Sprout in the morning! Nyokimon appears!
baby Digimon Lucy meets the world
Permalink Mark Unread

It's a hatching day in Primary Village! What new friends will hatch today?

Permalink Mark Unread

An egg wobbles, cracks, falls over, and then finally breaks apart, revealing a dark blob with little leaves.

...Woooooow. This isn't the inside of an egg at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

If it was, it would have to be a very large egg. There's a wide field of green grass, with colorful shapes dotted about it which might be more eggs. In the far distance are larger shapes, and up above there's a blue and white sky.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gosh!!! So many things!!!

She hops towards the nearest colorful shape.

Permalink Mark Unread

It wobbles in place, as though to say hello.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh! Ooh!

What happens if she does not stop when she reaches it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bop! She hops right up to the shape and bounces off it, causing it to roll back and then forward again.

It follows this with a double wobble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gosh!!!

She hops at it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bop roll roll wobble wobble! Wiggle wobble crack!

There's now an irregular fault line running up and across.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey! Her egg did that! And now she is out here, where there's so much stuff!!!

She hops at the colorful thing again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Crash! The egg caves in, bits of shell falling all around. She tumbles into the middle, bumping up against another blob.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another blob??? :DDD

Permalink Mark Unread

"Puu pu," it says. She's got it kind of squished upside down and sideways into the shell, with its wings underneath it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops away from the blob. "Nyo!" she chirps excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pu," it accedes, righting itself. It hops out after her, floating more gently to the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whooooah.

"Nyoki!" she says, hopping vertically and wiggling her leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

The leaf-wiggling doesn't do much to augment her jump (yet growth mindset), but it does get the translucent blob to hop vertically and wiggle its wings with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

She hops and wiggles some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

It copies her again, slower than her due to its floatiness.

(A ways off, more eggs are hatching.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits for it to land before hopping again.

Permalink Mark Unread

In this manner they can try various hops, until the point at which rather than copy her, the translucent blob starts eating the grass.

She might be hungry by now, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! What is this bizarre sensation.

She decides to copy the other blob and also try eating grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

The grass tastes light and leafy, with the feeling of a breeze lifting your leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!!! What a GOOD TASTE. She happily munches grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the two blobs can munch grass together, for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few minutes, a metal, blob-shaped creature comes zig-zagging through the grass, and bumps nose-first into her. It beeps "choro," backs up a length, and resumes, bumping into her again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoah.

She...isn't sure she likes being bumped into?

Next time it tries it she will HOP.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops over its ears!

She lands on its rigid tail, flipping it over sideways and throwing her landing off somewhat as well.

"Choro. Choro," it beeps plaintively, from its position balanced on side, ear, and tail.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Oops.

She attempts to nudge it over and upright.

Permalink Mark Unread

With a little experimentation she can figure out where to throw her weight to flip it back over.

"Choro," it beeps, and it rolls on the way it had been going.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

She eats some more grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grass! Delicious grass! Over enough grass the airy taste goes down, but the fresh taste persists.

Eventually the winged blob leaves off eating and starts hopping again, flapping its wings.

Permalink Mark Unread

The airy taste was the BEST PART, though. Once the airy taste goes away she starts hopping and wiggling again too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her leaves must be bigger now, or they catch the air better - she can nudge herself around in the air with them! They can get her some more height and air time, or she can push herself to the side of where she had been going to land.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! She will hop SO HIGH.

Permalink Mark Unread

Had to have high, high hops for a living. Didn't know how but I always had a feeling, I was gonna be that one in a million. Always had high, high hops.

(It hops along with her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She LIKES hopping!!! Hop hop hop.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her hopmate experiments with variety in hops - long hops, sideways hops, hops with flips.

(Around them, eggs continue to hatch, and other blobs try other explorations.)

Permalink Mark Unread

After a while, another blob comes hopping up. It's round and yellowish, with a big fin on its head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another blob!

She cannot flip, but she can do a sort of welcoming sideways hop?

Permalink Mark Unread

It hops up and bites one of her leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! She does not LIKE being BIT.

She wiggles her leaves furiously to dislodge the biter.

Permalink Mark Unread

The finned blob, knocked back, giggles "bububu." It goes in for another bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

No!!! She will HOP ON TOP OF IT.

Permalink Mark Unread

This knocks the blob back and squishes it somewhat. It hesitates a moment, then bounces off crying.

Permalink Mark Unread

...That's not fair. It bit her, she was just defending herself!!! Why is it crying?

...

...

She hops off after it.

Permalink Mark Unread

A much bigger red creature walks up alongside her, matching her pace and keeping out of its paw range.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she reaches the crying finned blob she bites a piece of grass off the ground and nudges it towards it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sobbing creature takes a moment to notice, but when it does it looks up and hesitantly nibbles at the offering. Then it cheers up somewhat and continues eating grass.

"Tsubu," it says.

Permalink Mark Unread

(The red creature watches at a distance, still and low. The floaty blob is nowhere nearby; presumably the chase left it behind.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyoki!" she says brightly, then turns back to...

...

Where is floaty friend?

...Floaty friend is not here. She must have gone a ways.

Whoah! Big person???

She hops up to the larger creature. "Nyoki!" she chirps.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello to you too, seedling! It's nice to meet you. I'm Elecmon, I guard this place."

After greetings, it continues, "That was a very thoughtful thing you did for Tsubumon there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyo," she nods solemnly. It was crying! That was bad!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to help me with another problem?," he asks conspiratorially.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kiki!" she says excitedly, perking up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a little ’mon around here who is very shy and doesn't like to show herself around others, especially big or loud ’mon. If I pointed her out to you, would you be willing to make sure she has some snacks available every now and then, in case she gets hungry and doesn't want to come out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ki! Ki!" She bounces slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look over there and you might just see her tail," Elecmon says, pointing with a claw. Indeed, she might see just a bit of yellow poking out from behind a rock.

Permalink Mark Unread

She plucks several pieces of grass with her mouth and hops over to the little yellow tail.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can find the rock, which does indeed have a little tail poking out from behind. But hopping around the rock doesn't reveal any owner of the tail - they seem to keep just out of sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets the grass down and hops backwards a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

The grass stays put. The tail twitches slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks about this, then firmly closes her eyes for several seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

By the time she opens them, the grass has been snatched up. The tail is in a different position, and the scene is otherwise unchanged.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mission success!!!

She hops away delightedly to see what else will happen. Maybe she will find floating friend again! Or someone else! Maybe if she's very lucky she will find a new mission.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now that she's hopped over near the edge of the field, she's close to a colorful plant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Out in the middle of the field, two blobs seem to be circling each other and occasionally making a lunge, but mostly not connecting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Or this egg seems to be shaking a fair amount without actually opening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh! Oh! She hops towards the egg determinedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It continues wobbling, to no obvious effect.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops into the egg.

Permalink Mark Unread

The egg rolls back with the impact, then returns and continues to wiggle, showing no visible mark.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops into it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Same result. This egg is less cooperative than the yellow and black one.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

She attempts to hop on top of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can impact the top of the egg! Then she tumbles down one side and the egg rolls to the other.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can tumble down a different side, but she cannot produce a crack.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

She considers this, then hops over to the two circling blobs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Chiii KO!," says the blue one, launching a spinning kick hop at the orange one's side. The orange blob turns to face the blue one's new location, incidentally placing her right in its line of sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyoki!" she chirps to the two of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't much notice her at first, being caught up in… whatever it is they're doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can wait. Patiently. And eat some more grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

The two blobs continue performing various athletic maneuvers of unclear purpose. The grass continues to taste like grass, which is to say fresh and restorative but no longer exciting.

If she pays attention and chirps again when they're between maneuvers, she can get their attention properly onto her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does chirp periodically when they look like they might look her way!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then after a bit, they'll notice her persistence and turn to see what she's about.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyo," she says, and gestures with her leaves at the still unhatched egg.

Permalink Mark Unread

They hop over towards the indicated egg. The blue one tries mirroring its wobbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops into the egg again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hop! Hop! One at a time they copy her.

Permalink Mark Unread

This pushes the egg around in a little circle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops over to the other side of the egg and attempts to hop into it at the same time one of the others is doing so from the other side.

Permalink Mark Unread

A firm impact and a visible crack!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes!!! She does it again!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cracks spread across the surface of the wiggly egg!

Permalink Mark Unread

A squishy white blob bursts out and flops on the grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyoki! Nyonyokiiiii!" she says, hopping excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"poyooo~," it says, raising a tired bit of its edge in acknowledgment, then resumes its rest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Job apparently complete, the orange blob moseys off toward one of the colorful plants.

Permalink Mark Unread

The blue blob, on the other hand, noses up to the white one and starts prodding it inquisitively.

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers this, then plucks several stalks of grass and lays them within easy nomming range of the white blob.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yoyo," it says, gratefully. A minute later it picks itself up enough to start munching, still ignoring the blue blob's investigations.

Permalink Mark Unread

She eats companionably with the white blob, occasionally plucking another piece of grass and nudging the food in range of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

As it eats it perks up, and makes more appreciative noises. It also gains the energy to kick halfheartedly at the blue blob.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who, undeterred, attempts to hop on top.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no. Hopping on people never ends well!!! She attempts to knock the blue blob off-course by hopping at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Stop! You must not hop on top.

The blue blob is knocked from its course! "Chico," it says crossly, turning to face her.

Then it starts in on what looks like one of its athletic maneuvers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyo," she says apologetically. "Nyo~okiiii." She mimes hopping, then squishes down and hops a few hops away, making a crying face. "Nyo."

Permalink Mark Unread

It stops its maneuver and plops down. This strange behavior might take some pondering.

After a bit it says "Chico?" Then it does a big hop in place, hops three paces away and makes a sad face, and looks back inquisitively.

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers this.

After a moment, she plucks two pieces of grass, and makes each one of them hop in place for a bit. Then she hops one of them onto the other, then mimes the one hopped onto running away crying.

Permalink Mark Unread

It ponders this for a minute, then scrunch nods a couple times - "Chico, chico!"

It grabs a pebble in its mouth, flicks it up in the air, and stands underneath. Once the pebble bounces off its head, it makes an exaggerated show of rolling backwards with a crying face.

Then it sits up and makes an inquisitive noise?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyo!" she bobs in agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

It scrunch-nods again and hops industriously off in another direction, leaving her alone with the significantly recovered white blob.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kiiiii," she sighs, and nudges the grass pieces towards Poyomon, then munches some more herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

After some continued eating, it solemnly says "Poyo poyo," rises to its feet wiggly parts, and watches her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyoki," she says happily. "Kiki nyoooo~" She looks around.

Permalink Mark Unread

By now, all the eggs she can see have hatched, and various babies are hopping about or nibbling on things.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are more colorful plants - this low, red and green one seems popular.

Permalink Mark Unread

A floral creature seems to be leading some sort of wordless singing group.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a black blob is hopping up in the air, over and over, towards a flying creature which is always just out of reach.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. Hmmmm. So many things.

She takes a few hops in the direction of some fruits, then turns back and looks at Poyomon, hesitating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poyomon is following by scrunching along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay!!!

She hops the rest of the way to the fruits, pausing every so often to make sure Poyomon is keeping up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she and Poyomon will arrive at the fruits! Several blobs are here eating the red fruits; the leaves seem less popular. There's plenty of room to join them in eating, if she likes.

Permalink Mark Unread

One fruit-eater is a familiar face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyoki!" she says to Tsubumon, then bites a fruit off the thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

It bursts in her mouth with flavor, sweet and juicy and layered with the assurance that things are going to turn out just fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubumon returns her greeting with a "’Tsu," then gets back to supplementing his fruit with a side of greens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poyomon follows her lead in tasting a berry, then bounces with a "Poyo poyo!" and has another.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh wow!!! This fruit tastes so good!!! She has some more, yum.

Permalink Mark Unread

It won't take very many berries before she's feeling pretty full. The berries are still tasty, but it's getting harder to eat them.

She could make herself keep eating, or she could break off and do something else. Or... there's some sort of thing she could do to stretch bigger? Maybe?

Permalink Mark Unread

If she were BIGGER she could fit more GOOD FRUITS. She will get BIGGER.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Digimon! D-D-Digimon!)

She starts to glow with a bright light, and lifts into the air. Her leaves merge into one, large and swept back.

("Nyokimon! Digivolve to...!")

She expands to maybe half again her former size, as her one leaf moves to her back. Techno music might be playing from somewhere.

(Digital monsters! Digimon!)

Her clear skin fills in an opaque, leafy green, with a few rays of light shining out a symmetrical pattern of holes; those holes then fill in with fresh, green-brown thorns, as she touches back down to the ground.

("Budmon!")

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh wow!!!

She experimentally wiggles her leaf.

Permalink Mark Unread

It wiggles, and pushes air around besides! It's quite good at catching the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poyo!," her friend exclaims. Several other blobs have paused eating to stare as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee! She hops and wiggles her leaf some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can push herself around in the air quite easily with it. If she holds it right she can even glide, covering more horizontal distance than vertical.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! That is so cool.

She attempts to use this fantastic new ability to eat HIGHER FRUITS.

Permalink Mark Unread

That plant doesn't really have anything outside of her previous reach, but there's another plant here supported by a wooden lattice, with fruit clusters up off the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm she will try one of those.

Permalink Mark Unread

With her new leaf skills, it's a simple matter to hop up onto the trellis and bite a fruit off a cluster. It bursts with tangy juice-and-flesh and the flavor of having a thick sturdy shell, with her thorns sharpened to needle points so that no one can come close enough to hurt her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh! How peculiar.

She can't think why someone would want to hurt her, though, and she likes being near people. She bites off a cluster of round fruits and hops back down with it so the other, hop-impaired blobs can try them, and goes back to eating the Good Fruits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of the other blobs try the round fruits and make appreciative sounds in her direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

She and Poyomon are unimpeded in eating more Good Fruits.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she ponders while she's eating, she might notice that she knows a little more about her body than she used to.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Huh. She is not sure what all this stuff means.

She thinks about how long it took Poyomon to get out of its egg, and how long she sat with it afterwards, and bites a Good Fruit off the plant without eating it and hops over to the rock where the shy blob is. ...It's still there, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Its tail is!

Permalink Mark Unread

She leaves the Good Fruit there and goes back to the Good Fruit plant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poyo?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Buuuuud!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poyo," it shrugs. More delicious fruits, perhaps until this group of plants runs out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fruits!!! These fruits are so good. She is continually delighted by them. Buuut actually she will try a leaf too.

Permalink Mark Unread

The leaf tastes green and a little bitter-sweet, flavored with the memory of hopping with her translucent friend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh! That's a good taste! She eats another leaf and looks around to see if she can see her translucent friend anywhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

This leaf is green, bitter-sweet, and reminiscent of opening her eyes to see the grass she'd offered the shy blob was gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's lots of blobs around, but none of them look quite like she remembers her translucent friend.

Permalink Mark Unread

There might be something familiar about the blobs playing jumping tag, though?

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! This leaf tastes slightly different. She eats another one.

How far off is the jumping tag?

Permalink Mark Unread

This leaf tastes like miming concepts to the blue blob.

The jump-tag group (which has been joined by a third blob) is close enough that she can see between pretty easily, but not so near that she could keep a close eye on both at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. Hmmmmm.

She eats another Good Fruit and looks at Poyomon.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Good Fruits continue to taste sweet and reassuring.

Poyomon looks up from its fruit at her. "Poyo?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bud," she says, and nods at the jumping tag.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poyo," it nods, and prepares to follow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops over to the jumping tag! "Nyoki," she says to the familiar-looking blob.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Prrrrr," buzzes the flying creature, circling down near the ground. It peers at her, tilting its head.

Then it lands on all fours, says "Pu! Pu!," and hops straight in the air, gently flapping its wings to slow its descent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hooray!!!!!!! She has found hop friend again!!!! And Poyofriend is here!!! She hops delightedly. "Bud! Bud!"

Permalink Mark Unread

It hops along with her!

Permalink Mark Unread

Poyomon and the other two blobs look on uncertainly. One starts tentatively hopping along.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sort of wants to tag someone but she has these sharp parts. Oh! She can show hop friend her new super-hopping!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow! It tries to copy her with its wings, with partial success - it can produce much more lift (relative to its mass), but she can do more sudden movement and smoother gliding.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will attempt to copy hop friend's moves too.

Permalink Mark Unread

The other white blob starts jumping too, though more simply.

Poyomon tries stretching up, but can't manage much height or really any bounce at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. Hmmmmm.

She lands on the ground and nudges her big head spike under Poyomon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poyomon is not quite sure where she's going with this, but cooperates as best it can, lifting its fringe out of her spike's way.

Permalink Mark Unread

She carefully nudges the spike under it and then straightens carefully so Poyomon is balanced on top of her without any of her spikes poking it. "Bud!" she says cheerfully, and hops again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poyooo! Po poyoo!," it laughs, as it wiggles up and down with the force of Budmon's bouncing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is careful not to dislodge it or impale it, which means sometimes taking longer glidey hops instead of just up-and-down up-and-down. "Bud! Bud bud!" she chirps happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Po poyoooo"mon Digivolve to...

The white blob on her head starts to glow from within.

Permalink Mark Unread

Its fringe firms up and shapes itself into little limb-nubs, as its overall surface hardens from jelly to skin.

Digimon! Digital monsters!

It grows a pair of long ears (not that Budmon can see those yet) and some little teeth.

Digimon!

Permalink Mark Unread

And, finally, it grows to nearly her own size.

"Tokomon!"

Permalink Mark Unread

???What just happened???

"...Bud???"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!!," it says, then carefully tumbles around her spikes to flop on the grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! You changed!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I changed!," it says. "You changed and you jumped and I wanna jump and I changed!"

And it proceeds to attempt to hop with its little legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I changed!" she agrees. "You changed," she adds to hop friend.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! I can hop UNLIMITED HIGH!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bota!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They cannot hop as high so we are doing HOPPING PRACTICE," it explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Oh! That sounds good! Do you want to practice hopping?" she asks Tokomon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!!"

Hopping is going poorly with its unjointed limb-nubs. It switches to copying Botamon's blob-style squish-hopping.

Permalink Mark Unread

She boops Puroromon with her leaf and leaps into the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they can hop!

Hopping practice seems to work like this: Puroromon flies around within reach of the ground. The other players try to hop at it. Puroromon tries to dodge out of the way.

Budmon is a much more agile hopper than her squishy friend or the white and black blobs, but she might find that advantage somewhat balanced by the need to keep her spikes from touching anyone, making contact only with her leaf.

Permalink Mark Unread

She very much does not want her spikes to touch anyone! She tries very hard to make her leaf the easiest part of her to boop.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hip, hop, hippity hop. Hippity hop and you just can't stop.

They can easily continue practicing this way for a good while. Tokomon will get much better control of its body and jumps, and everyone else will see some effect too - the two smaller blobs more in their jumping power, the two flying ones more in their finesse.

Eventually the white, fuzzy blob will be hungry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh! Budmon can show it the Good Fruits!

Permalink Mark Unread

Budmon can indeed show it to the Good Fruits! ...Which seem to have gotten quite popular. A few of the plants have no berries left, and the ones with berries are crowded enough that she'd have to squeeze in if she wanted any.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She cannot squeeze in, she might poke someone with one of her sharp parts. The white, fuzzy blob has no sharp parts, though! She can fetch it some High Orbs! That will presumably not taste like thorns to it because it does not have any.

Permalink Mark Unread

Orbs!

Permalink Mark Unread

It investigates the orbs, finds them much tastier than grass, and sets to eating them by halves. "Bo-ota!," it says, in gratitude.

Permalink Mark Unread

And its friend, having followed along, starts eating at the other end of the cluster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tokomon starts attempting to climb the trellis itself.

Permalink Mark Unread

She watches it carefully to make sure it doesn't fall or she is there to catch it (with her leaf) if it does, and starts eating Good Fruit leaves on one of the plants that has had all the Fruits eaten off so people aren't crowding it.

Permalink Mark Unread

This leaf tastes of bitter-sweetness and offering Tsubumon her grass.

Permalink Mark Unread

With use of its limbs, ears, hops, and teeth, Tokomon is able to make it up onto a crosspiece with hardly any falling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it bites off a whole cluster in one go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoah.

...

Where...does food go...once it is not in your mouth anymore???

She eats another Good Leaf as she contemplates this.

Permalink Mark Unread

This leaf tastes, recursively, like going back for a second Good Fruit. (But not like the fruit itself.) It has no insights to share on the ultimate destination thereof.

While she's feeling contemplative, she might check her stats again.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nyokimon is what she was before she changed, and Budmon is what she is now, but what are Lalamon and Piyomon?

Leaf wing is probably using her leaf or leaves to hop higher. She doesn't like the sound of Poison Thorns. What happens if she slaps the ground with her leaf?

Permalink Mark Unread

She can hit exactly where she means to, and if she likes she can hit with more force than her leaf ought to have, perhaps even as much as hopping bodily (but without the thorns).

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh!!! Hopping with no thorns! She does that.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can indeed now launch herself off the ground and into the air by pushing off with her leaf! As a projectile she's still just as thorny, of course - her leaf is still her thorn-free part.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she land on her leaf too?

Permalink Mark Unread

She can absorb the impact of landing with it, yes! She can't balance on it or support herself on it for more than a few moments, yet, but that might yield to practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers this, decides that practice can wait until eating time is done, and then decides to see what happens if she eats two Good Fruit leaves at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

Together, the two leaves taste like a more abstracted feeling of sharing her grass with someone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Speaking of eating time, now that she's feeling more vertically confident maybe she'll want to use that to get at some less-crowded fruits?

This tree, for example, has fruits of a similar red but much bigger; while it's too tall to straightforwardly climb, some of the fruits hang down close to the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Ooh! High fruits! She attempts to hop up to where the fruits are and bite one off. Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

With her leaf-assisted jumping, she has no trouble hopping as high as the closest one. Biting it off might require a little planning: it's nearly as big as she is, and her mouth doesn't seem to stretch as wide as Tokomon's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she bite part of it off?

Permalink Mark Unread

She can knock it around with her face, but it swings back from any attempt to sink her teeth into it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...

What if she hops up on TOP of the branch, and tries to bite the part of the fruit that's attached to the tree?

Permalink Mark Unread

This she can do!

Permalink Mark Unread

The fruit falls to the ground and cracks open, revealing many tiny fruits inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! MANY TINY FRUITS. Maybe this is why she couldn't properly bite into it before. She hops down to the ground gleefully and starts eating tiny fruits.

Permalink Mark Unread

The tiny fruits taste tart and rich and royal and purple, with a feeling of doing an easy job well, secure in the knowledge that your friends are doing theirs too, which makes the whole system go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh WOW these are ALSO REALLY GOOD FRUITS.

She hops up to the tree branch and bites another large fruit off.

Permalink Mark Unread

It falls, but this one doesn't immediately crack open.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Hop friend flies over and watches what she's doing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

OH.

Maybe THIS is what she has sharp parts for!

"The tiny inside fruits are good!" she calls to hop friend, and then attempts to open the second fruit with her big head thorn.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can jab it with her big head thorn! Now it's got a hole in it, and she can pick it up on her thorn too if she wants, though it's a little awkward to carry since it's nearly half her size.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her friend buzzes a happy acknowledgment and copies her in biting a fruit off.

Permalink Mark Unread

She attempts to use her thorns to make the hole BIGGER.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some prying can get a section of the outside off!

Her friend is puzzling over its own fruit, which also didn't crack open. It tries copying her with its little tail thorn(?), but can't make much of a dent that way.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops over to open its fruit for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you!," it says. After trying some of the inside fruits, it adds, "Really good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her second fruit is just as tasty as the first.

Permalink Mark Unread

"These are so good," she agrees. "We should see if the others want some!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her friend follows her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tokomon is still climbing around the trellis.

Permalink Mark Unread

The two little blobs have finished their orbs, and seem to be doing a smaller hopping game.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the good berries continue to run out. Competition is getting fierce for the plants which still have fruit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys you guys I found another good fruit!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her friends turn to her, as do some of the blobs left out from the berries.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tokomon, in turning, teeters on its perch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no!!! She darts over to the trellis so she can try to catch Tokomon on her leaf if it falls.

Permalink Mark Unread

She arrives in good time to make the catch, then. "Whoaoah! Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Some of the other blobs cheer the rescue.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome!" she sets it down gently, then points at the tree with her leaf. "That tree has large fruits that if you get them down and get them open have VERY GOOD TINY FRUITS inside! My sharp parts are good for getting them open."

Permalink Mark Unread

With an inquisitive murmur of "yura," "bota," and other blob sounds, a group sets out for the tree. Her more specific friends form up to follow her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hops over to the tree and starts biting down fruits! She will also open them if no one else has good fruit openers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fufumon can't get them down, but it can help open them.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Puroromon conversely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Working together, soon they're supplying fruit to a tiny mob of tiny blobs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hooray!!! Once everyone has fruit she gets another fruit for herself and sets to eating again. It's so good to have helped this many 'mon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of the smaller blobs grow into new forms that can help fetch or open the fruits, and join in the work.

Permalink Mark Unread

And before long, plump with fruit and accomplishment, she'll recognize a full, ready-to-grow sensation. This time it comes in two flavors - the sweet good cheer of Good Fruit, or the tart grand teamwork of Inside Fruit. She can't do both.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh man those are both such good things!!! But...if she has to pick...she will pick Inside Fruit. She couldn't help very much with Good Fruit, and helping and teamwork are more important.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Digivolution."

A terminal types out "DIGIVOLUTION_".

Geometric columns of golden light rise around her, lifting her into the air. Di-Di-Digimon. Her thorns and leaf dissolve into green fragments, swirling around her. Sourceless music fills the air.

Digivolve into— Digimon. Her body grows and sprouts little arms and legs, as the cloud around her turns from green to pink and pours down on top of her. Di-Di-Di Digimon.

The pink fragments coalesce into a flower with the shape of a face. As the music concludes, a pair of leaves complete her form, and she touches down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"La~la~la~" she says happily, "I'm not sharp anymore!!!"

"Yayyy!," says Tokomon, and tackle-hugs her as best it can manage. (She's now two to three times its height, not counting her leaves.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Other ’mon are impressed too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeeehehehehe! She hugs Tokomon back. "I'm bigger now!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are! You're so big I think you can reach everything!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's find out!" she reaches up for the fruits with the insides.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's already harvested all the lowest ones, but with a little jump she can stick her arm/hand to a fruit and drag it down into her reach. The branch pulls back on it, fighting her hand's adhesion.

Permalink Mark Unread

She resolutely pulls the fruit off the branch.

"I dunno about everything but I could reach this! Without even hopping!"

Permalink Mark Unread

SO COOL. Tokomon has metaphorical stars in its eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently there's a lot to look forward to in growing up. Puroromon tears into its inside fruit with renewed vigor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lalamon attempts to break open this fruit with her new limbs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her limbs aren't as pointy as her thorns were, and just jabbing at the surface with them doesn't seem to make a hole.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her hand has some kind of adhesion, right? Can she adhere her hands to opposite sides of the fruit and pull it apart?

Permalink Mark Unread

That works to tear a piece off, yes!

Permalink Mark Unread

(So STRONG.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She is ALREADY BIGGER she should probably give this fruit to someone who is not. And then hug Tokomon some more?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Good plan. Apparently Tokomon is able to purr. It had not known this.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! Purring is extremely good, apparently. She snuggles her friend delightedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a little while, there's some sort of commotion among some of the blobs eating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh-oh! She looks up from her snuggle to assess the problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

An orange snake creature that had been helping open fruits now seems to be fighting with a blue bipedal creature.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nearby, a purple-and-white blob with a helmet is crying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh boy. First things first.

She hurries over to the crying 'mon.

"Are you okay?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He, he pulled my tail," the crying ’mon sniffles. "I wasn't even doing anything and he wouldn't stop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who did?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, that blue guy," she says, waving her tail in the direction of the combatants.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who are definitely getting scratched and dented from the fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers this, and then attempts to tackle the blue one.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's moving around a good bit, but she's twice his height. She makes the tackle.

"Owwh!," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry!" she says. "But you hurt someone! I didn't want you to hurt anyone else!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He started it!," says the blue creature. "He bit me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He" is in fact circling around Lalamon for another go.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant the one whose tail you pulled."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're worrying about tail-pulling while I'm being attacked?!," he says, squaring up to fight back against the orange one.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The tail-pulling hurt!" she says, getting between the two of them so no one can attack anybody. "That 'mon was crying!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not pulling her tail now," he patiently explains. "I don't know why she's still crying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People cry after bad things too, not just during. I think. Like, this one time, someone tried to bite me, so I hopped on them, but then they hopped off crying, so I hopped off after them and gave them grass to eat until they felt better."

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes advantage of Lalamon's protection to ponder this for a moment. "So... you want me to go give her grass?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want you to not pull anyone's tail! Or do other things that will make them cry. Anyway we are all eating tasty fruit now, grass is probably not going to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a lot of things. I don't know all of them yet but I know a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you can just not do the things you know will make people cry, I guess, and then if you do something and it makes someone cry you can apologize and add it to the list," she suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

He ponders that for a moment.

"Okay!," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good! Have you tried the inside fruit? The inside fruit is very good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't like it. It's too sour and smallening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smallening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like doing the same boring thing over and over and it doesn't do anything!

"I like the long red fruits. They taste like FIRE."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. That's weird. They don't taste like that to me. Doesn't fire hurt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah but it's exciting and it fills me up with energy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And there aren't any things that do that but don't hurt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you understand fire.

"...Maybe there's fruits that taste like something else good, like flying or jumping or biting. But I haven't found any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, I've only tasted two fruits and at least one of them tastes different to me than to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Chibimon wanders off towards other fruits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyokyomon attempts to slither after him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you gonna try to fight him more?" she asks Kyokyomon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," it nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because he hurt someone," it says, solemnly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But then I explained what was wrong and he agreed not to do it again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is still hurt," it explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fighting him won't make her not hurt anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will make him hurt the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But then there will be more hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hurt is bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hurt is a debt that must be repaid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How would that even work when someone gets hurt by something that isn't another person?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Snake-shrug. "Fight if you can. If not, no shame."

It moves to slither around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you fight stepping on something sharp?"

She moves to stay between Kyokyomon and Chibimon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thorns can be burned away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if the fire gets on other things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One does one's best," it says, gathering its tail under itself. "Too much damage is not honorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But if you hurt people because they hurt other people then there will be more hurt and hurt makes people upset and that's really bad!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you do not then there is dishonor, and theft, and rampancy, and in time more hurt. That is worse."

And it pushes itself into the air from the ground, briefly stretching to several times its usual length, and begins to glide over her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

There wouldn't be much she could do about that even if it weren't enough of a surprise to leave her gaping for a couple of seconds.

She can chase after him, though. "Wait! He didn't know it would hurt her! You shouldn't hurt people over mistakes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

...It turns and glides to the ground. "Say more about mistakes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're really new and there's a lot of things we don't know! If Chibimon doesn't know what hurts people then they can't avoid hurting people perfectly, they can only try to make it better after, so if they get hurt every time they mess up then they'll just get hurt all the time without being able to avoid it and then they'll be really unhappy all the time and maybe not want to not hurt people. So, so maybe it would make sense to go after him and ask him to say he's sorry and maybe bring her some of a kind of fruit she hasn't tried, but hurting him won't fix anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," it nods. "I will try it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll help!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lalamon and Kyokyomon follow the direction Chibimon went, leaving the purple-tailed blob and the rest of their friends with the fruits.

Permalink Mark Unread

These might be the long red fruits he was talking about, but he doesn't seem to be there.

Permalink Mark Unread

If he's figured out how to climb trees, he might be somewhere up in this one? Kyokyomon could go up and check.

Permalink Mark Unread

...While Kyokyomon is doing that, Lalamon will try a long red fruit.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's crisp and crunchy and most especially spicy. It tastes like her face is a little bit on fire, and like if she wanted to, she could spread that fire around.

The spiciness persists for a bit even after swallowing the bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bwaaaaaaack! She attempts to blow the fire out of her mouth. This probably isn't going to work but it might be funny that she falls over backwards in surprise while doing so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then perhaps the absence of laughter indicates she's unobserved. Despite the burning feeling, no actual fire comes out of her mouth when she blows.

As the spiciness subsides, she can notice the more subtle flavor of being more on edge, more amped up, more antsy to do stuff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh. Okay. She will put this antsiness into catching up with Kyokyomon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyokyomon is still up in the tree. Is she trying out how well her new leaves can carry her?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yesssssssss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Spin, spin, spinspinspin UP! Her two leaves are slower at lifting her increased mass, but once they get going, it's a lot easier to hover bobbing in the air rather than have to keep hopping through the air on her onetime leaf. Similarly she can't make such sudden course adjustments, but she can set her sights in most any direction and fly that way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being big is NICE.

So is Chibimon up in that tree Kyokyomon decided to investigate?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kyokyomon hasn't found any sign of him. And the fruits are sweet on the outside but too crunchy on the inside.

Glide onwards? There's huge orange fruits on the ground over there and one of them is wiggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooh, wiggling fruits. Looks promising.

She nabs a sweet-and-crunchy fruit to try first, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another great thing about being big: hands. If she practices a little, she can grab a small red fruit and pull it off without having to land on anything.

In her mouth the fruit bursts with juice, sweet and slightly tart and suffused with the tingle of sunlight all across her, as though relaxing her and making her bloom.

(The center, though, is not just crunchy but hard. It's not obvious if she can even get into it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And onwards we glide! Kyokyomon squiggles its descent back and forth to make sure she can keep up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lalamon gnaws on the hard bit for a little before swallowing it whole.

Wiggling fruit! What is up with the wiggling fruit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well it's big for a fruit, still a little bigger than her. It sits right on the ground with its non-wiggling brethren amongst a cover of vines and large leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow that is big. She walks around the fruit, inspecting it from all sides.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll find some scaly blue legs poking out of a low hole in the fruit. It seems its wiggles are driven by this attempt at burrowing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no cute???

"Hi!" she says to the legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems wiggling out is at least as hard as wiggling in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm. Hmmmmmmm.

What happens if she grabs the edges of the hole and tries to pull them apart?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hard to get a grip with legs mostly filling the hole.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if she TRIES VERY HARD.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Kyokyomon spirals up the vegetable to get a look at the top.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lalamon and the legs make a valiant effort at pulling, but mostly only wear themselves out.

And then the legs glow white, and shrink down,

Permalink Mark Unread

dropping out of the hole in a more familiar form.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Chibimon! --Sorry to bother you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Consider it forgotten. —Want some of this fruit? The orange part is boring but the seeds are really good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You thought the fruit I liked was boring so I will try some of both," Lalamon decides.

Permalink Mark Unread

At his reduced size, it's a simple matter for him to dip inside, and emerge bearing a little pile of stringy orange goop full of crisp white seeds. "You could try the outside if you can figure out how to get more off. But it's just as boring," he says, offering her the pile.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Kyokyomon is intently watching from the top of the fruit, a bit higher than Lalamon's leaves.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She stuffs the goop and seeds in her mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

The orange goop has a mushy, stringy texture and an earthy, buttery flavor, bitter with the promise of getting back at whoever wronged you.

The seeds are smoky and crisp, flavored with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice and nutmeg, and clouded with the potential of dreams made real.

They do somewhat complement each other, the spice of the seeds spreading across and through the plainer goop for an overall rich, balanced combination.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't like the goop very much, but not in a boring way," she decides. "But the seeds are very nice. Do you want to help me take some seeds to Caprimon? I think she is still unhappy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I can help with that!" He sets to carrying out another armload of the seed goop.

Permalink Mark Unread

She scoops up an armload of seed goop too and starts trundling back to Caprimon.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Behind them Kyokyomon tastes the goop. Then, for lack of arms, it slither-follows empty-finned.)

Permalink Mark Unread

His hands occupied, Chibimon starts to sing as he walks.

“Ohhh I got real bored and I found a gourd and I broke into the back,

“And I found some goo for me and you and I brought some for a snack,”

Permalink Mark Unread

Lalamon is charmed! She hums along.

Permalink Mark Unread

(As she hums, one of her powers tickles at her awareness. She could sing along to that power, if she wanted to. But it's a different song than Chibimon's.)

In this way it won't take them long to get back to Lalamon's inside-fruit-harvesting operation. Many of the 'mon have wondered off but a good few are still there, harvesting and eating and playing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lalamon looks for Caprimon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cracking open fruits with her horns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! Are you feeling better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, thank you! Would you like some fruit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah! We brought fruit too." She holds out the seeds and nods at Chibimon. "Because you were hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

Caprimon seems mollified, if perhaps not interested in further engaging personally with Chibimon. Between them they can share food and swap for the kinds they prefer, and generally chat. (Kyokyomon catches up, but returns to the fruit harvest rather than chatting or lurking.)

Permalink Mark Unread

A few minutes in, Chibimon is bowled over by a familiar white blob. Both giggle as they right themselves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hiiiii Tokomon!!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi hi hi!," it replies. "I learned a fancy jump!"

Hop bounce backflip!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh wow!!!"

She attempts to copy this.

Permalink Mark Unread

On an initial attempt she can sort of turn backwards in the air, but unless she does something clever, she'll land on her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oof. She tries again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not on the second try either.

Permalink Mark Unread

What if...she attempts to use her leaves to move her while she does this.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets her a lot more torque! She lands on her face this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chibimon isn't faring much better, but he's always bouncing up for another try.

Permalink Mark Unread

She attempts to get higher before doing the flippy part.

Permalink Mark Unread

And keeping at it this way, before long she'll do a backflip!

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a pretty impressive trick!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's neat! It was tricky and I figured out how and it's fun."
