Multiple pregnancy has the peculiar property of producing individuals that share the same gifted or not gifted status
Research on triplets in Resonance
Permalink Mark Unread

What causes the emergency of gifted individuals is a topic of immense interest for obvious reasons. Genetics play a factor, and it’s much more likely than not that a gifted individual knows one or two blood relatives at two or three degree of separation, closer is possible, just unlikely. Not as unlikely as having a gift in the first place, but gifted individuals that have a uncle with a gift outnumber gifted individuals that have a gifted parent by a reliable margin. The obvious exception is pregnancy of multiple babies, when one of the children is gifted the other one(s) are very likely to be. Mixes of gifted and not gifted twins are rare, and similar situations in triplets rarer still, since triplets themselves...

Fernando was losing interest in the article. It didn’t site a single number or statistic, it didn’t even mention that among the global population one in every hundred had a gift. Or that attempts at eugenics with gifted didn't produce any noticeable results. Though the later might have been because the "Super-Interesting" Magazine left here was not an actual scientific journal and was just science-flavored entertainment. Still, he expected more for something in the lobby of a institution that was conducting researching multiples with gifts.

Not that he has any intention to complain, given that they also made the mistake of getting a bunch of preteens and teens with magical powers in the same room. Their hands are full enough.

And what an excellent mistake it was.

The arrival of a full set of yet more multiples is delayed when the first one stops short just inside the door to look around at the other teens in the room with the expression of a kid who's been left unsupervised in a candy shop.

"You know what, I take it back, Gabriel. Maybe this study won't be a waste of time, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

A second boy peers over his shoulder, first one then the other eyebrow rising at the sight inside the room.

"When you're right, you're right," he comments, smirking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"For god's sake you two, pull your tongues back into your mouths," says yet a third identical voice, his exasperation palpable.

Permalink Mark Unread

The room is large, but crowded, since they needed multiple sets of people. And there is quite a age range. With the youngest being a pair of boys that are nearly identical except for - oddly enough - the shades of their brown-red hair. They are accompanied by their parents, a red-haired woman and a fully grown man that's bouncing for some reason.

Closer to the Anes' age range (and interests), there are quite many teens and twenty somethings. In the distance, sitting on the green couch there is a girl taking notes, next to what - at first glance - appears to be a pair of identical sisters, but who then reveal to be the same girl after one emerges with the other. Close to her, leaning against a blue wall there is a boy with cool white hair, he looks longingly at the notebook girl and is for some reason holding a mirror and talking to another young man who is likely his fraternal twin and a pair fraternal twin girls, one of which dashes across the room and back, to show off her gift.

Nearby in a purple couch, there is the another triplet set, hard to tell what they can do, but one of them appears to be trying his best to make himself the center of the room without even trying too hard. In the same couch (it's a large couch, a lot of people could fit in it) a pair of identical twins, one who is playing with some sort of techno-gauntlet and another who is observing the entire room like he is trying to solve a mystery.

Clad in matching white outfits, two non-identical girls appear to be... not talking to each other, but they are looking and making facial expressions like they were. With no lip movement. One plays with metallic marbles. There is also a pair of blonde fraternal boys, one of which is really buff and who appears to be feeling uncomfortable hot, given how he is lifting his shirt (showing his abs) to fan himself. This despite the air being quite chill. His brother is also good-looking but has a sort of "porn star who never made a facial expression" sort of face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, those are the ones in their age range. There are quite many more and - being minors with superpowers - there is a ruckus exploding every other minute, leaving staff quite occupied.

Oh, wait, now that they take a second glance, there is another set of identical triplets over here. In the couch that is silver with vivid purple strikes (the decoration in this lounge is really patch worked).

One of them notices the three coming in and waves them to come over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh, he'd expected this to get a fair amount of attention - it is a mostly unexplored topic - but not this much. He nudges his brothers out of the way of the door so he can take a better look around, cataloging the gifts he can determine from watching. His attention is caught by the girl with the marbles. Another magnetism gift? If so, he wonders how their gifts differ.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey, identical triplets! More than one set, even. They've never actually met another set before, triplets being rare enough without adding how rare identicals are. He grabs Leco and Gabriel before the latter can leave them for the girl he's watching, pointing out the one who waved.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Let's go be social, I guess," Leco agrees. The three of them make their way over to the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of them gives them a very meaningful all over look.

Permalink Mark Unread

But the one that waved them over talks. "Hey, there. Did you just got here or you arrived earlier and got processed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets a very meaningful look right back, along with his brothers.

Permalink Mark Unread

 From this one, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabriel ignores the silent byplay, "We just got here," he says. "Gabriel Anes, and my brothers are Angélo and Aleixo," he adds, waving at each as he names them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Angél," the one named thus corrects, distracted from the exchange of meaningful glances.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. How do we get processed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Felix Solano, and my brother Fernando and Thomas," he waves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thomas smirks. "Charmed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is usually someone to greet you by the door, but they are busy with the little gifted." Fernando waves in the direction of a small girl in a sweater so over the top that one barely notices her glowing in a rainbow aura. A boy with a baseball is apparently trying to make her stop.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is a room over there, where they can get an identification badge," he removes his own from a shirt pocket. "I can show you where, only one of you needs to come along." He waves at the free seats near them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabriel eyes his brothers and sighs internally, "I'll go." He starts off in the direction Felix had pointed out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Angél flops down on the couch next to Thomas, "We are very charming," he agrees with a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leco joins Angél, watching the chaos with a slight frown. "Should we be helping with this madness, or would we just get in the way," he wonders. It's kind of funny to watch the staff running around like their heads got cut off, but someone might get hurt if this continues.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix leads the way to the relevant room, more like a nook, where a person takes their information. "You're not from Brazil?" Felix asks after that information is stated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. I don't suppose that's your gift?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not originally. Both of our parents were, but we were born in Canada. We moved back when we were twelve."

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs, "Nah, here-" He draws together a bunch of the moisture in the room to make a ball of water, floating above them.

"Thirsty?" He asks with a wink.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I might be and neat gift." He elbows Fernando, "Isn't it neat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is. Can you actually drink from that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Do any of you want to do magic professionally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure can! It's just water," he demonstrates himself, bringing the water ball up to his lips and sucking some of it in. "No impurities," he adds after, licking his lips to catch any droplets, "Bit of a specialty of mine, that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leco looks away from the disaster of the rest of the room, "What about you three?" He asks, eyes catching on and then flicking away from Angél's lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles at Felix, "Yeah, all of us want to. I have magnetism - I'm going to look into the applications that could have in power generation. Aleixo has electrokinesis, and roughly the same plans. Angélo has hydrokinesis, and given the symbolism of his name, he wants to work on trying to clean up water pollution. I take it you also plan to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Again the three of us. I just create sunlight." He demonstrates with a small ball of golden-white light. "Lucky for me, it's a power that goes well for both power generation and symbolism. Fernando is telekinetic, small range and strength, but a lot of finesse and his power does a thing where he can set to keeping moving something automatically. Thor, that's Thomas, has durability. We are hoping that we will link up with someone bio-gifted and do medical or immortality research."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see that must have a lot of experience in doing that thing with your lips." Thomas tells Angél.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fernando snorts at Thomas' comment. To Aleixo he answers. "I have something like a short range telekinetic aura. Thomas can disperse physical forces that would harm him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could just say 'durability' and Felix is both a literal and metaphorical ball of sunshine."

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks. "Admirable goals," He says, smile growing a bit. "Our cousin has a bio gift," he mentions. "Plant focused, but that hardly matters in a coven. We could introduce you," he offers. "Though, she's only 16," he adds, "Anything official would have to wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Electricity," Leco offers, "Generation and control." Though his control is... less than perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do, in fact," Angél agrees with the first comment, grinning.

"Short range, but how good is it inside that range?" he asks Fernando, with less than perfectly innocent interest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, extremely good. I can even tell it to do complex set actions without continues input. Managed to make a telekinetic clock out of it once for class."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Fernando. He absolutely was asking about that kind of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "It's stronger and faster than my hands, and can easily grip grains of sand and line them in little lines?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod. "Networking can't do any harm. And plant control sounds cool. My power is not very useful day-to-day except I don't need to go out for my vitamin D."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She certainly likes it."

He shrugs, "Most people don't get obviously useful powers," he points out. "I can't move anything heavier than about 2 kilograms. That doesn't mean I won't be useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No no, I think he managed to get across the answer to my question," Angél tells Thomas, eyeing Fernando intently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am glad to be understood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. I am just jealous of anyone that can pick up the remote without picking it up."

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs, "That's one of the most fun bits," he agrees. "I definitely get to choose what we watch more often than not," he admits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leco watches with a raised eyebrow, before looking over at Thomas.

"So, we know what Fernando does with his power. What do you do with yours?" He wonders.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not much, since it stops things from happening. It does mean that I am less afraid of going out at night. With my power, the worst someone could do is pin me down. And honestly?" Smirk. "I welcome them to try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh really? Maybe someone should take you up on that," he suggests, also smirking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They should, yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They finish the processing and print out the badges. Testing should start in a few minutes, they apologize for the delay. "Man, that was the worst when we are kids, but luckily Fernando watches way less TV now. And I up to watch anything that Thor - that's Thomas - watches."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fine, Gabriel can see that they need all hands available to get the chaos under control.

"Admittedly neither of mine watch much TV either," he says, "So it's less of a victory than I made it out to be."

He steps out of the nook and back into the lounge. Oh good, his brothers haven't vanished into a secluded room while he was gone, with or without company. They are here for a reason.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not for lack of wanting to - mostly just for lack of time. Leco looks away from Thomas to search for exits besides the front one, but notices Gabriel and Felix making their way back into the room first. Well, there goes that idea.

"I guess it'll have to wait until after they're done poking us with sticks, though," he says. "They're coming back."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix pats Gabriel on the back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All goods things are worth waiting for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a very patient person most of the time, but I suppose I can wait for this," he agrees.

He looks over at Angél, playing with his water ball and alternating between watching their exchange and smiling at Fernando.

"We can find a nice secluded room later and do some testing of our own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Waiting, ugh," Angél sighs. In all the chaos, surely no one would notice if they wandered off for a bit?

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabriel smiles at Felix, then catches sight of the look in Angél's eyes as they approach the couch. Rolling his own, he lifts his hand and makes a little beckoning motion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Angél starts, hand going up to clap over his ear. He drops the water ball on the couch between his legs.

"What was that for!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn," Gabriel says, deadpan. "I was hoping it would land on your crotch. Thought you could use a little cooling down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I disagree."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh, Thor, already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you make the water evaporate from the fabric?" Fernando asks mildly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Angél nods, still rubbing his ear. The water rises up from the couch to form into a ball again. He eyes Gabriel's perfectly dry shirt speculatively, then shrugs - no harm done, no  need for vengeance. He goes back to playing with his water, making shapes out of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thor?" Leco asks. His fingers spark, "Nice nickname," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are here to do something," Gabriel points out, "And the registrar mentioned that they'd be ready in a few minutes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very nice, even if not quite fitting given my gift. Also, cool gift." He tells Leco.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your names are also awfully close to the beginning of the alphabet, too. Assuming that they are doing any order at all you guys are either be called very early or very late because you came later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," he says, snorting, "It's not good for much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like it," Angél comments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we'll see," Gabriel tells Fernando. "Either way some of us will be called much later, assuming they are using either of those orders."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's indeed the case.

Testing in this case involves a lot of magical prodding. Including the casting of spells both by themselves and together. Possibly to see if there is any special magical interaction between the multiples. This takes most of the day. There is some power testing involved as well, not to figure out the limits of their powers, just their behavior and mechanisms.

And there is a short interview afterwards (they had already answered a large questionnaire before even coming in) too, but nothing to invasive.

They may spot the Solano triplets on occasion, but there is no opportunity to stop and chat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw, that's too bad. They'll have to catch them after the testing is done.

Angél moves water places. He can't manipulate anything but water - if he tries to manipulate another water-containing liquid, he just rips the water out of it. Even that doesn't work if the material is too solid. Non-water things floating in water he takes control of get left behind, as well.

He also does a few water purification spells on his own, and then he and his brothers cast some other spells for the scientists.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabriel also moves a lot of things a lot of places, but metal ones instead of water. Little ones. He's no use for, say, moving cargo. He'd probably make a great assassin, though. His range is much better than his carrying capacity. Luckily he has less than zero interest in that sort of thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Aleixo shows off his lightning. At low voltages he has pretty good control of it - he can use it to charge a phone, carefully, if he wants to spend an hour doing that. Once his output gets too high the lightning starts going where it wants more than where he directs it, so he declines to show this off.

And once they're done, can they find the Solano triplets anywhere?

Permalink Mark Unread

The place was quite busy so people were politely incentivized to leave so the staff didn't need to worry about keeping eye on extra people.

Permalink Mark Unread

What, really? Well that sucks. And they didn't stick around somewhere nearby? Not that he'd blame them for not hanging around waiting for some people they'd only met that day.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least not anywhere in the public accessible parts of this institution.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damn. They really should have traded numbers while they had the chance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we'll run into them again some time," Angél suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unlikely," Gabriel comments. "We might live half-way across the country from them, for all we know. It's too bad - I was going to introduce them to Bia. Felix mentioned they wanted to work with someone with a bio-gift on medicine - and immortality."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really?" Leco asks. "That's ambitious - the second one, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is," Gabriel says, smiling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You like him!" Angél says, delighted.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe," is all he says in return. "Let's get going - grandfather is expecting us to be back at the hotel in an hour. We wouldn't want to be late."
