...blinkblink.

Slowly, he unfreezes, letting his massive paw—easily twice the size of one of Maika's hands—touch the floor.

Maika goes back to his research.

With agonising slowness, the person creeps closer, one foot at a time, until he has the best view he can get of Maika without coming upstairs.

Pause.

Blink. A little slower than last time.

He shifts a little, rests his head on his...arms? front legs? Either way, the new position doesn't look much more comfortable than the last, but it seems intended to convey a deliberate relaxation.

Oh, good. He can stay there as long as he feels comfortable doing so. Maika is perfectly comfortable sitting here and blinking and otherwise not moving much.

And so they do that.

Every so often, a shiver of nervous tension runs through the not-a-lion's body, but he is otherwise still.

After some time, Maika decides to chance a tiny wave.

The other person startles a little; his head lifts and his ears, which had been creeping forward to a neutral position, flick backwards again for a second. He quickly relaxes again, giving Maika another slow, deliberate blink.

The not-a-lion returns to quietly watching.

Maika very deliberately turns his back on the not-a-lion.

Then he will not see what the not-a-lion does next.

He is undisturbed for a while.

He turns back around the next time he's at a decent stopping point.

Still there, but he's moved and is now draped over a deep blue chaise-longue. He looks up at Maika and blinks, the tip of his tail twitching lazily from side to side.

Maika blinks and holds his hand out.

The not-a-lion blinks back, but he doesn't move. He seems reasonably comfortable where he is.

That's fair. Maika retracts his hand after a couple minutes.

And they can sit in companionable silence for a while longer.

After about another hour, the not-a-lion stretches, with a full-body motion like a cat, and gets up to pace around the lower floor of the library.

Would being on the lower floor at some point be a good idea or a bad idea? Well, it doesn't matter right now either way. Right now the best plan is to just be nearby and not a threat.

The book the castle has been using to communicate with him is nearby if Maika wants to ask.

Yup, that seems like a good plan. Would being on the lower level seem threatening?

I don't think you ought to go down there now, but perhaps at some point when he's not there already? I'm not certain; I've never seen this exact scenario before.

What have they seen?

Most people are more scared of him than you are. They generally try to avoid him as much as possible.
