserves a chair off to the side for herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes sure Elesse has a good view - strips off her outer robe, leaving herself in a sleeveless tunic - and begins.

She's extremely good at her forms, especially for her age - and she seems to have a very solid grasp on most of them, even the ones she favors less.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse wouldn't consider herself an expert, but it does look impressive.

(Sidious does consider herself an expert, and the girl's skill is real.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug grin. "Thank you."

"I'm best at Niman, really - the Diplomat's Form, or Form Six - but Mace has been pretty successful at drilling Vaapad into my muscle memory - also called the Ferocity Form, or Form Seven, or the Way of the Vornskr."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very poetic names. I suppose I would have to learn Form Six as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush! "I'd love to teach you."

"It's most useful with the Force, but - it's really peaceful even just as a meditative exercise, and there's modifications that rely on the Force less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like fun." Elesse stands, discarding her jacket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "Fighting always is."

She starts explaining the form more in depth, and the prepwork needed to actually start learning it - she's progressing logically, actually, not jumping ahead just to show off. (Though she will absolutely show off if asked.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps she can show off while Elesse starts practicing the footwork.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Elesse thinks it wouldn't be distracting...

Permalink Mark Unread

She can handle it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright.

Anakin shows off then, happily rambling about the form and its philosophy and use and history - it's actually pretty common among the Jedi at a basic level, because it's easy to use - but it's very hard to master, demanding intense discipline, will, and self-knowledge from its practitioners...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will be in good company as a casual practitioner, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "One way to look at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One must try to stay positive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A valuable skill."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And one easier to practice than many others."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "A lot of people have trouble with it, anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a particular trick of the mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A strong will helps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Stubborn' is an adjective that has been applied to me on occasion."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Those are slightly different things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The difference," she says, "Lies in whether one is being wisely or foolishly strong willed. And you don't strike me as at all foolish."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug.

"Thank you, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Little blush. "It's only the truth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A potent weapon, when properly wielded."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Yeah. One of the most powerful there is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be sure to take care in its employ."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will. I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

Indulgent smile.

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head and blushes a little, giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Show me the next set of movements?" Elesse asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing."

And lesson!

Permalink Mark Unread

Mastery is not possible in a few hours, of course, but Elesse makes progress.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's an excellent student.

Permalink Mark Unread

One does one's best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's best is pretty impressive, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Anakin is just flattering her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's pretty sure complimenting Elesse manages all three of 'true, necessary, and kind.'

Permalink Mark Unread

It's in her own interests not to argue too hard, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good of her to see reason, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin has enlightened Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!!

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"Whose turn is it to make dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mine. You made breakfast, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you require any assistance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can handle it on my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cooking, then!

She sets out to make a - pretty complicated - pasta dish, with lots vegetables and a homemade cream sauce.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will freshen up briefly, then take a seat to read while waiting for Anakin to finish.

Permalink Mark Unread

The meal does take a while. Anakin serves Elesse - pours her drink, sets her placemat up, arranges her food - when it's done. (She seems to be mimicking the sort of service many high-class eateries have.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse puts on her restaurant manners for Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is the meal to your liking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite. My compliments to the chef."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush! "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sit down and join me, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

She brings her own food over and sits next to Elesse, nearly touching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she is conveniently positioned for Elesse to point out which pieces she found exceptionally tasty.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Tiny wiggle.)

The detailed feedback is very nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she's happy to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is a very good dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Squirm!)

"I think you're one of my favorite people to cook for," she says, teasingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyone who is not so appreciative is lying, either to themself or you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think a lot of people have just gotten used to my excellent cooking, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They should eat with more mindfulness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll tell the Jedi you said that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to expose a harsh truth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And a sense of perspective is good for growth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're good at that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It must be my political experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not a skill everyone with political experience develops, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I am simply uniquely excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That I'd believe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do strive for believability."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Honesty is more important than believability."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Politics, alas. Compromises must be made."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall I help you clean up the dishes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take care of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

And she cleans up.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then the usual after-dinner reading session?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse takes the couch, once again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin seems to hesitate about where to sit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pats the cushion beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy smile.

She sits where Elesse indicates, leaning against her slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

And reading time?

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

(If Anakin's not too distracted by the warmth of Elesse pressing on her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Only a little distracted...

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, it's not like there's going to be a reading quiz.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be sad to miss out, though. But reading slowly makes up for it, and - they're not in a rush, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

No deadline except their own tiredness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin can stay awake for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Elesse is enjoying this part.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's one of the best parts of the vacation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Certainly.

Though as all good things, this too eventually comes to an end.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have it again tomorrow, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed they will.

"Good night, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night, Elesse. I'll see you in the morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the morning."

And off to bed, until the next day?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

The girl who greets Elesse the next morning is the usual Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good morning to her, then.

It's shaping up to be a warm day, so Elesse is thinking- speeders in the morning and the lake after lunch?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooooo.

Permalink Mark Unread

So it's a plan, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah!

What's Elesse thinking with the speeders?

Permalink Mark Unread

She was thinking Anakin could show her how to race.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stretching the rules while we're out of the public eye, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only taking best advantage of the time and circumstances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very reasonable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

So breakfast, and then Anakin can show Elesse the art of going fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

And of having fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

That as well. Anakin's enthusiasm is infectious, and Elesse clearly enjoys herself.

After lunch, she disappears upstairs to change for the lake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin gets changed into the same swimsuit from last time - gets her things packed - and goes to wait on the back patio for Elesse to emerge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse comes out wearing a light robe, belted knotted around the waist and a pair of towels over her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Going to actually join me today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems like it will be warm enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hope so. It'd be sad if the water temperature drove you back out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would hate to disappoint you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're never disappointing."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Shall we, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!"

Down to the lake!!

Permalink Mark Unread

At the shore, Elesse will untie her robe and step out, revealing a a silky two-piece swimsuit in a dark green.

Permalink Mark Unread

And get herself a completely poleaxed (and blushing) Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is an excellent reaction to provoke.

She struts over to the end of the dock to jump in.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's still staring!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll make it a very smooth and graceful dive, making sure that she stretches herself out all the way for Anakin's viewing pleasure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah Anakin's brain is possibly just broken, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will take a few laps to give her time to reboot, before popping her head up.

"Coming?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Nnnnnn.)

"Ah, yeah!" she says, making her legs stiffen so she doesn't sway as she heads into the water.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute.

Elesse chuckles, and circles over to where Anakin is entering.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, shyly.

"I like your swimsuit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, I like it as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's pretty." (Blush!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie laughs, and splashes Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she's on.

Anakin starts splashing back, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a much more even fight than last time.

Permalink Mark Unread

One Anakin's still pretty determined to win -

Though. She does seem to be getting pretty distracted. Especially when Elesse moves particularly vigorously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't exactly ruthlessly take advantage of this, because that would tip her hand too much. But she doesn't not take any advantage.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is, actually, having a splash fight with a Jedi here, who pauses midway through the fight with a considering look on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse pauses as well.

"Something wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...She bites her lip.

"You're coming across like you're - flirting. Is that intentional?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"Would you prefer I change my behavior?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nnnnn! That implies it's on purpose. (Anakin thought so, but.)

"Uh," she says, blushing and staring at Elesse. Then, quietly: "No. I - you're - I like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

"You're pretty," she says, shyly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"Thank you, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She lowers her gaze, blushing quite a lot.

"I won't tell anyone about - your behavior," she offers. "Or - about anything else like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could get me in quite a lot of trouble, if you wished to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to get you in trouble, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

More blush!

"I like that you treat me like - I'm an adult. And you're - intelligent and funny and amazing. So I feel like I'm the fortunate one..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was hoping to have something like that effect."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!!!

"Oh," she says, gaze directed to her feet and face beet red.

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy grin!

"...Though - some days I act more childish. Maybe - don't flirt as much on those days? At least - right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can accommodate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

"You're nice, too, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For you, I try."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle blush!

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

...Splash.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and splashes back.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the game is on again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is, unfortunately for herself, more easily distracted than earlier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will be satisfied with a resounding victory.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin can't, actually, find it in herself to get upset about this.

Permalink Mark Unread

No hard feelings getting in the way of dinner, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

None at all.

She insists on cooking, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she insists, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a gentle insistence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gentle, yet firm.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Blush!)

If Elesse demands to cook, Anakin will let her... But Anakin really enjoys cooking for Elesse. (And - technically unsaid - right now she wants to dote on Elesse some.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Acceptable. Anakin can cook if she wishes to.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I look forward to whatever you have in store for me tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to impress."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Elesse can have a seat, then, while Anakin makes dinner for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes sure to take one with a view into the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Anakin isn't entirely sure why Elesse watching her cook sends a shiver up her spine.)

She goes pretty all out, even more than the day before - it does turn out she'd put various things on to slow cook or marinate that morning or the night before, but even beyond that she's adding in effort especially on presentation.

And she's very attentive to making sure Elesse doesn't want for anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

She could get used to this level of service.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it to Elesse's liking, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Very much so. Well done.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Anakin's happy to provide her with - excellent service like this. (Tiny blush.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will reciprocate with all the praise she deserves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, how is Anakin supposed to function like this. (Squirm.)

Permalink Mark Unread

With grace and poise, one hopes. Otherwise the flow of compliments may cut off.

It may be a self-correcting system in that way, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good practice for operating under pressure, perhaps. (Anakin corrects very quickly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed, everything is a lesson.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good way to look at life.

Permalink Mark Unread

It works for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

For Anakin, too.

Improving's important.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

She's made some food for herself, too, of course, but she waits for Elesse to try it and declare that she's satisfied with what's in front of her - that she doesn't need anything else - before Anakin will sit and eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps just a little more of the sauce...

Permalink Mark Unread

Right away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Anakin. You may eat, if you wish."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny blush.

"Alright." Food!

Permalink Mark Unread

Food! Anakin has done an exceptional job cooking, yet again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug smug smug.

Permalink Mark Unread

An entirely justifiable reaction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Anakin should eat too, of course. (Having meals with Elesse - especially when Anakin's cooked for her - is very nice. Anakin has a warm, glowy feeling at the thought of Elesse joining Anakin and Lily for all their meals together...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Food is better when shared.

Permalink Mark Unread

And with how good this food already is...

Permalink Mark Unread

It is elevated to lofty heights indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Then: "Do you want to read together again tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would like that very much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It's... Peaceful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is," she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin spends the rest of the meal very, very happy, focusing on light chatter (and shy glances at Elesse, and compliments...), and then cleans up once they're both done.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good and helpful girl.

Then to the couch?

Permalink Mark Unread

To the couch!

Though Anakin hesitates again before sitting down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is something wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes. "No..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to sit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and steps closer, hovering next to Elesse rather than sitting immediately.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Use your words please, Anakin. I am not a mind-reader."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrr.

"I was - thinking something over," she says, softly but firmly, and then sits beside Elesse - still not quite touching, though. No less distance than she's kept before.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough." Elesse accepts this. (Pushing too much will scare the prey away, and that is the last thing she wants.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins at Elesse a little.

Then: reading?

Permalink Mark Unread

Reading.

The last few days of the vacation follow much the same pattern as the previous ones. Elesse is only a little regretful when it comes time to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll keep in touch, though - and there'll be other vacations.

(Anakin's been opening up slightly more - definitely preening more openly, complimenting Elesse more - but she's clearly held herself back from pushing.)

(Elesse sees the 'other' Anakin for two of those days - she seems entirely unaware of the flirting that's been happening. She's more active, more assertive, chooses places she wants to see and demands Elesse take her there. She likes Elesse too, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse keeps up their text-based communication, sending Anakin this or that interesting picture or article with her commentary, inquiring about her studies, sharing some thoughts about daily life. (She's interested to see if there's a detectable difference between the Anakins in this medium.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The 'other' Anakin is in fact detectable - she's much less formal, quicker to respond, less clearly flirty but still inclined to compliment Elesse, far more blunt, more inclined to gossip, less concerned with current galactic events or justice or anything very Jedi-ish, but still very much interested in history and in topics that some might consider taboo...

Permalink Mark Unread

She can certainly have some interesting conversations with Elesse, though that tends to come up more during their occasional in-person meetings, when Elesse invites Anakin out to a lunch or a museum or a park.

Permalink Mark Unread

She usually sees the more typical Anakin for those - but the apparently younger one is appearing more and more often, especially as their conversations deepen.

(She never takes more than half the 'dates,' though Elesse can gradually start predicting and then nudging which Anakin shows up for some of the trips - especially things like museums and parks where the two's interests diverge.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Useful to know.)

Elesse enjoys spending time with both of the Anakins, in their different ways. (More, in fact, than she thought she would. Something that grows increasingly obvious as time passes. She needs to... consider.)

All too soon, the one year anniversary of Elesse and Anakin's meeting approaches. Elesse sends Anakin a whimsical birthday card for the occasion.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets a card in return, teasingly referring to an anniversary. It's handwritten and drawn, with two subtly distinct handwritings, each accompanied by an image in its own style, both showing different things from their vacation to the lake-house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww. That's so sweet. (It is. It is very sweet.)

Anakin hears less from Elesse in the runup to the Senate session ending, but she does invite her to another vacation retreat.

Permalink Mark Unread

I'd love to! Do you have a location already?

(Anakin has been getting on and off busy, too - she has missions, of course, sometimes rather long ones, sometimes ones she can't message Elesse while she's on. She has classes and exams. She tries to keep up her side of contact, though, no matter how hectic things get.)

Permalink Mark Unread
Alderaan.
Permalink Mark Unread

The immediate reply:

!!!

The follow up, nearly half an hour later:

I'd love to see your homeworld. When are you going?

Permalink Mark Unread
A week.
Permalink Mark Unread

Okay!

She has some follow up questions - if there's anything special she should pack, how long they'll be staying, exact details of the flight off Coruscant - but mostly she's just really eager for the week to finish up.

Permalink Mark Unread

It will be fairly similar to the last trip- though they'll be at higher altitude, in the local autumn, so she'd be well advised to pack warmly. (Though there will be an indoor pool.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She can do that.

And, a week later - Anakin arrives early the day they're scheduled to depart.

Permalink Mark Unread

That means she beats Elesse to the spaceport.

"Hello, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!!! "Hey, Elesse!"

(By the Force signature, this is the more mature, calmer, flirty Anakin. By the way she's just barely restraining herself from bouncing, she's excited enough that barely matters.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem excited. Are you ready to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely!" Tiny constrained wiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we had best waste no time."

To the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin wants to fly it, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is entirely free to do so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Her flying's gotten a bit smoother, more practiced than last time - she's always been great at it, of course, but she seems to be calming down a bit.

She has a lot of questions about where they're going on the flight and on how Elesse's been, lately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse gently deflects questions about her recent well-being, but is more than happy to share quite a number of anecdotes about her history as a child and young woman in the region they will be visiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin doesn't push (and even mostly successfully hides feeling pouty about not getting straight answers on how Elesse's doing - it wouldn't be noticeable to someone not Force sensitive, probably.)

She's fascinated by Elesse's history, though, and reciprocates with her own anecdotes, with more questions...

It's a pretty engaging way to pass the flight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed, the time passes swiftly.

They arrive at the estate in the late evening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin takes a look around, of course, but focuses on helping Elesse get settled before going off to explore.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a much more obvious distinction between the master bedroom and guest bedrooms in this house. Elesse takes the master for herself.

Other rooms of note in the house: a small library, a painting studio, a sunroom, both a formal and informal living room (the informal has a real fireplace), a hot tub, a basement swimming pool that seems more designed for exercise than recreation.

Permalink Mark Unread

All very excellent rooms. Anakin claims the bedroom nearest Elesse's, then investigates the library and painting studio before finding Elesse to ask if Anakin can use those two rooms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you solemnly promise to reshelf the books and not drip paint without putting a cloth down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then feel free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." Bright grin!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are welcome, Anakin. I believe I will be taking an early night, so make yourself comfortable and help yourself to whatever is in the kitchen if you get hungry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

"You don't want dinner, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not find myself hungry tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

"Okay. I can make breakfast tomorrow, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall look forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "Me, too - it's been a while since I've gotten to cook for you... I'll need to show off what I've learned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

Little blush.

"Sleep well, Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile.

And off to their separate evenings, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Until the morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's up pretty early the next morning - though she waits for Elesse to emerge to start cooking, and instead spends the time until then on the first set of her daily exercises and meditations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't keep her waiting too long.

"Good morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," she says, finishing her last stretch. "Did you sleep well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tolerably so. And yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Overall pretty well? I always sleep lightly my first night in a new bed, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is good to hear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

"I'll go get breakfast started."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my pleasure."

She seems determined to spoil Elesse again - but she's not as chatty as normal, an odd nervous energy pulling her into herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is as complimentary as she ever was.

"I thought we'd start with a walk today," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always a good start to the day," she says with a small smile. "Short or long?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not too long, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"...I have - something I'd like to talk to you about on the walk, if that's okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So long as you do not mind I have something to say as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "I don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

They should finish breakfast first, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's definitely gotten better at cooking since the lake house vacation.

She's in good - though nervous - spirits as they get ready for the walk, but seems to have trouble figuring out what to say, occasionally starting and stopping or stumbling over her words.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse draws them to a stop at a clearing a ways in.

"Perhaps I should go first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites her lip.

"...I don't want to feel - like I'm too scared or nervous to say this? And - I don't want to lose my nerve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it is that important to you... then I think I had better go first. What I have to say- it may affect your willingness to confide in me."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Very slow nod.

"Okay."

"Should we - sit down or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might be best."

She takes out a slim lacquered box from her bag and holds it out to Anakin. "I would like you to take this, though please do not open it yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits on a log and settles the box in her lap.

"Are you okay, Elesse?" she asks, brow furrowed a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is... difficult for me to say. When we met, I- it was happenstance. I did not know who my Jedi escorts would be on that trip. I did not know who you were, but I quickly determined that you were- valuable. That you were a relationship I should cultivate. And so that is what I began to do."

"After Chandrila, I began to realize that I was making a mistake. That you were not simply an asset, that you were a person. And that you were a person I cared about. Someone I could appreciate for more than what they do, more than their power, someone I could appreciate for who they are. Your wit, your curiosity, your drive, your energy... I like you, Anakin. And I did not expect to."

"Because of that... I owe you the truth, before we go farther. You deserve to make your own decisions, and all the information you need to do so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

That Elesse hadn't immediately liked her shouldn't hurt like this - most people don't love as quickly as Anakin does - but that some of their early relationship had been for an advantage -

Anakin acknowledges her hurt, faces her uncertainty and self doubt, her creeping dread of what could have happened if Anakin was more reckless with pursuing a relationship earlier, and acknowledges too that things have clearly changed -

And she sets them aside, straightening her back and releasing her worry and pain with every careful, meditative breath. (She refuses to let her doubts control her, here. They were threatening to win against her earlier, but...)

Anakin's mind calms.

(It's easier to be brave for other people.)

"Thank you," she says, sincerely, "For telling me this, and for - offering to disclose further."

"I care about you, too. And - I swear that whatever ultimate judgment I make, I won't make it in haste."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Thank you."

"But-"

"That is not all. You should open the box, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does so, looking down at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inside the box-

A slim metal cylinder, silvery, with intricately intertwined gold and black filigree. A curve in the profile to nestle into a palm, ribs to keep the grip from slipping.

It's very obviously a lightsaber.

And equally obviously, it is attuned to the dark side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath.

"Oh."

Deep breath.

She doesn't need to even ask. She - she can feel it.

"This is yours," she says, voice quiet, trying to acknowledge and sort her confused maelstrom of emotions (the dark side energy has brought her other half to where she's hovering just behind Anakin's eyes, having her own storm of emotions, which - is not helping. Anakin nudges that presence without her, a give me space, and receives a tiny sorry as her other half detangles a bit - but doesn't retreat, hovering just in case she needs to protect Anakin).

Deep breath.

"I'm still not making a judgment yet," she says, more firmly than she feels - but that proclamation brings its own strength, allows her to wrap her reactions up for later.

Deep breath.

"I - "

Deep breath.

"What did you want to say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am Darth Sidious, and I am a Sith Lord."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. Yeah.

Deep breath.

Anakin's having a lot of emotions. She doesn't know what they all are, which is... Making this harder. She acknowledges some of the bigger ones - shock, self-doubt, fear - and sets those aside.

Deep breath.

And then - concern, compassion, curiosity (that one has very strong coloring from her other half's fascination, which Anakin acknowledges with an almost wry humor).

Deep breath.

"Thank you for telling me," she says, though she doesn't successfully keep her tone exactly even.

And her breath catches, and Anakin still doesn't have perfect self control, so: "Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which part?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why tell me? Is - the first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I was... recruited, I was systematically lied to, deceived, and misled. I hated my first master, and I hate the one I have now. I do not want that to be our relationship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't either."

And, because loving Elesse has never been a decision, never been a judgment - "Do you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She carefully sets Elesse's lightsaber aside and stands, crossing over to her pretty quickly to wrap her in a tight hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. Yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

So much hug.

Anakin curls up with Elesse, putting her head on the older woman's shoulder and reaching out in the Force - offering Elesse her concern, her love, her unshaped determination (she wants to fix this, to destroy anything making Elesse sad - that merges into Anakin's other half's thoughts, because of course it does, and her other half reaches through the Force too, her emotions fiercer, more distinctly protective).

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches up, hesitantly, to pet Anakin's hair lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She presses her face a bit more into Elesse's shoulder, squeezing her.

"I need to - meditate or think or something," she says, "Before I - decide what I feel about this."

"But I care about you. That hasn't changed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." Hug. "Should- Do you want time alone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hm.

"Not right now," she says, voice soft. "I - get into spirals, sometimes."

"I... I think more details would - help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where would you like me to begin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't know."

"I guess - "

Anakin pauses, looking at her own mind for a moment.

She still loves Elesse. Any details about Elesse's motives, her life, will - probably just cement that. (Might damage Anakin's ability to make decisions she endorses, even.)

"I think that - what you're intending to do, if you're - intending to harm me or the galaxy or the Jedi - or if you're intending to - stop your Master or - something - "

"I think that matters practically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My master is planning to install me as Chancellor, destroy the Jedi, and transform the Republic into a new Sith Empire with me as the figurehead, him ruling from the shadows. I plan to kill him, but he is stronger than I, and cunning. I have not found an opportunity to do so yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Horror, visceral and deep, washes through her - and there's a small, vicious echo from her other half, who loves their friends who'd be caught in such a war even if she doesn't love the Jedi.

Deep breath. She forces her emotions to where they aren't clouding her mind - more clumsily than she might otherwise.

"Do you know what you'll do, once he's dead?" she asks, voice wavering.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"...I want you to be free of your Master, and it'd be good for his plans to fail."

"Are you - willing to take my feedback or concerns into account, about what you do after?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snug.

"Thank you."

"...I'm - guessing you don't want me to tell anyone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would prefer that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Lily and Mace would both be really helpful," she says, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I trust you. I do not trust them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay."

"I..."

"I still haven't - decided what I'll do or what I think, but..."

"I think this hasn't - changed what I'm willing to disclose. And I think - I do still want to tell you - the things I was planning on. They matter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, Anakin. I will listen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The first thing - "

"...You might have noticed it, if you're Force sensitive."

"I have two personalities. We - reportedly feel a bit different in the Force."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did notice. You act slightly differently, as well. Different interests, different patterns of activity."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile.

"Yeah. I'm - default a lot - and most people have never met her."

"She's... Younger, mentally. That's why I'd asked you not to flirt with her last year. Though it's - not a consistent kind of younger, and she's been - getting curious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A natural part of growing up, or so I am led to believe."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "Yeah."

"And - I hadn't wanted to pursue - anything like a romantic or sexual or anything relationship before we'd told you, or - until we knew you better."

"And... I think I don't want to pursue that until I've - thought through all the everything now - but me wanting that had been the other thing I'd wanted to bring up..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that is what you want, I am not opposed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bright, happy smile!

"There's stuff - more serious to me than sex or romance? That I keep wanting too, but..."

...She does not know how to say all this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You may be sure that I am very unlikely to deny any request you make."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

"I think the issue is - I'd need to trust you a lot, to do those things with you and have it be - a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take the time you need."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." Snuggle.

...And she actually, really wants to know the answer to if Elesse wants this too, and she doesn't know if an answer would help her think, but.

"The thing I want is - I want to serve you," she says, voice very, very quiet. "More than - just making food for you or being helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," she says softly.

"I would very much like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squirm! A tiny one, but. That might have been a mistake as far as her ability to think clearly about Elesse goes.

"I want you to hurt me, too," she says, eyes wide, voice barely above a whisper. "I want to serve you more, but - I want both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any request you make of me, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Whine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnf. Elesse is mean.

"I need to - think, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snugs.

...She doesn't want to go back and start meditating right away. Maybe she and Elesse can just hold each other for a bit, first...

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds like a good idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

(...It's pretty obvious Anakin isn't going to turn against Elesse. Taking time to think will be - good, anyways.)

Unfortunately, lunchtime does eventually start approaching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want to head back?

Permalink Mark Unread

...They should, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Up, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

And back.

Anakin - thinks she needs to eat lunch in private, right now. She gives Elesse a hug, then grabs some fruit and yogurt and retreats into her room.

It's the evening before she emerges. Not yet dinner time, but - close. She looks pensive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has been painting. The glade they were in earlier today, in fact, though bereft of any human presence in her depiction.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's lovely," she says, quietly, hovering in the doorway.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets her brush down and turns to face Anakin.

"Thank you. It is a place I wish to remember."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me too," she says, then steps inside and walks over. "I've - made my initial decisions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath.

And - kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm!

She melts into Elesse a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she likes that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!!!

And, in a break for air: "I've never kissed anyone before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope your first time meets your expectations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wonderful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

"My other half has some decisions she wants to tell you about, too, but she wants to say them herself tomorrow."

"And - I want to be yours," she says, "With some limits, but... I care about you, and I trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Anakin." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Such kiss.

Anakin's going a bit weak in the knees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious can carry her over to a couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being picked up is nice. (Wiggle wiggle.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to find excuses to make it happen more often. Or create them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another option: Elesse can just pick Anakin up and haul her around whenever she wants. No excuse needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll keep that in mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

No excuse needed for anything Elesse wants to do to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be careful what you wish for, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shivers, eyes going a bit wide. "What do you want to do to me?" she asks, breathless.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would stretch you out and strip you down, claim every inch of your body and mark you as my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmm!!! Wiggle!

"How would you mark me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"With my teeth, perhaps," demonstrative nip. "Or maybe a knife."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not have enough brain to think coherently about that so instead she just makes a small, needy sound and arches into Elesse's teeth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's more I could do to you..." She'll whisper her thoughts into Anakin's ear as she permits her hands to go roving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Moan and wiggle time!

Lots of Elesse's thoughts go down very, very well, even if Anakin's emotions are a bit more conflicted on the extreme ends of what Elesse proposes - but it's all so incredibly hot. (As is the idea of Elesse doing things Anakin feels conflicted about to her anyways, though a tiny shred of Anakin's logical brain says maybe they should discuss that a lot first. Maybe.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't moving past kisses and heavy petting in terms of what she's actually doing to Anakin right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's definitely getting Anakin excited though, and Anakin kisses back with enthusiasm, and starts almost shyly touching Elesse in return.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is to be encouraged.

Permalink Mark Unread

Less shy touching! And: "Can you tell me how to please you best?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She can. And moreover, she will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wonderful perfect amazing Elesse, and Anakin gets to be so good for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is a very good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"How far do you want to go, Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Whine.

She wiggles, makes herself take some deep breaths, and: "With sex stuff - I think anything just sex is definitely okay, it's submissiveness and pain that feel - very high trust - but I don't know, I love you and want to be yours - and I don't know what would count as too much submissiveness, and I decided that before I started kissing you - "

Huff. "Thinking is hard when you're - being all you. It's unfair."

"Nothing - sex or pain or being submissive in just sex stuff or just basic - stuff like cooking for you - was what I'd decided on as my hard limits before I came to talk to you, though. My hard limits are all - other stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try not to exhaust you before dinner, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "Dinner's a good time to talk." And then she squirms a little and kisses Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dinner's pretty soon, unfortunately..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you asking for permission to get started?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!!!

"May I cook you dinner, please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You may, good girl." Sidious will unpin Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her brain a tiny moment to reboot before she can sit up and say, "Thank you, Elesse."

And then: cooking! With a good bit more blatant showing off than usual; Anakin's using the Force to multitask stuff like cutting vegetables.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very impressive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's encouragement gets her showing off even more! (It's very nice how she can be attentive to Elesse's wants while still cooking something complicated like this, actually.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is quite talented.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Anakin finishes pretty quickly, especially given the meal's complexity, and lays everything out in front of Elesse with a flourish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It looks delicious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." She lowers her gaze, blushing lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you sit beside me while I eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, settling her own plates and glass and sitting down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dinner!

Anakin's emotions are a glowing buzz of contentment, which helps her sort her thoughts out into words, at least. "So I'd said I had some hard limits..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mood turns a bit more solemn, more quiet.

"I know you've probably done - and probably still will do - things I'd find... Morally questionable, at best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. That seems... likely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I - don't want my moral code to change enough I'd be horrified at who I'll become. And I don't want to be complicit, even unknowingly, in things I'd - object to."

"I'd rather know than not, though, if it comes down to that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. I will keep that in mind."

"Though unless you decide that you would rather be my apprentice than a Jedi, I do not know that I would come close to calling on you in that manner."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Her emotions do the equivalent of squirming even while she keeps a poker face.

"I'd... Rather you not ask my other half to do things I'd object to, either, but that's - between me and her."

"I'm a Jedi, though. I always will be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyways... I want to help you. To take down your Master, to - help you find your place in the galaxy, after. And I want to work with you, so..."

"There's - routes I'd find more acceptable than others, to doing that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That first requires finding a route that works at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some," she says, confidently. "Where they are... Depends on what you've tried, and what's going on, and what resources we have..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...A long conversation, that. And not one suited to the dinner table."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, leaning into Elesse. "We have a lot of time this vacation, at least..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "And anything you tell to my other half, she can pass on to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall keep that in mind, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a little and kisses Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

And back to eating this wonderful dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Anakin uses all of her Jedi discipline to focus on the food and the excellent warmth of Elesse's company rather than fantasizing about what Elesse might do to her after. (It's very hard.)

Permalink Mark Unread

If she's going to be distracted, she could try sharing her ideas...

Permalink Mark Unread

She's trying not to be distracted!

Permalink Mark Unread

Pity.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's important to savor the full breadth of excellent experiences, here!

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not willing to combine the flavors?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not when they're still new. Each element deserves a full treatment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and leans against Elesse. "I like just spending time with you. All the ways of being with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will be sure to explore all the avenues open before us. One at a time, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

And after dinner, Sidious can see about fulfilling one or two of Anakin's fantasies...

Permalink Mark Unread

Her fantasies are a bit of a tangled mess right now - she has so many - she's spent the last year reading erotica about older women and younger teen girls, and it's given her more than a few ideas, and she's had her own wild imagination -

She wants Elesse to teach her how to have sex, how to please her - she wants what Elesse threatened earlier, to be spread out and claimed and marked - she wants more nebulous things, knows she likes having her neck touched, knows she likes pressing her face into pillows when pleasuring herself, doesn't know how far that desire goes but she dreams about Elesse's hands on her neck - she wants to be good and desired and useful - she wants to fulfill Elesse's every fantasy -

There's a lot for Elesse to choose from, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks they'll start with pleasure, for tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread

A wonderful place to begin.

Permalink Mark Unread

More fun than spending the evening reading?

Permalink Mark Unread

So far!

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggles!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's wiggles: very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being made to wiggle: also very good!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious thinks that Anakin will be well-exhausted when it comes time to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

More than.

She doesn't seem at all eager to try and go back to her own bed, either, instead snuggling into Elesse and yawning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, her bed is large enough for them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle zzzzzzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet zzzzzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a bit of a confused, hazy flipflop of personalities the next morning - but, they agreed last night on who would front today, so it's fairly easy to shift to the other, the not-Anakin.

Anakin would probably be making Elesse breakfast in bed. Not-Anakin would rather make a contented sound, snuggle into Elesse again, and doze until the older woman wakes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is equally a pleasant way to wake up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle! "Mornin'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Good morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "You and Anakin did a lot yesterday. She's all buzzy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is she? Fancy that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles more! And wiggles a bit. "It was fun to watch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose you will be wanting your own turn soon enough?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle wiggle! "Yes."

Then: "Anakin keeps trying to shove me away from her thoughts whenever she's thinking about sex, which is so unfair of her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems you will need to form your own thoughts, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooo that's an idea.

She kisses Elesse, firmly and insistently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Though she wants breakfast before they get very far into anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she insists...

Permalink Mark Unread

She must. Else there will be no hope of keeping up with the younger girl's energy.

Permalink Mark Unread

A reasonable argument. She'll let Elesse out of bed without too much pouting.

Permalink Mark Unread

What shall they make?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd like something sweet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pastries it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

With fruity fillings?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious will start work on that, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can probably help a little... But she's not really the one of them who cooks.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she can follow directions, Sidious can put her to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mostly can. (As long as none of the instructions are 'don't lick the mixing bowl after the batter is out.')

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm... Acceptable, in this case.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good.

They'll have very tasty pastries then, soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

A fine breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah!

"You cook well," she says, cheerfully. "These are good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. I do it for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bright grin! "Because you're awesome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed I am."

"Should I still call you Anakin, by the way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't like it. But I've never picked a name for myself either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want a new name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah, I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can brainstorm together, if you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will see what we can come up with, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

"Sith get special Sith names too, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That is customary, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to be your student, if you'll have me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would always take you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet you say that to Anakin, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would, but she would rather stay a Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "She does. But you'd take her in other ways too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could take you in other ways."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!!! "All the ways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

"I want to be your apprentice first, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you should name me first, too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Traditionally, you would kneel and swear yourself to me first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What kind of swear?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A vow of loyalty, to serve me and honor my teaching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... Serving is more Anakin's thing..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you require me to... persuade you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

"I'm no one's servant. Never again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough, lovely." She leans over for a kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!! "You're excellent, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hence why you are so eager to learn from me, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet your awesomeness will extend to teaching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I think it will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I still be your Apprentice, even if I'm not serving you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"I'll honor your teachings, and I'll listen to your advice, and I'll never turn against you, and I'll be yours. That I swear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I accept your vow, and I will protect, guide, and cherish you as you walk this path. Stand now by my side, Darth... Sangua."

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

She beams and steps up beside Elesse. "Thank you, teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle kiss!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am glad to have you, Sangua."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to have you. You're the best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "I love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you too, Sangua." Kiss.

"Would you like to start with lessons, or fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That is a hard decision.

She hesitates a little, then: "Lessons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lessons, then. The first thing you will need to learn is how to tap in to the dark side."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I have before? When I was a kid - we were using the dark side when Lily found us. But I might not have been doing it correctly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That may make things easier. Strong emotion is the key, and negative emotions are easier to access, making the process of initially opening oneself up often... traumatic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah it really really sucked, it felt like someone was pouring poison into us, and - that was why we made Anakin default after we got out. She could be a Jedi, and... I didn't know how to be happy as myself."

"But you're - good and wonderful and a Sith, and that's - really hopeful to me."

"And... I asked Mace about the dark side some. He says it's not impossible to find happiness in, just that it's - like a storm, and most people who go into it drown."

"And I want it. I want to be the storm, to protect those I love, to embrace everything I am and everything I desire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One must be very sure of their self, and their goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And that was hard when we were a kid."

"I... There's a lot of things I want, and they're all stacked together. A lot of goals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I believe our first step should be attempting to decompose and analyze those."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile. "Guess turning to the Sith isn't enough to get me out of meditative exercises."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sadly, it remains an excellent tool for honing one's focus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take your word for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you do not need to, apprentice. You will see for yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

"Where do I start?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"First, let's move somewhere comfortable..." And then she will explain meditation Sith style.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds more me than the Jedi kind." (Which Anakin has previously explained to Elesse in detail, both the classic ways and the way she does it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then hopefully this will not be too difficult for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Three major themes arise from Sangua's tangle of desires: being herself, being free, and protecting those she loves, though her desires for freedom and self-actualization overlap significantly. There's a lot stacked on top of those of course - destroying anyone who harms her loved ones (she and Anakin both want to kill Sidious's Master), pursuing her every desire, knowing she alone commands herself...

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Then the next step is to begin linking those desires to actions. Which actions can she take in support of which desires, and when she does take an action, which desire is she supporting?

Permalink Mark Unread

A lot of actions that support one thing support multiple...

Protecting her loved ones feels distinct from being herself, but also like she is fundamentally someone who protects - and so growing stronger, growing wiser, gaining any ability to protect, helping her loved ones... Those all feel like both things.

Refusing to swear servitude felt like freedom, but it felt like being herself more than anything... She doesn't need raw destructive ability to define herself in freedom. She just - refusing to do things, leaving, turning to new paths. Choosing to be Sidious's apprentice and not a Jedi. Walking away from old habits that were hurting her. Turning towards - gaining - her desires. Those feel like freedom.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ancient Sith used to say 'the Force shall free me'. Sidious always found that piece of their code... resonant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the full code?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm... It goes- 'Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"I guess whether peace is a lie depends on how you're defining it. Or - that's what Anakin would say, and she's good at that philosophy stuff..."

"And I guess there's the same thing with how you define strength."

"But - breaking chains sounds nice. Being free sounds essential."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I think there's personal peaces you can have, that are real... But stagnation is a lie, as is the idea that the world will never again challenge you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is a good way to look at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious prods for Sangua's further opinions on the code, offering up her own thoughts and interpretations and asking her to elucidate.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has trouble with a lot of it, especially with articulating her own opinions instead of offering Anakin's words. It's rewarding and important... But also pretty mentally tiring, and not very fun or engaging.

She does have a good bit of insight buried in all that, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good insights deserve rewards. For example, kisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much simpler than philosophy.

Permalink Mark Unread

But no less vital to the well-rounded education of a growing girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

True. Proper motivation is very essential.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious will be certain to continue providing it for her apprentice.

Permalink Mark Unread

They've had a long day... Sangua'd like to take a break, and she's pretty sure she deserves a significant reward for her first day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Pleasure, or pain?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no how is she supposed to make a decision like that?

"Both!" she says, wiggling more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Greedy little thing, aren't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know what I want, and I make sure I get it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Then Sidious will scoop her apprentice up and see that she is satisfied.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeee!

(It's really amazing how much energy for satisfaction she has, given how thoroughly Sidious wrung Anakin out the night before. Her level of masochism is also impressive.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Rather attractive qualities. (If she were twenty years younger... But at least she has the Force.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(She only whines a little about being tied up and attended to purely through the Force, if Sidious goes that route.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems a suitable end to the... festivities.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a good way to get Sangua boneless and exhausted and smiling dreamily at her teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sangua thinks so. (Snuggle.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmm good pets. Excellent teacher. Love.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm good.

Is it bedtime now for a certain girl?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Let's get her cleaned up a bit, then they can snuggle under the covers.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's languid and cuddly while her teacher cleans her. Not particularly helpful, but definitely very appreciative.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent, then.

(Zzzzz.)

Permalink Mark Unread

To sleep, until the next morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin and Sangua trade off equally over the rest of the vacation. Both, of course,  fawn over their girlfriend, and both give a good bit of attention to getting up to speed on her enemies. (They have different focuses, though - Anakin on the indirect threats, the politics, potential dead man's switches, Sangua on the logistics of a direct fight. Anakin spends more time on it, too - Sangua's busy with her training, which she takes to beautifully and eagerly.)

They do keep in mind that this is a vacation, though, and they spend a lot of time on getting Elesse/ Sidious (there's a split there, too - Anakin still calls her Elesse, whereas Sangua calls her Sidious with a delighted purr) to make out with them or more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not especially difficult, as these things go. She is very willing to indulge both her girls.

"There is someone I would like you to meet," she says to Sangua towards the end of their stay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. "Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My other apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mentioned last year having someone else precious to you - is that them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I definitely want to meet them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Smile. "He can be here by tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! "I'll front tomorrow, too, so I can get to know him some. Anakin can have the day after."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A sound plan, my dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle kiss!

"What's he like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quiet. Dutiful, loyal. Sharp sense of humor if you poke him right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He sounds nice. And I bet Anakin will like him, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do hope so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Teasingly: "I think she'll like being shared with people you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shall just have to wait and see."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

And later that evening, there is a knock on the door of the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hurries to get it, bouncing excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a red Zabrak, tattooed heavily and only a little taller than Sangua.

"You must be the new apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You must be the existing apprentice." She eyes him pretty hungrily, then steps aside and gestures in. "Come on in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." He enters. "I am Maul."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Sangua. It's good to meet you, Maul."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny shiver.

"Let's go find Sidious," she says, brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

To her girlfriend!

Permalink Mark Unread

He kneels when they enter Sidious's presence.

Permalink Mark Unread

She walks over to run a hand across the top of his head, around the bumps of his horns.

"Apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Master. I have returned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed you have. Come, sit with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

He rises and allows himself to be led.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's Sangua's turn to smirk. (And Anakin is definitely going to have fun next time Sangua lets her have the body.)

(Sangua's going to have fun.)

"How long have you been Sidious's?" she asks him, tone all innocence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All my life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's had you since you were a baby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds nice," she says, wistfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sidious is a good mom too, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's the best at a lot of stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I agree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent taste in apprentices, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For a sample of two."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shows she has discriminating taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do choose my followers carefully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A very exclusive club."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much kiss!

(And then she eyes Maul, gaze hungry.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come demonstrate your skills to your junior, Maul."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, master."

And then he's on Sangua.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmph!

She isn't at all passive, though, nor particularly inclined to release control to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

A worthy contest.

Permalink Mark Unread

A fun contest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite enjoyable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Showing off for Sidious adds a depth to it that threatens to distract Sangua from winning this fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's always next time.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll give this time her all, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas, she needs just a little more practice to really keep up.

Permalink Mark Unread

How unfortunate for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems likely to have plenty of opportunities to do so in her future, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Right now, she squirms, laughing, when Maul gets her pinned under him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to claim his prize, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

His master chose well. Not that there was any doubt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm good. And Sidious picked him well too.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's so pleased her apprentices are getting along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, they'll still need to introduce Anakin and Maul...

Permalink Mark Unread

There will be time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Maul's her shiny new metamour right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sidious is so pretty.)

Satisfied wiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does like those wiggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sangua should wiggle more, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious will give her cause to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

And excellent, cozy, warm, strong metamour.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is good to get along with one's colleagues.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kisses for the both of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle kiss.

(Probably she should ever have a conversation with her metamour instead of just sex. Probably.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Time enough for that tomorrow, surely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Especially with how late he got in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best not to stress him unduly. Let him relax.

Permalink Mark Unread

Make sure he gets a good night's sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sangua, fortunately, is very relaxing. Really.

Permalink Mark Unread

Certainly adept at tiring one out before bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's very curious if she can physically exhaust both Sidious and Maul.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's much more difficult for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sangua's determined, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a good try at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll get her endurance up soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good to have a goal.

Permalink Mark Unread

A chance for measurable improvement outside of her usual training.

Permalink Mark Unread

How her kind her teacher is, to present her with this opportunity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kind and wonderful and perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle kiss!!

Permalink Mark Unread

All in all, an enjoyable night.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a pleasantly sore morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maul is up early enough to make breakfast for everyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good to have help around the place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can't leave Sidious alone to care for herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Make sure she has sufficient coverage for babysitting.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's to let her focus on the important things, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

Use her valuable time wisely.

Permalink Mark Unread

While her apprentices clear the way for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning, apprentices. I trust you are not getting up to too much trouble?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only entirely appropriate amounts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Then to breakfast?

Permalink Mark Unread

To breakfast! (Maul's cooking is very good.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He carries himself with grace in all his pursuits.

Permalink Mark Unread

And causes exceptional pleasure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quiet smug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely a good addition to this vacation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed. However belated.

Alas, their private time soon comes to an end, and Maul must vanish back into the shadows. The time is not yet ripe for him to openly reveal himself to the wider galaxy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious's girlfriend^2 have had fun getting to know him, at least - and they'll miss him, as well as the chance to spend all their days together.

(It'd be really, really nice to be able to be all together without hiding it. To be just themselves, no one others will notice or try to interfere with the lives of.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Something to keep in mind as they work towards the future.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good to have a definition of the world they want, something specific, to focus their goals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

They still need to figure out what Elesse's going to do once she's freed, once her Master can't touch her anymore...

(It's looking more likely by the day that they'll succeed. Both Anakin and Sangua are growing dramatically in their power, their control and self-mastery, soaking up the teachings of both the Jedi and the Sith.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She steals as many moments as she can for Sangua's training, between her public life as Senator, her time with Anakin, and her own duties as Sith.

Not to mention Sidious's own investigations. Growing her own power, studying history... looking in to whichever odd note catches her eye. One of which- Anakin had mentioned that she believed her father to be a darksider. Potentially valuable information, that. She starts with a DNA sample... and then has to pause for a moment. She sends a coded message to Maul, telling him he needs to access the archive where she stored the records of her first master, after Sidious killed her.

Three days after he brings the information back to her, she summons Sangua for a meeting.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't get away immediately - but she's able to come meet her teacher soon enough.

"Is something up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In a... manner of speaking."

"I know who your darksider parent was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

She comes to lean against Sidious. "Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls back. " - What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My- first master was... a biologist. She liked my power, but not my self. She decided to harvest my genetic material and create an improved version, one she could mold more carefully. I killed her before she could bring that plan to fruition."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her brain is screaming, and her teacher's words feel distant, distorted. They only kind of make sense. "I - you - "

Her voice cracks. Then, quietly: "You didn't know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I swear to you, if I had, it never would have taken me fourteen years to catch up to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - How could you not know?"

(Sangua is, going by the whirlwind of her emotions in the Force, definitely panicking. (Not that she's realized this - everything is too big, her emotions simple and strong and drowning her, and the way her brain's sweeping along is hampering Anakin's efforts to push to the front, to intervene before Sangua melts down entirely.))

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was- too much happening. Too much that I wanted to bury."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a distressed noise, and her emotions teeter -

Permalink Mark Unread

And the lash as her fear tries to shift into rage creates just enough of an opening.

Her emotions crack, her body struggling to catch up with the sudden shift, and Anakin sways, knees going weak, as she tries to clear her mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious catches her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She collapses into Elesse.

"'m sorry," she mumbles. "We're not mad at you, Sangua just - "

Deep breaths. Rediscovering her center is essential. She needs to not drift out of her tenuous grasp on stability - needs to stay in control of the body.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"...I'm sorry your old Master did that to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sorry that the two of you were affected."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tight hug. "I don't regret the life I've had. It's made me who I am - made us who we are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should have been able to give you a better one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tighter hug.

" - I think that's some of what Sangua is scared of. That it'd - change things, that you might want the idea of the us you'd raised and not the actual us. Though she's... Not being very coherent right now..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"The ones I love are you. This- doesn't change that. Nothing will."

"I just would have spared you the pain, if I could."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The pain made us."

"We love you, and we know you love us - but it's okay. We value having had the life we have, even though it sucked."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath.

"Thank you. I needed to hear that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

" - Will this change anything? About - our relationship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not if you do not wish it to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that might be what Sangua needs right now, for nothing to change."

"And I..." She leans against Elesse, trying to get her thoughts in order.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you, and I love being your girlfriend, and I don't want to stop, but - "

"The idea of you being my mom is... Really nice, I think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I begin reprimanding you for staying out too late?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "Maybe."

"Can we be both? Girlfriends and - mom and daughter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If Sangua and I can be girlfriends as well as master and apprentice- I do not see why not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmm she adores Elesse.

Then: "I'm - you named Sangua."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you petitioning for me to give my other daughter a name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle! "Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

"I might need to think about that one for a time."

"Shouldn't name children impulsively."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet.

"I will give you all the consideration you deserve."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmkiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

"Can I call you mom?" she murmurs, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"When we are in private, certainly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." Kiss!

(...Though it'd be very nice to be able to be openly Elesse's...)

Permalink Mark Unread

"One day, my dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee!

"Are you reading my mind, mom?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She taps Anakin on the tip of her nose. "Only your face, daughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses Elesse's finger. "Perhaps you should read my mind, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps I shall."

Anakin feels Sidious's presence reach out and wrap around her like a heavy blanket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Moan.

(She provides zero resistance.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She sinks her tendrils deep into Anakin's mind, dredging through its secrets.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Anakin is incredibly horny' and 'Anakin loves loves loves Elesse' probably don't count as secrets. They fill a significant amount of her awareness right now, though.

Beneath that - Sangua is separated off, warier, seems to want to be left alone to think - but Anakin's own mind is a treasure trove regardless. Her thoughts currently whirl back to Elesse, and she's clearly aware of where Elesse is in her mind - it's clear that she thinks of her girlfriend as Elesse and not as Sidious, that she and Sangua think of their girlfriend different, conceptualize her as almost different people -

She wants to belong to Elesse, as thoroughly as she can. Wants to crawl inside Elesse's skin, into her life, weave themselves so thoroughly together neither can ever pull away. Anakin has complicated feelings about belonging as a slave - the idea occurs to her pretty often, she wants to submit and serve and be owned - but there's a complicated tug of war there, some of those tugs leading back to where her mind's entangled with Sangua.

She wants to help Elesse. She wants to destroy Elesse's Master, to free her girlfriend - she dreams of Elesse leaving the Senate behind, of Sidious renouncing any potential opposition to the Jedi, of peace and quiet - of having their own house together, making a life together - Anakin still thinks Elesse should accept help from Anakin's teacher, but doesn't want to push it - but the link to her memories of Jedi Masters Lily Palpatine and Mace Windu is very clear there, if Elesse wants to dig through them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She loves her Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good!!!!!! (Wiggle!!!!!!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Elesse wants Anakin to stop having coherent thoughts, this is apparently an efficient way to achieve that!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's certainly not unwelcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin likes having thoughts, but this is very nice as a sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

It can be a special treat for her, then. When she's been very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin will be the best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her perfect girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very kiss.

And she has some free time still, before she's expected back at the Temple... (Though Elesse should totally find an excuse to have Anakin over more.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll see what she can do. A weekend trip offworld, perhaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe. Or maybe Anakin can get a Senate assignment...

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be very convenient.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be a way for her to get valuable mission experience while still attending her classes, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like an easy sell.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin will put her best persuasive skills towards it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mother will expect nothing less.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Then Anakin definitely won't disappoint.

(She'll get on it later, though. Right now, she's kissing her Elesse.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And she'll certainly need to concentrate on that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's the most important thing she could possibly be doing..

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin does all the important things.

And, the next day, she successfully gets an assignment to the Senate, to get training on working with the Guard and on general political liason stuff - she's working alongside Lily of course, mostly under her tutelage, but she's a senior padawan and trusted to direct herself.

(Sangua is sulking, but... Anakin fronting for a long stretch in a row isn't all that weird.)

Permalink Mark Unread

When she's ready to talk, Elesse can arrange that they have some private time without raising eyebrows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin would like to have private time even before then... It's been a while since she's run a mission with Elesse, and getting to work for her formally is... Very enjoyable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps they can take dinner together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds wonderful.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll make it happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent. (Anticipatory wiggle.)

(And of course, it'll be only appropriate if Anakin serves Elesse her dinner...)

Permalink Mark Unread

She is here to serve the Senate.

Permalink Mark Unread

To put herself at their disposal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's disposal, specifically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll delegate Anakin to arrange the specifics of the meal, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Anakin picks up food from a restaurant that specializes in catering (tragically she can't really arrange cooking herself right now) and brings it to Elesse's Senatorial office, laying the meals out before her girlfriend with careful presentation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everything looks delicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Senator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fetch me some of the water, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her gaze drops demurely, and she says, tone breathy and yearning: "Yes, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

(There's a flicker then in the Force, an echo - )

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sangua whirls to front, turning as her hand falls to her lightsaber, wrapping her mind protectively around Anakin and putting herself between Elesse and -

Permalink Mark Unread

A scared girl, a wavering mirror of Sangua - of Anakin - who startles and flinches away from her reflection -

Permalink Mark Unread

This one is not supposed to be here-

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems to agree, going by how she slips out of their world as a near-panic wraps around her, plunging her back out through the complicated threads of the Force that she initially slipped in through -

She vanishes nearly as quickly as she appeared, and the Force quiets down.

(She looked young. Maybe twelve, maybe thirteen at the oldest, dressed in cold weather gear...)

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I have never heard of that happening before."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That's the type of gear padawans wear to Ilum, I think, and it looked like she was holding a crystal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did it match Anakin's crystal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Crystals, particularly in large quantity, can sometimes do strange things, but she would have mentioned if she'd seen us before..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our Anakin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That wasn't her," she says. "The Force signature was - different enough. We maybe felt a little like that before we split, we weren't really aware of our own signature back then though... And I remember her trip to Ilum. This - didn't happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. We will need to do some research."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

...Oh no now she's processing that she's alone in a room with Elesse after having been sulking, and everything is awkward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sidious stands and walks over to Sangua.

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances away. Awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wraps her apprentice in a hug.

"It is good to see you again."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates for a moment - and then melts into the hug.

"Sorry I was being a brat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Part of your charm, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and kisses her girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Still the best girlfriend.

"I don't - want to be your daughter," she says after they've gotten some air. "But I'm glad Anakin gets to have that, and - I like being your apprentice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like having you for an apprentice too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"We each get a different part of you, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately, there is enough of me to go around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Splitting you three ways would get awkward otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might have to share less evenly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be very tragic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One for the ages, truly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might just have to make more of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The best things in life are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Far be it from me to disagree," says the Sith Lord.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Then, with a hum: "I hope that other Anakin - whoever she is - has her own Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She did look surprised to see me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We hadn't met you yet when we were on Ilum, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose not. Perhaps this will catalyze her seeking me out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

"...She felt - scared, though."

"I think - Anakin's worrying about if she's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are strong. She will pull through."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I know she will."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hungry kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm, Sidious has missed her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's missed Sidious. (Sangua should possibly sulk less in the future.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Or maybe just do it where Sidious can tickle her out of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sangua prefers other methods of distraction...

Permalink Mark Unread

Whatever works.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her teacher is definitely doing a good job of driving her out of her funk, regardless.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wouldn't be much of a teacher if she continued to let her student wallow.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sidious's very much the best.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's very lovely that she thinks so.

Permalink Mark Unread

She knows so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

At some point they should get back to eating dinner...

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Though Sangua will have to switch back with Anakin if Sidious wants to be served.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can do for herself, if her apprentice would like to stay around a while longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

She would. She's missed her teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then that is what they shall do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wonderful perfect. (Though now Sidious will have to schedule a make up dinner with Anakin, of course.)

Permalink Mark Unread

No great hardship, that.
