"OK! We can check that the chapel isn't going to dissolve into dimensional soup. And by we I mean you." She stands and gives Zana a hug. Zana returns it very unenthusiastically. "But don't try to cast anything by yourself, OK? Casting is dangerous."

"I'm not gonna cast anything."

"OK then. - Tano, are you totally sure that you can, like, stand?"

"I'm quite sure." He demonstrates.

(...that's a broken leg. Well. Not so broken he can't stand on it. And the pain's not so bad he can't act through it. Not important.)

"Well, if you're sure. Good job on the landing. If you'll follow Naomi and me to the living room then we can all try to figure out what's just happened to you."

"That sounds fascinating."

He follows her. He doesn't wince even a little bit.

The living room is decorated in much the same way that it was when this place was being occupied mostly by nuns, except that all of the crosses and crucifixes have been scrupulously removed. A few pictures of saints remain up, untouched. Also they have a bigger TV and a Wii now. Naomi, because she is a smart minion, follows Imrainai's lead, acting perfectly human and moderately concerned about the whole situation. They let Tano have the couch, and the two of them pull up chairs.

"I'm sure you must be very confused. And frightened, I'd be frightened if I fell through a stranger's ceiling with no understanding of where I was or how it had happened. I'm afraid we don't know very much more than you, though, apart from the fact that there was some sort of magical disturbance in the chapel. We might be able to reverse it, if we knew anything about where you were from?"

He sits on the edge of the couch, a little stiffly.

“I’m from Rakoshni,” he lies. “—um. That’s the city — I guess that’s maybe not helpful to you — it’s on the Yellow River? It’s — I really don’t know what you need to know, here.”

"Right, of course," she says, retrieving a notebook and pen from a nearby table. She notes the name down in IPA; spells tend to only care about pronunciation. "Can you tell me the name of your planet?"

“—sorry, my what?”

Oh wow.

There's definitely some level on which getting someone from a preindustrial society is the coolest shit.

" - this might be hard. We're gonna skip that one and come back to it. Country of origin?"

"Nisai. The southern part, near the forest. Why do you...?"

" - well, you want to go back home, don't you?"

"Of course - but I don't understand what you're doing - how did I get here?"

"Oh! Oh, of course you wouldn't know, I'm sorry!" She hands her notebook off to Naomi, who is probably smart enough to take useable notes even though she doesn't know IPA. "So the way it works is that there are entities that can do powerful magic, up to and including disturb the barriers between universes. We've been building a certain rapport with one of those entities over the course of the past few months, but it's still, um, unpredictable? And today it has - I think it has, I could be wrong about things, I'm not really an expert on magic? But I think it's decided to give us something back. Except it's maybe a little bad at, um, asking for permission and stuff."

Z returns from the kitchen with a truly incredible sandwich (it has a little toothpick in it and everything. He knows points are awarded for presentation) and sets it silently on the coffee table in front of Tano.

"...I see. And the powerful magic entities need to know my country of origin to return me there?"

He pauses, looks up at Z. "--thank you. You needn't have."

“Not a problem.”

He really wants to tell him what’s going on, but he feels like ruining Imrainai’s fun activity of the day would be...a really bad idea.

He steps back away from them and sits down against the wall.

She smiles gratefully at Z. He's being smart about this.

"Well they're not so into conversation? They are mostly into ritual," she says, as though confiding something. "And ritual requires a certain level of specificity. I don't know that there's a fully general 'send person back from whence they came' spell. Or - I guess there might be, but it might be dangerous, or whoever we got to do it might get confused and throw you back into whatever dimensional soup you came through to get here."

"I see. I appreciate your help in communicating with them, then."

"OK, well, don't thank me yet, because I actually have no idea how to send you back right now. But of course you can stay with us until we do figure it out." She bites her lip and looks over Naomi's notes. "Hm. Maybe - the entity we've been in contact with is known as Ket, and its primary affinities are children and the arts. Do you have any idea why it might have latched onto you?"

"...I do a little bit of traveling entertaining -- juggling, slapstick, that sort of thing -- I wouldn't call it art but children watch it, maybe the combination...?"

Sure he does. This could be more challenging than anticipated. Oh well, if the character gets boring then she can always give up and try threatening him into making something.

"Maybe! Maybe Zana can do something with that. We'll see. In the mean time, uh - you'll have to excuse us, we're not terribly experienced with hosting inter-dimensional visitors, but if you do need or want anything then please don't hesitate to ask."

"Thank you very much. ...do you have any idea of the timeframe to be expected, should I be asking you for a place to sleep...?"

"...possibly," she says, apparently embarrassed. "Since we, uh, don't actually know how to do this. We do have some spare rooms here, though."
