The land is unusually quiet, especially for the perfect storm that is Haven, Maine. The woods that so many have found trauma in, particularly one Haven PD Detective with keen senses. This creepy silence is broken suddenly by the snapping of twigs and the huffs and puffs of a girl, sobbing as she runs through the woods.
"Whereas I can kick most peoples arse with a sword. Yours is more practical."
"I'll admit, the sword sounds cooler."
Nathan, who has been passively listening to their inane babble as he drives back to the police station, parks his Bronco in the spot for the Chief of Police and exits the car. He opens the door to the backseat politely, a sweeping hand inviting her to exit the car. "Welcome to the police station Miss...?"
"Arendsen. Miss Selena Arendsen. Hi," she says as she hops out of the truck. "I have a ton of other names, but I've been mostly using this one right now."
He stares at her dead-eyed for a moment. "I'm not even going to question that. Nice to meet you Miss Arendsen, once we ask you a few questions about your world, hopefully nothing too intrusive, and then we work on setting up your identity and a way for you to live out here."
Nathan leads the way into the station as he talks, immediately walking to his office that's clearly labelled Chief Wuornos.
"I reserve the right to keep my mouth shut, but I don't think it'll be a problem."
He frowns at that and sits in the big chair behind the desk. "Fine. So, name, date of birth, place of birth, social security number."
"Selena Francesca Vittoria Ludovica Arendsen. Not sure about the birthday, but we settled on May 10th, 1984. No idea where I was born." And she reads out her social security number from memory.
"Why don't you know those things? Are you the undocumented child of criminals or something?" He continues to put the details into the computer nonetheless. "Well, no one under that name, but the social security number is registered to a Juliet Salvatore of Mystic Falls, Virginia."
"I was found wandering by myself when I was four. Nobody claimed me and I was adopted by my nonna. Never heard of a Juliet Salvatore or Mystic Falls."
"Suspicious is his neutral mode," Audrey quips from by the door.
Nathan glares at his partner. "We'll have to set you up with a fake identity, which means Officer Parker here will have to take you to our resident criminal. Audrey, if you wouldn't mind? I have some paperwork to do."
"Exciting. Also kind of concerning. Are you sure about this?"
"Duke isn't that bad, and around here we have to do things the slightly more questionable way because of the way things are. Chief just hates him, childhood bullying takes its toll on the adult world."
Audrey leads her out and to another car, a basic rental.
"A bully and a criminal. Sounds like a gem."
"He's sweet, really," she has a smile on her face that speaks to way more affection than one has for just a friend.
"He's cute then?"
"The absolute cutest, he has that scruffy scoundrel vibe to him, and he's been nothing but sweet to me."
"Scruffy looking nerf herder?" She pauses. "Do you have Star Wars here too?"
"I'm aware it exists, but I've never seen it. Sci-fi has never been my genre. Vampire romance is where I'm at."
"It's a good genre! Though mostly I grew up on the classics. My nonna is a bit of a classics snob."
"The nonna who is immortal? I suppose, when you have forever, taking pleasure in the old might be nice."
"So she keeps saying. Where are you from, are you local?"
"No, it was a new move, I'm following clues that might lead to my mother. I'm a foster kid, so I'm not really from anywhere."
