One might imagine him shrugging at this point. "True enough," he agrees. "Alright. I'll wait here."

And Clary is quick, collects her Skye, and is back all within a minute.

Skye takes in the back alley in all its emptiness.

"My name is Skye. This is Clary," he says to the open-air - though vaguely in the direction he guesses someone would stand if they were on their guard and waiting for someone to come out the door.

He rolls his eyes, "This is ridiculous," he mutters, and then Skye can see him.

"Alex Wayland," he offers back, now that the boy can actually hear him talking.

(The angle he's standing at now also allows both of them to see the livid bruise blooming over his cheekbone - though the injury where Isabel's whip had hit him is gone.)

- Skye smiles.

"Thank you."

"Oh good, my lingering doubts on whether I was going insane are now abided. Thanks."

He blinks at Skye, then shrugs nonchalantly, "Sure." Then, to Clary, "What, you've never met things no one else could see before?"

"Well, I'm an artist. Apparently, I see the world in ways people don't. But - no. Nothing like this. You're my first."

He smirks, but doesn't chase the innuendo, sobering again quickly.

"This'll be an interesting explanation, then. Starting from nothing and building up - you really do need to know what you're getting into, if you can see the shadow world."

"Shadow world. Which includes demons and - doesn't include 'mundane' people like me."

"You are not mundane, Skye. You're extraordinary. I don't care what he says."

He smiles at her and squeezes her hand. "I think he's using a different definition than that, Clary."

"Mm," he nods, "It just means - you don't know about us, you can't see through glamours, you don't know they're there. You live in a world without the supernatural, unaware that it walks beside you, and has for your whole life. Demons, Faeries, Werewolves, Vampires, Shadowhunters - if you weren't so close to her," he nods at Clary, "You might never know we actually exist. And it means you're in a lot of danger, even more than the your friend here. At least she can see the things whose attention she might catch, now."

"Is there any way I can see them without your assistance? You're a Shadowhunter, correct?"

Clary takes this new information and - sizes him up again.

"Not a vigilante then?"

"No," he tells Clary, and to Skye, "That's right. We're also called Nephilim, if you know what that means. For seeing...there's some artifacts. Seeing stones, and so on. Nothing long-lasting or really reliable you could get a hold of at short notice, though. Now you know that we exist, it should be easier to ignore the lighter glamours, at least, the sorts of things that disguise warlocks' marks or cause the eyes to slip past faeries, or convince you to ignore the chill of a vampire's skin."

"Nephilim were fallen angels, giants. Sometimes seen as - the children of angels, as well. Biblical stuff."

He shrugs, "Different Nephilim, though 'the children of angels' isn't completely wrong, since we carry their blood. We were made - or our ancestors were - in a deal between an angel and the man who became the first of us, to be the foot soldiers in the war between heaven and hell. It's our duty to stand between humanity and demons, and downworlders when we need to."

"And last night. That boy was a demon?"

"That was a demon wearing the form of a human, yeah. It was hunting - if we hadn't gotten there when we did, it would have killed some innocent club-goer."

"Had it hurt people before?"

"Not this time - we caught its trail before it could kill anyone. Who knows what it's done all the other times it's probably been on earth, though. Demons don't die, really, when you kill them on this plane," he adds. "They go back to the Void. They recover and then they come back to earth as soon as they can manage."

Clary takes Skye's hand and looks at Alex.

"Why are you here, exactly? I haven't done anything wrong."

"You haven't," he ackowledges, "Besides punching me in the face, and really that's more my fault than anything. That won't keep you safe from the things that go bump in the night, though - frankly it's a miracle nothing has tried to hurt you before. The Fey like sighted mundanes, and demons? Well, if you see them, they're twice as interested - and not always in eating you, either."

"And that's besides Isabel and Kay - they told their parents about you. They run the Institute here in New York. That's the Shadowhunter base, here," he adds. "Isabel's still not totally convinced you're not a demon yourself."
