He doesn’t quite do a double-take, but he’s visibly surprised.

“...I do all right. But ... thank you.”

He nods and glances aside at his bag.

“Uh—you said it doesn’t keep, but—you know freezing works, right?”

“Yes, well, my sister gets inexplicably annoyed when I keep corpses in the freezer.”

“Does your sister not eat, or—”

“Oh.”

“My sister is also none of your business,” Jean snaps, sounding fiercer than he has in a while.

He holds his hands up.

“I’m not asking!”

"Well, don't."

"I won't."

He peers out the window.

"...you gonna be fine if somebody shows up?"

"Nobody's going to show up. ... The landlord might come look into the broken window, I suppose, in which case he will be very concerned about the housebreaking and possibly suggest I get a home alarm system installed."

"What about the wall?"

"It was a very exciting home invasion."

He laughs.

"Yeah, I guess!"

"Are there many? Ghouls like you?"

"...what d'you mean, like me?"

"You're ... trying not to kill people."

He sits down on the floor, pulls his knees to his chest.

“Yeah. I’m definitely not the only one.”

He doesn’t know how much it’s safe to tell, but that much should be.

"I need to know if it's enough that I should -- worry about prioritizing ghouls who aren't."

Oh, he really, really needs to not fuck this one up.

“I—well, yeah. Anybody watching bridges, hitting morgues — you know how easy it is to find living humans, right? — the doves don’t care whether you’re a hunter or a scavenger, they’ll kill you anyway, so anybody — not anybody, but, a lot of us — who’s looking for bodies has some reason to care.”

"The fuck's a dove," he asks, tiredly.

“Oh. A hunter. Uh, a ghoul inspector, I mean. The official ones.”

He is really not excited about the fact that there are apparently unofficial ones.

"Might be able to get them to care. Some. If I were sure it was worth doing."

"You could-"

...

"How do I make you sure?"

"Hell if I know. Show me a parade of upstanding ghoulish citizens who can prove that they've never harmed a living human and save kittens in their spare time? And I'm not saying I'd convince anyone not to kill them, mind. Only, maybe, to kill them last."
