Felix takes the summon immediately, of course he takes the summon immediately, nothing scares him more than the possibility of taking too long. One moment he is in heaven and crying on Dawn's shoulder, but the next...

...He is summoned straight to the operating room, his summoner tells him what he is going to do and in exchange he is going to get thirty minutes. That is less than before and Felix can hear the summoner pleased snort when Felix replies "yes, summoner."

The last time he didn't take the deal, Felix was sent back for two days. He is still not sure if the summoner was looking for someone else or trying to make a point.

The summoner gives him a picture, "turn the bitch into this." Felix takes the picture without looking the summoner in the eyes even once.

Only after the summoner is out of the room does Felix gather enough courage to move. He leaves the circle and starts working on changing the woman's appearance. He doesn't wonder if the woman is a client or a victim, knowing doesn't help.

Jean does not like the stories about this ... man.

He does not like how much money he apparently has to throw around.

He really, really does not like the fact that he can't seem to track down two consistent stories about him that don't involve the supernatural.

Hence, the fact that he is currently holding a gun to the man's head, and suggesting that he explain himself very clearly and succinctly, the first time.

The man tries to bribe his way out of the situation by offering increasingly larger and more ludicrous amounts of gold. What is even weirder is how he looks honest about those offers (even a bit smug).

Felix is in the middle of the surgery when the summoner's assistant barges in. The assistant nervously pulls Felix out of the room and all Felix can do is a couple of changes so the woman doesn't die immediately, but she won't hold for long...

...the assistant explains that the boss is being held at gunpoint and Felix is supposed to do something about it "or else".

The assistant "or else" is vastly inferior to his boss, it's frightens Felix enough that he doesn't put any resistance and is pushed into the room where the summoner yes.

That is certainly a winged man, isn't it? He walks towards Jean and the summoner, slowly.

Jean is currently laughing his head off, viciously, at the man's attempts at bribery.

The winged man is ... consistent with the results he's seen in the past. Nevertheless: impressive.

"Don't come any closer," he warns, dropping the laughter like a ton of bricks. "Whatever he has on you is about to cease to be relevant. And I do not prefer to shoot you, but I will."

Felix keeps walking very slowly, like he is afraid of going too slow, but also unwilling to go any faster.

"Take three more steps and I shoot your kneecap," Jean informs him. "And then yours, to make myself feel better," he adds to the other man. "So if I were you, and I had a way to get him to stop, I would use it."

Tears start welling up in his eyes. Felix wipes then away. He is allowed to do that because it would interfere with the goal of keeping the summoner safe...

He pauses for a moment, because taking three steps could lead to the summoner being hurt... except, a kneecap can be healed, while a shot head can't.

Felix takes the third step.

"I do apologize," Jean says, to the winged man, and then shoots his kneecap and the other man's in rapid succession.

"The next one will be fatal," he adds, still to the winged man. "I will make it quick. And then--" to the other "--I will give up on this being a no-kill operation, which is extremely bad news for you. And yours will not be quick. Make him stop."

Felix wobbles, because while he can only be hurt to a certain point, bullets still have a nasty kick to it. But he still moves forward."

"Fuck! Son of a bitch!" hisses the summoner, "I am going to fucking kill you. Angel, your brother for anesthesia-"

"Yessummoner." Felix says quickly, accepting the new deal before the summoner can clarify the target.

The summoner flops to the ground completely anesthetized. Felix halts, but still advances to interpose himself between Jean and the summoner.

Well he has a lot of questions now.

Jean takes several steps back. And disguises a tap to his phone as part of the motion. He really needs some backup.

Felix makes an effort to meet Jean's eyes, the looks away again. Then Felix looks up at Jean's eyes again, more intently and turns around in a way that conveys follow me.

...tap tap.

Follow.

It's a short walk, Felix leads him to a room... with a door that appears to be a solid sheet of metal, until it suddenly changes and melts away. Felix gets inside the room...

There is a naked angel inside the room, identical to Felix in every way except the wings. He looks up at Jean for a brief moment then at Felix. They hug.

There is a elaborate circle with what appears to be words in some ancient language. The second angel is sitting right in the middle of it.

"...curiouser and curiouser," Jean murmurs. "I don't suppose you can explain what's going on to me," he adds to the other ... angel?

Ferdinand looks up at him... not exactly tired, but like someone unwilling to expend whatever effort it would take to answer that question.

He looks down, something about the movement makes it appear rehearsed instead of a spontaneous show of emotion. "I can't do that."

Felix is still hugging Ferdinand, and crying quietly.

"...will it cause either of you substantial inconvenience if the man in the next room ceases to be a threat to anyone."

Ferdinand smile pretty much says "please, go ahead."

But Felix jerks away from the hug. He stands up and walks out of the room as fast as his legs can take him, he looks back at Jean but doesn't wait for him to follow.

Hmm.

But the other one was hugging him. And the other one is still smiling.

Tap. Tap tap tap.

"You know," Jean calls after the first -- angel -- "I still have this gun. How sure are you there's not another route into that room?"

Felix freezes.

Okay, he tries to reason with this bind and comes up with the notion that the summoner will be safer if Felix can keep the man with a gun on his sight and away from the summoner, doing what Felix was going to do now is totally a valid way to keep Jean occupied for the sake of the summoner.

Felix turns around, gives him the same meaningful follow me look and leads Jean to the operation room (which is not that far). He wants to save his... patient.

Instead he and Jean find the summoner's assistant, using per-printed circles and trying desperately to get an angel.

It won't work, those are specific-summon circles and Felix is already here.

"How protective do you feel of this one?" Jean asks the angel.

(Tap.)

"Don't kill me! Please!" The assistant begs falling to his knees. "I-I can tell you all his secrets! How everything works! You can be rich! Have the power of gods!"

Felix approaches the woman on the operating table and...

...nothing happens, and nothing happens because he is bound by the new deal and can't help. She is going to die. She is going to die and it's all Felix fault because he was selfish and wanted to find a way out for his brother, they both have forever, and humans have just a few precious decades. Felix collapses sobbing.

Jean ignores the sobbing angel (there has been a lot of that in the last ten minutes, all right) and rolls his eyes at the assistant. "I am not particularly inclined to kill you, if you cooperate. Start by giving me a summary of what is going on with these -- angels -- in the next sixty seconds."

"These circles are magical! They allow you to summon angels or demons and you can make deals with them. The boss..." the assistant says nervously, "he used them to score easy money... Uh, I think she is going to die."

The assistant points at the woman in the operating table. It was probably meant as a distraction, a very poorly executed distraction.

"Don't... don't kill me. You-you can kill the boss! The angels will go away and you can get them back to fix the woman! You can even get that as your end of the bargain! Get them to make gold or diamonds for yourself!"

At that, Felix looks up looking... something that shares similar aspects to the emotional state described as "hopeful".
