Immigration Procession
Haria would like an Osirian Green Card
Permalink Mark Unread

Haria the Great Wizard Badger arrives with the last of the loyal Urchins into a small apartment owned by...her, probably. S. R Egbad Mercantile. If not now, then as soon as she visits a bank. Eriape had bought it and equipped it as a lilypad for her escape to Geb, but that's certainly not happening.

Haria still might want to go, but she'd probably be enslaved, in Geb.

She settles the urchins on blankets, waits until they go to sleep, and stays in the protected apartment for three hours, enough for any eager scryers to have wasted their scries.

And then she leaves the apartment, and walks out into early dawn of Osirion.

At a glance she could be a stray dog, and is mostly ignored. The people of Osirion do lots of their business early in the day, before the heat; the market is already bustling.

Permalink Mark Unread

As soon as she gets anywhere where there's more than one or two people around, Haria goes into a blind alley, and casts her [Extended Fleshy Facade], her [Mage Armor] and one or two other spells. She's holding on to her [Alter Self] until she actually arrives at the Sothis immigration office. It will expire otherwise.

The Sothis immigration office is neat and orderly and quiet and has grim Risen Guard at the door, like other civic offices, thanks to yesterday's lich event. There are a couple of foreign adventurers in line, chattering in Kelish.

The Risen Guard stops Haria and demands to know her business.

Harià sits up on her hind legs, and gazes at him.

"Good Morning Risen Guard Sir! I am a Lawful nonhuman undead Wizard, not a Lich, third Circle, here to lawfully Apply for Permission to Reside in this Country with my Dependents and Also Permission to Do Business selling Spells, Spellcasting Services, and Magic Items. I am not as yet Certain if my Dependents are Lawful, but I will Try my Best. You will note that I am under Several Spells, including one that Makes me Appear Living. I am likewise Able to Appear Human on Demand."

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it in fact Lawful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Haria is, in fact, a Lawful Badger.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there any man of Osirion who can vouch for you? A business partner, a ..." relative, except probably not - "member of an adventuring party, any person who can testify to your history and conduct?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have done most of My adventuring Beneath the Sea, having the advantage of not Needing to Breathe, and so do not have any Local Friends. However, there will be a Gentleman representing the Pathfinder Society in Sothis, who I can Call Upon to testify as to my Adventuring Career, having done so under their Aegis and Registered under their Purview. I am a Corresponding Member of that August Institution. I believe the name of the Local Representative is Dion d'Orsay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. You can bring him this referral form." Here's a copy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you Sir Risen Guard." A mage hand guided by Harià's pointy nose takes the form from the worthy's hand, folds it, and places into a leather satchel that hangs over and off Haria's right shoulder. She turns in-place and walks out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, at least it's a Lawful undead badger.

The representative of the adventuring association with which she has previous experience is requested to testify to her general character, history, known associations, and any criminal history.

Reply from the Pathfinder Society Representative, Dion d'Orsay

Yes, we're not happy about it either, but it is a member.

General Character & History

Haria an undead awakened badger wizard. In the recent Arcanamirium Typology of Undead, she's type 6. Not a lich. Haria reports to cleric is that Haria is not particularly tortured, but notes that being undead is not as comfortable as being alive. Participated in 3 succesful underwater expeditions to Azlanti ruins, stretching over 3 years. No known betrayals. Applied through letter. Arrived via teleportation. Started at first Circle as buffing support. Reached 3rd circle after events with Aboleths recounted in the Journal of the Pathfinder Society Summer issue of Seven years ago, attached. Uncertain motivations. Has stated under Threnodic Abadar's Truthtelling that she has not done anything she considers evil, ever, in her life, and likewise doesn't intend to betray or steal from the expedition. Has a weird way of speaking.

Reports from other members of the party were hesitantly positive, and confused about why Harià.

  1. Exists
  2. Does anything

Known Associations:

Up until this, nothing beyond the adventuring party that she participated in, Dion D'Orsay has heard rumors of what's coming out of Cheliax. Probably related to that lich with the badger obsession.

Criminal History:

Not known to have committed any crimes.

"Is this Sufficient?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’ll be used for pricing insurance against you making trouble while in the country. You mentioned dependents? Are they also undead?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Presently Not. It May be worth Informing you at this point of Why I am Here. I was Until Recently the Friend and Room-Mate of the Great Badger Ally, Princess Eriape. Her Lair was Raided, and She Captured, and likely to be Killed. This because of the Events surrounding the Publishing of her Autobiography that you May have Heard Of. I was not Present for This."

"Because of these Events, I, now without a Home, have arrived here with Nine Human Orphans previously in the Employ of the Eriape Organization, who did not Trust that there would not be any Retribution against them from the Authorities."

"Lady Eriape also Owned an Apartment Here, through S. R. Egbad Mercantile, an Organization that I will- as soon as I visit a Large Bank- obtain Control of, which I intend to Sell, as it is Valuable."

Permalink Mark Unread

“….so you have nine human slaves. Ages and sex?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do they Have to Be Slaves in Osirion? Perhaps I can Adopt Them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Are you a close relative?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honesty compels me to Admit that would be an Unlikely Happenstance, as I am from Badger Island, and they are all from Westcrown, Cheliax."

Haria pauses.

"Also they are Human and I am a Badger."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Then no, you cannot legally adopt them.” People will try the most awful nonsense to get around the protections afforded to child slaves. “They could pursue their own citizenship applications if they are of at least 20 years of age if human, male, can pay the fees and have an Osirian to vouch to their conduct.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine, Then. The important thing is that they are Protected from the Unlawfulness and Ungentlemanliness of Cheliax. I suppose I can Marry them Off Eventually, or they can Be Powerful and Amazing Adventurers like Me." She scribes a List and passes it to the Risen Guard.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Osirion formally discourages as Evil enslaving children. If any of them die you will be fined up to one hundred Absalom pounds, including if they die of ordinary illness, if they die by violence or in childbirth, or if they are executed for a crime. Before they reach the age of 21 you have to arrange their marriages or ship them out of the country, Katapesh places no restrictions on slavery.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a Non-Evil option that the Country of Osirion Recommends?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“…to take child slaves to? As an undead wizard in the service of a lich?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"To Protect the Urchins. It seems that if Osirion discourages Enslaving Children, I should not Do it. So what does the Great Country of Osirion encourage to do with Orphan Urchins with No Relatives if One is Burdened with the Responsibility for Such?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Take them to an orphanage and leave them there with money for their upkeep. Except that is complicated in this case by the fact that you mentioned they are perhaps fugitives from Chelish justice; if they are we will hand them over.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would not Call it Justice. If they are Enslaved, would you Hand them Over Anyway? Would you Hand me Over, merely for Being Undead, such being apparently Lawful to Kill There?"

Permalink Mark Unread

No one on the run from justice thinks it’s justice. “Osirion may at its discretion extradite any free person of Osirion to Cheliax on Cheliax’s credible assurance that they committed a serious crime in Cheliax, unless they can plead under truth magic that they did not commit the alleged crime. If someone wanted to extradite a slave they would pursue civil action against the slave’s owner and seek to be awarded the slave in civil court.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems that the Incentives Here are for Me to Enslave Them to Protect them from the Putative Justice of Cheliax."

Haria wiggles, in deep thought. "And Yet That does not seem to be in Accordance with My Friend Eriape's Final Request."

"What are the Requirements to Found an Orphanage?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He has to look that one up. "Orphanages may be founded by any Lawful church, or the Church of Sarenrae, if the other orphanages they operate perform in aggregate in the top two thirds of orphanages in Osirion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can one Earmark a Donation for Such, by Means of a Contribution to the Church of Abadar?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, you may contribute to the Church of Abadar's orphanages, and you may if you choose contribute money they may use only to found a new orphanage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"May one Thereby Purchase the Naming Rights to the Resulting Orphanage?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It depends on how large the donation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With your Help, I have now Realized how Urgent it is to Found the 'Lady Eriape Was Innocent' Orphanage. Thank you, Sir Guard. When you See me again, I may have Fewer Dependents."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thaaaat's going to obviously get refused on the grounds that no one wants an orphanage named after a patron lich but he doesn't want to be the one to tell the thing this news.

Also, Cheliax, your insane Avistani undead, so vastly inferior to our sensible Garundi undead, are leaking again and apparently evacuating fugitives by Teleport.

Permalink Mark Unread

Haria walks, then, to the Main Temple of Abadar in Sothis. She walks up to one of the convenient acolytes there.

"Pardon me, Good Cicerone Sir, But I am looking for directions to the Orphanage Department."

Permalink Mark Unread

If she's willing to wait a little and pays some fees she can be directed to a representative of the three orphanages (two for girls, one for boys) that the Church of Abadar runs in Sothis.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is willing to wait a little and pay some fees!

Permalink Mark Unread

This person is far from delighted that their day now features consultations with a talking animal but so it goes sometimes. "How can I help you, sir?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It is not clear from her face how Harià feels about anything.

"Hello! I am Harià. I am a Badger from Cheliax, and I have the responsibility for a small Number of Urchins. I would like to Ensure the Well-Being of these Urchins, this being the last Request of my Friend who was Employing Them. It has been suggested that an Orphanage is the Right Place. It so Seems apt to Name the Institution Responsible for Their Well-Being for my Friend. I would like to know what this would Cost- Perhaps to Found a special so Named Institution, or to Temporarily Rename an Existing One."

Permalink Mark Unread

"....well, it depends what you'd want to name it. If you'd like to have a Her Majesty Aspexia III orphanage, I expect you could purchase the naming rights with a donation of perhaps fifteen thousand Absalom pounds. If you wanted to name it after the pretender Queen Abrogail II, of course we can't do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately Both of Those Women are my Enemies. I would like it Named the 'Lady Eriape was Innocent Orphanage', if you Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, we're not able to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why is then This beyond your Capacities?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know who Lady Eriape is. She's the lich from Cheliax who came to Osirion yesterday to get her autobiography published. You cannot name an orphanage either after a lich or after a claim about a lich's innocence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is Most Unfair. She was always Nice to All the Badgers and taught me Magic. Does this Policy Prohibit only her Name or is it Any Reference to Her Whatsoever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely no references of any kind to any lich in orphanage naming. An orphanage should be named after a worthy person who is an example to the orphans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are the Qualifications for Being such a Worthy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should be a wealthy, respected, living person, ideally of Osirion, who any Osirian would be proud that their taxes were paying to raise orphans into."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas. In that Case, I would like to Deposit Nine Urchins and All Associated Upkeep the Normal Way, Please. Is there an Option to Visit these Urchins regularly to Ensure they are Treated Fairly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is not. It's considered best for orphans to have no contact with their former family, to avoid confusion, and it is not appropriate for them to spend time with foreign adventurers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas. It is Better than them being Slaves If you Ask Me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, definitely. The orphanages are clean and safe and I expect can get them respectably married even though they're Avistani."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Some time later, Haria returns to Immigration.

"Hello Sir Risen Guard Again! I now have Fewer Urchins, and so Fewer Dependents. I have here a Letter from the Orphanage Person stating their Final Deposition."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see," he says stiffly.

With no dependents it's a fairly straightforward immigration process. Because she is a mad Avistani undead she has to purchase insurance against her breaking Osirian laws or departing while owing unpaid fines.

Permalink Mark Unread

Harià pays the insurance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Osirion is happy to have Harià on the tax rolls and give her a business identification number and wish her a happy long undeath.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Harià walks out the door, and heads towards the House of the Imperishable Brotherhood
