"Mmhmm."

"So you do - people stuff?"

"Yes. Diplomacy, networking, and some social engineering, usually, though I have occasional forays into other parts of the field."

Nod. "I don't - know enough about that stuff to ask questions about it, mostly."

"It is a complex field; as much as programming, perhaps, in its own way."

She nods, self-dismissively. "Fair. Most things seem simple when you don't know much about them."

Xiulan chuckles. "And then you learn a some about it and you suddenly realize how little you know?"

"Mmhmm. At least it's usually a good sign."

"Howso?"

"That you're finally getting an idea of the scope of the thing."

"Ah! Yes, although subfields and the like may remain unexplored."

"But at least noticed, generally."

"Hopefully, yes."

"So, even if you can't explain the technical parts, I bet you have some interesting stories?"

"Oh, certainly. Of the ones I can talk about..."

She tells the story of an amusing translator bug, and the process of de-confusing and soothing all parties (which she carefully does not name.)

And Dusk makes a good audience, with oh noes and then whats and good jobs in all the right places, and then starts in on a story that that reminds her of, of a supposed fabber bug that she spent months trying to track down and turned out to be a miscommunication between the guy reporting the bug and the girl he was getting his blueprints from.

Xiulan clearly appreciates having a good audience.

When Dusk tells her story, Xiulan listens in turn, mostly in fascinated silence, but with backchannel responses where appropriate.

"...but that's the nice thing about a reputation economy, at least, I still got credit for it. Helped me get those two." She nods at the cats.

"Yes, that is an advantage of a rep economy," she replies thoughtfully. "Personally, I prefer a hybrid; they both have their advantages, and it can be useful to be able to use either or both."

"Mmhmm. I'm not fond of the extra complication, but it does have its advantages."

"...I can see how it would be an extra complication," she replies thoughtfully.

"Yeah, I prefer it when social stuff is - simple, fewer moving parts." Shrug. "I'll cope, anyway."

"You are doing quite well," Xiulan says, "perhaps especially for someone who just had to leave almost everything to run from a major hypercorp."

"Yeah." A wry grin. "I don't expect that to ever stop being part of my life, really. Makes it easier, at least in some ways."

"It tends to," she agrees.

"Yeah. One of the things I need to decide, in the next while, is if I want to settle down that much - I wasn't quite intending to, last time, it just sort of happened. And went well, but," shrug. "It'll be different, choosing to."
