Juliet runs along with him. "I told you I would! Dad didn't even catch me."

“He let you take one without any of the normal procedures?”

"I think he just wanted me to go away. He gave me a pokéball and told me to come back in the morning for a pokédex."

“We should get going, then! Why today, I didn’t think it was supposed to happen today, I’m not hardly prepared, Juliet!”

"I packed you a bag! We have a tent and a bunch of food and water and when we get to a pokémon center we can buy a bunch of pokéballs."

“Fine. I left my PokéNav at your house. We could live without the berries but we’ll need that quite badly.”

He mentally rehearses what he’ll say to the professor when he accepts his first Pokémon.

"Let's get your pokémon first and then we can go to my house. I was just gonna avoid dad, but probably I should tell him I'm leaving."

“Don’t take too long. We should have left months ago, if not for these draconian regulations with no stated purpose besides...” he continues, muttering incoherently.

She pulls him along to the Professor's lab. "Come on then. We gotta get there quick before anyone else."

He allows himself to be dragged along.

When they arrive, they’re not greeted by the professor, but one of his numerous assistants.

She stands behind a makeshift display: ghere are seven Pokéballs laid on on a red and white checkered tablecloth perfectly draped over what appears to be a rolling cart of some kind. The assistant looks a bit frazzled.

Hartley isn’t paying attention to her, though.

”Hello. I’m Hartley Rathaway and I’m here for my Pokémon.”

“We’re happy to help. We have seven Pokémon for you to choose from today, Hartley.”

They should have gotten word that they’re doing this next week, because someone cleaned out their stock already, but no, she has to do everything around here.

“Describe the selection, please. I need more information before I can make the right choice.”

"Seven is a lot. Did you catch them yourself?"

"They were gifts, actually. The professor's work in discovering and analyzing fossils has earned him a few perks."

"Am I meant to guess, Miss...?"

"Ms. Martin. I can let them out if you want to compare, or-"

"One at a time."

She lets them out-

"-is that an Arctovish? How were you able to get one of those as a starter?"

One that doesn't bore him, how nice. She hates this part of the job.

"Professor Wattieza is the fossil expert. When there are innovations in the field, he leads the charge, or they make sure to give credit where credit is due. This one, though, he revived himself. Do you like it?"
