the song that goes like this
Lorica (post 'ward of the state') in the esperverse meets a Lucien and a Lia
Permalink Mark Unread

Nikki pulled again at her arm, trying to pull her arm away from the rough sandstone grasp of the hulking rock monster. She screamed too - mostly from the pain in her broken arm but also because she thought that she could hear sirens already, and someone who could rescue her couldn't be far behind they had to be here soon and she'd be fine and someone would fix her arm and it would turn into one of those stories you could at a party about how you'd been kidnapped but espers had saved you and everyone would sit around and nod beca-fuck ow god those stories never had the sound of your bones breaking as the monster dragging you toward a dungeon readjusted it's grip.

But she had time, and she could keep pulling, and until she was in the dungeon there was a chance someone would hear her screaming and she'd get medical attention before the blood dripping from her broken arm became a serious medical problem and and.

That hole in the fabric of reality wasn't there when she last climbed these stairs. What if she just, throws herself down at this angle maybe its grip will- nope ow that was really bad and definitely didn't work and why can't she just be anywhere other than here other than trapped and heading into the dungeon, anywhere...

Permalink Mark Unread

- what the fuck, ow, ow, ow -

Permalink Mark Unread

It is sort of hard to orient yourself when the lighting, temperature, and humidity change a second after you show up at a place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are they going to keep doing that?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope! It's settled down on a dimly lit corridor of a sandstone cavern, carved in a way that makes it seem natural rather than man-made. As for her - her arm is broken, bleeding, held in the grip of a sandstone creature of some sort, and the wrong color but not any of the ones you'd expect her broken arm to be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, so - Leviathan, then discontinuity in her memories followed by some Master sending golems after her and... she has no explanation for her arm being brown. Is the golem otherwise stopping her from moving beyond holding her arm?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope, just steadily moving forward and dragging her by said arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will try to keep up - oh, heck, her implants aren't working. Or have never been here? Since she's... not herself? She will try to keep up anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

The floor isn't exactly smooth but it's definitely better than not trying to keep up at all.

Eventually there is a brighter light coming up ahead, and she can see... what might be an exit? Except there's another wall in the distance from the exit. As they get closer it becomes clear that the exit leads directly into an extremely deep ravine of some kind, sandstone cliffs - dotted with similar exits - on either side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, this is a shitty place to be a software tinker.

...

Wait a second, is she... a...

Wow, this is a shitty place to not even be a software Tinker.

Permalink Mark Unread

The golem thrusts her out of the exit, still holding her hand, and she dangles over the edge of the gaping chasm for a moment before it angles it's arm to bring her up to a somewhat precarious ledge on the side of cliff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, okay, she's going, she's going!

Permalink Mark Unread

It leaves her there, with what would ordinarily be a reasonable pretty view of the other side of the sandstone ravine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is there anything obviously to be done about her arm? Can she take off her shirt and wrap it up maybe?

Permalink Mark Unread

That will in fact help with the bleeding and keep it from being painfully jostled quite as easily.

Eventually other people are dragged to other ledges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do any of them look like they might be in a condition to talk to her?

Also is there anything in her pockets?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, most of them seem to be less injured than her! The woman to the side of her only looks a bit disheveled.

She has a pack of strawberry bubblegum, a wallet, and a pair of keys.

The wallet contains Nikki Carter's driver license.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know what's going on here?" Lorica asks her neighbor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly what it looks like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I might have hit my head or something, I'm really confused."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've been kidnapped into a dungeon - I don't know if this one has showed up before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A - dungeon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow, what is it you are supposed to do for a possibly concussed person again?

"Do you know what year it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not, uh, confidently."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that isn't a great sign.

"Want to guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...2004?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow that is so far off.

"Uh, I think you are definitely concussed? I am not sure how to help with that from over here. Maybe you should lie down or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, okay, I will lie down," with the bad arm facing up, "but could you maybe explain more about dungeons and it not being 2004, I don't obviously have ongoing short term memory problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're off by about three decades and dungeons are the pocket dimensions that kidnap people until espers or the military rescue them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I know what a military is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pocket dimensions are places that exist outside of normal space, I think? Espers are the people with powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. For... some reason... I thought those were called 'capes'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that wouldn't be the weirdest name but no, they're espers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. How long do we wait for espers or the military to come save us, about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This one seems rougher, so hopefully only an hour or two?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...okay."

Waiting, waiting, waiting. Does she still have a power at all -

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, did she previously feel like she could push herself along an axis entirely distinct from the three typical spatial ones?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, she previously felt like maybe she could make a robot do that, but since she doesn't have any robots here -

- push?

Permalink Mark Unread

She pushes not up, but something else entirely, and then she is floating in a dark void with an almost complete absence of sensory input of any kind, except for the feeling of being able to push.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaaaah back whence she came??

Permalink Mark Unread

A push in the opposite direction and she's back! Her neighbor evidently too engrossed with a phone game to notice Lorica was gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she... go the other direction? Since she doesn't seem to have suffocated or anything in her excursion?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep! This time instead of a void she gets a sidewalk outside an apartment building! It's a bit chilly and drizzly and there's a cluster of what might be police officers along with multiple ambulances.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excuse me, officer, I'm very lost and confused, I might have hit my head."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're setting up for dungeon rescues but I suppose we won't get the first for at least a few minutes," she can be sent over to a medic.

Permalink Mark Unread

...yeah she does also need a medic, this arm is pretty fucked up.

Permalink Mark Unread

The medic can start getting her arm into a splint.

"You said you might have hit your head as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My head doesn't hurt but also last I remember knowing what was going on it was 2004 and dungeons weren't a thing, so, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

The medic can do concussion checks that are more accurate than just asking if she can remember things.

"Well, I don't think you're concussed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that's sort of a relief and also sort of more worrying than thinking I just hit my head. I... was in the dungeon? But I got out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I still wouldn't expect that to result in memory loss. I can ask about resources for you and get back to you once the dungeon's been cleared?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also I remember being white and the name in the wallet in the pocket is not the one I expected to have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Maybe you should stand around in case you show other symptoms regardless of whether you want whatever resources I can find."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

And here come two masked espers! This one is recognizable if you happen to be the sort of person who recognizes espers.

"Okay don't worry I won't ask anyone to buddy with you unless there's someone who's obviously fre-oh hi! You look free - I'm Venture and this is Turnaround are you up for keeping him company while he helps save people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Every time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, sure, especially if that can double as him explaining things about the world that I mysteriously don't know for some reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh huh, uh, yeah that would work. Though if you want to talk to someone else about that instead I'll be fine."

He's really not that backlashed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh wow she's pretty, Lia thinks on Lucien's behalf.

"Ignore him - you sound perfect. See you later!" And she grabs Lucien's hand one last time for a re-up and she is off at a jog towards the dungeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really have anyone else to talk to besides these medics who should probably be focusing on injuries and stuff. Uh, last I remember before being in the dungeon, I was in Brockton Bay during a Leviathan attack, and also I was white and had a name that doesn't match the one on the ID in my pocket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-"

... Is she playing a practical joke on him? ... No that is probably the backlash he doesn't have much of talking.

"-I've never heard of Brockton Bay or Leviathan, what part of the world were you in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...eastern seaboard, United States. Not having heard of Leviathan is much much weirder than not having heard of Brockton Bay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm from the northeast and havn't heard of it - we're in Philly right now. Is Leviathan a dungeon or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, big speedster hyrdrokinesis monster. I'm, uh, considering the possibility that he killed me and I have somehow reincarnated into some poor random person's body."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This doesn't sound like any backlash I can think of but is it possible you're awakening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what that is. Is it an esper thing? We called people with powers 'parahumans' - or 'capes', especially if they do the cops and robbers thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, yeah it's an esper thing. Backlash is the negative effect an esper gets when they use their powers, awakening is the week where you get a ton of backlash and you get powers afterwards. Delusions aren't that uncommon of a symptom for backlash though yours do seem obviously specific."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... do also have a power. But it is not the one I had before so I don't know how it works very well yet. It got me out of the dungeon though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Huh, in that case you wouldn't be awakening since powers don't manifest before that's over but you could have some sort of backlash from power use. If it's okay for me to poke you I can check for whether you are an esper which should narrow it down some?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sure." She holds out her good arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poke.

"Well, you're not an esper."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was a cape before but I was a Tinker, the kind that does custom technology stuff. I can't - think about any of the stuff I built in a Tinkery way any more. Instead I have some kind of, I don't know, phasing power or something? I pushed on it and it put me in some nowhere place which at least didn't suffocate me, and I pulled on it and it took me back to the dungeon, and then I pulled again and I landed right over - there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh! Do you know what your backlash is - if your type of power has backlash I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Capes don't. - well, Thinkers get headaches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you a Thinker?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a low-rating passive Thinker or Trump power - you could classify it as either. Nothing that gave me a headache. I don't know if I still have that; it made me immune to certain Master and Stranger effects but for all I know it wouldn't work on espers even if I still had it in its original form and you had one I'd be comfortable testing it with to hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you don't get backlash from doing it and wanted to phase again I can check to see if you actually have powers without being an esper rather than you having some sort of um - delusional disorder?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sure. I'm... at all worried I could push back into the dungeon, I'll do the pull direction -" Pull.

Permalink Mark Unread

The void is still empty of all things except for Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she's back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you definitely just disappeared, which eliminates any option I can think of except you actually being from another universe and having reincarnated into someone else's body."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Can someone... tell her family... somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I can ask one of the response coordinators to make sure that happens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It says Nikki Carter." She fishes out the wallet again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien nods.

"I can pass that on, possibly someone will want to come by and confirm you have her wallet and get you to confirm that you are not in fact her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Is this a thing that is known to happen here, somehow, or am I going to maybe have to deal with her family not believing me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is not known to happen though I am not sure anyone will force you to speak to the family?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I would if it'd help but if they'd just be freaking out the entire time that doesn't seem constructive. ...can't decide whether to go by my cape name or my normal name here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems possible you'll be afforded more latitude in not interacting with Nikki's civilian life if you positioned yourself as similar to an esper?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. In that case hi, I'm Lorica."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Turnaround," says the masked esper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does your power do exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Basically I can pull people towards me while keeping them safe along the way, it's really useful for rescuing people from dungeons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds it. How do you find them to do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tag people I touch and also the people who are touched by the people I've tagged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you... tag your friend and then she goes around poking everybody?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, and hopefully killing the dungeon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And this made her want to assign you to someone to talk to because..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have backlash that makes me think everything is about me and this is a bigger issue if the only thing I have to focus on is bringing injured people back from inside the dungeon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, okay. It's not a problem that I am an injured person who was in the dungeon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is less of a problem because I didn't get you, also I'm less backlashed right now than I will be by the time this is over and so I can get myself thoroughly convinced that I am not somehow responsible for breaking your arm and snatching you from another dimension and putting you in this body. Which is also helpfully implausibly my fault. I might still assume comments you make are about me when they aren't, sorry about that in advance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there... a helpful way to phrase things or anything that I should know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you seem annoyed or sad and it's not clear to me its not my fault I will either have to risk being inconsiderate about having offended you or risk trying to address something completely unrelated to me. I have mostly come down on the side of being inconsiderate because I kept track of what I said sorry for for a bit and I was approximately wrong 92% of the time. So uh, if you are in the 8% don't expect an apology? Also don't blame me for major world problems even jokingly, I know you probably weren't going to but it can be very bad if you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, I possibly might have, I'm very sarcastic, I'll keep a lid on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. Did you have more questions about things you wanted answered?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, what're my options for short term - food shelter internet all that good stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...don't actually know if you fit into any of the obvious categories of someone who could get support from the government beyond like, homeless shelters. I'd be willing to spot you a month or two of support if you are willing to trade talking about your world and powers for it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds more than fair to me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a guest room if that works?" Lia can sleep in his bed or a couch when she visits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the meantime uh, if you more questions I am happy to answer them or you can talk about how inventing worked as a power since that seems like it would be extremely cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It waaaas, I already miss my robot. I had one main software project, its name was Rete. It handled my email, when I had my helmet on and people couldn't see me it'd even talk to them for me with my voice so I didn't have to deal with annoying PR stuff, it managed a lot of little scout drones for me in the field. Tinkers all have specialties and mine was approximately software that makes its own decisions. It made it hard to be around, like, a normal microwave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because you'd want the microwave to make decisions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, like, if it had a popcorn button I would have intrusive thoughts about how it ought to be able to figure out whether you'd put popcorn in it or not and use that information."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of things do you enable to make decisions aside from Rete?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly just Rete, I built it a ton of peripherals and focused on the one software. I had a super-suit and so did my dad, he's also a cape."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was this a common sort of power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tinkers? There's plenty of Tinkers but different ones are all specialized differently, you get ones who make exotic ceramics or weird bombs or pharma stuff or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has that impacted the world economy a bunch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, less than you most think because Tinker stuff resists mass-production, it breaks down without the same Tinker or one with a closely related specialization managing it. I was planning to make oodles of money because my power lent itself really well to bending that pattern, Rete would be able to maintain a lot of simpler stuff for me including, I hoped, some of its own robots, as long as I maintained the maintainers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort of thing were you expecting to end up making money off of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Procedurally generated video games, patrol drones... it's sort of hard to remember my more complicated ideas because the power's gone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, that sounds really frustrating."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's a bummer, but at least I apparently do not die when killed, that's neat even if it's awful for Nikki. I hope she's not, like, in here and just can't talk to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I'm not sure how you'd tell? Which isn't great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I don't have my opacity power any more, or if she's not covered by it, maybe someone with a power that can detect people would be able to tell? I don't know anyone with a power like that off the top of my head."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know of anyone and even if there was someone I'd expect they might miss some possibilities - like her being unconscious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. ...what about powers that could get me to my universe? I guess I can't rule out that mine could, but I don't know if it's good for me to spend too much time in the weird void place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems plausible my power could pull you back if that's what your afraid of - I don't know of any powers that would obviously help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...probably this isn't a good time to try pulling me back because you're about to need to use your power a lot. Later though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's a good point." As his parents and Lia keep trying to get him to learn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"When does that start happening? I didn't get a good look at the route through the dungeon because I got out with my power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on how easy it is for Lia and the other espers to navigate and what they encounter on the way - she's tagged them but no one has tagged any kidnappees yet. I'm guessing another five to fifteen minutes before they start getting to people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, does it go more layers down, she tags the other espers and they can tag the kidnapped folks too? How many layers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wears off after a few hours from the original tag I did, more or less. No hard limit other than that - though additional tags do cost me a bit of backlash and pulling people costs me significantly more than that, but it's still relatively scalable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long's the backlash take to wear off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, I can pretty consistently clear it after an evening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that's about in line with Thinker headaches as far as I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would take longer if I allowed a substantial amount to build up, or less long if I had a more compatible partner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Compatible partner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Recovering from backlash requires contact with another esper who has compatible backlash which typically looks like the backlashes being opposites in some manner, though it can vary,"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And that's your friend who dropped you off here, but the compatibility isn't very quick?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you normally find a partner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can tell how compatible you are by touching - sometimes the government can recommend someone but other times you just have to shake hands when you meet new people until you get lucky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, that sounds like such an annoying process, especially if you also have to work together well on, like, a coworker basis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it can be for some people but Lia and I at least get along really well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, though not having any backlash at all sounds much nicer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm certainly accustomed to it. Some Thinkers might trade your thing for their migraines though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense - I don't have it that rough really, just have to be careful to not go overboard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happens if you do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, I tried to turn myself into the cops for causing nationwide airplane delays once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a really tough time convincing them that in aggregate the harm to hundreds of thousands of people was actually a really big deal!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not every big deal is criminally chargeable!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think mass sabotage of transit would be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess they'd figure something out had you actually featured."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which I did not. Thankfully - it would be so much worse if I wasn't able to reassure myself that I've been wrong every time I panicked about something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon enough it is time to start retrieving tagged people, keeping Lucien busy as he holds out his hand and translucent people speed towards him, coming to rest when they touch his hand and solidifying into normal existence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica falls silent, keeping alert for things she might need to do as his assigned buddy.

Permalink Mark Unread

People are forwarded to medics as needed - in between clusters of people Lucien asks Lorica for a different conversation topic than the previous one since mulling over the past disasters is rapidly becoming a bad idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, uh, how're we getting to your place after this is wrapped up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's government transport for espers - I'm sure they can accommodate an extra person. My place is a couple hours away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing I'm not especially prone to getting carsick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah - uh, don't worry I won't be driving or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does backlash make y- make it hard to drive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, I thought you were making a comment about my driving ability."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, it's just a long drive. - I guess it's possible that, uh, Nikki, gets carsick and now I will too, I don't know what I've picked up from her. Actually I don't even know what I look like besides 'brown'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to borrow my phone and look at a selfie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes please."

Permalink Mark Unread

Phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Selfie!

"Well, if I had to bodysnatch someone I guess it's at least nice for me that she was roughly my age and a she and nice-looking and whatnot."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien is going to smile slightly about this and try not to leak how hot he finds her! Not that he expects to succeed!

Permalink Mark Unread

"How often do these dungeon things pop up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are a few thousand each day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...wow, across - how big an area -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's everywhere. - you won't get more than a few per major city."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it always cities?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Population centers - rarely in a town but sometimes. Once on a cruise ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Because that's where there's people to - kidnap, for - what do they want us for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...what do they do with people if nobody rescues them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They vanish and the people aren't seen again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That largely doesn't happen but things can fall through the cracks, especially during confluences."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's... what it sounds like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If what it sounds like is a dramatic increase in dungeon appearances, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What makes those happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People aren't sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna guess that's also the case with dungeons themselves?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long has this been a thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Since the 70s. Uh, possibly we should switch subjects after this next batch I am starting to worry I am responsible for the sorry state of my world and that's never a good sign."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, sorry. Uh, read any good books lately?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien read a government handbook on setting up rapidly deployable dungeon resource harvesting teams in medium sized municipalities! It was great.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not what she'd pick for light reading but it seems to be keeping his mind off the world's woes.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's really cool actually! It's an incredibly difficult logistical problem with serious pay-offs for getting it right, and the handbook is aimed at areas that lack the population to make use of any teams at all consistently so it's about being sure you have the right people on call to mine superconducting materials if they show up in a dungeon, without having that be those people's full time job! Also the financing around this whole thing is fascinating.

Permalink Mark Unread

He must be so proud of himself. (She doesn't say that but she's really listening for the implication.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not imply that! It's obviously not him.

Until he does the next batch of tagged at which point he is totally implying that - he does think about this a lot after all. He does feel bad for not doing better - there was a long period where they didn't manage to harvest resources from anywhere outside of the biggest cities.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do most dungeons have good stuff in them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope, but the occasional important ones are a big deal, like the superconductors. That's why we set-up full time teams at the major cities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they need espers shepherding them in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes military personnel will suffice in place of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And is there intellectual property all over this or not so much because it's a discovery of a... natural-esque... thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It's so complicated! Mostly because different countries had different opinions on this and people also tried to patent all sorts of fairly straightforward applications and it's a mess but mostly it works out to the basics being public domain and various complicated dynamics to make that the case that amount to rewards for finding new stuff in practice but legally speaking are the result of lawsuits constantly being settled out of court. Turnaround thinks this system is a decent idea and other people disagree with him and think he should have gone with something simpler and.... he admits he is failing to do better but it's not all bad, you know?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's sure he's doing his very best.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know why she'd think that given the state of things but perhaps she should move on and talk about something else, such as uses for superconductors in transportation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, she would have been more competent to remark on this topic as a tinker but it's not uninteresting now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually the dungeon wraps up and Venture emerges, covered in sand but otherwise unharmed . She is wearing the mildly subdued smile of someone who knows it's not an appropriate time to bounce excitedly.

"Hi! Sorry for taking so long - the dungeon was a bit of a maze."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No skin off my nose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plan is for Lorica to come and at my place a bit - I was figuring we drop her off on the way to my silo,"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I can feel my bones and our silo is two hours away so I want to make out on the ride home, is that going to be awkward?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really care."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I. Um."

This would be so much easier if Lorica weren't really hot!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do care?"

Permalink Mark Unread

".... Yeah I think so."

"We can get you an Uber to my place if that works?" Lucien asks Lorica who he is certain is imagining him kissing Lia right now and it's a very uncomfortable certainty that is mayyybe downstream of backlash.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what that is but probably?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It is apparently a taxi they call with an app on their phone to give Lorica a ride.

Permalink Mark Unread

And that just works? Okay! What should she do if she gets there first? (Are the medics all done with her arm or does she need followup at a real clinic soon?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien can text his parents to unlock the door - they live across the street. He is going to be a couple of hours because he needs to go to his silo with Venture.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. She'll get in the uber once the medics release her with whatever followup instructions she needs about Nikki's her fucked up arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is evidently going to need a follow-up on that - though not urgently. The door is unlocked - Turnaround evidently has a rather nice two bedroom apartment. It is decorated in the style of someone who was trying to restrain their best friend from filling the place with soft and cozy objects with only mild success.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he... have any books.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Quite a lot of books - they are organized according to the Universal Decimal Classification system (with corresponding spine labels) and cover a wide enough range of topics to make this decision not completely indefensible.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute. She will pick out something about espers and sit on his couch and read one-handed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then after an hour and a half a refreshed looking Turnaround will walk through the door, having changed out of his costume and mask.

Permalink Mark Unread

Along with a beaming Lia, who has done the same.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lucien?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Valid of presumably his parents to share his name considering she's staying him.

"Hi! We were going to order dinner - does pizza work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yyyyes just - I recognize you, there's a you on Earth Bet."

Permalink Mark Unread

".... Did my parents not tell you my name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't even see them! I would have recognized them too, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You knew them - and me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'd met them like once. The Bet Lucien I know pretty well, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

".... I'm confused why this would be the case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a thing known on Bet - that's the name of my Earth, they do Hebrew letters for some dumb reason - that there are duplicates of people, though mostly ones that are born before divergence points, which I don't think is the case here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh I sort of like Hebrew letters - we don't know of any other Earths. I'm confused about how even given that I exist in another earth you ended up knowing me there and landing near me here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's weird and I have no explanation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is reincarnating into people a known thing with a cause in your universe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Closest thing I can think of is a cape called the Butcher. If another cape kills them the Butcher's by now numerous accumulated personalities and memories and watered-down powers relocate into them. But Nikki didn't kill me and wasn't even nearby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It really doesn't seem like the sort of thing a dungeon would do either.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That I wouldn't know, but I'll take your word for it. I could have a Butcher-esque power, this is just a weird way for it to manifest, across worlds like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do your type of powers usually... follow other people, such that you ending up near me would make sense?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia is paying attention but also she is doing one armed pull-ups over here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Powers are confusing and poorly understood but I am not thinking of a pattern that should manifest like that. The other Lucien - uh, his cape name is awful, or I'd just use that - didn't trigger near me or anything..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worse than Turnaround?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tunnel Teen. The PR team was very skittish, someone else managed to name himself on live TV shortly beforehand and they wanted something inoffensive locked in for Lucien."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh that's awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I sold my naming rights to a real estate remodeling company, so at least I got something out of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, why'd you do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The co-op board of our building was attempting to evict me and my parents and we needed the money for a new place. "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Well, you wound up with a better name than he did to boot, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm happy I made the deal. I wonder if there are any other overlapping people between our worlds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There should be more of me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't recognize you, but even if you were a cape in my area I likely wouldn't, lots of people don't unmask. My Lucien doesn't even know what I look like. What I used to look like."

Permalink Mark Unread

Is now an appropriate time to hit on her.... probably not???? Lia is very restrained.

"Oh well, I'll just have to find a way there and check myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that feasible? I would like everyone back home to know I'm alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't actually know of a way to do that, sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be a path through one of the dungeons to another universe, wouldn't be the weirdest thing that turned up in one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...it wouldn't? What was?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I fell in a conceptual soup once. It was very something in an entirely novel way. Another time there were these sort of yodeling buffalo, which were also very something in an entirely novel way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is... a conceptual soup."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A soup. Made of concepts."

"It was purple."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She was covered in it when I pulled her out - my brain tried to claim it had the texture of an endless period of time which was rather disconcerting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I guess synesthesia goo is a little weirder than a dimensional portal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I preferred the buffalo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you get video?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes!

Yodeling buffalo! They really sure do appear to be yodeling, in unison even.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's so fucking weird, I love it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's definitely one of my favorites - not as pretty or fun as the rainbow stars but still really neat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I see those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Why yes of course.

The rainbow stars look like giant opaline caltrops, spinning through space and dive bombing a costume wearing Lia. She flips out of the way, stabbing a sword into a gap between two huge crystals, using it as leverage to push herself into the air, flying down onto the star herself, smashing it with her hands. She stumbles a bit on the landing, running forward to jump down somewhere below. A moment later three translucent people come flying from where she dropped accelerating out of view. They are followed shortly afterwards by Lia, who instead of being translucent is opaque, propelled by some form of jetpack.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cape fights are very different, but obviously I don't have any footage with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How are they different?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well, none of the participants are rainbow stars, but I think even if there were a cape fight with rainbow stars it'd be - more chaotic? The battlefield conditions and everybody's positioning would change more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, that sounds interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a robot to keep track of things for me, which helped a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems handy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I miss it. I wouldn't be able to upgrade it anymore but I think it'd probably still work for a pretty long time without maintenance, if I could get home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are some heads up displays you could probably get by with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that'd be worth looking into if I were expecting to go into combat but I think either Nikki had or I have brought with me a balance disorder which I was solving with tinkertech at home so I really shouldn't get into combat situations here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, that sounds unfortunate - I wonder if there's an esper who can fix that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't know. Probably there are biotinkers who can but the only biotinker I knew was a pharma guy and it was not his core competency."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think there's an esper who can probably handle it? It's totally pretty much impossible to get an appointment with them unless you have something extremely serious, but if you need to be healed to run dungeons I think that'd bump you to the top of the waiting list."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't feel nearly oriented enough to the situation to promise to run dungeons! Either the situation of dungeons or the situation of being in a new body with a new power! Besides, if enough of my previous body was found it should still have all the implants in it, and I was strictly non-bio, so the implants will work the same way if I dig them out of there and stick them in here, I'll be fine to balance like a normal person if I ever get to go home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense. What sort of things did the pharma tinker do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He patched people up when we got hurt - legit healing powers are vanishingly rare but powers that can be turned in that direction there's a fair few - and he made a bunch of things that would let him and other people react faster or fight through pain or whatever. Called himself Miracle Max after the character in the Princess Bride."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, no disease cures?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing you could mass-produce. Counters to biotinker villains sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a really frustrating limitation on inventing powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wasn't the most fun, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually Lucien remembers that they were going to order pizza and people should settle on toppings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have no idea if my food tastes will have changed. At least before I was a pepperoni girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither of us eats pepperoni, unfortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever you're having is probably fine if it's not pineapple."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw!"

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case they will end up with mushrooms on half and a variety of vegetables on the other half. And also a garlicy bread side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica tentatively reports after trying a slice of each half that her tastes are at least basically similar.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds easier that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? I would definitely want to try a new tongue." Lia says, barely flirting at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be annoying to figure out all over again what I like. I have enough to get used to right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that makes a lot of sense."

Lucien and Lia are happy to talk about pizza flavors and explain their dimension to Lorica until it is time to sleep, at which point Lucien heads to his room and Lia flops on the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a guest room, right? Is there paper around or anything like that?

Permalink Mark Unread

There is a guest room! There is a paper and pens in a cabinet in the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's gonna commandeer those. Good thing it was Nikki's her left arm that got fucked up.

Permalink Mark Unread

In the morning Lucien asks Lorica is she would like to purchase clothes and a laptop and such.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, it's your money, but if you're asking if I would like to have them, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

He can give her a (rather large) budget and help her navigate amazon or recommend a place to buy clothes in person. Or well, he can't do that but his mom can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tell you what the softest blankets are if you want more than I have here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't cold overnight, but thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh you can open a window to fix that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lia has yet to figure out that most people don't like soft blankets as much as her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't have to be as much as me! Just a reasonable amount. Which is more than most people I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to spend Lucien's money on blankets that's between you and him, don't bring me into it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not even that much money - good blankets cap out at a few hundred dollars. There are more expensive ones but it turns out they are worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you are counting the dry cleaning costs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway, uh, when's a good time to spot me trying out my new power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh uh, how's 2pm work? I have to update my website before then but I'm free after that since it's a weekend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will probably skip - Atlanta is short staffed so I'm going to run a dungeon and crash with a friend there I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're going all the way to Atlanta for a dungeon? What should I be concluding about the availability of teleportation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not much - it's a short flight and I like to travel and major cities have enough dungeons that I can visit one in the expectation of something turning up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay... is it wise for Lucien to be my lifeline if you're not in town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh that's a good point - I can leave sooner and return tonight? If that's fine with you Lucien."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the experts."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia is in fact going to have to leave approximately now to make this work without having to forgo guiding after her dungeon. Luckily she has a go bag prepped.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So how does this work?" Lorica asks Lucien.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I tag you via tapping you - it feels like a very small electric zap I've been told - and for the next few hours I'll able to retrieve you. My guess is it will work with whatever you're doing - I havn't found a range limit and it works even when someone is in a dungeon and I'm not - but we still might want to start with a test run to check that. When I pull you back you'll look sort of translucent and feel weightless and a bit tingly if you pass through objects on the way back to me, but nothing will effect you more than that. Tags wear off after you return but I can retag you right away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. You don't have to grab me instantly, I'll probably be able to come back, I was before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long would you like me to wait?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...five seconds? Long enough to notice if I can't breathe in the void and might like to, not long enough for me to have a serious problem if the answer is that I can't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Say when?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The slightest of zaps.

"When."

Permalink Mark Unread

Push.

Permalink Mark Unread

A familiar void.

Permalink Mark Unread

Push again?

Permalink Mark Unread

A forest! The air is humid and some unusually large beetles flit through the air, passing between large thick trees, including four grey ones which are mov-which, on second inspection, are actually the legs of what might be a cross of a horse and rhino if that cross was 20 feet tall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow. She would rather Not be stepped on. Pull, pull.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien stops his timer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"One push away is the void, I didn't stay long but am starting to get the sense that I'm physically fine there. Another push and there was very mega fauna."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh - different Earth or a dungeon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How should I distinguish, I've only been in the one dungeon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you could see the horizon that's strong evidence, so is the sky to a lesser extent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I saw sky, but not a lot of it, there were trees in the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably an earth then, but it could just have a ceiling that's illusioned to look like the sky or something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could go back with a camera. I think I probably could pull out fast enough not to get stepped on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go for it - you're still tagged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...camera?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh she doesn't have a phone yet, whoops. She can have his.

Permalink Mark Unread

She figures the app out, then - push push.

Permalink Mark Unread

The giant rhino-horse has walked a small distance away to munch on some leaves, and she take a video undisturbed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wants a good longish video of it but -

Permalink Mark Unread

Five seconds are up, so she will feel a pulling feeling and weightless and shift back to touching Lucien's outstretched hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"- oh, sorry, when I said I could pull out fast enough to not get stepped on I meant you wouldn't have to but I guess I should have explicitly identified a new time horizon." She stops the video and turns it to show him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That looks more like an Earth than any dungeon I've heard of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does this planet have extra-mega fauna?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing that big in the present day - it doesn't look like a dinosaur but maybe something prehistoric like it existed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Know any paleontologists?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Know but I can actually search for similar images online..."

"Paraceratherium transouralicum - I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that right - went extinct more than 20 million years ago."  He can show her the matching picture:
undefined

"Look right to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, not exactly, but I bet the skeletons match."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The paleontologists will be excited to be corrected - or to learn what an evolutionarily similar but maybe not identical species looks like, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be more useful for videography with better mobility, but alas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could get you a drone with a camera?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd work! Even if it'd make me miss the ones I had back home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, what was going on with those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was a Tinker, I built a ton of them and my central software Rete operated them all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What advantages did this have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Over, what, remote-controlling a single one myself? ...all. All of the advantages."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of the newer ones can also do object tracking - the ones you made were smarter than that, I take it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. My bot is very smart. If it told me it was a person I'd believe it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That definitely sounds better!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Last time I asked it told me it was not a person, and I was trying to avoid it, the world's not fit to have children in. Still, very smart bot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The world isn't fit to have children in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well, I don't know about this one. Mine's not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's these big monsters that wreck a city every few months. Like the one that killed me. We're, uh, not building new cities that fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How many cities have been wrecked?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...a lot. Sometimes it's more than just a city. Newfoundland. One of the islands of Japan, I forget which one without my bot reminding me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"Does it seem likely another world's worth of superheroes could help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, maybe, but it seems like you have your own shit to deal with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't have cities getting destroyed. I don't actually think we can like, focus entirely on another world but maybe there's a solution somewhere and it seems important to figure out if so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess the Endbringers are immune to a lot of parahuman powers and maybe wouldn't be immune to comparable espers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What powers might be useful if this was the case?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...finding them when they're not busy attacking cities - though I think we can do that part, actually - and obliterating them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are a variety of destructive powers - what sort of thing might work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know! Nothing has worked yet and I can't look up what's most promising from here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's reasonable. Want to go back to testing your power some more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. I could see what's beyond the megafauna zone. How long do you think is a good amount of time to explore before you pull me back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can give you a while now that we've verified I can pull you back? And by default you can return on your own ideally to spare me the backlash."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. How long does the tag last?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit over three hours on average - never less than one and a half I've noticed and I can feel it weaken before it goes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She notes the time on her phone, and pushes, thrice. Is there another interstitial void? If so, one more push.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flipping through universes feels oddly like using a muscle to tap herself along, as if you she could flex the muscle more actively and keep flexing it rather than going one at a time. Still, she can find another universe this way, a windswept desert of white sandy dunes, a moon on the horizon three times the size it should be, blue and green and cloudy.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes pictures and then pulls back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow that's beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to maybe get some sort of rebreather before I check out more planets in case they don't all have oxygen. Or atmospheres."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was this one breathable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't notice anything wrong, but I wouldn't with all possible atmosphere mixes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need something elaborate or only for a few minutes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I don't know, if I knew what I was going to walk into here I'd have a different approach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet you Lia knows where you can get custom suits for hostile environments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't known her long and yet that already doesn't surprise me much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She enjoys doing a wide variety of dungeons and her powers would let her function in them without the suits but not without accumulating more backlash than is actually wise for her to put with." Not that this always stops her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are her powers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A sort of durability that makes it harder to do more than small amounts of harm to her, combined with some self-healing and the ability to do some very impressive physical feats though that last one is at least partially just her being herself and unrelated to her powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good powerset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it would probably be a lot less useful on someone who wasn't so... Lia-ish? She is very excited by the ability to try things that would normally be ill-advised, which she can do given her power and my power acting as an additional safety measure against her getting trapped somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd you meet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I met her running dungeons and she declared that we were friends soon after. We didn't actually become partners until a while later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you have somebody else back then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, though we weren't all that compatible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which means it - takes longer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So is there an obvious place I should be selling the photographs or anything so I can not mooch off you forever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know of some people who specialize in finding commercial uses for new dungeons, maybe they would be interested?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, that sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think you can take people? Or equipment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd kind of expect it to be only what I'm wearing and carrying but I could try to, like, make off with your least favorite article of furniture?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She can have a chair to try with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yoink?

Permalink Mark Unread

The chair does not go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back she comes. "Sorry, you'll have to dispose of it in some more conventional manner if you want rid of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh well, it'll last to be wobbly another day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas. Anything else need checking before you call your people, or give me their number, whichever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've mostly not talked with the people before but would be very happy to have the excuse to call them and help you with setting things up if that's cool? Or I could give you there numbers to do on your own if you'd rather."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want an excuse to do clerical work for me I would not dream of stopping you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to hear!"

And so Lucien gets to email some of the coolest people! Said cool people turn out to want to know if Lorica can carry a super light weight camera drone, and if she can bring back plant and stool samples from the megafauna world.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost certainly to both! Honestly I'd be kind of surprised if I left behind an entire heavy backpack."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think there are some nice hostile environment esper suits that you could get with this kind of money?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like the next best thing to my old supersuit. Do they fly? Mine could fly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think they can? Lia has the jetpack but I'm pretty sure that thing is actually really dangerous if you don't have super durability."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would expect so, unless it was a Tinker jetpack, which presumably it is not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia is actually on hand to answer this question!

"Yeah, my understanding is she doesn't use it when anyone else is nearby."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she have opinions on the aesthetics? This place does custom designs for no additional charge.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My old one was navy blue and kind of scale-mail ish but it was trying to do different things, as long as it's not neon or something we're good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They need some sort of color pallet at least - I could go tell them to make it all navy blue?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not attached to navy blue. Maybe mostly navy blue and, like, white and gold or something for details."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien is useless at this but there's a color selector thing she can poke at?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, pokepokepoke.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want me to put in the order now and you can pay me back when the money shows up from your megafauna reconnaissance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I sort of thought the people who wanted the samples were shelling out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, they were paying in cash and I don't expect you'll actually have the money until you start making runs for them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then yeah, if you're pretty sure they'll cough up I'll take a loan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool."

Lucien goes ahead and purchases the suit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually a Lia returns!

"Hey you two!" she says, flopping onto Lucien, "You need me to drag you away for some guiding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I only ended up pulling Lorica back once, I bet I'll get to zero just from this after a bit and I'm not really in the mood for much more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I seem adequately mobile on my own and we just had a miscommunication about how long I wanted to stay taking photos."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What'd you find to take photos of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica shows her.

Permalink Mark Unread

".... I want to ride one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't seem to be able to bring chairs, let alone people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. Could you bring back an egg back? And then find it a good place to grow up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can probably bring an egg if I find one. Please note that I have a balance disorder and cannot safely tromp around the wilderness stealing from nests very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure those were mammals so probably they wouldn't lay eggs? I'm not sure how large the young would be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That and I couldn't necessarily confidently identify the egg of one species in particular unless I saw parents sitting on it, in which case I wouldn't want to take anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, please don't take a baby animal on my account even if you do get the chance. Egg would be fine but I guess that probably isn't happening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can keep my eyes peeled but cannot at this time honorably accept an assignment with a deadline."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deadline?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A time by which you want an egg, as opposed to the acknowledgment that in the fulness of my many explorations to come if I see an egg I'll pick it up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yes, of course. You can't rush adventure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien looks skeptically at Lia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've seen video of you jumping down what must have been three stories to get to a section of a dungeon faster rather than taking half a second to set up a rappelling line."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got to do one of those cool landings like they do in the movies!"

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay fine. It is usually not wise to rush adventure but I do it anyways and then Lucien judges me for it afterwards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you have a cape alternate then she's probably having a great time, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh I'm sure - having powers has worked out really well for me and I expect this would be even more the case in a world where they don't come with backlash."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thinker powers do, sorta."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, well. I guess it is not impossible I could get one of those but if they are powers related to thinking I really don't have the temperament to be a good match for one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're all combat applicable. Every single parahuman power is combat applicable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I don't think that's true here? Also I think I'd be fine without a combat applicable power if it was still useful for adventuring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure what exactly you mean by adventuring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An adventure is when you seek out difficult and novel challenges that are important to solve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think a lot of things meet that definition which aren't conventionally in the category I think of when I hear 'adventure'. Like, are statisticians having adventures?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they can be! I might want to add that there are risks involved, which can still be the case with the right sort of statistics I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What risks are the right sort of statisticians taking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Collecting statistics on police brutality in a corrupt country, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You said all your worlds powers were combat applicable? I'm confused how that applies to your current power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, some of them you have to be like, what if this person had their power and also a knife."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm confused about how your power would help even then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can disappear and reappear! If I wanted to go around doing murders this would be very helpful!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose? The fact that it lets you travel to other Earth seems wildly more significant than that aspect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I can't move in the interstitial void, so if I wanted to make a clean getaway after the murders I'd do it by moving in some direction in the alternate Earth. It's certainly not the most exciting to nonviolent people component of every power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I expect you'd have to get really unlikely to get a person who would use this power to do violence like that? I guess that doesn't mean it's not usable for combat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, this is about the powers, not about the people - though separately capes are a very conflict-prone population."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I don't think that's true here, though it's possible espers being paid to do dungeons is obscuring an innate tendency."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "I'd believe it's just us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a lot of powered violence directed against people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, all the time, huge supervillain-backed gang problems and some roving super serial killers and a cape cult and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your world keeps sounding worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It's bad. And ending."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a timetable on that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, there's no projected hard stop. Just the decline of civilization. People might putter along in postapocalyptic tribes indefinitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're vaguely similar in wealth to us right now, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have our GDP memorized but it's not obviously wildly off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien can't relate.

"Is it mostly those Endbringers you mentioned?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes a cape'll take out a city, but the Endbringers are doing it the most consistently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... I'm going to spend more time trying to look for a way to get to your home dimension, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you can do it in enough quantity maybe we can evacuate the place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that or send espers who can stop the Endbringers if that's an option."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't so far have the impression that your average power level is higher than ours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe there will be some specific combination that could work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't rule it out but that's also true of just capes, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm. Could you say more details about the Endbringers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, she can summarize the three of them. Her old powerset had her immune to the Simurgh but she's not sure that carried across.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow. Those are incredibly terrible. And not obviously beatable by anything I know about.... maybe if we could trick them into a dungeon before it vanished?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In general they go where they want, you can't corral them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they were within an order of magnitude of human weight I could get them places..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, they aren't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scion could do it, probably, but he doesn't. Scion's the most powerful cape in the world and he spends twenty four hours a day doing... random... nice things. An inordinate amount of literally rescuing kittens from trees. He usually shows up eventually to an Endbringer attack and hits them hard enough that they leave, but he doesn't finish the job."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does he have a reason for this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't know, he doesn't really talk besides the time he told somebody his name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well that's... frustrating."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it sort of makes sense to me as a way to be... when everything else is too hard I still want to go around and do things to help people, even if figuring out how to best do that is difficult."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it doesn't make sense to me at all but he is evidently not trying to make sense to me." Sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica's megafauna money comes through the next day, with her hazardous environment suit arriving soon afterwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does it fit?

Permalink Mark Unread

There are various straps and exchangeable foam pieces to get it to fit a variety of relatively fit body types, so it can accommodate her fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's less comfy than my armor at home but it should do me for exploring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bring me back pictures! Wow I'm actually jealous of your power I'm never jealous of someone else's power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I can bring you pictures. I miss my old power but this one seems okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien can tag Lorica again, just in case.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will go on a jaunt to see what else there is to see, counting her steps as she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

After another void ana of the moon earth she can finds a world that blurs the lines between being composed of broad steep mountains with deep valleys or a rocky biome crisscrossed by slopey canyons.

Another two steps ana and she finds a place with an ankle deep ocean literally boiling around her - her suit informs her that it's 120 degrees celsius outside. What look like bundles of snakes flop around with remarkable speed and intent through the boiling water.

(The sensation of having a muscle she is only briefly tensing to step between individual worlds remains.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, well, she doesn't want to get lost or pick up habits that without Alternate Universe Lucien would get her lost.

Naturally the outfitting procedure included waterproofing her camera but the heat can't be good for it; she pops back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What'd you find?" Lia asks while bouncing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maximum terrain ruggedness," photos, "and a boiling ocean, I didn't stick around in that one but I'm glad I got an environment suit first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, I want to climb that one - it looks great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The suit should handle the boiling ocean fine for several minutes - also those snake things look pretty far off from anything we've got here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are unfamiliar to me too. Is the camera rated for 120º C, that's what my suit said it was. - should I be returning to a location that isn't your apartment in case something sticks to my suit boots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might be a good idea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, camera, I got one of those!" Lia can return with a heavy duty GoPro.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...again, the specific condition I asked about was a hundred and twenty degrees Celsius."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I've taken this into an oven dungeon that was way hotter than that and it was fine. It's a custom model."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, do you want more pictures of the snakey things right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes please! Or, well, video is what it's designed for and would be even better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." She equips the GoPro and returns to the hot place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snakeballs! It's clearly when she has longer to look at them that they are single organisms and not composed of individual snakes, with holes that might be mouths near the center.

Permalink Mark Unread

So more like anemones, maybe. She doesn't wander too far, she doesn't want to pop back into Lucien's neighbors' place.

Back she comes.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a towel placed on her landing spot now.

"Oh wow, those look.... like I could imagine seeing them in a dungeon but they look more natural and less imagined by a person than dungeons do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dungeons look imagined by people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you can get dragons and clockwork and dildos and all sorts of imagined by people sort of things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. Weird. ...of the three Endbringers I think only the Simurgh looks especially person-imagination-derived."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not enthused by either class of creature looking person-imagination derived."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One theory is that the Endbringers are capes but they are similar to and coordinated with each other and no other entities in a way that makes that seem unlikely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think there are some people who believe the dungeons are created by espers but they are not very convincing conspiracy theorist type people. Though at least they are trying to explain dungeons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Couldn't espers just as easily be created by dungeons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I think that makes about as much sense, but it doesn't appeal to conspiracy theorists as much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I tweet the snakes video? Or uh, the canyon-mountain pictures."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm not sure how much that will cut into my monetization potential."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will probably make you much more well known, I'm very famous."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at Lucien for a fact check.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is indeed very famous, it's not just large ego."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My ego is proportionally sized to my level of fame!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure that's how it works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, go for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Dungeons don't have anything over what's right here on Earths', and send."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of them had a weird moon situation, I really don't know if we can assume they're all 'Earths'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can send a helpful reply correcting the original."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your call what standard of accuracy you want here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, Lucien will complain if I'm wrong on the internet too often."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course he will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if it's going to mislead people! Or it's intentional."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But what if she was merely careless about weights and measures?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well that's not even that hard to correct."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made him an account to post corrections from but he hardly uses it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Twitter is really sort of terrible and I can just edit Wikipedia instead. I use the account to follow Lia and people with good takes on esper logistics and dungeon harvesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What... is Twitter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, does your world have social media?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...not under that name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The internet? Forums or blogs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have the internet and forums and blogs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Twitter is a microblogging platform - probably that's not actually a good description, I can just show you."

Here is a phone with Twitter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"These are all different people's micro blogs? Next to each other?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, here's Lia's."

She has millions of followers, whatever those are.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Followers is... readers? Subscribers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

He can show her who he follows - the aforementioned people with good esper logistics and dungeon harvesting takes. He's followed back by a few of them, and a hundred or so Lia fans.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, what are the good takes?

Permalink Mark Unread

Esper logistics is hard! People can improve this via adding emergency lanes which is worth it in certain specific cases but often worse than just adding more regular lanes to streets or not doing that at all.

You can harvest stainless steel from several different dungeons in huge quantities and that is amazing! People overfocus on that one gold dungeon and instead should pay attention to the frequency other more useful metals show up.

The entire situation with Venezuelan dungeon privatization is actually really complicated and fascinating and Lucien has booked marked almost every tweet in a thread about it.

People should actually record lots of data with dungeons and if they aren't going to this amateur reporter is going to show up and do it himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is really interesting and she might wind up reading Twitter for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, that's how they get you.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a novel form of getting! Normally she'd just get her bot to digest it for her and present her with the interesting bits at a convenient moment but it's not here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should post your own pictures! I can retweet you so people know you're where I got them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay..." How does she make a Twitter account.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will need a name and profile image -and - have they set her up with an email yet?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can do that first.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is "lorica" taken? Presumably there's no protectorate.gov but she's accustomed to the "lorica" part.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is not taken!

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica she shall be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Same for her twitter? She might need to add something to make the username itself unique.

Permalink Mark Unread

If "lorica" is taken on Twitter she can go with... uh... lorica_hamata, seems loosely appropriate to the new power.

Permalink Mark Unread

That works.

"Want me to take a picture of you in the suit for your profile picture?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I kind of stole this girl's face. Maybe just one of the shots of the neat moons."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh yeah, that makes sense.

And ta-da, she has a twitter account.

"You should follow me! And I can follow you back."

Permalink Mark Unread

Clickety.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are liable to get a decent amount of attention if Lia follows you back," comments Lucien, who is catching up on the backlog of a blog he's a fan of.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...god I miss my robot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would just manage this for me. It gave me a digest of whatever was going on with the parahumans forums, so I didn't have to wade into it myself. It got itself made a moderator."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh that does sound great. Maybe I'd be willing to post if a bot would summarize the replies for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The replies aren't nearly that bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, they really are. You just have a secret secondary power of being immune to caring about them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I care about them! I'm just not very upset - people can be all sorts of ways and that's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean I don't disagree but sometimes the way they are is stating false things, or worse misstating true things, and it turns out explaining things to them can take an infinite period of time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh that's a skill issue, just be more like me and don't know enough to correct them in detail."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How is that a skill issue?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have too much skill and it's causing you issues."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien suppress a laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is a little funny.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So should I follow you back or are you issued with too many skills for the attention?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Issued with... what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want the attention you would get from my following you back or will you mind it like Lucien ended up minding it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I mind as long as it's not expected that I return all attention with my own attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are not."

And followed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will pick her way through the process of getting the photos up and only swear a little bit about not having her Tinker instincts any more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I tag you so people know you deserve credit for the photos I posted?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case there will be people replying to Lorica's posts pretty soon, speculating about how she knows Lia (is she sleeping with Lia? Probably but like, how much is an open question) and where the pictures were taken (did things escape from a dungeon somewhere where the sea was for some reason boiling? Was Lia lying and this is a dungeon? Is it just photoshop, obviously it's photoshop.)

Permalink Mark Unread
Hi folks! My power is to pop into adjacent dimensions. It works to get out of dungeons but it's also got me all these other places. Let me know if you want a souvenir and we'll talk pricing.
Permalink Mark Unread

Her dms are now full of people interested in souvenirs! Some people have specific requests - a tooth or leaf from the megafauna world, some moon-dimension dust, and one of those snake balls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are any of them offering MONEY.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes! Amounts vary from 10 dollars to ten thousand to a dick pic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does this website have a block feature.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does!

Permalink Mark Unread

Block for the dick pick guy! What souvenir does the 10k person want?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tooth or leaf from the megafauna world.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leaf is doable! She can do a leaf. How will they want it shipped?

Permalink Mark Unread

UPS is fine! It can be sent to their address, does she accept Venmo?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I be figuring out how to accept Venmo?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah that should be doable? I can help you set it up if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or they can pay me via my merch store and I can have my agent wire you the money or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have a bank account at this time so I'm not sure that would actually be any more convenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, were the scientists sending your money directly to Lucien or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they're sending a check, which I was imagining going to a bank to open an account with it as an initial deposit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you could get this guy to do another check or you can have him pay me and I can get you a check or cash or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if I should figure out some kind of escrow situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just assume people trust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that online peer to peer merchant sites like eBay don't end up doing that, but possibly you are selling things that above their typical paygrade."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is ten K for leaf a lowball?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure - you could take bids? The fact that you can get a lot of leaves makes it seem like plausibly too much because you can just flood the market later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm just trying to triangulate off what people offered. I'm sure ten bucks is a lowball."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah - if someone is buying it as a collectors item it might matter whether it's the first one of something you've given out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that makes sense. I'll see if the leaf guy is willing to pay in advance, I have no problem sticking a leaf in the mail for him if so." Typety type.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure - can leaf guy get a letter of authenticity with the date signed by her along with the leaf?

Permalink Mark Unread

...sure. Would he like it notarized while she's at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds great.

Permalink Mark Unread

She was kind of joking but sure. She'll write up the letter in advance and ask Lucien where to find a notary, he seems like he'd know.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't tell whether to feel offended or seen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, seen if you do know where to find a notary and optionally offended if you don't, surely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I only know how to find a notary because I helped Lia setup her merch store. For fun. And also my mom found one for a joke a while back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A notarized joke?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was very stressed about getting my schedule for my dungeon work as perfect as possible and was overdoing it and my parents helped get me to calm down and then on my first day of work presented me with a notarized copy of the schedule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry if I offended you by thinking you'd know where a notary was for the wrong reasons or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, it's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why did you think he knew where a notary was? Aside from everything about him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, there wasn't anything else, it was just everything about him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotcha."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

How far can she get in setting up a bank account from here, does she have to physically go to a bank - will this be easier once she's registered as an "esper" -

Permalink Mark Unread

She does have to visit a bank and esper registration should come first but Lucien is happy to help her figure out how to do all these steps, it's honestly pretty fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very helpful, thank you." Fortunately her name isn't taken in this universe. Lorica has a bank account sufficient to receive a 10k wire soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem, figuring out identification dependencies was neat and worked out better than I expected. I made a flow chart about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I see?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She can! Here it is on his tablet. He is all excited about it and spent a while on the format to get it to accurately communicate how you can go about getting new ID based on other ID and accounts and such.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neat. Maybe even useful to people other than me someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably I should put it up online somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I encourage it."

She sends the guy the leaf. Finds some off the shelf software to put together a photo blog and commission/souvenir shopping cart.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets quite a few followers! And also some newspapers who would like to interview her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll take interviews in writing.

Permalink Mark Unread

People want to know what her powers are, what places she's visited, and her entire life story.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's from another world to begin with where empowered people are different and there aren't dungeons but there's lots of supervillains and big a few big city-killer kaiju. She has visited all the places depicted on her photo blog. She doesn't want to go too much into her life story but she didn't come to this world on purpose and had a different power before.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, this certainly doesn't result in less public interest in her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll cope. And mail people leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want a better landing spot? We could rent a basement or something that won't mind getting dirty if you bring back anything particularly troublesome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might make sense now that I'm bringing in my own income. Getting my own place in general might make sense, really, I wouldn't have imposed if I'd had alternatives."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I've enjoyed having you here. I hope you won't move too far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know anybody else on the entire planet, I might as well stay in the city."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's a good city but I might be biased - most people prefer across the Hudson."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do they have to say against Jersey City?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Its not New York. Which, to be fair, is accurate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not everywhere can be New York."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, objectively a surprisingly large number of places can be New York."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can they? Are there six New Yorks in this dimension for some reason? I guess yours is probably bigger since Behemoth didn't hit it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well they have a state, which covers a few other cities that are in some sense part of New York. Also Newark isn't a New York but sounds like it is. And West New York is a town in New Jersey not too far from here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that number of places is in fact surprising."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly they should probably put some back. Newark Penn Station is a stop on the way to New York Penn Station and they haven't updated the speaker system in decades and it's impossible to tell the difference between the two announcements."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no. Would that I could offer to fix it for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"By renaming Newark?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"By fixing the speaker system! But I don't have a Tinker power any more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh I didn't know it could do mundane stuff like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tinkers are really good with mundane technology that's remotely like whatever we do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I really wish we had Tinkers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, maybe one day I'll find Earth Bet and evacuate it and you can have some! Just not me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, your new power is neat too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, it's definitely better than nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems like it might be turn out to be really important?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might, but lots of powers seem like they might turn out to be really important, and then they don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose so - it's definitely not the usual sort of maybe important power that I'd expect to see here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think espers have a lower average power level even not accounting for backlash."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't tell whether this is a good thing or a bad thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, your world's not ending, so that's cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that is definitely not worth the more powerful powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We wind up doing a lot of cops and robbers shit. It's stupid and wasteful and some people just will not stop doing supercrimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think that's a result of the more powerful powers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the fact that capes need capes to stop them is? I think your average esper would be easily handled with containment foam and there's lots of capes who just aren't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, I guess that makes sense. Even a lot of dungeons are handleable by baseline humans with enough effort and gear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And, like, they do get worse if you don't stop them but they don't get city-annihilating worse, right? They kill a couple hundred people and then leave for a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah - I think the dungeons and espers have probably been beneficial on net and this isn't true for your type of powers it sounds like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And it sucks so much because they so easily could be - I don't think they would be even if we didn't have the Endbringers, but it'd be close and I could be wrong? And if we didn't have the Endbringers and also people would stop running around doing murders then a handful of tinkers and a couple other people could have completely revolutionized everything about everyone's way of life and it would be awesome! And instead those of us with prosocial ambitions fit it into our spare time around trying to prevent the murders and the collapse of civilization."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe... I'm not sure if we have enough powers to help you with your crime rate even if we could do transport freely between the two places. We could evac innocents I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Though I guess people might still trigger even if you move them from Bet to here and then I'm not sure if they'd still be capey or not. I'm not very capey but there's only the one of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet the world would be a better place if there were more but I guess we'll have to make do with just the one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate that but while I may flatter myself I think I'm one of the better possible capes to have landed on you, a lot of them would have been trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh I meant more of you, not more capes in general."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. As far as I know I have only bodysnatched one person but I suppose there's no known law guaranteeing that I didn't do it simultaneously to a dozen more? Though I'd expect us all to be online under the name Lorica so we'd have noticed each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think you'd get along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, absolutely, I'm delightful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really are."

Oh no why does he say words.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um."

And his face. Why does his face blush.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's not helping!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... you're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think you'd get along with other-Lucien?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh thank god.

"Uh, I think so? I definitely wouldn't dislike other me. Might depend on how similar we were - if we had different powers or something that would make it easier to not just feel... like I'd be talking to myself, I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you do, his is making furrows in things. Any size, he can do microchips."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh yeah you mentioned him. Man that's really weird. What is he... like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well, like... you. He's just you only a cape. And a bit younger than you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was he doing with his life?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fighting crime. And the microchip thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly fighting crime sounds like a weird fit for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was planning to go rogue - that means not-cops-and-robbers - after I graduated from the Wards, which is the junior heroes organization, but he didn't seem fully decided."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would guess he'd prefer to work with an existing structure than be independent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which means Protectorate, which means hero work," she shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah that'd make sense. You aren't a fan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My dad's a hero. I don't disapprove. It just wasn't want I wanted to be doing with my life and my power would've let me 80/20 a lot of the value without having to personally be in the field shooting tranquilizer darts at people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You couldn't do that with the Protectorate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't really speak well of them, if they're trying to be the organization for heroes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that's just it, they're trying to be the organization for heroes and not for industrialists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was there an organization for industrialists?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Disappointing. There isn't any here either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I don't seem to be having any trouble making the business end work without an organization."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's really impressive - you'll be making more money than most espers at this rate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure the rate'll keep, surely eventually I'll wear out people's interest in owning extradimensional leaves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, hopefully more exploring finds even cooler things than alien leaves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. I can be the bottleneck of interdimensional trade with another populated Earth maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have no idea how you'd price that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A percentage on top of a flat per-trip fee, presumably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're going to end up getting a bunch of like, tech companies wanting to send information to each other? I think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably, yeah, I'll be a sneakernet."

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles. And then goes to google some things.

"Okay I bet you can max out bandwidth demands - the stock market and something internety both aren't going to be too much traffic. Latency will be a bigger issue, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially if the world is far away, yeah, I don't want to go faster, I worry I'd get lost."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd expect to be able to pull you back but maybe if you go far enough I'll have a range limit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have any guess how far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My guess is I don't have a range limit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then sometime I should try getting as far as I can without getting totally lost, within your time limit, and then if you can't pull me back I'll come back the long way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like a good thing to test - I can manage people in four dimensional dungeons fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How deep do those go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know - Lia might?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she's easily messaged.

Permalink Mark Unread

They vary just as much as three dimensional dungeons do, so some are pretty ~deep. Also look at this fish I found [photo of Lia holding a glowing two headed sword fish sort of thing]

Permalink Mark Unread
Whoa is that alive or dead
Permalink Mark Unread

Alive, I had to throw him back a second later when he tried to electrocute me.

Permalink Mark Unread
Into a fishtank or a dungeon?
Permalink Mark Unread

Dungeon, we're just finishing up and everyone's out. You can let Lucien know I'll be at his silo soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lia'll be at your silo soon," she dutifully relays. "And says 4D dungeons can get 'pretty deep'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish I knew how 'deep' a single dimension is. Like, is it it a Planck length, is it half an inch, I have no idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe an esper who can properly do 4D would know? Lia doesn't have anything special for it, she just spent a lot of time practicing in VR and stuff until she had a knack for thinking in 4D so she could do some dungeons with espers who can move people in it around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...sounds like pretty good VR. Inconvenient that I can't take passengers or I could see if any of those espers could just, like, tell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Oh - we could time me pulling you back? I think my power works equally fast in all directions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, how fast is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People accelerate towards me at about 15 meters per second squared."

Permalink Mark Unread

".......for those of us who used to rely on robots we programmed with our superpowers to do math whenever it came up in daily life, does that mean that if I take more than a second to get to you I'm more than fifteen meters away or is it more complicated than that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit more complicated - you travel 7.5 meters in the first second, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's going to take so long to figure out if I go slowly and it turns out they're a Planck length but I really don't want to get lost."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It took you more than an instant to get back the one time I pulled you, I think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do people sometimes take only an instant if you pull them from a short distance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No - I suppose it takes a moment to start. I think you were longer than that but I'm not certain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is your reaction time up to this or do we need some kind of speed camera setup?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll depend on how far apart things turn out to be - we can try without the speed camera and if that doesn't work I will ask Lia whether she has any camera fast enough to be useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now's a good time given that he'll be heading to do guiding soon - he can set-up the towel again and tag Lorica.

"Want to try going to the closest dimension and I can time your return, and then we can do the farthest one you've gone to so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." Out she goes into the void.

Permalink Mark Unread

And back she comes.

"Looks like 0.35 - the minimum time I get is 0.31, but that difference might just be my reflexes. Try farthest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets suited up and goes out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And back.

"That was 0.84 - which means you're traveling about 1.8 meters according to my calculator app."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, I wonder if they're all the same, tap me again and I'll go out to the next one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tap.

Permalink Mark Unread

Out she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was 0.85 that time? Hm..." Lucien can start a table and go about testing this systematically.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll do this till he needs to go if he's amenable.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is happy too!

They can eventually figure out that the non-void dimensions vary in distance between them, from under a tenth of a meter to almost a full meter. Lucien googles around someone and discovers that the consensus among espers who do 4D dungeons is that Earth is closer to a planck unit wide four dimensionally than to anything else, so if he extends that logic to the other dimensions Lorica is visiting it would imply that the actual dimensions are extremely thin, with the voids between them varying in four dimensional thickness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Interesting. She will publish these findings on the internet while Lucien goes to get some guiding done.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Lucien and Lia. Who return together an hour and a half later.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hear you two did science together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, the interstitial void dimensions are yea big." Gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh neat - and smaller than I'd expect, there are plenty of 4D dungeons that deep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aren't things that move in 4D a bit cramped like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends - you can fit a lot of 3D in. Also some are a lot deeper than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess humans usually don't want to live in environments that are a lot taller than us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica gets her own place, a house with an unfinished basement she can track otherworldly substances into at minimal risk. She mails people leaves and stuff. Pays Lucien back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Goes on the Internet and sees people talking about how they're not making rent or are refugees or need to get their cat surgery. She goes through four of these before she hits one that doesn't list a specific target amount and then that one gets everything left in her bank account.

Permalink Mark Unread

She should really donate some blood. She goes and finds a blood drive. Two of them, actually. She puts an Uber on her credit card, it doesn't check her bank account, and goes and donates a pint at the first one - she doesn't actually know Nikki Carter's health history but they test everything redundantly, and nothing Nikki has is worse than not having enough blood. She Ubers to the second blood drive after and lies to them even more and they squeeze a second pint out of her and give her cookies, but someone else might want the cookies so she doesn't take any, and then she walks out of the blood drive and falls over on her face. Her nose bleeds surprisingly little, considering. It's okay, she didn't have any other plans lined up yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay miss?" asks a man's voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I'm fine!" she says, she can't take up any of this nice man's time. She sits up, tastes blood on her lip, and throws up on the sidewalk.

Permalink Mark Unread

The man - who from this angle she can now see is clearly homeless - does not look reassured by this at all!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no. "Do you want my house? I have a house but you can have it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um." Does anyone else out here want to help with the crazy lady. "No thank you? Are you sure you're okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you sure you don't want it? It's a nice house."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure - is there someone with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, is there supposed to be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or someone I could call?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should call whoever it would bring you the most joy to call!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, right now that would be someone who you know well and is nearby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! I could introduce you to Lucien if you want!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds great."

Permalink Mark Unread

She calls Lucien's number.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Lorica, what's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This man I met wanted to be introduced to you! Here!" She hands over her phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wha-"

"Hi I think your friend is having a bad time - she fainted and vomited - and she told me she knows you well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's going to slump against the side of the building until she has another idea for something to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And she can't tell me herself because?"

"She tried to offer me her house!"

Well that..... is there anything that causes vomiting and delusions? Lucien has no idea. Lucien wraps up the remainder of the conversation pretty fast and the guy returns the phone to Lorica, dialing 911 on his own to call an ambulance.

"Hi Lorica, how're you feeling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine, how are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Uh, did you faint and vomit a minute ago?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I should really clean that up. Do you know how to clean up a sidewalk - oh, please excuse me, I'm sure you have better things to do, I should just look on the internet -" She hangs up to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Actually she is getting a call back from him so fast!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh okay. "Hello!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you are probably having some sort of episode of something and an ambulance is going to come and pick you up and check you out and Lia is already on her way to meet you at the hospital, okay? I'm a bit further out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But there are probably people who really need the ambulance! Even if there aren't any right now someone could need it while it's picking me up and they'd have to wait longer and that could be dangerous!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I think right now the ambulance is going your way anyways, so it would probably be most helpful if they found you quickly when you got there and didn't have to look around or anything, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I guess. But you should really tell them that I don't need it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm...I'll think about it. Lia will see you at the hospital, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She should be rescuing people from dungeons! Or resting because she works so hard!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, right now what she's going to do is visit you at the hospital."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But what if there are people in a dungeon right now she could be saving?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even she needs a break sometimes, but you can ask her about it when you see her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But going to the hospital isn't a break! If she needs a break she should take a real break!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can tell her that, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually there is an ambulance - is she oriented to place, person, and time?

Permalink Mark Unread

She is Lorica and remembers the address she sent the Uber to and knows what day it is in this dimension!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good enough! They notice she has a band-aid on an arm - did she inject something?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I gave blood. Twice." She rolls up the other sleeve.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah - you're really not supposed to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I don't need it as much as people in the hospital do!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you can donate more if you don't have so little it's dangerous. We can give you a transfusion now and in two months you can donate again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! No no transfusions I don't consent to transfusions give it to someone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're going to keep being faint until your blood supply is replenished."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No transfusions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. Its not actually a medical emergency that he's going to insist.

"We can do an IV line with electrolytes than, if you're okay with that. We are not in danger of running out of those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you get me a nurse trainee who needs practice or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Once we're at the hospital I'll see what I can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No transfusions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just an IV, yeah."

If she doesn't complain further they can get her set-up in the ambulance, though they have to insert another line once they're at the hospital. She doesn't get a nurse trainee - they do not in fact trust someone inexperienced to manage the delusional patient who is refusing care.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't even occur to her that they might have lied to her about getting her a nurse trainee! This old woman is clearly just entering the workforce after her grandchildren she was providing primary care to grew up or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia shows up a couple of minutes later.

"Hey Lorica."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, you really shouldn't be here, you have an important job you should be either doing or resting from!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, right now I'm here to check on you and poke you to check if you are an esper."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a cape, not an esper."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could be both! Mind if I touch your arm to check."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess if you really want to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She does! Touch!

Permalink Mark Unread

"...oh wow if you have magic touching-you-makes-people-feel-better powers you should probably go give everybody else in the hospital who's here for real problems a turn."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's more compatible than Lucien! Not the first time she's encountered someone like that but still surprising.

"I think it's just going to work on you - what if I leave my hand on your arm while I text Lucien."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why wouldn't it work on anyone else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because they won't be a compatible esper having an awakening like you are, I'm pretty sure."

Oh good Lucien was quick to reply.

"I think it'd probably be better if you came with me back to Lucien's place - he has me tagged and can pull us both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To stop occupying the hospital's bed?" Lorica asks hopefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's one reason for it."

Lia asks the nurse if they need to do anything to leave and is told that technically no but Lorica really should have a blood transfusion.

"Uh, Lorica it be okay if we got you a blood transfusion to do at Lucien's place? I can go with you to donate later so it'll all work out and these nurses won't have to worry about you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want a transfusion! It's obviously better if I don't take one and you donate blood anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I'm not going to donate next month but I will if you take the transfusion." Her backlash combines badly with donating blood but it'll be fine to do it the one time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't like that plan!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I get backlash from donating blood since my power regenerates it. The backlash is fixable if you're around and up for it but not if you're very tired."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh I'm happy to help with your backlash whenever you want, I'm not too tired at all!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could I get you to accept the blood as a favor to me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't see how it's a favor to you at all!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she tried. Lia will take the IV bag to go and if there's anything left to figure out the nurse can dm her on twitter or something.

"Lucien's going to pull us back to his place using his power, okay? You remember how that works?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then, she can double tap Lorica and off they go, accelerating through walls rapidly as there surroundings become a blur. Less than a minute later they stop all at once, Lucien's hand on each.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fuck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me guess, this also doesn't work on anyone except - oh, it works on Lia, I guess that's okay," she says, glancing at where his hand is on Lia's.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not this intensely!" He's touching her but he's pretty sure that wouldn't be necessary to tell that they're compatible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I just told Lia I can help with her backlash any time and that goes for you too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm."

Wow that is really quite a lot. But there are things to do. Well, first they should sit on a couch, still holding hands. And then there are things to do.

"Uh, Lorica, have you noticed that you are uh, thinking differently than normal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't especially, no!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, well. Do you have any guesses as to why I might be suggesting that you have been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because I'm apparently going to be an esper and that sometimes happens to espers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When an esper awakens they get a very large amount of their backlash for a week, which is what you feel draining away from you through contact with me, but that's not really the main reason I think you've been thinking differently than normal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- I'm not giving it to you, right, it's just gone? I wouldn't want to give you more backlash..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're getting rid of my backlash too, actually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh okay, that's good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm. Do you have another guess as to why I might think you're thinking differently than normal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it because I gave away all my money and that implies I just had some lying around before to give away?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I didn't know that but it is certainly an example of the sort of behavior that causes me to think you are currently thinking differently than you normally do. Can you - figure out the ways your decision making is different such that you decided to give all of your money away now and didn't before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't see how that would help anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm hoping it will help you notice when you're making decisions you might on reflection not think were a good idea later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I hear that this matters to you and I want to help but I'm really confused about how it will benefit you so I'm not sure I can execute on the request usefully."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that sure is a backlash right there.

"Uh, I care about you achieving your goals? And also want this next to week to go as smoothly as possibly which I think will be easiest if you have some amount of insight into what's going on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh that's very sweet of you but I'm fine! But if anything un-smooth happens this week I'll help you with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you are not fine and am worried that you don't realize this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm sorry, I don't know how to solve that problem but I'll think about it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I was convinced that you could tell what decisions you were making were a result of the backlash that would help. You were able to identify the money one - can you guess at any others?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"....we're trying to figure out what's special about today in particular, right? I donated blood twice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I heard that one - do you know why you don't do that normally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I think I had several reasons actually, huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to go over them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's sort of fuzzy now. I didn't even donate blood once a day before!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm. And you think you had several reasons for that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, like that it wasn't allowed, but it's only not allowed because it might be risky for me, it doesn't mean the blood's not perfectly good for whoever needs it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you figure out why you cared about it not being allowed before today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...not really. I'm generally pretty law-abiding but I don't think this is even a law."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to try guessing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...not especially."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Do you see how the fact that you can't remember reasoning you used before could lead to you making decisions that are suboptimal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess it could, yeah, that would be a problem if it mattered how reasonable I was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it is likely to, because you might make really bad decisions on accident."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could hurt yourself or other people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to hurt anyone!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Um. I think it is possible for you to end up hurting someone badly on accident while you are awakening. So I'd like you to stay at my place and if I ask you not to do things I'd like you to listen to me even if you can't follow my reasoning. How does that sound to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that's what you'd like me to do sure!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think you're capable of remembering this? For the entire week?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't see why I'd forget."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, I'm worried it won't occur to you when it's important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess if there were an emergency I might be distracted by that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm, and I'm worried you'll hurt someone if that comes up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to hurt anyone!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm. That's why I'm thinking you should leave dealing with emergencies to other people this week."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to go looking for emergencies on purpose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm worried you'll incorrectly identify something as an emergency."

Permalink Mark Unread

........yeah she's not sure what to do with this worry. She can look sympathetically at him?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you okay with promising that you'll let other people deal with emergencies that come up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure that would make sense in all possible emergencies!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sort might it miss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I don't know, but emergencies emerge and aren't always foreseeable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, I'm worried this'll result in you hurting someone on accident because you think something is an emergency when it isn't, or it is but you're not thinking clearly enough to help instead of hurt someone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I'm going to hurt anyone..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, I think some of the reasons you don't normally donate blood twice in one day are because it could hurt people and I'm worried about how you can't guess those reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The blood is totally fine!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm, the blood being bad isn't the way I'm worried you could have hurt people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's really fun to confuse me I guess you can keep doing it?" she says plaintively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not trying to confuse you, what part of that was confusing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're saying that isn't the answer you're fishing for but you aren't telling me what you do want me to say instead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not fishing for an answer - I can tell you how I think you were making a mistake earlier if you'd like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blink blink.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lorica are you... aware of what your preferences are about things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...what my preferences are about things? I can... remember my usual Chinese takeout order, if that's the kind of thing you mean..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That helps. Do you understand why it was your usual Chinese takeout order?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exactly, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm... so that's a second thing you're having trouble reasoning about while you're awakening." And a complicated one given that it means she probably isn't capable of meaningully consenting to a lot of forms of guiding.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could guess if you want me to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's not stressful that would be good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...why only if it's not stressful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because I don't want to stress you out unnecessarily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because I value you having positive experiences and not negative ones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The thing where you're touching me is a positive experience," she reports after a few moments to piece this together.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah uh, we should probably have more skin contact since it will help with your backlash."

Permalink Mark Unread

She has grabbed the hem of her shirt by the end of the first clause and then stopped in confusion about the second.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hrm - is there any chance you know whether you would have been comfortable with us cuddling in our underwear yesterday, before you started awakening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I wouldn't have, but that was different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...because it wouldn't have been a positive experience then!" she says after a moment of thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm happy that you can notice that - do you have a grasp as to why it wouldn't have been positive? Aside from the lack of guiding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...that seems like the main difference to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... okay. Um. Lia?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm?" comes Lia's voice from the kitchen, where she has been gathering up anything dangerous to be hidden away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You been listening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have thoughts on what I should do about guiding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Both of you topless, with her bra still on, seems like it'll only be a bit awkward and definitely worth it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think?" Lucian asks Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you're both putting things in a kind of puzzling way but if that's what Lia wants and it's fine with you I don't mind!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien sighs and unbuttons his shirt.

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems like approval for her to take hers off!

Permalink Mark Unread

And they can hug like so and Lucien will ignore the feeling that he's taking advantage of Lorica because while it might be true it's not actually the most important thing going on here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica relaxes into the cuddle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Better than her not relaxing, he supposes. He tags her every once in a while so long as they're touching.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has no sensory experience of this so she doesn't comment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well she might feel the slightest shock but it's super easy to miss. After a while of guiding Lucien is going to broach the topic of blood donations again.

"- and my mom is a universal donor so you can get a transfusion from her without needing to go anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...she can just donate blood at the blood drive, though? It's not that I don't want to go places, it's that I don't want to take somebody's blood that could go to another person. Her being a universal donor makes it worse, not better!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'd prefer to donate to you - I'd really like it if you accepted. I don't think you're reasoning clearly about the tradeoffs here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will do a lot of things for you but I don't know about taking somebody's blood! Sometimes people die if they can't get a transfusion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to insist but I would really like you to trust me on this one - maybe you can donate it back to the blood bank at the end of the week or something." Though probably not and Lucien feels bad for implying it's possible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think they'll let me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that might be true. I'd still really like you to accept the blood."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she's tensing up a lot, is that what he was going for?

Permalink Mark Unread

No!

"I'm sorry I can drop it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggly relaxing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, there is dinner and iron supplements for Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

She... eats, though she looks sort of embarrassed about it, and if anyone else at the table finishes their meal first she scoops some of hers onto their plate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was going to go get seconds."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, that's allowable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good.

"You want seconds too?" Lia asks when Lorica has finished her meal.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it stresses Lorica out to try to figure out a preference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- I don't think all preferences, but maybe most of the ones where you'd bother asking about them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are the other sort?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like I'm not having trouble deciding which side of my mouth to chew on or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that's good at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it'd be really rude if I just stared at the food you gave me and couldn't figure out how to eat it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien resists the urge to facepalm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia doesn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can avoid asking you questions but if you have a preference that you notice please do tell me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Um, I think you should stay the week at my place and hang out and I'll guide you like we've been doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Why's it called guiding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's because one person is guiding the other out of backlash, but I'm sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've heard that Susan Guide was an early esper."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds maybe made up?"

Lucien can google this.

"Okay there was a Susan Guide but people think the term predates her awakening by at least two years. The etymology I gave is also a popular suggestion but there's no specific evidence in favor of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh."

Snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

And after a while: "Maybe you should try reading over that journal you've been keeping - Lia can pick it up from your place and bring it here? Along with clothes and things for you to spend the week."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I can go pack, she doesn't have to," says Lorica, trying to get up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like you to stay here so we can guide each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits back down. ".......you could come with me?" she offers after a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd rather not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have a key Lorica?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here you go!" She hands it over.

Permalink Mark Unread

And off Lia goes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien is content to cuddle Lorica but does eventually need to use the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wouldn't dream of stopping him.

Has anyone confiscated her phone?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, he didn't think of doing that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does anyone on Twitter need anything? She's out of money but maybe someone needs something else!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sometimes people still message her rather than using her online store. There's a request for two leaves and another for live capture of one of the snakebundle creatures.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leaves first, that's easy. Pop!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep there sure are easy to acquire leaves here!

Permalink Mark Unread

Leaves, leaves, leaves. The best and most representative leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she's acquired quite a bit more than two she feels a pulling and turns translucent, moving kata toward Lucien's dimension.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where she finds herself next to a very distressed looking Lucien, who rapidly re-tags her.

"Where-you went to get leaves???"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, some people want them - are you okay -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really - I came out of the bathroom and couldn't find you anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no, I'm sorry!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why did you leave?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To get the people who wanted leaves some leaves..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. Normally if someone awakening was a danger to themselves they could, in the worst cases, go to a mental hospital where their options could be limited. However, there isn't actually a way to contain Lorica and some of the dimensions she can reach are extremely dangerous to spend even a little time in. He can pull her back as long as he's keeping her tagged, but if she went to the boiling water dimension he might not get her back before she hurt herself.

"Okay, I think you shouldn't use your power again until a week has passed, can you promise me that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"But there could be an emergency."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can tell me if there's an emergency. Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well of course I would try but that's not really how emergencies work! I don't have my old armor any more, if somebody breaks in and points a gun at me or something all I can do is disappear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you promise only to go to the void?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somebody wanted a snakeball."

Permalink Mark Unread

Which would be in the boiling water dimension.

"Yes this would cover not getting that this week."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But what if they really need it for something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please Lorica."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well now she's crying!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no this is horrible and what if he hugs her for some time about this.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will eventually stop crying when he stops asking her to promise not to help people who ask her for stuff for long enough! The hug might also help.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll stop asking.

Though when Lia comes home he is going to go into a corner and have a quiet conversation with her without letting Lorica out of his sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica will wait innocently on the couch looking at her phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Lorica there's this cool trick with my blood I've always to wanted to try - could we do a two way blood transfusion? I wouldn't lose any blood and we'd both get some guiding out of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't actually know what Nikki's blood type is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hospital said A positive. I'm A negative but my power can deal with incompatible blood and the guiding from it will fix up any backlash."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...and you want to try this even though that will happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I like guiding and think it's cool that my power will let me do this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh thank god.

They can go to a hospital to get the two way transfusion going now - Lorica won't get more blood but the fluid guiding will hopefully help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica cooperates perfectly nicely with the two-way transfusion machine and peers at it curiously. She does occasionally glance nervously at Lia to make sure she is having a good enough time with this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien waits an hour for the guiding to get Lorica's backlash as far as down as it can go with the blood transfusion.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits there looking at her phone the whole time. Occasionally frowns when she passes donation requests but she's all out of money.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien aks her for her phone once he notices what she's looking at on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh sure he can have it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good. He would probably have insisted on taking it from her eventually but this way is so so much nicer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now she's just kind of sitting around bored.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want a pen and paper?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Journaling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I can't do that because I'd let you look at it if you asked so it won't work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't ask - does that fix the issue?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." Lucien can go back to waiting for the remaining fifteen minutes of the hour.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia texts him before the hour is up.

starting to build up backlash

think that Lorica is just giving me back my own blood

or my healing isnt keeping up with the transfusion

can still keep goin if its important though

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh, its close to maxed out impact I think anyways. If you can stick around while Lorica and I chat about plans that'd be good but don't need more of this if it's not going to be a long term option. Also I might have trouble finding time to guide you if you want more than skin contact.

Permalink Mark Unread

nw i can get a hookup

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Lorica, how are you doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good to hear - I think this is as low as we're going to get your backlash using this method so I wanted to talk about how we should handle the rest of your awakening while you are... as sane as you are going to get under the circumstances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, how do you want to do it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"I'm not sure - can you understand why I'm concerned about you using your power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I wasn't going to go to the hot world without the suit. I wouldn't be able to bring anything back that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad you can notice that that's what I was worried about - I'm worried that you won't think of a risk like that next time or you'll go exploring without a suit or something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you need me for something here I can stay here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you promise that? And hold to that promise even on more backlash?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...we already talked about that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, okay. I was hoping it'd go different when you had less backlash, since you seem more able to understand why you shouldn't do it."

He can keep tagging her but not while he's sleeping and she never did figure out how fast her power could go and whether it would get out of his range if she pushed it...

"I think it will probably be significantly safer for you to get more guiding than just us being shirtless was managing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...like the blood thing we're doing? I don't know how long it will keep being fun for Lia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we'll stop it after not too much longer I think - maybe we can try it again later but for now we need to figure out other routes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blink blink.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"The best route here is probably you having some of my bodily fluids inside you. This could look like us having sex, you drinking my urine, or something more medically complicated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to have sex with me you could have just said so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to have non-consensual sex with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, probably the hospital staff won't like it if we do it right here but once we have privacy I'm fine with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's ... good. But I still am worried that you are not capable of consenting while backlashed and if you weren't backlashed you'd object."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have guesses as to what you would have thought about having sex with me if I'd asked you before today and it was necessary for your safety?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it probably would have seemed really unlikely for it to be necessary for my safety. I was always pretty pro being safe when it didn't conflict with being a superhero though obviously not enough that I didn't die of being a superhero."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a guess as to whether you would prefer sex or drinking pee or other medical options if you weren't backlashed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"....well, I've never done either of those things before but one of them I wanted to get around to eventually and the other one I did not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know this is a very dumb question but just so I don't accidentally miss something. Which was the one you wanted to get around to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sex."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

"And do you think getting around to it in less than ideal circumstances would be okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine with it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think you would have been fine with it yesterday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well, I didn't have sex with you yesterday but I also didn't know you wanted to then, I guess I'm not sure how that would have shaken out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you knew I wanted to have sex with you, do you think you still would have been fine with doing it for safety reasons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would probably have wanted to think about it first but I can't do that now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you have things you would have considered when you thought about it that you can remember?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I thought about sex with you in particular?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought you were cute and you reminded me of the other Lucien who I also thought was cute but you didn't seem that interested and I wanted to have a whole romance which in my imagination was supposed to feature the boy being interested and then us falling in love or at least being obviously about to before any sex happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I am interested but under the circumstances we don't really have time for a whole romance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well that's okay, I'm fine with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think you would have been fine with it before? Or uh, more fine with it than the other options I mentioned "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, I didn't think about it then and can't now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Great.

"Do you have preferences between it and the other options now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well, you said you were interested and from context I think you probably meant the sex thing and not the pee thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was interested in sex with you previously but if you think both options are equally okay by you I might actually be leaning towards the pee one. Or mouth spitting, that would be almost as effective I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, well, I guess if you're not interested any more but it's important to you that one of the things happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"Yeah, it's important that one of those happen. I know it's hard but do you have a preference for which should happen, assuming I am okay with all of them. Or a guess as to your past selfs preference."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. He'd ask the doctors to help but he's really skeptical that a medical setting is a good one for Lorica to be in given her state - it seems possible she'd decide to leave just to avoid being a burden.

Eventually, Lucien returns home with her where he concludes that spitting in her mouth is probably the option that best maximizes guiding without being rapey.

Permalink Mark Unread

If that is what he wants to do she will cooperatively open her mouth and not make any facial expressions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well he hates this option as well but he's trying to minimize time between the fluid being in him and it being in Lorica and this seems like the least rapey way to do that and this whole experience sucks but he's not the one awakening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia walks in on them doing this.

"Oh for the love of god Lucien."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She didn't have a preference and I'm not just going to kiss her when there are other options!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're going with this even after she responds to it by looking like she's playing high stakes poker?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not really my business what facial expression she-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's your business! She's clearly still capable of actually having a good or bad time and you should be checking on this regardless of whether you're fucking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Lorica have you been having a good time with me spitting into your mouth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...am I supposed to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"... not particularly but guiding often is enjoyable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tell that it's guiding me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were you hiding your facial expressions on purpose or nah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... was trying to be polite?" she says tentatively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think that's helpful for Lucien right now. Do you know what you would have looked like if you weren't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I don't usually think about what my face is doing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Was it a nice experience or not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lucien, I love you and you can make your own decisions but you aren't always going to get an engraved invitation to kiss a backlashing esper."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"...Lucien you do know I'm much sluttier than most people. Right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kiss the girl. Or don't. But it's not actually a huge favor for you to just angst about this and then spit in her mouth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Um. Lorica. Do you object to me kissing you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Headshake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then he can try that!

Permalink Mark Unread

That's so much less repulsive and the guiding is better too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh wow.

"...you liked that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, then they can do more of that. And cuddle in their underwear in his room. And wow she really is incredibly compatible with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

(Does she need to like, ask some of her friends to fuck Lucien or something? This was ridiculous and maybe she's been spoiling him with her directness.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kissing turns out to be great actually and he'd feel weird about this but Lorica is so extremely obviously happier this way than with the alternatives.

Permalink Mark Unread

The alternatives sucked! This is instead kissing a cute boy, an activity she wanted to get around to eventually!

Permalink Mark Unread

It is rather reassuring when she smiles at him like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Maybe she should hook up with Lucien while gagged? Would that help him learn that there are other cues about whether someone is enjoying something?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica is not going to be the person who interrupts this snuggly makeout to request food or anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Lucien will eventually notice what time it is.

"Oh, we should get food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien can poke his head out of the room.

"Hey Lia can you order us something for dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, also which of these three gags do you like best?" she asks, holding up her laptop screen.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"... I'll order the food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

And back in he goes to Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gags?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what she was thinking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to kiss me some more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kissing!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kissing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pizza ordered.

(Seriously, you'd think Lucien was the one with backlash that prevented him from figuring out his preferences! Maybe she needs to get one of her friends to wear the gag... okay maybe she should do that for reasons unrelated to Lucien's hangups.)

Permalink Mark Unread

When it is pizza time Lorica will eat pizza.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You two having fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blink blink.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to hear."

Permalink Mark Unread

And Lucien and Lorica can return to the room soon after pizza for more kissing.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's nice that she can be helpful in this uncomplicated and pleasant way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia eventually decides on a gag to order.

"Hey you two want me to join in?" she asks from the other side of the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, Lorica were you attracted to Lia previously?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm straight, but if she wants to and you want to -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd rather just stick with the two of us."

He lets Lia know this as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Works fine for her too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually it is bedtime.

"If there's an emergency I can probably help with it and so you should wake me up. That make sense?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good.

He feels honestly quite a lot better with how this ended up than he expected which is probably a sign that he's a bad person but for now he is too tired to worry about that anymore.

Permalink Mark Unread

They have a few very kissy days. It's not totally impossible to reason with her about what she wants like this - if someone announces that they're totally indifferent between two things but need to make a decision and want her help, she'll pick one; she's always ready to tell people she's not mad at them for doing basically anything to her, but will only sometimes independently announce that it was probably a good idea (taking her phone, for example, was probably a good idea); trying to get her to think of her unbacklashed self as a different person she needs to help doesn't really work, because she has continuity of identity, but it does basically work to ask her to come up with policies that would help other awakening espers with psychological backlash profiles resembling hers in some ways.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's consistent on asserting that she would not have wanted to be backlashed. But that's not surprising, if you've met her. She doesn't have to do any original thinking on the subject to come to that conclusion.

After all, Lorica means "armor". She chose the name before she built the scale mail suit. Because people say "body armor", and they mean it in contrast to, say, "tank armor", but she always wondered, is there "mind armor". And there is, and she has -

- had. She had it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Obviously it's gone now.

She has a new power instead of her old one. Her old ones.

She's unarmored and something got her.

And it'll wear off at the end of the week, yippee, but that's not the important thing. The important thing is -

Permalink Mark Unread

They usually just kill people who trigger during Simurgh attacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they're not wrong to do it. The Simurgh damages people, and she's a precog, and she plays a long game, and Lorica's -

- Bella's -

- been to more than her share of Simurgh battles, hiding under her armor, believing herself safe. But what if psychic damage was clinging to her, waiting, biding its time, turning her into a time bomb the instant she perished on the field and woke up in another body with another power?

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien won't believe her if she explains. He'll think this is her backlash in a new form, demanding self-sacrifice, but all the backlash is doing is demanding that she look right at the risk she's imposing on everyone in this innocent world to which no end has yet been brung. This is established policy straight out of the handbook from back home. They only let her live because nothing got through her armor, because every test they threw at her after London got the same result: impervious. Like she's not even there. Can't even tell they were trying to do anything. The Simurgh song is just annoying music.

She's not impervious now. The backlash got in. And Lucien won't understand, so - she can't try to explain.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits till he's asleep.

She vanishes out of his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's sort of obvious when someone that compatible stops cuddling with you, but it still takes him almost a minute to wake up.

Fuck he can't feel her tag it's been more than a few hours. Is she in the apartment - no, no, and no. And the windows haven't been opened and the front door door is still fully locked which isn't possible from the outside without a key. He should have gone with the waking up every two to retag her and kept someone in the room to watch her he was an idiot.

"Lia wake-up Lorica's gone I have no idea what to do can you. I don't know. Tweet asking if there's a dimension hopper esper or something who can help us I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes she can do that and also hug Lucien at the same time.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her a little while to work up to it. She waits in the void just one hop away from the esper world, thinking it over. She's guided enough to be afraid to die, and also she might still have the Butcher-power, since that's the one that carried her here. But if she shows up back in Bet where more people trigger as capes instead of the freak accident of Nikki - she'll have killed someone like she killed Nikki, but they'll know what to do with a Simurgh-touched cape who can't just be executed, there. And it might be a one-time thing, just like her armor was. And the damage, if the Simurgh did get her, did sing poison onto her protective shell in anticipation of the day that shell would collapse, would be so much worse than one death -

She forges ahead to the boiling sea, resigned.

It hurts, it hurts more than she was expecting, Leviathan was so quick it didn't hurt at all but this is -

- not the boiling world, she's in a void.

Why does it hurt. She did not get all the way to the boiling world.

...what the fuck was she thinking trying to kill herself without sitting with a notebook first. She could've done that while Lucien was asleep and then shredded the pages -

Why does it hurt!

She flings herself back into the apartment and collapses bonelessly to the floor and shrieks: "HELP!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia is the one of them with experience inside dungeons. She knows first aid for... she's not sure what, there are no marks on her.

"What hurts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everything -" She coughs, at first dry and then more of a hacking wheeze. She clings to Lia far more agentically than she did over the past several days.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lucien kiss her now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wha-

Permalink Mark Unread

No actually Lucien doesn't get to hesitate about this she can knock him off his feet from where she is leaning by Lorica and then grab his head before it collides with Lorica's chest and smush it against Lorica's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well apparently he's kissing Lorica right now!

Permalink Mark Unread

She was an amenable but passive kisser before, reluctant to act on the sensation that it was healing her. No longer. The instant his lips contact hers she's got her tongue in his mouth and she's clinging to him with all her limbs as hard as she can, whimpering in pain and relief from pain at the same time.

Permalink Mark Unread

... Yeah she's going to need more than that.

"Lucien stop for one second and look at me and I'm going to punch you and go back right after."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Lia socks him in the mouth, breaking several teeth.

"Back to kissing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well now he's kissing and there's a decent amount of blood involved.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Swallow." Lia directs Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

...that's a bewildering thing to have happen but okay!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica seem to be stabilized or does Lia need to go down the list on ways to get fluids into her.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a little hard to assess her state while she's making out with Lucien as hard as she can! Her heartbeat is still wildly erratic, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien is still going to be much better for her than Lia can manage so Lia flips herself up and into a run to the kitchen where she grabs supplies. She's back in under three seconds.

"Mind the pain, don't bite her tongue or stop what you're doing."

And then Lucien can get his index and middle fingers sliced open and shoved inside of Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is kind of stupid compared to Lia just sitting down so Lorica can be in her lap while continuing to make out with Lucien and have more of her skin in contact with compatible people but telling her that would involve ceasing to kiss Lucien for two seconds so Lia has time to have one more stupid idea before Lorica musters the wherewithal to demand it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia is nowhere near as compatible as Lucien but that is in fact next on the list, since it would probably be a bad idea to get more fluids out of Lucien right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh thank god. Lorica sits on her and pulls Lucien after her. She will, dimly, try to leave Lia's hands free in case she wants to get a good idea like calling an ambulance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guiding quickly is definitely more important than an ambulance here but once she is convinced Lorica isn't imminently going to die she will dash off to get her phone and call an ambulance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica certainly hopes that's what she's doing! Why is Lia a crazy person, she shouldn't even be backlashed right now!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, has Lorica's heart decided to beat less like she's mid-heart attack?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really! Which is a problem for which you want an ambulance!

Permalink Mark Unread

Backlash is much more curable by guiding than anything an ambulance has. Except for whatever Lorica has apparently, which was acting like backlash but isn't fucking going away.

Next up she will in fact call an ambulance, and while she's explaining the situation she can use a large knife to cut two of her own fingers most of the way off.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good thing Lorica can't see her doing that because she would actually tear herself away from Lucien to tell her off about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well she is probably going to notice eventually considering where the finger stumps are going.

Permalink Mark Unread

She notices that but still optimistically assumes something saner than what Lia actually did is occurring. "AMBULANCE," she shouts anyway in a slurred rush before she returns her mouth to its essential business.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes it's coming"

She is on the phone and explaining things right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Everything hurts except touching these people. Why does everything hurt. She doesn't understand what's happening to her.

Ambulance is on its way.

"Yes thank you oh also do you think it would be possible to give someone a blood transfusion with a funnel and a knife? I know where the heart is and my power means I'll be fine but I'm guessing that wouldn't be safe for her and I should do like, stomach or into her ass or something?"

"No it seems like it's stopped getting better more or less but I figure this is still the best bet? ... I can wait for the ambulance if you're sure. Okay. Yes, okay got it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What the fuck is wrong with you," back to kissing Lucien.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't stop kissing him! And you need guiding and I am running out of ways to give you significantly more. But the doctor thinks we shouldn't risk anything else without like, medical supplies given that you aren't improving."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

Permalink Mark Unread

But Lia will hold off on trying to figure out where to put the funnel.

(Well, that's not true. But she won't act on the thoughts.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The paramedics force the door. They get all three espers in a pile onto the stretcher and into the vehicle, with a blanket draped over the lot of them against the prying eyes of the neighbors. One of them is very distracted by Lia's finger situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean if you have a better way to transfer blood please go ahead - I won't expire from donating it though you'll probably only get a dribble if you drain me fully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have the esper blood circulator at the hospital, and now we can't use it, because you've probably got yourself a ghastly blood infection and just because it can't hurt you doesn't mean it can't hurt her!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh I can stop if it's doing more good than bad - I don't get sick for anything short of a monster hitting me with something basically instant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know who you are and I know you won't get sick. But since there's possible gut flora in your bloodstream now, we can't put any of your blood in your friend here's veins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"I... think my body should get rid of that quick but I'm not sure. Also um, a few of Lucien's teeth are broken and his fingers inside of Lorica have shallow cuts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...well, let's hope we can get her stabilized before he needs emergency dental work. You're compatible with her, right, snuggle up on the side of her he's not occupying and get comfy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, she can do that.

"Should I take my hand out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They'll make you at the hospital but for now that's your lookout."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia takes her fingers out of Lorica.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica doesn't comment on this because that would involve delatching from Lucien.

When they take the blood pressure cuff off her arm it's left a nasty bruise.

They get them to the hospital and rushed inside under the privacy blanket and find her a doctor stat and the doctor starts asking about her symptoms, doing his best to stick to yes-or-no questions so he can get anything out of "mm-hm" and "nn-nn". He has no trouble at all getting her consent to a blood transfusion - he sends someone out to see if they can score the specific units she donated the other day for an absolute minimum of complication. He wants Lia's assessment, as a compatible esper in physical contact, of how much backlash she's got and whether it's going up or down. He wants a history, too, and Lia's the only one who can talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Higher than I've seen in someone except for her when she started awakening, it was higher earlier but it's barely falling anymore."

Lia can give what she knows of Lorica's history, which includes that Lorica is from another dimension and appeared in this body recently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So she shouldn't be done awakening yet, by rights - it's almost always seven days, if she's done this would be the shortest I ever heard of -" says the doctor -

Lorica extracts a hand from the cuddle pile to wave urgently.

"Lorica, you're very backlashed and need guiding more than -"

"Mmmmmmm!" says Lorica, making typey fingers, even though her joints are all inflamed like she's got the arthritis of someone five times her age, even though her muscles are all stabbing her with what might be lactic acid buildup or might just be stress tension, even though she's having to do all her breathing through her nose and her nose is by turns intolerably dry or clogged with panic-mucus, even though she feels like she's burning up with some sort of autoimmune fever. Her eyes are streaming, half her sweat glands have quit and the other half are overexcited, her ears are ringing, her teeth ache and her head is pounding and her skin is prickling like it's all in the process of committing post-sunburn suicide. Her gut has stopped cold and she's got a sharp cramp about it, her stomach is roiling, she's not sure she will not puke directly in Lucien's mouth, she's thirsty and faint and her heart rhythm is concerningly experimental, and pain, pain, pain, all over everywhere causeless sourceless pain -

But she is conscious. And she is sane.

The doctor gets the room's computer's keyboard within reach of her and she taps out one handed, pausing to shiver and to blink tears away so she can see where to place her fingers on the keys -

seconf trigggr. mental defense pwr

"- do you know what that means?" the doctor asks Lia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She has powers from her home dimension which she got from stress causing what they call a trigger event, so I guess she had a second one and got a mental defense power. Her backlash before was purely psychological as far as I can tell, maybe the new power covered it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Covered it," says the doctor. "Okay. When is she due to be done awakening, do you know." A nurse comes in with oxygen and gets Lorica a cannula, working tolerably well around her cuddle partners.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tuesday between 3 to 4pm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Dear lord. I'm putting her on dialysis, I want liquid nutrition and hydration for her on the assumption she can't take anything by mouth and the same for her partner she's kissing because I don't want him to let up, we'll keep her on oxygen, I'm putting in a catheter for her, the two of you I'm going to want to maneuver onto bedpans when you have to pee so I can irrigate her bladder with compatible urine without anybody having to get out of bed - do we have a temperature -"

"Hundred point six."

"Not as bad as it could be, cold IV might bring it down. It's going to be a nightmare to find a vein with her down two units of blood, get started on that, take one in her hand. Any joy on finding the Red Cross's units -"

"Not yet."

"Well, I want them, her immune function can't be good. Venture, anything else we need to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's already mentioned the blood donations and the IV for electrolytes and everything else she could think of...

"You can take whatever fluid from me you can use and I'll survive - maybe not from my brain - but other than that no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More important than that is going to be bringing up backlash on her - I presume more compatible, am I right that he's more compatible? - partner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, they were compatible from several paces away. He's Turnaround, can transport tagged people to him through obstacles and tags are contagious. Someone can touch him and tell him to tag them and then go far away and tap people twice and then he'll pull those people to him. He can typically handle a few dozen but is going to be hampered by his backlash making him think Lorica's condition is his fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- isn't there anything he can do that won't fill her hospital room with dozens of people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can be one person a bunch of times but otherwise nothing else to build up a lot of backlash."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is he going to do if he thinks it's his fault?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know - might try to get away from her if he thinks he's making her worse. Could be helpful to have someone from his support team on hand to tell him to not do anything, he's good at deferring to them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, you get ahold of them, then. They can double as people for him to haul around, if he interrupts a nurse when they're with another patient that could kill somebody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Also I am going to have trouble with talking without vomiting in a few hours if I don't get my finger reattached at all - tape should work. Or more guiding than I'm getting right now. Or I can vomit somewhere useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Venture, there is no useful place for vomit, she cannot possibly handle an infection right now and the acid wouldn't do her any favors either. If you need a bandage for your finger we have tape." Somebody runs off to fetch tape. "Do you need anything else? Turnaround, do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien can slightly shake his head without dislodging his mouth from Lorica's.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Over the next few minutes more tubes get attached to Lorica to compensate for all the failures of her various organs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien tries to figure out how to position his mouth and lips so this doesn't strain any muscles that aren't used to kissing someone for more than a minute or two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Active kissing is really impossible for this length of time and the passive state they wind up in is only marginally less gross than spitting into someone's mouth but she's in too much pain to care.

The hospital is not really set up for an endless parade of Lucien's support people fading in and getting fresh tags and running away to be pulled in again. They wind up moving Lorica to another room to accommodate it slightly less awfully, near the fire stairs, even though moving her and all her machines is a huge production. They find her donated blood, eventually, and put it back inside her body where it can be vanishingly unlikely to introduce any new pathogens or antigens that she might react badly to. There's a marathon of symptom management - some of the pain is probably just direct backlash but some of it might be downstream of other problems that are themselves direct backlash, but the when they get her to swallow ibuprofen she vomits blood - some of it's probably Lucien's, and Lia has to clarify that before they panic too much - and acetaminophen affects her liver biomarkers really badly, and they don't dare try anything stronger. The dialysis machine helps at the cost of making her sob with fatigue she feels too wretched to sleep off. None of these people are getting any sleep.

When she starts to improve beyond what they've been able to do with technology and partners, they start detaching her from things, one at a time. And people, one at a time. Lucien can go see the emergency dentist if he doesn't want to go directly home and sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Emergency dentist first, then sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you sure honey?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... Need teeth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes you do still have most of those and another day isn't going to ruin them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I." Lucien blinks for a second or two.

"Okay sleep first if you say so. But I shouldn't drive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

As it turns out Lucien's parents brought a car and can drive him home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lorica passes out once her backlash is no longer trying to pull itself up against the guiding. Before it's even very much better, the tiredness, which is very real and independent of the backlash, overwhelms all the magical problems.

The medics keep detaching her from things. They send Lia away.

She is going to sleep for twelve hours.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lia has been staying still for way way too long and she feels terrible and just... needs to be helpful to someone.

She finds the nearest dungeon that's comfortably within her capabilities and rescues captives till there isn't anyone left and then hunts down the core. Only after making sure everything is wrapped up there does she return to Lucien's place and collapse into bed with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Twelve hours later Lorica awakens. There's a fresh hospital gown for her to change into. There's what the hospital is for some reason legally allowed to call "scrambled eggs" and "toast".

There is not any paper. She was admitted without her clothes and without her phone on her and does the hospital have a way to contact Lucien?

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien's dad has in fact been in the waiting room for the past couple of hours.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, well, that'll also do, though it's pretty weird of him to be doing that. Can he go get her phone and a change of clothes out of her house so she can go home?

Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien took her phone while she was awakening and so Arthur has that as well as the clothes Lia picked up from Lorica's place when it seemed like she was going to spend the week at Lucien's. Arthur can also provide a ride - Lucien wanted to come pick her up and make sure she got home safely but was not exactly in a state to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can just take an Uber."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, if you'd rather - though it really wouldn't be any trouble." Here's her phone, clothes, and house key.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's going to go take a shower in the hospital bathroom and then get in the fresh clothes and then if he's still there she supposes he's not worse than an Uber driver in any important way.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is and is happy to drive her home.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not make conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fine by him, he's just here to make sure she doesn't have to find her own way home after what really sounds like it was a grueling hospital stay.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thanks him by rote and lets herself into her house.

It will take her kind of a while to make any motions in the direction of contacting either Lucien or Lia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Lia is sort of busy guiding, then sleeping, then going to another dungeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

But Lucien will eventually reach out to her.

Hey, dad told me you made it home okay.

Permalink Mark Unread
👍
Permalink Mark Unread

Let me know if you need anything.

Permalink Mark Unread
probably eventually I will decompress enough to want to test out my esper powers but not today
Permalink Mark Unread

K.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not the next day either.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's very reasonable. Lucien is up to do things the next but this turns out to just mean he hangs out with his parents and tries to get Lia to slow down with dungeons.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is how she is coping and she can guide with other people so he can have a break but she's not going to stop until everything feels better.

Permalink Mark Unread
if you have any questions about what the fuck was up with any of that which I might have the answers to now is an okay time
she eventually tells Lucien.
Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.
I guess I am mostly concerned about how you are doing? I don't know, awakenings are usually rough but I figure you had less context on that than most and also yours was unusually bad.

Permalink Mark Unread
I've been reading up on them now that I can do that
Permalink Mark Unread

Anything interesting? Or helpful?

Permalink Mark Unread
It's nice to have more context.
Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.
Is there anything I can explain about awakenings or what happened during your awakening in particular?

Permalink Mark Unread
I can remember it all. I'm not really clear on why you approached it how you did but I assume it was stressful and stuff and you couldn't assume anything I told you was legit.
Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah I was mostly trying to figure out how to manage you getting guiding without crossing any boundaries I shouldn't.
(Heads up that I'm burnt out on blaming myself for things about your awakening. If I come off as not caring about mistakes I made that's why.)

Permalink Mark Unread
Probably doesn't make sense to posmortem it in much detail. It'll never happen again if my second trigger's worth its salt.
I think it improved the dimension hopping power too.
Permalink Mark Unread

Oh cool, any idea how?

Permalink Mark Unread
I think I know which direction and how far away home is. So I'm going to be going soon.
Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, that's good. Want me to tag you beforehand?

Permalink Mark Unread
I won't have a way to signal you, will I? So that would only make sense if I were planning to come back whether I needed to or not.
Permalink Mark Unread

You can tap someone in a specific pattern and I'll sense it.
You're not planning on coming back?

Permalink Mark Unread
I can't take passengers so I can't exactly evacuate the place wait no

I can't take passengers but you maybe can
Permalink Mark Unread

Seems likely!

Permalink Mark Unread
I'll need to think about that, what's your bandwidth
Permalink Mark Unread

Depends on whether you are interested in guiding me? Though it won't be enough to evacuate entire cities even if you are, I think.

Permalink Mark Unread
Give me a range?
Permalink Mark Unread

Somewhere from thirty seconds to five minutes per rescue?

Permalink Mark Unread
I don't mean time per person, I mean people per day, with or without me being on your end for guiding.
Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe a couple hundred without you, a thousand with you? I'm just guessing though.

Permalink Mark Unread
Well then I guess at some point we should have some kind of relationship conversation. Though possibly not till I've caught up with my original Lucien.
Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Up to you? Normally I would assume you didn't want a relationship with me anymore but I've kind of had it hammered into my head that I can't trust my instincts about you disliking me.

Permalink Mark Unread
I am from a foreign planet where, when everything is going according to plan, relationship conversations come before and are in many circles even a prerequisite for spending lots of time making out. It can wait till you're not burned out or whatever though.
Permalink Mark Unread

I am not actually certain that my being burned out won't help with a relationship conversation if you are up to it.

Permalink Mark Unread
Why would that be?
Permalink Mark Unread

I've been told I am excessively likely to take things as signs someone doesn't like me and right now I am only going to do that if you're pretty explicit about it.

Permalink Mark Unread
fair as far as it goes but I think it would not be conducive to my decompressing if you conspicuously don't give a shit about having hurt me.
Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah that's reasonable, we can talk later than.

Permalink Mark Unread
I think I want to go home sooner than that. I'm gonna get my danger suit and come over for a tag, OK?
and I'll tap someone in some pattern to communicate whatever short list of things I might need to.
Permalink Mark Unread

Okay by me.
Also uh, just so you know - I do care about having hurt you, I'm just having trouble acting on it since I spent so long being told by my support not to act on backlash that was blaming me for everything that happened to you during your awakening and now I'm still adjusting back to being able to trust my thoughts about that sort of thing.

Permalink Mark Unread
yeah it makes sense, just, timing.

She's over with the danger suit a bit later, and some paper to write some pattern -> meaning correspondences on.
Permalink Mark Unread

Lucien can help come up with what meanings she might want to send.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly they just need "arrived safely, will return home under my own power eventually probably" and "pull me back" and maybe "pull this person I'm tagging back".

Permalink Mark Unread

They can figure out patterns for those.

"Um. Good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," she says, tucking the paper inside the Danger Suit.

And then she fastens it shut and flings herself into the void and beyond, faster, faster, faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's traveling kata this time, at first through a void larger than any of the ones she's visited before, and then past that dimensions start flickering by. Until, finally, she's home. Or in Earth Bet Jersey City anyways.
