"The world is round. More or less. If I leave the sun in one place for too long, half of it freezes and the other half burns."

"...and if you leave it in the middle, the edges freeze?"

"The other kind of round."

She raises a hand in front of her – light coalesces into a sphere in midair, and then into another, brighter but smaller.

"...you can't just keep it over the top half?"

"That's the interesting part."

She flicks the little model sun, sets it spinning slightly askew around the world.

"'Down' is towards the center."

She flicks a little spark off her fingertips, lets it fall towards the top – and then does the same near the bottom, just to the side, and lets it fall towards the top.

"I hope you know what you've gotten yourself into."

"...but on the bottom parts, up is towards the center," Kamila says, looking moderately skeptical of this claim.

She thinks over her options here.

"...have you ever seen a magnet?"

"Sailors' sacred stones? No, my lady, but I've heard of them. For divination?"

"Not quite."

A pair of smooth, dark grey stones appear in her palm – she hands them off to Kamila.

"Move them apart and put them back together."

"Should we–"

"Shh. Don't interrupt them."

...huh.

......huh.

She's fascinated.

She ends up sliding down to sit on the floor, experimenting. If she puts them some distance apart and nudges one towards the other, how it moves slowly at first and accelerates ... how she can move one just quickly enough to pull the other after it, never letting them quite touch ... how they pinch if she puts one on either side of her palm ... how tricky it is to pull them apart at a constant speed, because it takes more force and then less ... oh, and if she turns one they push away, invisibly...

"They're interesting, aren't they."

She sits down beside her and produces a handful of small, blunted iron pins, scattering them on the ground.

"Yes, my lady," absently, already experimenting with ... ooh. Ooh.

Dhayos is just watching her, now.

One of the Atons stands and leaves the room, quietly,

leaving the other one still leaned up against Elantine.

"How does..."

She plucks a hair from her head, holds it between the two stones, watches as it fails to stir.

"...it's not wind..."

"...none of the explanations I could give you are exactly right."

She picks up one of the pins.

"The simplest one is that they both have a kind of energy that pulls on things made of iron."

"Is it magic?"

"Magic is a terrible category. But no."

"Why is magic a terrible category?"
