Time passes, quite uneventfully. Tutoring goes fine – Evelyn gets a bit more of an interest in history, and she gets a bit more of an 'in' to the sports crowd.
She's a bit concerned with all the deity-invoking, when it comes to magic. She's even more concerned when she finds out that some of the deities do in fact exist – it's not just part of an incantation – and the reality of the situation sets in.
She drifts away from Cassie a bit, after that, what with her reluctance to do more magic. There are a few basic spells she learns, but anything large-scale… she tries to keep away from that sort of stuff. The idea of helping people, it's definitely important, but – she feels like she could quite easily go off the deep end and really screw herself, and quite a few others, over.
And then it gets to summer. There are a few parties, there's a ton of new gossip about various activities various people did or did not take part in, and Evelyn continues to cement her place in the hierarchy. She gains more enthusiasm for things, there having been no spectacular disasters in a while, and feels a little guilty about – just ignoring the hidden world around them.
Not like she can do anything about it anyway.
And then junior year starts.
