"Angel, is that true?" Jean asks, because there is one person in this room who can't lie.

"No, summoner." The angel replies.

"Fuck you! I am going to summon you and never let you see the light of the day again!" The assistant says lunging for the angel's throat.

The angel doesn't even flinch.

Jean shoots the assistant in the shoulder, mostly just to get him away from the angel with the force of the bullet.

Apparently the gag doesn't prevent the angel to make shocked gasps.

The assistant falls down, the angel knees besides him looking meaningfully at Jean for a moment then away.

Jean takes two steps towards the assistant, puts his foot on the man's chest to press him down on his back on the ground.

"I'm going to kill you," he says, levelly. "I'm telling you this, first, so that you can be afraid."

"Fuck you!" the assistant says with some combination of utter terror and defiance, "You need me! He is going to kill you or worse!"

Felix can't even say any of the phrases in his vocabulary because none apply to the situation. He can't interpose himself between the two.

He does all that he is allowed to do, which is to watch and trying to be expressive with just his eyes. Don't kill him. You have just a short while. No one deserves that.

Jean laughs at the man.

Then he shoots him in the head.

...

Well, Felix will curl up in a feathery ball and cry.

A short, muscular woman comes in, glances between Jean and the angel, and escorts the victim out without a word, leaving them alone.

When she's gone and they're alone, Jean sits down on the floor as well.

"...I do apologize for rather forcing you into the bargain," he says, after a moment, "instead of asking for some nominal token in exchange for saving her life. I need information, and I was under time pressure to decide what to do. I'm not intending to interrogate you about anything personal."

The victim, mercifully or not, is still too out of it to have a reaction to anything besides looking around confused.

After a pause the angels says. "As you will, summoner."

"This ... gag ... is irritating. I don't prefer to be unable to hold a conversation with people. Have you got a name, can you tell it to me, and if so, what is it?"

Felix pauses.

"Yes, summoner. " He finally says, because he does in fact have a name, which he can't tell to the summoner now but definitely could and would even be willing to so, so either "yes" or "no" could fit but not properly. And of course the third question can't be answered at all so Felix doesn't even try.

"...does posing multiple questions at once prevent you from answering more than one of them?"

"No, summoner." But he tries to convey a degree of uncertainty to this answer. Then he breaks eye-contact and looks downwards.

"Hmm. That thing where you look down, the other one did that, too. It doesn't look quite comfortable. ... This would be easier if I could get better responses than 'yes' or 'no' ... Would you like me to try to come up with something besides 'angel' to call you?"

Felix thinks, he notices that his capacity to react to summoner requests with reactions others than "whatever will cause the least harm" is quite rusty.

"As you will, summoner."

His eyes don't leave the floor, he doesn't consider raising them up.

Sigh. "I will stick with it for the moment, then. This entire arrangement is deeply uncomfortable, but I am afraid comfort is not a luxury I can allow either of us just now. Is there an easier way for me to find out your capabilities than trying to guess them and get yesses and nos from you?"

Ouch, that is a hard one. He is explicitly forbidden of communicating the ways by which summoning works or contrive to do so. He also can't lie to his summoner. And he can't even be sure this summoner can be trusted.

This all leads to Felix looking up and make brief eye-contact, but without saying anything.

Sigh.

"Okay. I am sorry to just ask these questions, but with restricted communication like this I must be blunt. Are you trying to cooperate with me?"

He tenses at the word "blunt", but relaxes when he processes the rest. "Yes, summoner."

"I do appreciate that."

"By your best estimation, would the results if I were to snap your binding, if I knew them now, be something I would approve of?"

Felix thinks... He wouldn't hurt this summoner and would forthcoming with information if only because that ought to be easier on both parties. Felix would gladly heal people and help the many people he gave magical plastic surgery, those could be aligned with this summoner's goals.

But on the other hand, Felix wouldn't want the summoner to kill more people, no matter how evil they were. It might not come up, but also it might come up. And as far Felix knows this guy could just start using angels for personal gain, there are several stories of greedy new summoners who lose their morals in the face of new power.

Another brief eye-contact without a reply.

"I have been assuming that when you don't answer, it's because neither 'yes, summoner' nor 'no, summoner' would fit the criteria of being truthful, not misleading, and so forth. Is that assumption correct?"
