peace is a fiction of our faith
Occlus meets a redeemed Darth Vader
Permalink Mark Unread

Neither she nor Luke can sleep. Luke, due to a vision of Obi-Wan saying goodbye. Anakin, due to...

Well.

She hasn't been sleeping through the night for a long while.

Her body doesn't hurt as much as it used to. She still has prosthetic limbs, still needs mechanical assistance to breathe. She's still a prisoner in her own body.

A prisoner in her own mind, almost, though not numb like she was as Vader. More... scrubbed clean.

She hates that the New Republic's selected Coruscant as their capitol. She hates herself even more for following Luke here. Hates that she can almost feel Palpatine looming over her, still -

Something starts beeping. Anakin mumbles an apology to Luke, fumbles a bit, and -

One of the old Imperial frequencies. One of Palpatine's old frequencies. Something wrong with a facility.

This...

Will be a problem.

Anakin paces a bit, argues with Luke, indirectly argues with Leia -

Ends up winning the opportunity to go alone. Leia and Luke are needed for a diplomatic mission, anyways.

She takes a small ship, sets in her coordinates, and leaves to investigate the facility within a few hours.

Permalink Mark Unread

The system she's heading to is barely a footnote in the star charts. Resource-poor and off the main trade routes, for all that it's nestled comfortably in the Mid Rim. Surveyed once some fifty-four years ago and promptly forgotten again, not worth the effort of colonization.

On the second planet (lightly forested, large tracts of steppeland), she finds her destination. A temple, stone, old, steeped in the dark side until it hangs over the area like a shroud. There's a weed-covered landing pad nearby, and a doorway into the interior of the building that almost seems to be pulling at her.

(...and a faint sense that there's something familiar here...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Great.

Not too surprising, though. She doubts this'll be a boring trip...

She can't quite place the sense. It's - like something out of a terrible dream. An old vision?

Cautiously, Ani makes her way forward, alert for traps, alert for little nudges in the Force...

Permalink Mark Unread

The walls of the temple are bare, the lines clean and flowing. Were it not for the feeling in the air and the sure fact that she knows who hid this place from the galaxy, this mightn't be a Sith temple at all.

Further in, she sees rooms with racks of datapads, strange objects and esoteric sculptures, arranged more like they're in storage than on display. Unaccountably, she's reminded of the rooms she and Elesse shared, before.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's really not liking this trip down memory lane. Hoping this isn't a forewarning of visions. Wondering -

Why now.

Ani doesn't touch anything, not yet. She'll get what sense of this place she can, first. She keeps exploring, trying to push away thoughts of Elesse (and the thought of her hurts, so much still, like the wound Elesse's death ripped open in her chest never healed at all - but it's not the time).

Permalink Mark Unread

In the center of the temple is a large room, with the computer terminal that sent the alert flashing near the entrance.

There's a large tank in the middle of the room filled with a greenish fluid, looking like the cloning vats of the Kaminoans and others, but the occupant of this one is full-grown-

Permalink Mark Unread

-and has a face she's still not forgotten-

-and a presence in the Force that's like looking into a dark mirror.

Permalink Mark Unread

What.

Ani covers her mouth, breath catching in her throat - did - what -

She leans against one wall, hyperventilating, crying despite herself -

She's -

That looks like Elesse.

Feels like Elesse, but - twisted - dark -

What -

Did Palpatine -

(Ani wants to throw up. She hasn't, since she figured out how she got pregnant. She's been too numb. She wants to.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Distantly, there's a warm presence - concern, love, light - are you okay?)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's like a shock of cold water.

Ani -

Focus on your mission, Luke. I'm fine.

She'll have to be. Even if Palpatine cloned Elesse, or - something - maybe something weirder is going on.

She'll... Reserve judgement.

She sits there, breathing, trying to meditate and clear her mind. Ending up mostly focusing on the warm, somewhat confused glow in her chest her children inspire. The present, and the future, not the past.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mostly manages calm. (She's been getting used to crying, after all.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The figure stirs. The beeping of the terminal grows louder.

The tank begins to drain.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few last deep breaths.

Ani backs up a little, making sure she's at the far side of the room. Giving El- giving the woman space.

(She keeps her hands loose by her side. Neither reaches for her saber nor wraps her arms around herself, though she wants to do both.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The walls of the tank retract into the floor, and the woman drops. Catches herself. Stands.

Looks Ani in the eyes. The weight of her presence is like a black hole, stronger than Palpatine, stronger than Luke- and unmistakably the same as Elesse.

"Hello there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello." She meets the woman's gaze without hesitation.

The woman's presence in the Force... Is not quite as bad as the slap in the face the first time Ani met Leia. Mostly because of forewarning, but -

Ani is determined to handle this better than she did her avalanche into and then out of the dark.

It's - Ani doesn't think a clone would feel like this. Not so - the same.

(Ani's own presence is immensely powerful, albeit a bit confused about whether she's more dark or light. Mostly a disaster, lately.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves a hand casually and blasts the still-beeping terminal with lightning.

"Annoyances. Are you the inheritor sent to greet me, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I inherited the frequencies for the monitoring systems, yes - from Sidious - though I'll admit some surprise at seeing you awaken." An understatement.

Playing along seems more likely to get her information. And... The woman feels so familiar. Almost enough to trick Ani into trusting her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"While I slept, it was as though I viewed the galaxy through thick glass. The details were blurred, but I saw the broad shapes. This.. Sidious did not expect me to wake either." Her lips quirk. "He feared it, though. The secrets he stole were enough to ensure that, even as he wrought the destruction of the Jedi and so sealed his own fate."

Permalink Mark Unread

So the woman has an information advantage over Ani. Great. But... It's sounding more and more like this woman's not a trap - for Ani, at least.

Ani doesn't think she's lying. Not yet.

"He was a fearful man."

(How is this woman not Elesse - how is this woman so much Elesse - )

Permalink Mark Unread

"I sense that you know me, though you are not familiar. I am Darth Occlus. What is your name, girl?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ani is the only name I bother with."

"You have - an odd resemblance to a woman I knew, once."

An odd exactly identical status except for the hair color and being a Sith. (...'Sith' suits Elesse oddly well.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then perhaps it is the Force that has brought you to me. Tell me, Ani, with your master dead, what is it that you seek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Palpatine was not her master. Elesse, maybe, could claim that, if anyone could, but - the thought's painful.

"Perhaps it has." Though she really does not trust it anymore.

"And, lately, I've sought peace." Mostly on behalf of her children.

Permalink Mark Unread

"An elusive goal, peace. For so long as resources are limited, the nature of life is conflict."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Occlus is really weird. She'd be less so, if Ani's mind didn't insist on comparing every word to Elesse -

"It doesn't need to last forever, fortunately. Just long enough." For her children - and coming grandchildren, if the galaxy has decided to be kind for once - to grow strong.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, then it is a question of imposing your will on an uncooperative galaxy. As it ever is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some bastards are more popular than others. I'm not interested in having my own empire, though, or in leading the galaxy to perfect peace. What I want is more personal." Galactic peace hadn't been something she'd wanted even as an idealistic teenager, after all, though she'd played with the idea as Vader, staring at her daughter in the Imperial Senate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It comes to power, nonetheless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the end, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ends are what matter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you seek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some quiet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not much different from peace, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And no easier to achieve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Generally not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would seem that we share a goal, at least in part."

Permalink Mark Unread

She needs to remind herself she can't just trust random past Sith because - the Force seems to think she's somehow Elesse -

"It does seem that way."

"Why were you sealed away?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I lived through the height of the Sith Empire, and the beginnings of its fall. I sealed myself here to await a more propitious era."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Things are currently less chaotic than that. The new government replacing Sidious's empire isn't finished, yet, and there's still tension with the Galactic Empire's leftovers, but - currently it seems like the galaxy is stabilizing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How fortunate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you do, with quiet time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my era, I was a keeper of lore, ancient mysteries, secrets of the Force. I would find and catalog what has been discovered while I slept."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Much of that was in the Jedi Archives, which - were interfered with. Regathering everything will be a project, though it sounds like one you're looking for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. My collection of Jedi texts is limited. I look forward to expanding it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you otherwise interfere in the galaxy at all? If granted quiet and archives."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if the galaxy interfered with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's more likely to if you introduce yourself as 'Darth Occlus' to people. The only known user of that title in living memory was Darth Vader, who is - poorly liked, most places."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Occlus, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I'm willing to give you access to what archives I have, and occasionally assist with searching out others, so long as you don't interfere with me or mine, and so long as any information is made available to me and my students as well." (This decision is... An unfortunate amount influenced by the little voice whining 'Elesse' in the back of her head. But she hasn't been able to significantly organize the Jedi texts in the five years since her - un-fall - and... It'd be helpful to get Luke to read something, ever. And Leia might even accept reading assignments from Ani, for all that she won't accept training.)

('Leia and Ani sometimes spar, and Leia tries to kill Ani while Ani tries to correct her form' doesn't really count as training.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do not fear I will corrupt the information?"

Permalink Mark Unread

No because you were an amazing teacher, and I didn't deserve you.

"It doesn't seem your style."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well. Then we have an accord."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Do you want to take anything from here, before we leave the planet?"

Dropping out of conversation will also give her time to contact Luke...

Permalink Mark Unread

"This cache is a decoy. There is nothing of value, besides myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smart."

"My ship's nearby, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way."

Occlus pulls her Force presence in, contracting it into a cold, tight ball. Her sheer weight is less noticeable, unless you look straight at her. It's almost like Elesse's, but harder, more sharp edges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani can almost forget she's not leading her teacher somewhere - perhaps rescued, sharpened by time - when she looks away from Occlus.

Almost.

Her ship is, fortunately, big enough for two, rather than the tiny X-wing Luke likes to hare around the galaxy in. It's nothing grand, though. A humble ship for a supposedly humble person, though rumors she's a Jedi Master have started spreading despite Luke's best misdirection.

The contradiction is almost laughable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus has no complaints about the ship. Hers was roomier, but it is long gone now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets them into space, then on target for Coruscant - and into hyperspace.

"I'm going to mediate for a bit," she tells Occlus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

She retreats a bit, into a side room. It's a converted storage room, but - good enough.

She starts by bleeding off her desire to break down crying into the Force.

She'd like to drift some, but...

'Luke?'

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke is currently in the middle of a somewhat tense moment.

'Uh, busy - '

He sends her a flash of the seven grey aliens he's currently facing off with, mostly on accident - not a species he recognizes.

Permalink Mark Unread

' - Noghri. They're loyal to Vader - '

Permalink Mark Unread

A wordless sense of thanks, a vague concept he should be able to invoke that...

Permalink Mark Unread

'Be careful.'

She withdraws from him, to not distract him.

...Well.

Hopefully he'll think to contact her when things are less - emergency shaped. (She's worried about Leia, too...)

She tries to meditate for a bit, but her rhythm's broken, and Luke doesn't get back to her in the next hour.

She gives up, and wanders back into the main areas of the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is sitting cross-legged on the couch, eyes closed.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She's - not going to bother her.

Ani -

It's easier to think, somehow, closer to Occlus. Probably because her mind's stupid.

Ani doesn't start meditating properly, but does unfocus her eyes a bit as she checks on the ship, drifting off into the Force some.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets flashes of a time not her own-

-a jungle world, dark and rainy. A grim citadel lurks on the edge of a mountain-

-Lightsabers clash, red on red-

-A ghostly purple figure-

-On rust-red sands, a girl spills blood and does not blink-

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets the visions float by - doesn't pursue them. Ani's not sure how to get the Force to - shut up, really - but...

She suspects pursuing Occlus's - history? - too far might anger the woman.

She does, after a bit, get a tap from Luke, so she focuses her mind on him, pushing whatever the Force is trying to tell her away. The present, not the past, and -

Her own past is currently trying to interfere with her present.

She might have to speak to the Noghri herself...

And she will have to investigate Thrawn, the Grand Admiral she'd redirected the Noghri's loyalty to. He will likely be a threat to the New Republic...

She doesn't let Luke lean on her too much, but does offer him as much information as he needs. He lets filter back that he hasn't let on Ani's survival to them - but he's gotten Leia roped in, and one of them will meet a Noghri representative soon.

Once Luke disengages from the Noghri, Ani updates him about Occlus, and her own - possible emotional compromise.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'd like to meet her - especially if you like her.'

His voice is a bit teasing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exasperating boy.

'I don't know about that last bit. But you can meet her. I'll need help, anyways, with getting her access to some things. Rumors I'm a Jedi Master you found in a dumpster can only carry me so far.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'We're heading back to Coruscant soon, anyways. Leia wants to finish negotiations first, but - doesn't think that'll take long, and Han's antsy.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She pushes fondness at him, and 'See you then.'

She's in a relatively good mood when she turns her attention back to the ship, the Force actually around her, and Occlus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good talk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, humming a bit.

"More or less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would like to know more about the state of the galaxy, if you don't mind. Major political factions, general disposition of the remaining Force users."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

"Right now, the two biggest factions are the New Republic and the Galactic Empire. The Empire is united in name only, since the Emperor's death five years ago, though that might change soon. The New Republic is a coalition; there's a few factions within its leadership, but they're - not single cohesive groups, more people who favor one potential for a position over another. There's also currently a lot of independent or undecided systems."

"Remaining Force users... That's pretty much myself, my students, and whoever successfully hid themselves from the Emperor - he wasn't one for competition. None of those have come out of hiding yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds halfway peaceful already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're making progress, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly helped by the lack of powerful Force users making nuisances of themselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Things do seem to run better that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The one intelligent thing Sidious did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps on accident. He was one of the empire's worst problems, after all." ...That, and her own temper constantly fucking up chains of command.

The Sith ideal is as far as she can tell a really stupid philosophy to run governments on in general.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that still true if you view his empire as an extension of his self, rather than an entity with an independent existence?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In his life, it's arguable, though his military at least was often incompetent at getting its goals. And, now that he's dead - well, I'd be delighted to dismantle everything he ever built."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A fitting end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'd absolutely hate being nothing more than a footnote in the grand sweep of history."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were you his apprentice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's... Very arguable. He doesn't deserve to be counted as my teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Comparison. My - real teacher was actually worth being called my master." Not that Ani ever did... "Sidious was scum."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who was your real teacher?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet, for a little bit.

"Her name was Elesse. She's - the person you remind me of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

This explains some things.

"A Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It suited her well, but... There weren't very many other things she could've been."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Such as a Sith?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. I never had much of choice, myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot of people don't."

"Elesse was - good, about giving me choices." Ani wouldn't have liked her, otherwise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We drifted apart after I was Knighted, and stopped talking as much, and Sidious - convinced me he could teach me to make people immortal, if I sided with him against the Jedi. I wasn't able to talk it over with her, but thought - surely she'd want that."

"The next time we met, she tried to kill me. I defended myself. She died."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like... multiple levels of misunderstanding. But typical of what I know of Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sidious was almost certainly manipulating information streams, which - didn't help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it wouldn't. The Jedi must have lost their edge, in their thousand years of peace."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Senate, too, and every structure meant to keep the peace going."

"I think they - we - all forgot that peace isn't the default. It's something you have to constantly move towards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My time was continuous war. Simpler."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I found I'm not much one for war - at least not the kind with command structures."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The key to working with a command structure is to be at the top, I've found."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even being at the top isn't always pleasant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find it so. To each her own."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

(She would've been content, she thinks, or maybe even happy, to give Elesse an empire, and serve as her right hand - )

(Well, now she can give Leia a Republic with all the shiny trappings of democracy. Close enough.)

"I'm - not particularly surprised you like leading, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course not."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, but - doesn't really know what else to say.

There's so many - things she'd say to Elesse - but -

It's both an incredibly dangerous trap and also probably not fair to just... Substitute Occlus into Elesse's place, minus the difficult history.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where did Elesse die?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...And there goes her good mood.

"Mustafar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Volcanic, primarily mining interests?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you ever observed any traces she left behind, lingering voices, manifestations?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "I was - numb, though, to much of the Force, for - a while. And had intentionally cut myself off from my visions, partially to hide certain things from Sidious."

Permalink Mark Unread

Worth investigation, then.

"I see. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you want to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus smiles.

"Curiosity. A powerful Force user sometimes leaves behind an echo when they die."

Permalink Mark Unread

This is her skeptical face.

"And what would you do with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What makes you think it is possible to do anything with such a thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try not to underestimate the Force. And, if anyone could... I've seen people weaker than you pull off feats more impressive than interacting with a Force ghost."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well. I know a certain ritual that allows me to call forth a ghost and another that will bind it to living flesh. Mine, specifically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Would it harm her at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The risk, I think, is lower than it would be with others, given our apparent similarity."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, slowly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In any case, she may not have left a ghost."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How would you find out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"By going to Mustafar."

Permalink Mark Unread

...They'll be getting to Coruscant well before Luke and Leia anyways, at their current rate -

"Do you want to divert to there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would not object."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not in a rush to get back to Coruscant. I can reroute us to Mustafar easily enough, then." She stands, heading for the cockpit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus smiles to herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani pauses, for a moment, to update Luke - he's moderately worried, of course, but...

She can't truthfully tell him she trusts Occlus.

Of course, she hadn't even trusted Elesse. Not really. Doesn't trust Leia, and Leia's the other person Ani would hand an empire to on a platter.

...Trusts Luke, but trusting Luke is somewhat like trusting gravity.

But Luke has a bizarre amount of faith in Ani's ability to make decisions that everyone in the galaxy doesn't promptly regret, so he doesn't push her.

She redirects the ship towards Mustafar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus returns to her meditations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani leaves her to it, instead focusing on trying to center herself, to sort through the jumbled tangle of her emotions - her motives -

She won't support Occlus over her children. She... Isn't sure she'd support Elesse over her children. Probably wouldn't, though Elesse probably also wouldn't make her pick. Occlus might. (If she tries to force Ani to side against Luke and Leia, Ani will kill her.)

(She spends a short while sorting through the preemptive grief that thought causes her. Ani will kill her and then feel very bad about it, probably, but she feels bad about everything lately, so.)

She definitely would have chosen Elesse over the rest of the galaxy. Arguably did. Occlus... Remains to be seen, but Ani's children are astonishingly good people so probably 'would Ani set the universe on fire for her' is a philosophical thought experiment. Setting the universe on fire would turn her children against her, so Ani won't do it. She'd probably feel kinda bad about it, anyways...

...Ani can't protect her children if she's dead, so 'sacrifice herself for' is also a thought experiment.

And she needs to remind herself she doesn't know Occlus that well yet.

Leia would oppose someone trying to create a new Empire. Hopefully Occlus keeps to her quiet library, then... But if Ani has to pick who to gift the galaxy to - probably Leia.

A traitorous part of her brain whispers she'd have to find a second galaxy for - Elesse or Occlus, then.

Ani spends a while turning that thought over.

...She refuses to let herself jump off that cliff this quickly. No falling madly in love with someone who looks like her first crush just on similarities. That would be stupid, and Ani - okay is very arguably stupid.

But she's capable of acknowledging it, at least.

But - peace and prosperity and democracy and cheering crowds for Leia, places to explore and people to befriend and help for Luke, all the knowledge of the universe for Occlus -

Ani... Thinks that's the best split.

For - the possibility of finding Elesse's ghost...

If the ghost is sapient - is Elesse - Ani needs to apologize, obviously. Needs to check whether Elesse would find being bound to Occlus acceptable. Needs to -

(get Elesse to love her, the traitor brain says)

Ani examines that thought.

...Did Elesse ever love her?

- Elesse definitely wasn't as far gone as Ani. She wouldn't have tried to kill her, if she was, no matter what Anakin did.

It's kind of an unsettling revelation how much Luke's constant stream of obvious affection helps Ani not feel - adrift, cast aside, trapped -

Possibly one of the conversations Ani has with Elesse's ghost - assuming Elesse's ghost exists and can be conversed with - is about feelings.

She finishes that thought, examines it, and...

Pulls the knowledge that Luke, at least, loves her around her shoulders, and lets her anxiety bleed into the Force, and centers herself. Not so much in calmness and peace like the Jedi would teach, but -

In love. Always love.

She's much calmer, for the rest of the trip to Mustafar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mustafar is much as she last left it, fire and darkness, both physically and in the Force.

Occlus sees why Ani was reluctant to think about the place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani does her best not to let the bad memories overwhelm her.

Quietly, she leads Occlus to where the duel occurred. " - It was here," she mumbles, staring - at where Elesse had fallen (where the girl who'd once been Anakin Skywalker had lain, crying and almost dead, until Sidious deigned to fetch her and trap her in that metal monstrosity - )

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I feel-" Occlus pauses. It's almost like hearing an echo of her voice.

"Hm. This will take a moment." She begins sketching in the air with two fingers, eerie purple sparking out Sith runes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches, tense and trying not to be.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a while, Occlus frowns, frustrated.

"There is nothing here. Almost, I thought- But the trace is too weak."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She isn't sure if that's relieving or - sad -

"It has been - nearly thirty years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have claimed ghosts centuries gone. Though not Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I've known Jedi to leave ghosts - including ones who can independently influence the world - but..."

She shakes her head. "I don't know why - that varies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are many factors and potential complications."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a field of study in its own right. But it seems there is nothing for us here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"To Coruscant, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well."

Back to the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fortunately not much longer to Coruscant - and Luke and Leia should arrive about the same time they do... Assuming nothing else changes.

Permalink Mark Unread

If change comes, it won't be from Occlus.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke and Leia make it back safely, diplomatic mission successful and uninterrupted by any further assassins, and no one interferes with their ship.

Luke's the only one with enough free time to meet them right after they land - Han and Leia are still tied up in debriefings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he will be the first one she meets.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey!" he says, hugging Ani, then grinning at Occlus. "You're Occlus, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," she says, "I am. And you are?"

She's keeping her presence in the Force contained. Not hidden, but leashed.

Permalink Mark Unread

A bit exasperated (and detangling herself some) - "He's Luke. My more full time student."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A pleasure to meet you, I am sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The pleasure's mine!" Slightly turning to Ani - "I haven't had any time to get Occlus somewhere to stay with minimal gossip attached. Still, we can talk in our suite for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it so hard to rent an apartment in the capital?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nearby, and if I have about an hour and don't know the market, yeah - I've been in debriefings since I landed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can find somewhere easily enough ourselves." Still - to the old palace she, Luke, and Leia are all staying in.

Ani and Luke share a set of rooms - one bedroom for them both to sleep in, one converted bedroom for meditation and light exercise, and public areas. It's conveniently nearby, and well stocked with Ani's comfort foods and such -

Some of which Occlus might like. Ani still keeps things that'd reminded her of Elesse in stock...

Permalink Mark Unread

Recipes have changed, but Occlus does indeed like most of these.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's - good.

(A bit eerie, but... Good.)

Permalink Mark Unread

So. What is there to talk about?

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke has questions! At a glance from Ani he only does a few at a time. Who is she, and what did she used to do?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am Darth Occlus, a Dark Lord of the Sith. I sat on the Dark Council, the governing body of the Sith Empire at the head of the Pyramid of Ancient Knowledge. My charge was all our accumulated lore, and the traditions of the past."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did the Dark Council work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was divided into twelve areas of responsibility, or Spheres. My own, Ancient Knowledge, Sith Philosophy, Mysteries, Laws and Justice, Technology, Biotic Science, Production and Logistics, Expansion and Diplomacy, Intelligence, Military Strategy, Military Defense, and Military Offense. Each was headed by a Councilor who managed their subordinate Sith and any associated bureaucracy. Barring orders from the Emperor, overall direction was decided in council, and carried out separately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm guessing - better at delegation than the recent Empire's system, more prone to in fighting? Especially within overlapping spheres?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being unfamiliar with the exact mechanics of the recent Empire's system of government, I cannot make that comparision. But yes, exact distribution of responsibilities was a... touchy subject."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ani knows more about how the Empire worked exactly - though we do have legal codes and stuff. Leia - my sister - she's been tearing apart every bit of documentation we have on how anyone's ever run a government..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you are looking for hints, I have none to give you. The minutia of governance is an astonishing waste of my time. I have no intention of entering that trap again."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles, a bit. "Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am much more interested in the mysteries of the Force. Your mother may have mentioned this."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani's explained some of Force perception but it still somehow always surprises him.

He nods.

"That's more my field, too... Or, at least the social side. I want to learn enough to take students, preferably with a - more healthy and stable system than what's been tried before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A thousand years of complacency is not stability enough?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was - mostly stable? But didn't work for everyone, and I'd rather skip the complacency part."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know little of Jedi practice. My collection was focused in other areas. Though I hope to remedy that lack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ani said you were going to organize all the archives and stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Catalog what remains and recover that which was lost, insofar as that is possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you mind me asking you questions about Force stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you do not mind hearing my answers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably won't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shall see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You weren't too impressed with my philosophizing when we met, Luke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither were you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Fair." To Occlus: "I'll warn you, he's a brat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That much is plainly evident."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He takes after me rather wonderfully there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall take your word for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts. "I was - way worse, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pity your poor teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

(That doesn't hurt as much as it should...)

"Keeping me busy helped a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too tired to talk back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More distracted by the latest author I wanted to fight. Elesse was - good with giving me interesting questions to get me buried in reading for a bit. But getting excess energy out was also good for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never took an apprentice that required that sort of management, myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think she ever had any other students than me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances away, a bit. "Anyways - we should probably figure out what you're doing for money and an apartment, then archives?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Assuming Muunilinst is still an active financial center, funds should not be a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I will require Holonet access to confirm the status of my accounts."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and shows Occlus the room's terminal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus opens a call to her bank there (one of the oldest in operation), giving a code that jumps her past the automated system to one of the Muun clerks. The account number she gives makes his eyes pop, and she's quickly transferred to someone more highly placed. After a complicated verification in a long-dead language, she has access to her money once again. Enough of it to buy a Coruscanti apartment block outright.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Lucky. Ani just spends as much time as she possibly can off of Coruscant, to get away from this place.)

Ani, meanwhile, sorts out what she'll need to get Occlus access to the remnants of the Empire's and the Republic's archives.

Permalink Mark Unread

All the remaining Jedi artifacts and books the New Republic found when they moved into the former Imperial Palace, along with anything of the Emperor's personal collection that both survived and looks weird, has technically been delegated to Luke to decide what to do with. Since he's, y'know, the Jedi in residence. There is a (small, overworked) staff that is supposed to be going through things, but it keeps bleeding off members to other areas, deemed more critical.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah yes that problem where they're admitting to absolutely no one that she's Vader.

That does make this officially Luke's problem! Learning about how to actually delegate and navigate bureaucracies will probably be good for him or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

 - There's probably a form for this but he instead just calls someone and is very pleasantly excited at them about having found an actual scholar interested in this! Who'll be project head, and he'll plausibly be bringing in more outside help, and well, sure, they're not technically government workers yet - he is allowed to hire people for this, though, and yes he's aware of the budget, how about we put together a grant proposal, and I'll talk to the finance offices -

Somehow he ends up with somebody else finding all the paperwork for him, a government ID for Occlus (...what name does she want it under), a slightly flustered promise from a pretty finance officer that of course more funding can be nudged to the archives, and reports on the current staff, all in the course of about thirty minutes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus will do, will it not?

Permalink Mark Unread

As well as anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Occlus she shall be. Conveniently, that is who she has always been.

Permalink Mark Unread

He thought usually Sith take on new names at some point?

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus smiles mysteriously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did; it's an old tradition, though I think I would've said, once, that I was never Anakin, or would have said Anakin was dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It signifies a change of nature. A break between past and future."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why I changed it again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also a useful symbol."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly to myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's who counts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Generally so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite. Well then. I suppose I should ask when I start."

Permalink Mark Unread

Usual work week starts day after tomorrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she has time to settle in first.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want help at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be appreciated. I am not terribly familiar with the geography of Coruscant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have free time and - a rather strong familiarity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are there any details of recent history you're missing that you'd like to get caught up on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would like to hear about the defeat of Sidious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was... A lot that went into that. The Rebel Alliance had been opposing him for a while, and started making major gains when they destroyed a super weapon he'd had built - the Death Star. Luke managed the actual final shot, after a task force organized by Leia - my daughter, and other student - had stolen the plans. The Rebels and the Empire struggled against each other for the next four years after that, the Empire mostly winning, though at cost."

"I'd tried to recruit Luke and Leia to fight against the Emperor as our own faction about six months after the Death Star's destruction. They both refused me. It was - a while, after that, before things came to a head again. Luke ended up confronting Sidious directly, and - lost. Sidious didn't kill him right away, and instead tried to turn Luke to the dark side."

"I killed Sidious for that. I was badly injured, but Luke got me to safety, and healed me. The empire's been dissolving ever since."

"Officially, the Emperor's death is Luke's accomplishment, and I'm - no one official, except possibly a prisoner he rescued. That was five years ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"His death had been a long time coming."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And well-deserved it was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very much so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What of his pogrom against the Jedi? How did that play?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She explains about the clone troopers, and the way the Jedi were drawn into war - and Order 66, and troopers turning on their generals.

She, too, played a role in that, helping the troopers assigned to the Temple clear it entirely.

"There was - a lot of propaganda, after, that the Jedi had tried to overthrow the Republic and assassinate him and so deserved their fate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That must have been a neat bit of misdirection."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think most people didn't buy it, but - the Empire had very thoroughly demonstrated you don't contradict it in public."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is almost a prerequisite for any government."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I think I agree with that, and would say 'that's why I'm an anarchist.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A principled solution."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I try for those. Though it is overridden by 'if my princess wants an empire for her birthday...'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The word for a person with no flaws is boring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'd loathe to be that. 'Interesting' is much better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I quite agree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we both manage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To be interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd say so. You're certainly not boring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kind of you to say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gosh she's pretty.

"Definitely one of the most interesting people in the galaxy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke tries to be unobtrusively busy at something else.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The competition has been greatly reduced."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think there was ever much in the first place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Well, shall we go? I do not wish to trespass overlong on your hospitality."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't feel trespassed on, but Luke might like the opportunity to be elsewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't want to make anyone... uncomfortable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I think a bit of awkwardness every now and again is good for him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps another time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems reasonable. Where to, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The nearest residential district, first. I detest long commutes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're a bit of a waste, yes."

Off, then, out of the old palace and to the - rather upscale - residential district nearest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus passes on the first building. Too many politicians. The second has no units available. The third's decor she finds aesthetically unappealing. The fourth has a penthouse suite availabe, which she takes, silencing the manager's protestations about needing to check her records by transferring the credits for the first three months on the spot.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Ani's a bit distracted by how both familiar and slightly off Occlus's aesthetic preferences are.

Still, she likes the suite. It's nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will be better when I've changed the furnishings. All this faux wood," she sniffs disparagingly. "Ostentatious."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Teasingly: "Now I'm torn between sending you Jedi furnishings and sending you even more ridiculous furniture stolen from the palace."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you don't object to having it burned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll avoid creating a fire hazard, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Then I have more shopping to do today, if you are still interested."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then out they can go to look at furniture and appliances. Occlus's tastes run to the sleek.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani's run to the colorful - sleek, yes, aerodynamic, but also heavily patterned and striking. Still, she has a very good sense of what Occlus will actually like of modern furnishings.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is, at the moment, less willing to indulge Ani's taste in decoration than Elesse was. It's not as though they'll be living together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course; her own tastes are mostly evident in what catches her gaze - especially once she starts filtering her occasional suggestions to account for the influence of her own aesthetics on Elesse, and then of the modern age.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she can get what she wants with a minimum of fuss. Exactly as she likes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after, Occlus feels like eating out. Does Ani know anywhere good?

Permalink Mark Unread

A few places - she hasn't eaten out much in the last few decades, but...

She can suggest somewhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she care to join?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd like to, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wonderful.

To dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani leans into comparing Force use traditions as a dinner conversation. (Which she's knowledgable about. She liked reading as a kid and teen, and read everything Sidious let her get her hands on as an adult. It was - distracting.) (She also has a lot of intuitive sense for and experience with the Force.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus has a very extensive theoretical knowledge of both ancient Sith and Jedi practices.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's rather intelligent.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's why she made it all the way to Dark Councilor.

Permalink Mark Unread

A well deserved position, clearly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much more so than her predecessor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh?

Permalink Mark Unread

A stubborn old fool, too blind to see the future when it came for him. His death was slow, painful, and public.

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least he got what was coming to him, in some small part."

"Stubborn old fools seem to be a bit of a theme."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An unfortunate curse to labor under."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One I fortunately don't need to deal with much anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nor I. Here's to outliving the pests." She raises her glass.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does as well. "To lives longer than our enemies'."

Permalink Mark Unread

She drinks.

"I believe I like the future."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drink. "It has its good points."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good food, technological convenience,a galaxy free of Sith and Jedi, tolerable company..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd say the company's gotten rather better, lately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That it has. This has been one the more enjoyable evenings I've had."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad, and - same, for me. You're a delight to talk to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. Intelligent conversation that shares your areas of interest is to be treasured."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a rare treat."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty.

Ani is not a teenager so she doesn't melt into a puddle because a pretty girl like Elesse smiled at her, but she does grin back.

"I wouldn't object to future enjoyable evenings, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that so? I shall have to see how my calendar fills."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you'll have quite a few intelligent, pretty girls clamoring for your attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though rather fewer who are Force-sensitive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does narrow the field, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose we must then ask how busy you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have much of a social life. There's some work, and my students - but they're often busy. As long as I'm on Coruscant I should have most evenings free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds like we can mesh fairly easily, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So unwilling to let me go, already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think by now I'm pretty good at telling when I've got someone great in front of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The benefits of long practice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly so. Helps separate out the best of the crowd."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't deny I am the best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be silly to; it's all quite self evident."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And only such a short time you've known me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can list quite a few good qualities that I think justify that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Intelligent. Knowledgable. Powerful. Dangerous to your enemies, but not your allies. Perceptive. Good mastery of yourself. Good at actually applying your intelligence. Proud and self assured. Vicious and ruthless, when needed. Grounded. Not easily influenced by others. I suspect a touch sadistic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keen observations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some people are worth observing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall have to keep this tendency of yours in mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To looking closely. I must keep some secrets to myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems true for all of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helps keep the air of mystery."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That most elusive of all important qualities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly hard to rebuild once it's been reduced."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is why it must be jealously guarded."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And pulled back only slowly and deliberately, if at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If at all indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "Though I think tonight's held enough for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well. I shall return to my apartments, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to set a date to meet up again later?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us leave some mystery to it. You know where I live."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do!" Grin.

(She is... Not going to make Occlus regret giving her implicit permission to drop by whenever but she is going to abuse that permission merrily and frequently.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Until we meet again, then. Farewell." She stands to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does as well. "Until then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then back to their respective places.

Occlus spends the next day organizing her new purchases to her satisfaction. And the day after, she returns to the palace to meet her new staff and take charge of the archives. First she'll need reports on what they have gone through so far, the estimated extent of what they have not yet touched, their plan for approaching it. Then she explains what they've gotten wrong, why their cataloging system is insufficient to the nuances at play, and how she is going to rectify that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They seem to be resigned to the new boss, and no one grumbles too loudly. They're tired and overworked, though Luke's left a report on the current budget (insufficient), tentative funding increases (moderately a good start, impressive for three days' work), and processes for getting people transferred out or in and hiring new staff, with a post script that he'll probably be able to get more budget next time that's actually renegotiated.

Ani stops by her apartment that afternoon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus not yet back. The door is locked.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums, and tries to figure out where Occlus is currently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still working. She sent the rest of the team home at the usual time.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Of course.

She heads over to the rebuilt archives, stopping to get takeout - something not messy, fine eaten room temperature - on the way.

Does Occlus seem interruptible?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's doing computer work, rather than anything with actual artifacts, so probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

She heads in, leaning on the edge of the door frame to watch Occlus for a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus glances up.

"Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello. I was wondering if you wanted food, and possibly some help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How thoughtful. I will accept the food but decline the help. At this stage, I work best alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am frankly astonished that anything has gotten done with the system these people have thus far been using. Slapdash and inefficient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the organization's been getting worse with each regime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And now it falls to me to reverse the decline."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something you seem well equipped for."

"While you're starting organization - I have some materials of Sidious's that didn't make it into these archives initially, largely for political reasons. No one's paying attention anymore, though, about where this or that text is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be happy to include them, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll get the texts transferred, then."

She does so - including notes about possible locations of artifacts they don't have to hand. The Emperor tended to squirrel things away in sometimes odd places, apparently, and Ani hasn't finished tracking it all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some field expeditions may eventually be in order, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably, as well as wider efforts to identify anything Ani hadn't known to look for. Field expeditions have been largely Ani's job, lately, around training her students.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least she doesn't have to worry about Ani being corrupted by dark artifacts. Always a perennial concern with the untrained.

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be a problem, yes... And is why Ani doesn't tend to take Luke along to any sites she's sure are dangerous.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus will want to go out herself eventually, once she has things here in order.

Permalink Mark Unread

Understandable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she have any promising leads at the moment?

Permalink Mark Unread

One or two. There's a cache of probably dangerous artifacts that's been her priority lately, and she's found only a handful of leads so far.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, keep her in mind if she finds something solid.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

...and now she believes it is time to call things a day. An early start tomorrow is required.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I walk you back to your apartment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you like, though taking a speeder might be a better idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same basic idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us go, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She asks a few questions about Occlus's reorganizing efforts on the way back through traffic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is quite willing to speak on this subject, and answers questions in great depth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani remains interested even at descents into dry minutiae. She doesn't really have suggestions, here - Occlus is clearly the subject matter expert - but she's interested in learning (or perhaps just in hearing Occlus talk), and remembers a good bit of how the Jedi organized things, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is disdainful of any systems not her own, and will easily tangent into tearing them to pieces. Occasionally because of situations their creators never thought would come up, but that is no excuse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh she can definitely help with tearing the Jedi system to pieces - from the perspective of someone who actually had to try to use it, too.

(Ani was honestly significantly a situation nobody ever thought would come up, both from a learning styles perspective, from a 'latecomer to the Jedi' perspective, and from a 'barely restrained gleeful ball of terror' perspective. She knows exactly how poorly the system could cope with a mischievous and intermittently supervised thirteen year old.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus has fewer opinions when it comes to the pedagogical side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani has quite a few - she does, of course, have Luke and Leia as students (or close enough), but some of the way she talks indicates she's anticipating taking more on at some point.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has your Republic begun recruiting for more Jedi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Not yet. I want Luke more ready to stand on his own, first, or even able to take his own students, and he's not quite there yet."

"And I don't want to refound the Jedi as they were, anyways, regardless of what name we'd be using. Knowing for sure what philosophy I want to teach is - one hurdle I'd like to cross, first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are in an excellent position to make changes, that is true. If my perspective can be of help, you need only ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not seeking to rebuild the Sith, either, but - someone to bounce ideas off of would be nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want a strong focus on individualism and independence, is my main consideration, and I'm not sure any prior system has done that - partially by being systems designed for a large group."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Such things by nature cannot be all things to all people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suspect if I set each student on their own path, eventually it'll turn into a huge medley of systems, but that's likely better than one or two nearly monolithic philosophies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A framework of basic rules, such as 'do not found a Galactic Empire'. And over time, build a corpus of more finely-tuned advice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think things like 'do not found a Galactic Empire' need to be persuasive to be proof against my personality. I tended to react to unexplained rules by doing the exact opposite as a child."

" - I think I joked, once, that if I ever wrote a Code I'd make the first rule 'do not believe what you read' and the second 'do not do anything this Code instructs you to.' Perhaps I'll merely have ideas, not axioms."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That helps your failure case, but not those who need firm guidance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

"Some way to sort students among different methods would be ideal, or at least to instill an early ability to self select."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be a difficult problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably easier while I'm the only teacher, but - it'd be hard, to make sure whatever structures evolve keep that ability."

Small smile. "Of course, if I wanted the easy path, I'd retire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you considered living forever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would dramatically simplify everything. Quite a neat solution, as long as the system's stable against me taking vacations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The trick is to time your vacations for the parts you'd rather miss."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The boring routine parts where absolutely nothing explodes, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that's your preference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm less likely to have to fix everything when I come back if I wander off while there's a conspicuous lack of explosions, too. Seems the best strategy all around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose so."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Explosions are more fun when someone else does the cleanup, I've found."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very true."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, and notices they're nearly at Occlus's apartment.

"Seems to be your stop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That it does. Until next time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. See you then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night." She lets herself into her apartment, and closes the door behind her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani brings her dinner and conversation a few more times, more days then not, then passes on a message via Luke that she'll be off planet for a while.

She's decided to go herself to the meeting Luke set up with the Noghri - without Luke, who's still tied up in some of his own political work in the New Republic, or Leia, whose political responsibilities eclipse everyone else in her family's.

That people - they're her problem. Her mistake, in some ways. She rescued them, or what was left of their people, during the Imperial days... And bound them into effective slavery to the Empire through their codes of honor and life debt.

She shouldn't have handed their loyalty off to Thrawn, Imperial Grand Admiral or no. She... Doesn't know what she could have done better, then.

But she knows she'll do better now.

Still, she senses this will be a long political slog.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, the Imperials continue to cause problems for the New Republic. Whoever their new commander is, he's good. Shortly after Ani leaves to talk with Noghri, the Imperials hit three separate targets in the Sluis sector at the same time, causing significant damage and vanishing almost before Republic forces can decide which one to respond to. All three worlds are clamoring for reconstruction aid and want to know what the New Republic is going to do about guarding against future attacks, especially Bpfassh, which was reluctant to join in the first place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which would be Leia's job.

She makes sure Ani's updated - she doesn't like the woman, but she acknowledges the need to keep different operations in touch, here. She prods Ani for as much as she knows about possible Imperial commanders, coming away with a long list short on details. No one who served directly with Darth Vader survived the Empire's initial fall, apparently, or at least not that Ani knows of - but there's an unaccounted for Grand Admiral connected to the Noghri, and several captains and such who could theoretically have stepped up.

Leia sends Occlus a message asking for any records about Grand Admiral Thrawn to be copied and forwarded to her and to the Chancellor, mentions her suspicions to Mon Mothma (citing the same "confidential source" Leia's used to cover up intelligence garnered from Ani before), then prepares to go to Bpfassh and smooth the situation over as best she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Non-Force related archival material is low on Occlus's personal priority list, but that's what subordinates are for.)

They don't have much information on Thrawn. Recruited from the Unknown Regions shortly after the founding of the Empire, he rose in rank quickly for a non-human, being responsible for several key victories in the early years. He spent much of his time in the Unknown Regions, with no records available about what he was doing out there. Ten years ago, he returned and was promoted to Grand Admiral, the only non-human ever to attain that rank, then was sent back out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which matches with what Ani knew... And is better than no leads, but isn't exactly a road map to defeating him.

Still, diplomacy calls - she departs for Bpfassh, mulling over the information she's gotten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke, meanwhile, is more than a little bit put out he can't go with Ani - the situation with the Noghri's too tense - or Leia - the Bpfassh dislike Jedi, due to some historical problem with a Dark Jedi.

Who is rumored to have gone to ground on Dagobah...

Where Master Yoda spent his last years -

He only technically thinks to update his mom before just taking off.

Permalink Mark Unread

' - You're an adult, and it's your choice, but I'd feel more comfortable if you had some help.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I don't mind company. You about done with the Noghri?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...No. Nowhere close.'

'If you don't mind, though... Can you ask Occlus if she'd go with you?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah.'

He's loosely aware Occlus often works late in the Archives; he goes to find her.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is indeed where she is.

"Do you require something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Found a trail of a Dark Jedi to chase. I don't think it'll take long, but Ani's leery about me going alone. She can't get away from her current mission, though, and was wondering if you wanted to accompany me."

From his tone, he's loosely resigned to being babysat, but thinks he's more ready than Ani obviously does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of trail?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A Bfasshi Dark Jedi had been passing through or trying to go to ground on the planet of Dagobah about thirty or thirty five years ago, is the rumor - I know there's a cave really entangled with the Dark Side, there, and one of the Jedi Masters hid out near it during the Imperial era. I mostly want to investigate the cave and the area around it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

"I'm not flying in your X-wing."

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts. "It's pretty small for two, anyways. Still, I should be able to get us a different ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well. When did you intend to leave?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not on a tight schedule, but I'd like to leave sooner rather than later - within the next day, maybe, if that's convenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be ready in six hours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can get a ship by then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall I meet you in the hangar?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me. See you in six hours."

Permalink Mark Unread

And six hours later, Occlus is in the hangar, a small supply bag over one shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke's there as well, ship big enough for two people to actually have non-negligible room secured, R2-D2 prepped to accompany him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then off they go. To this... Dagobah.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a swampy planet, no sapient life, writhing with the Living Force.

Luke guides them down to a patch of solid land just barely big enough for the ship. It's gloomy even during the day, and Luke has to take a couple seconds to orient himself.

They seem to be very close nearby the cave Luke described earlier; Yoda - the Jedi Master - had his hut just past that, close enough to mask his own Light presence.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a lovely world.

It's doubtful there will be much of anything left to find. Swamps are not ideal for preservation.

Though this planet is otherwise... interesting. She can feel the residue of both the Master and the Dark Jedi.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's able to pretty quickly confirm any actual structure's been eaten by vines. This is... More disappointing than it should be.

Still, he has - a feeling.

He thinks the cave's dry enough - elevated enough - to have preserved something.

It also reeks of the Dark Side. And the last time he went in caused some really weird visions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such distortions are not uncommon in places strong with the dark side. The Sith harnessed such a thing on Korriban to test the acolytes, amplifying fear and doubt and blocking off the sense of others and the outside world.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yoda used it to test him, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's an easy shortcut to artificially increase stress and see how the candidate reacts under pressure, while still maintaining some form of control over the environment.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, thoughtful.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can dampen the effect, if you would like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah. That'd probably make the place easier to explore..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does, speaking from experience."

Occlus holds out her hand in the direction of the cave and her eyes flash purple for a moment. The noxious sense emanating from the cave diminishes.

"There."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

He starts forward, considering the cave. It feels less - overwhelming, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus follows him in, alert for signs the cave is more than it appears.

It is, alas, exactly what it appears: a cave in a swamp, with secret history to reveal. No visions are revealed to them, either, with Occlus exerting her power. Beyond the cave is an open area, flattish and relatively dry. There's a brown patch in the middle.

"This is where the Dark Jedi died."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, slowly, stepping around it.

There's - something here, he thinks, and Artoo's sensors agree with his hunch.

In the back, maybe - still ahead of him, possibly buried here in the mud and moss...

Permalink Mark Unread

Half buried, beneath a tangle of plants, is a- comlink, of some kind.

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulls it out, turning it over in his hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you have there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like a comlink, maybe? It's - weird, though, I don't recognize the make." He shows it to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Nor I."

Artoo beeps. Apparently, he saw Lando with something similar to the comlink once.

"Who is Lando?" Occlus asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"General Lando Calrissian. He's an old friend from the Rebellion days. He's decided to be an honest businessman, lately, so he should be easily findable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only lately he has decided to be an honest businessman?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. "The last few years, pretty much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now that the galaxy is safe for it again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's a bit of a scoundrel, still, but one pretty firmly on our side."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This seems the only lead we will come up with here. Do you know he is currently conducting his legitimate business?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah - he's in the Nkllon system. He got this idea for mining a planet that'd be otherwise too close to its sun..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The adventure continues."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess so."

"Don't think there's anything else here for us - on to Nkllon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, let us put this swamp behind us."

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes them that way, then.

It's a longer flight - he has questions, on the way, about her work, and how she's been settling in, and if she's liking her staff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is still willing to speak in great depth of her work even to people who are not Ani. She is less concerned about the staff, taking note of individual personalities only when they especially help or hinder in some aspect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want to recruit more staff? That's the type of thing he can probably handle, if she'd rather not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Later, perhaps. When her systems are more fully in place. She trusts those there now to continue for her brief absences, but not to teach others.

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes sense; it's pretty much the same reason Ani hasn't expanded who she's teaching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Robust systemic continuity can be a hard problem. Their New Republic will also have to face it at some point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah; they have more to start with, though, rather than building something from scratch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then there are already more hands fighting for control.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a question of trade offs, mostly, he thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everything is a question of trade-offs. Nothing is ever free.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Eventually it comes down to which gain you value more, and which loss you value least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just so.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're managing that, mostly - but people sometimes want contradictory things.

Permalink Mark Unread

A terribly inconsiderate tendency.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. "Makes life interesting, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't find interpersonal conflict very interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find people interesting in general, no matter what they're doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is fortunate for you, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah; especially since I get pulled into making judgements and all a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one ever asked the Sith for judgements," Occlus observes. "Though that did not stop them being rendered."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jedi are supposed to be wise and neutral. At least in theory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how is that working out for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People listen to me. They'll call me in for dispute resolution and stuff, which is hard but - enjoyable. I like helping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone needs a hobby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And it's good to find ones we like!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helps the time pass, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hums, nodding.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were not born a Jedi," Occlus says.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head. "Arguably not even to a Jedi - mom'd left the Order before she had us. She doesn't really talk about what happened then, but Leia and I ended up hidden with different families. I was always told my mom died, and no one knew my dad, but then I met a Jedi Master who said he'd known my mom, and that she'd been a Jedi before Vader killed her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Arguably true, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I think you could say Ani killed Vader, but saying Vader killed Anakin Skywalker is... It underemphasizes the extent to which that was the fault of everyone involved. She has a lot more agency as Ani than she ever had before, and... The reason she stopped being Anakin Skywalker wasn't that the Jedi screwed up and let a bad apple who makes bad choices join them. It was that the system was inherently fucked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it makes sense that a man who was part of that system would want to downplay that aspect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Problems are never our own fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not when there's someone else to blame, certainly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How to get emotionally healthy students is - one concern of mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will be harder than suppression or weaponization of unhealthy emotion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably more stable in the end, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost certainly, though the experiment has not been tried as far as I am aware."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's better than it having been tried and failed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Such optimism."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've gotta have some hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Either hope or bloody-minded stubbornness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Both work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And at a distance, it's quite hard to tell them apart."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're pretty similar! It's - about believing things can change, because people are good if you let them be or because you'll make it happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you let them or make them is a significant difference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It depends on how you're making things better, too. Persuasion is different from force."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can be, though you are still imposing your will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even when you're open to persuasion, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Changing your idea of what good is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, if someone else is more right. And someone else might know things I don't, about the most effective way to get the results I want, or about - basic facts about things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A flexible negotiator is is a manipulable negotiator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An inflexible politician is one more likely to court disaster, I think. People usually start wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you have the Force to guide you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, though not everyone in systems I build is, and my enemies can use it, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can they? The Sith are gone, and your family is the last of the Jedi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That won't always be the case, and - the old Jedi thought the Sith were gone, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Building good habits, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's part of it, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just be careful who you allow to whisper in your ear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, but - I'd rather get good at recognizing bad ideas, first? A malicious actor can whisper in my friends' ears, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'd rather not patch that by just having no friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could not listen to their ideas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then what's the point of surrounding myself with people who know things I don't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A fair point. I prefer to know everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure that's actually possible, is my problem - and I like to learn about people, first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not possible for you, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, mom's been impressed with your intelligence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've noticed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think she called you the smartest person she's talked to in decades."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How flattering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She likes you. She talks about you a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you attempting to speed her process along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You needn't. I have lived for quite some time, and in my experience, it is best for these things to run their course."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, and shrugs. "I'll leave off, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

On a different topic, he has some questions about how the Force was used in her day...

Permalink Mark Unread

Considerably more militaristic and disciplined, to begin with. Treated as a weapon in most respects, even by the Jedi, though they dressed their attitude up a bit more than the Sith. Their philosophy obviously evolved over time, though from her initial investigations, she suspects it was converging back towards the end of the Clone Wars (she has citations to support this)...

Eventually, they arrive at the outer reaches of the Nkllon system. There's a space station where the shieldships, giant mushroom-shaped vessels that are ninety percent heat absorption and radiatiors, take visitors to and from the planet. They comm Luke's ship asking for his slave circuit codes.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not in his X-wing or in a different military craft so this one actually has those. What do they need them for?

Permalink Mark Unread

Fastest way in-system is to make a micro hyperspace jump. Slaving the navicomputers together ensures they'll end up in the same relative positions so Luke's ship isn't instantly flash-broiled.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right.

He sends the codes over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then a brief jump later, they're in orbit above Nkllon.

"Republic shuttle, this is Nomad City Control. Please state your reason for visiting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm an old friend of Lando's. I'd wanted to ask him about something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does this old friend have a name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Luke Skywalker."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please hold." There's a brief pause. "Republic shuttle, you are cleared for landing. Transmitting vector."

Nomad City is aptly named, constructed on the backs of decommissioned Imperial walkers and slowly, constantly moving to stay on Nkllon's dark side, just ahead of the terminator. Their assigned landing port is illuminated.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lands them easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lando is there to greet them. "Luke! So good to see you again." He goes for the hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! "You as well! How's it been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've had our share of bumps, but I think things are finally- Hello," he catches sight of Occlus exiting the shuttle. "I see your taste in traveling companions has improved." Lando goes over to her and makes to take her hand to kiss it. She pulls it out of his reach, and he switches the gesture smoothly into a grand bow, flourishing his cape. He straightens up, flashing a blinding smile. "Lando Calrissian, director of this little operation, at your service. Might I know your name?"

"Occlus."

"Occlus. Wonderful. Can I invite you both to take some refreshment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wonderful. Wonderful. This way, please." He leads them away from the docking area further into the city, to a nice lounge area, where serving droids offer drinks and little snacks. Along the way, Lando regales them with little anecdotes about the work here, coming up with the idea, acquiring the walkers and funding, ironing out bugs with the remote-controlled mole miners they use to do most of the actual mining.

"-and so when they get stuck out for the daylight rotation, they actually bury themselves beneath the surface. It took some work to find the proper depth, let me tell you." He chuckles and kicks his feet back on the couch he claimed. "But I'm sure you didn't come all this way just to gossip! Tell me, Luke, what can I do for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I found something. Artoo thought he'd seen you with something similar, so I was wondering if you could identify it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Found something, huh? Let's take a look." Lando sits up-

-and an alarm klaxon begins blaring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unexpected guests," Lando says, pulling out his comlink. "Calrissian here. Talk to me."

"Imperial Star Destroyer," he says, after receiving the report. "Dropped out of hyperspace right above. They're launching fighters and shuttles."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Can we help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How many guns did that shuttle have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not many."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's another burst of reporting from Lando's comm.

"Looks like the shuttles aren't headed our way, so there won't be a ground fight. They're going after the miners. If you think you can help, get up there. I need to get to the command room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lando hurries off.

"So which is to be?" Occlus asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We didn't take a proper military craft, but what we have is fast and has enough guns it might make a difference in harrying the shuttles at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should move quickly, then." She motions for him to take the lead back to their ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does so, getting their ship ready and in the air easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus takes the gunner's chair. And off they go hunting Imperials.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke.

A voice whispers into Luke's mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't let his concentration slip from the fight, but - what?

That's not his mom or Leia - Ben said he was vanishing -

'Not a good time,' he sends back, almost on reflex.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke. You will come to me. We will rebuild the Jedi. You must-

Permalink Mark Unread

Excuse us, we are rather busy, Occlus's voice cuts in, and then there's a sense of rage as an icy wall slams down and the contact is broken.

"Focus on flying," she says aloud.

Permalink Mark Unread

"On it."

He pushes the odd voice to the back of his head, instead continuing to (very effectively) harass the Imperials.

Permalink Mark Unread

They scratch more than a few TIEs and at least one shuttle before the rest make it back to the safety of the Star Destroyer and it jumps out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come on, let's go see how much damage they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

The damage to Nomad City is not so bad, but Lando is still quite upset when they get back.

"Fifty-three! They stole fifty-three of my mole miners. That's more than sixty percent of my workforce. And they slagged another dozen that they couldn't get away with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know why they targeted here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because the Empire has it in for me personally?" Lando says darkly. "They didn't even make a play for our stockpiles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Logically, they were after the mole miners. Even if a ship that size can sustain direct exposure to sunlight at this distance, any external sensors or weapons emplacements would be severely damaged. This attack was not undertaken lightly. Therefore, their need is pressing, worth the damage but not worth simply buying more directly."

"They're not exactly simple pieces of technology," Lando admits. "We had a devil of a time getting ours working, and the company that manufacturers them is based in Republic space."

Permalink Mark Unread

He frowns. "What can they do that other, easily available on market machines can't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sustained independent operation, vacuum rated, fairly good plasma cutters..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd need a bigger ship with a hyperspace engine to get them anywhere though, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's - probably not much they'd be worth using against offensively, which should make for a narrow list..." He furrows his brow, thinking of the man his mother had identified as the Grand Admiral. Clever, imperious, proud, convinced he could analyze people through their art, someone Ani had trusted the Noghri to, but mostly on orders from the Emperor...

Cold reading someone he's never met is hard, but his mom's met the man, and one of the reoccurring games with new flight recruits is Luke cold reading people's pasts...

"Something - grand. Unusual and impressive... Not something someone unambitious or uncreative would do - tied into the Empire's other movements like a huge strategy game..."

That recent three pronged attack - the Republic's been moving ships to the region, mostly concentrated around one shipyard... There's been some other movements...

"How good are the plasma cutters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They chew through rock like it's nothing. I know that look, kid. What are you thinking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're small, right? Easy to miss if there's something more distracting going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can fit three, maybe four guys in one as long as they don't mind being friendly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm... There could be valuable mines in Imperial space in Nkllon's situation... You probably don't need something that serious and that many of for getting into even a well protected base... Though there's a few bases that're currently secure mostly by being hard to penetrate... Nothing super valuable... Could you use them to disable a ship, even a big one? There's a few concentrations of those I can think of. The Imperials would have a fight on their hands getting miners to them in most cases, though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plasma cutter in the wrong place wouldn't exactly be good for any ship... But the miners don't have any kind of shields or weapons that would stand up even to a starfighter's guns."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And it'd be hard to get them close unnoticed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you put a self-destruct on your equipment?"

"No, I'm not in the habit of sending my people out into a hostile environment with bombs strapped to their back."

Occlus tsks. "Pity."

"...Although... I do have the remote control codes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If the Imperials don't remove that - could we use those if they show back up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're pretty much hardwired. The Imps'd have to dig pretty deep to block them off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully it won't occur to them to even try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is good to have the semblance of a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The start of one, at least, though I'd rather be guessing at less..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some guesswork is unavoidable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. Fortunately on our enemy's part, too, though we're also guessing at how much he actually knows."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not think there is much more to be learned here."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - There's that thing we found."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I'd forgotten. What did you want to show me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes it out and shows it to Lando.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Not something you see every day. It's a beckon call, Clone Wars vintage from the looks of it. They used to be real popular. Sort of a ship's remote. Push the button and your ship comes to you. The sophisticated ones could maneuver around obstacles and even fight a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the range on them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not far, usually. Ten, twenty kilometers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the ship might be near where we found it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Assuming it hasn't been junked. A ship's a lot easier for a scavenger to find than a beckon call, and from the looks of it, it would have been abandoned quite a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whole planet was pretty abandoned. But, yeah, something could've happened to the ship pretty easily..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whereabouts did you finds this, anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit of uninhabited swamp."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't sound too friendly for ships on its own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be worth following up on if I get more free time, but, yeah... Chances of there still being anything to find are probably low."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, good luck, buddy. I've got to get back to trying to salvage something out of this mess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Oh, one last thing before you go. I've been hearing rumblings about some old Jedi Master come out of hiding on the Outer Rim. Just rumors, nothing solid. Thought you might like to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll look into it. Thanks." Might have something to do with that odd voice...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't get into too much trouble now." Lando grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's almost like you know me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You take care, Luke."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too, Lando."

Permalink Mark Unread

And off they go?

Permalink Mark Unread

Off they go.

Though 'where to' is a bit of a question... He does want to figure out what's up with the mystery voice, and the possibly related rumor of a Jedi Master... He's not sure the dark Jedi's ship is worth pursuing, too, but it might be.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's doubtful the ship will have any useful information, and almost certain the voice and the rumor are related. Such a thing requires training.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That anger - it didn't really feel like the Jedi Masters Ani described to me." Or Ben or Yoda.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, but nor was it focused as a true Sith's would have been. A fallen Jedi, I surmise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to seek him out either way. That - does alter how I'd approach him, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It should."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should also check if mom knows anything about him..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True, she might know something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though we don't even have a name yet - that'll be an important thing to find, first..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we are chasing rumors, then we will need to find people. A spaceport, somewhere well-trafficked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially by people who'll have interests in Outer Rim gossip."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smugglers, most likely. My knowledge of their haunts is... outdated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of my friends - Han, Leia's husband - should still know a lot of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then is it back to Coruscant?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Suppose so."

He sets the course.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't run into any hiccups on the way back.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good.

He starts tracking down rumors - and lets Han know to keep an ear out for any Jedi Masters, or people using the Force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rumor points him toward a planet called Jomark, and the name C'Baoth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani finishes swaying the Noghri's clan leaders to her side before he can do anything about that, perhaps fortunately.

(She's - exhausted, she feels like she ripped her heart out, the Noghri hadn't wanted to divide their loyalties between Thrawn as the Emperor's successor and her as their initial savior - she had to convince them the Emperor wasn't worthy of loyalty, which given all he did for them - and they don't consider brutality necessarily dishonorable - )

(She... Also expressed the importance of secrecy, for what she told them about her own status in the New Republic and her own history with the Emperor - but there's a bitter curl in her stomach that thinks no one is trustworthy, especially not with her secrets - )

The Noghri will be joining the New Republic. She'll - leave Luke and Leia to handle most of the political fighting to get them the resources they need to regain independence, to heal their planet of the scars the fighting during the Clone Wars left on its surface, and to unravel why the planet's been so long in healing - she knows, now that she's thinking about it, there's no way it's taken this long for the planet to regain even a bit of arability - but she hadn't actually followed up on the Noghri after handing their command off to Thrawn. Foolishly, perhaps.

She's restless, though, once she updates her children and leaves them to their work -

She closes her eyes, searching in the Force, and goes to find Occlus.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is in her office, sifting records of the old Jedi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani - feels really wrung out.

She doesn't disturb Occlus, but does find a chair to curl up in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus glances up, then returns to her work without saying anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

She - just doses, drifting in the Force, feeling everyone in the building - Occlus especially -

It helps a lot.

She does, however, stir a bit when dinner time comes around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rough trip?" Occlus asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"I - should go get dinner. Then we can talk, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like company?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had been planning on Duros food tonight, if that's acceptable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it's off to dinner. Occlus knows exactly where she's going and what she wants to order.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani knows the menu well enough to get some comfort food.

She - doesn't super want to get into the mission where they might be overheard, so she mostly asks about Occlus's work in public.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's proceeding acceptably well. Most of the staff has learned the system such that the error rate is negligible.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Well trained staff can be hard to get.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hard to keep, too. Though most of those still left don't seem the sort to move on easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not really surprised by that. There's been a lot of opportunities already for people less tied to the position to move on.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will need to start recruiting, soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani, unfortunately, doesn't know much about that process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus knows what she's looking for in a candidate. It is mostly a matter of attracting them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. Recruiting from among people already familiar with archives seems most reasonable, rather than people necessarily looking for a government position.

Permalink Mark Unread

Obtaining the funding to do so is of course another matter. While she could of course theoretically fund her own staff, given that they are working to the New Republic's benefit, she feels they ought to pick up the tab.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luke was trying to get better funding for the Archives on the agenda. She'll poke him about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And perhaps also about the Dark Jedi who wished to meet him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He told me a bit about that. What's your opinion of the matter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is an obvious trap. The name he's found, C'Baoth, belonged to a Jedi Master who left the Republic on a project called Outbound Flight some ten years before your Clone Wars."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not anyone I've heard about, too. It's - odd timing, also, for this C'Baoth to surface now, when we've just learned there's a Grand Admiral with the Imperials - Luke's a valuable asset, especially diplomatically, and him getting distracted works against us, even if C'Baoth isn't with the Imperials. And, given he contacted Luke during an Imperial raid... I find it unlikely that was entirely a coincidence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be sure to remind him of that before he goes running off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately I can yell at him across the galaxy. But, yes, it'd be more convenient if he didn't leave in the first place."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus smiles briefly.

"Well. I believe it is time for me to return home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

"Do you - mind if I stick around for a bit? Near you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it's back to her apartment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mood's still more than a bit melancholy and introspective, but she seems to be enjoying hanging around Occlus.

She feels more open, too. Maybe up to talking about herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is her move to make.

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems pensive.

After a little bit: "That mission I had was - tough."

"- Thank you for keeping an eye on Luke while I was gone, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was no trouble. I believe I learned one or two things myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

She leans back, staring at the ceiling. "I was - more reminded of things, with what I was doing..."

"My mission had been - there was this race, the Noghri. They're good warriors. Better assassins. Their planet was ravaged during the Clone Wars. A ship with toxic chemicals on board crashed there, and - no one actually bothered helping them with the fallout. They studied what happened, but didn't interfere. The people were pre-spaceflight, and - were pretty much helpless."

"A few years after the Empire rose, I was assigned to investigate them as a resource. They killed a platoon of stormtroopers with nothing but primitive weapons."

"I arranged to get them food, and medicine, and methods for cleaning water, and decontamination droids to clean their soil, and teachers to get them caught up to the galaxy. I then handed them off to Thrawn, and - largely forgot about them."

"Their culture is very heavily based in honor and life debt. They dedicated their loyalty to me and the Emperor, and..."

"I needed to convince them my defection from the Empire was right under their honor codes, to get them to follow me, and to stop obeying Thrawn's orders to target my children. And very little of what he was doing was actually that dishonorable, in their eyes. What - flipped the vote - "

She curls up.

"It was personal, and something I haven't told - anyone, before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was it worth it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Revealing the secrets - yes, as long as they don't spread them, and if they do - the case won't be much worse than for what they or the Imperials already had. Personal, but only a little politically explosive."

" - What happened was also worth it, too, in the end."

She huffs.

"...I don't like the only people I told having been - for political reasons, pretty much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you working your way around to convincing yourself to tell me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Don't know."

"...Probably I am."

"Not sure I trust you, is why I'm being hesitant, but I - don't trust you less than I don't trust almost anyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Since my reawakening, the people I have had the most contact with have been- you. To a lesser extent, your son. The galaxy I once knew is three thousand years gone."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I - yeah. I'm just... Bad at trusting."

"I... Want to trust you, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trust cannot be forced," Occlus says. "From either end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not."

"I do want to tell you - that particular secret, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head a bit.

"...So - almost no one knows I'm Luke and Leia's mother. I'm... Hoping to keep that secret, for a bit longer, but I might not be able to."

"The thing is - "

"Their parentage situation is... Complicated. I gave birth to them - mostly hid my pregnancy, had them sent away, convinced myself they'd been stillborn. Tore my head apart and put it sloppily back together to protect them."

"Sidious had been - interested in my pregnancy. I'd wanted to protect them from him."

Deep breath.

"I'm telling this all out of order."

"Shortly after I realized I became pregnant, Sidious told me a - just-so story, about a Sith who'd learned to create life through the Force, who'd been killed by his apprentice after passing on all his secrets. It was... Very obvious, that Sidious had been that apprentice, and that he was - taunting me, then. He thought it was funny."

"I never slept with anyone - that I remember. Neither did my mother. Sidious - supposedly knew how to cause a pregnancy anyways, and knew how to fuck with memories if he didn't."

"I - managed to verify it beyond just suspicions from him taunting me, eventually. That he'd made both me and my children."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is very still for a moment, even her restrained Force presence pulling back.

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs herself tightly.

"I only told the Noghri he was the twins' father and tried to kill them - that was enough - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I was young and foolish," Occlus says. "I reached for more power than I could handle. My body began to tear itself apart, and no amount of kolto would save me. I held together through... strength of will, long enough to find a solution. A machine, a hidden legacy of the Rakata. It rebuilt me, cell by cell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you - offering?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you looking to find? Power, knowledge, understanding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...All of them, if I can."

"If I can't find everything - I want someone to trust."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am better able to help you with the others than that last." Her lips quirk. "Actively, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

...Occlus is really close to trust, though. She's certainly hit fondness.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. Which do you seek first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "Understanding or knowledge. I have enough power to get along with, right now, and it's - not good, when your power outstrips your knowledge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we ought to retrieve the first of my caches."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you have nothing better to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I can clear my schedule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will consult a map."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I should be ready to go whenever - my only task here is reminding Luke to stay out of trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a ship?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. The same one I found you in, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will take that. Tomorrow morning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works. I'll see you then." She names the hangar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus gets the course plotted, and is in the hangar early.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani is as well, almost as much so as Occlus.

"Good morning," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is indeed. Good morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

Onto the ship!

"Do I get to know where we're going, or will it be a surprise?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That depends if you trust me with the navicomputer."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "I think I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus goes over to start setting it up.

"The planet is called Myrkr."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't heard much about it, if anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is not exactly surprising. Most who know of it do not spread the knowledge very far. It is home to two species, as far as I know unique in the galaxy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's notable about them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The first are called vornskrs, nocturnal caniform mammals. They have a venomous whip-tail, and use the Force to hunt. The second is the ysalamiri, sessile tree-dwelling reptiles. They create a natural Force-null bubble approximately five meters in diameter, though multiple ysalamiri in close proximity can reinforce each other and expand this range."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which would make it hard for other Force users to find your cache."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was the idea. It also makes it somewhat inconvenient to retrieve, but not insurmountably so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Less so with two of us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything for me to worry about other than the wildlife?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That depends on who the locals are at this point in time. Myrkr is a perennial favorite of those who would prefer the Jedi and Sith collectively not exist, whenever it is rediscovered."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something worth poking, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do not think they will be too much of a problem, as long as our orbit is uncontested. I do understand how to keep a place secret and safe quite well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In this era... Probably smugglers would want to avoid both. Though there's not many Force users going around to begin with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So either someone out of touch, in love with history, or really exceptionally paranoid. Less than one in three there will be battlestations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Battlestations would draw attention most smugglers would want to avoid... I'd rate the chance of battlestations a bit lower, but of other guests we'd rather not meet a bit higher - neutral smugglers tend to like striking a balancing act between the Imperials and New Republic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should keep a low profile, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do my best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is what I like to hear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snicker. "I'll keep the intentionally doing my worst for other people, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Much appreciated."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is so good.

"I'm probably out of practice at being terrible, anyways. Really for the best not to try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could increase effectiveness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be good to be terrible at my enemies, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought that went without saying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need some practice at that, then. Sooner or later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you will find some enemies eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm rather talented at that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unsurprisingly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "No idea why. I'm quite charming, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A very particular brand of charm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One only liked by people with good taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately that neatly delineates the galaxy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, not everyone with good taste is worthy of my time..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus smirks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute.

"I suppose I'll have to reserve my best for a select few, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very wise of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins, ducking her head a bit, and checks the amount of time they have until arrival. Hm...

Well, discussing the Force never seems to go wrong with Occlus... Ani's somewhat curious if she ever ran into accounts of battle meditation...

Permalink Mark Unread

There were usually one or two with the talent on either side. They tended to be high priority targets for assassination or subversion.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not surprised. It's a rarer talent, now, and poorly documented.

Permalink Mark Unread

What makes her ask?

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - something I used to be able to do. Had to figure everything out pretty much from scratch, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts, humorlessly. "I couldn't, as Vader, and I haven't tried - since - but it made me an effective weapon in the Clone Wars."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would imagine so. Especially if the other side did not have anyone who could match you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They tried, but - "

"The whole war was Sidious's shell game in the first place. He adapted the challenges easily enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Devious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Obnoxious, too. It was - hard to get ahead of him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he was designing the course..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And had been since before we noticed there was anything to design. Since before I was even born..."

Shrug. "I surprised him in the end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which, as they say, justifies the means."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "It was a very satisfying end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums, settling back - content, mostly.

Still...

"We'd been talking about battle meditation, hadn't we?" A bit teasingly: "I assume you're interested in hearing about my experience of it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As far as you're willing to share it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly I'd like to write most of it down and archive it, in case I'm unable to teach the next unlucky soul to suddenly find themselves bonding with fellow soldiers. Having nothing to go on - led to mistakes I shouldn't have made."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're enjoyable to talk to, though - even if you'll eventually get the written copy, I still like talking things out with you directly. Helps me think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I shall offer what assistance I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

She details her early work on redeveloping battle meditation techniques, pointing out already where she faltered or failed or simply could have done better...

It's a good way to pass the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

This sort of personal retrospective is quite rare, and very interesting.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's something to be said, too, for the self reflection Ani learned from the Jedi, here... And to the dramatic life changes she's undergone. She doesn't have any pride getting in the way of critiquing her past self, nor even much self hatred tinting her view to negativity.

(Elesse is - not as present as she perhaps should be, and not entirely from Ani talking around her. It seems their duties to the war drew them in separate directions, during this period.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Not entirely surprising. Her read on the situation is that history might have gone... differently, if it were otherwise.)

The change in outlook is also interesting; she knows of no other cases that have unfolded in quite the same way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've always defied the odds. I - also have my suspicions about why I lost the ability as Vader..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Initially... I only ever used it with people who trusted me to guide them. Even things like Force suggestion - I've never used that to make someone do something they wouldn't. Just - to lower their inhibitions a bit around what they already wanted to do."

"The thought of controlling someone - of enslaving people who didn't willingly give themselves to me - has always been... Abhorrent, really. The clones - my girls - trusted me pretty utterly, until Sidious overrode their personalities."

"They would have consented, after, but - only because of the brainwashing - and I'm not sure battle meditation used through the Dark can be used - well, politely."

"There's also the part where - I had a Force bond to my children, but if I knew they were alive, Sidious would find them. So I - removed my ability to feel that. Battle meditation is... A less intense version of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yes. That fits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - could probably do it again, now, but I don't know there's an army in the galaxy desperate enough to trust me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would hope that is not needed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. It'd been a really nice feeling, though. I bet I could use it out of battle, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To what end?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd have to find something that needs coordination, I guess. Nothing as fun as fighting springs to mind, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most other activities are either dull or undertaken in smaller groups."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I doubt the Senate would agree to help on creating bills they all like in a reasonable time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nor would their constituents, I imagine. Even if you could explain the mechanics to the Senators, the larger population would never understand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Politics is dreadfully complicated, it seems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like to leave it to others as much as possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A sensible preference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. And much more achievable now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For me as well - for once I'm actually content there's at least two reasonable, competent people in the government."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems at once both a low and high bar to clear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a bar that should be low, yet somehow almost no one manages to clear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do have two children, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, and they're reasonable, competent people, despite thinking governing's a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one's perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they had to have one flaw, I suppose that's a reasonable one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Significantly better than some others I can think of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can think of some pretty bad flaws, honestly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure we both can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately, all of us compensate for our flaws rather well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, and turns to settle into a calmer meditation than usual for most of the rest of their trip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, they reach their destination. Myrkr is largely temperate and forested, with seven or eight major settlements on the outskirts of the long tracts of wood, though the ship's scanners are somewhat grouchy about giving that information up.

"The trees have an unusually high metal content in their leaves," Occlus says. "It tends to interfere with scans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Convenient for hiding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another shroud over this world," Occlus agrees. "Our destination is... here," she indicates the landing coordinates. "And it seems we will have company." There's a small base built into a clearing nearby.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing's ever trivial, is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing worthwhile. Ah, they're hailing us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might as well see who they are."

She accepts the hail.

Permalink Mark Unread

The image of a middle-aged man, with long hair and a short, well-groomed beard appears on the holocomm.

"Hello, New Republic shuttle Crimson Jewel. This is Talon Karrde. You seem to be on a course for my little vacation retreat, so I thought I'd ask what you're doing in the corner of the galaxy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Taking a vacation ourselves. It is a rather beautiful planet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," he agrees, "Though not often very popular with Jedi such as yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's well informed. Observant. 'Jedi' is not an unreasonable guess to someone watching her relationship to Luke, even if they haven't been advertising she's his teacher. Still...

"I'm an unusual sort."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I see." He smiles. "Can I offer you the hospitality of my home? A place to rest after your trip, a guide for your expedition? My people know the forests quite well."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at Occlus, raising an eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somewhere safe to set out from and return to would be quite welcome. We'll have to consider the matter of a local guide a bit longer, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. There's a landing area here," he sends coordinates, "though I dare say you can see it from up there well enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, thanks."

She turns to focus on bringing the ship in to land.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is, contrary to Karrde's assertion, not entirely visible from above, being mostly shaded by the trees. There are several mid-size freighters and a few one- and two-person fighters, but there's still room enough for her shuttle.

Karrde himself is waiting by the edge of the landing area closest to the compound, with a red-haired woman and two vornskrs on a leash.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

The vornskrs snap and hiss at Ani, and more strongly at Occlus.

"Easy, Sturm, Drang," Karrde says. "Chin, come take them." One of the workers ambles over and takes the leash, pulling the two away with muttered soothing nonsense and a little bit of effort. "I apologize for them. They're usually better behaved around guests; removing the tails has that effect. I'm Talon Karrde." He gestures to the woman beside him. "My associate, Mara Jade. Welcome to Myrkr."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She recognizes Mara Jade.

Well, that's an interesting complication. Still, she's hardly one to criticize where someone else has made their new life.

"It's alright. I think most animals hate me, honestly. I'm Ani, and this is my associate, Occlus. Thank you for the welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mara recognizes Ani too, if the slight twitch away and faint grimace are anything to go by.

"A pleasure to meet you both," Karrde says. He offers a businessman's handshake.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it, still smiling, and not looking at Mara too much.

"The pleasure is all ours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The main hall is this way." He starts walking. "Can I offer you anything to eat or drink?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps a topographical map of the area. Seismic readings, if you have any."

Karrde strokes his beard thoughtfully. "We may be able to pull something up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exactly edible, though. I wouldn't mind a small drink, myself, or a snack."

She follows along.

Permalink Mark Unread

The main hall is a relaxing atrium, with comfortable seating and a glass roof enabling the luxuriant greenery. Mara goes off to procure refreshments and cartography, while Karrde plays host, engaging his guests in chatter and gently trying to probe their purpose.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani is both socially adept and enjoying herself. She dances around Karrde's questions, never giving any substantive answers, asking a few in return - mostly somewhat teasingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Karrde seems to genuinely enjoy the banter. Mara's mouth tightens when she returns, setting down the tray with drinks, snacks, and a datapad with perhaps slightly more force than necessary. She retreats to stand behind Karrde, opposite of Ani.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus takes the datapad off the tray, arching an eyebrow at Mara, who glares back in return. She activates its projector function, showing a map of the local area.

"What are you looking for?" Karrde asks.

"A door," Occlus says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mara scoffs. "There's no door in the forest. No civilization anywhere inside. You're hunting a myth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know there is a door," Occlus says mildly, "because I put one here." She points at a hillside on the map. "It seems we will require shovels, and strong backs to wield them, if you care to extend your offer of assistance that far."

Karrde strokes his beard. "I think we can accommodate that." One of his men comes into the room and hurries over to whisper in his ear. "-Ah, please excuse me for one moment." He follows the other out.

Permalink Mark Unread

She avoids antagonizing Mara. Mostly.

" - Is something the matter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mara looks down at her wristcomm.

"Nothing for you to worry about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Still - she's alert, pretty much just to her regular senses, with the Force being dampened here.

Permalink Mark Unread

There begins to be a definite air of people moving with purpose.

Karrde comes back a couple minutes later. "My apologies, but I think it's best if the two of you move off base for a little while. Some other guests have just invited themselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stands. "I'm assuming someone we don't want to meet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not unless you like the Imperial leadership."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not particularly. Should we move our ship, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be a good idea to run it back a little further under the trees. We should have twenty minutes or so before they get here. Mara will go with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Thanks for the heads up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mara leads the way back to their ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your boss seems to be a good man, or at least an honorable one," she says, idly. Not quite needling, but... She needs to get a better read on Mara.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He is," she says. "More than is good for him, sometimes." That last bit is muttered like she may not entirely have intended to say it aloud.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The galaxy doesn't have as much respect as it should for honor, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The galaxy's a rough place. For some more than others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's always been true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hn. Here's your ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever. Hurry up and move it, we're wasting time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

And: moving the ship back into the trees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She doesn't seem to like you," Occlus comments inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know her from - the Imperial period."

"Which does make her revealing me a slight risk, but... She doesn't seem likely to right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps not so long as she dislikes the current representation of the Empire more than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or until she'd get something out of revealing me. Still, if Thrawn is as involved in the Imperials as I suspect - he didn't meet me too often, but he should be able to guess who I am. It'd be a larger problem if that guess filtered back to the Republic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us then try to avoid such a meeting."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I think keeping away from him is currently more important than finding out what he's up to here - but I would, in fact, like to know that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps Karrde will tell us if we ask. And we may be able to observe from a distance ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be best, yes..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can take two pairs of macrobinoculars with them when they exit the ship.

Mara sighs. "Planning to spy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seemed an entertaining way to pass the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Try not to get caught. We don't need that complication."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mara scowls and steps back, fingers drumming nervously on her holstered blaster.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she - cautiously - gets into a position to spy on the compound, favoring staying hidden over getting a better view.

Permalink Mark Unread

The leader of the Imperials is in fact a blue-skinned alien in a white uniform. He's speaking with Karrde in front of the hall, his stormtroopers arrayed to either side in a formal rather than threatening guard position.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, that's Thrawn - she'd known he was with the Imperials, but he didn't send an underling here... Suggesting that whatever deal might be important to him...

He's observant enough she needs to be extremely cautious. There's a decent chance he might get that Karrde has guests off of him even without Karrde intentionally betraying them...

Permalink Mark Unread

Thrawn is focusing intently on Karrde, who seems to be bearing it well.

The Grand Admiral tilts his head, asking a question. Karrde pauses a moment before answering.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did not expect a Chiss," Occlus says quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's - unusual, even for a Grand Admiral," she says, equally softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He must have forgone his rank in the Ascendancy... Are there others?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not aware of any others of his species."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They do tend to keep their people close in hand. Very interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know much about them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We had a loose alliance. The Chiss inhabit a region well off the main hyperspace routes to the rest of the galaxy, but they keep watch on a wide buffer zone, upon which some of our interests were beginning to infringe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they're off the main hyperspace routes, that might explain why the galaxy seems to have lost track of them. We've been - very focused inward, of late."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Karrde and Thrawn seem to be wrapping up their discussion. The Imperials are getting back on their shuttle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes sure their current position is still hidden even from the air, drawing back a bit - no sense risking things.

Does Thrawn leave entirely?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it, with the way he gets into the shuttle and it flies away and all.

Though with a Grand Admiral you can never quite be sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm.

It's certainly plausible he's still spying on Karrde... She won't move her ship, but a person emerging from the woods shouldn't be too suspicious. She'll give it a bit of time, so she's not coming out on Thrawn's heels.

Also -

To Mara Jade, voice light: "Will Karrde want us to stay hidden much longer, do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sit tight until someone comes to get us," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's about fifteen minutes more until Karrde himself comes over.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits.

"Visit go well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As well as one with the Imperials can ever go. I did not tell him you were here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. That would have gotten awkward quickly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something we'd all prefer to avoid, I'm sure. So, I believe you wanted excavation equipment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be helpful, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Karrde smiles. "Why don't we go back to that map, then, and you can point out where exactly we're going..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles as well, and glances at Occlus. "Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods her assent.

And once the destination is confirmed, the expedition can get underway. In addition to Karrde and Mara, they're accompanied by three of Karrde's men with vibro-shovels. When they reach the appropriate location, the base of a low rise, Occlus directs them in setting up the digging operations with the ease of long practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks her conversations with Karrde back up during the down time, mostly sliding around asking him about the Imperials and their business.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's evasive, though does intimate that they've been harvesting live ysalamiri.

Permalink Mark Unread

An interesting creature.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not as broadly useful as it once was, though, in a galaxy with- what is it, three living Jedi?

Mara grimaces.

Permalink Mark Unread

Depends on how you count, really, and how you define 'Jedi.' The Jedi Order of the late Republic would probably consider Luke a feral heretic, for one.

Permalink Mark Unread

The finer points of that religious demarcation are surely lost on a humble smuggler such as himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

It no longer matters, regardless, especially with so few claiming the title nowadays.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

One of the diggers hits metal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus calls a halt, and carefully overseers the unearthing of a metal door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems we found our target."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's inside?" Mara asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A legacy." Occlus bends to unlock the door. "You should remain up here."

She seems ready to balk at that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd recommend listening," she says, softly, to Mara.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you know all about listening, traitor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite a bit, though perhaps not obeying."

"It might be better to say 'listen when someone implies an action is unsafe.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you think I'm going to let you run off with who-knows-what-"

"We'll wait up here," says Karrde. "It's not as though there's another entrance, Mara."

Permalink Mark Unread

To Karrde: "Thank you."

To Occlus: "Does 'stay here' extend to me, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You may join me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." She steps up beside Occlus. "Onward, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Down into the metal bunker. There's a steep ladder down.

At about the point where the light from above fades out, Occlus flips one of six switches on the wall. After a grinding hum that shakes the floor, lights come on, revealing a thick door with a wheel-type lock barring the way. She activates an additional two switches, then begins spinning the wheel to open the door.

"It's trapped, of course, but I won't make you solve the puzzles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Appreciated. We might be here a while otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or not very long at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One or the other."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus smiles, and swings the door open.

Inside the room there are three items on separate pedestals in the center of the room. An archaic holoprojector, an understated lightsaber cased in dark metal, and a holocron in the classic Sith shape, triangular rather than the cube of the Jedi. Its inner glow is muted, a dull red that barely illuminates the intricate tracery on the faces.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks around with interest, gaze caught a bit more by the holocron.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here it is, then."

She goes to the lightsaber and picks it up in one hand, bouncing it a couple of times before tucking it into an inside pocket of her tunic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The main thing you were after, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Personally, yes. But that is my holocron, and it knows everything I do. And the holoprojector contains maps to the other caches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All quite valuable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You may take it, if you like. It won't bite."

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up the holocron, then, after a quick smile at Occlus.

Permalink Mark Unread

The holocron doesn't respond. Not surprising, really, considering the planet they're on.

Permalink Mark Unread

She secures it in her pack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus brushes past her to take the map.

"And that is everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Back out, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure they're waiting eagerly for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mara especially."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I mentioned I was a Sith, do you think that would make it better or worse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might confuse her, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll hold it in reserve in case we need a distraction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems reasonable."

Permalink Mark Unread

Back up they go.

Mara is drumming her fingers nervously on the hilt of her blaster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani avoids sending her too amused a look.

"Thank you again for the help," she says to Karrde.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was my pleasure. If you need anything in the future, well. You know where to find me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you going to need to come back for anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. You may do what you like with what remains. The generator may be of historical interest. Though note that if you close the outer door at any point the traps will reset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... see. I assume these traps are unfriendly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sufficiently so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So noted." The group starts walking back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She comes with them, of course.

"If you find yourself in need of a similar favor, too, I suspect you know how to find me," she says to Karrde.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure I do."

As they get back to their ship, he says, "Oh, and one last thing. The Imperials are looking for spare capital ships. I'm sure the Republic will be interested to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Consider it a bit of an apology for our interrupted discussion."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Safe travels."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck with your endeavors."

Permalink Mark Unread

And then they're off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That went well enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. For all the... complications."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thrawn's appearance was - unpleasant, but I think we got more information out of it than risk. Karrde turned out to be helpful, as well - and I like knowing where Mara Jade ended up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One less thread dangling around loose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was one of Sidious's assassins. Trained in the Force, though never enough to be a serious threat. Pretty sure she was scheming to replace me. I don't think she's actively a threat, but - she's certainly a loose thread."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps one you can now tie off more neatly, should you ever encounter her offworld."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "For now I think I'll let her find her own way. See who she feels like being."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. She doesn't seem positioned to cause too much harm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I can always change my mind if that changes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to keep my options open."

"Back to Coruscant, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so. It will likely take you some time to unpack even what is contained within the holocron."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Though if you want my company on another outing, I imagine I can take a break."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

She just smiles.

Back to Coruscant with them, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to Coruscant.

Occlus retreats to the cabin to meditate with the door closed, and is still in there when they arrive.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets the ship docked, figures Occlus probably noticed the drop out of hyperspace, and lingers for only a short time waiting for her to emerge.

Permalink Mark Unread

She comes out a little while after they've docked.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Meditation go well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well enough." If she has to ask, then she wasn't leaking. Good. "Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

And onward into the city; Ani's thoughts turn a bit idly to how she needs to find Leia and update her on Thrawn's movements (her daughter is - not the most receptive to mental communication), but at least some of her awareness tuned to Occlus as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus is as inscrutable as ever.

Though perhaps faint tinge of... melancholy? clings to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Should she ask...

"Is everything alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is kind of you to ask, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "If you do want to talk ever, I'm available."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is my stop. Until next time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll see you later."

And she goes to track down her daughter and get her information on Thrawn relayed.

Permalink Mark Unread

And, after - time to investigate Occlus's holocron.

Permalink Mark Unread

The holocron is a triangular pyramid, with the tips capped in metal sharp enough to cut. The tracery on the sides is glyphic writing in the language of the ancient Sith. She knows enough to recognize it, even if Sidious never cared to teach her.

As a Jedi, she was taught that holocrons opened for you after you established a connection to one through the Force. In the less-widely circulated reading material, there were hints that Sith holocrons would respond to an offering of blood.

Permalink Mark Unread

Blood is moderately annoying, given how all of her limbs are prosthetics and much of the rest of her skin is badly scarred or synthetic. Still, she can draw a small amount from somewhere not covered in synth skin or thick scars, and reach out with the Force in conjunction with offering the blood.

Permalink Mark Unread

The holocron rises into the air and the tips rotate and split off as the holocron opens to project a miniature image of Occlus.

"A supplicant. It has been quite some time. I am the holocron of Darth Occlus. For what knowledge have you come to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite a bit."

She does have questions - she's talked to Occlus about her work, of course, and the Force, and history, and she prefers talking directly to the woman herself... Most of what she's curious about for now are the parts it's harder to get Occlus to ramble on about, or the tedious and advanced bits they don't always have time for.

(She is really curious about Occlus's personal life and history.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The holocron is unwilling or unable to give many details about Occlus's personal story, except insofar as it interacts with and shapes the broader history of the Sith. She was first trained on Korriban, beginning at age eleven, three years after the Treaty of Coruscant. Six years later she was apprenticed to Zash. Eight years after that she was titled Lord of the Sith, and Zash died. Four years after that she defeated Darth Thanaton in the rite of Kaggath and claimed his title. She and her apprentice were instrumental in the defeat of the false Emperor. She also orchestrated the downfall of the Dread Masters. When she at last grew tired of the foolishness of those who lead the Empire with her, she retreated into seclusion to await a more propitious time.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't push on personal details, then, but is interested in the minutiae of history in general.

Still, she doesn't let her curiosity consume her. She keeps attending to her responsibilities as Luke's teacher (and Leia's, in spare moments), and she easily resumes her habit of visiting Occlus after work for dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

The holocron is quite willing to go into minute detail where Occlus's personal life is not concerned. It seems almost curious that she doesn't ask more about secrets of the Force or obscure rituals and artifacts.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mostly actually saves those questions to bother Occlus herself with, and offhandedly mentions as much to the holocron's gatekeeper. She likes talking directly to her, especially about those things Occlus finds most interesting.

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems inefficient, if her goal is gaining power.

Though, the holocron muses, that might not in fact be her goal at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not my main goal, at least. Power is a path, not an end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course it is. Does Darth Occlus lie at the end of your path?" The holocron sounds faintly amused.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ideally my path never ends. But, yes, I'd like to be hers, at least in part, and I'd like to help her obtain her goals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be hers, hmm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm - unsure what sort of 'hers' she'd want of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She would want as much of you as she can get. That is her way."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I want to say 'I'll give as much as she can take,' but... I'm not without other ties. My children, mostly, whose goals so far at least seem compatible with hers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you will need to set firm boundaries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Communication, then. Fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Every path has its price."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True. Still, that's one I'm willing to pay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I wish you good fortune."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

She has... A lot to talk to Occlus about, she thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she can find the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani can clear space in her schedule pretty easily. (For Occlus, at least.) Moving around Occlus's schedule might be a bit harder; still, Ani indicates she'd like to talk - not an emergency, but might take a bit - and mostly leaves scheduling to Occlus.

Permalink Mark Unread

She might stop by this weekend. Usually Occlus takes advantage of the quiet at the office, but she is not technically supposed to be there.

Permalink Mark Unread

(She snorts).

Sure. Ani will see her then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Til the weekend.

Occlus has added one new decoration since the last time Ani's been over: the old holoprojector from Myrkr, currently showing the image of a young woman in dark robes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's there exactly on time.

She looks at the image for a few moments when she spots it.

"Who is she?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My apprentice. Long dead, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

Not the best start to this conversation, is it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was killed, doing something I told her not to. The one time she ever disobeyed..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus sighs.

"As am I."

Permalink Mark Unread

She... Very much wants to be able to offer Occlus comfort right now. Ani tends to need touch when upset, but...

" - Death can't ever be made okay, but... Whatever you need from me, to help - I'm here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was some time ago, truly. Even before my sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"It is... Also a more somber topic than I'd wanted to start tonight with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did you have in mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I ended up talking to your holocron about - the goals I have, especially around you and our relationship. It suggested talking like adults." She pauses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How perspicacious of it. Unsurprising, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly on brand for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what aspect of our relationship do you wish to discuss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses for a few moments, regathering her thoughts, then - "I want to be yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

That startles a laugh out of her.

"I did not expect that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, too. "I have to have some hidden depths."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Intriguing depths."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"I - can't be yours unreservedly. Which does mean I need to set any boundaries. If - having me is something you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are undoubtedly the most interesting person I have thus far encountered. Strong, beautiful, witty- to have you is something I would like very much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. You're - smart and beautiful and powerful and intense..."

She laughs a bit.

"My main reservation is - my loyalty to my children will always come first, though that's hardly a relationship where - possession - should factor in. But... I haven't seen yet any conflicts between your goals and theirs - both Luke and Leia ultimately just want a stable, prosperous society, even if they currently have specific ideals about how to get that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed, my focus is almost entirely orthogonal. So long as I am left in freedom, I do not much care about the particulars of the society I inhabit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think they'll try to restrict your freedom. And I can mediate, if something does come up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least you'll be biased in both directions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Might help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As for my part- I am not your Elesse. I am not going to become her. You will belong to me, for who I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. I - don't think I'd want to belong to her, not anymore. I'm yours, as Occlus."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

"Come here, then." She pats her lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps up, and swings so she's straddling Occlus's lap, hands braced on her shoulders.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laces her hands behind Ani's head.

"So," she says, breath soft against Ani's face, "if those are the boundaries, what are to be the terms? Are you my lover? Apprentice? Pet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Small squirm.

"I'm done with apprenticeships. I.." Her gaze drops a bit. Quietly: "Certainly your lover. Pet..." Small shiver. "I think I'd like that."

Teasingly: "Are you to be my master, then?"

...Of all the things she thought she'd come out of life with, a kink for the word 'master' had not been one of them. (Ironic, given all the time she spent refusing to call Elesse - or any Jedi Master - that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mistress, perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mistress Occlus. I like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well then, pet," she caresses the word as she speaks it. "Seal our bargain with a kiss, and it is done."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Thorough kiss. Occlus very much knows what she's doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ani very much does not, but 'quick leaner' and 'eager to please' combine well.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's an excellent start.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wriggle. (She has an exceptionally happy pet right now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Occlus lets her smugness leak out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. ('Smug' is a very good look on Occlus.)

"Mmmm. You're quite lovely, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I do know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small laugh. "You're wonderful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She runs her fingers through Ani's hair.

"You're not bad yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

She quite likes that.

"A wonderful pair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm." Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

Teasingly: "Is kissing all you're going to do to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you in some kind of hurry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean. "I suppose I can be patient, Mistress."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmm good. Very good. Clearly she should express how much she likes that by kissing Occlus more.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then maybe they can move on to other activities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something Ani is quite alright with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy nuzzle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

(Ani is eager for apparently anything Occlus feels like doing to her. And quite easy to get into a floaty, blissed out headspace, leaking her feelings into the Force around them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can have quite some fun. Occlus has a great many ideas.

(Though she may have to work on Ani's endurance some.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmmmmm that'd be good.

Permalink Mark Unread

That can be a long-term project.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle.

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something for her to look forward to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely. (Contented wiggle).

Permalink Mark Unread

Most satisfying.

Permalink Mark Unread

The way she's feeling - floating, happy, light - she's pretty sure there's absolutely nothing that can stand in their way. Certainly not any petty politicians or would-be warlords like Thrawn.

It's a good feeling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing is going to stand in their way. No one can.
