"That's super ominous, dad. Should I open up his room? Maybe get Mrs. Leighton to come by tomorrow to get it cleaned? Or do you want to leave it all gross and dusty. Make him clean it himself."

"No. I'll do it myself. You're still not to go in there. It's a Juliet Free Zone."

"That's still so unfair. This is my house too. And he hasn't been here in fifteen years."

"And its been a rule for fifteen years. You better go respond to the letter. I'll start dinner soon."

She hops off his desk and hugs him.

"If you want to tell me more about it, you know where I am."

"Nosey."

"Always. How else am I gonna find out all the worlds secrets? Gotta be ambitious."

"Uh-huh. Get. You have homework to do. Don't think I forgot."

"That Salvatore memory. It's a blessing and a curse. I'm going. Have fun with your game," she says as she heads out the door.

He doesn't respond, but she does see his expression drop when she leaves his office, just for a second.

Juliet leaves him be, though her body is overcome with nervous energy. She wishes he would tell her what is wrong. What did Stefan do? She's never heard him say a bad word against him, before now.

She heads to the library and to the safe, and goes through the motions, her thoughts filled with anxiety and a low level anger. The number is tucked away in the back of the safe, under a whole lot of cash and deeds and family heirlooms. The numbers are slightly faded, written in faint rushed pencil. Not her dads handwriting.

She takes out her phone and sending a quick text:

Hey Stefan, this is Juliet. You're welcome home anytime.

She doesn't want to put anymore thought into it. Her dad was already a broody, anxious man. But she hasn't even seen him react this way before. A neutral, short text is definitely the way to go.

Next she sends a location and time to Tyler, she really needs to not be here right now. Tyler will help, he always does. They can yell and fight and get all their excess energy out. And be home in time for dinner. Maybe the Lockwood boy can help her distract her dad.

She takes a deep breath. It was going to be okay. Family was family. Even when they drove you insane.

Maybe it had something to do with her mom. Her dad never really spoke about her, and she didn't really have any feelings about the dead woman, but... it was completely understandable for her dad to have mixed feelings about the man he last saw the day his pregnant girlfriend died. The mother of his only child.

...yeah, that made sense.

Even though the nagging sensation of her missing something. something important, nagged at her. But secrets never lasted long in this house. So one way or another, all would come to light.

She was sure of it.
