Wisterias & Storms in Mass Effect

Today is just not her day.

She shoots the last mech - heat sink dopping to the floor, and kicks it away from the door. Everything is in shut down, so she spends the next few moments bypassing the security. Her credentials aren't working, which she adds to the mountain of evidence against that scumbag, but she manages and the door opens.

Shepard is exactly where she left her, even amongst the chaos. The medical coma doing its job well. Her skin is red with fresh scars, the light of her cybernetics shining through. She's still healing, she isn't ready to be woken up. But Athena has no choice. Because of bloody Wilson.

She waves her omnitool over the medical terminal and begins the process of waking Lieutenant Commander Romola Shepard up.

Romola makes some small movements, wincing, her scars stretching out with every move, but she is waking. The scan of her brain lights up brighter and brighter.

But it's taking too long.

Damnit. They can't wait.

She tells the computer to administrator a medical cocktail to get her awake.

There's a moment where it looks like nothing was happening. And then-

"Jesus fUCKING CH-" Commander Romola Shepard, hero of the Citadel, sits up so fast she falls off the other side of the bed. "What the fuck kind of Red Bull shit was that!?"

"Commander Shepard. You need to get up, get ready. This facility is under attack and if we do nothing we will die." She moves and opens a large locker. "Your armor."

Armour? Facility? What? Her last memory was getting Joker to safety before-

"What happened to-" She hears an explosion, and what sounds like an assault weapon. Right. Under attack. Questions later. She grabs the armour, and thanks whatever genius designer that it snaps to fit her so quickly. "What's the plan?"

"Operative Alenko is on the other side of the facility, in the shuttle bay, holding down his position. We will make our way there."

Kaidan's here? Thank God, a familiar face.

"Then we'd better get to him. Commander Romola Shepard." Romy holds out her hand, then wonders why the fuck she's trying for pleasantries. It's a warzone, Romy, not high fucking tea.

Athena hands the Commander a heavy pistol. "Operative Lawson. There are hostile mechs heading towards us. We need to go now. Are you ready?"

Romy checks through the pistol with practised ease, then clicks the safety off and readies it. "Yep. Lead the way, Lawson. Do we know who's attacking us?"

"I have my suspicions. But what you do need to know is that they are trying to kill you. We need to get to the shuttles now."

Romy keeps her pistol high, and follows Lawson. "Not that I'm not happy about it, but I'm surprised to even be alive. Thought I was pretty dusted, actually."

"My employers spent a lot of time, money and resources to heal you. I'm not going to let their investment go to waste."

Employers? So. Not the Alliance, though that would make sense. Alliance wouldn't spend money on bringing back a dead soldier. And Lawson didn't name them, so it wasn't public knowledge they were doing it. Shadow Broker, maybe?

"I hope I'm a worthwhile investment," Romy lands on instead, and shots a mech heading straight for Lawson.

Athena doesn't respond to that and shoots and disables an incoming mech.

"We don't have time to give you a briefing. First, we terminate everything in between us and the shuttle bay. Then you'll get your answers."

Oh, this woman is used to deep cover. Well. Shit. All right then.

"Noted. Want to get a move on then?"

Obviously.

She leads Shepard through the facility, stopping for cover and to shoot down mechs in their way. The walls are bare, no sign of who exactly is running this operation. But the amount of equipment and state of the art tech is indicative of someone with very feel deep pockets.

Fully stocked lab, armoury, even mechs, which aren't cheap. This smells like a Shadow Broker operation, but Romy can't see why he'd want her alive. Why anyone would. Well, any organisation. There's an uneasy feeling in her gut, but she keeps going. Kaidan's here. Kaidan's always been steadfast. That's why Zelda held a torch for him for ten fucking years. Dependable.

God, it's going to be good to see him. Last time was- well. The ship was breaking apart around them.

They watch as mechs gun down lab coated men and women behind thick glass. Athena knows every single name and face - their blood is everywhere. She handpicked them for this job. They die and she continues forward. Shepard is the mission. She will not falter.

"We're nearly there."

Romy's seen worse than this. But every death lingers around her, like usual. Somehow her fault.

"Good. It's hard to work this much on an empty stomach." Bang. Bang. Two more mechs.

Athena moves forward, stepping into the next room -

- the doors snap shut between them and a man steps into view. His hands are raised in surrender.

"Commander Shepard. Thank god I found you in time."

Romy raises her gun. "Uh huh. To whom am I speaking with?"

"Wilson. I'm the Chief Medical Officer. I'm the one that brought you back."

"And the logic behind separating me from Lawson was..?"

"She can't be trusted. She's the one that caused this. We have to get out of here, get you to safety!"
