it's the side effects that save us
elesse is the summoned hero
Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is flying from Coruscant to the Mid Rim to check on one of the old satellite temples, to see if anything survived the purge. She's in a small shuttlecraft by herself, which proves to be fortunate when half an hour out she encounters a hyperspace anomaly that rips her ship in half.

She is dumped out of hyperspace as she no longer is within the effect of a hyperdrive. Fortunately, she is also somehow within the atmosphere of a planet instead of a random point in interstellar space, so this is not immediately fatal, and assuming she can survive the imminent crash, she may live longer yet.

Her half a ship traces a fiery arc across the sky and down into a forest, crashing through branches and furrowing the ground until it finally comes to a halt at the trunk of a particularly large tree, which creaks ominously.

Elesse hops nimbly out of the wreckage shortly thereafter. At least anything that is likely to explode has already been lost to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's: a woodland, old growth, colors vibrant, flowers blooming along the forest floor. A few bees bumble between the flowers. A stream meanders by; it seems she narrowly avoided landing in it. It's a rather picturesque place, calm and charming and only subtly humming with potential danger. Most people would probably miss that, actually, at a surface level the place feels safe.

There's a light through the trees - a small building next to where the stream meets a river, barely visible downhill of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. She should probably go- apologize, and see where she has landed herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's an alarmed boy - or, well, young man - heading toward her actually, weaving up through the trees.

"Are you okay?" he calls.

He's rather familiar, albeit at least a decade younger than she's used to seeing him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke?

"Yes, I am fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something crashed in the forest..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, that was me. My apologies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - alright. Out here's pretty deserted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some luck, at least. My name is Elesse, what is yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Depends what you mean. I haven't earned a proper one yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Odd culture.

"What shall I call you, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Luka's what my aunt and uncle call - called - me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is good to meet you, Luka."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good to meet you too, Elesse." He perks up a bit. "If you're someone with a name - could you help me with something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a girl that got kidnapped - I'm not sure anyone else knows. I'm going to try to rescue her, but... I'm not anyone Great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. That sounds dire."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I don't really know her, but - she feels important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suspect she might be. Do you have any siblings, Luka?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No." He sounds a bit wistful about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Do you have supplies to gather?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was almost done packing - I don't have much, really..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should set out soon, then. This seems time sensitive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

He turns, leading the way back to his cottage. It looks like there might've been a fight, recently, and there's two fresh graves nearby. It's small, one of several buildings that apparently makes up the small farm, though there's no livestock. Luka heads inside, glancing away from the signs of battle, and finishes putting together preserved food. He doesn't seem to have any weapon other than a few utility knives he hesitantly wraps up and stows.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is disturbingly similar to Luke's story.

"Is there anything else you want to keep?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'd been assuming I could come back. But."

"Yeah, I might not be able to..."

He goes to add some more things, including a selection of small mementos.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is important to consider paths where things do not go as you would like, as well as ones where they do."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, slowly. "Hadn't thought of it that way..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One usually learns the habit through experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. I mean, I know you can't count on a good harvest..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it is with all areas of life."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods and finishes packing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need me to pack anything away?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A few things - "

He starts directing her to help him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets things in order quickly and efficiently.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's melancholy as they finish up and leave.

"Are you from nearby?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not. This is my first visit to the area, unintentional as it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where were you going instead?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"An old temple I used to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "There's a lot of ruins around here. Mostly tombs, but probably some temples... Though not much that's in use."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno there's any big famous ones? The tombs are mostly small..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even so, they are a reminder of history."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Keeps names alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But if you aren't local, you probably don't know a lot about the local people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is true. But there are still things one can learn, if one is perceptive and receptive."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "But, for what's going on - the girl who I'm trying to save isn't local, either. She was traveling. She's one of the Great, but not a really experienced one - she sent out a spell and I caught it and it said she didn't know how to do much more. A villain from nearby kidnapped her. He's more experienced, but..." He hums. "I mean, the rest of us usually can't challenge one of the Great, you know? So he pretty much ignores us. And without a Name there's a lot I could just shrug off... So I figured I have a chance, just sneaking in and out. And I gotta try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. What makes a person Great?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having a Name, doing - big great deeds, having magic... You know, that sort of stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not, in fact, know. Where I come from, we do not make such distinctions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Where are you from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A planet called Coruscant."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - A planet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A world, generally spherical, which orbits in space around a sun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't heard of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This world seems to be at a low level of technological development, so that is not entirely surprising. Of course, it may also be that this universe subscribes to a different philosophy of organization."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think you're from another universe?" He doesn't sound very surprised or disbelieving, just thoughtful.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am reasonably certain that I am, yes. This will not be the first one I have come across, though usually arrivals are not so... flashy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've heard of that... Or, like, myths. Though everyone in the stories is like a kid or teenager..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The myth's that the world pulls people into it who're destined to be a great hero or villain - usually alternating, I think? And I've heard there's someone claiming to be a Great Villain around... But - that's a myth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Myths are often attempts at explaining natural phenomena in a comprehensible fashion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess? But I haven't ever heard of anyone over sixteen appearing..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps I am a special case."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "That'd be interesting. I don't really know enough to do a full - explanation of everything? But the person we're rescuing might, the spell said she was a princess..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's not keep her waiting, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I was thinking just walk in, trying to get a ride would be faster but might be conspicuous..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some initial reconnaissance would be wise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, yeah. Just watching the castle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Observing the castle, cataloging defenses, entries, exits, guard personnel. Perhaps also speaking with the locals to see if they have relevant information about the inhabitants of the castle or quirks of the local terrain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a town that supports it, and a bunch of surrounding farmland. We could ask questions on our way there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Main road's over this way, then..." He cuts to the left at the next fork in the path, following the larger of the dirt roads. It eventually meets a dirt and mud road, wagon wheel marks pressed deep into it, winding along a river through land cleared for agriculture. Since they're talking to people anyways, Luka gets them a ride with some merchants going downriver to the big capital town - it'll be a lot faster, and the merchants are inclined to gossip. Luka says he's a farm boy, but the farm's not had much space for him, so he's seeking employment in the city, and his friend is a traveler.

(No one, at any point, introduces themself by - or uses - names.)

The planet seems thoroughly primitive, though from the merchants' talk this particular land, so far from the old Empire, is a lackluster backwater. Still, that means it's pretty far from The Villain, so it all balances out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse also does not use her own name. She draws the merchants out in conversation about the region, patterns of trade, local polities and politicians, history...

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the Villain has been laying low the last, oh, twenty years. People're still scared of her, though, even if things are now finally starting to recover from when she overthrew the last Hero. There's a lot of speculation about that, what she could be planning, what she's up to, but no real firm conclusions - of course, her main stomping grounds are also a bit farther from here, but the echoes still get felt whenever a war starts up.

Small time trade is mostly along the rivers, and is mostly short distance (there's a lot of grain flowing into the cities). Many of the Great retire to become merchants, though, so sometimes you get lucky and there's a portal or a teleport on offer - they're pricey but not as pricey as a ship.

One merchant's heard about a new tomb growing, too, that's been causing problems on some routes - some Great went and died on a major river (there's a silent 'the idiot'). They're hoping to entice someone to go beat it back a little, even if taking it out entirely is unlikely.

This region's not known for much. Exports high value wood, mostly.

The merchants generally don't like the local rulers, but are polite about expressing that - and the local rulers are disproportionately likely to have proper Names (there's a subtle quality to the one actually mentioned, a way it rings, something Luka's name never does). (Many of the Great also retire into conquest or politics). The top of the local little pile of lords is Taurna, a cruel man by anyone's measure, prone to raising taxes for petty reasons. No one really likes him, but he's been hard to unseat.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods along.

(Seems like fairly standard social dynamics, at least. Warlords are something she knows, and if these Names have more personal power than others- that's familiar too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Luka manages to get some gossip on the guards - well trained, obedient, though often as cruel as their leader - at least from descriptions of how they behave when about town.

People do trade directly with the castle, and there's a good amount of in and out.

Permalink Mark Unread

That could be their entrance.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll be arriving soon enough. The closest stop is in the port on the edge of town; after that, the boat will keep going down river. It'll be evening; does she want to spend much time in the town itself? (Luka seems anxious.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They can keep moving.

Permalink Mark Unread

He prefers that...

The town is - decent sized, probably, for their technology level. Tiny by any metric Elesse's used to. Crowded and smelly and downtrodden, full of cautious people under the eyes of a rather disproportionate number of guards. The castle looms grandly over the shabby town, and there's a dedicated road to it from the docks that the wealthier merchants take.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are there any merchants on the road at the moment?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's some heading away from the castle; no one seems to be planning on starting business now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are the guards alert and competent as well as numerous?

Permalink Mark Unread

Alert, certainly. Competent - possibly. They show signs of being extremely thoroughly drilled, at least, unusually so for a place apparently this far from active war zones.

Permalink Mark Unread

What other approaches to the castle are there?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not many; it's well fortified against outright attack, even if less so against sufficiently clever infiltration. There's no easily visible drain, nor a profusion of entrances and exits. The trees around the town are cleared to a good distance.  There's one heavily fortified gate in each direction, only one of which seems to be usually open.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here are our options, as I see them," she says to Luka. "We can attempt to infiltrate directly, which will be dangerous and has a high chance of failure. We can wait until tomorrow and persuade a merchant convoy to allow us to join. One of us could cause a distraction while the other sneaks in. Or we could ambush a pair of guards and take their uniforms."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates, biting his lip. "Ambushing guards seems risky, too - we won't know their routines or anything. I - don't want to wait, but I think failing would - just make more problems..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uniforms will get us up to the gate. I am fairly confident I can talk us through."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would that be faster than going in with merchants?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, we could do that tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to leave her longer than we have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us find an alley, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

There's a few good ones, some even decent ambush points for assorted guards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse waits for a pair of guards with approximately the correct heights to pass by. She lures them into the dark with an illusory noise and knocks them out quietly and efficiently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luka hangs back, eyes a bit wide.

Still, he helps her get their uniforms off fairly efficiently, and arranges them into comfortable positions after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it's off to the castle.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're not stopped, heading towards the castle.

They are at the gate. They need to state their names, ranks, and current assignment.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out to push the gate guard's mind. They've already given that information.

Permalink Mark Unread

His gaze goes a bit distant, but he agrees - their information looks good.

He steps aside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then into the castle. Now... which way to find Leia?

Permalink Mark Unread

Down; the stairs are near the highest part of the castle, farthest from the river.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads Luka in that direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

He keeps his face calm and even, following her, though he still feels worried and a bit jumpy.

They're not challenged on the way - but there's less activity in the area right around the stairs, and the stairs have a guard who asks their business.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're here to see the prisoner. She flicks her fingers. They have permission, there is no need to report this.

Permalink Mark Unread

That - seems a bit of a harder sell.

Still, she's able to overcome whatever mental defenses the guard has, and they're let through.

Permalink Mark Unread

Getting out cleanly will be more difficult yet, then. She may want to skip straight to escalation at that point.

Down the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a corridor at the bottom - a guard station to one side, a heavy locked door to the other. There's two guards sitting at a table outside the locked door. Both rise to their feet when Elesse and Luka approach, demanding their business again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a clapping gesture, slamming their heads together with telekinetic force.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of them staggers and falls, but the other keeps her feet and shouts, her hand going to a sigil on her waist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse slams her up against the wall, limbs pinned spreadeagle and mouth forced closed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries to resist, jerking a bit - but while she's still conscious she isn't able to overcome Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

She forces her into unconsciousness, then makes sure of the other guard.

Permalink Mark Unread

They both go down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does one of them have a key to the door?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing that's identifiable as a key, no.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll make her own, then.

She draws forth her lightsaber, igniting it and jabbing it snakelike into the locking mechanism in one smooth motion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something incredibly odd, like a shimmer of a soap bubble, flares in front of the door, before wavering and popping. Still, the door seems unlocked, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Must be the local flavor of magic. She opens the door, keeping her senses tuned for guards coming from behind in case it triggered an alarm.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's definitely something stirring up above her. Quietly, though.

There's a hallway beyond, with staggered locked doors.

Permalink Mark Unread

She searches for Leia's presence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Third door on the right, and extremely angry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does her door submit to the same lockpicking technique?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes.

When the door gives way, she's apparently been blindfolded, gagged, and bound, even her fingers kept from moving, and chained to the wall. There's a few strange sigils painted on the walls and floor around her, and several on her bindings. A few of the sigils are exceptionally dangerous.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah. This could get tricky.

She takes a deep breath and sinks into the Force, letting her instincts guide her hands to free the captive.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first thing -

Apparently freeing Leya's hands and eyes, carefully weaving around the sigils. Leya immediately takes in the scene, and her fingers start dancing as she keeps her hands still, rapidly unweaving the danger right around her as Elesse undoes further bindings.

It takes a little bit, and it seems some kind of alarm got tripped at some point, because there's a creeping sense of danger towards the exit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could you check the door, please?" she says to Luka, continuing to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

He ducks his head out. "I don't see anything... But something feels wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Taurna's noticed this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Are you able to move?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves her hand, and the last of the sigils snaps. "I am now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Let us go. Please stay alert against local magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tight nod. "They might appear behind us; I'll be best going last."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Then I will lead. Luka, stay between us."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, tightly, privately deciding he really needs some training...

Permalink Mark Unread

And onward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone's waiting for them at the top of the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blasts them out of the way with concussive force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two guards go sliding back, more stumble or fall or fly -

But there's a man, late middle aged, well groomed, wearing a sharply cut uniform, who doesn't move. He has his hands behind his back, right now, and just raises an eyebrow. (He's rather dangerous).

"Must we fight? This is quite a lot of effort for one girl," he says. "Especially one who barely has her Name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More so on your part than mine. If you wish to step aside, then by all means do so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tight smile. "I'm afraid I can't do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you have your answer, as I am similarly disinclined to allow you keep her an unwilling guest."

Permalink Mark Unread

He inclines his head. "May I at least have the honor of knowing your Name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps if I had one to give you."

Permalink Mark Unread

The look he sends Luka is very, very far from friendly. "You don't seem like someone without."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Appearances can be deceiving," she says as she tosses her saber up and sends it scything a golden streak towards the man.

Permalink Mark Unread

He disappears just before her saber would've stricken him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She advances up the stairs as she calls it back to her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

And, a flicker behind her -

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns to address the threat, pre-emptively dodging-

Permalink Mark Unread

Luka won't be as fast, and her opponent is opening with a blow meant for him -

Permalink Mark Unread

She pushes him out of the way with one hand, bringing the other around with her saber for a strike.

Permalink Mark Unread

Taurna's blade meets hers - and, after a moment, fails.

Taurna flickers out of the way again, but he's startled, and he apparently can't or won't go far - he appears at the top of the stairs again -

Permalink Mark Unread

She gestures, and torches in their sconces rip off the walls to hurl themselves at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

They burst into ash before they can reach him; his fingers dance a bit and he hums.

Permalink Mark Unread

The step he's on attempts to flip itself over.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leaps to another, and the wind whips up around her, harsh.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the side tables arrives to meet him at his landing.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches, awkwardly blasting it to the side - leaving himself open for a second.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's already launching in to exploit the gap.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries to twist out of her way, teleporting again - but for some reason he doesn't go as far, more blinking a few feet away than anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Running out of power or a cooldown, perhaps.

Regardless, she keeps the pressure on, mixing physical and telekinetic attacks in the style that served her so well on battlefronts across the galaxy.

Permalink Mark Unread

He isn't nearly as skilled as her, especially once the advantage of his unfamiliar magic wears off, and quickly switches to the retreat, barely keeping himself from being critically wounded.

Permalink Mark Unread

For now, she'll settle for getting her two followers out of here relatively cleanly.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's manageable, and his underlings put up only a token show of fighting her once she beats him back.

Permalink Mark Unread

The quicker they get out of her way, the less they will hurt. She's very fair like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They seem somewhat talented at striking a balance between 'looking like they followed orders to try and stop her' and 'actually getting seriously injured'.

Neither of Elesse's followers is injured on the way out of the castle, though vanishing into the town might be hard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless the princess has a pressing wish to do so, she does not think that should be their first course of action.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't.

"What now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should put some distance between ourselves and this place. Have you a suggestion or preference on which direction?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can get us across the river. They'll have trouble following, since Taurna won't lower himself to transport."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and gestures, sending them all into the air - a bit jerkily, unideal for combat, but good for fleeing quickly - and flies them across the river. "I don't want to go straight to any hideouts," she calls. "But there's a weak tomb that throws off divination nearby, we can pass through there..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How dangerous is it likely to be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could handle it myself easy, and it probably wouldn't kill even farm boy over here if he was trying to take the entire thing on alone. We stick to the outside and we should be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Agreed, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. This way..."

She's not able to fly them the entire way, but she can do long hops just fine even with fairly short rests between. Night falls quickly, but Leya mutters a spell giving herself night vision. The tomb she brings them to -

It's strange. Like there's nothing there. The outside is white marble ruins, fading into the forest, vines growing up broken columns that scream this place is forgotten. A pervasive shadow lies over it, deeper than it should be, and the columns glow in the moonlight.

"We should skirt around the outskirts - walking, keeping moving - but the longer we stay, the stronger the effect will be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. I do not like this place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It feels... incorrect. Warped."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It feels like a normal tomb to me. Though 'warped' isn't a bad description..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Luka makes a face. "They're all creepy. Even the Hero tombs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not wish to linger here once our purpose has been fulfilled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine. We'll keep moving, though going on foot will give me time to recover and get less attention..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should have enough distance by now, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and starts walking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So why was Taurna so interested in keeping you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's been fighting with my family for decades, and I humiliated him recently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stole a rather large chunk of classified material; after we'd used what we could militarily, I had the embarrassing bits spread."

Permalink Mark Unread

"His response seems a bit disproportionate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Normal, for someone like him."

Permalink Mark Unread

She clicks her tongue. "Poorly civilized."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Sadly so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my world, a man like he would not be gotten so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not a native. Luka mentioned a concept called the 'Summoned Hero'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Yes. They've always been a teenager at the oldest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is the most likely explanation from my perspective, as none of the other methods of interworld transit I am aware of were in action at the time I arrived."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's - strange - but everything's been strange this cycle, if you trust the history books..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What else is odd?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was - a lot weird with timing. The last Hero was around for an unusually long time - the Villain who showed up had support in overthrowing him, there's always that, but - looking at the dates, she didn't even try for a while, and now his tomb's lost when the tombs of the Summoned Heroes or Villains are usually massive. And the Villain's been barely around for a while, now, usually there's more of - the government being actually led by whoever was summoned last."

"The Villain's also refused to give anyone anything normal to call her by, and - she claimed 'The Villain of This Story' as her Name. Others have had titles, but not - like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I think you being an adult is - possibly odder."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is are the usual time gaps between Heros and Villains?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "At least a few decades, almost never more than two centuries... The last Hero was around for at least three centuries, and the current Villain's been around for about forty years... On the low side, but not extremely so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So a child faces someone with centuries of experience?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Usually they have help, but - it's often bloody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What a wasteful system."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "There's a lot of instability, too, whenever there's a changeover."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unsurprising."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one's sure if the cycle can actually be broken, or how to do that, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once I am found, I am sure considerable resources will be brought to bear on the problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd mentioned other ways of getting between worlds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I am part of a multiversal group of... templates, shall we say. Versions of the same person from different worlds. There are a variety of transit methods known to us, spells, portals, and the like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think anyone's ever been followed... But I don't know how common transit methods are elsewhere..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you tell someone's the same person?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are a pair of gods who can see such things. Personally, I am Force sensitive, and all members of a template have the same Force signature."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Force sensitive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force is an energy field, affected and generated by all living things. Gifted individuals can sense and manipulate the Force to a variety of ends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never heard of it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe the ability to consciously interact with the Force is quirk unique to inhabitants of my native world."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "That makes sense; none of the Heroes or Villains have ever had our sort of magic starting out, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have encountered some contagious magic systems, though I have not picked any up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know if ours is properly contagious - your Name and how well it's known feeds into your power, but your power and your accomplishments, even silent ones, also feed into giving you a stronger Name. The Great Heroes and Villains can learn to use it, but I don't know if that will be universal..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do have a name of my own, though I am not sure if it is mystically significant in the same way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be able to tell if I heard it, though there's tradeoffs. Your Name being well known gives you power, but if someone Great has your Name they can use that against you - more so the fewer people who know your Name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounded like one of the Names of the Great to me," Luka says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My name is Elesse."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "That does sound like an actual Name."

"I'm Leya."

Her name rings oddly, layered with potential.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can hear... something, in that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Potential?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been told my Name sounds like that. I'm - not sure what the layers to yours are. They're strange."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does the sound of a Name signify?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "What it represents, mostly, or what it will represent, or - the associations people have or should or will have when they hear of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it's a shortcut to reputation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Effectively, yes..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting a Name is hard, too, and you're at your most vulnerable while it's still building."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is getting a Name a voluntary action?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's hard to do on accident, but that's possible technically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is usually involved?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Generally you start out by accompanying someone with a Name on their adventures, learning to fight, and - being useful and well known, effectively, especially for martial prowess. Clearing out tombs helps a lot, there, if they're building up monsters - has anyone explained tombs to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If someone Great dies, a tomb forms where they fell. Usually its size scales with how powerful they were, and usually it has a theme, of sorts, that's - appropriate for the person. Tombs generate guardians, and also sometimes generate monsters that cause problems outside the tomb's proper area. Tombs can repair themselves, but only slowly, and they can be destroyed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems like.. an echo of their magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly so. I don't know how much - of the actual person remains in a tomb."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not very much, I should think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've certainly never heard of someone's ghost outright manifesting - or even of someone rearranging the decorations to spell words."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As expected."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does your world have something similar, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In certain, very limited cases, it is possible for a Force user to leave ghost behind in the event of their death, a sort of psychic impression on the world. It is possible to communicate with these, but they do not think as such. They are focused on the events and emotions surrounding their demise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

"We don't have that exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it is not quite the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Does magic vary a lot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Typically, yes. There can be points of convergence, but the mechanics are usually distinct. We have found only two worlds that are outright copies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But there's the same people across multiple worlds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Accounting for variations in circumstance and upbringing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds - strange."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can be... disorienting, to see a reflection of oneself in another person."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "It seems like it would be..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The two of you are familiar to me, incidentally."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - We are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes." She smiles slighly. "Friends of the family, as it were."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh... That's a really weird thought, that you know an alternate me and her..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are siblings. Twins, in fact."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Wait really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, though they were separated at birth. They did not discover their relationship until they were, mm, a little older than you are now."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'm adopted." She looks at Luka.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I am too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"While I cannot say anything for certain, elements of your backgrounds are suggestive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might be able to get it confirmed magically..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that interests you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd - change some things."

"Do you know who our birth parents might be, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of them, perhaps. Though that is not necessarily consistent."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, slowly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My aunt and uncle never told me anything about them - said my mother was Great, once, but - not much else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The mother is the one I know of your alternates."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'm guessing 'what's she like' might not - transfer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was- bright and energetic, and had a fierce passion for the people she believed in."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smile. "That's - good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am better for having known her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leya hums, gaze a bit distant. "A good trait for someone to have..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we happen across her counterpart, I can point her out."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

And, soon enough, they finish skirting around the ruins. Nothing attacks them, though there's some moments where it distinctly feels like something (not quite hostile, not quite hungry, but potentially so) is watching them. Leya's rested enough to take them the rest of the way to a safe house, which currently means somewhere to sleep in the house of an ally of her family (someone one of her aunts knows, apparently) who very carefully expresses absolutely no interest in them.

The next day, Leya gets them back to her family. She's able to confirm her and Luka's relationship, and she gets Luka some training in the local fighting styles and magic. Luka isn't the most dedicated student, but he slowly shapes up, especially as Leya takes him (and Elesse, if she wants to come) with her to go and solve assorted problems across the nearby countryside. There seems to be a rather high number of petty warlords and wandering monsters.

Nobody comes for Elesse from outside the world. No news comes from the Great Villain; she's as quiescent as she has been for over a decade. The world feels almost like it's holding its breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is perfectly willing to help, and dip a toe or two in the local magic system. She otherwise stays fairly self-contained, meditating and training on her own. (Any progress on the group finding her wouldn't be visible from her position, of course.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And then they get word via spell of a monster attack on one of the border keeps - a tomb sprung up right outside of town, grew unusually quickly, the townspeople have retreated into the keep but they're besieged and desperately need at least a path to evacuate.

Leya and Luka are both going.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just like Christophsis.

Elesse will join them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leya's flight has picked up speed over the last little bit, and she gets them there quickly.

The keep's still standing, archers along the wall. Leya drops them in the courtyard and finds someone to give them a situation summary.

Apparently another Great beat them here, helped the last few stranded townsfolk into the keep, and then went into the tomb alone to fight it back - that was about fifteen minutes ago. The monster attacks have mostly let up, but their defenders are growing tired, and they're afraid of another wave. The monsters are prone to swarming, and aren't nearly as individually weak as swarmers usually are.

Permalink Mark Unread

It might be wise to split their efforts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can stay here on defense - it fits our strengths better - if you're willing to risk going in alone..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will not be the first time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good fortune, then," she says, falling back to help coordinate the defense - she's got a knack for command, and no small amount of experience, and she deftly starts weaving herself into the local structure.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Elesse sets off for the tomb.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's strange, made of haphazardly stacked stone - it looks precarious, but feels solid. The monsters are mostly plant-like, tangles of thorns and vines and flowers with sharp teeth and wicked claws and barbed whip-tails. Most of them can climb. All of them are fast, and come up to her mid thigh at the shoulder at least, longer than they are tall. There's not too many near the walls, between the archers and whoever went in before her, and she doesn't get swarmed until she's entered the winding corridors of the tomb itself - and her lightsaber can make quick work of the monsters, which wither when cut.

- And there's sounds of a fight up ahead -

Permalink Mark Unread

She increases her pace, her saber flashing a gold cocoon of death as she moves forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a woman, knives flashing around her - many of them floating - tearing her way through the swarms, teeth grit.

Her Force signature is very, very familiar, even if her face is new.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well now. Isn't that something.

Permalink Mark Unread

She notices Elesse and nods to her as she finishes off the last bit of the present swarm.

"Here to help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah... as much as you need it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't object. Speed here means fewer casualties out there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a plan beyond 'kill everything that moves'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can shut down the tomb if I get to the center."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad you approve."

"I think this is the fastest path, though if you happen to have picked up divination that'd be useful here..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse closes her eyes and reaches out to the Force for a hint of the future.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is probably the second fastest path; there's a slightly faster one if they back up a bit and turn to the right, though there's more resistance - nothing that screams 'immensely dangerous,' though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She opens her eyes and points.

"That way if you feel like more of a fight. This path will work, however."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums, clearly considering it for a second. "This path it is, then. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

A touch unexpected.

"Lead on."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets a harsh pace through the rest of the tomb, though, clearly expecting Elesse to keep up - but she also visually checks on Elesse at intervals, especially after fights, and seems to be avoiding unneeded injury.

Resistance gets higher the closer to the center, and then they come to two heavy stone doors - shut tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has no problems keeping up with the pace alt-Ani sets. When they get to the door, she glances over to see if the other has opinions on how to proceed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums, examining it, putting her palm an inch from the stone.

"It isn't trapped," she says, "But the room's likely full. I can open with an area stun and head for the crux, if you can keep any early recoveries off my back. I won't be able to fight while shutting everything down, not well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that," she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here we go, then," she says, and pushes her hand against the doors. Both fly open with a bang, and Ashes makes a little tossing motion, something glittering flying from her palm to arc into the middle of a surging swarm of monsters. The glitter explodes over them, and they reel, most of them - except the larger ones - stunned.

Ashes sprints into the room, dancing over stunned monsters, straight for a sarcophagus on a large pedestal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesses floats around her, never blocking her way but always in just the right spot to clear a monster or block a strike.

Permalink Mark Unread

She plants herself in front of the sarcophagus and starts humming, then - singing, more than chanting, hands moving like she's weaving. She trusts her defense to Elesse, focusing entirely on her spell, laying something a lot like a shimmering net over the sarcophagus. It tightens, gossamer threads winding in, and the tomb shakes a bit, monsters picking up their attacks against her, trying to get around Elesse. It takes her a short while, as the monsters escalate their defense, as more and more wake up only to be cut down by Elesse's blade.

And then -

It's like the tomb's essence folds in on itself, the threads in the woman's hands connected to the edges as she tugs them in. The ground splits open in front of the woman, and the sarcophagus sinks into the earth. Dirt flows in, and plants grow along the glowing net, life rapidly weaving over the sinking stones as the tomb decays in fast motion. A thorny bush roots and then grows over the burial mound, and the monsters moan and stop moving, their feet burrowing into the ground, until they're - just bushes, shaped only vaguely like creatures.

They're left in a sunny clearing, in the ruins of a building once built from stacked stone, now choked in vines.

The woman lets out a heavy breath. She seems - exhausted, worn down, like the spell drained something ephemeral from her.

"That should do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it would seem. That was very impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins. "Would've been a lot harder without help." She looks at Elesse appraisingly. "You're a good fighter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have been told as much once or twice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not nearly often enough, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is not really my primary skillset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Diplomacy and philosophy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A woman of many talents, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I enjoy being well-rounded."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good thing to be."

She stretches, languid, and glances toward the keep.

"The monsters should all be gone, but I'd like to check on the defenders anyways..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I left the other two members of my party with them. They should be in good shape."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good."

"I wouldn't mind sticking around to investigate why this tomb went strange so fast, actually... And - " She waves a hand vaguely. " - The whole 'thanking' routine gets - weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's almost as much for their benefit as yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "I suppose so. And they'll want to know whether it's safe to stick around..." She sighs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you make a habit of this sort of hero-ing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lately, I have been. I seem to have a knack for finding problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

She chuckles. "You're able to handle it, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd hope so." She sighs and stretches again, cracking her neck, before starting to pick her way toward the keep.

"What about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The first thing I did after I arrived in this world was rescue a princess in distress."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at Elesse, expression pensive. "Arrived in this world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Opinions vary as to whether I am the next Summoned Hero or simply the victim of an unfortunate accident."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stills momentarily - barely a moment - then keeps moving.

"Huh. Stranger things in heaven and earth, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And many places between. This is not the first foreign world I have traveled to, which is one point of confusion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you didn't come here on purpose?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did not."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet for a few beats.

"Well, I suppose it's about time things changed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This world does not seem so bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's - a lot that's broken."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is a lot that is broken everywhere. And if people are always waiting for one destined person to swoop down and fix things- or break them again- nothing real will ever change."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins, broadly. "And if the world plays with a stacked deck, you cheat right back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so. When my interworld group finds me, that will become much easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, thinking. "What are they like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have a concept called alts, because we have noticed that certain people, personalities and circumstances, repeat across worlds. There are two major alt groups. One is mine, the other is- well, you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's clearly surprised, steps halting.

She's quiet for a few long moments, then: "That's. Strange, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are the first to possess your particular face. Many of us look very similar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then how did you recognize me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My own brand of magic, which comes from manipulating the Force. Among other things, I am able to recognize members of a template."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

She hums, gaze distant.

"How alike are alts, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most of the basic personality is the same, with variations for peculiarities of upbringing and culture."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I can't say I've ever met anyone who already knew me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can be disconcerting, especially in cases where there are significant differences. For instance, one of your alts has children, twins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

"Only the one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances down, deep in thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse reaches out to lightly brush the edge of her emotions, get an idea of the drift of her thoughts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sad, mostly, infused with a sort of bone deep exhaustion and traced with wistfulness.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mention this in particular," she says carefully, "because my two companions are alts of those twins."

Permalink Mark Unread

Surprise, and unease, and - something almost like shame. Uncertainty.

She looks away.

"How are they?" she asks, voice quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are both well. The girl is a princess and a Name, and I believe the boy will earn his. I told them what I suspected of their relationship, and the girl had her adoptive parents confirm it."

"They would both like to meet their mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a little.

"That's - good. Though I'd disappoint them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would not be too sure about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm hardly an ideal mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do not have to be. They are adults now. You just have to be yourself, that is all they want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't have a good explanation for why I didn't raise them. Not - a true or complete one."

"There is a lot of myself it would be - hard to share."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I told them I would point you out if I met you, but if you do not wish me to, I will not."

"Ani, your alt, also missed almost twenty years of her children's life due to circumstances outside her control. That is one of her biggest regrets and reconnecting brought her- a great deal of joy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Similar personalities and circumstances, huh..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More similar than we might wish, occasionally."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles back.

"If they don't mind only adding to their questions about their mother, I - "

"Would like to get to know them, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is good. They should be coordinating the defenses."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her smile turns a bit softer as she starts walking back again.

"What're you planning to do, until your shining cavalry of alts comes to save the day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have been considering how best to encourage the world to save itself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you not planning to confront the Villain, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it proves necessary. My understanding is that they have been fairly quiescent of late."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even if they did horrid things in the past?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People can change over time. I suppose if any of their victims are alive and seeking restitution, and their current attitude toward those victims and the things they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "So restitution over revenge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When possible. In my experience, it is... more satisfying for all parties, in the long run."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Revenge is often somewhat easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I think I'd be disappointed if the world was cleverly arranged so all the satisfying paths were easy and clearly marked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would make them less satisfying."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Perhaps some good things can be obvious, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It keeps you on your toes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially if you enjoying dancing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I usually do. Though it's nice to rest, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sends Elesse a soft, warm smile.

(They'll be at the keep, soon.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse shares a few anecdotes about Leya and Luka.

Permalink Mark Unread

The woman soaks them up.

When they get to the keep, they're not able to talk to Luka and Leya immediately - the people there insist on knowing their saviors' Names and celebrating them.

The woman introduces herself as Ashes; it doesn't have the ring of a Name, something that seems to take their listeners slightly aback. Still, no one says anything about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse follows suit, naming herself Jedi.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's reluctantly accepted; Ashes sends Elesse an amused look.

"Should I call you Jedi, then?" she asks once they have a moment alone (she is possibly delaying talking to her children).

Permalink Mark Unread

"For now," she says in a slightly amused tone of voice. "That is more or less the capacity in which I am acting, at the moment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

"Ashes is what I actually go by, nowadays. I - disliked the name I originally became famous under."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is fair, but names do have power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only what we give to them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To a certain extent, I suppose. I imagine you have more familiarity than I."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums.

"Of course, refusing to acknowledge something gives it its own kind of power, but..." She shrugs. "Someday I'll defang it entirely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish you luck with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks." Smile. "Perhaps I'll share it sometime, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you ever feel comfortable."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "Not making any promises."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

"Did you want to meet the twins?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"Yes. I - think I'm ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Last chance to change your mind about how you would like me to introduce you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses, giving it some thought, and then takes a deep breath.

" - I don't want to keep - everything a secret. And I want to be open about the existence of the secrets I have."

"It's - alright, to introduce me as their mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well. Let us go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to see the twins.

Elesse introduces her as Ashes, wandering adventurer, the one who shut down the tomb, and their mother.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow! That's - that's wow," Luka says, grinning. "I'm Luka."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Leya," his sister says, voice more even, more considered. Her Name's heavier than it'd been a few weeks ago.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those are good names," she says, voice soft. "It's - I'm glad to meet you two, properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm - really happy to meet you too - "

Permalink Mark Unread

Leya shifts a bit, almost crossing her arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

She notices, of course.

"Have you two - been well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. My aunt and uncle were really great, and - " He grows sad, briefly. "They died a bit back, but - I met Leya just after that. It's been - I've been learning a lot, lately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My - adoptive - parents are still alive," Leya says. "They raised me very well. They've taken a shine to Luka."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I'm glad."

"I'm - sorry I wasn't able to raise you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leya raises an eyebrow, considering her.

"Why didn't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was in - a tough situation. That..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to give us - all the details. Lots of people get in tough situations." He sends Leya a hard glance. "It's normal. And neither of us suffered for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles a bit. "You're good kids." And, glancing at Elesse: "Thank you for - bringing us together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am happy to be able to provide this opportunity. What you make of it is up to you. All of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles fondly.

And, to her children: "You two don't - need to accept me back into your life if you don't want to. Or you can take your time. I - know I wasn't ever around. And I know I'm - sometimes a difficult person, and one with a lot of secrets."

She pauses.

"Still, I'd... Like to get to know you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles back. "I want to get to know you, too." And he glances at Leya.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs.

"I - don't long for a mother or anything. My mother Queen Breha is amazing, and I love her. And I love my father, too."

"But... I wouldn't mind getting to know you, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, accepting.

"I'm not looking to replace them. They raised you. They're your parents, as much as or more than I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leya nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And having three parents is also completely normal," Luka says, firmly. "Lots of people have three parents. Sometimes four, even."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "You must know some interesting crowds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just people. They're all interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'll let you and our Jedi here handle any sweet talking." She grins at Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you'll step in when someone needs knifed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I provide all the best alternative charm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that what you call it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ties in well with the rest of my good qualities."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.

"Are you three staying nearby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not in walking distance, but it isn't a far flight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If none of you would mind, I might join you on your adventures for a bit...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't object. Though the two of you are going to be way above our level, usually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind helping out on easier runs." She glances at Elesse. "And it sounds like we're mostly hoping to focus on a more classic charm, anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'll help with that, where possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your graciousness is appreciated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a shining example of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do the two of you have anything left to wrap up here?" she asks the twins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luka glances at his sister then shakes his head. "And I don't think they really need us for reconstruction or anything..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us return, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Leya provides transportation back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, there's plenty of spare space for guest rooms, so Ashes has somewhere to settle. Still, she seems restless.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "I don't think so. Just - I have a lot to think about." Wry smile. "And I'm not much used to staying still. In general or while I think..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could show you the route I use for running."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's this way, around the castle and into the woods..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

She enjoys the run, relaxing more once away from everyone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't press, but remains open if Ashes wishes to speak.

Permalink Mark Unread

Light and idle conversation, mostly. She tells a few (obviously very recent) stories about places she's been and people she's met and often helped. She's distracted frequently, though, clearly thinking - but she doesn't seem ready to completely bare her heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes sense. Trust takes time.

Elesse reciprocates with the same tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ashes appreciates that. (Appreciates her...)

She spends dinner and after mostly talking to her children, though she runs into some awkwardness with not being able or willing to talk about her past.

She thanks Elesse again before heading off to bed, smile soft.

Permalink Mark Unread

(She's beginning to understand her alts' point of view a little better.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ashes spends a lot of the next few weeks with her children, stepping in to train both. She clicks a bit better with Leya there, giving her enough common ground with her daughter that Leya starts relaxing around her.

She doesn't neglect her friendship with Elesse, though - she's knowledgable about the world and its history and peoples, and apparently enjoys getting into debates about historic minutiae (and enjoys telling stories about any aspect of the world Elesse expresses interest in). She makes time to run with Elesse every day. She trains her own martial abilities, too, at first in private and then allowing Elesse and her children to watch.

And then Leya's adoptive parents request Elesse for a diplomatic mission to a somewhat distant kingdom - while requesting Leya for another, in the opposite direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to come with either of us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "I'll join you, if you don't mind. Leya should be able to handle herself, with or without Luka's help, and it's - good for them to have their own successes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will be glad of the company, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles back. "Good. I'm ready to set out when you are, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Which will be soon enough.

It's too far for even Ashes to fly the whole way, and - she prefers getting at least a pulse of the places in their path. They can zoom over the wilderness in between settlements, though, narrowing in if they see problems.

Permalink Mark Unread

That suits Elesse fine. It's similar to how she would travel in her native universe, in fact. If one substitutes 'planet' for 'settlement' and 'the cold blackness of the interstellar void' for 'wilderness'. And there would be a spaceship involved.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins. "Spaceships... That sounds exciting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anakin thought so as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "I always wanted to visit the stars, especially when I was a kid..." And, a small smile. "Perhaps once we get you back to your universe you can show me around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be pleased to do so."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and lifts them both into the air.

Ashes very clearly enjoys flying under her own power, zooming through the air.

The first place she stops them is a mid-sized (for the local region) town. The atmosphere's tense, but people don't look too wildly impoverished or beaten down. More angry than anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is there a noticeable cause for their anger?

Permalink Mark Unread

There seem to be at least two factions of people who are angry at each other - there seem to have been some escalating incidents lately, starting with thefts and recently escalating to violence, feeding into what sounds like an old feud.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah. Messy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we won't have a boring rest stop." She glances out at the crowds, eyes scanning people, mentally taking the pulse of who's who. "An inn would probably be a good place to get gossip... Find out who's neutral in all this - and I don't think either faction's in charge. The anger'd be different in that case..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I agree, though I am not sure how amenable this will be to a quick resolution. This sort of problem tends to... fester."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "We might be able to diffuse some of it - towns like this often lack a judge, and will often call on outsiders to settle disputes - but that's a patch, not a cure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps there will be a pair of star-crossed lovers to unite. That is how the tale usually goes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "It'll give them a motive to fix this themselves, at least; I'd rather not hold their hands through every bit of healing anyways..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would likely take longer than we have to spare."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, too. But even if it was fast..." She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

To the inn.

Permalink Mark Unread

She charms the bar keeper and a few others, idly getting a better idea of what's doing on. The feud's not flared up enough to threaten them while they stay the night, and there is in fact a local mayor trying to broker peace who's been looking for trustworthy-seeming outsiders to help defray the situation a bit. Two Great people are more than they could've hoped for; the innkeeper's cautiously optimistic people would keep to whatever judgement at least for a while.

Ashes has a good bit of insight into local culture - they won't be able to magically fix things, and proper trials would take forever and haven't been going anywhere anyways given a lack of proof, but Ashes's suggestion that both groups help each other out "charitably" for damages each side's taken goes over decently enough.

They're able to keep moving the next day, and Ashes picks up the pace enough to make up for any time lost; she seems well rested, at least.

Being asked to sit in judgement seems pretty common, actually, though most arguments they're asked to hear are less tense (and one, a building war centered around a prince accused of murdering the other side's princess, is more tense; Ashes manages to prove to both sides that they're being played by a third, an arms dealer, convincing them to ally, and mentions off-handedly to Elesse having once fought both groups in separate battles, long ago, though they clearly don't recognize her). Ashes tells stories about the peoples and landmarks they pass as they go.

There's a few tombs that've surged that they end up called on to fight, too - more than is typical, apparently, enough so that Ashes is quietly concerned. Several are powerful enough to actually seriously challenge them, too - one big enough that when they get to their destination the local King is willing to give them several concessions if they'll deal with it, as all of his loyal knights and even Great mercenaries who have drifted through have failed.

They're able to clear it out without significant injury. Ashes shows off more than she has before - she's an immensely talented fighter, and clearly enjoys the fights.

And then Ashes lays the tomb to rest as she has all the others, staggering as she finishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is there to catch her, wrapping an arm behind her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ashes ends up collapsed fully against her, groaning a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps her upright.

"This process seems draining for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nnnn. Is." She leans on Elesse a bit. "Normally - not that much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This one was rather larger than the others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Huff. "Think it was a summoned Hero or Villain, once - especially since there's marks it'd been quiescent for a while. Only other one that's ever hit me this hard was a summoned Hero, though that one knocked me out for a bit..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps you could teach me to quell tombs and I can help, in the future."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "That'd be nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you feel competent to walk out, or should I carry you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs, tries to put her weight fully on her legs, only for them to tremble.

"I think I'll need either a good rest or to be carried, yeah..." She makes a face at her knees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse deftly dips to scoop Ashes up into a princess carry.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs a bit, leaning her head on Elesse's shoulder, shifting her balance to help. "I'm a mess, aren't I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She begins walking out, cradling her passenger carefully.

"A touch over-ambitious, perhaps. I have certainly seen worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know about over-ambitious; it worked, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Asking for help is permitted, even before you reach the limit of your capacity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having someone to ask is - new," she says, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums, thoughtfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All the more reason to start practicing."

Permalink Mark Unread

She just smiles and rests her head on Elesse's shoulder. "I'll give it a shot, perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks.

And, after a little bit, as they near the edge of where the tomb had been -

"I... Think there's something I'd like help with, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet, for a few moments, then -

"The Name I took when I arrived in this world was The Villain of This Story."

It's a heavy, powerful Name. One with teeth.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't let her stride falter.

"Thank you for telling me. My name is Elesse Vendar."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, softly. "A good name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am somewhat fond of it myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"Thank you," she says, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I must admit I somewhat anticipated this. Based on... patterns I have observed in the multiverse at large."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. She hasn't been asking about her alts, but... She's not too surprised.

"The world references the previous person it stole when selecting a new one. Chooses someone to - I suppose foil them interestingly."

"That's also likely why it pulled over an adult, this time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am less irked by this than I used to be, having gotten to know you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I'm more hopeful than I used to be, having gotten to know you," she says, voice somewhat teasing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are quite well paired, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One good thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A diamond in the heart of every star."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's pretty much radiating fondness.

"I'd like your help," she says, softly, "With overthrowing this world's system. Leaving it behind, defying fate, however it could be framed... I don't want to be a Villain and a Hero."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is the ending I would prefer as well. The power behind this world does not deserve us."

Permalink Mark Unread

She rests a hand over Elesse's.

"No. It doesn't."
