"Anything's good, thank you."

He gets out a plastic container of frozen soup from a box of cold embedded in the wall and starts heating it up on the camp stove, shifting the water aside. He also grabs a half-eaten loaf of bread.

"It'll be five, ten minutes to heat the soup back up. Freezers are tricky to make, and expensive to run, but I can afford it and they're wonderfully convenient. See, engines turn heat differences into motion. You can do it in reverse too! Motion into a heat difference."

Nodnod! "I'm sure I'll be getting my–iron's worth, whatever I end up picking."

"Glad to hear it. We're far, far below the kinds of things the Ancestors could build, but we've kept up as much as we can."

"Of course."

He'll eat and thank Kevin and get going, now.

The next world he tries is what he's been looking for, and finally he returns to Clear Spring with as much water as the demon can move.

They're very glad to see him and the water.

"Sorry it took us so long."

"It's all right, there's no deadline. I hope you had a safe trip. Let us know if you need anything."

"I think we're going to rest a few days and then check on Vaayo."

"That sounds like a fine plan. Will you tell us what else you found out there?"

"Some other time, sure."

"Of course. You go rest up."

That is a thing he can do.

After a few quiet days, he jumps to Azan and goes looking for Vaayo.

Vaayo is still alive.

"Hey. How's Azan treating you?"

"It's okay. Nobody's making me lie, so it's better here."

"I'm glad. I finally got Clear Spring their water, by the way, so I'll probably stay here for a bit."

"I could use some translation help while you're here but you probably want to be paid for it and I'm not sure what to give you."

"I could just do it for you anyway."

"If you're comfortable with that."

"I, um, I want to help you. I like you."

"I like you too," he says a little hesitantly.

Then Micah will smile a little and help Vaayo with his translation questions and maybe at some point brush his hand against Vaayo's.

Vaayo has lots of questions about the language and completely fails to respond to the touch.

Yeah, that's fair. It's nice just being near him, anyway.
