What the hell—don't question it.

"Yes, sir." After a moment, he adds, "Sorry," since it worked for Valan. He can't quite manage 'repentant' but he can get within spitting distance of 'sincere'.

"Are you going to need help re-acclimating to normal life? ...Will the other former slaves?"

"...probably. On both counts."

He's not going to get away with not explaining himself, is he. "I. I really don't like talking about. What happened. And he's been—"

...yeah. Somehow, he thinks this king actually might understand, which is strange, but a good kind of strange.

"Thank you, sir."

He tries to remember what they were talking about before things happened. "Should I...go on explaining how slavery works in Sesat."

"Not if it's harming you to talk about it."

"It's fine," he lies. Skipping over the question about the conviction process...

"Slaves...under Sesati law, slaves aren't people. We're property to be bought, sold and traded. Any children we have are slaves, too, unless they have a free parent who'll claim them."

The horror mixed in with the confusion in that response is gratifying.

"I'm not sure what part you're confused by. I've never tried explaining this before, sorry."

"I'm confused by the part where anyone thinks this is remotely acceptable."

"Well. I'm not going to defend it."

He deliberately doesn't glance over at Valan.

Valan is not going to answer unless someone asks him to.

"They enslave children? For being born to the wrong parents?"

"If a sheepdog has pups, you train them to herd sheep," Zaira says in the blandest tone he can manage. It still comes out tinged with irony.

"Well. That is going to have to stop. Not the dogs, I assume the dogs are fine, but people are not dogs."

Zaira snorts. "I'm pretty sure the dogs are fine, yes. If there's anything I can do to help with that..." He doesn't finish his sentence.

"If you'd like to stay and help, we can provide a room for you."

"...thank you. That's very generous of you." He's not sure what his other options are at this point, but he's pretty sure that if a king makes you an offer, even a weirdly nice and understanding king, you don't turn it down.

"Shall we talk more tomorrow?"

"If you would find that convenient‚ yes."

Is he dismissed? That sounded a little bit like a dismissal.

He's dismissed. Someone will help him get set up with somewhere to sleep and explain how to find resources for people new to Azan.

That sounds like a task for future Zaira.

Right now he has a place to sleep, so he's going to collapse onto the appropriate soft surface and sleep as though he hasn't slept in three days. (He hasn't.)

That's one newcomer dealt with.

"Valan?"

"Yes?"

"Are you interested in helping us against Iral?"
