And then they can skip ahead to that evening.

"I'm just going to drop you off by the church," he says, "If I go in I'm going to have to be polite again and that's such a pain. Just knock on the trunk when you're done."

"Okay. Thank you."

In she goes.

Father Valentine is waiting for her.

"Rebecca," he says warmly, "I'm glad you came back. I've had some luck with the phone calls. I was going to ask if it was alright if we looked for proof, but I ah, think the magically appearing tree should do it. Though, if you're willing to give some more evidence that would still be helpful."

"Evidence like what?"

"A sample of you speaking in your native language and a blood sample would both help. Language has changed a lot in the last few thousand years and they should be able to tell from your blood sample that you're aren't a modern human."

"I only speak the one native language, there's just a thing happening so you can understand me. You can have... some blood? If you want?"

"We don't, ah, actually have to do it now. But, they'll want to check when you get there. I was able to get in touch with one of the priests of the more traditional branches of the Orthodox Church of Latter-Day Saints. They're currently living about eight-hundred miles south of the place you said you were from. They're happy to take you and your daughter in, as long as you're telling the truth. He did want me to mention that you'd be welcome regardless. But, if I did think you might actually be a modern person, he said you'd be better off starting in the Las Cruces community as they're more used to helping modern people get used to the lifestyle."

"If I'm welcome regardless how come they want me to prove it?"

"Someone who thinks she's from the past, but isn't, might need a different kind of support than someone who is actually from the past."

"Oh. I think I really am but I guess I wouldn't know but the language thing's gonna wear off and you can have some blood."

"I do believe you," Father Valentine said, "They're just being cautious. Also, if you're from the past, there are a few diseases that the two of you, especially Catherine, might be at risk for. So they want to check if you need any medical protection as well."

"Medical protection?"

"There's a type of medicine called a 'vaccine' that you can take to prevent yourself from getting sick."

"Okay... I'm pretty healthy though."

"It's good to be careful. The modern world has new things in it your body won't be used to."

"Bodies get used to things?"

"They do," he says with a smile, "Your body learns to fight new sicknesses from the ones it has encountered before. It's why there are some diseases you can't catch more than once. The diseases we have today are probably very different from the ones your body has learned to fight, so it might not do a good job without help."

"If you say so."

He nods.

"The two of you should see a doctor today, just to be careful, and then the Church has agreed to pay for your transport if you feel comfortable traveling on your own. If not, they can send a representative, but it'll take a few days."

"I'd... probably get lost."

"Oh, we wouldn't just be sending you off on your own!" he said, "I'd take you to meet the Captain and then there'd be someone waiting for you at the dock when you arrived. But, the question is whether you and Catherine would be okay on your own for the trip. It'd be about three to six days, depending on what other passengers the Captain picks up and where they want to be dropped off."

"That sounds probably all right then? I don't want to inconvenience you."

Then he'll arrange a doctor's appointment. It doesn't take long. Apparently this church has a doctor on call and this is close enough to being an emergency. The doctor can be available in two hours.

He can show her where to go on a map or go with her if she thinks she'll need help finding it.

"Can you come, I don't have a lot of practice with maps like this."

He smiles.

“Of course. I imagine a place like this would be overwhelming if you’ve never been anywhere like it before.”

Then he has a sudden thought, and, sounding alarmed says, “Where have you been staying? Have you and Catherine been getting everything you need? Normal babies are quite fragile aren’t they?”
