Sarah doesn't really have much to vent about right now, but she does have fun making more of a mess. It's way more fun with friends.

Eventually, it gets late.

"Thanks for this. Same time tomorrow?"

"Sure." She turns to Malia. "See you then?"

Nod. She retreats into the shadows.

David gets home. He prepares for the inevitable lecture.

His mom has just finished setting up for dinner - Chinese take-out tonight. She does not look particularly happy.

"Sorry I'm late. I hung out with a kid from school. Dad stuck at work?"

She nods. "Just you and me tonight, kid." She mentions towards a seat. "Sit."

Sit.

"How's the investigation going?"

"They're definitely up to something. I can't tell exactly what, right now. But we're going to one of their barbeques this weekend."

"Sounds like fun. Are we supposed to bring something?"

"Just our good attitude. And maybe a salad. Which you will be making."

"Easy peasy."

Food and silence?

For a little while. Eventually though.

"I got another call from your vice-principal."

Yeah, he should have expected this.

"Yeah? What did she have to say?"

"You've been missing your classes again. You promised me you were going to try this time."

"I promised to try, and then I got detention my first day. We're not going to last a month. It's not even worth it."

"Your future rests on this, David. Don't you want to go to college? Make lasting friendships? You don't have to be in the same town as someone to be close to them."

She doesn't want the honest answer. He tries to look contrite, which is better than the frustrated rage he's feeling.

"I know. I need to get my act together. But it's hard," he whines.

She reaches out and takes his hand.

"I'm here for you, baby. Anything you need. We can work on this together."

"I'll go to class tomorrow. I meant to, it's just, no one there will like me now. I'm going to try, for you and dad."

He'll have to find something to do during class to make it worthwhile.

"You're a good kid, David. You just have to open up a little. Let people see that side of you."

"Thanks, mom."

With that taken care of, he tells her a little bit about the meeting that Sarah was at. Nothing too interesting, but he knows that she'll want more leads to follow.

She writes everything down.

"So this Sarah girl... is she cute?"

"Guess so. She's intense, more intense than she looks. Kind of like a firecracker wearing a lampshade."
