Be near when I call your name
December fights crime (again)
Permalink Mark Unread

The package of arcane energies spins through the space between worlds. There is no time here, so it is not in a hurry per se, but it does want to reach its destination and fulfill its purpose, so much as it wants anything.

It strains, reaching out for its destination, its recipient, wrapping tightly around her soul —

— and it has just slightly too much "momentum", pulling her free from the cradle of her world and out into what, in some places, they call the Bleed.

The gift and its recipient pop back into reality on the corner of a street, across the road from "Central City Pizza — Try Our Central Pepperoni!". The muted honks of cars compete with the distant sound of cackling.

December was posting online to a trans support group as its volunteer moderator, so to say that she's surprised at being dumped on her ass in a v-necked T-shirt and slacks in the middle of a city is an understatement to say the least. She hasn't even got shoes on.

What? What just happened? Central City isn't a real place name, right? And who's cackling? Isn't she supposed to have a monopoly on that?

She lurches to her feet and tries her best to orient herself, her gaze whipping around to try and find the source of the laughter.

Down the street, a man in an unseasonable parka is pointing a vaguely ray-gun looking device at a young man in brightly colored spandex. The boy's feet appear to be frozen to the ground, and an armored van has been overturned in the background.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a hesitant knocking at her mind, a gentle mental connection.

Does she want to be able to suppress other people's ability to cackle?

The question comes with the impression that the choice is entirely up to her, and she's free to refuse. If she pushes the source of the question away, it will leave her alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah uhhhh maybe give her something to disarm the dude pointing a weapon at a stranger in public? That seems like a smart move!

Permalink Mark Unread

It can give her intuitive skill with safely disarming people holding ranged weapons. Or maybe the ability to fire beams that knock things out of people's hands?

Does she want one of those?

Permalink Mark Unread

YES FIRING BEAMS TO KNOCK THINGS OUT OF PEOPLE'S HANDS PLEASE

Permalink Mark Unread

A spark of light blooms into some new internal space inside her, and suddenly firing beams that knock things out of people's hands is just something she can do, like moving her arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily, the man in the parka seems to be fully distracted by monologuing.

"... and that's when I'll strike! So, you see, he has no chance against me! In fact ..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She fires a beam to de-gun parka man. Figure out the rest later.

Permalink Mark Unread

The gun bucks in his hand, and he lurches forward, grabbing to try to maintain hold of it —

— and, unfortunately, letting go of the deadman switch in his other hand, causing a device by his feet to emit a pale blue wash of color—

Permalink Mark Unread

— while a larger man in a red and gold suit throws a rock at the ice around the boy's feet, and then somehow pulls him away in a blur —

Permalink Mark Unread

— and leaves parka man frozen motionless in his own blue bubble, the gun suspended in mid-air just past his fumbling fingers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fascinating. Uh. She probably should not have done that so fast, that was awkward.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone okay?" She calls out.

She has no idea what she's doing but she will hopefully be okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, uh, think I twisted my ankle when The Flash pulled me out," the kid in the yellow body-stocking replies.

Permalink Mark Unread

The man in red — The Flash, presumably — helps him to a seat on the curb.

"Thank you for giving me an opening, by the way," he adds. "I'll be back in a moment — I have to run."

He vanishes in a blur, speeding out into the city. He returns a few seconds later and starts blurring around the armored car.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I'm Kid Flash — I don't think I recognize you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Something for healing sprains, please?

"I'm December Morning-Glory and I have no idea what's going on but the guy pointing a gun seemed like it needed to get fixed. Sorry, I should've had more of a handle on the situation before I did something. Uh, can I see your leg? I might be able to do something about it, not sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

It can do a power for slowly healing sprains of consenting people at touch range, sure!

A second spark blooms to life within her. The two sparks don't seem to like each other much, and settle into a wide orbit around one another.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, sure?"

Kid Flash extends his leg with a wince.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gently lays a hand on it and starts using the power.

"Hopefully this works!"

December looks up with a hesitant smile.

She has no clue if Kid Flash knows if she's trans or not but she doesn't really care, that's his problem. He may or may not have noticed she's not wearing shoes. He also may or may not have noticed that she's 6'1. He probably is noticing that she is not wearing a bra beneath her t-shirt. (She still hasn't gotten the coursge together to go to a women's wear store to get something properly fitted, and besides, her breasts have been growing in this whole time so it'd have been a bit of a waste of her limited cash.) She looks about nineteen and is doing her best to look friendly and helpful without literally throwing a power at it.

Is she even still on Earth? Superpowers weren't a thing where she came from.

"I'm really confused right now for a lot of reasons, I was in my apartment and then there was this — stretching sensation — and suddenly I was here and had powers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kid Flash has definitely noticed that the older girl leaning over him to treat his leg is wearing a v-neck and no bra, but he's trying to be discrete about it.

"Uh ... That does sound pretty confusing," he agrees.

But it's not the weirdest thing he's run into since he started helping The Flash.

"If this is your first minute of having powers, you're doing pretty well! I didn't stop a villain until, like, thirty minutes in, and speed is my thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, I try."

Is she just stuck with the weapon knocking beam forever now or can she remove it again? She tries to "unslot" it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It drifts out of her internal space and away into the darkness in response to her push.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay so... Can she get a sensing power for diagnosis? She's not entirely sure a sprain is what's going on, and being able to direct her power better would probably be helpful, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, she can get a power for sensing the nature of injuries of consenting people at touch range! The new spark seems to like her healing spark, and they start orbiting each other closely.

Kid Flash has a small tear in one of his ankle ligaments and a bruise forming on the bone, but it would probably recover with a few days of rest, even in the absence of magical powers. With them, and directed by her new sense, she can probably have him good as new in a few minutes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will focus on that then.

Although... If she can heal, can she also modify? Her body could use some adjustments. She likes her height, but if she can adjust her body composition, that could give her everything from wider hips to claws to — she's getting ahead of herself.

A power for making herself more shaped like the image of herself she has in her head?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, it can do a power like that: slow regeneration toward her current mental image of herself. It has to be slow to avoid being too 'big'.

This new power seems to have a tenuous connection to her injury-sensing power, but it doesn't like the sprain-healing power. The three swing around in an unstable arrangement, trying to settle down.

With three powers inside herself, she starts to get a feeling of fullness — she could probably fit one more power, but no more than that.

Permalink Mark Unread

So then...

A spark for very accurate visualization. The best mind's eye her power can give her. It's okay if it takes a while to get to her ideal form; as long as it's self-sustaining once created she'll be fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Accurate visualization is definitely possible!

A fourth spark brightens. This one makes the fullness more obvious — she will have to discard a spark or merge some of them if she wants any more.

Permalink Mark Unread

While she sorts that out and continues focusing on Kid Flash's leg, The Flash finishes whatever he was doing, including getting the parka man out of the blue field and into more conventional restraints.

"Alright — everything should be wrapped up except for waiting on the police," he remarks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is December — she's maybe from another world and says she can heal my ankle," Kid Flash introduces.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," she says, and pictures him in a tutu. It works, which stuns her for a second — having a mind's eye at all is unusual for her — and she pauses for a second to try and rebuild her network.

She nudges the visualization power together with the personal body-modification power, and tries to make them click together.

Permalink Mark Unread

They click together like magnets, combining into a slightly brighter spark that gives her the ability to slowly regenerate toward a mental image that she can set and elaborate through visualization.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another world, huh?"

He notices the lack of shoes.

"Was that intentional?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaaaabsolutely not, I was chilling in my apartment browsing the internet and then wham. I don't know how this works, overall. Figuring it out as fast as I can, but..." She shrugs with the shoulder that's not healing Kid Flash.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Well, welcome to Earth. I don't know if we'll be able to send you back, but our best bet is probably to run you through my friend Batman's scanners and see if we can work out what happened. Once the police show up to take custody of Captain Cold, I can take you there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be great, thanks. And, uh, I was already on Earth? An Earth anyway. We both seem to speak English, which is certainly something."

Permalink Mark Unread

He chuckles.

"You would be amazed at the number of aliens who show up with working universal translators. It's honestly pretty convenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's really weird are the ones who end up with accents. The first alien I ran into was this little grey guy who sounded like he was from Australia," Kid Flash adds. "No idea why."

He experimentally prods at his ankle and then tries rolling it a bit.

"That feels a lot better! Thanks! It would have taken forever to heal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably only a couple days, but still, happy to help it along."

She stands up, and kicks the sprain healing and diagnosis powers out of their slots. Best to be prepared... and she has some thoughts on what more she wants.

Can she get in-depth medical knowledge as a power? And then... a sensing power for the healthiness and sustainability of her own body?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, it can do both of those!

Two new sparks bloom to life inside her. They really like each other. She gets the impression that they want to like her combined regeneration power, too, but can't merge with it right now because of ... balance?

Permalink Mark Unread

She bets she can merge them twice. Can she merge them twice?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup! The two first level sparks click together, and then the two second-level sparks. The result is a comprehensive power for sensing and understanding the current state of her body, visualizing in detail where she wants it to end up, and setting up a path from here to there.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is going to take some time and attention, but for the moment she can start with small experiments.

Firstly, she should be fitter and more perfect than she is. That's unlikely to break anything if she sticks to a humanly plausible degree of musculature. Not bodybuilder muscle, athlete's muscle. She wants to be built like someone who works for their body. Clear out all the little breakages in her body as well, improve her blood volume and pressure which has always been low for her height, fix her underbite, fix her myopia, and all the little injuries she's accumulated over her relatively short life. That much is easy.

Next, aesthetics. Broadening her hips, perfecting her face so it looks like the her in her heart, clearing away the hair follicles on her face that she has to keep shaving about, straightening her teeth. She'd like a couple more inches of height too. Naturally blue hair, of course. Sharpened canines, mostly for looks but she likes having fangs. She wants to take her time about designing her bioluminescent tattoos so they look right.

Now, to go on to transhumanism...

Well. Obviously her human senses are pitiful, compared to many creatures in the animal kingdom, but working on her senses while in the middle of an important conversation where that might blind or deafen her is a bad idea. So she'll start by optimizing her energy budget. First her digestion; the more energy she can get out of food, the better. She'll also photosynthesize in her skin, ideally with the C4 pathway but if she has to steal the adaptations of E. chlorotica that's fine. Once she's freed up some energy, it's time for an extra limb - let's say a prehensile tail, long and pigmented deep black with a nice little spade tip, she'll do some custom design there since it's necessary to parse as a nonhuman being and not some kind of mutant. She'll design in a retractable spike as well just in case.

If she's got the nerve-integration capabilities to handle a whole additional limb, then she'll move on to her tactile senses, starting with the fun regions. Sensitive tail-tip, sensitive cock, sensitive breasts, generally do a recreational upgrade. Fix up her hormonal balance a bit there too. Reinforce her nails and harden them, diamond if she can manage it, she's always wanted to have nails that can scratch metal.

And then... well. Once she's somewhere safe and comfortable she'll work on her eyes and ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those are all possible. The C4 photosynthesis is going to make her skin either green or black, depending on what she does with subsurface scattering. It also requires her to reformulate her blood's handling of dissolved CO2 for optimal bundle-sheath concentrations, which in turn has knock-on effects on her liver's handling of blood-gas toxcicity, and that impacts the decay rate of some biomarkers, and ...

Biology is complicated. She absolutely can get all this worked out, it just takes some fiddly design work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeeeeah this is going to take some doing. The necessary skin pigmentation she should've predicted, she'll try to go with black over green since that way it'll match her tail and is closer to a human skin color. Speaking of adaptations from things that are green she'd like a longer, retractable tongue too.

Doing her eyes and ears is going to be a bitch and a half at this speed of adjustment. She'll have to plan out a set of adjustments very carefully so as to give herself maximum functioning time.

Any dice on getting a subpower to speed this one up?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, it can do a power that speeds up regeneration for her specifically. Does she want that?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, she wants that. And something to predict knock-on effects in her biochemistry. And something to give her body lots of spare biochemical energy to draw on for the transformation. And hopefully two of those are mergeable so she can merge all this further.

Permalink Mark Unread

The gift spins for a moment, three new powers blooming within her. All three of them end up being compatible, actually, although the regeneration booster and the biology simulation power seem kind of dubious about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she threemerge them or does she have to go pairwise?

Assuming it's pairwise, she's going to start by shoving together the energy booster and the regeneration power first.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is, in fact, not pairwise! The three powers click together just as easily as before, forming a gestalt power that speeds up regeneration by supplying additional biochemical energy and extrapolating how the biology is going to adapt in response soas to anticipate future energy needs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sheeeee no longer has any idea how the merging works. She needs to figure that out.

Okay, back away slowly from the really cool accidental power, she is messing with stuff she does not understand. She'll keep applying her present changes but that's it for now.

The Flash perks up at the sound of an approaching siren.

"Oh, that's the police now — they're on the ball today. I'm going to go give a statement; hang tight."

And he's gone again, in a flash.

"So ... is December a nom héroïque —"

Girls like French. Well-known linguistic fact.

"— or did you want to pick an alias real fast before anyone starts mentioning your arrival?"
