I'm sorry I put this at your feet
Vader and Luke are unsure who has kidnapped whom
Permalink Mark Unread

The Hutt that Luke and his squadron had been sent to take out was burrowed into the ground, as they tended to do, and was directly under the support settlement it needed to let it live it's life of disgusting greed.  Luke's orders had been clear- he and the other 3 TIE fighters in his squadron were to guard the 5 bombers, who were to bomb the entire settlement from above, heavily enough to take out the compound below, and some of the stormtroopers would come in after them and kill off any of the gangsters that had survived the initial bombing.

The settlement came into view as they rounded the planet, dropping lower as they approached.  Luke fired on the east guardtower, ordering the other TIE pilots to take out the others, and the bombers began to move into position above the settlement.  As he scanned the settlement again for further defenses, his eyes caught on the civilians fearfully running for cover- and the slaves, glancing around, uncertain.  These were no enemies of the Empire, no destroyers of peace and stability.  A rush of anger surged through him.  Did they really expect him to order his men to bomb innocent civilians? Slaves?  There had to be some way to do this with less casualties- sending stormtroopers into the base to flush the Hutt out would probably work!

He wasn't going to let this happen.  Almost without thinking, he surged into action, spinning his TIE fighter to face the bombers and beginning to fire.  He knew the ships his squadron flew, even if he didn't fly the bombers- he knew every weakness in the ships.  Taking them down was easy, the other TIEs taking a moment to move into action against him, two of the five bombers already falling to the ground below by the time the first of the other TIE pilots had moved into action.

There is, a few settlements over - in the forces moving against the leader of the most recent Hutt clan to renege on a deal with the Empire - the distinct sound of a helmetted forehead hitting a gauntleted palm.

Vader screws up communications between squads - and especially outgoing communications - with an idle wave of her hand, orders her own people to intensify their suppressing fire (this particular slug, actually expecting to be ever attacked, hasn't done anything nearly as stupid as putting his vital support structures unshielded over top of his underground base, and actually has a decent ability to resist attacks, especially with the fighters from other compounds in the clan providing back up).

She comms Luke's fighter. "First Lieutenant Miyer, what is the meaning of this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shit.  Luke did not at all expect Darth Vader herself to comm him over this.  How did she even know?  He continues to fire on the bombers as he replies.

"We're facing unexpected resistance from the Hutt compound, Sir."

He's not a good liar but it will have to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were not a Hutt last I checked, Lieutenant Miyer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shit shit shit shit- that's the last of the TIE fighters, falling to the ground now, Luke is barely even noticing the fighting now- he doesn't know how to fix this.  He needs to run.  He needs to stop this.  Are other squadrons doing this?  He needs to find the other settlements and stop this.

He needs to respond to Vader.

"Are you implying that I shot down my own squadron, Sir?"

This is why he doesn't lie, he's no good at it.

He doesn't notice that his course has changed to take him towards Vader instead of towards the next settlement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that what's happened, Lieutenant?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke does not have even the slightest idea what is happening or what Vader knows.  He's doesn't have any idea what he's doing but- they were supposed to be taking out Hutts, not civilians. Not slaves.

"Uh, no, Sir?"

He didn't mean for it to sound like a question, but it seems like it did anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find I somehow doubt that, Lieutenant."

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke catches sight of another small compound on his left, with a squadron the size of his own beginning to circle it.  He turns away from his previous path, barely wondering why he hadn't been headed straight towards it, and flips his ships comm unit off, deciding that Vader has already seen through his limited ability to lie.

He flies in as though he's providing backup, at first, getting well within range before beginning to fire on the bombers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teenagers.

There actually seems to be a lot of chaos blooming among the ranks of the Imperials, actually, an escalating clusterfuck (that still gets the central Hutt and anyone capable of seizing control of the clan killed, Vader is annoyed but not going to abandon this opportunity) - that culminates in Vader's own TIE whipping alongside Luke's, and the switch on Luke's comm unit moving itself back to 'on.'

"You will land, Lieutenant Miyer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke finally has to admit to himself that he can see no way out of this one.  He pulls away from the settlement and lands his TIE fighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader lands nearby, the hatch of her own TIE hissing open.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very reluctantly, Luke opens his TIE fighter and climbs out, standing at attention to the side of it, as he would before or after a mission.

Permalink Mark Unread

Out comes Vader.

...And sweeps past him, toward an outlying part of the settlement. "Follow me."

Permalink Mark Unread

What.

Luke follows her, after a moment, still confused.

"Sir? Where are you taking me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

A moment, then - "That ship."

'That ship' appears to belong to the Hutts; a fast, small ship likely used for messengers - it has weapons, probably, but no one managed to get to it before the fighting got too hot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke nods uncertainly.  Is Vader not arresting him?  Maybe Vader just doesn't want to give him a chance to fly off, so she's putting him in a ship with her?
He follows Vader to the ship anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

A lot of the other Imperial forces seem to be very mysteriously exploding, actually, just going by the chaos and explosions on the horizon - and their TIE fighters both rise into the air behind them, before suddenly sustaining damage and explosions very consistent with having been shot down - Vader's careening farther from the Hutt compound.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke stares in confusion.  Probably he shouldn't question Lord Vader about what's happening.  He stops staying behind Vader and hurries to the indicated ship, half-hoping to get to the pilots seat before her.

Permalink Mark Unread

...He does!

Vader doesn't exactly walk very quickly in this suit.

Permalink Mark Unread

He quickly begins to familiarize himself with the ships controls, getting it started up and ready to take off.  He has no idea where he's going to take them, besides away from this planet and away from the Empire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader is fully willing to give him instructions about this!

She's... Ordering them towards a much larger settlement? Seems to have a spaceport. Though she wants him to take a route that'll make it non-obvious where they came from, and also to move quickly.

Well, if they're getting off planet - this ship doesn't exactly seem designed for hyperspace, though it should be able to operate even out of atmo.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll co-operate with her orders for now, at least- he doesn't actually want to pick a fight with Lord Vader, even if he was about to run from the Empire in a stolen ship with her in it.  It seems like he might be doing that anyway?  He keeps wondering if she's defecting with him, even though that's absurd and impossible.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has him land on the outskirts. "Head towards the spaceport," she instructs. "We are looking for a fast hyperspace capable ship. Not Hutt owned, not clearly affiliated with any faction. I will instruct you further if needed."

And - she's suddenly much harder to see, a struggle to remember she's there or even ever was there. Luke can manage it, though, even if it gives him a headache.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke pulls off his helmet, tucking it under his arm and doing his best to hide the details as he heads towards the spaceport, doing his best to hide that he's looking at all the ships while still taking the time to check them all over- at least, the ones that are small enough to be manned with a crew of two.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Nobody seems at all suspicious of him, weirdly.)

- And there's one. He has a good feeling about it. Looks old, worn, of a type favored by smugglers (there's a lot of smugglers' ships in this port).

Still, Vader seems to have the same good feeling, because she pauses, examining it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sir? I think this one looks good, and it doesn't look like it belongs to the Hutts." He says in a quiet voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps up next to him, nodding. "It does."

"Find out who the pilot is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke circles the ship, looking for any sign of the owner, or who they might be.  If there's nothing to be found outside, he'll try and break in.

Permalink Mark Unread

-There's someone, half-buried inside an access panel on the outside of the ship, presumably in the middle of doing a tune-up of some kind. Unclear whether he's the pilot, but he sure seems to be affiliated with the ship somehow. Either that or he's a very bold thief.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you the owner of this ship?" Luke calls up at him, when he sees him.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a quiet thunk as he starts and hits his head on something inside, "Kriffin-" he pulls his upper body and head out of the access panel, revealing his very greasy self to the world, "Who's asking?" He calls back, rubbing at his head with a cloth-filled hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone who needs a ride!" he shouts up at the man, sounding slightly annoyed.

Permalink Mark Unread

He drops his hand and squints down at the source of the voice, taking in the imperial pilot uniform and scoffing, "Yeah, you and everyone else on this rock, and whose fault is that?" Not that he blames the kid for wanting to get the hell off this dirtball if he's lost his fighter somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe," intones a deep, mechanical voice, suddenly looming out of the shadows - seeming somehow taller than Han, despite the way she's looking up at him, "That the Lieutenant asked you for a ride."

Permalink Mark Unread

-he drops the rag right out of his hand, and almost drops himself right off the side of the ship, catching himself at the last second, all the while making a noise like a small animal being stepped on.

WHY is Darth Vader here?!?!

"Uh-" his eyes dart between the two of them, wide and wild, his now free hand automatically going to his blaster before he redirects it at the last second to his hip.

"-Uh, yes, your Lordship? Sir?" Kriff this is not how he was expecting to go. "Uh, we're in the middle of some... maintenance..." Else they'd already be off this karking planet and and he wouldn't be dealing with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head, reaching out with the Force.

Then: "The maintenance can be swiftly concluded."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, yep, yeah it sure can. If you wanna just head inside and, uh, make yourself comfortable, kid- Lieutenant," he corrects himself, eyeing Vader with a look that is perhaps best summed up as 'wary', though that's definitely understating the intensity of the emotion.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," He replies, and heads into the ship, walking around to look at it before settling down, though he tries not to look into any especially private areas, mostly just trying to get a feel for the layout.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty simple layout. Cargo space, small med bay, central area with a kitchen, table, and lounging area, 'fresher, cockpit. There are all manner of hideyholes, too, typical of a smuggler's vessel, only some of which he can spot on the way through.

Permalink Mark Unread

And one wookie! Who turns from where he's digging into an open panel in the wall, then asks who Luke is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A passenger?" Shit, why did that come out sounding questioning. "The guy outside agreed to take me offplanet once the repairs get finished."

Permalink Mark Unread

Agreeable noise, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case he'll just continue, and when he's finished walking through the ship, he heads back towards the entry to try and overhear what the man outside and Darth Vader are saying.

Permalink Mark Unread

...well, he doesn't have any trouble overhearing them.

"-woah, no, no, no, don't touch that, it's delicate! We don't have time to replace it if you kark it up!" The man's shout is clearly audible as soon as Luke gets into earshot. Apparently he's forgotten his fear already.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I assure you, I know what I am doing. Your ship is not so complicated."

Luke has never heard Vader's mechanical voice so dryly sarcastic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not so complicated, she says," Han seems to be matching her sarcasm for sarcasm, at least. "Compared to an imperial ship she is! Just, let me-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might notice I am older than many imperial ships." Her tone could desertify a planet. She does not appear to be moving out of the way, and, in fact, the next thing that spills from her mouth is engineering talk.

...She knows a lot about ships.

Permalink Mark Unread

"For all I know you inherited the suit, maybe there's a parade of different Vaders going around under that getup," he... well, doesn't quite mutter, it's a little loud to be called a mutter. Still, once she starts talking engineering he stops the majority of his complaining and starts engaging in the same.

He knows... maybe a little less about ships. Not that you could get him to admit it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She... Is, actually, listening to him once he stops yelling. (She's still right, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He waits by the entryway for them to finish up with the repairs, and once they seem to have reached the end of the repairs, pokes his head out.

"Are we ready to leave?"

Something about hearing Vader argue about ships with a random pilot seems to have calmed him, some.

"And can I know where we're going, from here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns away from Han, definitely not in a huff. "I will be entering the coordinates."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh really? Why don't you just take over the piloting too while you're at it, just make yourself right at home!" He calls after her, half-distracted by squinting into the access panel.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

He jerks away to yell at her back, "That was not an actual suggestion! -oh hey, kid. Lieutenant." He frowns at Luke, and then turns to close up the panel he was looking at, before striding up into the ship after the Emperor's Right Hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke follows behind them, doing his best to get a glimpse at the co-ordinates Vader enters.

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't doing much to hide them. Looks - imperial space, probably, though not frequented.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke hasn't quite lost his nerve yet- Vader didn't kill, or torture, the pilot of this ship, even though they could have stolen it from him afterwards perfectly fine.

"This doesn't seem like how being arrested for treason goes. Sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, neither of us has been arrested yet," she says.

...Her voice is flat but Luke is pretty sure she's amused.

Permalink Mark Unread

He settles down in the co-pilots seat.

"Why didn't you arrest me?  Or just shoot me down, for that matter?  I'm not the first TIE squadron commander to defect in battle."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances back towards Han.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is no Han apparent - he's somewhere near the back of the ship, around the engines, with the other presence aboard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I knew your biological mother," she says, stiffly, after a rather long pause.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd you figure that out?  i don't even know her name, I didn't think it was on any paperwork."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Many things can be sensed in the Force, including identity and in some cases relation. But I - met you, as an infant. You feel the same, still."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It must be cool, to be able to just sense things like that.  Were you... close to my biological mother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her posture and tone of voice stay the same. They're mechanical. Forcibly even.

"Yes," she says, and there's a world of pain in that word.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke is not oblivious enough to fail to notice that Vader would probably like to drop this topic.

"Well, thanks for helping me out.  Uh, it seems like you have some sort of plan, so, tell me how I can help with that and I'll do my best."

He pauses.

"I don't consider the... situation... that I just... caused... to be my best." he says, a bit awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her breath rasps for a bit, then: "Turning points in life are rarely our best moments."

"My plan is still formulating."

"How well can you lie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He thinks about it for a moment.

"Well, I can lie alright if I've got it pre-planned but I'm terrible at coming up with lies on the spot, and I've never tried to lie to anyone who was specifically on the lookout for lies."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod, and there's a considering air about her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, uh, I guess I'll leave you here to figure out the plan?  And probably go try to talk to the guy who's ship this is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awkward stiff nod. "You are dismissed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke heads down towards the engines to look for the pilot.

Permalink Mark Unread

He finds the pilot just outside the engine room, grumbling mostly-wordlessly to himself while he pokes around in a panel there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything I could be helping with, since we seem to be commandeering your ship?" he asks when he sees the pilot.

Permalink Mark Unread

He turns without bumping his head this time, "No," he points his hydrospanner at Luke, "Don't touch anything. This is all," he waves up at the ceiling, "Delicate stuff. I might be forced to admit that madwoman might know what she's doing, but I'm not letting anyone else poke around in my ship's insides."
