She sits drinking her sweet tasting drink and watches the patrons. She's frightened but curious and for now, her curiosity is winning the battle. I won't be like that always, but she's glad.
This is not the door to her herbology class.
Right, okay, Milliways. She's been here before. It's always a surprise when it happens though. She walks in and closes the door.
And finds a very familiar face staring at her from a bar stool.
She doesn't flinch. She's been doing so well, and she's been going to the infirmary regularly for the past two years. This isn't a hallucination. Aster walks over to her doppelganger.
"I'm Aster. Evans. Are you an Aster too?"
"I'm real. I promise. My name is Aster Evans. I'm thirteen years old. I have a sister called Rose - Briar Rose."
"No? My name is Ava."
"Can I hold your hand, Ava?"
Aster steps forward and takes her doppelganger's hand.
"Have you been to Milliways before?"
She shakes her head.
"Different universes have doubles of people, sometimes. I've never met another me before, but I've seen it with others. I'm going to ask you questions now."
She nods again. The other girl is so small. And she sounds like her. She took her hand. She knows. She has to.
"How old are you?"
"What's your sister's name?"
"My brother is named Kaleb."
"...does he have magic?"
"He's a witch. Yes."
"Rose is a muggle."
"I don't know what that means."
"She doesn't have magic. I don't like the word, but wizards and witches use that terminology."
"Not our words."
"What are your words?"
"Witches. Humans. Vampires. Ancestors."
