The Starr twins are Graywards in Elsewhere
Permalink Mark Unread

Many years ago, a group of sorcerers decided to develop a complex magical well of power that would allow them to store sorcery gifts, summon monsters to fight for them and even store some extra lifeforce. It was a project that took many years to complete and it was an extraordinary feat of arcane engineering.

There had been some drawbacks, some of which were features. Only males of their specific bloodline were allowed access to its capabilities and without enough of them around to keep it stable the thing would have... side effects. The monsters would show up by themselves, uncontrolled and feral. And if someone else tried to kill them then the surrounding nature would be drained, potentially killing the town's population if it got bad enough.

This was deemed acceptable and for a time it wasn't a problem.

Then not-as-many years ago. A family reunion ends in tragedy and the drawbacks became a very urgent problem.

They never stopped searching for distant relatives. It wasn't a particularly hopeful search, but just the possibility was enough to be worth the cost. It was part of their budget. Every year since the disaster, there was at least some attempt to find a lost branch across the worlds. There had been various levels of success. And as the years passed, the chance decreased, but they kept trying.

There is a new lead and since he was closer, Temple is sent to investigate. He asks for one of his not-that-complicated-but-are-we-really-boyfriends-? for help and Felix volunteers.

Felix agrees with Thomas that not dressing like a MIB for the occasion is a missed opportunity, but disagrees that it is enough of a missed opportunity. Instead, they rent a car go to the address, identifying the potential distant-relatives. Then they cast a divination spell and search for a set of twins that might or might not have magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

The divination reveals a set of magic twins! One is gifted - with two gifts. He has much more lifeforce than most humans, but his Health is extremely depleted.

Permalink Mark Unread

The other has no gift, but his lifeforce is augmented as well - moreso than the first.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple and Felix are observing them from a distance. "Oooh, they already know about magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That didn't show up in the detective's report?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not necessarily? Oh, yeah, it's strange that there are no notes indicating that they had contact with people who are in the know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be like Henry - which, wow, lets hope is not that. Specially with two gifts. Any idea which ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This scrying does not have that much granularity. But at least we don't have to convince them that magic is real. The gifted one definitely has a health-gift, just looking how skinny he is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Maybe we should get a bit more warded and come back later for the reveal."

They depart and come back an hour or so later.

Permalink Mark Unread

They live on the top floor of an apartment building. It's not exactly nice, but it's not terrible, either. As they approach the apartment they might be able to hear someone half-shouting through the door.

"-gonna fucking kill yourself if you keep this up, James!"

'James' says something in reply, quiet, hard to make out under the music also audible.

"I get it, Jay. You need to ease up, though. Don't make me bury you, damn it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Flinch. "Yeah, lets... interrupt that."

Permalink Mark Unread

They are interruptable. A knock at the door brings one of them to answer it - the non-gifted one, going by the healthy state of his body.

"What?" He asks the two strangers at the door. He's not really in the best mood, but he does his best to push back his anger and frustration, putting a neutral expression on, if not a pleasant one.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, sorry to interrupt. But are you two Alexei and James Starr? We might be related and wanted to talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Alex," he says, neutrality wiped away by mildly confused, slightly suspicious surprise. "James is my brother. Related?" His face goes through a couple subtle expressions, "This... isn't really the best time."

He glances back into the apartment, lips twisting in frustration.

"...You know what, no, come in," he says, turning back to them. He steps away, waving them through the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." Temple says letting himself and Felix in. "We are only very distantly related, but we have been trying to contact all the possible relatives. I can explain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not actually a relative, I just came here to help Temple with the situation. I am Felix Vaesteri."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right. I am Temple Grayward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you, I guess."

Just inside the door is a small space for shoes with a closet for coats to the left. He doesn't ask them to take theirs off, just leads them down the hall to the right and into a small living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

The other one is on the couch inside, reclining such that he takes up the whole thing. When he sees them come in, he pulls his legs up to leave room on the couch. Alex settles there, waving the visitors to sit wherever - there's another couch and a couple beanbag chairs in the room.

"Hey," he greets sunnily.

He's just as skinny as their divination had shown - not skeletal, but you could definitely see his ribs if he was shirtless.

"What's this about long lost relatives?"

Permalink Mark Unread

(Concerning!)

He puts his best smile. "Yeah, distant, but I have a genealogical survey that points for us to be related." Not to mention that naturalborn sorcerers are just too rare for it to be a coincidence. "But we have been trying to find all the surviving branches of the family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What for? Just curiosity, or what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Deep breath. Band-aid rip off. At least one knows about magic and the other suspects of something amiss. "No. We need it because magic is real, and we need to find relatives for magic reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was expecting you to take a bit longer than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we knew that magic was real," he says after a moment's surprised pause.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of magic reasons?" Alex asks, wary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We knew that you knew."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Complicated reasons. Our family has a source of power which only works for male members of the bloodline. It gets unstable of there are not enough of us and a few years back most died during a family reunion. My father cheated on his wife to have more kids so the thing didn't go completely out of control. But we are still searching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How...? Oh," he looks down at himself, "I guess if this is a normal side-effect-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It clearly isn't, Jay," he says, distracted from Temple's words by this clear idiocy, "They look fine, you're just an idiot with no sense of moderation."

Permalink Mark Unread

The two are a bit uncomfortable. "Can you explain what is this?" he waves at James' self. "My first guess is that you're overusing a health gift."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that what it's called? I can control - fluids, basically. Liquids, gasses." He pauses, "It lets me fly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He uses it too much, yeah. I try to tell him," he glares at his brother, "But-" he runs a frustrated hand through his hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, "It's fine," he insists.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your brother is just concerned about you and you do look concerning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are you using it too much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Uncomfortable silence for a moment.

"He couldn't climb or run much, after he first got the powers," Alex explains for him, "And then he just kept using it. Even when it was obviously making him sick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't just - not. If I can't even freerun - and there's something about flying-" he's frustrated by his inability to explain.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, your gift might not be efficient for flight. You could learn a ritual version. Those typically spend stamina and then you are just tired like you've just run a lot. Instead of being weak."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We both happen to have brothers with stamina-based flight, and they can use it all the time with no ill-effects."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's magic you can learn without-" he curls his shoulders in a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex shifts closer to him, pressing against his side, "Yeah, tell me there's a way to learn this besides-" he grimaces.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Without what? We partially came here to give you a magic overview alongside some offers to come with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. You wouldn't be this casual about it if learning to do the magic you're offering usually takes torture," he admits, tone dark.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds nice?" Jamie says, arms clasped tight around himself, trying to move past that topic, "The magic overview. We'd have to think about moving anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Torture?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple raises a hand. "Let's... uh, drop the topic, Felix." At least for now. "But typically, learning and using magic is... relatively safe. Safer than what you two have managed, but that's a given if you don't have any formal education." He almost makes it a question. "So, first thing, magic originates from another world called Elsewhere. It's not a regular world, more like a pocket dimension, but the size of Russia. It sometimes attaches itself to other worlds and people in that world starts being born with extra lifeforce. The four of us are example of those people."

Permalink Mark Unread

He curls in a bit more at Felix's question, and then uncurls as Temple explains.

"Another world?" He asks, brightening a bit at the idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The four of us - I have it as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We checked before talking to you. Uh, sorry for spying on you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sometimes skips a generation, but it's hereditary. And yeah, there are others, Elsewhere is the hub, but there are four others. I can explain them in a bit, if you don't mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh- how long have you been spying on us?" He asks, apprehensive.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, we only took a look at you this afternoon, and we have someone looking for distant relatives all the time, but they only caught any sign of you a couple of months ago. They didn't follow you around or anything, it was more like, spelunking through documents. Or so I am told."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's suddenly very glad he's been pissed at Jamie all afternoon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I don't mind waiting for world explanations until after the magic lecture," Jamie cuts in, turning back to the previous topic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, so some people start being born with extra lifeforce. This means that they are healthier - under normal conditions - and can live longer and other benefits. Including having an easier time using sorcery, the name of the kind of magic. So, sorcery uses lifeforce aspect's as fuel. There are five aspects in humans: Breath, Stamina, Wakefulness, Health and Youth. One can develop gifts that are fueled by each of those aspects, suffering the expected consequences of spending breath or wakefulness. Except Youth, aspects regenerate over time. Gifts are convenient because they tend to only require mental actions to activate, unlike the other side of sorcery: Rituals. Which are a set of actions that when used properly and with the right intent, will generate a magical effect. Rituals are not limited to a single lifeforce aspect, but require more set up to be done at all and may fail if something about the set up is wrong. With me so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," Alex says, leaning forward and listening intently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I've got a Health gift and a- Breath gift?" He asks. "Shortness of breath is the consequence, right?" He doesn't use it much - he doesn't like the feeling of 'not enough oxygen'.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly. Stamina causes a sense of being tired from physical effort, but without being connected to your body. Wakefulness steadily makes you feel like you haven't slept in a while. And Youth causes you to age faster. It may also cause cancer, but that's pretty rare."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does your Breath gift do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This, basically," he says, to Felix specifically - it sounds like a whisper and is inaudible to everyone else in the room. "It lets me whisper to anyone in sight without anyone else hearing," he adds normally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, what would we call that... Voice projection or something? Useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess so - I don't use it all that much, since Alex is the only one I'd whisper to."

He looks back to Temple, waiting for him to continue.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes the clue.

"Okay, so continuing the discussion on magic. Our ancestors created a magic effect - we call it a lifeforce vault - you could say it's a magical place where they could store gifts and even lifeforce itself. And it's even possible to create monsters that have the stored gifts to fight for us. But the thing is only stable if there are enough users around. And only allowed users are men that belong to our family through blood. As I mentioned earlier a lot tied during a family reunion twenty or so years ago. Now the thing is unstable. It spits out monsters every other month and if someone besides us fights them, killing the monster drains the lifeforce of the surrounding area."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. That sounds... horrible. And that's why you came looking for us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why only the men?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Sexism, there is no reason why it would need to be our bloodline instead of people with the password or something." He answers Alexei before turning to James. "And yeah, there is more that you need to know, but that is the pressing personal reason. We have found other distant branches in the past few years. I met Felix, because a cousin of ours was co-apprenticing alongside him."

Permalink Mark Unread

He huffs at the first reply, annoyed, "Of course."

"What do you need from us, then, exactly?" He's willing to give up a lot to get Jamie a different way to fly - and he wouldn't say no to magic of his own, either. He'd say yes, actually. With quiet enthusiasm.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The absolute barest minimum is hearing a full lecture on magic safety, generally keep a line of communication open so we know you are alive and if you have any children to keep us informed about that. Ideally, you would want to come with us and get attuned to the lifeforce vault and make a visit to Elsewhere - it takes sorcerers that have never been there before, which is related to why magic is a secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. We'll definitely take the safety lecture," he gives James a look.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I'm not doing this because I like the side-effects," he says. "I'd be happy if I could do it another way."

Permalink Mark Unread

He huffs.

"We probably shouldn't commit to going with you right off the bat," he continues.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, and... I mean, we don't have anyway to know that's actually all you want?"

They haven't even actually demonstrated any magic, for one thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, that's fair. But we are willing to not rush into things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We would rather that you would also not to go about shouting that magic exists from the rooftops."

Permalink Mark Unread

He frowns, "Don't worry, we won't." He has no idea how he'd go about believeably revealing that magic exists without getting Jamie locked in a lab or something, so they don't have to worry about that, at least.

Still, though, "Why is it a secret?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Remember what I said about Elsewhere taking naturalborn sorcerers? In case you thought it was kidnapping, it is not... rather the world itself just teletransports them to itself, sometimes other people are dragged along. When new lines of Earth sorcerers were still popping up a couple of centuries ago, moving between worlds was harder and likely to land you on some random continental mass. And it was expensive just getting to Earth. All the while they would be plenty of people going 'oh, that's so sad that you are missing your family but have you considering meeting my pretty daughter and remarring?'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And even if they did return any children they had afterwards would suffer the same deal. Not to mention the issues that arise from you living longer than everyone around you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sorcery is hereditary but dilutes. So a full sorcerer could easily outlive their children unless they married another sorcerer. Anyway, this lead to a situation where the number of people that know about the magic and that live on Earth being officially on the three digits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you said it's been centuries - surely there's some way to roll out a reveal more safely, now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, I'm guessing not every naturalborn sorcerer is transported over? Or did it just not get to us, yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It did not get you yet, but it will eventually. Which isn't that terrible, nowadays, you would just need find other people, and they would bring you back. It takes a week or two, which is not nothing, but better than several years."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "There are people that use the fact that Earth is unaware of magic to make profit. And they are generally afraid of the government and our industrial base - Elsewhere and attached worlds were not as advanced and are still trying to catch up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess the second one is reasonable, but-" he huffs, "People are people everywhere, I guess." It's very frustrating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie leans into him.

"So if we go with you to Elsewhere, will it still sorcerer-nap us if we come back?" He asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, sorry. Visiting it even once prevents it from happening again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd call it more of a bonus than a drawback - I guess it could be fun and interesting to be kidnapped by another world, but I think I'd rather go without having been forced to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are we going, then?" He asks, eyebrow raised.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well yeah, I mean, if we'd be going either way. I can stop using my gift to fly, you can get magic - don't even try to tell me you don't want it," he adds, grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he's not wrong.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fly is amazing. I like my gift set and everything, but it's one of the gifts I would have liked the most to have acquired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My power is better than flight, but Fernando - my brother - sure makes it tempting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better than flight?" He repeats, "I call shenanigans. Unless it's like..." he pauses, thinking. Shapeshifting, maybe?

"...No, you know what, I stand by that. I can't think of a better power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are giftsets... do they fit the person? Or are they just random?" Jamie's fits him but that could just be coincidence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The current best theory is that you mold them into what you want, but molding them is a skill and every person only has five tries." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have super-speed. It means that while everyone else takes several minutes to set up rituals I can set them up in the blink of an eye."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Ok, that does sound pretty great," he admits. Still, given the choice?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that's inconvenient."

He pauses, "You weren't done with the magic lecture, right?" They just got sidetracked.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, not the safety lecture part. Would you rather have that now or continue talking about Elsewhere and the rest of the multiverse and everything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He glances at Jamie, "How about we do safety first," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw." But he doesn't argue.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't blame you."

There is a quick side lecture about how ritual sorcery works. The rituals are separated into schools which are comparable to programing languages, determined set of actions, symbols or objects will have different meanings and effects. One just need to know part of a schools' effects to be able to cast from it. And it's possible to be wrong and thus commit mistakes. So always double check your work. More applicable to sorcery gifts, it's important to be careful and treat magic with care. Don't do magic drug or otherwise mentally afffected, be careful, and don't overuse so much that it can impact your well-being.

He is not even trying to be pointed at James. He appears to be quite glad to just talk about magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is cute and Felix pets his hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex does give Jamie a pointed look when Temple reaches that part of the lecture, but is otherwise focused on his words.

"How do you... activate? Gifts?" He asks after - If not through the method they already know something about.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Aww! They're both cute!)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do some meditation exercises meant to 'move' your lifeforce around. Kinda like developing a muscle. You can technically extrapolate from what it feels like from using your current gifts but it's easier and safer if you have help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't actually want to hurt myself," he says, a little annoyed by all the mentions, even if they aren't meant to be pointed. He shakes it off.

"Can we see a ritual? Or even try one - not Health based, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, can even be the flight one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you usually fly indoors or do you have a place to take off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins, excited, "We have a little balcony," he says, waving towards the door across the room on his right, "I usually take off from there - I fly at night, usually, and people don't really look up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They really don't. In that case we can do a flying ritual that requires a minimum of instruments or set-up... Do you want to go first, Alexei?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes" he says. For several reasons.

(Jamie makes a face at him, also for several reasons. Alex pretends he didn't see.)

He scoots up to the edge of the couch, ready to stand, "What does it involve, exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple stands and pulls some notes. Flipping through them. "From memory. Some chanting and drawing symbols on your skin in either blue or purple sharpie. Well, something blue or purple, the person who invented this specific spell assumed that blue and purple paint was going to remain expensive forever, luck for you they are wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did they want it to be exclusive or something?" He asks, standing up, "And where on my skin, exactly, do I need to get undressed for this." This day has been weird since these two showed up but getting naked in front of them so they could cover him in sharpie would be a new level of it. Not that he won't do it, but.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This particular one wanted that, yeah. Sometimes it's surpestition. You only need to remove your shirt, there is a rune that needs to go on your chest, the other symbols can be placed freely, but I am likely to just write them there anyway since I am already at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright - should we wait for nightfall?" he asks, looking over at where the dim light of the evening falls through the wall-length window. "So I can fly outside."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, better if we do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We never got around actually explaing Elsewhere, or Elan, and all the other E-worlds."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Alex sits back down.)

"Ooo - wait, they all have E names? How'd that happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "There is a language from Elan where E it's used as a prefix for a world or planet names."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, so it's more like World-Lan? World-Lsewhere," he snorts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm guessing we'll need to learn some other languages to fit in there," Alex comments/asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty much. Well, the word for Elsewhere is different, but the English translation convention ended up following along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Translation magic is a thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, "I'll still want to learn it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are they like? The other worlds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, let's start with Elsewhere. I think I mentioned that's like a pocket dimension? The place it's like a flat continent floating amidst nowhere. Two miles thick most places and with crystals on the underside, they generate gravity and atmosphere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is no sun in moon. The stars are also crystals, and can be adjusted to simulate the day-night cycle. That is part of my job, actually. Me and my brothers manage magical infrastructure in a small town. Elsewhere is very clearly artificial, but the origins are unknown, there are ruins that are dated from tens of thousands years ago, and we are pretty sure some disaster caused a mass extinction which is why all there was to be found were ruins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. If someone had ever asked me what I thought the first real other world I ever heard of would be like, I would not have guessed anything like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those precursors - did they came from Elsewhere, or did they make the place, and actually come from... somewhere else?" He asks, curious. "Or is there no way to tell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They make a show of shrugging. "We only have theories. Two of the known worlds have been attached to Elsewhere since the ancient times and likely got caught by the same thing that caught the Elsewhere people - there is only ruins there, and very little life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most likely, Elsewhere is the result of a ritual or someone's gift and sorcery ritual. And sorcery originated from a regular planet in a regular universe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do some of the other worlds have other kinds of magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nods. "Though sorcery is the best by far. Anyway, so something mysterious happened thousands years ago and as Elsewhere just stayed empty until about four centuries ago when it started annexing Elan, a world not dissimilar to Earth, it has humans, and some of their humans have a magical ability called Synth. It lets alter the traits of living things. Not a super-dramatic way where you can just create chimeras of any two creatures, but it does things like improving crops and augmenting people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Augmented people are taller, stronger and longer lived. My other boyfriend is one. And the two of us are partially augmented... do they have Elan ancestry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, they do. Shocking news, you guys are part-alien. Except, not really."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still processing 'other boyfriend' when Temple mentions the last bit.

(Interesting how casually Felix mentioned it - is that just these two, or is their society more open about poly? It would be nice if it was the latter - if he was ever going to date someone they'd have to be fine with polyamory anyways, along with some... other things.)

He is quickly distracted from this train of thought, however.

"What does that mean for us, that we're... part-augmented?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"At your level, probably not that much? Just a tiny bit of strength and extra lifeforce. I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, no super-powers from the yellow-sun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn," Jamie laughs, "Though I figure we would have noticed by now if we were off-brand Kryptonians!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are part-augments unusal? Or do people have kids with people from other worlds pretty freely?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to talk about it, Felix?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you shouldn't feel that you should pass the ball, but I can explain. Part-augmented are not unusual, but there is... History to it? Not everyone from Elan is fully augmented, in fact most people are classified as not-augmented despite everyone having at least a tiny bit of it from distant ancestors. And the topic is quite relevant if we continue explaining the history of the worlds. Temple mentioned that annexing Elan, at the time in one of its continents part-augmented people are ostricized by both fully augmented nobles and the non-augmented lower class. And the only people that would accept part-augmented were the followers of this religion called the Daliath. To the point that the two groups simply merged. Which didn't made them any better treated. When naturalborns sorcerers started showing up because of Elsewhere the Daliath soon started developing gifts at an unusual rate because of how badly they are treated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, full-augmentation does something to one's lifeforce such that it becomes dangerous to use for sorcery. That doesn't affect partial-augments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. And long story short. Daliaths that went to Elsewhere, managed to discover sorcery rituals and how to return to Elan. They used these advantages to topple the nobility and ruin their empire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It sort of sounds like they deserved it, especially if they were treating them so badly they were developing gifts." His eyes dart to Jamie.

Permalink Mark Unread

He ignores the glance, "Are you two Daliath, then, or, I guess it's probably been long enough that not all part-augments are anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

The two very obviously ignore Alexei's comment.

"I am ethnically Daliath, but I was raised on Earth. Temple is not Daliath, but I could see someone calling him that for... racist reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I'm sorry," he says to Temple, "I didn't mean to be rude."

(Alex will just be ignored, then. That's fine, saying the exact wrong thing is a bit of a recurring problem, he's used to it. He'll just be over here remembering that most invasions involve a lot of innocents suffering and dying.)

"So," Jamie says, pulling the conversation away from this topic, "Elan, Earth, Elsewhere... what about the others? How many are there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh? Nah, I am cool. And total of six, two of which are boring. Epoch and Exile, which are the ones that have been part of the Elsewhere cluster of worlds since ancient times. Exile has very little complex life to the point of being nicknamed 'Mossball'. So remains of its inhabitants showed that they are likely human with weird proportions and maybe some physical boost related to the proportions. Epoch has even less life and also gets the matching nickname of 'Dustball', oxygen levels there are low, you wouldn't die right away but any research settlements needs some help. They also have these crystals that might or might not be sorcery in origin that store memories."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So whichever world sorcery came from, it's either one of those or it's gone?"

He pauses, then adds, "How varied do gifts even get? If you can have something like 'creating a whole other world'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the most likely theory," he says to the first question.

"Gifts can be really varied. They can't create lifeforce out of nothing. Also, they don't really mess with space and time. Which is a strike against the 'creating a whole other world' theory - there is just not a better explanation. Gifts can be things like moving matter, transmuting it, affecting the classical elements, affecting the chemical elements, becoming intangible, sensing things. And so on."

"...Those memory crystals," Alex speaks up, a little uncertain of his welcome, "You mentioned that there's all those effects caused by crystals in Elsewhere. Could there have been more kinds in Epoch, at some point, or could they have had the ability to make them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a connection, yeah. But we don't know for sure. They have memories of ancient past, but they are patchy and not really informative. Nothing that shows that they had other kinds of magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Alex nods, thoughtful.)

"What about the last world? Earth, Elsewhere, Elan, Exile, Epoch, and...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Efross. Annexed after Earth was. Their humans have the ability to absorb, store and release heat, which they managed to evolve because of a magical field their universe naturally has, which the downside that the field is causing an ice age, and they most have Stone Age level of technology. It's the least populated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like a pretty powerful ability," he notes. "How easy is it to visit these worlds, anyway?" He asks. He'd like to see all of them, himself, even the dead ones - ancient ruins sound interesting!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, it's not that different from traveling between continents?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you know the right people. I mean. And I guess depends on where you want to go or if you just want to check an item off a bucket list. There are portal hubs that sell you the technical experience of going to another world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not like that - I want to actually see them." He's not much of one for guided tours. For one thing, they usually stay on the ground.

"You don't really learn what a place is like, if you're just seeing the parts they show the tourists. You've gotta... go off the map. Talk to all sorts of people, explore, get lost." Sure, it can be a bit dangerous, but that's part of the fun of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, man we should organize a trip together at some point. Though, I am also the sort to like guided tours. And those are doable. Except in Epoch, pretty sure that you can't... go hiking without being too dangerous, or worse, boring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Boring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're well-warded enough a dust storm is basically standing on sand, blind and deaf."

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes a face, "Yeah, that doesn't sound like a good time. How well mapped out are these places, anyway? There's gotta still be new things to discover, right? It might be worth the chance of getting caught in a dust storm, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are definitely new things to discover. They have teams for that stuff if you don't mind sharing the glory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be a good idea to try Exile or Epoch first. Somewhere with air that can sustain you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not really about glory - It's about walking somewhere no one's been in ages, finding things no one's seen. So I wouldn't mind company."

He shrugs at Felix, "You're probably right, even if I could probably last a bit longer in thin air with my gift."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, I didn't even consider that application. Can you make a air bubble around you while underwater?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are totally related."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins a little shyly at Temple's comment.

"Yeah! We lived near the ocean for a bit, I used to go not-snorkling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, neat! My ability to manipulate air is not that good, but I want to try something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being able to manipulate the water helps, too," he nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are there oceans in Elsewhere?" Alex wonders. "How large is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"About five thousand kilometers in diameter. And sadly no oceans. Geographically it's kinda boring, but it's expands slowly and all interworld movement needs to go through it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. That's really not a lot of space," he comments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess it's good there's all these other worlds attached," Jamie agrees.

He glances out the window, "You think it's dark enough now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's about the area of Russia, but I guess it's relative. And, yes, I think it's dark enough now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right," he stands, "The balcony's really not very big, if you need any sort of space for this it would probably be better to do it inside the door. We can move the table." There's a dining table taking up most of the space in front of the window, leaving the balcony door partly blocked.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can do it inside and then you can go outside, no worries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will be joining you. Entirely because you need supervision and not because flight is awesome."

He goes through his notes and starts preparing the spell. Part of it involves writing symbols on their stomachs with sharpie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Was that sarcasm?" He asks, uncertain.

His shirt will come off, then. He does his best not to flinch away from the tickly sharpie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie watches curiously from the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after a bit of careful chanting and a few gestures, Alexei is much lighter on his feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

...It's a little uncomfortable, really. Jamie has taken him flying before, but trusting him is different from trusting magic he doesn't know.

Can he just will himself up, or is it more complicated than that?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's pretty intuitive, there is a mental action to push himself in a direction, and it defaults into floating him in place in air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright then. He'll practise a bit in the living room, first.

"Actually being in control of this is... different," he comments. Also, he is flying by magic. His lips turn up a bit as he hovers over Jamie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie valiantly resists the urge to join them in the air, climbing to his feet to open the balcony door, "Come on, enough practise, don't you wanna try it out there?" He urges Alex. He will live vicariously through him for the moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts, "I see what you're doing, Jay," he says. He does float out onto the balcony, though.

He doesn't actually like heights much, but he's used to them. Out into the open air he goes, pausing just outside to look around.

Permalink Mark Unread

The coast is clear, or at least clear enough that they it's unlikely for anyone to spot them. "Lets go up really fast to avoid being caught?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me," he agrees.

Straight up into the air he goes, eyes on the sky, noting the few stars which can be seen despite the light pollution.

Eventually he stops to look out over the city, shivering a bit in the cool air. The view is pretty stunning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple follows up and his presence appears to be followed with a rush of hot air.

"Now remember. Happy thoughts. Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts, "If you're Peter Pan does that make Felix Tinkerbell, or one of the Lost Boys?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Closer to Lost Boys, Wendy."

Permalink Mark Unread

He huffs a laugh.

"How do we get to Neverland from here?" He asks. He shakes his head, "I mean - Elsewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is a portal hub... in that direction, but several hours away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Portals, hm. That must make travel easier. Not sure how Jamie will like that - he likes the journey as much as reaching the destination. More opportunity for... sudden travel tangents."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Portals are really hard to aim, like, realistically, you're hoping to land on the right side of the continent you want. But it does leads to shortcuts that take you through four different planets sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That seems like a recipe for getting dragged off to explore every world in between," he comments, smiling faintly but fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, don't even remind me. I am still very much tempted every time and I travel for my work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I guess if you do arrange any trips with him you'll have to leave a lot of time free for delays in the schedule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Valid, will you be coming along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likely," he agrees. He's not really comfortable with the idea of leaving Jamie to go wandering around the universe without him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But do you want to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yes. Not as much as he does, but I am curious." He pauses, "Does your translation magic help a person learn the language or just translate it for them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can do both. Though, magic that does direct skill transfer os pretty expensive and complex. Enough that most people prefer to pay the upkeep of temporary solutions and learn the long way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. I don't mind learning the hard way.

"How good is the temporary translation? I can't imagine it would be able to get across the full meaning of lyrics or poetry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's hard without effectively making a telepathic bond with someone that gets the language. And there is a range on efficiency, some translation just matches a meaning to a word without care for grammar or context. But some is really good at give you a level of understanding similar to someone fluent in the language."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do rituals like that work, anyway - and like this flying one, I suppose. Do you pay for it as you use it or give an upfront amount of lifeforce and then cast another once it runs out?"

Is he significantly more tired now than he was when they left?

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not feel more tired. "You can do both ways. I mean, you can pay upfront or as you go along. For flight, I paid an upfront cost, and I am fueling a bit more to maintain. Rituals are versatile like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long should we stay up here, then?" He asks, looking out over the lights of the city. "I wouldn't want to leave you too tired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can give you half an hour without it being too much trouble. No worries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you still be able to take Jamie up if you do? He's the one who will really enjoy this." Not to say he isn't, the view is incredible, and having control over where he goes is much better, and every so often he is reminded that this is magic which he can learn, which he can do himself, but.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Felix can take a turn? I can push it, it's just... a bad example, specially given your brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. He doesn't need any more incentive to push himself.

"I've been... trying to keep him on the ground more, lately. Our rule is, half an hour, once every three days. It's not enough, but I don't want to push him hard enough he tries going behind my back. I'd rather not have to limit him at all," he adds, frustrated. "I hope he gets a gift actually meant for flying, which he can use as much as he wants."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. He circles around. "Even if he doesn't. Other means to express himself magically might help. If nothing else, I can probably enchant that let's him fly less expensively."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. And... that would be good of you," he adds, awkward. He's not sure how they'd pay for something like that. Or. If he'd expect them to pay. What does it even mean, to be related to him and his family?

"We," he pauses uncertainly, then continues, slowly and haltingly.

"We've never... had anyone, other than ourselves. Not really. I don't... Know what to expect. From you, or anyone else in your family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, I am sorry to hear that. We really don't know what we can expect from you, but I think we might be able to get along. And we... we already have decided to not demand anything, just find our distant relatives and let them know. Anything that comes from that will... just evolve naturally, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we've decided to go with you, at least to meet the rest of the family, and see some of the other worlds, if you're really offering that," he says. "What kind of people would we have to be to say no to an opportunity like this? There's nothing holding us here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the spirit!" He flies closer to give him a pat on the back. "And we are really offering that… It's not even just us. You are sorcerers. People would like to employ you if nothing else."

Permalink Mark Unread

He will accept pats.

"That will be new and different," he says, wry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple flies in front of him to make a show of shrugging.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How much did your investigator actually find out about us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know everything, but the summary was that you got into the foster system when young. And didn't have much of a stable life. There was... I think it was the incident when James got his power? A hospital stay with an unusual good recovery despite the intense injuries, and few answers around the cause. It isn't the sort of thing that get to us fast, but it was one of the flags that marked you for further investigation."

Permalink Mark Unread

So they don't know about Davin, then, just the results of what he did.

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Anyway, we don't just go about offering for people to stay with us indefinitely, but you're welcome to at least a visit so everyone can get to know you, and we will definitely get you in contact with the right people if you want to hone your magical potential."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't expect you to, no. A visit sounds like a good idea, though." He pauses, "I'll have to call in sick to work," he muses. "Or... possibly just quit." That will be cathartic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A visit can potentially last a few weeks if you two need a place to get back to your feet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should at least meet your family, first, before we go making any long term plans," he says, reluctantly responsible. Someone has to be.

"To make sure it's not a disaster," he adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Reasonable... do you have any idea how it could turn out to be a disaster?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our personalities might clash somehow," he shrugs. "People have been known to find us difficult. Too flighty and distractable, in Jay's case. Too quiet, and too... willing to turn an insult or a bigoted comment into a fight, in mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, I can see that how that clashes with some people. We are not bigoted. There is like, four queer people in the house. I am not sure I mentioned that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't, no," he agrees. "That's promising, though. Some of the fosters were..." he trails off.

"Neither of us is straight," he adds. 'Bi' is probably the most succint way of describing his own sexuality, while as far as he can tell Jamie's never been particularly attracted to a woman.

"I got into a lot of fights as a teenager, and not just about that. Not as though homophobia is the only bigotry around."

"What are they like? Your family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, that's very hard to answer... Dad is very... accepting." He makes a face. "Okay, what I am going to say might sound scaring, but dad cares about his family and... that's pretty much it. Our lifeforce vault can potentially kill the entire surrounding forest and town, and that moves him some, but the destruction of our family's legacy was a stronger motivator. But he is not... imposing, he always made clear that he would let us be free to be ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He sounds like a good dad," he offers, uncertain. Not like he has any experience in the area. "Even if he's not the best person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Describes him very well. Anyway, he got two sons from his first marriage. They are twins as well - it might run in the family. Aaron and Topher. I sometimes think that they try their best to be polar opposites. Aaron is more athletic and physically minded, adventurous, if wasn't for the family business he would probably want to travel and explore. But he doesn't resent having to stay much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex nods, flying closer to hear better. "It sounds like Jamie will like him, based on that description," he comments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully. His twin, Topher, is likewise more intellectually inclined, likes to read dry history books, likes to dress formally even at home... He is gay, Aaron is straight. To add to the twin yin-yang thing. Topher's boyfriend Sawney is another distant relative and lives with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. I don't think we fit that stereotype. Different, but we're not opposites. They must have some things in common, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am exaggerating, but I have felt that I was closer to Aaron than Topher at times. And they get along. They just will argue about what to do in a Saturday afternoon more often than not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm pretty sure all siblings do that, sometimes," he agrees with a nod. "Twin stereotypes are... Well, I get it, some of them apply to us, even, and I'm sure they all apply to some pairs somewhere. They're just..." he shrugs. All stereotypes are kind of annoying.

"So who comes after them? How many siblings do you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Five. All half-brothers. After the twins there is Franklyn, by my father's second wife. Franklyn is very sweet. Very gentle giant - he is over six feet tall - and he takes care of the animals and nature around our house - he can communicate with animals. And he was the sibling that was closest to me, while growing up. Not as adventurous as me or Aaron, but still open to it? He is just also content in staying at home nursing a raccoon back to health."

Permalink Mark Unread

His lips turn up a bit, "Cute," he comments. "Sounds like he belongs in a Disney movie," he adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, he has definitely has run across the woods singing while his troop of woodland creatures followed. Except, that he flies... he also doesn't like clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess the meeting will be very memorable, then," he says, eyebrows raised at the mental image this description produces.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He can be dressed if it makes you two uncomfortable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think uncomfortable is the right word," he says, amused. "Though I guess that depends on how closely related we are." For him, anyway. Jamie could not give less of a fuck. "Anyway, it's his home. If he prefers not to wear clothes, he shouldn't have to, whether it bothers us or not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple laughs. "Uh... noted. And I am sure he will appreciate it. Either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

He huffs a laugh, "Good to know."

"After Franklyn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He is a beautiful bastard, but the best of them all. Me!" He bows to Alexei while still flying. "Dad never married my mother, she was just helping him out with his situation. I like long walks on the beach, the sunset, and exploring the new realms of magical research. Also, traveling. My job is almost professional travelling problem solver."

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs a little more openly this time, "Is that how you introduce yourself to all your long-lost distant cousins? Should I do the same? And what kind of problems - magic ones, I'm guessing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. I work for an organization called The High Library of magic, which does things like running magical academies and magical utilities. I am an independent researcher, so I move around a lot, covering gaps or providing insights."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds like it suits you," he says. "Not really something I'd want to do as... a life-path, though." He pauses, "This... being able to be magic - it's amazing, though I don't think it's really finished hitting me, even though," he gestures around them. They are literally floating in mid-air. He's done this before, though, of course, with Jamie. He shakes his head, "But I don't think it will be a passion for me like some things are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I can't say I get, but I can say that I am cool with it. Magic is neat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does seem that way," he agrees with a smile. Now that it's not going to slowly kill his brother, at any rate.

"I wanted to do music, for a living," he says, "Though the fame of being a celebrity always sounded..." uncomfortable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Restrictive?" He offers. "Elsewhere still has need of musicians, though I don't think the situation is that much different over there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a word, yeah. Also, the lack of privacy - constant media attention, the public thinking they have a right to dictate celebrities' lives, the paparazzi... I want to be able to share what I write, and have people enjoy it, but I don't want any of that."

After a moment, he shrugs, "I could be wrong about just how much I'll take to this, anyway."

"Who's next after you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Understandable. That would be Morgan, full-brother to Franklyn. He is... he cares, but he really doesn't want people to know he cares and he can be prickly. But he takes care of us and is our best healer. You will probably take a leave from admonishing James on overusing his gift."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So long as he's not too harsh about it..." he trails off with a shrug, "Jay knows he shouldn't use it, admonishment doesn't do much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morgan stands to learn a bit about being gentle, but I don't think he will be too harsh. He reserves that to the people he truly loves," Temple says dryly.

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts, "Alright. And the youngest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Adam, he and Morgan have the largest age gap, and he still in High School. Adam is nerdy, plays a few instruments, is in the robotics team and is... the most normal and no nonsense among us. Sometimes I think that he and Franklyn's soul got switched because or something because he acts like a grumpy old man. But mostly he keeps to himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, "It sounds like your house must get pretty hectic," he comments, "With all those personalities in one place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was terrible in the old house when we had to share bedrooms. Got better and worse when the new one was built and we were just getting into High School. Today we reached an equilibrium. Anyway.  That's my family. Though I didn't explain Sawney, who lives there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another relative? How many have you found, anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, besides you guys and Sawney? We found eight more. Half are male. But one of them is an old man that didn't want anything to do with magic, and didn't want his son and grandchildren anything to do with magic. There is Henry, who was working as a Lightkeeper in Elsewhere. Meeting him was how I met the triplets, actually. He occasionally drops by with his boyfriend Gabe. One of the adult women we found also didn't want to do anything with us. The other woman has two daughters, and we have contact, but they aren't close. Out of those only The woman we don't keep in contact with and Henry are known to be a naturalborn sorcerers. The grandchildren I previously mentioned are untested."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do the son and grandchildren agree with that decision?" He asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The son does, we don't know if the grandchildren have been informed. We are going to wait until the grandchildren are bit older to try to approach them to be sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're pretty young, then? I guess I end up thinking more about what kids want than most people do," he admits. "Just - I mean, if your family had come to one of our fosters when we were kids and they'd told you 'no'-" he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are sev- No, wait. That was years ago. They should be around nine and five now, I think? And that's a valid concern, but I don't there think were any signs of abuse or there is any problem with their environment? It's not that I don't think the children shouldn't know. It's just that I don't think that knowing now would improve things for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess most kids would have a hard time keeping a secret like this," he muses. "And if they couldn't learn to do anything with it yet - is there an age limit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting gifts requires a level of mental discipline that would be hard at their age. Is hard enough for adults. And ritual magic. Well, you saw a ritual. Some are even more complicated than that. But I think the main concern was just not creating a bad environment for them. If it already started bad, do you think it would be improved if they disagreed on what to do about magic? Unless you mean something else with age limit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, that's about what I meant. I guess I just don't like the idea of keeping secrets from people they," he pauses, searching for a word, "apply to, especially. Even kids. I get it, though." If it would make everything worse for them, with no tangible benefit, and no way out - yeah, he can agree with not telling them, then, especially so young.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I agree. Still, it's sad that they don't know. Anyway, Sawney came to live with us because we are more accepting than his other family." Pause. "You know, I am wondering if all the queer us in the house is less a coincidence or just a selection pressure because the environment is more welcoming. Dad couldn't care less and actually was supportive when we wanted to try magic that affects attraction. Oh, I never mentioned that Franklyn is biromantic that uses magic to be fully bi. I am bicurious, but a single use of the same magic knocked something loose there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's magic that affects attraction?" That's a pretty terrifying idea, he hopes no one is using it for the sort of things it would be used for in much of this world. "What do you mean by 'knocked something loose'? You weren't bicurious before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, sorry. That was probably confusing. I was bicurious before, and now I am outright bi. Or to be more precise, before I wish I could feel attracted to men, but didn't and now I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, alright." He pauses, "Jay might like to try that, if one of us learned to do it."

"Are there laws about mind-affecting magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, absolutely. Enforcing them is part of The High Library's job. Enforcing magical laws in general, but mind-affecting magic is of special concern. It's not common for it to be misuse, but, well, it is scary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No kidding."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, it's time to go down.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Has Temple been keeping track of where the apartment is, because Alex did not do that thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple has enough experience flying to have been looking to have done so, at least enough that they only take a few minutes to locate their balcony.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good, and when they get close enough he'll be able to recognize things on street level and point them in the right direction from there.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Some time earlier...)

Jamie lingers on the balcony as they fly off, watching longingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix pats his back. "Don't worry. I am sure you will be up there again soon enough." Pause. "Ideally with through the ritual version. And I bet the Grayward's property is even better for flying."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, offering Felix a smile, "I guess it would have to be, if magic is known there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I really don't want to hurt myself, you know. It was just. It didn't seem like there was any way to fix the problem which wouldn't be... awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I understand or at least I believe that you're being sincere. We are just worried, that's all. Could you explain the problem?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I feel trapped, if I'm stuck on the ground for too long. Getting high up helps, but not enough, and the temptation to fly is harder to ignore when I'm so close.

"It wasn't always this bad," he adds quietly, "The trapped feeling. I used to be able to stand it longer. It... reminds me." The longer he stays on the ground, the worse the nightmares. He hardly sleeps on the off days, maybe three fitful hours, if he's lucky. It's only making things worse.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I am sorry. Have you tried getting help for that? Also, do you want a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love a hug."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. He is a good hugger.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good hug, yeah, very warm.

(He's actually very cold, he suddenly realizes. It's possible he shouldn't be standing on the balcony in a tank top.)

"Too many things I couldn't tell them about, if I did go to therapy or something." He says after a moment, answering the other question. "There wouldn't be much point if I couldn't tell them why I'm like this. We don't stay long in one place, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "I figured something like that was at play. ...I am not sure Earth has therapists in the know, but Elsewhere or Elan should have. I bet they can rig something long-distance."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, a little reluctantly, "That's probably a good idea," he admits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with, but anything that gives you a health gift..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah, I... Yeah." If he can trust they won't tell anyone about what happened to the one who did that to him, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat pat. Good hugging.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...We should go inside," He says eventually, reluctantly unhugging. "I should make some food, we haven't eaten yet." And he really can't afford to skip meals.

Permalink Mark Unread

He sure doesn't, but Felix doesn't say that. "Sure, can I help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't gonna make anything too complicated, but sure."

Inside, and into the kitchen, where food can be made. Enough for Felix and Temple as well, if they're hungry?

Permalink Mark Unread

They will love to stay, if they don't mind having them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well it would definitely be rude to boot them out the door at this point!

Food: is made. Jamie's not a culinary genius or anything, but he knows his way around a kitchen. By the time Temple and Alex come through the balcony door, the stir-fry is getting close to being finished, and the apartment smells very nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

It sure does. Temple sniffs the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chicken! Veggies! The sweet and savory sauce - with a bit of a kick - he'd made with Felix's help fills the air with its delicious scent.

They can see Jamie poking at the wok with a fork through the half-wall separating living room and kitchen, considering the softness of the carrots. He spears one and pops it in his mouth.

"Hm! I think it's ready," he tells Felix, "Try it?" He offers him a bit of broccoli.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom. "Very good."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins, "Great! Let's dish it out, then!"

He turns, catching sight of Alex and Temple as he does, "Hey, you're back! How was it? Can I try next?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He huffs a laugh, "Eat, first," he says.

"It was good," he adds, "We mostly just hovered over the city. Talked."

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts, "All of the sky to explore and you picked a spot to sit around and chat?" Jamie loves him dearly but Alex can be so ridiculous sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, the important thing is not the journey, but the friends we made along the way. Or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs, "I guess you have a point. Come on back, we made chicken stir-fry, and there's enough for everyone," he waves his fork at the stove.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex will grab some bowls and cutlery to hand out before dishing up his own serving, and then wandering out into the living room to sit on the couch.

Stir-fry: nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom! Temple approves. "So, about you coming over to my family's home. How would be you schedule if you do decide to come?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I work six days a week," Alex says, attention on his food. "I'll have to say I've got a family emergency or something if we're going anywhere for more than a day. Technically true." Might still get him fired. He's working under the table, it's not like he has job security. He really should just quit, if it really looks like they could make something better of themselves thanks to this situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ouch... Even if you don't want to move in with us or whatever, we might be able to help you get a better job?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. We don't exactly have much in the way of official qualifications."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "It still sounds like a solvable problem but the sort where dad can give better advice than I do. Or at least more general advice than 'magic is great, why would you pick any other career?'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should look into careers that require magic, too," he says with a shrug, "Just because I don't think I'll love it as much as music doesn't mean I couldn't love it at all. It'd be pretty disappointing to go back to a mundane job after learning I could be doing magic instead, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, what kind of people would we have to be to have you give us this kind of opportunity and just go 'no thanks, we'd rather go back to working awful hours doing boring things'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They nod. "As magical career go, the worst possible case scenario you will be... err, the lifeforce battery for some more talented caster. The worst probable case scenario is being sent to a small town and become lightkeepers there - people who oversee magical infrastructure and control the local day-night cycle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably even the worst probable scenario would be better than this. I mean. Assuming we weren't stuck there all the time." He'd probably be fine with being someone's battery if it was the right someone, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They have vacation days, yeah. And the health benefits are an essential part of the job."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An essential part? What do you mean by that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was a joke. Because health is a resource for the magic to use?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," he reddens a bit.

(Jamie pats his knee.)

"So I guess the verdict is, quit my job?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I feel obliged to recommend you to wait a couple of days or something, but it sure sounds like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm." He swallows his food, "Next day off is in two days. Could call in tomorrow, and we could spend a day or two meeting your family, depending on how that goes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which of the worlds do you guys live on anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, boring world Earth, I am afraid. Our family are one of the few."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, so we won't be going to another one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or will we be taking a portal shortcut and ending up back on Earth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The second thing. Unless you feel strongly about flying coach. I think the route passes by Australia at some point, but nowhere interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Portals? No one told me about this! The route just goes through Earth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we mentioned but didn't elaborate. They are hard to target, but stay in place and you can still use them for shortcuts if the placement is lucky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So where else does this shortcut go through, and can we look around while we're there?" Even if it's just random wilderness, if it's another world's random wilderness it'll be interesting!

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll be on a schedule, Jay." Alex reminds him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He huffs, "Yeah, I guess it's not the time," he admits reluctantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And also it isn't an actual travel vehicle, rather a cargo one. It shouldn't be too uncomfortable, though. And we might be able to see Elsewhere's fauna."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooo!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys have a place to stay the night while you're in the city? If you're staying in the city, that is."

They could probably put them up, if they don't mind sleeping in the living room. He figures they probably have better options, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We got a motel room. No worries."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good.

"Plans for tomorrow then? Should we be bringing anything beyond an overnight bag? Do we need ID to travel like this for some reason?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"IDs are good, but not necessary. I don't think you need to bring anything specific. Do you preferences or needs regarding travel or your stay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Jay sleeps even less when he sleeps alone, but Alex doesn't want to just come out and ask for one room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll be fine with whatever," Jamie says with a shrug. No reason one of them can't just move into the other's room when they go to bed.

"I mean, windows, on the way there, and in the rooms. But I figure that's a given."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. That we got you covered. Can't give you choice of view when we get there, but no worries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess that's settled then. Ice cream before you go?" Dessert is an important part of dinner, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ice cream! They give out some contact information (just in case) and leave them be.

Permalink Mark Unread

They go to bed, but not to sleep, at first talking over the events of the day. Then it finally hits him fully, that Jamie is not going to die or be miserable for the rest of their life. They're gonna be okay. The understanding of this hits him hard, leaving him light and breathless.

They don't get to sleep until the early hours of the morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple and Felix are there to pick them up.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're ready to go when they arrive, breakfast packed to go. Om nom omelette bagels. Presumably Temple and Felix ate before they got there, but they can also have omelette bagels if not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple takes a bite just because he is curious about the taste. But they ate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is driving, they brough some pastries in case the two got hungry/hadn't ate breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex nudges pastries at Jamie but doesn't eat any himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pastries! Jamie will accept this type of mothering with enthusiasm!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, he needs to eat to grow big and strong.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does this car have a USB port or Bluetooth?

Permalink Mark Unread

It does. It's a rental, so they take a second to figure it out where.

Permalink Mark Unread

He will put some music on, then, if no one objects. Classic rock, a good fit for a road trip.

"How far are we driving?" He asks when that's all set up. He'd said 'several hours' yesterday, but that's not very specific.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are going to drive about an hour in this rental, and then take one or more cargo trucks the rest of the way. Do you need anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, "Not really."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie nudges him, "Tell us more about where we're going? What's your family's home like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's very nice. We have a huge property at the edge of the forest. We have a pool and sauna."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix turns to the twins. "They also have eight bedrooms, attached bathrooms with a bathtub each too. A library. A home theater with a screen that slides down by control remote. Plus a gym. There is also an guest house, where their governess lives with the security team. Oh, and did they get around to rebuilding the greenhouse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Should I have elaborated further?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs, "I guess so! Is the forest available for wandering around in?" He can maybe restrain himself if not, but he can't imagine why it wouldn't be.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Governess?" Alex asks, eyebrows raised.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yes. I don't remember the exact laws around it, but you can walk around the forest. Felix misused the term. She is our housekeeper. And former nanny. Since dad had five boys as close to each other as he could he and my stepmom needed the extra help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you said I underplayed my grandparents' house."

Permalink Mark Unread

Servants. That's... bizarre, given the background they come from. Solid reasoning, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I fly around the forest, though? Since you guys live on Earth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can, yeah. There aren't that many people around. Uh, the forest is also where the monsters come from, but the perimeter where they manifest is marked and there are alarms. The security team that Felix mentioned is more about monitoring them and the people comings and goings than us. We don't need a security team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ones the vault makes? How many relatives do you need bound to it before that stops happening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple sighs. "At least ten more people, but it can easily be twenty. Not counting you guys and the ones that we mentioned that didn't decide to join. Some of the problem is that the people who knew how to operate thing are dead. But each new relative helps a bit more."

Permalink Mark Unread

The twins share a glance.

"...I guess we'll be having kids, then," Alex says mildly.

Jamie makes a face, but nods.

"Everyone who knew how it worked died during that reunion?" He asks. "...What happened, exactly? Was it an accident of some kind, or..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I definitely understand the impulse, but I feel obliged to advice to... think a bit longer before having kids? Or not have them just because of the lifeforce vault?"

"Only a limited circle of elders knew how to tap into the vault's full capabilities. Everyone knew some basics, and some knew some more advanced techniques. But it was a big family reunion and sorcerer clans tend to be very close-knit. If we knew how to work it properly we probably wouldn't need as many people."

"I would love to know what happened. All signs point to an accident while casting a ritual that... exploded a few random magic effects. They usually did big things at those gatherings. But we don't know what could have been that would have failed like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not right away, of course," he snorts. "But Jay would never have kids without a really good reason. I wouldn't this young, either way, especially being unable to support them." He does want kids, though. At some point. With the right person or people.

"They didn't think to leave a written copy somewhere hard to get to? Just in case?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't know. They might, but they apparently neglected to figure out how it would get to any survivors in the situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So how does it work, as far as you know? You said it stores lifeforce and gifts... do you have to add your lifeforce to it, or does it take some of it automatically? Like rent, or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like rent. With a landlord that tries to chase you with dogs. The effect is fairly harmless. We always are have some lifeforce."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you can get the gifts and lifeforce out again, too?" He pauses, "Also, does it take the same amount of lifeforce from everyone?" He can't really spare any Health at the moment. "And does it take Youth?

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can tell when someone is low and not drain them. If that's what you're asking. And the lifeforce dissipates, but at a relatively slow rate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Youth?" Alex repeats that question. It seems an important one. If the vault takes actual years off their lives...

Permalink Mark Unread

Headshake. "It can store. But it doesn't take it like that unless given. Or if the person dies. It's stuck like that, because we don't know how to turn it off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better than the alternative," he shrugs. "We should know more about what this is going to mean before we actually agree to be 'attuned' to it, but it does sound important that we do so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair fair. And it takes some level of training to do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know, what be a good idea to do during this trip. Is giving you guys some introductory lifeforce manipulation exercises."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oo," Jamie says, leaning forward. "I figured it needed some kind of," he waves a hand, "Prep work, or something. We can just get started here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Prep work? We would start with breathing exercises and the car isn't ideal, but..." shrug, "it's a good way to occupy our time. We won't do anything meaningful. Just introductory work."

Permalink Mark Unread

They will enthusiastically engage in introductory work! Alex is quieter about his enthusiasm than Jamie is but it's definitely there.

Permalink Mark Unread

The introductory works, mostly means some meditation and breathing exercises focused around the feeling of receiving Breath - the lifeforce aspect - from Felix. James might recognize the sensation as similar to when he uses his whispering gift.

There isn't much visible progress to be gained from the activity, except being familiar with the sensations, which their tutors explain is key to eventually learn how to manipulate one's own lifeforce.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fine, they can be patient about this. Going too long without visible progress will leave Alex frustrated, but this is nowhere near that threshold, especially given the activity. Actually doing any magic-related thing himself is going to be new and interesting for a good long while.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's an understandable reaction! One that they encourage.

Soon enough, they leave the rental and are picked up by a cargo truck driven by a gruff middle-aged man. "Is this not too tight for the five of us? There is a hidden compartment in the cargo area and either me and Felix can just hang out there if it's too tight." He asks of James.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, we're good!" So long as there's a window he's fine in vehicles. Anyway, if Temple thinks he's going to complain about spending hours in close quarters with three very cute guys he's got another think coming. Even with the older guy around, as well. "That sounds like it'd be unpleasant," he adds of the hidden compartment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I have headphones and audiobooks. Anyway, back to magic learning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me," he agrees, glancing at Alex, who nods.

Magic learning!

Permalink Mark Unread

Magic learning! It's a couple of hours before they go to a facility in the middle of nowhere. Obviously a large warehouse of some sort, except for it's nearly random location. They go through some security gates and then leave the truck for a bit and are apparently scanned with one those metal detector wands.

Then they are allowed into another part of the facility...

...where a perfectly circular hole in reality hangs in the air leading to a similar facility on the other side. Their truck is there waiting them to go through, and other trucks are coming and going as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Magic detecting instead of metal detecting, maybe? Or both.

When they enter the room with the portal, he pauses for a long moment to stare at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex, recognising the look in his eyes, grabs the back of his shirt.

"Do we go through in the truck or can we go through on foot?" He asks Temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the truck? You can go through on foot, but it's hard to notice anything about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh, I mostly just want to walk back and forth a few times," and giggle a bit, maybe. "I'd probably be in the way, though. Where does this one go to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elsewhere. Portals always have one end there. But the other side is a facility with various portals to around the worlds. You can do that if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oo, I thought they were just going from point-to-point on Earth!"

He would like to go do that!

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex will go with him. To prevent him from wandering off and ending up three portals away in Epoch or something, of course, and for no other reason. Is there anything observably different about the warehouse on the other side?

Permalink Mark Unread

The other side is more warehouse. Though he can see through the windows (high above them) that the light is different. And he can see there are more portals around. From this angle he can see through two more, one of which has windows that appear covered in snow.

Permalink Mark Unread

He bounces on his heels a bit, grinning, "This is so cool," he whispers. He looks longingly at one of the nearby portals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple chuckles. "Wait until we see beyond an interworld warehouse." Their truck makes way to the portal where they can see the snowed windows. "Come on."

Permalink Mark Unread

They go! Through another portal. Is it chillier here? Or is their heating better than that?

Permalink Mark Unread

The indoors part is noticeable chillier, and the outdoors are noticeably chillier there is a small settlement around them. Covered in snow.

"Are we in Efross?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elan. Other planets can have snow you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Two new worlds in quick succession. It is really hard to remember to stay on the ground rather than flying up to take a look at their surroundings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How many worlds will this trip take us through?" Alex asks, looking around curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"After this we will go to Elsewhere again, then a quick detour through Australia then Elsewhere then back to United States."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head, smiling a little, "That sounds ridiculous," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds great, you mean," Jamie corrects him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Technically not mutually exclusive." Pause. "I am actually unsure. But anyway, here we are." He waves at the fields beyond the window.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are passing through what might be a school. Or at least a place with an excuse to have a couple dozen kids in a snowy field making sculptures of dogs.

"In Elan, or at least that parts I am familiar with. They don't build snowmen, instead they build dogs - moondogs - out of snow. I think they have some polar native people that believe they ward against evil?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Moondogs," he repeats, delighted, pressed up against the window. "Do you know why they're called that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because they live on the moon. See, the moon is made of snow. Which is why it melts away every month."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Moondogs frolicking through the snow on the moon - that's adorable. I think that might be my favourite moon legend, now - though I guess I shouldn't assume it's a legend," he adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh," Alex peers around Jamie to get a look at the moondogs. "Is 'dogs' just the closest translation or does wildlife match up somewhat? And Elan has one moon like Earth? What about the others?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Actual dogs, different breeds, but capable of reproduction with Earth's dogs and everything. Wildlife is very similar, but not identical with a mix of entirely new species and species that are extinct on Earth but not Elan and vice-versa. Same applies to the other worlds. And I think Epoch is the only planet with two moons? Planet with life that is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That. I think Efross' wildlife is the most different by far. It's solar year is about twice as long than Earth's but everyone's else is at most a month off. Days are a similar but not identical lenght. Ah, and Elan has augmented species so don't be very surprised if you spot a horse that's large than moose. Or an elephant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If the horses get as large as elephants, how big do the elephants get?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How large do the people get?" He shakes his head, "Is there a standard day cycle in Elsewhere, or does it vary?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fourteen foot tall. And full augmented humans average between seven or eight feet tall. And day cycle in Elsewhere varies, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are standards. Which is the same as not having a standard at all. And then someone tries to cleverly work out a new ultimate standard and the standards number increases by one. But places might adopt the timezones of nearby portals for convenience’s sake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I feel like I should have expected that," he snorts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

The journey continues. With more idly conversation and magical training.

They get to and through Australia with a disappointing lack of Kangaroos until they reach the Elsewhere side of the second Australian portal. Where someone kept some kangaroos outside the warehouse-like facility.

Permalink Mark Unread

Important question: can they stop to see the kangaroos?

Permalink Mark Unread

James is asking the important questions. And they will make a stop to see the kangaroos. It turns out that the guy that owns the place can somehow domesticate wild animals and these are safe to walk around and pet. Don't touch the joeys.

Permalink Mark Unread

Domesticated kangaroos! Magic is great. Jamie will absolutely wander around petting the adult kangaroos.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex will pet a kangaroo if one comes up to him, but he's more curious about how that even works.

"Is this the result of a gift?" He asks, "Or a ritual?" He hums, "And how is sorcery learned, usually," he adds, "Are there schools, or apprenticeships, or is it less formal than that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kangaroo like to be petted. It's very dog-like in behavior, including a desire to lick James' face.

"I asked, and they told me it was a gift. Which makes sense. This could be done with a ritual but going through the trouble to do it with these many animals and not guarding them better sounds like a lot of work. And they have both. Schools and apprenticeships that is. Or sometimes someone in your family teaches you, which is just an apprenticeship with more nepotism, I think. You need licenses to perform some kinds of magic, specially if you want to do it for money."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Kangaroo kisses!)

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, watching Jamie with a slight smile, "What are the schools like? And their prerequisites, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, prerequisites varies depending on what you're aiming for. Technology is replacing a lot of magic-based infra-structure, but there is still places that use it and then you have magical repair-people fixing things up and using existing spells without needing to innovate. For that - and for any magic profession - you just need to show the ability to follow instructions with care. But there are other jobs, warding places, body guarding, some weirder stuff that benefit or can only be done by magic," he waves at the kangaroos "oh, medicine, there are various degrees to how much you can dedicate to magical medicine. Being a full magical doctor is hard work. But it's kinda easy to learn enough to keep most people alive and then send them to doctor appointment later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I contest the use of the word 'easy'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair. It's fairly straightforward to learn a suite of rituals that lets you kick up the problem to someone more specialized than you."

(Domesticated Kangaroos like to play fetch.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(If the goal here is to turn him into a kangaroo person instead of a cat person, they should know it's only partly working. Now he is a kangaroo and cat person. He will throw many things for the roos to catch!)

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods along to the explanation, "I suppose deciding where we go and what we do should wait until after we know where we stand with your family," he muses.

Permalink Mark Unread

(This results in happy roos!)

"Yeah, it is not that different from figuring out your college major. Except you have more time to decide it. And people that take apprenticeships or less complicated jobs are even incentivized to study on the side if they want more advanced education."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

After a while, he'll call Jamie over so they can get back on the road.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie will come when called, reluctantly, patting the roos goodbye.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are also sad to see the kangaroos being left behind, but they shall forever treasure the memory.

Also, it's the final leg of their trip! Just a little while and they will get there. They can expend the rest of the time doing more magic training then.

And eventually they reach another warehouse facility.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where there is someone waiting for them. A man that, could believably be Temple's father, if one made the additional assumption that he was young for his age or too young to be a father.

He approaches when they hop off the vehicle and give Temple a hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's cute! Jamie first assumption is actually 'brother', given the apparent ages, before he remembers the extended lifespan. Still, he ogles him a bit, grinning at Alex when he raises an eyebrow at him, making his brother roll his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex waits for them to unhug - or for a reasonable amount of time to have passed - and then steps forward.

And then stalls. He has no idea how to greet this person. They have relatives. People related to them by blood. It might not mean much of anything yet, it might never mean anything, but it's a connection they've never had before.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice seeing you, dad." Temple says a little out of breath. And maybe a bit embarrassed. "So, these are James and Alexei Starr. Also, Felix, which you have met."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen nods at Felix, but turns his attention towards the Starr twins. "It's nice meeting you two," smiling quite sincerely, offering a hand to shake, but turning that into a half hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too," he says quietly, eyes widening a bit at the half-hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie touches Alex' shoulder, smiling at Temple's dad, "Pretty sure no one told us your name?" He says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Stephen Grayward. How are you two doing? I imagine the situation was quite a shock."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit, yeah!" He laughs. "I think we're handling it ok? Considering how surprising it was to get 'more magic' and 'actually you do have family' dropped on our laps all at once out of nowhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen nods. "We will try our best to make everything comfortable and smooth for you two. Shall we get going? My boys are waiting for you," he looks James up and down, "and Morgan will be annoyed if it took too long to feed you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, "Sure - and I'm not going to object to more feeding," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex appreciates these priorities.

Where are they going from here, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Home. It's just a short drive. Felix is also coming?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it isn't imposing too much. And I should leave tomorrow. Specially if it turns out that Henry and Gabe will swing by."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You entirely welcome!"

Car?

Permalink Mark Unread

Car it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gabe and Henry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Henry is a distant relative that we found like you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

They get in the car. Temple takes the passenger seat next to his father. "I am pretty sure we mentioned Henry. Maybe not by name? I am not sure we mentioned Gabe. But they are cousins, Gabe is related to the other side of Henry's family, not ours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And they are joined at the hip. They feel that the word 'boyfriend' is not a correct descriptor, but they are involved."

Permalink Mark Unread

(They'll get in the back, then.)

They share a glance.

...Twins is different than cousins. Alex shakes his head minutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. They don't live nearby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A few hours away, but in Elsewhere. We are co-apprentices, actually, and we share shifts and need to coordinate who is away at what time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was how I met Felix." Temple says turning on his seat to grin at Felix. "I swung by to introduce myself and the family business to Henry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are technically working under Henry and Gabe's grand-aunt. But the woman is pretty hopeless with regarding magic. So she has five apprentices that do all her work and goes around doing tarot readings to people." Stephen's tone is clearly disapproving, but also oddly amused at sharing the fact.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. So the other two apprentices would have to take over everything while you were gone?" He asks. "What kind of duties do you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We are, like, employed and and everything. Our duties: Magical infrastructure upkeep. Using straightforward medical spells to help people - though our town does have a doctor - generally helping with problems that need magic to be solved. Oh, I guess dealing with magical criminals. And also making the day rise and the night fall.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Basically interns."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you just learn on your own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did she get the license to do this," Alex wonders. "Not that that doesn't sound convenient for everyone involved," he adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Her town is near a hazardous magical zone. They would've taken anyone. Though, she might be technically capable, just not willing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would say that fits what I have seen of her, but it is actually bad enough that I haven't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How is it hazardous?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't recover lifeforce other than your breath there. It gets you progressively more tired from, say, just standing and if you sleep you don't wake up. You call it the dead city because it causes stone buildings to grow from the ground and Elsewhere's fake stars fall. Even just looking at the thing is very uncomfortable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Property prices got really low there. My drivers hate going nearby. I think Felix's boyfriend is largely responsible for the town to still have access to modern products. Also, we are just arriving at our property."

Stephen says this while turning and getting the car through a remote controlled gate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dead Zones? Are those common?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie nudges him, "We're here, we can ask more questions later."

They'll climb out of the car once they pull to a stop, looking around curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a fairly large nice looking house. Modern in straight angles and juxtaposed shapes. It's on a hill, and they just need to climb a short set of stairs to it. Stephen hurries them up.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door opens and out goes a young man who immediately rushes to help with their luggage. "Hey, there."

"James, Alexei. This is Aaron. My brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Nice to meet you," Jamie greets Aaron. They actually only have the three bags, but he's welcome to take the third one while they take one each, if he wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I prefer Alex," he adds, handing that bag over. Inside?

Permalink Mark Unread

Inside. The interior is nicely decorated with a combination of eclectic art and family pictures. With various people around the living room.

Stephen looks between the two new arrivals and the rest of the room. "Alright, people let's make this efficient and try not make our guests overwhelmed."

Permalink Mark Unread

That last sentence is said while Stephen gives a specific guy a look. Said guy is staring at James.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about if everyone takes a turn to introduce themselves?" Stephen offers. "Or we can get you two, settled first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can do introductions now," Alex says, shrugging. He glances over at Jamie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie is shifting a little uncomfortably under that gaze! Everyone's been loudly questioning his life choices lately. Even if they're right to, it wears on a person.

"Uh, sure," he agrees, "Introductions, then settling in? We can just leave our bags here while we do that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Bags are left by the door)

"Alright, let's go around the room. It's okay if you don't remember the names later."

Permalink Mark Unread

They take a couple steps to the nearest couch. Where the people stand up to greet them. "This is my twin brother and his boyfriend. Topher and Sawney. Welcome them to our twins club."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Welcome," He who is presumably Topher - or at least looks more related than the guy next to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey!" Handshake? Hug?

More twins, huh. Non-identical, though. Not that he and Alex actually look that much alike, but that's mostly cosmetic and an effect of Jamie's gift use. Also, wow, everyone they've met so far in this family has been attractive. Must be in the genes.

"Jamie, and my twin Alex." Alex nods. "Do members of the twins club get benefits around here or is it just for bragging rights?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't discuss them in front of the non-twins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course not. Let me know if you guys need anything or things are overwhelming."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotta keep them guessing," Jamie agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will," Alex tells Topher, "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Next, our sweet summer child and youngest of my bunch. Adam."

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam, who looks very much like a high schooler until he stands up and show himself quite tall. "Huh. Welcome." He says, a bit awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. (It's a pretty awkward situation.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh, he'll probably be taller than them if he's still growing.

"Thanks," he says, "Sweet summer child, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Having an entirely reasonable age difference between me and my brothers comes with downsides in this family. And dad thinks quoting Game of Thrones is still cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wound me. Anyway, where is Franklyn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Taking a shower. I am Morgan. Have they told you stories to make you dread meeting me or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie shrugs, "They didn't tell me any stories," any dread is mostly coming from the staring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Temple told me some things, but nothing I'd call dreadful, exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, you wound me, Temple." (Temple rolls his eyes). "Anyway, it is nice meeting you. I promise I will wait until you're settled before loading you up with car-"

Permalink Mark Unread

And from down the hall, there is the sound of someone coming closer and saying "Sorry, sorry! I am ready! I am ready! Did- Oh, they are here." Says a young man floating in the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, floating guy steals all of Jamie's attention immediately.

"Hey! You can fly!" The wind picks up a little around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex grabs Jamie's arm.

"Jay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, sorry." It's harder to stop himself when the urge sneaks up on him like that. He shakes himself a bit, pushing away the heaviness in his stomach.

"I guess you're Franklyn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am Franklyn, yeah. Maybe we can fly after you are settled? With a ritual from me to you, that is." He stops flying and ironically, now he is taller than the twins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tol! He gets a slightly starry-eyed look, "That would be great!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That's everyone, right?

"Where are we staying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It is. "I will show you. Morgan, you can wait before stuffing them with food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, alright, but I reserve the right to start cooking right now." He says, leaving for the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen leads the four of them upstairs. "I am afraid I will have to give them your room, Temple. I am not sure if Felix is alright with you two rooming with Franklyn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely not. Franklyn is a delight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, sorry?" Jamie offers Temple and Felix.

Permalink Mark Unread

No sneaking around necessary, apparently. And getting to go flying will help Jay sleep, too.

They settle their things in the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't mention it."

Permalink Mark Unread

The room has its own bathroom. It's tastefully decorated, if a bit bare compared to the rest of the house. Stephen tells them that they can rest for as long they want and indicates where they can find him if they need anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the current plan is that they'll be staying for two days, probably, so they won't put anything in drawers or anything. They will freshen up a bit, but the whole point of coming here was to meet the family, so after that they'll head back downstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie looks around for Franklyn once they're back on the first floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex hovers (metaphorically) just inside the room.

...He had more questions, if Temple and/or Felix is findable?

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn is on the living room's ceiling. Reading something. "Hey, there! Do you wanna fly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is available. "Hey, there. Need anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" He tilts his head at Franklyn, "Are you manipulating gravity?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone he's actually talked to for more than a few seconds, for one.

He shrugs, "I... had more questions? If you don't mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My flight is more like telekinesis? I mean, I just will my body to move and it goes." He flies down. "You do wind control, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fluid control," he corrects, "Liquids and gasses. Usually wind, though, yeah," he adds with a shrug. "I mostly use it to fly. It's... not very good for it, compared to the other things I can use it for," he admits, "It takes a lot of power to lift a person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see the problem. Maybe there is a way to make it easier to use your gift for flight. But for now, we can just use the ritual. Do you mind following me to the casting room?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course? What are the questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Mostly just a continuation of the things I was asking when we got here? Dead zones - are those common?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!" To the casting room! "I've tried other ways of doing it," he adds, "But I might have missed some?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno, maybe we could get you a parachute or something? Or come up with a new ritual that lets you use your gift that way more easily?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We just call it a dead city. They are not common. It ever happens when someone screws up. The main problem with that one is that it infects the ground."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't really know much about rituals yet. If we could do that, sure! Though the parachute idea might work, too... It would be too attention-grabbing in a city, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of screw up causes something like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You still could use it in a non-Earth city." He points out. "We should poke Temple about making you a custom ritual or something."

They are in the casting room. All the furniture is against the walls. Including some bookshelves that Franklyn starting looking at until he pulls out a book. "How long do you want to fly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone directly involved died in the accident that caused the dead city, so we can't be exactly sure what they did wrong. But likely the problem is that they wanted a building that could self-repair and expand using ambient lifeforce."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Is it expanding, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is 'forever' an acceptable answer?" He leans in to peer at the book.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "It's not... It isn't going to eat the entirely Elsewhere in ten years or anything, likely not even in a century. But it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

The writing in the book: Literally arcane.

"It is? I mean, it's not a practical answer. But I understand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likely not even in a century," he repeats. "But it's possible? And expanding either way? People are trying to fix this problem, right? Beyond just five apprentices on the edges of it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw. He supposes it makes sense that he'll need to start learning somewhere less complicated than 'flying rituals'.

Franklyn gets a smile. "Darn. What is a practical answer, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People are absolutely trying to solve it." He tries to reassure. "Our current method is digging and cutting out the infected parts. Creating isolated floating islands. And Felix and his crew are just peripheral to the solution."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With this version of the ritual? I can give you one or two hours. Or something more flexible but that might make you feel you just run a marathon by the end of it if you keep it up for too long."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's tempted. But...

"I... Should probably not strain myself," he admits with a sigh. "The two hour one'll do," he adds. "I haven't flown for more than half an hour in... a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. That's..." he shakes his head, "A huge ritual failure like that is the sort of thing that probably killed off the precursor peoples, I'm guessing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple nods. "One of the most likely theories. On the bright side. Whatever got them was probably something was... destructively designed. And probably took a few thousand lives as fuel."

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn pats his back. "Rest for a few days, at least. Do you like swimming? It's not the same, but I do find it relaxing when I can't fly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The bright side, huh. At least it isn't easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do, yeah," he says, "We don't live near any good spots for outdoor swimming right now, but I go to the pool nearby sometimes." Which isn't the same, but it's better than nothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. Franklyn starts preparing the ritual, picking objects from their shelves. "We have a pool. Oh, has anyone asked if you're okay with nudity? I am usually nude at home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I know it isn't completely reassuring, but there is that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one's asked, no? I don't mind it. I might stare? I'll try not to stare. That seems like it would be rude." This will probably result in alternating between staring and not looking, at first, which doesn't seem great either! Still, he's not gonna try to limit anyone else's freedom. He'll get used to the cute nude flying guy.

"Can I help with anything? For the ritual?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. Pause. He's out of questions for the moment.

Though.

"...Did your investigator do some... genealogy stuff? To find us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He did. I didn't get around to reading it. But I am pretty sure dad has a file on it and will show you if you ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn chuckles. "It's okay to stare as long you're comfortable with me and everything. And sure. If you don't mind following instructions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ok! And, I can follow instructions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah, I'd like to see it." Where did he say he would be if they needed him?

Permalink Mark Unread

"He should be at his office." Temple can shows him where.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn shows him how to step through the steps. It's a different ritual from the one they got Alex to use, but the end result is effectively the same.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll follow, then, and ask Temple to stick around when they get there.

"Temple says you have the genealogy research the investigator did when they were looking for us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The result is Flying!! He is much less tentative about it than Alex was, and his whole face lights up once he's in the air.

"This is so much easier," he marvels, hovering in the middle of the room. "My gift really isn't made for flying, I guess." He shakes the thought away, "Can we go outside?" He asks while doing a circuit of the room, "Temple said this place is on Earth, but no one's just wandering around, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn lifts into the air as well. "No one around, no. The joys of living in the middle of nowhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen quietly nods. "I do. I hope you don't mind that I have read it." He hands an envelope that was already on his desk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Outside, then! He might be giggling a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That's fine."

Alex takes the envelope. He stares down at it for a long moment. He only knows their mom's name because it's in their files. Her family, and their father? Nothing.

He opens it, tugging out the papers within, and looking them over.

"...Fuck." He reaches out for the nearest surface to steady himself on, staring at the words on the paper.

"We have siblings.Older siblings. By their father, who is still alive. And- "We have a nephew."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen comes closer to provide some support.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow. How many siblings? Are they sorcerers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Two - a brother and a sister, both older. The kid is the brother's. And I... don't know." He shuffles through the papers a bit, looking for information on that topic, and finding it pretty quickly.

"...Yeah, they are." He leans on Stephen a bit, stunned. "The whole family is. They're from Elan. But Ragna, and Germund and his wife and kid, live in Elsewhere, apparently. Our mom's family is from Elan, too - we're related on that side." He looks over that page.

"They're all dead - or presumed dead. Her brother vanished before we were born."

"...I guess this explains why they couldn't find anything about where we came from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, do you need a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... maybe," he admits quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." Hug. He calls his dad over to join the hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

He will be very hugged, then. It takes him a second to relax into it. He buries his face in Temple's shoulder and shudders a bit.

(How many times had they wished for someone to come for them, when they were kids? How long had they hoped they had some family, somewhere, before they gave up?)

"...I want to know what happened. Why were we raised on Earth? Why was our mom on her own? Why did no one come looking for us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are some theories. Do you want Temple to be here for the conversation? Maybe wait for your brother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jay's..." Busy. Alex has zero desire to call him down from the sky for a conversation like this. "I'll tell him later."

"Temple can stay," he glances at him, "If you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I absolutely want to stay, no worries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, do you want to sit down." He waves at the chairs in front of his desk. "Or a water or something? I have liquor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't-" He stops. If there was any time for a drink.

"...Sure. I'll have whatever's simplest."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen gets some glasses and mixes a brown liquid with a green one and adds some ice. Serving to the three of them.

It has a sweet minty taste under the alcohol. He waits until Alexei takes his first zip and has lowered the glass.

"I am going to be succinct. Your father was already married when he and your mother conceived you. A marriage of convenience for the alliance of the two families, which would explain why he wouldn't have acknowledged you two. And likely also why not even your family's mother took her in. Apparently her family was not in a stable situation, a war broke out in Elan ten years prior and the Starr family lost a lot because of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good thing he waited, it would have been a shame to spit out the drink all over his nice floors. As it is, Alex still half-chokes and has to take a moment to cough.

"...Okay," he says once he can breathe again. "Okay, so. A war? That..." Sounds terrifying, actually, given the addition of magic.

He shakes his head, "And he didn't help her? Help us? I-" Well, he's not sure he wants to meet him, now. A man who slept with a girl - he checks the papers - barely half his age, and then didn't help her and their twin sons when they were in need? Even with some kind of serious alliance on the line... he doesn't really sound like fatherhood material. But then, maybe there was a good reason.

His thoughts are scattered, all over the place. Too much new information in too little time. He takes another sip of his drink, leaning over it with his other hand at his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know why he did what he did. I am sorry. Take a moment to collect yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he sighs. He takes a moment, as suggested. And another, longer drink.

"...Do you know anything about our siblings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They work for the same organization that Temple does. The High Library of Magic. I believe your sister does research work on remote sites and your brother does some disaster relief around the dead city."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a pretty big organization, I'm guessing. Do you think Felix and the others there might have run into Germund?" Pause. "Will they want to meet us?" He wonders, uncertain. "If... our father put that much stock in that alliance..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably not. It is really big."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to try contacting them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," he says, immediately and without thought. Then he pauses to actually think it through.

"...Yes. Definitely. Not... right away, or anything. It can wait, until we're not in the middle of meeting this part of the family. But yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple pats his back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Stephen pats his hand.

"It's okay. I will arrange for things when you two are ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"Thank you." They've been very kind about all of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Franklyn and James are showing off flight maneuvers to each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is having the time of his life.

This kind of flying is new, but it's not hard to get the hang of, unlike his own style! (There were a lot of bruises involved in his first attempts to do more than float with it.)

He spirals up into the air, laughing, and then darts over to Franklyn, grinning brightly, "This is great!" Hug? Mildly tackle-ish hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Mildly tackle-ish maybe. Very Hug. Franklyn cackles and puts his arms and legs around the smaller boy as they spiral out through the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much hug!! He laughs, squeezing Franklyn around the middle, trusting him to control their spiral.

Permalink Mark Unread

He does. And they are getting closer to the house. "Want to play in water while your flight is still on? You can swim in your underwear, if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, does the flight make swimming different, I bet it does! Sure!" Where's the pool?

Permalink Mark Unread

The pool is next to the house. There is a wall around it, forming something that one might compare to a "G" shape, except with a section of the semi-circle being the wall of the house, making it straight. The inner leg of the "G" goes into the pool, forming an arc over the water. He is directing their flight towards the deck. "That smaller area over there, was meant to skinny dip in privacy, but we no longer have that restriction. You can swim nude or in your underwear if you want." Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Continued hug. "Ok," they will have to unhug to get undressed for swimming, which is too bad. He'll do it, though, pulling away from Franklyn to strip down. Down to nothing, that is. Why leave his underwear on to get soaked when he'll have to put his jeans on overtop them afterwards?

(The removal of his clothes really does show off how unhealthily skinny he is. It's not a truly dangerous level, yet, but he definitely looks... a little frail.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn looks mildly concerned, but does not comment, except. "We have some heated showers over there. If you don't want the thermal shock." He takes the clothes and piles them up in a piece of poolside furniture.

The removal of his clothes show that the family has really unfair genes. So unfair.

Permalink Mark Unread

So unfair. He stares a bit, as he'd said he would, and then his eyes dart away with a slight blush.

"Might as well," he shrugs, taking the opportunity to distract himself. He floats over to the showers and stands under the spray for a bit, slowly lowering the temperature, before going back to the pool.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn giggles at the staring, but does not seen to mind. With some gratuitous use of flight he showers himself and then kicks the wall and dives into the pool.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hovers just out of the pool for a moment, setting his feet on the surface so it looks like he's standing on the water. He takes a few 'steps', grinning, and then he slips down into the pool.

He can actually do a lot more with his gift in the water than in the air - people already float in water, after all, so he doesn't have to do that part himself. Still, the difference between making the water propel him and propelling himself through the water is pretty interesting! He bets he could do some pretty cool water effects and flips if he used both! It's tempting to try it out, but he refrains, for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are plenty of ways to play with water when you can also fly. Franklyn demonstrates.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oo, Jamie will copy him, and then try some variations on the theme! He probably spends more time floating above the water than in it, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's okay. Franklyn will mirror his above water maneuvers with underwater ones. He can hold his breath for quite a while.

Remarkably so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can he? That's interesting. Jamie has a pretty decent lung capacity himself, between swimming - he can carry air with him underwater, but the longer he can stretch it the better - and singing, though it's not as good as it once was. Maybe they should compare?

Permalink Mark Unread

They definitely should compare! How?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm... They could. Both stay under water and see how long before they have to go up to take a breath? They will have to float very close together, though, of course, to make sure neither is cheating somehow! Not that Jamie thinks Franklyn would cheat, but just in case, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they could hold each other while doing this? Like in a hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, what a good idea!

..There's other ways to check lung capacity, too. Ones that are much more comfortable and pleasant than holding your breath underwater. All it takes is keeping their mouths occupied. Would Franklyn like to try that instead?

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. Franklyn would like to be kissed very much.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's excellent, because Jamie would like to kiss him! He does that!

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn giggles into the kiss, but then starts reciprocating. His hands go exploring James back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn is cute and good. Jamie hums happily against his lips, threading his fingers into his hair and pressing close.

The texture of the skin on his back is uneven - the scars are well-healed, and aren't very obvious to the eye, but they can be felt just fine. Jamie gives no indication that he minds Franklyn touching his back - he's practically purring, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somewhat surprising, but not much given that he does have a health gift and as long James is enjoying himself.  Smooch. Petting.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's definitely enjoying himself, yes.

They can just keep snuggling and kissing? He doesn't really want to do anything else, though he'll go along with it if Franklyn does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn is entirely content with that. Snuggling and kissing a cute boy is great. Bonus for being naked in a pool.

Permalink Mark Unread

The skinny dipping does add to the experience, yeah.

The flight ritual will wear off eventually, right? He might not even notice when it does, given that he's otherwise occupied, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are very distracted, but their buoyancy is not entirely caused by water and eventually they sink a bit. "Oops. The ritual wore off." Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

-yes this is noticeable actually. "Oh." (Kiss!) He's too happy right now to be very sad about the flight wearing off.

"...Should we go back inside?" He wonders. He is supposed to be getting to know the whole family. Not just one of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to? You need to dry off, but we keep towns near the pool. You don't need to get dressed, I don't think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, I think I'll put on pants at least."

...Whenever that happens, anyway. He's not in a hurry. The sun is shining, the water is cool, and there's no good reason for them to stop snuggling right this minute. These are facts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex steps out of the door connecting the pool deck to the house, pausing when he sees what they're up to.

"...Well, I should have predicted that," he comments to the air and whoever else happens to be listening.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, hi?" Franklyn says, and then he looks at Alex's face. "Is everything alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm... fine. Just learned how we're related to you, and about a few more surprise relations on top of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie focuses more attention on Alex.

"...Surprise relations?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." He glances over at Franklyn, shrugs. Not like it's a secret.

"We've got a living father. And two older siblings. And their mom might not be happy to learn we exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

He's silent, processing that for a long moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know I am wet and naked, but would you like a hug too?" Franklyn asks Alexei.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'd like a hug, yeah. Multiple hugs." The more hug the better.

Jamie paddles to the edge and pulls himself out of the pool.

Permalink Mark Unread

He backs off a bit, "You'll get my shirt wet, Jay-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sigh. He only brought one change of clothes.

...He does relax into it pretty quick, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn (who can fly under his own power) just lifts off the pool. After a pause he makes a detour to get some towels and then hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie will take a towel and quickly dry his hair and upper body off before tying it around his waist. And then back to hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. He folds a bit in their arms, pressing his face against Jamie's shoulder, and definitely doesn't cry even a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn will also join the hug, if the twins don't mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't mind, no. Jamie will lean on him, so Alex does too.

(Jamie's pretty much fine. He's curious, but won't be devastated if their blood siblings and father don't want them. If that's the case, well, it'll suck, but nothing gained or lost, really. He'll still have Alex at the end of it, at the least. And maybe they'll have the Graywards, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn is sure hugging them like they will have the Grayward too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn is a Good.

...He's going to just keep hugging Alex until he stops Definitely Not Crying on him or someone comes looking for them, if that seems alright with everyone involved.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Alex doesn't have any objections.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

And eventually, Morgan wanders out. They might even hear the moment he stops right on his tracks. "Okay. This looks like a moment, but the food is getting cold."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex stiffens a bit at his voice, pulling away from the other two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie lets him go, looking at Morgan over his shoulder.

"...Right," he breathes out on a sigh. "Yeah... Give us a sec?" He offers Alex the towel to wipe his face with, along with another quick hug, and then looks around for his pants.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure... I am used to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn helps him find his pants.

Permalink Mark Unread

He will put on pants, then, and just carry the rest of his clothes inside.

He pauses in front of Alex on the way to the door, taking the towel back to wipe his face better. Sorry, towel, you will just have to deal with some black streaks. Hopefully the Graywards' laundry system is up to removing them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Jay is done, Alex glances over at Franklyn('s face), shifting a bit uncomfortably.

"...Sorry. For..." Crying on him. He clears his throat, looking away again.

Permalink Mark Unread

He pats his back. "It's okay, buddy. A lot of emotions all around."

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts, offering Franklyn a small, somewhat wry smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're used to it?" Jamie asks Morgan as they head inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Emotions or male nudity? I guess I am used to, on both accounts. If only out of being over exposure, pun unintended."

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn laughs before controlling himself again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Specifically male nudity? I guess there aren't a lot of women to get nude around here..." there is a bit of an imbalance, he notes. Though that makes sense, given the need for male relatives...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. It's really tragic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. I am the only one that enjoys actually staying naked? Aaron is the only one that does with any regularity and that's mostly because he sometimes wants to dive in the pool without going up and grab swimming trucks."

They reach the kitchen where there are a few covered dishes with a savory smell coming off them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes I don't get dressed if I'm at home all day? Saves me from getting paint all over my clothes, for one thing. I think I'd want to wear pants at least if I knew we were gonna have guests, but I wouldn't mind if I got walked in on while nude..."

Food! New and Interesting food? It sure smells good. He suddenly notices how hungry he is, and lifts a cover to take a look.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, another artist. Sawney is one. Though, he doesn't ever get paint on his clothes. I don't think."

This particular cover hides what appear to be baked potato slices with some kind of cream on top, or at least the smell is like potatoes, he can count five different colors.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can come up with a vegetarian option, but I am hoping it isn't necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not vegetarian," Alex assures him. He hangs back to let Jamie grab what he wants first.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't? That can't be easy. Paint gets everywhere. Especially places you don't expect it to be able to! You get some on your hands and then you touch your face and now you've got a paint mustache. Or you get an itch on your shoulder, or you flick the brush a bit too much and then you get it all over your shirt... And that's just with traditional painting. For the really messy stuff you've gotta put down sheets or else you'll end up giving the whole room a new paint job..."

"This looks really good," he adds, glancing over at Morgan, "Is some of this stuff from other worlds?" What's on the other dishes? Also, where are the plates...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sawney is basically a robot, and we are teaching him to be human. He used to alphabetize his watercolors." About the food he says. "Some, yeah. Concentrated stuff to fix malnourishment."

There is a variety, but there is a theme of... not quite finger food, but definitely food one could eat by hand. Sandwiches. Small pastries. Something that might be a really foreign and pygmy variety of pizza. Most smell more on the savory non-sweet end of the spectrum.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then, he will pick something off a tray and start eating. A sandwich, first, but those pastries are tempting...

"Basically a robot?" He asks between bites, "Nothing wrong with being organized, though I am definitely not that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much of this should those of us who are not malnourished be eating," Alex asks, approaching the table and considering his options.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morgan is exaggerating, Sawney is fine. Just very organized."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go ahead. This is technically for everyone, they should wonder in any minute and grab something."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, he'll try a tiny pizza, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tastes nice. Fluffier and with what might be a mix of eggs and chicken.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh. Interesting. He will sample other things too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom.

"This is really good," he tells Morgan, "Do you guys eat like this all the time? Or is this a special occasion due to," he waves at himself demonstratively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could say both? I did pick something that you could snack on later. And some of it is like, super-food that we get regularly but not in this concentration."

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn floats so his a foot off the ground, in a higher voice he says. "They like your food. Say, thanks, Morgan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Morgan."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie laughs lightly, watching Franklyn float with a smile and a look of mixed delight and longing.

(Alex snorts and shifts to lean against him, reminding him to stay on the ground. It's not a necessary reminder at the moment, but it's habit.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam walks in. "Already?" He says once he spots Franklyn with a towel around his waist. He picks up a not-pizza-thingie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't mind," Jamie tells him brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any minding Alex might have done is fixed by the towel, actually, leaving him mostly appreciative of the view. It makes a good distraction from his other thoughts, though he's not staring or anything. He nods in agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got to make them feel part of the family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess." He says picking up another snack at random.

Permalink Mark Unread

He raises an eyebrow, eyes flicking between his brother and Franklyn. "Part of the family, is it? Very welcoming of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie nudges him a bit with his elbow for that comment, snorting.

He's still watching Franklyn float, curious about the details of it, now. "How much can you lift with that gift? And, I'm guessing it's stamina? Given how much you use it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stamina, yes. I could lift a cow if I tried and didn't care much about how long flight was or for the cow's well-being when I dropped it. Which I usually do."

Permalink Mark Unread

He bounces on his toes a bit as he steps a bit closer, food briefly forgotten. "How long could you lift me?" He is nowhere near as heavy as a cow friend (Franklyn: cute). Flying under someone else's power sounds fun! Also hot. Also he recognizes that he just got to fly for over an hour but like... that's no reason not to ask!

Permalink Mark Unread

One track mind, Alex thinks, rolling his eyes while he bites into another not-pizza.

Permalink Mark Unread

The answer involves a bit of math. You can use sorcerer's extra stamina the conventional way and that tires overtime, and Franklyn's flight can lift other things, but also tires overtime.

In short, he can keep up a long time if they have regular breaks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie will pay attention to the math as well as the short answer, this seems like important information.

"Hmm, how hard is it to learn to share your stamina with other people?" Nothing wrong with doing it that way, but if he can help lessen the burden on Franklyn he'd like to. He wouldn't be surprised to learn that it's more than he could learn any time soon, though. They only just started those breathing exercises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"With our sort of stamina? I think a about a week?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool. What does learning that involve?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex passes him a pastry while he asks this, also paying close attention to the conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A mental action as easy to describe as describing what it feels like to tell your arm to move."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Temple mentioned he was teaching the basics of acquiring gifts? More of that, you will first learn how to transfer Breath, then learning Stamina is sort of easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Yeah," he nods, "We can do more of that later, then," he decides, glancing over at Alex, who nods as well. "Does already having a gift help at all?"

(Nomnom pastry)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right. It does, not sure how much? But at least you should be used to having the sensation of spending lifeforce. That helps a lot."

He takes a pastry and hoovers with his legs in a lotus position.

Him being in a towel, this has a result.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We all full-brothers here!" Adam blurts out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not!" Jamie corrects him brightly.

"That's good," he adds, "I definitely know what it feels like to spend my health, though I don't use my breath gift much."

Permalink Mark Unread

("So it'd be okay if you were half-brothers?" Alex murmurs, amused.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant the room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He means that the three of us share the same biological mom. He was just being weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's your breath gift again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

("Why being half-brothers would make it okay?")

Permalink Mark Unread

("It sounded like you were objecting to being full-brothers specifically." He shakes his head, "I was joking," he adds.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I call it whispering. It lets me talk to anyone in sight without anyone else hearing it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. That sounds helpful. I am sure Temple will figure out something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh," he's hesitant, "Sure, I guess..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex leans against him, "Pushing," he notes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, I should get used to it, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaron walks. "Hey, the food is finally served." He gives Franklyn a casual slap in the ass and reaches for the food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go wash that hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Alex observes this with a raised eyebrow but says nothing.)

Jamie pauses with the pastry half-way to his mouth, "...I think the food's been unavoidably tainted at this point," he points out, waving his own free hand. "If 'recently touched Franklyn's butt' does it. Should have washed our hands, too," he admits, sheepish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The pool has wards to keep the water pure. And I trust Franklyn's butt more than Aaron's hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaron is already mid-bite but protests by baping his hand on Morgan's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I thought there was something weird about that pool. I guess it didn't smell like chlorine..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you all live here, normally?" Alex asks, looking around at all the Graywards in the room. It's a big house but, as he'd noted to Temple last night, this is a lot of personality in one room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do, yeah. Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mn, just... wondering how you deal with so many people living in each others' space." Jay and him do that, but there's only two of them, and they rarely fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Years of practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And a lot of trial and error."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys make it sound like we are borderline war zone or something. Like, okay, I am probably the most combative person here, but I manage to deal. Most of the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you all do around here, usually? I mean I guess you're probably in school," he waves at Adam, "But the rest of you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We all are doing a mix of long distance magical college courses and getting personal tutors on the same. Adam too, but less so given the aforementioned school. I take care of the house so people here have more options than starvation and PB&Js. My focus is more medical in magic terms."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, now I want some peanut butter. And what he said. I am basically learning how to be a magical bodyguard from Sawney. Learning how to fight magically and casting wards. It suits our needs." He goes to the fridge.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sawney used to be a bodyguard, now he is... some sort of guard. I guess. Defending against monsters and stuff. But now he is honing his artistic hobbies too. We all train how to fight but only the two of them have it as a thing." Franklyn explains. "I take care of animals around here. Have a shelter for them nearby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which was great. Uh. I like music, robots, video games and stuff." He says feeling lame. "Topher likes art too but he is more into history and is the only one of us learning anything about dad's job."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lots of stuff he wants to ask about there, but first- "I guess you'd need some people in the family to kill them when they come out... What are the monsters like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex keeps an ear on that conversation, but he actually addresses Adam, himself, "What kind of music?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly, I like instrumental and classic stuff," he then continues with a more elaborate explanation. His favorite instrument is the piano, but he tries nearly anything he can get his hand on.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly like... giant animals with different animal parts mashed together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here, I have pictures."

He shows them pictures on his phone. An eyeless deer-sort of thing with antlers that have what appear to be butterfly wings stuck on them. Something that looks like two crabs atop of each other and merged somewhat, there are glowing cracks in the shell. A bear with a bat-like face, the picture is high contrast and appears to have been taken with night-vision. The head of a reptilian like creature with a very long tongue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm, he listens to some of that, though most of what he actually writes these days has lyrics. He hasn't had the chance to spend much time on a piano in the past few years, but he played more regularly when he was still in school. A few other instruments, too - violin, a bit, and upright bass, and harp, along with guitar, of course, and a few more. He's out of practice with most of them, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans in to look.

"Wow, they look like creatures out of a horror story." His eyes linger the deer in particular. Creeeepy. "Are they magic? Like, beyond just the fact that they exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam sometimes tries to compose music, but he is never sure of what he does. He has most of those instruments here, if Alex wants to practice again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of them are kinda of ugly cute, in Franklyn's opinion, but yeah. Very horror story stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are very magic. Made of it, and their bodies vanish after a few hours post-killing. Their original purpose was to serve as guardians."

Permalink Mark Unread

He'd love a chance to practice again, yeah. Any specific problems with the composing? He's not entirely sure how to help with that, he never actually took a class on it or anything, but he can try.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what about not having enough people tied in sends them out of control?" He wonders. "I guess you probably don't know? Based on what Temple and Felix said."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is never quite... satisfied about his work, but a second opinion from someone who does music would help.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not sure what they said, but, as far we can tell, that's the problem. There is probably a secret to actually using them, but as it is, something or other is causing them to be aggressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. What do they do, if they get out of the forest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can listen, sure. After we finish eating?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They continue the trend of attacking anything on sight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," he looks away. "I'm... not much of a fighter. I get by, but," he shrugs. "Alex might be interested, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks over at the larger group, attention drawn by the mention of his name.

"Hm?"

"Monster fighting," Jamie clarifies for him.

"Oh." He thinks for a long moment, "If it needs doing, I wouldn't mind it, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, great! I wanted some of our lost relatives to get into that, so I can go all military sergeant on them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not, like, a cool anime fight. Honestly, most of the time it's just waiting around."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eyebrow raise. "I suppose so long as you don't come at my hair with intent I can deal with some monster fighter boot camp. Don't expect me to stand around motionless while you scream insults at me, though."

"Wasn't expecting it to be," he tells Adam. "Fights usually aren't a lot like what much fiction would have you believe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promise I won't touch your hairlocks."

Permalink Mark Unread

He ruffles Alex's hair, "Wouldn't want to wreck any of his many gorgeous features," he says, stepping out of the way of the retaliating smack.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course not. We don't actually have military training, but we do have training and sparring. I take James is not in condition to consider self-defense lessons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not?" He shrugs, looking down. "But I already know how to get away from fights at least, and avoid hits. I guess it might be different with the monsters, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant human-on-human defense lessons. I like to teach them just on principle that everyone should know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," he nods. "Knowing how to defend myself better wouldn't hurt? But, yeah, it should probably wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you teach, usually? I wouldn't say no to actual training in hand-to-hand, either, most of what I know was pulled from books and online and put into practice... more or less successfully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which I have fondness of, but I mostly learned because there was a instructor in town when I was little. I mostly know and practice the Elsewhere equivalent of Mixed Martial Arts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good?" He shrugs, "It's been a few years since I did any research on specific schools. I was mostly just looking for a few edges, here and there, anyway. Doesn't take that much to put down a few drunk idiots or teenaged assholes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair, fair. They are sure a let down after you fought things that are two store tall."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Two stories? I didn't really get a good look at those pictures." He frowns, "How isolated is this place, anyway? If no one's noticed them escaping the woods, if they do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Size varies, but they do tend to be bigger than a horse, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's off the way. At least twenty minutes from other living souls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, once every few months is not a lot of opportunity to see a monster. There are tons of animals in the woods that people never see or notice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True enough," he agrees. "Temple said you can communicate with animals?" He asks Franklyn. "I'm guessing you can't with these?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can, but their instinct is to kill me... and everything. Hard to build anything out of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess it would be," he agrees quietly. "And the only way to fix this is to find more people to attune to the vault?"

Permalink Mark Unread

(Would Franklyn like a hug?)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Franklyn is not particularly upset, but he would love a hug.)

"As far we know. It might be possible there is a magical lever that we can pull to tone it down, but the need sufficient people to stabilize the thing looks like a hard limit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Temple hopes that there is a way to tamper with the thing once there is a better grasp of magic or at least divine how it works, but that's a long way and the sort of poking that causes monsters to jump out of the thing as a defense."

Permalink Mark Unread

(That's fine, you don't have to be sad to be hugged)

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Inconvenient, but I suppose it makes sense." As an extremely faulty security system, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Hug)

Permalink Mark Unread

There is not a soul in this house that disagrees with Alexei's unspoken sentiment. "We will eventually figure it out, but it's depending on either finding more of us, or, well, making them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mn," he nods. "I wonder if they'll find anything about that vanished uncle," he muses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be great. Even, if it is just the one guy, and it might not be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. Hopefully 'missing' means 'ran away', not 'mysteriously dead'."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "But they are looking into it anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. He goes back to the food, out of questions for the moment. He passes Jamie another pastry as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can finish dinner talking things of less consequence than lost relatives and magic. Then Adam can show Alex his musical paraphernalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Music things! Alex would like to refamiliarize himself with various instruments, but he can also listen to Adam's attempts at composition. What seems to be the problem?

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly indecision, Adam is the sort that tries every single variation of a song, and then can't decide between the multiple choices. It's also might be relevant that he has super-human pitch and no one around that's into music.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's really nothing wrong with having a lot of variations? Artists will play a song half-a-dozen different ways over their careers, if not more. He doesn't have to whittle it down to one if he likes the others as well. Alex can point out the ones he likes best, if Adam wants, but different people have different tastes, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adam appreciates having someone to talk to this regardless.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's certainly no hardship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie goes looking for Temple once they're all done eating, peeking behind various unlocked doors to see if he might be behind them.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is at the library doing something at the computer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He will approach the computer, then, looking around the library curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a two-store library, the size of the bedrooms he has already seen with a bay window that works as a reading nook and that overlooks a small private garden. All shelves are against the walls, but they cover all the available wall space. The rest of the furniture is relegated to the center of the room. There is a spiral staircase to one side, leading to the second floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oo. He takes a detour to climb the staircase, wondering if there's another one of those windows up on the second floor. He pauses before he goes too far up, remembering that he'd had a reason for coming in here. He leans over the railing to peer down at Temple. "Hey, are you busy?" He asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is another one, yes. From that angle he can see the door to another room, and through a window in that door what looks like Sawney.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not. Do you need book recommendations?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, the other painter!

"...I was going to ask about some more magic lessons, but, uh. What's through that door up there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, Sawney uses it as an art room. Knock if you want to come in..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Decisions, decisions!

"Is he up for company? He has the door closed, though I suppose that could just be to keep any smells from getting into the library."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can knock. There are wards against smells and paint itself, but he keeps the door close out of habit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," he nods, "I do still wanna ask about that, but give me a bit?" He waves, heading up to the door to the art room. He knocks, as directed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come in." Says two voices. Topher is inside as well, reading a book. Sawney is not currently painting, but instead cleaning a brush. The room is impeccable, but the faint smell of acrylic can be felt, and there are several drawings on a table.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, relative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Afternoon, cousins!" He greets with a laugh. He looks over at the table curiously, "It came up when we were eating that you're an artist?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trying to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He is a natural."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I see?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Of course. I am still working on most of these."

The drawings include things like Topher's face, a naked young man who might be Franklyn, a surprisingly colorful snail, a very detailed picture of a branch side by side a very stylized picture of what is likely a branch.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, these are great!" He looks them over delightedly, before glancing back at Sawney, "I wish I'd thought to bring some smaller paintings. The sketchbook I'm using right now is in my bag, though, if you want to see at some point?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Thank you and I would love to see them. If you want, you can use the materials here." He waves at the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do not include me among the materials to be used."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! I'm not much into body art, don't worry," he assures Topher. "Actually, since I'm here anyway, can I use some paper and pencils? There's a few things I've been meaning to get out of my head all day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you could use him as a muse, and of course."

Sawney puts the brush he was cleaning away, on a mug with other cleaned brushes all neatly organized. And pulling out a drawer with more neat rolls, this times pencils. Papers are on a (also neatly stacked) pile over there.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives Topher an assessing look, and then a smile, "Maybe. I like... catching people in motion. In action, sometimes, or just doing something that takes their whole attention. Capturing emotion, and passion." He shrugs, taking a few papers from the pile and setting them on the table in front of him. He leans over it, pencil in hand, and starts sketching. He doesn't stick to one paper at a time, switching from one to the next as he recalls another detail. It quickly becomes clear that he has an excellent visual memory, a good eye, and a lot of practice at this. The images he's drawing come into focus gradually, all of them quite clear and growing more detailed as he goes on.

Temple, caught in the middle of an explanation, face bright with happiness while Felix watches with a fond smile. A close up of Alex's face in shadow, expression devastating in how relieved it is, face wet with tears. The portal from the first warehouse, the trucks and room around it more outlines than anything, all attention and detail on the hole in reality, and the room on the other side. Franklyn in the water, as seen from above the surface, Jamie's reflection superimposed over his body.

He stops switching so much once all of the sketches are recognisable, focusing on one image at a time until he's mostly satisfied. He has a lot of trouble with the last one, coming back to it again and again, trying to make the water and reflections work right, erasing and redrawing. Eventually he gives up with a sigh, glancing up and blinking around the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Topher went back to reading.)

Sawney is watching intently and grinning. "You're extremely good."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins back, blushing just a little bit, "Thanks! I can't quite get this one right, but man, water is hard." He shrugs, pulling another sheet over and starting an idle sketch of a moondog. "So, you paint, and I guess you must draw, but do you do any other kinds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Water is the hardest. And you mean art? I have tried a bit of everything, sculpting was sufficiently complicated to decide to pick it up later once I have a better grasp of two dimension. I am a terrible musician."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean art, yeah. Stone carving? Or, like, clay and such? I did some basic sculpture stuff while I was still in school, but that gets pretty expensive, and I like painting better. For music, well, Alex is the musician, but I sing for him sometimes." The moondog gains a rough snowy backdrop to romp around in and the outline of a planet in the sky. He's hardly looking at it, though, attention mostly on Sawney.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sawney keeps being impressed with his talent. "Stone, with the right magic you can work on nearly any material like clay though. And I tried a few other materials, like stuff from a junkyard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oo, you could, couldn't you? And found sculpture is fun! I didn't do much of that, but there was a unit on it. I never really got very into three-dimensional art -  I figure it's a whole other skill-set than 2D stuff, besides learning to really look at things." The moondog gains moondog friends. Wouldn't want it to be lonely!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Reshaping things, coloring things, fixing glass that you broke mid process. And I am still learning how to look, yeah. When did you learn about moondogs? I don't think Earth has then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There were some kids making them when we passed through Elan on the way here. Felix explained the legend to us." He looks down at the drawing, adding some stars and smaller details, before tapping his pencil over the outline of Elan. "Hm, do you know what Elan's continents look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do. I probably have a map around here, but..." he picks up another pencil and paper and sketches the Elan's continental masses inside two distinct circles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!" He watches, eventually picking the continents in the second circle to add to the moondog sketch. "Hm, I think it's done," he decides once he's done that. "Maybe I'll give it to Felix." He looks through the five sketches, making a face at the one of Franklyn in water, and then stacking them up. "Do you have a particular system for storing your pencils?" He asks, offering the one he was using. His art supplies aren't very organized, but this isn't his art room, and he doesn't want to mess anything up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do. But I am trying to be more flexible about it."

He pushes the pencil across the table as to make a point he can leave things disorganized.

Then he immediately picks it up and puts it in the correct place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Topher snorts. "I am sure Felix will appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute. "It's good that you're trying? I can try to follow your system, too, though."

"I figure he won't mind, anyway," he adds to Topher, laughing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, he will definitely be happy about it. And I am sure Franklyn would appreciate knowing you drew him-" blink. "He is already naked? That was fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, does he usually pace himself?" He asks, laughing, "We did go swimming, if that makes his speed make more sense. And I definitely don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, fair." Topher says maybe noting some dampness in James' hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a little bit damp, still, yeah. He runs a hand through it.

"I guess I should go ask Temple about magic lessons, I did say I'd be back," he says. "Thanks again," he tells Sawney.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take you up on that!"

He ducks back out into the library, papers in hand. Is Temple still at the computer?

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is. "Hey, had fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! Drew some stuff. Sawney and Topher are great." He shows him some of the sketches - all of them except the one of Alex.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, nice. Ooh. Oooh, I like what did to my face."

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles, "I didn't do anything to your face but capture what was already there. You're really something when you're talking about magic, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am truly am. Do you want to witness another example?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, if you don't mind. That's why I came looking originally. More magic lessons!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More magic lessons! Temple is delighted.

Jamie is delighted to watch him be delighted! He's also paying attention, though. More breathing exercises, or something else?

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly breathing, though he can cycle through what it feels to have been given stamina, wakefulness and health. It's easier to master breath first and then you can branch of off that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds good. He will keep practicing!

Permalink Mark Unread

They can get occupied like this the entire afternoon.

Permalink Mark Unread

At some point Alex wanders in as well, humming a bit, before quieting down to join the lesson.

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple is glad to teach both of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan eventually swings by to bring a snack and tell that Henry and Gabe should be coming tomorrow to meet them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie will have a snack, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex continues to appreciate Morgan's priorities.

"The cousins, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I mean, I think you and us and Henry are all sets of cousins, but Gabe is Henry's cousin and not ours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's what I meant. Though, I couldn't tell you how all that 'third cousin twice removed' stuff works, so I guess 'cousins' works for the rest of us, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be fun to meet more people," Jamie adds between bites. "You think Aaron will be up to teaching some stuff tomorrow, before we have to go? To Alex, I mean, I'll just watch." He'd forgotten to ask before they finished eating earlier.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, pretty sure. Warn him to not wake you up at the crack of dawn."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs, "We can get up at dawn, sometimes." Maybe not tonight, though. They didn't get a lot of sleep last night, and he probably won't be waking them up with nightmares in the early morning, either. They might actually sleep in. He nods, "We'll ask him not to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaron promises to wait until a later date to wake them up at dawn. One can't acquire a sergeant costume that fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

What, he doesn't have one already? With all these younger siblings?

Permalink Mark Unread

A lapse of judgement, but he does have that wake up call. He plays it on his phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs, "I'm sure you've only ever used this power for good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, but, sometimes one must sacrifice things for the greater good. Like his siblings' rest."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex shakes his head, smiling slightly, "We'll see you in the morning, then," he tells Aaron.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you in the morning then."

They can settle in for the night then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is very happy with his moondog drawing and hugs James in thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs! Yay! Jamie's always happy to have his drawings received well.

And then to bed. The twins say their good nights, and retreat to the bedroom they're using, making use of the attached bathroom to prepare for bed. Then they crawl under the covers and curl together, talking quietly about the day until they fall asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one wakes them up in the morning, with or without old stock music. Breakfast is prepared.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they don't wake at the crack of dawn! It's still pretty early when they come down to breakfast, though, Jamie first with sketchpad in hand, Alex a few moments later, hair still a bit wet from the shower.

"Morning, Morgan," Jamie greets, setting his sketchpad on the table while he takes a look at what's for breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for making breakfast," Alex adds quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning you two. Sleep well?" He says giving them a glance and then returning to the eggs he is preparing. "And you're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaron walks in a moment after them. "Hey, there." He says sleepily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure did," Jamie tells Morgan. "Didn't wake up in the middle of the night even once."

He giggles a bit when Aaron comes in, "Hey! Are you just getting up now? I hope we didn't wake you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't," He says pouring himself some coffee. "I just need some daily dose of work juice."

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes a face, "Ah, coffee. Do you guys have any tea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex will have some coffee, now that he's noticed it. Assuming Aaron doesn't drink all of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morgan shows them where the tea is.

(And Aaron doesn't actually drink all of it.)

"Right, so we got all caught up with yesterday introductions, that we forgot to mention that we should check if the lifeforce vault recognizes you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess we should do that. But what are the odds of them not being our relatives?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "No idea, not like we can confirm anything from our side except the names our mother gave us."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tea! "Might as well check," Jamie agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "It will mostly go to the middle of the woods and cast a spell on both of you - I guess we can do only one of you - we should call Franklyn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is he awake at this hour?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Franklyn is awake and feeding the animals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, Call him for breakfast, you mean? I could go get him! If one of you can point me in the right direction, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He means, that Franklyn in a short walk away in a shelter for animals he takes care of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, has he already eaten then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Afraid so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple shows up alongside Felix.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw- Oh, morning Temple, Felix." He settles at the table and starts flipping through his sketchbook, occasionally taking a sip of tea.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I help with anything?" Alex asks Morgan, wandering over to the stove.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." Morgan gives Alexei  a task.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning, slept well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He offers Felix a bright smile, "Yeah, actually, really well. Better than I have in a while."

(Alexei: does a task.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to hear. If have been having problems we can give you some sleep-aid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have any trouble actually falling asleep, just getting back to sleep once I've woken up in the middle of the night. And I wouldn't want to be forced to keep sleeping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, that still sounds like a solvable problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix pats Temple's shoulder to interrupt him. "Anyway, I think I will depart around the same time when Henry and Gabe arrive, like, literally, I think I will go in the same transport that they come back, but we still don't know exactly when they arrive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, our only plan for the day is take the twins to the lifeforce vault and then have a training session."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me," Jamie says, happy enough to leave the topic of his sleep issues behind for now. "If the test says we're related..." He looks over at Alex, who nods at him from his place near the stove.

"If it does, we'll stick around, if you'll have us? We'll have to go back to pack up and so Lex can quit, either later today or tomorrow, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

The Grayward sound pleasant surprised about this. "Sure. Dad will be very happy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He sure. I mean, we will. Not to discourage you, but are you sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There really isn't anything holding us there. We would have packed up and moved on in a couple months anyways. If this doesn't work out, we're no worse off than we were when we got here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex shrugs, "If everything we've been told is true, staying here for a while seems like our best option. Safer than trying to navigate the other worlds ourselves, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very valid point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Couple of months sounds doable enough to give you the ropes on not getting lost Elsewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pun unintended by Morgan, but definitely intended by whoever came up with the terminology."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, laughing a bit. "Sounds good."

Breakfast?

Permalink Mark Unread

Breakfast! Then they may prepare to the lifeforce vault.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do they need to bring anything besides themselves?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some stuff to cast the lifeforce analysis. Also, how about if they flew there?

Permalink Mark Unread

What an excellent idea!

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case, they can recruit Franklyn (he accepts) and him, the twins, plus Temple and Aaron may fly towards the forest.

While it still shouldn't be too dangerous, they stick closer to the tree cover, in part to follow the trail path below and in part so Franklyn can check the state of local wild life.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn! Jamie will bounce up to him and hug him, assuming he's not in the middle of something when they find him.

And then, Flying!!! He manages to contain himself enough not to stray from the group, sticking close to Franklyn to watch as a distraction. How is the wildlife doing?

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex's eyes follow Jamie, a slight smile forming on his face as he watches him.

"Are there other dangers than the monsters in here?" He asks the other two as they fly through the trees.

Permalink Mark Unread

The animal life is doing great! It knows Franklyn, small birds will on occasion fly up and perch on the man's hand. And Franklyn explains that they have trained the animals to warn when something is going on, it's limited, but it helps indicate that something needs their attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No huge animals, but we can't, you know, take every poisonous creepy crawler from a forest. There are some markings and stops with cameras to catch people that get lost."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Alex's summary of Temple's description of Franklyn is finally explained. Franklyn: Actual Fairy Tale Princess. This is extremely cute.)

Do they have signals or something they should learn? Beyond, like, 'if a bunch of animals are running away from something you probably should too'. Also, will the birds let Jamie take a closer look at them or are they shy?

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, "People hike around here sometimes?" He pauses, "There's really no stories at all? I guess, what, twenty years might not be long enough to build up a 'forest of the cryptids' legend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't really hike that close, but close enough that's relatively cheap put up divergences. There are stories from, like, before the tragedy about our family being devil worshipers, and stuff. And we try to be discreet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stories after the tragedy are more to the effect of 'I hear that Stephen Grayward killed his family for the insurance money' and 'Stephen Grayward runs a secret brothel and all the kids are the whores' children and not his' and wilder stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

Main consistent sign is if a bird lands on you repeatedly it means that you should start moving. At first, they would make some kind of sound, but they figure it's better if the bird didn't. Some birds still will scream at you, though. It's hard to communicate and train concepts more complex than that. Not in this scale.

The birds are not shy, not when Franklyn is around. And may accept petting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow. That's... vicious. They think he runs a brothel out of his own home? Out in the middle of the woods? I guess a rumour doesn't have to be plausible to be spread..." He'd ask about their mothers but he vaguely recalls Temple mentioning that Stephen had cheated on his wife after the tragedy, so it's probably a sensitive subject.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll be sure to leave the area if a bird ever lands on him/screams at him, then. At the moment, though, he will pet the birds who will let him do so! Soft feathers! Little wings! So cute. He is going to be drawing birds and wings again all evening, he just knows it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's mostly people being bored. Anyway, when we swing around town the official story is simply that dad made bad decisions out of grief."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

Their destination is noticeable for being a clearing, or maybe a group of oddly-shaped clearings. There are some ruins, mostly crumbling from the exposure from the elements, but some marks are sure indicative of unnatural claws. They may notice a weird quietness to the woods in this area.

"Land there." Temple indicates a mostly dry bare patch of dirt.

Permalink Mark Unread

They land.

Alex looks over at the ruins curiously, "There used to be buildings here?" His voice is hushed, trying not to stand out too much against the quiet atmosphere.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, the family's old home. Though it's mostly dismantled," he points, "that huge rectangular outline of walls over there is actually where they built a warehouse around the house's former ruins."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple starts unpacking ritual paraphernalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was the house destroyed during the... tragedy? Or the warehouse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Can Jamie help with unpacking?

Permalink Mark Unread

(He can.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"The house was destroyed, then they built a warehouse around the ruins to contain it. There were stray magic going, and they couldn't leave it exposed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. What was the stray magic doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Weird temperatures, some points were freezing or burning though I was told that was not particularly common, just noticeable. Several bits of the house were floating midair. That was more dangerous, floating slow moving debris can still hurt you if you try to force your way through. At least one spot caused vivid hallucinations - we have no idea where that came from. Early on there was more chaos, but those are the ones that stuck. It was mostly ward effects that got distorted and corrupted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh." He really does not know nearly enough about how sorcery works. "It's stopped since? The remainder of the wards... ran out of energy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. We did help some along the way. But the zone is safe to travel through like we are doing. Except it's inside the monster manifestation zone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm," he nods. "Do they come on any sort of schedule? The monsters."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Every few months, averaging to two and a half. Even if you guys don't stay it should let us break to three. Maybe four if you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple looks slightly uncomfortable. "It's not a linear progression, but not a far off guess. And I think I am done here." He says, with the spell circle complete.

Permalink Mark Unread

He heads over to the circle. "So staying close to the vault helps, too? And, what do we do, here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie waits for instructions as well, looking over the spell circle curiously. More arcane writing like the book yesterday?

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does. Just being attuned at all to the vault helps even if you're on another world. I just need you two to stay over there."

A fair bit of arcane writing, a couple of weird metallic objects and a bowl of some kind of herb.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would help some if we could live here, I mean, in the immediate area, but not enough that's worth the risk of being this close to where the monsters manifest."

Permalink Mark Unread

They will stay over here then.

"When did the last one show up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Five weeks. Beetle thing, blended into the shadows, couldn't get a good picture of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you get time to take pictures in between fighting it, anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do not underestimate our desire for selfies. But seriously, the people that runs our security can give support and sometimes take pictures as long they don't hurt the creatures."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, of course." Pause. "Why do the monsters leave the surrounding area dead if someone else kills them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, the vault can sort of connect to living things in the area. It's rare to do a magical effect to do that without a caster guiding it. And one of the reasons why this place was not bombed into oblivion, yet."

Then he is busy with proper casting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"People want to eventually figure out how it works." Aaron explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can use the lifeforce of other living things if you use a ritual to drain. It's just not advised, because to manipulate it you have to get it into your own lifeforce, and that can be as dangerous as mixing animal blood into your own blood."

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries not to move too much, not knowing how still he needs to be for this.

"'Bombed to oblivion'. Would that have actually helped? I was sort of getting the sense that the vault isn't exactly physical?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaron makes a so-so gesture. "It's anchored to the land and if you add or remove bits of it the physical connection changes to accommodate the change. But if you do it fast enough - such as with enough dynamite - the effect breaks. The lifeforce vault would be gone, there would be a huge crater and the sudden die off of the entire nature as far the eye can see, alongside any humans not evacuated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pleasant." Pause. "Sort of sounds like that dead city. It would drain the surrounding area?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are not wrong. Though, the dead city's goal was more benign. Just slowly stockpiling power so you can have buildings that fix themselves. A lot of the vault's features are just kind of 'fuck you, people'."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Yeah, I've been getting that idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie has been following along while also paying close attention to what Temple is doing. "How long does this take?" He asks. His tone isn't impatient, he's just curious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Squint. "I think the analysis part already started, and he is doing is casting some modal parts of the ritual to figure something out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Temple speaks up. "There is some weird interactions with the fact that they are twins, and I was triple checking it doesn't mean that they count as one person or as an error and thus defaulting to zero."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really? Huh. We're not a glitch, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And it recognizes us as relatives?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex smiles, "Good to know we weren't wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!" He shifts a bit, "Can we move now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hug!"

Hug. Is Temple close enough to be reeled into the hug as well, because Temple: also deserves hugs. Oh, and Aaron too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Graywards join the hug. Aaron might get Alexei to join as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex will half-heartedly attempt to stay out of it, but allows himself to be pulled in after a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Group hug!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Group hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

...Okay that's enough of that. He clears his throat, trying to disentangle himself. "So, how long should it take us to get to the point where we can attune ourselves to the vault?"

Permalink Mark Unread

(Jamie will graciously allow him to leave, but he's staying, so there.)

Permalink Mark Unread

One or two weeks? Depending on how much they want to dedicate themselves to it. They can attune themselves to the vault by that timeline and maybe draw a gift from it if they are so inclined.

Permalink Mark Unread

They should make their way back before the flight wears off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh right! They can fly back then!

Permalink Mark Unread

(Draw a gift? What does that mean, exactly?)

Permalink Mark Unread

The vault can store gifts if you give them up, and it's pretty unique in its ability to do so. Most of their gifts are taken from the vault, actually. Downside that the monsters draw gifts from that pool. Topher choose a memory manipulation power for himself because he didn't want to have it used against them.

Up, up and away!

Permalink Mark Unread

Um! Well, that's horrifying. He's glad Topher has it rather than leaving it for the monsters, though! (Alex agrees with both sentiments.)

Only one at a time? Do they take up one of the spots where they'd otherwise have awakened their own gift, or are they in addition?

Permalink Mark Unread

Multiple gifts at a time, but it takes the place. They would need to put whatever gift was in that lifeforce aspect slot (if any) and then draw a new one.

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds... They must be outrageously versatile compared to anyone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are! It even lets them have access to the higher Health and Youth gifts that people usually take years to acquire if they acquire at all. It's great.

Permalink Mark Unread

Health and Youth gifts take longer? Do you have to go in order or something? (He glances at Jamie) Assuming you do it the usual way, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

They take longer, yeah. You don't have to go in order, but the higher ones are harder so it's usually more efficient to go in order. Plenty of people skip wakefulness, though. Gifts tend to be sensory or mental and often stuff that causes government to want to keep an eye on you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do you have to register your gifts with the government or something?

Permalink Mark Unread

Varies per government, though mind-affecting gifts are universally monitored.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably a good policy.

And no one tries to get around it by just not registering it when they get a mind-effecting gift? Or are there ways to tell when someone has one?

Permalink Mark Unread

There are ways to tell if a person has gifts, with levels of detail including "affects minds" if someone cares to. The security they went through in the portal warehouses had those, much of each was subtle enough that they wouldn't even have noticed.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good to hear. So long as the government is actually doing its job, there.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is always controversy about that, but that's politics and Temple is far less interested in it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh, politics. They're of like minds there, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now, they are arriving home. Do they want to do some sparring now?

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex is up for some sparring, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie is up for watching some sparring. He is very up for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They call Sawney, who insists that Alexei should change to something more suitable for sparring training first and asks any training if any he has. But then they are clear to take the padded area in their gym.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can change if they have something he can use? He didn't exactly pack with sparring in mind.

He has no formal training, or none he really remembers. He thinks someone might have taught him some basics when he was very little? He's mostly made do with instinct, observation, tricks various people have taught him, and anything he could work out for himself, from instructions or from trial and error. He's sure he has all sorts of bad habits, and probably isn't much of a match for someone formally trained who took it seriously, but he's better than most people.

(He knows this, but he's going to have to keep reminding himself of it, probably. Getting angry about losing fights isn't going to help anything, but emotional reactions are not entirely under his control.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(They can lend him some clothes.)

Aaron (and also Sawney) have similar advantages and formal training.

Aaron is also really good at making a smug in his face when he knocks Alexei down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't let him get on your nerves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easier said than done," he snaps back, glaring at Aaron.

He manages to stay calm the first few times, getting up and going back at it, but after a few more he starts losing his temper. This doesn't exactly make him sloppy. He's still focused and paying attention - he gets a bit of tunnel vision, actually. It does makes him more reckless - he starts taking higher risks, getting more hits in, but also getting knocked down more. He doesn't use the same trick in the same way twice, so he's surprising, if nothing else. He's also learning - even while pissed, it only takes a few repetitions before he starts trying out moves Aaron has been using on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Jamie leans against the gym wall, watching Aaron beat up his brother with heated eyes. It's nice to be able to relax while Alex fights, for once. Gives him an excellent view as he gets more and more incensed. Jamie is of the opinion that 'pissed off' is one of Alex's best looks.)

(That smug look is pretty hot, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaron is having fun and grinning, which does not make him look any less smug. He starts baiting Alex, trying to leave obvious openings just to see if they are exploited. Often, they are traps, sometimes they don't work.

But this is so fun. "You're a natural."

Permalink Mark Unread

He might have taken that as a compliment if the ass didn't look so damn smug about it.

He takes the bait at first, but after that ends badly for him a few times he starts paying closer attention, doing his best to ignore the more obvious traps. He still falls for some, but the rate drops remarkably quickly. Engaging his mind like this also helps him calm down, a bit, drawing his attention away from Aaron's taunting expression.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Aw. But focus looks good on Alex, too. There's a whole world of good Alex looks, in Jamie's opinion.)

('Bruised' is another one of them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, it's nice to see someone who can adapt to circumstances.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door behind James opens. "Oh, nice, sweaty Aaron all over some poor kid half his size."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A 'hello', it's not hard to start conversations with just a 'hello.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, it's great, isn't it?" Jamie responds, turning to grin at the newcomers, his eyes leaving the spectacle reluctantly. "And, hello!" He adds to the second speaker, laughing a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, hey, Gabe! Bringing in the colorful commentary as usual." Aaron says, dodging what Alexei might have thought was an opening. "Hey, Henry!" Apparently he doesn't think this is stop fighting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sight to sore eyes." Gabe comments to no one in particular, he then blinks at James, and then looks back between him and Alexei, maybe realizing that they are twins. "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello!" He says stepping forward and offering a hand to shake. "Henry Oswald, one of the distant cousins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello!" he directs at Gabe, grin growing as he recognizes that double-take. He has a lot of experience with noticing that particular double take. He takes Henry's hand, switching his gaze to him, "Jamie Starr, another of the distant cousins! The one getting beat up over there is my twin brother, Alex."

Permalink Mark Unread

Damn it- he backpedals at the dodge to avoid a retaliating strike, stepping aside to come at Aaron from a new angle.

(Of course it isn't a reason to stop fighting, they're in the middle of something here.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Alexei has excellent priorities.

And that was a really nice angle he chose. Aaron is forced to barely avoid the incoming strike. Of course, that's still avoiding the strike.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, you two." Sawney says coming closer. "Gabe, James also happens to be artistically inclined."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, nice." Gabe says, distracted by the sparing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fuck's sake-" he doesn't try to change angles again, instead following after Aaron and attempting to catch him with a leg sweep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure is," he agrees, eyes going back to the scene in the middle of the room, "Oh, you're an artist too?" He asks belatedly, following Alex with his gaze. "What do you do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Drawing, I don't really have much chance on trying much else, but lately I discover how to sculpt stuff with magic and did some really neat Filigree, which is fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He has a weird dislike for painting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"oh, cool! I might have to try magic sculpting at this point, once I've learned enough to do it - you don't like painting? Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing against paint. It hasn't been long since I got serious about art as a hobby and mostly I would just draw with what I had in hand. So I never had much chance to practice and it gets everywhere instead of just going where you put it and it's a pain to fix mistakes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the way it gets everywhere is part of the charm, myself. And if I make a mistake-" he shrugs. "I work with it. I've made some pretty cool stuff out of a rogue spot of paint. Sure it's not true to life at that point, but a touch of the surreal doesn't hurt anyone."

"It does take some practice, though. And my gift does give me a bit of an advantage. If I'm trying to do something specific, a portrait or something, I can keep a tighter hold on the paint, stop it from going anywhere I don't want it to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He controls fluids," Sawney explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I mostly use it for flight, but it's handy for all sorts of other things, too. It's not very good at flight," he adds, "But we didn't know about any other magic until Temple and Felix showed up - well, I had my breath gift, but it's not useful for much, and I don't like using it, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ventriloquism or something, right? Anyway, we are treating his overuse of his health gift, so no worries there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet Morgan is being himself at you," Henry tells James looking away from the sparring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sort of, yeah," he answers Sawney distractedly, gaze still on the sparring pair. "It let's me talk to anyone I can see, without anyone else hearing. And Morgan's mostly just been feeding me a lot? I don't mind it. He's a good cook!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he made a bad first impression on you guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to me," Gabe comments, he is watching James watching the sparring. "Don't you wish it was in there being beaten up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gabe!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry about offending any delicate sensibilities over here," he tells Henry with a laugh, glancing at him briefly.

"It'd be fun," he adds to Gabe, "But I like watching, too. Usually I get to watch Alex clean house, but this is great," he smirks, watching Alex snarl when Aaron dodges yet another hit. "He's so pissed."

It's a real shame they've got such an audience around here, they probably won't be able to retreat somewhere private enough that Jamie can help Alex calm down after the fight's over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you like to watch your brother beat up guys? Relatable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like watching people fight in general, but Lex more than most. He loves fighting, and I love watching people do what they love. Passion and strength like that is-" hot, he almost says, and there's a slight pause as he corrects himself- "Inspiring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sure is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean... yes. But, I feel like I am agreeing more with James' meaning than Gabe's."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wise decision. Is Aaron cheating?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie thinks he and Gabe probably mean roughly the same thing, even if he's being less blatant about it.

He blinks, "I dunno, is he?" He looks harder at Aaron.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not using my gifts. That sounds decidedly unfair." Aaron says, dodging an attack. "I am still warded," back-flip, "but we are not actually hurting each other too much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie laughs, "You just did a back-flip," he points out, "I think we've sailed right past 'unfair' at this point."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex pauses a few arms-lengths away to glare at him, "Okay, now you're just showing off," he gets out between harsh breaths. He's actually smiling a bit, too, though. This is fun, even if it's also infuriating. He's learning a lot, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, I am showing off. Pause? Catch your breath. Let's say 'hi' to our cousins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right," he agrees reluctantly, brushing his sweaty hair back from his forehead with a sigh. He turns, eyes lingering on Jamie for a moment before sweeping across the other three watchers.

"...Hi," he greets, looking between the two new arrivals. "Henry and Gabe, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, sorry if the Gabe's colorful commentary was distracting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't really notice it," he admits. "What kind of commentary?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We were talking about how much I like watching you fight," Jamie informs him. "There might also have been some admiring of Aaron's face," he adds, "Though maybe that was just me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was absolutely not. Though, I was not constraining myself to the face."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh, really?" Aaron says in a false earnest tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really, Aaron. As a not-quite-in-law, I say that entirely in a platonic admiration of the human form kind of way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I wasn't constraining myself either, the face was just extra nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aren't you the straight one," Alex asks Aaron.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I can take a compliment, better than I can take you down even. Honestly, I am bit sad that Henry didn't say anything." He pouts at Henry.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You - like this entire family - is ridiculously good looking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex twitches a bit at the second part of that answer, conscientiously stepping away from that concentrated smugness and going to stand next to Jamie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie leans on him. "It's pretty ridiculous," he agrees. "You're straight?" He directs at Aaron. He shakes his head, expression woeful, "Well that's just tragic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sorry that god made me this way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We forgive you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a great injustice, but I'm sure we'll recover from it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you two sure? I for one, don't think this crime can be easily forgiven." He is barely not cracking up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex snorts, nodding in mock-agreement, "Does this 'God' character have a comment box? We should take up the issue with them. Maybe get them to make a few last-minute adjustments to their designs."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie mimes writing in the air. "'Dear God. Everyone who is straight should instead be not-that.'" He pauses, tapping his lips with the imaginary pen, "'Also, while you're revising, could I get a pair of wings?'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, and give Henry a long-lost twin. That would be hot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why stop there? Singlets are really missing out. Just give everyone a long-lost twin. Including twins! Make us quadruplets! The world could definitely do with double this face."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Not to mention your extremely humble genes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pff, humility, who needs it. It's a pretty, pretty face, and I know it. Can hardly miss it with a handy mirror image around all the time." He slings an arm around Alex, tugging him into a side-hug. Alex is forced to grab onto him in return so they don't fall over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, Narcissus. Anyway, what are today's plan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should head back home to settle things there later today. We only packed with staying one night in mind. Before we have to leave, though-" he shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing specific really. Sparring, and... Oh! I was gonna show you my sketchbook," he reminds Sawney. "I left it in the kitchen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, I want to see it too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think it's going to take a while to uproot your life there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really. We've only been there for a few months. It might take us a week, maybe. I need to quit my job, we need to settle things with the landlord, pack up the apartment, maybe rent a storage unit." He looks over at Aaron, "We'll need to work out how we're getting all the things we want to bring with us here. I'm guessing we should talk to your dad about that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie beams at Gabe, "I'd be happy to show you!" He un-leans, glancing at Alex, who waves him off. To the kitchen?

Permalink Mark Unread

To the kitchen! Morgan is not there but his presence can be felt in their hearts and in the pile of snacks left on the table, next to the sketchbook.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'your dad'? Stephen is not my dad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He was looking at me, and yeah. I am sure we will work something out. No worries."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh, I wonder what we could do to get to call him 'daddy'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dude, gross."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex nods, snorting at the byplay, "Yeah, I meant Aaron's dad," he confirms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snacks! Jamie will eat some of this thoughtfully provided deliciousness. Nom.

"That daddy stuff always seemed a little weird to me," he muses once he's swalled his first bite. He shrugs - food in hand (and mouth), he flips open the sketchbook in his unoccupied one, handing it over to Sawney.

There's a lot of Alex in this book: Alex, playing guitar; Alex, in profile, glaring at someone; Alex, smiling up at the viewer; Alex, face downcast, dark feathered wings spreading out behind his back, and a halo of light behind his head; Alex, bruised and bloody and baring his teeth. None of the sketches of Alex are nude, though he's often shirtless.

There's other people, too, of course - a woman painstakingly sewing a patchwork quilt; a man laughing, his head thrown back and eyes squinting with mirth; a little boy, caught in the act of leaping from one hopscotch square to the next; a group of teenagers mock-fighting each other with sticks, faces bright with exhilaration; an unknown man, his naked form silhouetted against the floor-to-ceiling window in front of him, his posture thoughtful as he leans against the glass.

There's scenery, as well, interestingly twisted trees and old, abandoned buildings; a stand of coral attended by dozens of tiny fish; the moon, both in the sky and reflected off an ice rink below.

Some other things are scattered throughout, here and there - a cat on a fence, its shadow taking the form of a man; a spider sitting in a web made out of hundreds of tiny, near-illegible words; a puddle with a fantastical city-scape within it; a woman's face, mostly indistinct, but with galaxies in her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe has commentary to offer, mostly positive commentary. He seems to particularly appreciate his ability to catch facial expressions, something he himself struggles with.

(People start grabbing snacks.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Facial expressions are my favourite part. It took a long time to get to the point where I mostly get them right, but I think I maybe focused more on them than a lot of people do," he tells Gabe. "I don't have much of the stuff I did before we, uh, left home, but I used to fill books with just facial expressions. Classmates, random people on the street, Alex, various people we knew..." he shrugs. He also grabs another snack, because they are delicious. As a side benefit, eating more snacks will, presumably, make Morgan happy with him, and he has no reason not to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Meanwhile, Gabe took his time learning how to draw dicks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sorry for admiring the human form!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles, "I'm not bad at that, either. None of that in this sketchbook, though. I left those ones at home."

(Alex gives him a look. Jamie grins at him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww," pout. He says still looking at the sketchbook. "Maybe we can get some good sketches before you have to go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oo, I do you guys, you do us?" He asks, cackling internally at the double meaning. He gives the both of them a long look, half-assessing, half-admiring. "I wouldn't say no to a few hours of staring at you two. What do you think, Lex? Wanna give Gabe some practice at expressions? We make such different ones, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sure," he snorts. "Anything for the art."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Art is great. Do you mind if I ask Henry and Franklyn to join us? For artistic purposes that is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie glances at Alex, who offers a shrug. He grins at Gabe, "Not at all! I was thinking of asking Franklyn to model for me, I didn't get near enough time yesterday to get enough details for a really true-to-life sketch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But presumably, you got some details. Because it is Franklyn who we are talking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, I got lots of details. But it never hurts to get another look!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The curse of having a too good-looking family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, it's a great burden," he agrees, smirking at Alex.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lay off on the narcissism a bit, Jay," Alex tells him, rolling his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, you're no fun." He tilts a look at Aaron, "You gonna come along too?" He asks, laughingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, but I think I will pass. But have fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure we'll all do our very best!"

Is Franklyn around somewhere? They still need invite him to their definitely just a modeling and drawing party, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn is here. He would love to be a model. His room is also a convenient location for that. The place is identical in layout to the one they slept in, but mirrored and there is a balcony area with green covered walls and a hammock.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oo a hammock! Jamie is distracted from all other considerations by the desire to go try out that hammock immediately. He'll pull Franklyn along too, if he's amenable to that. Also, he'll lose the shirt, he's feeling a little overdressed in this company.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex watches him beeline for the balcony with a half-smile on his face, then glances over at the others, "I actually kind of want a shower?" He offers. "Though I guess you're welcome to draw me in the shower, if you want," he adds to Gabe. Pause. "Or just join me in the shower." He raises a brow at Henry, including him in this offer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Franklyn definitely shrugs off his clothing before getting into the hammock. Snuggle?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, we did just got here after a long journey. We absolutely should take a shower. Entirely for hygiene reasons, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he wouldn't want to make things uneven here! He also pulls off the rest of his clothes. And then, yes, snuggle. Jamie will stretch out on top of Franklyn like a cat. Being small compared to someone is weird but nice - Jamie is 6', he's not enormous, but most people are shorter than he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," he agrees, straight-faced. The bathroom must be this door over here, right? In he goes, and off come his borrowed exercise clothes.

He's not built, not like, for example, Gabe, but he does look like the kind of person who does manual labour eight hours a day, six days a week. He's also scarred, here and there. A burn mark on his hip, the remains of a slash on his right bicep, and a few others.

If they were watching when Jamie undressed outside, they might also notice they have more similarities than just their faces. And that, just maybe, Jamie has the right to some narcissism.

Once he's undressed, he offers them a small smile, and then steps into the shower, fiddling with the taps until the water pours out at a nice temperature.

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry and Gabe help each other undress.  Henry is much leaner than Gabe, the fitter side of lean and also has right to some narcissism.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gabe pulls a momentary narcissus by actually being distracted by his own reflection. Not without reason. They get into the stall.

Permalink Mark Unread

So much narcissism in this shower stall. It's a good thing the water isn't still enough for them to get lost in their own reflections. Of course, there's other distractions to be had, as well.

They experience some setbacks along the way to getting clean. They do get there eventually, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't mind the long way there.

Permalink Mark Unread

They do say the important part is the journey, not the destination. And, of course, the friends you make along the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Really great friends with benefits. Which also include back massages in the shower, if Alexei is up for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alexei is absolutely up for that, yeah. (Probably not up from it, though, not so soon.) He's also a decent masseuse himself, so he can return the favour. He could even do that on the bed just outside, actually - it's not as though either of the people out there will have a problem with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awesome! They can have a very relaxing time all around.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll find Jamie stretched out on the bed next to Sawney when they exit the bathroom, the latter having joined him and Franklyn while the other three were in the shower. He's got his sketchpad out in front of him, working on a sketch of Franklyn in the hammock on the balcony - since that was supposedly what they were going to do up here. His gaze switches away from his subject when the door opens, pencil pausing as he ogles all three of them appreciatively.

"Have fun?" He asks, shifting a bit closer to Sawney to leave room for them on the bed if they want to join them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed, lots. How about you two?" He climbs on the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "I can imagine you did."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex smirks, "Fun was definitely had," he agrees. He nods at Sawney in greeting, and then leans over the bed to focus his attention on Henry's back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, plenty! Sawney showing up only made it moreso!" He grins back at him, and then up at Gabe, "You gonna draw something, now? You must have all sorts of inspiration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find myself very inspired, true." To Sawney he asks. "Where did you go again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ask Topher if he was interested, he decided not to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's missing out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Not everyone appreciates art as much as Gabe does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be a challenge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of art, may I see your sketch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not quite done, but sure," he agrees, turning the sketchpad to show him.

The sketch depicts Franklyn lounging in the hammock, smiling up at the viewer, light dappling his body where it streams in through the plantlife on the balcony. It looks like he's just finishing up, sketching out the hammock and some plants trailing down beneath it, along with the outlines of a few birds perched on the ropes above Franklyn's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very nice." He pulls his own sketch book. "And how about you Sawney?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sawney's sketch is of James drawing Franklyn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now Gabe should do one of you and then we can close the circle with James making one of Gabe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sketchception," James agrees, "Sounds fun, actually. But Sawney will have to draw Henry and Alex, then. We can't let your participation go unremembered!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, sure. I am used to being artistically appreciated." He looks at Alex. "I guess I am not the only one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't blame James for artistically appreciating you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty used to it, yeah," he snorts, the innuendo flying right over his head. "If you thought there were a lot of sketches of me in that book, you should see the many others he has back home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What kind of person would I be if I didn't appreciate beauty where I found it?" Jamie asks, a hand over his heart, "It's hardly my fault if the most beautiful thing in the room is usually my twin, and if he happens to be around a lot for me to appreciate..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sure that if I had a twin I would appreciate him a lot. Every day. And hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

Both Alex and Jamie pause in their current activities, sharing a look, and then Alex goes back to what he was doing. He's trying for a blank expression, but some of the strain is leaking through.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jamie mostly just looks curious, with a hint of something calculating underneath, "I figure most people would think it was weird to appreciate your twin to that extent," he says, "Or maybe they'd call it 'wrong'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh, have we mentioned that we are raised pretty much like brothers despite being cousins? I doubt that would bother Gabe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything that bothers Gabe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People being prudes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smirks, but continues on that line of thought a bit more, "Would it bother anyone else around here?" He wonders.

(It had to come out at some point. Really, it's better make sure it's actually going to be okay now, before they get too attached.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blink. "I am not a hypocrite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, are you serious? You do you-2."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Far from me to... I am not sure what I would be doing in this scenario, actually. Or not doing. Is this serious?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins at Franklyn's words, and then nods, "That's great! Cause I'm serious, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex looks up at this point, "You four are the only people in the world - worlds - who definitely know about this, now," he notes. "We usually play it safer than this. But we're going to be living in pretty close quarters here for a few months at least, so it would come out eventually. Better it happen before we've packed everything up and moved in, really." Despite his words, he still looks a bit like he's bracing for some sort of... delayed negative reaction.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, man. That sounds tough." He changes position so he can hug them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

-okay, hug then.

"...Thanks," he says quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"I mean, it's illegal in most states," he tells Sawney. "Anywhere from a few months to life imprisonment. Though it's sort of ambiguous whether it counts when we're both male, in some of them," he adds, thoughtfully. "No idea what the law is in the other worlds, but people are weirdly concerned about incest, even when no one's having kids."

"You looked that up?" Alex asks, bemused.

"Sure I did!" Jamie grins, "Gotta know what the laws are to really stick it to them, you know." Also, he wanted to know what he was risking. Not that knowing changed his choice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, I am technically not a legal resident of the united states." Sawney shrugs. "And I can see that most people would have a problem, but I am not one of those. I don't think anyone else will give you a hard time about it? Stephen won't, the other twins might be uncomfortable about it? Adam might complain if people in his school find out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Life in prison, really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most cases are not like ours, it usually involves... unbalanced power dynamics." To not use other terms. "And legally, cousins are less covered."

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex pulls away from Franklyn to settle on the end of the bed next to Jamie, shrugging, "We're not going to be very demonstrative about it," he tells Sawney, "They don't need to think about it if they don't want to, and Adam's school will only find out if something goes really wrong. We just... didn't want to be kicked out a month in because someone walked in on us or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on the state," Jamie tells Henry, "But usually, yeah." He hums, "I figure an actual good law would just fold it into 'don't have sex with kids' and 'don't rape people'. The rest of it isn't really something it makes sense to try to control like that. I mean... it's not like you have to be related to have unhealthy power dynamics in a relationship." He goes quiet for a moment, turning his attention to fiddling with his pencil.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alex takes the pencil and squeezes his hand, nodding in agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one is going to kick you out over it. No. I am sorry that you were worried."

Permalink Mark Unread

Henry does not add further comments.

Permalink Mark Unread

He offers Franklyn a smile, "You don't need to feel sorry," he tells him, "But thanks."

Now that that's dealt with... back to art?

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to art!

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to art!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, though, the sketching party ends, and it's time for the two of them to grab their stuff and say their goodbyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone gathers to wish them a safe journey and a safe return. Even the ones that will depart soon enough, in the opposite direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

They exchange contact information and Stephen asks them to call if there is anything they can do to smooth things over.

Permalink Mark Unread

They should be fine! They appreciate the offer, though.

"See you all in a few days," Jamie says, waving, as they climb into the car.
