God dammit.

"Okay but – somebody would definitely pick me out. I'm kind of hard to miss."

"That's what the makeup is for. Have some faith."

"Okayfine."

He thrusts the stack of items at him.

He takes them, drops them on a chair, disappears into his room and returns in a shirt with a collar and pants with only four pockets that cling to nothing.

This is so uncomfortable.

He puts the coat on and pins on the name tag.

Jean tucks the pens into the pocket of the coat, adjusts the name tag to be a little more crooked, kneels to put the shoes on his feet.

...wow, okay, this is sort of–

Huh.

(He lifts his feet for it, one at a time.)

"Better. Sit down, I'll need you to hold still for the makeup."

He is almost immediately on the floor.

The first step is actually a rubber skullcap, carefully applied to cover his hair, and makeup to blend it with his skin.

"This would be easier if you kept your hair shorter."

"Sorry I didn't optimize for stealth."

"Long hair is more practical when you don't have wigs available," he allows, testing foundation colors on Z's jaw.

"...don't know about more practical, I just, like– like it."

"It goes with your aesthetic."

He's settled on a foundation.

"I mean – yeah, I guess."

It's kind of hard to watch what he's doing, but he's half trying anyway.

He takes Z's chin in his hand, holds it in place. "Stop moving your face."

“...mhmm.”

He can feel himself going red. Not the time.

"And stop blushing, it changes your skin tone."

“It’s involuntary!”

If anything that made it worse.

"Oh."

"Well, try."

He thinks as hard as he can about — pick something good — being told he gave up on helping his fellow man.

...okay, it’s working, but now he’s mad.

"Better."

More makeup, now. Contouring.

Unfairly returned to his right mind, he sits sullenly through it.

He's engrossed in the detail work, painting weary shadow beneath his eyes, drawing on imperfections.

There's a wig, eventually; he tries a couple before he finds one he's satisfied with.
