The seniors take the best seats, of course, but a convenient thing about that is that by the time the freshmen eat, the seniors are clearing out, so the best seats are available anew. The lucky freshmen at the front of the freshman dinner line bolt for them, in some cases with their trays half-full because they have determined a good seat is worth more than a full tray.

"Poppy, I met people!"

"Oh yeah? What people?"

"The fellow in the corner called Virgil, and, uh... Yolanda...?"

"So, two people."

"...yes."

"Go sit somewhere else," Poppy insists, "and you can join us for pudding if you like after."

Poppy in no way has the authority to insist on that but Sean doesn't see much sympathy from anyone else so he tromps off to put his tray somewhere else.

Two girls come off the line together with trays. One is short, stocky, with dark hair, the other tall with light hair, well dressed and strikingly good looking. She has a power sharer on her wrist.

Ellen goes over to a table, puts her tray on it, sits down.

Mari taps her on the shoulder; Ellen looks up.

"Vent above us." She points.

If something dropped on her Ellen could burn it. If she saw it first. If it was something that could burn. Burning it would take mana. Mana she used today she wouldn’t have tomorrow. Or for graduation.

Mari was right.

“I was thinking about how to improve one of my spells.”
