"Kyoko."

She offers her hand, with a sort of apologetic hesitation that calls to mind someone handing in a paper that was crumpled in the bottom of their bag.

Shaking hands while sitting on the floor halfway behind a potted plant is a little awkward, but she gives it a respectable try.

"It's really nice to meet you. You -- probably have networking and stuff to be doing."

"...do I have networking and stuff to be doing?"

"This counts."

"...I'm pretty sure this doesn't count. I don't have, like, a job or anything. And I don't know anyone."

"You're a mathematician."

"That's generous. I have a degree in math. A bachelor's degree."

"You made it four years in a normal college."

"...I mean, regardless of whether that's particularly impressive," and it's not, really, she made it through a program meant for people without half her advantages, "it really doesn't make me a useful person to network with."

(How do you go to conferences for twenty years and not understand networking?)

"...you're a person, and I'm talking to you."

...what's the construct's take on this.

"It's a step up," he agrees.

He's watching Camilla very, very carefully. A little suspiciously, even.

Possibly, she thinks, more people would talk to you if you didn't have an enormous construct bodyguard looming at all times.

"Fair enough, I guess. Do you have a talk picked out for the next session? I'm more or less throwing darts at the program here."

"Oh – the next one is mine. I think."

"...I definitely shouldn't make you late for it, then."

"If you wanted to," she says, and then hesitates, and then stands up, takes her bodyguard's hand.

She stands up, too.

"I promise not to pick any fights during Q and A. ...unless it's really called for."

"I have a control group."

"Then it will probably not be really called for."

"I hope not."

She's smiling, just a little, as Teddy leads her off towards the appropriate room.

Camilla follows.

(She's smiling a little, too. Even if today is a total loss otherwise and she ends up waiting tables or something, at least she made a friend.)

By the time they arrive (at a rather large hall), it's close enough to the wire that Kyoko has to go up and prepare right away.

She's uncomfortable and still until the moment the presenter clears away from the front of the room,

at which point she animates all at once.

She paces as she speaks, draws huge sweeping diagrams on the board at the front of the room that accumulate neat annotations over the course of the talk, populates the rest of it with figures from the notebook she's holding half-open in front of her.

She's been working on several potential treatments for the cornea specifically, and Camilla won't recognize half the substances she names but might appreciate the sheer number of eyeballs she's dedicated to the task.

Camilla does her best to follow along, taking notes on things to ask Kyoko about later if Kyoko is inclined to explain her field in very small words.

(She allows herself the brief distraction of looking over to watch the construct watching Kyoko.)
