"Huh. Why his sister? Kisla does - the important people all come together and talk about it and pick one."

“Because the king is the country, and we’ve had kings from the same bloodline since before we have consistent records. And it means that future kings can be raised with the right values and knowledge.”

"You'll get an idiot for a king eventually like that."

“I know. But the previous king’s council should be able to keep them from doing any harm.”

"The new king can't say 'I hate this stupid council you're all fired'?"

“Not right away, there’s a period of time when replacements can only be made for council members who’ve died... I guess the king could kill them all but then we’d execute him and move on to the next one.”

"Ah, just like home. If the king went crazy people'd leave or start ignoring him and, well, we'd probably have a little war and a few executions but he wouldn't stay king for long."

“Yup. It’s never gotten particularly bad here, we’ve definitely executed a king or two but I don’t think very many people were harmed before we got around to it.”

"Things get confused and warped and forgotten after a while. There's supposed to be this one king who invented," he gestures at his boat, "A kind of boat sort of like mine but worse, and then went and had wars with everyone he could find and nobody could beat him and, you know, he was winning so the best fighters wanted to be with him and get slaves and so on, it was apparently pretty awful."

Maki makes a face. “We wouldn’t let him. That kind of people—they wouldn’t be on a king’s council. Council members are paid enough to live on, that’s all, people seeking fame and fortune stay away. We want people on the council who care more about Azan than their own pockets.”

"How... Optimistic," he loanwords, "If only things always went perfectly to plan, hm?"

Maki tilts his head questioningly.

"Maybe one of the advisers says, if you pay me something I will make the king know you do good work and should be rewarded."

“No one on the council is like that,” Maki insists. “And if someone was, people would notice and then they wouldn’t be on the council anymore.”

"...If you say so. In my experience people don't stop being in charge easily."

“Azan is the way it is specifically so that people who shouldn’t be in power can’t stay in power long.”

"I'd have to see it in action to really believe it. And I'm not terribly inclined to leave my boat actually."

“That makes sense. I don’t believe any country can manage to do anything more than struggle along without doing things like we do, but I’m not exactly going anywhere to find out.”

"Visiting is fun, all the people I've seen are pretty different, but you're strange, you know. I don't quite feel safe away from the water."

“I don’t know how you do it, I get nervous wading into a lake.”

Oh, yes, open water is very dangerous. But it's been so profitable thus far, see?" He hefts the bronze knife he's been playing with and indicates the basket of dye. "And I'm sure there's more trading to be done here. We'll get home with things they've never seen before sooner or later."

Maki nods enthusiastically.

“Hey, one of your friends was telling me about your gods and also mentioned stars, and that got me wondering, what constellations do you have?”

"...There are many."

Could Anik draw him some and tell him the stories behind them?

Maki seems genuinely interested in the constellations and unaware of any motivations Anik might suspect him of.

He recovers pretty well, anyway.

Here are some constellations that are carefully chosen to be useless for navigation. Not all constellations have stories, but people think actually they do because gods plan ahead, and mostly the tales haven't happened yet.
