maintenance party
the first maintenance shift of the new year

What Meng Yao wants to do is talk to Lan Xichen about reassuring the freshman indies that while Shanghai might be doing something sketchy, upon closer examination they're actually behaving perfectly reasonably.

But he knows that the problem will keep; the freshman indies are powerless, being freshman and indies, and while they wouldn't want to sit on the problem for weeks it can easily wait until Sunday to address, and it isn't worth the effort to trade their maintenance shifts.

So instead he's heading down to the cafeteria to sweep the floor.

When he graduates, he thinks to himself not for the first time, neither he nor his mother is ever going to have to sweep a floor again.

Huang's assignment is to clean the cafeteria. Actually, three of her assignments are to clean the cafeteria; there are different sections she's supposed to cover. There should be a broom closet around her somewhere.

When she gets there a person with a powersharer is already sweeping the cafeteria.

A junior spots her. "The broom closet's over there, is there anything else you're going to need help finding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm also supposed to scrub tables and chairs. Did you already check the closet for mals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but one might have crawled in, I'll go with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is extremely generous. She bows to him about it and says, "Thank you very much."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's really not, if a mal eats Huang they might be down a freshman for weeks.

"How are you settling in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As well as can be expected, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What track are you? I'm alchemy track."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was led to expect I would not have much opportunity to specialize, but I think my affinity is best served by incantations - it's weather magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds very useful." Out there, he doesn't add. "Mine is thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doing what with them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Controlling them. Mine and other people's. It's helpful for studying and I have a really nice truth potion, but there aren't a lot of good other uses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Usefulness for studying could be very important here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It really is! I can loop my thoughts so that they always go back to what I'm working on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't prevent you from looking out for mals?" Mop; sponge; bucket.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do it in my room which has very good wards."

He begins to mop the floor near her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mop mop mop. "I had been told it was wiser to study in the library, but perhaps that advice was aimed at people without very good wards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The library can still be useful because you get books, but I recommend studying there unless you're allied with a junior with a wards affinity."

Permalink Mark Unread

Which she is not. "I'm planning to try to find a carrel today after maintenance if I have time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck. I hope you find someone here to study with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone in my Korean History class agreed to trade me notes if I miss the class session, but I don't know that she will want to study together more generally; I believe she's from an American enclave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enclavers often don't want to study with indies," he says neutrally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've gathered. I didn't meet anyone in my other classes of the day but I will have a new class on Monday and more on Tuesday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can also often meet people at meals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've done that too, but not having classes with them makes it less likely they will want to study together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What classes are you in? Maybe I can introduce you if I know someone else looking for a study partner."

She has her schedule in her pocket and hands it over.

"You have Intro Lab, Intro Shop, and Applied Mathematics with Kinsei, who's a Japanese indie. Mei, who's first-generation Kyoto enclave, shares History of Japanese Theater & Storytelling and Intro Lab with you. And Tomonori, another Japanese indie, has Intro to Economics with you."

Omniscience is fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a lot of coincidental Japanese people. "I'll keep an eye out for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take this section, a-Yao?" the junior with a power sharer calls to Meng Yao.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was led to understand it was unusual for enclavers to do this," Huang remarks, continuing to mop her own area.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lan Xichen is a very unusual person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it would seem."
