All in vain; my wayward lyre
de-canonized original ending
Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet looks to Isaac for a moment before dismissing him and walking into the house.

"I just came from my father's funeral, as you well know. Obviously I'm not selling anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't exactly seem to be grieving. Am I supposed to ask you to sit down?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I'm just used to death by now. I seem to react differently every time... maybe its a werewolf thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A werewolf thing. Isaac, is this one of your friends? Did you think you were going to have fun putting one over on your old man?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Forget about that. Let's talk about Matt instead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Matt who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yeah. I suppose I was just kidding myself. I really thought I could control myself here. Which is so fucking laughable. But fuck, you're really going to make this easy, aren't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems to have elected for running over talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chasing him has its appeal, but now is not the time.

She grabs him and throws him against the wall.

"We aren't done."

Permalink Mark Unread

His son has also elected for the same strategy.

He runs for the front door.

Permalink Mark Unread

She moves in front of him. Humans are so slow.

"Isaac. I'm not going to kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not entirely clear that he trusts her on that front.

He doesn't do much more than stay very still and stop breathing, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just leave us be! We haven't done anything to you, or this Matt!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Matt..." mutters the completely still statue.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really don't remember?" She pauses and laughs. "How many lives have you ruined? This house stinks of fear. Your son is a fucking trainwreck and YOU MURDERED HIM. You fucking stood by as he drowned and then did nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

He realizes who she means. A bit too late.

"I tried my best- I didn't realize until they had already pushed him in. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not good enough. Too little, too late." She looks at Isaac. "You're going to want to turn away for this."

Permalink Mark Unread

He does as the lady asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, please- Isaac, don't you dare turn away. Isaac!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll never hurt him ever again. He'll never have to look at your face and remember. You'll just be dead flesh. Nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her transformation is different. It feels good, powerful.

She's on him in a moment and tears into him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon enough, the alpha of Beacon Hills has finished off her prey.

There's still a weak, vulnerable human within reach, if she wants more...

Permalink Mark Unread

He's pathetic. Weak. She can fix that.

She bites him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Predictably, he might need a while to recover from that.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll find him again. Later.

For now, the day is hers. This town is hers. She's powerful. More powerful than she's ever been.

She breaks open the door and runs.

Permalink Mark Unread

The town is hers. The people are hers. Everything is hers.

Permalink Mark Unread

The alpha heads towards the woods, she needs more blood. More meat. She's so hungry.

So she hunts.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are many, many sources of blood in the woods. Some are human.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. This is her town, her territory. And she's so so hungry.

She eats her fill.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of her classmates elect to attend a party.

Permalink Mark Unread

The alpha goes looking for whats hers.

Permalink Mark Unread

His scent is familiar now. He's easy to track.

The house is larger than most in this town, and it's not exactly quiet. The entire building looks appropriately sinister, with sourceless organ music, pale green light, and various gory tableaus.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet changes back to human, Matts close presence helping her focus.

She's covered in blood... and naked. She looks around for something to cover herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is a women's small t-shirt on the front lawn of the Washington house. It's soaked in a particular bodily fluid that she might prefer not to smell too deeply.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, she's not touching that.

Instead she sneaks inside the house through a window and into what she hopes is a bedroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Based on the sounds coming from this window, she might like to try the next one over.

Permalink Mark Unread

That works too.

She does that.

Permalink Mark Unread

This room is empty of humans, though there are some plastic cups of beer adorning it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Classy.

She looks around for some clothes or even a large sheet. Going further into the house naked seemed like more trouble than it was worth.

Though she could say she was "dressed" as Lizzie Borden with the amount of blood she was covered in.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's nothing lying around besides a neatly made bed, but she can try the closet.

Permalink Mark Unread

The bedsheet would work but she tries the closet first.

Permalink Mark Unread

The closet contains long, pastel skirts and pink and purple tops in various styles; there's a simple purple t-shirt that might be only slightly tight on her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Not really her style, but she cant really afford to be picky... Juliet quickly gets dressed in a skirt and the purple top.

She ignores the blood for now, it's Halloween, nobody is really going to question it. Still. She needs to find Matt and leave quickly. She's fucked everything up so much. Getting out of town tonight is her only option.

Juliet takes a deep breath and leaves the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's an entire party to wade through.

The host spots her, and heads in her direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet can be friendly. She actually likes Josh.

She meets him half-way.

"Diaz, hey. The house looks so great, sorry I wasn't able to pitch in. Probably should have asked my cousin to schedule the murder of my dad till after Halloween. Would have been much more convenient. And suitably dramatic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problemo. We can schedule my dad's murder when you need something. Do you want a beer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I'm on a roll today, apparently. So if your dad needs murdering now is the time to tell me." She pauses. "A beer would be great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sweet. Do I suggest targets?"

He retrieves a beer by shouting "Beer!". A can is thrown at him. He hands it to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm open to suggestions. Don't have much time though. I'll be leaving town soon."

She drinks the beer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know the chem teacher? Mr. Harris. He can go. No one would really miss him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm surprised he's lasted this long, to be honest. The amount he antagonizes everyone in the school I thought he would have been killed already. Anyone else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I think that's everybody. Where're you headed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No idea. Away, somewhere remote and where I can figure everything out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smart girl. Mind if I come along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet! You came. I'm glad you could make it."

Matt comes up to them, drink in hand. He gives it to Juliet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made it." She takes it, kisses him and then drinks it all. "Josh wants to run away with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can bring him along if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites her lip.

"Yeah. But also. I kinda- we sort of need to leave now. Tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Whatever you want. Should I pack, or are we being spontaneous?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just murdered Isaac's dad and maybe three other people. Spontaneity might be wise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a driver who won't ask questions. We can ditch him at the border."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which border, Oregon? We don't even really know you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're totally willing to jump on board and follow us? I'm covered in blood. Other people's blood. I am a werewolf and literally just ate a bunch of people. On purpose. Do you really want that in your life?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you trying to turn me off here? Gotta say, I'm very turned on."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Juliet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm really not joking here. I can't tell if you're joking. If you think this is some sort of Halloween prank thing. And contrary to everything going on with whatever my face is doing right now, I am freaking out. And I have blood all over me. I just killed people and I don't feel bad about it. Because he deserved it and I was hungry and this is my town."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lucky bastard. Have a good night, kiddos."

He wanders off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm sorry I didn't find you sooner. Are you all set to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This isn't your fault. All of this is on me. I screwed up and- I- maybe I should go alone? This is so fucked up and I did this to myself. You shouldn't have to deal with this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not abandoning you. Never. Just meet me at my house in thirty minutes, okay? I'll be ready to leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses him.

"This is going to end badly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can go with me if that's the problem, I just didn't want my parents to get suspicious when we're so close."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not that. You can go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. We can talk more about this later. If I don't go with you tonight, I'm going to regret it for the rest of my life."

He kisses her briefly, on the lips, and goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Juliet watches him go.

Then looks around the party, very uncomfortable.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one else approaches her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Juliet doesn't really want to be here anyway...and she probably shouldn't interact with anyone else in the state she's in.

She goes outside, away from people.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's someone standing outside.

He's at a distance, standing just at the edge of the forest, but she can see him. She can smell him.

He's a werewolf.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. She's not really suprised.

"You're not one of mine," she says at a normal volume.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not. My sister was the alpha in town, until hunters set us on fire. I came because I wanted to get in on the ground floor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need power then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do."

He steps closer.

"I've heard some interesting stories about your recent conquest. Are congratulations in order, or condolences?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bit of both, I think." She pauses. "I don't have a lot of control. Right now. Well. Not ever, really. A lot of power though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He steps closer.

"Are you sure you can learn how to use it? I can offer the voice of experience. I've been around the block a few times."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the time for learning has passed. Do you think you could kill a two hundred year old Wendigo? Or would you need more power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A beta couldn't finish the job. I could always use more power."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up at the sky. "If I give that to you, make you an alpha.. would you kill him for me? He'll come after you regardless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can outsmart a wendigo."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hmms. "I turned two people this week. They haven't changed yet, obviously. But I don't want you to hurt them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have some experience with packs. I can at least give them a head start."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suppose that might be enough." She laughs. "Stefan told me all the Hales were dead. I kind of wish you'd found me sooner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm here now."

He reaches a hand out, gently touching her neck.

"How do you want to do this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should make it hurt. Do you need me to transform? It's different now. I don't know how that will affect you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, it's easier like this."

His claw slashes her neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

It was easy.

Permalink Mark Unread

The alpha of Beacon Hills seeks revenge.
