They are in the basement.
She drops her hands and looks down. "At your disposal."
"Do you really want it?"
"I wanted it in my hair," she says, because she's not sure how to make all the rules add together right here but he asked again and she's like on recess and saying she wants it in her hair isn't like saying she wants him to do things. That's not allowed she's sure.
"Do you want to do it yourself, or do you want me to help?"
"At your disposal."
"I don't know what that means."
"We're not allowed to want things about you." She's been coming closer - unsure and waiting for someone to say something and be angry, but no one ordered her not to and they're something like on recess maybe so she was trying. "You can want things about us, and then do them. We're not allowed. Really really not allowed." She doesn't know if they'll be angry she said that, or interrupted. But maybe they'll pay attention to her, then, and not Jany -
He smiles. It's probably the most sincere one she's ever seen. "You're allowed to want things here. Really, really allowed."
She doesn't understand, she doesn't know what happened, she doesn't know what is what they should do -
You're not allowed to argue with humans. Really, really not allowed. If a minder is drunk and says something about the mages code wrong then the other minder can yell at them and say it right a lot and there's punishment so you'll remember but you don't argue, don't, don't.
They're not allowed to want things, except some things on recess but not about humans (or not-humans-who-also-count). He also-counts but he isn't the government, they have to listen but he can't say the mages code is different.
They can't argue but they can't want. Like knowing what the code says if the minder is saying it wrong, but you don't say it.
If she should say something she doesn't know what and she looks down and doesn't say any things.
They're scaring Xan again and that's mean. This time she remembers she can't yell at them though.
He didn't say she shouldn't put it in her hair and she's on recess or something. She puts the seaweed in her hair.
Why did he say that? That's weird.
She doesn't think that means she needs to do anything, and he isn't mad and hitting her. She looks over cautiously again and then tries to catch another wave.
She didn't know they did that! She falls. And now the water is too high and she doesn't know how to swim right here and there's another wave.
She looks at the count-as-humans, but - they're like on recess maybe and the count-as-humans weren't mad when Jany hugged her and -
She runs over until she's next to Jany, tries to help her up without touching Jany's hands with hers.
Maurice tries helping as well. "You alright?"
She gets up, coughing a little.
"I don't need healing and can do work!" she remembers to say.
"You don't need to work."
She'd say yes sir but he said he wasn't a sir and not what he was instead.
(They don't do work yet because they're kids; they have classes so they can do work later. Maybe she should say 'I can do class'? But she doesn't think that's what she was supposed to say.)
She looks down and not at them much and waits to see if they're going to be mad at Jany for falling.
"You're a kid, relax."
She knows she's a kid! And that's a weird order.
She tries to follow it.
Maurice giggles at the sight.
She doesn't think that's bad?
