Azan wins the war and now Maki has a chance to talk to that slave he liked the look of.
And eventually he mentions that he'd like it if Valan would come spend some time with him.
Valan asks when.
"Of course. In the evening?"
"I'll see you then."
Maki touches his cheek briefly. "See you then."
He'll just spend the time until then trying to care less about it.
Maki comes to find him the next evening.
He's indifferent to that. Sort of. It doesn't feel like it's happening to him anyway.
"You're ready now?"
"Mhm. Are you?"
Then they can start heading towards Maki's home.
That's very good. He listens intently to the sounds around him.
"Are you okay?"
"...I don't know what you're asking."
"I can take you back to the library if you want."
Is that a threat? What does he have to do to be allowed outside?
"...Sorry, did I do something wrong?"
"No. You just don't have to do this if you don't want to."
"I said you don't have to do this if you'd rather not."
"...Do you care what I want?"
"Of course I do. You're my responsibility."
"In what way?"
"I'm in charge of you. It's my job to make sure you stay safe."
