The land is unusually quiet, especially for the perfect storm that is Haven, Maine. The woods that so many have found trauma in, particularly one Haven PD Detective with keen senses. This creepy silence is broken suddenly by the snapping of twigs and the huffs and puffs of a girl, sobbing as she runs through the woods.
Hailie runs as fast as she can, cradling her broken hand, every so often tripping through a tree as she phases in and out of solid reality without control. It's not something she can spend time focusing on, especially given she's being chased by something that's skin slides off. Unfortunately, running has never been her strong suit, and she's even worse at it after running from the thing for as long as she has. As she feels a slimy gooey arm grab at her, she trips, cursing Haven as she's done for most of her life, for her mother, for her curse, for it's Haven-ness. Now on her back, she struggles as the skin slides off the thing that used to look more convincingly like sweet Mrs Conway, nearly retching as a piece of skin flops on to her chest. Thankfully, just in time, a shot rings out and the thing slumps on top of her.
"Oh ew! Ew, ew, ew, get it off of me!"
"Okay, everything is going to be okay Hailie," Nathan tosses the body off of the young girl, helping her up with her non-broken hand. "Damn, so that was...?"
Nathan, as per usual, turns to his partner Audrey for some sort of insane theory on the newest issues in their Troubles town.
"Well we found a couple of skinned bodies, judging by the way it's slipping off, I'd say a skinwalker Trouble, has to wear others skin to not be... That. Better call Dwight for clean up."
She answers from her crouched position by the body, using a pen to investigate the pile of almost person like sludge.
"IT WAS GOING TO SKIN ME?" Hailie screeches, a tad dramatic, but the thought of being that kind of weird fleshless thing, even if she was dead, sends her straight in to panic attack mode. Nathan can't hold on to her, as she phases in and out of reality, and a sudden crackle happens above them.
Audrey looks up to find the source of the sounds and the reason the hairs on the back of her neck are starting to stand up.
"Uh, Nathan? Are you seeing what I'm seeing?"
"A sparkly hole in the sky that looks like someone who couldn't rip straight went at it? I think the answer is yes."
The hole widens, crackling with mysterious blue-green electricity, and if one were to pay attention, one would notice each major strike from the rim of the hole to the centre that appears quite lightning like is at the exact same time as each of Hailie's broken sobs.
Audrey does notice, moving in a flash to comfort the Troubled young girl as best she can. "Hey, Hailie, everything is just fine..."
"I could have been a flesh suit, that is so not fine!"
The hole widens again, now large enough to fight a whole person through more than easily.
"Hailie... Hailie! I need you to focus, because that? You're doing it, and we don't know what it is! So I need you to breathe with me, okay?" Audrey grabs each side of Hailie's face, focusing her eyes on her to get her to focus on the task at hand.
While Hailie does begin to calm down, it's not before a person, seemingly human, falls through the hole she's already made, and it closes immediately as they hits the ground.
The woman lets out a groan. "Ow."
"Haven PD, don't move!" Nathan is the first to spring into action, his shotgun pointed at their newest arrival, Audrey following after him, equally as hostile and authoritarian.
Selena jumps up, stunned and surprised and eep! She holds up her hands. "What? The hell!"
"Who are you? What are your-"
"Nathan, the girl just dropped from a portal, okay, maybe wait until she does something worth treating her like a criminal for?" Audrey, though still holding her gun, has already lost the tension Nathan has. It makes her want to give him a comforting pat on the shoulder, but she knows that's like taunting him with his Trouble, and after everything with both of his father's, she's not sure she wants to poke that bear. Instead, she faces down the stranger and uses her nicest 'I'm kind and helpful' voice.
"Hi there, sorry for grumpy here, he gets funny when weird stuff happens. I'm Detective Parker, this is Chief Wuornos, we're with Haven Police. Would you mind telling us your name, and what you remember of how you got here?
"Uh. I was making dinner with my nonna and -- I have no idea what happened. Face full of dirt and guns. Could you please put them away? How did I get here?"
"Sure thing." Audrey starts to holster her gun, glaring at Nathan to do the same, so he uncocks the shotgun begrudgingly.
Nathan is scowls, deciding to take control, given he's actually the boss around here.
"Parker, how do we know she's not secretly a murderer?" He half whispers, and he's actually very quiet, just loud enough for Audrey to hear, given his intensely strong hearing makes him better at volume control.
She can't hear what they're saying. "You said Haven police. Can I see some sort of identification?"
Nathan succinctly pulls out his badge, showing the shining side before flipping it open to show the rest of his ID. He waits for Audrey to do the same before speaking. "Happy? Welcome to Haven, Maine, the worst place in the world."
Nathan dramatically walks off into the woods, leaving Audrey to deal with the personable side of yet another of their problems.
Audrey watches as her partner saunters off like the master of brooding he seems to think he is.
"Sorry about him, he lost his father a couple of days ago, taking up Sheriff in his place is just stressing him out. I promise, when you get to know him, he'll be equally as crabby and sour, but you'll kinda, maybe, sorta, like it, not really."
"Okay. That's... okay. I'm still very confused and you seem to be not confused. Can you please fill me in? How did I get here? Who is she? Is she okay?"
Hailie looks up at the two, leaning against a tree as she gingerly hugs her broken arm and finishes her calming breaths.
"Oh, hi, I'm Hailie, not of any sort of importance. I'll just... Thanks for the save Audrey, I'll see you next time I nearly die."
Hailie, with a surprising speed for an injured girl, runs off into the woods, not really fond of spending any more time around a cop than she has to.
