[homeroom] Room 30
Dennis, Ghyslaine, Orion, Wil, Ribo, Jeremy

Orion's slip says Room 30. After he's performed some perfunctory ablutions and walked Chloe to her homeroom since they're on the same hall to begin with he finds his, though it requires a fair amount of map-staring. He goes in - it's a little room, only fifteen desks, two people here before him but they're doing really thorough checking of the place. Seems like overkill, anything really bad would be easy to see in a little room like this. Unless the one of the desks is a mimic? He kicks the desks. None of them are mimics. He sits down in the last one he kicked.

When Dennis comes in he immediately checks everything again, even if there are other people in here already.

Ribo rechecks her room and her critters when she wakes up and spends a bit of time whispering reassurances to the critters and various other possessions. Then she finds the homeroom slip, compares it to her memorized blueprint and makes her way to the room with Alacrity. She does a quick check of the room by eye and asks "Did anyone notice any Mals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not so far," says one of the people who's been sitting here since before Orion got in.

Wilbur comes in, checks the room again, gives Ghyslaine a critical once-over, and finds a seat not near any vents or anything.

Liath walks into the room and smoothly takes one of the good seats.

Orion is not paying much attention to his desk, so his schedule appears. He picks it up and looks at it but doesn't take any actions about it right away.

Silas swings by about twenty minutes into homeroom. He's making the rounds of every room with a New York student in it, so they can coordinate schedules. "Big question," he says to Orion quietly. "There's apparently an Intro to Shop first thing Monday morning. Do you want it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh? Sure, why not? I have... a... French poetry thing, then, I won't miss it."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - because the workshop is incredibly dangerous Monday mornings. The general advice to freshmen is shop Tuesday or Wednesday and not first thing. But if you're sure you can handle it, we'll put everyone in Monday morning, get first pick of equipment for the graduating seniors. It's not worth it if you think you might get in over your head, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. What else have you got -"

Permalink Mark Unread

Orion hands his schedule over.

Silas consults his notes. "We can have everyone in Intro to Lab Tuesday before lunch if we're doing Intro to Shop first thing Monday, and we'll put you in algebra - I'm covering for everyone who doesn't want to take it, so you can show up or not, as you like - and then Magnus got Latin literature, which counts as second-language, lit, and history, and we have all the assignments from last year's freshmen, so I'll put you in that too? I don't know where that'll bump your lang lab but it should be fine regardless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you're all set." He hands it back. "See you at breakfast!" And he waits expectantly for a moment in case any other kids in the room want to beg favors of New York.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ribo carefully looks away from her desk on a regular basis. When she gets her schedule she walks over to Orion and asks "Is it ok if I try for those workshop and lab slots? I'll let your enclave mates have first pick of materials of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs and shows her his schedule.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks." She takes that as assent and shifts her schedule to match. After making those changes she has language lab first thing Thursdays. Asia in Modern History MWF after lab and Malefecaria studies.  Western European History through 1500 for history for the second half of the morning on Thursday. Fundamentals of Mechanical Design after Alchemy lab on Tuesday. Back to back math in the form of Formal Logic for Spellcraft and Applied Electromechanics on Tuesday and Thursday evening. Calculus for Engineers right before lunch on MWF. And two writing classes in Russian Literature before Pushkin and Poetry & Prosody after work period on MWF. Nothing is objectionable so she leaves things as is and doesn't try to use her third schedule change.

"Can I see?" he asks both of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure," she holds it out to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You took Monday shop?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Two New York Enclavers are doing it, and it was implied that the rest would be too. If they have reason to believe it's worth the risk I'm willing to take that risk too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...see." His eyes flick to Orion Lake. "Do you think they'll be angry if indies show up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Orion is looking at his watch. His stomach rumbles a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I asked Orion and he didn't seem to care, I think that's enough cover if it if I don't try to take rare stuff the New Yorkers want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

He's an artificer too. It's a gamble, but--he puts down for Monday shop. You don't survive in the Scholomance without taking any risks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess I'll see you there then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, maybe you have to take some risks, but that? That is not one of the risks he's gonna take. Apparently his shop class is on Wednesday by default, which should be fine, especially since he's not planning to do a ton of artificing.

He does move his alch lab to match New York's, though, which is what he would have done anyway. His first version gave him alch lab on Friday, which is just mean.

Wil is late to homeroom; he takes one of the remaining seats and immediately tries to not pay attention to his desk. It's surprisingly hard--pink elephants and all that--but luckily he's very good at forgetting what he's supposed to be doing and getting distracted, so he gets his schedule while listening to everyone else talk about theirs.

His shop class is on Wednesday by default too; he'll keep that. He leans back in his chair to talk to Dennis. "Hey, we've got shop together. Unless we switch it for other classes, which, who knows, this is my first schedule."

Liath notices that her schedule has appeared, and scans through it.

Monday morning language lab of course, since she's Invocations track. After that... a work period? What? That's some luck, the rest of the schedule must be dogshit -

"Borders, Cultures, and Enclaves: How Shanghai Got Its Start" after lunch, in Mandarin, which is fine because her Mandarin is stellar. Then "History of Magical Education", filler class for the history requirement.

Tuesday morning... "A close reading of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms", in Mandarin again. Did the Scholomance hear her, is it trying to call her bluff? She will absolutely go with that. Then Latin prosody, which is fine, she knows the language family well enough to interpolate Latin. Lying With Statistics before lunch, okay. Then "Modern Magical History", doesn't sound too heavy, and - "Applied Electromechanics." That is not exactly her strong suit, she should probably look to trade that away to somebody or else hire a minion.

Wednesday has Intro To Lab before lunch after Maleficaria Studies, in Mandarin again. That... is a bit risky. Her Mandarin is stellar, but doing alchemy in it? There'll be all kinds of technical language. What about shop -

Shop is on Friday before lunch and it's blessedly in English. Alright.

She should probably put in for transfers out of Mandarin Lab and Applied Electromechanics. She just needs to find someone with a better class than that in the Tuesday afternoon slot...

"Anyone here want to share schedules?", she asks, waving with the hand with the power sharer on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to make more changes but maybe you have something especially interesting. I'm Ribo by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Liath, Santa Barbara Enclave." She walks over to Ribo but doesn't show her schedule yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ribo holds out her schedule.

Permalink Mark Unread

Liath shows hers back in exchange.

"Oh, we both have Applied Electromechanics. Drat, I was hoping to get out of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, maybe somebody else has something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyone else want to share?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When do you have Applied Electromechanics again?" he saw it on Ribo's sheet but can't recall exactly where since he didn't want to try to take it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tuesday and Thursday, last class of the day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have Materials Identification then. What do you have Thursday before lunch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lying With Statistics."

Permalink Mark Unread

"--That's brilliant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like we might end up with a couple classes together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I certainly wouldn't object. How do you feel about spidersilk?" WAIT ABORT ABORT THIS IS PROBABLY THE WRONG TIME TO ADVERTISE THAT WAS A COMPLETE NON-SEQUITUR.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, it's strong, it's light, it's probably fairly useful stuff. I'm not in the market for it though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." That was probably a disaster but it's probably a disaster he can ignore. Nacha pokes his ear comfortingly with a pedipalp.
