...well, now he's even more red than before, but his hair is fixed.

"...thank you."

"...do you have a horse?"

"Not at the moment, I'm afraid. I've mostly hitch-hiked."

“You’ll want to rent one.”

She glances at Kyou.

“...we can wait another minute.”

“...I’ll try to be quick. Might I impose on one of you to come with me? I don’t know horses, they’ll pass off a lame one on me.”

"I could go with you."

"If you go back in there we'll never fucking get out. I know horses, I can go."

"...I'm not saying that's a bad idea, but you made the dealer cry last time."

"Did he get a worse price for it?"

"He got a discount, but we can't go back now."

"Well. I'm not planning to go back."

"I'm good with directions. And it's faster."

"I didn't intend to laugh at you," he remarks, abruptly, a minute later.

...he doesn't say anything, yet. But he looks up, pays attention.

"I don't claim to know anything about gods, or what they might or might not do. I laughed because I thought he was making a joke, no more than that."

"I'm sorry."

(It's not that he has particularly many feelings about the affair. But he didn't mean to laugh at him, and alienating someone he's going to travel with, someone who's choosing to be helpful beyond any call of duty, over nothing at all -- it's not prudent.)

"...how do you sign up to serve the rest of your life and not know anything about gods?"

It's delivered in much the same way a person would normally say 'thank you'.

"It seemed like a way to find out."

"...surprised you picked that one, then."

"Wasn't my first choice. Nor yet my last."

“...who was?”
