Silvers and Salmons in Inlustrem
Permalink Mark Unread

Accompanied/led by the mini-jellyfish, they return to the submarine and share their discoveries with the rest of the crew. All of it's fascinating, none of it's actually actionable, and it all only makes it more important that the Feds never get their little dictatorial hands on this system's resources.

When they emerge from the little Perception bubble, the mini-jellyfish contact the larger jellyfish topside, and get confirmation that these strange bipedal aliens are in fact friendly with whatever may be called this planet's "government." Not that this was strictly necessary, given that the safety protocols wouldn't really have a way to stop them, but it's always good to avoid unnecessarily burning bridges.

By the time they reach the surface, the Fed ship with Temperance's half-brother is closer to the planet, but will still take a few days to arrive.

Permalink Mark Unread

And what is the best way to spend these next two days?

Permalink Mark Unread

Continuing to build things...

...and planning. They do very much still need a plan that's not just "stay here and hope for the best" with a side of "mind-attack everyone who gets anywhere close."

Permalink Mark Unread

Building things is important. But how about further exploration of the mysterious ruins? Ideally before two days come to pass.

Permalink Mark Unread

Was there anything more they needed to explore there?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, there is a vast complex of spatially distorted structures in there. Who knows what they could find? Or the magic principles that they could rediscover?

Permalink Mark Unread

Can't they get that information from the little not-quite-sapient protocols in there, instead of going exploring?

Permalink Mark Unread

That could work too.

(Temperance really wanted to explore the ancient magical ruins.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, well, kid, unless the ancient magical ruins have lots of resources they can actually use they're a curiosity at best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance keeps contributing to the good of the colony.

Permalink Mark Unread

So does Isra.

Permalink Mark Unread

Contributing's fine, but they still need a plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

They mentioned a portal down there...

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly just one of the many interesting things they can find.

Permalink Mark Unread

But following the aboleths sounds like a terrible idea. Granted, they could aim the portal to somewhere else. Assuming they could find somewhere habitable to escape.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why, terrible idea?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, what are the odds that they would gladly welcome with open tentacles the weird aliens from the home planet that they wrote off as doomed? Why risk when they can just shoot everything that goes through the portal?

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes sense.

But they don't really know how to even make portals like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

True, and people should go research that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance is totally going to be part of the team that is going to research the ruins themselves for important clues, that is totally thing they could and should do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, but that's a resource and they need an actual plan before committing to getting it. Are they fleeing the system with the flayers? No grand stand against their tyrannical fist?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, maybe they have weapons down there? Or war-based applications for portals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it safe for the Federation to know that kind of magic is even possible? She guesses if they evacuate they could pretend some weird accident killed everyone and destroyed all the new mysterious magic...?

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a possible solution, what with everyone thinking the flayers are actually evil and terribly powerful.

Permalink Mark Unread

It all depends on what they can find and salvage from both the not-quite-sapient protocols and the ruins, though. How are the efforts with the former going?

Permalink Mark Unread

They're mostly not. Protocols are still behind the Perception barrier, and after the mini-flayers contacted the main population and reported back, nothing new happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well... shouldn't they send a second expedition then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. Yes. They should.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Yay!)

That sounds like a great tactical decision. Is everyone that came before coming this time around too?

Permalink Mark Unread

It might not be a reasonable idea to waste that many people there now that they know what's there and how to deal with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough. Temperance will volunteer though.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does the resident Airist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, not everyone is that willing to go back down there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde is indecisive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra hugs him. "It is entirely reasonable not wanting to come after the last time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, but—it's not quite that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnnot sure it's the best thing I could be doing with my time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, I see," Isra squeezes. "Do you want help deciding then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, what would the alternatives and the desires behind them be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Going down there, desire being mainly—well, being with you, let's get that out there—and curiosity? And staying here—strategising, helping plan and organise resources."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw." Isra nuzzles Sadde's neck. "Well, can you guess the weight of each impulse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty evenly matched? But—I think the latter is probably what's. Erm. Objectively better for me to be doing. Curiosity is a purely, er... selfish desire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doing things for your own sake doesn't have to carry the negative connotations of the word selfish. See how I'm here with you instead of back home. One could argue there are selfish elements to following a safe path."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I mean, it's selfish in that it's just about me. I won't be aggregating anything, by going with my curiosity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think the contribution that you would provide is significant enough that you can't indulge your curiosity?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yeah, actually, I'm pretty good at strategy and plans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And after thinking about these things, what do you want to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want," he says, and blushes a bit, "to have sex with you and then stay here and strategise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I approve of this decision!" Isra says kissing Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then! Kiss!

Do we have time though? he sends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, I don't mind being interrupted. Beats the alternative of not having sex with you right now in the first place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well it'd be—half-sex, not an entire sex.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, if you want we can just stay here and snuggle, without sex too.

Permalink Mark Unread

...nah let's do each other.

And thankfully they're already kissing in his "room" so he can start undressing this adorable tailed person.

Permalink Mark Unread

And his tailed person can undress Sadde in return!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde is continually fascinated by Isra's body. His kisses are... much less tentative than they were when the two of them first started this, exploring all of Isra's body with hunger.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he? In all this exploration is there a favorite part?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. This one here, which he will use his mouth to appreciate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra likes Sadde's appreciation, so much that he wants to reciprocate in kind.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is welcome to do so!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmm, reciprocation.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are, however, interrupted before getting very far into the reciprocation.

The team is getting ready to leave, which of you's going?

Permalink Mark Unread

I am! Just give me a second to put my clothes on! Isra sends interrupting the reciprocation.

Permalink Mark Unread

I'll stay, he says, blushing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do you two ever stop touching? she laughs. Team'll be waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra kisses Sadde goodbye and meets up with the team.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dr. Kei is there, as well as a smaller crew than before.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the small crew still includes Temperance.

Permalink Mark Unread

That it does! And when Isra arrives they are all ready to depart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool, any incident during the journey downwards?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope. Everything goes just alright, and then they're through the Perception barrier.

...stuff is different.

Permalink Mark Unread

Different how?

Permalink Mark Unread

For one, there seems to be a flurry of activity the Navs can pick up on, and then everyone else once they're close enough: the mini-flayers are running this way and that through the structure, merging in pairs and trios before separating and taking whatever information they'd gotten to their destinations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has any of those got in contact with the submarine?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope. Zip and zoom this way and that.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if she tries to communicate with them?

Permalink Mark Unread

They will communicate back! It's what they're for, an interface.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay.

Why is everything so active all the sudden?

Permalink Mark Unread

The Anti-Extinction Protocols have been reactivated based on information from the surface and measures need to be taken to ensure the continued survival of the world's population.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, right. What are those measures?

Permalink Mark Unread

Building decision trees about what to do depending on this threat's capabilities, inventorying and gathering resources, obtaining more information, activating old enchantments, booting up servers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, we're actually here to figure out ways to help with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

What resources do you have access to?

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance contacts Dr. Kei about this question.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lists the kinds of magic they have specialists for on hand, as well as the systems already installed on their ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

The mini-flayers start spreading this information around.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool, do the mini-flayers have information that they can share with this expedition?

Permalink Mark Unread

They have access to various spells and enchantments the expedition may not have discovered yet, according to what the population at the surface has communicated them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool, what about the space-distorning magic and the portal?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, some of the enchantments registered are space magic that they can probably use.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cooler, Temperance will start researching space magic and the portal right away. How hard it would be to make it useful?

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite. It's absolutely incomprehensible.

Permalink Mark Unread

And what is causing this incomprehensibility?

Permalink Mark Unread

The fact that it's unlike any other enchantments she's ever seen, makes references to dozens of different concepts and runes at the same time, and is bizarrely complex and interwoven.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is there an indication this complexity is something that only one of the starfish aliens could've understood? Or can Temperance work hard and believe in herself until she manages it?

Permalink Mark Unread

She can definitely understand it if she studies it a lot.

For like a few weeks, maybe months.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is barely any time at all!

Permalink Mark Unread

...they do kinda have a potential war...

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, right, priorities. Are the flayers capable of using or altering those enchantments?

Permalink Mark Unread

The ones down here are not sapient, and are themselves merely enchantments, so they cannot do magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Have they tried to get help from the larger flayers?

Permalink Mark Unread

...that question does not make a lot of sense. They are not sapient. They are computer programs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She meant the surface population, they can totally do magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those perhaps could, but the way they do magic is also different.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, Temperance will do more research and try to compliment the mini-flayers efforts to inventory their resources, at least until she finds something more interesting to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

More interesting like what?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ideally, magical principles that they (or the Feds) wouldn't know about and that could be implemented right away.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first part exists, the second, not so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Temperance will keep searching and help as she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

By the time she needs to return to the surface, she will have found a lovely array of new magic that no one ever managed before to her knowledge, all of it taking a long time to be understood and implemented.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, this is a long term mission, isn't it? Still, Temperance will talk with the other mages and figure out which things they should prioritize.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Captain would like a report.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which Temperance provides.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would seem that you were right," she admits only somewhat reluctantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, nothing immediately useful, but we should take a look regardless... I was wondering if we could leverage some trades with the Feds using this, but it's probably not feasible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they figure they can overwhelm us with force they'll do it. It's unlikely trading will be on their mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "What do you want me to do now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly figure out how their incredible magic works over the next few months so we can use it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance actually bounces, then stops herself. "Thank you. I will give my best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will need somewhat continual status reports, though, so figuring out a way to lift the perception bubble underwater or bring its content outside would be desirable."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "I will talk to the mini-flayers and see what is more manageable. I do think I've collected enough to come up with plans of attack no matter their answer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad to hear it. How about the others that went with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh... I think I was a bit too distracted with all the new shiny magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. I will call them, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Assuming that was a dismissal, Temperance goes away.

Permalink Mark Unread

She calls Isra next.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here is Isra!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please report."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mainly mapped the facility, the place's topography is very weird but conditions there are stable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has it changed at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not. I talked with the mini-flayers, they can't map the place as well as I do but they perceive the whole of it. The thing is growing, but on a scale of noticeable changes taking years to showing up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Anything else you think would be relevant to report?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shake. "No, is there anything else I can do for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so. Go play with pretty boy. Or, pretty girl, today, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will! Thanks!"

And Isra goes to find pretty genderfluid.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty genderfluid is in a room surrounded by papers reading a document intently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I distract you for a moment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up. "Oh, hi, you're back! Yeah, what's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing dangerous happened during the expedition. Temperance is going to research a ton of lost knowledge. Which I only know about because she was muttering excitedly about it to herself the whole trip up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well that's sorta adorable," she grins. "And I kinda wanna help but I'm also helping the Captain with strategy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Temperance is really adorable about magic. I am curious myself, but I would only slow her down. How is the strategy going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Frustratingly. Feds have a lot of power to throw at—everything, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. "I know. On the other hand, we are sitting on a planet that is several kinds of impossible."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! "Yeah. I'm gonna need Temperance's report, if there's new magic. Figure out what and how we can deploy it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is probably working on it right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, I wonder if I should go poke her about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think she would've taken a break to eat something before going back to work. Granted, she was really excited about magic discoveries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant stay around her while she does stuff so I can get the information on new magic firsthand." She pets Isra's tail.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra's tail remains fluffy and reacts positively to the petting. "Oooh, yes, and you can update the strategy plans as needed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'd rely strictly on mental communication but I don't think I trust her not to get so absorbed in her magic she neglects to respond," she says, grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sound about right. Snuggle. "I know what it is like to be completely absorbed in things you love."

Permalink Mark Unread

She opens her mouth to reply before the words catch up with her brain and she stops and turns red and closes her mouth and squirms a bit. "I love you, too," she murmurs, looking down at her legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra kisses her forehead and raises her chin to kiss her lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah okay shyness time over she wants him. She wraps her arms around his neck and returns the kiss hungrily.

I missed you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. Missed you too, maybe next trip you could come.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe. I'm not sure, though, I still have a lot to do here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. I love you.

Permalink Mark Unread

I love you too, she sighs. And we should use this time we're both here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tail snuggle. I would love to do that. The kissing didn't stop, but Isra gives her a longer one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep she's all in favour of longer kisses. She's also in favour of shirtless Isra.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is she in favor of naked Isra?

Permalink Mark Unread

Heavens, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she will get a naked Isra!

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra's disdain for clothing is so good, she's very in favour of it. So many more places to kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, because Isra likes to be kissed. He wouldn't mind returning the favor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh but that'd require her to get undressed, too. Would he help her with that, please and thank you?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a pleasure to help! Look how much of a pleasure Isra has while removing Sadde's shirt and kissing the exposed skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes those are very good places to kiss, she approves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe he should remove more clothing articles and kiss the expanded skin area?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, please and thank you!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde is so very welcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is so very a large number of things, most of them involving Isra. She is also quite happy she gets to have a larger bed here, her apartment on the ship was tiny. They can use a lot more space now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, Isra wants Sadde to be comfortable and some other things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. She is all that. And then they snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggles!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you," she sighs, squirming a bit in his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you too," Isra says embracing her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually: "I should maybe go see Temperance."

Permalink Mark Unread

Forehead kiss. "Whatever you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You spoil me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggles. Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance can be easily located. Unsurprisingly, she is researching magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Knock knock.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's lunch time already?" Temperance says before opening the door.

It's closer to dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Closer to dinner," she echoes the narration.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oops, got distracted. Do you want to come in, Sadde?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" She does, and finds a seat. "So I heard you found new magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I did! Some principles that we haven't even heard of!" She pulls Sadde to her table. "I'm mainly organizing my plan of attack so to speak."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, show me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She outlines her predictions to which will be easier, and which are dependent on one another, with a decision tree exploring various possibilities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh decision trees! She likes those. She also writes down a lot of stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance is glad to help! She was mostly aiming to do this work by herself, but there are few notes on people that are specialized in this or that area that might help too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool! Sadde would love to help, but is now mostly tallying resources.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is entirely okay! That is how teamwork... works. Temperance's notes are good, but some details could be ironed out given that Sadde knows more about the colony's distribution of strategic assets.

Permalink Mark Unread

At some point they should also, like, go eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup, they should!

Temperance is not prompting it. Maybe someone should arrange regular do-not-starve visits to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe! Sadde's prompting it, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, alright, they will go grab some nutritious grub.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nutritious grub! Yay!

Permalink Mark Unread

At least they are socializing.

Permalink Mark Unread

That they are!

Eventually they're done with food and though Sadde would love to continue nerding about magic with Temperance she has a lot of things to do.

But first she finds Isra to ask, "So you're not into the whole monogamy thing right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra snuggles up. "No."

Apparently he thinks this enough on the matter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I might ask Temperance out. Or, well, not exactly out, but you get what I mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, she is nice. I hope you two have fun." Pause. "Can I ask you two out some day? I think people don't do this here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well if it's alright with her it's definitely alright with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

The response to that is kissing. Or maybe for Isra the topic is already closed and he wants to do that instead. "Love you."

Permalink Mark Unread

So many kisses! "Love you too. But I should get back to work, compile this new info..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sadde is aware that Temperance's preferences run hetero, so a couple of days later when he's feeling particularly boyish he knocks on her door again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, hi Sadde!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello! How's research coming along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too complicated for words and it's going to be extremely complicated to understand and adapt any of it. It's great! How about your job?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Loads of fun! Coordinating everything is complicated, and with this much time to plan we're getting to explore a lot of possible strategies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really, what sorts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have a whole decision tree about what to do depending on what they do, under what circumstances we'll act first, how do deal with unknown unknowns..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, interesting. What sorts of things? Or is some of it top-secret?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not top-secret but better not discuss it out loud, just as a general precaution?" The Captain is very paranoid, commendably.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Loose lips crash ships," Temperance says with a smile. And we can't be sure some people won't change their minds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Precisely.

He proceeds to tell her about various possible scenarios and contingencies they've thought up, several of which taking the information about magic she's been unearthing into account.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tactical applications of magic are very interesting too!

Permalink Mark Unread

But eventually: "So, this is fun but my purpose in coming here was actually something else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you... well, I suppose the social structures don't exist anymore, not on this planet anyway, but the sentiment is the same, do you want to go out on a date with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"—really? Wow that was easier than I'd expected."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why? You are cute, smart and know a lot about magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... I don't know, I'd never actually asked anyone out before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"First time for everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess. And this is probably the first time a date has happened on this planet, so—how exactly would it even work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean maybe the starfish dated as well? Not that that would apply to us. We could go exploring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh sounds fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's check some maps then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maps of what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The planet. For interesting spots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The whole planet?" he laughs. "It's kinda big. And shouldn't the exploration be a surprise? Otherwise it's just tourism."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not the whole thing, silly head."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't address my second point!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Whatever is more fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's just go exploring without a map, it's more fun this way. Tomorrow morning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect!"

Then she kisses him.

Permalink Mark Unread

!

!!!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

When Temperance breaks away she giggles at his face. "You are adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you! It's completely accidental."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's call it a natural talent."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins. "I thought the kiss was meant to come at the end of the first date, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance giggles. "Oops."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I don't think I like the traditional way much, compared," he adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I must say that I agree with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So—tomorrow, no destination?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!" Peck. "I need to go do things, now! Until tomorrow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't wait!" Temperance gets back to her research.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the next day there is presumably breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

And look who is here: Temperance!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning! Are you well rested for our date?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Naturally. Are you, or did you spend all night studying magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As tempting as that would be, no, I slept well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good," he giggles. "Then let's eat and go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing." Hmm, delicious grub.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Well, Isra is stretched thin but he is working on eventually getting orchards.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And after grub:

"Should we bring anything in particular? Hiking stuff, maybe? Do we have hiking stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do actually! Many people have been taking it up as a past time here!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool, then lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance leads to where the equipment is, and leaves a note with their general itinerary and when they should get back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, where to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance points at the map. There are a few possible interesting places which are at a hiking distance; one is even a good exploration site since those rock formations could be used for tactical advantage.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you expect us to need that tactical advantage?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I expect that the captain will complain less if we take breathing equipment to explore something with a tactical advantage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She probably will," he agrees. "Let's go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He does!

"...I don't actually know where to get breathing equipment. I wonder if Isra does?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can ask. I think they liberated something from the Fed ship?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra does in fact know where the breathing equipment is being kept and tells them so. He also kisses Sadde, which could be considered rude to do when someone else is in a date with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

...does Temperance consider it rude?

Permalink Mark Unread

Color her mildly confused but intrigued.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing. I am curious about the," she waves, "the Isra situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about it?—had you thought we'd broken up or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, just occurred to me just now, that I was supposed to ask what I am supposed to expect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... he's pretty open? And I don't really have a lot of experience with this, but monogamy always sounded like... a drag, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never tried other options besides monogamy, but it sounds like a thing to try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You dated much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance does a so-so gesture. "Had a lot of first dates? My longest relationship was just six months. You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Er, I'd never been with anyone, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs. "Not exactly. Merely weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Why exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why what? Why I'm weird? I'd hope it was obvious by now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Well, you could be hiding a multitude of interesting facets. A girl can dream."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm incredibly interesting! How does that preclude being weird? Or vice-versa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! I never said it precludes. If anything, I believe quite the opposite!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Didn't seem so, what with those judgy eyes." He raises both hands to his eyes and wriggles his fingers there, pointing at her and squinting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Judgy? My eyes? I think you need to take a closer look!"

She comically bats her eyelashes at him, then giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could, couldn't I."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course you could," she bats her eyelashes again.

Permalink Mark Unread

So he takes a step closer, and then another, until his nose is barely an inch from hers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance makes a serious face, until she cracks up and kisses him.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Am I? Gosh, how did I never notice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clearly, you were too distracted being adorable to stop and notice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, of course, I should've thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

They reach the location of their date proper. The scenery is quite spectacular.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not quite as spectacular as Temperance is, he thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flattery can get you anywhere! And can get Temperance to kiss you and return the compliment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good!

What else is there to see, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, there is this rock formation, almost a cave. Very private, you know.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they have this nifty piece of equipment that creates a bubble of breathable air around them! How convenient.

Permalink Mark Unread

But convenient to what? One must wonder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely nothing untoward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Clearly. But very non-untoward things can happen. Can't they?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep, they can.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a delightful amount of non-untowards things it's time for them to return to their tiny spot of civilization.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So that was fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, let's do that again someday," kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few days later, the ship with Temperance's brother arrives. Weeks go by. They run out of planning to do and move on to building and getting more resources. A small nonflayer village forms around the skeleton of the gutted ship, and they collect more resources and figure out more magic. Each new breakthrough means they have to redo some part of the plan to take the new resources into account, but that's better than the alternative. And still no sign of invasion from outside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance and her half-brother don't have the warmest reunion. And many might interpret Temperance's tendency to work in her room for days as a means to avoid contact with him. These people clearly don't know Temperance well enough.

Then one day, people hear a high-pitched excited squee coming from Temperance's room. Followed shortly after by Temperance hastily leaving the room while shouting "Portals! Portals!"

This is probably not the most dignified way to announce these news.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her head out of her room to watch Temperance run. "Wuh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I figured out portals!" Temperance says pausing a little but jumping in place. "Got to tell the Captain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh! Yes, go tell her!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance giggles, but leaves to do just that.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Captain is poring over some maps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance does have enough presence of mind (and a limit of how much she can run before needing to catch her breath) that she politely calls the Captain's attention and then announces. "Figured out portals!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks. "Well! That changes just about everything, doesn't it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does, and we can hook it up to the existing infrastructure and achieve interstellar transportation with the resources we have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can we. Sounds like you've got it all figured out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have!" And Temperance launches a very technical explanation about the entire process. It makes absolutely no sense to Monica, but mostly because she can't grasp most concepts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how do we put this in practice?" she asks after indulging Temperance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance produces more opaque arcane jargon, but one that translates more easily to "go to that underwater place, input some coordinates and turn the thing on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, are we ready to move to uncharted waters, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uncharted waters? I actually think we shouldn't open the portal to a planet even on an ocean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ancient expression never mind, I meant just go elsewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right. That we are. Well, I would need some fancy calculations to pick a destination first. Any place in the galaxy that you would like to have nearly instantaneous access to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anywhere far from the Feds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, the farther way the harder the calculation... but I will think of something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! If you don't mind I want to give everyone the good news and maybe eat something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. You've earned your rest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you!"

She leaves and searches for people to share the good news. Maybe Sadde wants to hear the good news?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde has kinda heard but wouldn't object to an elaboration.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Isra is hanging out with Sadde and wouldn't mind hearing about it as well.

Actually a lot of people might want the details.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance is glad to provide. Her explanation gets very opaque, very fast though. And soon Sadde is pretty much the only person that has any grasp about it, at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde however finds it fascinating and wants to go visit the underwater lab next time she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam showed up after the crowd formed and stayed when it dispersed. He is listening from a distance.

"There is no hope we can return to our lives. But I guess we could at least offer the option to become a fugitive to whoever cares to take it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. But... I think I can aim this well enough to hit a ship in orbit, but I don't think I can make it so discreetly enough that people in the ship or space station wouldn't notice and they would see the mysterious portal and likely tell everyone ...unless they are kept hostages. ...Better than nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty sure everyone here is already a fugitive no matter what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but there is a difference between a fugitive in a distant star system and one in a known location inside the Feds' reach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to go back there... but if you could aim at the Above-Zenith Station I don't think they would tell the Feds and would negotiate peacefully for the safe passage..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"—we don't need to go there, we can find elsewhere—"

Everyone to station immediately, a voice sounds in their heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam is the first to react. He stands up and is soon followed by many others.

Permalink Mark Unread

—well then. To station.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is your Captain speaking. The planet is currently surrounded by Fed ships. We do not know how they managed to bypass the magic fields—we do know we've been infiltrated, and the culprit has been captured. If you desire to flee, the option is open to you. We are all going somewhere they cannot reach us—even if they try. And they will try.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance freezes - for just a moment, then runs back to her room to get all her notes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any and all earthists and waterists and airists willing to come are wanted. We are waiting at—and she sends the mental impression of the loading bay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isra reports there at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You, pretty boy, go over there—"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde also helps direct people this way and that where they'll be most needed. They have several submarines and even though this particular eventuality was highly unlikely they had a lot of time to plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which also means there is no need to panic and that everyone can embark in a timely manner. No pushing please.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is no need for pushing, there is enough space and they can all embark.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Albeit some people get Captain authorization to go before everyone else. Since their role is going to be essential.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes it is. Her sub is the first to go down.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is going to spend the entire trip calculating, except when she asks for updates on the surface situation. Assuming there are any.

Permalink Mark Unread

People organising and mobilising—

—ships landing—

Permalink Mark Unread

- Temperance crunches down the numbers. Very nervously.

She makes a different kind of calculation... given how much she knows about how many people they can evacuate.

Temperance resumes crunching down numbers. This needs to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon they reach the underwater structure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance collects all her notes and dashes through the complex searching for the proper chamber.

Permalink Mark Unread

People start arriving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is the Captain one of them? Someone with authority or who knows star-charts?

Where is Isra?

Permalink Mark Unread

Still topside. The Captain is one of the first to arrive after her, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. Does the Captain have time for a private-and-brief but tactically important conversation?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. What is it?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Given how fast the Feds are advancing on us, I doubt I have the time to finish the calculations that could take us to anywhere habitable and distant. I am certain I don't have the time to do that and wreck things here well enough that the Feds can't follow us- I was thinking of taking us to Isra's home station."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we need to—"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadde bursts in. "Isra's still topside making sure everyone gets down okay but he told me to give you this—" And she hands Temperance papers with the coordinates.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance takes the notes quietly. "Thank you." She hugs Sadde briefly, but only briefly. "Okay, with this I can not only take us there, but might be able to set something up to bring a portion of this place's energies with us. Use that for a second portal once we have enough time to sit down and be efficient about energy spenditure - the rest of the energy would make this place implode."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay—go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance just turns around and resumes her work. It still takes time, but she works hard and knows what she is doing. It's mostly a matter of telling the current magical structure to reach for the right coordinates instead of intergalactic void.

She almost considers calling the Captain again before activating, but they have so little time.

The portal doesn't look like a hole in space or a whirlpool of distorted light or anything. Rather, the activation has a visual effect that can only be described as 'standing still in the end of a hallway and watch the other end coming closer'.

The other side is a cargo hold of some kind. There is a tall hulking woman with orange-red fur covering most of her body - Temperance can identify sex because the woman's chest is exposed.

There is a moment of silence, then the woman deposits the container she was carrying and asks, "Do you need any help?"

Temperance collapses of exhaustion and calls the Captain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is that her cue to start sending people? They're rather pressed for time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Send at least someone somehow diplomatic to keep Isra's people calm, but send people right away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh I'm sending someone.

Permalink Mark Unread

The woman approaches. "Please, what is going on? Do you need help?"

"Yes. Uh, I am using a piece of ancient rediscovered magic to create a portal here so we can escape from a government that really shouldn't have access to this kind of power."

The woman nods. "So the answer is yes to the second question." It's not really a question. "I am calling others to come help, I don't know exactly what to do in this situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

It soon transpires that "someone" is "everyone" and the Captain has decided to ignore any diplomacy concerns for the moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, are they planning to cause a disturbance upon seeing the helpful part-animal humans? Because a bunch of those show up. They're curious about this sudden insurgence of new people in their isolated space station. They offer help, they don't initiate any violence and generally try to not get in the way of the evacuation.

Permalink Mark Unread

People are various levels of startled or afraid but honestly they've been selected for finding their government pretty scary they're not gonna let prejudice get in the way right this second.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, in that case they are more than willing to help with the evacuation.

Still, is there someone in charge? Because there is someone in charge here that wants to exchange some words.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

How long is a while?

Permalink Mark Unread

Like fifteen minutes?

Permalink Mark Unread

That is acceptable. The person relaying messages will give directions when the time comes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here's Sadde.

Permalink Mark Unread

And here is Temperance, paying close attention to the portal and making some on the fly corrections to make it slightly more stable and safer to snap close. She isn't as busy however and goes over Sadde. "Hello," she says tiredly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi. Do you need any help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, just need to be mindful. How is the evacuation going? Who- who made it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's going—okay, it's possible everyone'll make it, the Feds are already there but the 'flayers plus some other people are managing them alright, Isra and the Captain are making sure everyone comes through alright—this whole thing is a mess I'll explain how it happened later but ugh—"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. Very much hug.

(More people continue going through the portal.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Presumably this takes more than fifteen minutes and hopefully someone in the category of "in charge" will swing by when that time elapses?

Permalink Mark Unread

If this scary-looking lady telling everyone to hurry up and Temperance to close the portal now counts, then yes.

No one else seems to come after her.

There's no sign of Isra.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance starts closing the portal immediately. The exact process takes long enough that she soon realizes that Isra didn't make it, but she can't interrupt what she is doing.

From this end it's like a bizarre light distortion mushing and blurring everything leaving just a ball of white. Not light, but more like someone used an eraser to remove a perfect circle from the universe. This is the self-contained fraction of energy that Temperance salvaged so they could use it for a second portal.

On the other end: chaos, as space distorts to the point where every single cubic inch is a maze folded upon itself a thousand times. The effect is so strong that it plays with gravity all the way to the surface, making the water turbulent and causing a destructive tsunami that is followed by a second violent wave, and then a third...

Temperance slumps to the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Sadde. "Pretty girl, take care of her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns to the locals and just doesn't have enough glee in her to enjoy saying, "Take me to your leader."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temperance quietly says "I'm so sorry" without looking at Sadde.

The captain is taken to an office-looking room. There is a man with gray hair, but otherwise no other signs of aging. He is standing in front of his desk looking at her curiously. There are four tall men standing against the wall. They watch her with attentive eyes but otherwise neutral expressions, and she can identify traits of at least two different animals in each of them.

"I would deeply appreciate an explanation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm afraid there isn't a short one. Have you met a 'flayer yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't say I have had the pleasure," he says dryly, "nor I have had the pleasure of meeting you. Call me Lord." He inclines his head as if inviting her to introduce herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smirks. "Call me Captain. The 'flayers are a type of artificial construct that achieved sapience a long time ago and possess incredibly strong mind magic. Their creators, conversely, had strong space magic, and we used it to create a portal to here when our delightful dystopic government somehow got past our defences and appeared on our doorstep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For what it's worth Lord is my name. And your story is delightfully interesting and to think that the other day I was wondering how long my boring peace would last." He says that in a friendly tone but then shifts to something way more serious. "How did you come by the information that my lovely sanctuary existed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe we have met someone who came from here. He goes by Isra."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Remarkable individual," Lord says, "we are all worried for his safety."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a well-placed worry. He was fine until... just now. He's been captured."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lord pauses for a moment. "It isn't a surprising outcome. There are reasons why I make this place so insular." He starts serving tea. "As much I would like to have hope for our Isra, I think we are best served discussing more immediate things. Moving forward, what are your goals? Tea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, thank you. My goals are making sure my people are safe and making sure they don't get their hands on this kind of magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lord sips from his tea. "Well, what would be your tools to accomplish that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The people themselves. Temperance's knowledge of space magic, and the 'flayers' knowledge of mind magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are the limits of them both? Presumably, the space magic is limited such that coming here was your best bet? Couldn't you have found another place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We didn't have the time—Temperance had just figured out how to work it, but we had a spy on the inside. He'd been planning to catch us unawares but when he heard her shouting about her discovery down the hall he decided it was time to move and we had to think fast. Isra already had the coordinates, we knew it was out of the Federation's reach, we came."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are not out of reach enough. But my last reports on Isra's whereabouts indicate we have time to plan. Do you think this Temperance could replicate the trick? Twice if possible, but I wouldn't object to sharing a planet in principle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure she could, she has brought extra energy with her to do just that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that the ball of white light in my cargo bay? Good to know. Well, what do you think of this fair trade: we graciously host your people and in exchange we find a way for both of us to be out of the Federation's reach?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds agreeable to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, I hope this turns out to be a constructive relationship between our groups. Do you have anything immediate to discuss? I have someone that can deal with logistics with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not, and that would be lovely, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome. If you don't mind, I have... a lot to reflect upon."

And if it wasn't clear enough she was dismissed one of the bodyguards (some sort of cheetah-lizard hybrid) escorts her out and follows her into the hallway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile Sadde's trying hard not to hyperventilate on Temperance.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is okay, Temperance can hold Sadde in her arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll just. Cling. Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam will show up and just... sit nearby not being intrusive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually she recovers enough to say: "We'll get them back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...how many? Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure how many, but at least Isra and Gabe and a few others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How about Henry? Any idea how he is dealing with this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They had to knock him out, he was too agitated."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs then repeats, "We'll find them," with more force.

Permalink Mark Unread

A woman with cat-like eyes approaches them. Sadde recognizes her from Isra's memories as a babyminder modulo some extra years.

"Hello, I am Utara. I am helping with organizing things to help you. Do you have particular needs or wants? Sleep arrangements? Allergies? Fears? I can find someone less inhuman-looking if my appearance is disconcerting or act by a proxy. "

"I am allergic to cats," Adam says agape.

"I shouldn't induce that set of allergies."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up and nods. "I'm fine. I—I want something to do, I want to help coordinate whatever, can I do that? Keep my mind busy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Utara nods and smiles. "You should look for Veara then. She will direct you to the right places." She gives a description and a direction.

Temperance looks like she is about to say something but doesn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Temperance quizzically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just don't overwork yourself. I don't think Isra wants that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I have an overworked setting." He looks at the ball of light and sighs. "Thank you. For everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome," Temperance says like she doesn't think she deserves any thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Temperance a hug and goes off.
