Deskyl and Daisy meet Slayer Wrath & co.
Permalink Mark Unread

No. No. No no no no no no no. She's only barely recovered from last time they took her; she can't let them take her again.

If she draws her saber, she'll die. There's no doubt in her mind about that, outnumbered as she is and with her master right there. There's nothing she can do; he knows it, they know it, she knows it. They wouldn't do this any other way.

The flash of inspiration is more like a memory; the floating, disconnected kind that sometimes linger after... whatever it is that they do to her. It's never been quite like this before, but - she reaches into the Force, nudges it just so...

The burst of feedback - fear and rage and terror - overwhelms her; she reels, barely keeping her feet, distantly aware of the shouting, of her droid stepping forward to steady her. She ignores it as best she can, and continues nudging at the Force, carefully, carefully...

And then, suddenly, she's elsewhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Elsewhere', unfortunately, is an alleyway that includes three hungry vampires. All of whom immediately zero in on the newcomers to their alley - it's what they'd been waiting for, even if they'd been expecting something more along the lines of 'walking in' rather than 'suddenly there'.

The question, really, is 'who is it unfortunate for?'

Permalink Mark Unread

The first is cut in two before she's even oriented, her 'saber moving on instinct and danger sense alone. The second is beheaded with a barely more intentional slash; the third, hanging back slightly, may have the opportunity to run, if she's got her wits about her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does, and she does try-

Permalink Mark Unread

-except for the guy she runs directly into, who doesn't look all that surprised to be collided with, there's a short stabbing motion from one of his arms-

And the final vampire dusts.

He looks up, cautious, and still holding a...wooden? stake in one hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

The face she makes at him, lit by the red glow of her 'saber, is a little haughty, but curious, and not unfriendly. She comes out of her fighting stance, lowering the glowing blade, and gestures; her droid steps out from behind her and asks something in an unfamiliar language.

Permalink Mark Unread

He straightens as well, spinning the stake idly around his fingers. "-Yeah, not got a clue what you're saying."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries another.

Permalink Mark Unread

He responds with Swedish, shaking his head: "Still nothing."

Permalink Mark Unread

The robot steps forward, keeping a careful distance from the glowing blade, and signs to her companion.

Permalink Mark Unread

The woman peers at him, now even more curious, and the glowing blade disappears. She signs back, and then leans against the alley wall and closes her eyes; the robot says something brief and polite to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

-polite is not something he has much experience with. Pauses (because this is so not his problem).

(Except for the part where it will be if the woman with the glowing blade decides to go on a rampage.)

(And Ant would yell at him if ey ever found out he'd just abandoned someone.)

"You're not going to have anywhere to stay are you?" he doesn't expect that to get an actual answer.

Permalink Mark Unread

The robot repeats herself, just as politely.

Permalink Mark Unread

-He could just walk away. Instead he settles back on one heel.

Permalink Mark Unread

The woman stays in place for a few minutes, not moving, and then signs, just once, to the robot, who asks him another question.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could try Japanese if you want, but I think we're still going to get the same: I can't understand you."

Permalink Mark Unread

This time, the woman signs, just a beat after he speaks.

"I understand," says the robot. "Try?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...She's translating for you somehow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Translating," the robot nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right," he says, pauses. "You're not from around here are you?" He's definitely talking about more than just whatever city they've found themselves in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right," she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

This isn't his problem, and their motel room is already cramped with the three of them and-

"What are you both? You're a...robot?" aimed at the robot, and at the woman: "and you look human, but I don't think you are. Not entirely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Robot," she nods again. "DZ." And then she gestures to the woman, "Entirely human, and Sith. Deskyl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I'm gonna guess that whatever 'Sith' is, it's what's twigging me 'not entirely human' sensor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right."

Desykl signs some more, and DZ watches. "You, entirely human and..."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still for a moment. "Slayer. One girl born to every generation, yadda yadda, destined to fight the forces of evil, a lot of stuff I totally ignored, supposedly gonna have a short, violent life."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Sith fight." Her tone is conversational; it's not a threat. Probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

It gets a slightly suspicious look. "-it's probably better not to be out for much longer. More of those things," he makes a vague gesture, "might come out of the woodwork."

He tells himself it isn't an invitation (he's not very good at lying to himself).

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl straightens up when she's done translating this last sentence, and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he's really bad at lying to himself. "C'mon then, I know a back way back to our motel. Not that there's many people out right now anyway."

He steps back, not fully turning his back on them as he picks up the satchel and shopping bag he'd clearly dropped before getting involved in the fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

The robot steps forward again, offering to take the bag. "I don't fight," she explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates, watching her suspiciously, as though he could find any signs of deceit, before plucking something from the top and tucking it into his satchel, and handing over the shopping bag. "Thanks," he says gruffly.

"This way," he says, and leads on.

Permalink Mark Unread

And off they go. Deskyl watches carefully for more vampires, or any other threats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Either they're lucky, or their guide (who hasn't actually introduced himself) is keeping them away from potential threats.

It takes maybe ten minutes for them to get back to the motel he's staying at.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's another guy sat outside the room he leads them to, and while he appears human (mostly) he definitely isn't. He starts to his feet when he spots them, concern not-quite-apparent on his features.

Permalink Mark Unread

This seems like their host's to deal with. Deskyl stops a little short and finds something to lean against, again; it's also a good opportunity to get DZ some more vocabulary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ira?" And that singular word is definitely doing a lot of work in terms of meaning.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not from around here," 'Ira' fills in. "Deskyl," he jerks a thumb at Deskyl, "is apparently fully human, but something called a 'Sith'," thumb jerk at DZ, "robot is DZ. Deskyl's doing some translation thing for DZ."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And they're here, because...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because Deskyl's got a sword made out of light or something and I'd really rather know where she is?"

(That isn't the only reason, but it's a good enough one that Shin won't ask questions.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Although apparently Shin's not taking that entirely at face value.

"M'Shin," he says, pointing to himself, "That one, who I doubt bothered with pleasantries, is Ira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ant?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Asleep, for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Quiet when we go inside," he says to DZ and Deskyl. "Ant's sleeping. You can use the bed on the left."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl nods agreement when she's done signing this to DZ.

"Deskyl sleeping, I not sleeping," the robot offers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin reaches out and flicks Ira's ear. "You need anything, DZ? Power or anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Power," she nods, "and. Translating, look..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I've got a laptop with an internet connection? That help any? Or we've got a load of books..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, enthusiastically enough to suggest that this was precisely what she wanted. "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira pushes the door into the room open, and heads inside on near-silent feet.

There's faint light coming from what is probably the door into the bathroom, giving them enough light to find their way by. The two beds are pushed against the opposite walls, leaving four or five feet of space between them.

Permalink Mark Unread

The bed to the right is inhabited by another teen, who seems to be sound asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin picks a laptop up from the desk. "Trade," he whispers, nodding to the bag DZ is carrying, holding out the laptop.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes the trade readily, but doesn't seem to know what to do with the laptop.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl, meanwhile, gravitates immediately to the empty bed, and falls asleep just as quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin puts the bag down where the laptop was. "Here," he says quietly. "I'll show you."

And he demonstrates booting the computer, and how to access the browser and the search engine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira meanwhile, settles down on the bed beside Ant, back propped against the headboard, legs stretched out along the edge of the bed. Ant snuggles into him as soon as he's settled, still obviously asleep.

He doesn't seem inclined to try to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes a couple tries, but DZ gets Shin to find her a dictionary site, and she settles in to read it; it will keep her occupied for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin leaves her in peace, stretches out on Ant's other side, flings an arm over both Ant and Ira's legs, and apparently goes to sleep. (The three of them obviously have experience sharing a bed that, by rights, they shouldn't all fit on.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira is definitely not sleeping, watching DZ and Deskyl through slitted eyes, and making no effort to hide what he's doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

When DZ's done with the dictionary, she leaves the laptop and goes over to sit on the floor by the bed, as close as she can get without upsetting Ira.

"Do you have any questions for me?" she asks, very quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not from this dimension," he says slowly, "and if you're not lying about her being human, you're not from any of the other dimensions I know about. So. Can you tell me where you're actually from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The planet we were on is called Jaonus. I don't know if it's in a different universe or just a different galaxy, or a different part of the galaxy. Deskyl teleported us, and Sith can't usually teleport - they can do extra things when they're very upset, sometimes. But I don't know how it worked, because I've never seen it before. I can ask her when she wakes up, but she might not know either."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira hums noncommittally. "Is she gonna be a threat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if there's a reason for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll behave if she does." (It's trite and trying to hide his concern that he can't take Deskyl in a fight.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think she's going to threaten you, unless there's something important that she doesn't know. But she's very calm, for a Sith, and you've helped us; I think she'll help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't need any help." And that's far more defensive than true. Pauses, goes over the sentence. "If I'm not telling her something, I've probably got good reason. But if she asks, I'll try to answer."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Is there anything else you want to know? Or anything that we should know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ant's probably gonna have a million and one questions for you," he warns, smiling fondly down at Ant. "And there's like, vampires, and demons. Going out after dark here isn't super risky, but it's worth knowing they exist. Did you have any questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is magic a secret here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"By and large: yes. So are the vampires and demons. Also: we don't have robots. Not like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "It's not secret where we were before; the Sith run the empire there. Not Deskyl, though, Deskyl's an engineer - low rank, but she's very good at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our technology might be very different from what she's used to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, probably. But you have electricity, and she invents things, she'll probably be okay. She needs to recover first, though. She was hurt with magic a few months ago, very badly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira shifts, a little uncomfortable. "Think I'm supposed to stop people being hurt by magic. So, here's probably as good a place as any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. I can help pay for it, if you know of work that I can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Y'know. Given how fast you've picked up English, you could probably make a bit doing online translation."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses for a moment to consider. "I'll need to ask Deskyl before I forget another language; I'm only able to know four at once. But if she allows me to, I can do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets an eyebrow. "You need her permission." It's flat, and not a question.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think she would - hurt me, or anything like that, if I did it without permission. But I should ask anyway, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's that noncommittal hum again. "You said something about needing power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, in the next few days - longer if I don't move around very much. Deskyl will be able to make me a charger once she has parts and tools."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She gonna be up for that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, she'll be fine. It's hard for her to be awake for very long, but she can do things when she is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me know what she'll need. I can see what I can get."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll ask when she wakes up, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "If you have any more questions, let one of us know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira hums again, acknowledgement more than anything else.

Ant starts to stir against his side, a distressed whimper leaving eir lips, and his eyes leave DZ and Deskyl.

"S'okay," he murmurs, one hand stroking Ant's hair, the other reaching over to poke Shin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin stirs enough to press his lips to Ant's hair, and there's a faint glow, that slides from Ant's head and into Shin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant relaxes back against Ira's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl stirs, wakes, and peers suspiciously at Shin.

Permalink Mark Unread

He props himself up far enough to level an even look at her, half a challenge. "Ant has bad nightmares," he says. "I stop them waking em up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira looks ready to intervene if this goes further than looks.

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ and Deskyl sign back and forth, a bit.

"She's not sure that's safe," DZ reports. "But if you've been doing it for a while, it can't be too dangerous. She can check more closely later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is the first time it's been done like this," Shin admits. "My kind aren't famous for getting on with humans."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl relaxes a little at that, oddly enough.

"Well, she can check in the morning. Or now, but she might miss something. And she can do something about the nightmares herself, once she's recovered enough to make new magic effects."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira opens his mouth to say something. (Probably a refusal.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin pokes his stomach. "We can talk about it in the morning. We all-" Pauses, looks at DZ. "Most of us need more sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "That's fine."

Deskyl goes back to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin pokes Ira again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira sighs, and makes a show of closing his eyes. (He doesn't actually seem to go to sleep though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

A few hours later, an alarm goes off, and Ant gives a muted groan and tries to bury eir head under a pillow. Which is slightly hampered by Ira and Shin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira smiles fondly down at em. "Up and at 'em, Ant," he encourages.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmph," Ant doesn't sound pleased but does sit up, and then-

Stops, staring at Deskyl and DZ. "-Who are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm DZ - DZ-12Q - and this is Deskyl. Deskyl teleported us here last night and Ira invited us to stay with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Ira, as in the prickly pear sat next to me Ira? He invited you back here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "He said he wants to keep an eye on Deskyl, because she might be dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Okay, that sounds like Ira. Invite the dangerous person home." Pauses. "I'm Ant by the way, pleased to meet you!" Ey scrambles over Ira and holds out eir hand towards DZ.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates for a moment, but mirrors the gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant smiles and shakes DZ's hand. "So, you're what? A robot? -Or is there another word you prefer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Robot is fine. You don't have as many words for us as the other languages I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, what other languages do you know? I speak Swedish, and a little Japanese, but I haven't managed to pick it up as well as Ira has, and Shin isn't really a good teacher given it's not his first language and-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ant," Ira chides fondly. "Give DZ a chance to answer if you're going to ask questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's all right. I'm able to know four languages at once; right now I know the common language from where we were, and the Sith language, and Deskyl's sign language, and English. I forgot the Zabrak language to learn English; Zabraks are one kind of humanlike aliens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Oh, you know a sign language? That's really cool! What're Sith? And Zabraks? I don't think I've heard of those before? Ira tries to keep me out of the whole Slaying thing, except when something comes up that he can't ignore and he needs to do research, and then he just wants more eyes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the slaying thing is just here; I've never heard of it before. Sith are magical people with a particular kind of training; Deskyl is a Sith. And Zabraks are aliens; they're related to humans, but they have some differences - the horns are the most obvious one - and their own cultures and language."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, some of our demons have horns, and from what Shin says, they've got cultures of their own, just, a lot of it revolves around trying to end the world or eat humans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might be the same thing, I guess. But it would be strange for all the different kinds of aliens to agree to be a secret here, when they aren't a secret anywhere else. It would make more sense to give you technology and have you be part of whatever society found you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think demons are as technologically advanced as you. I think I'd end up fighting more robots if that was the case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's actually right about that. Demons seem thoroughly stuck in the Dark Ages."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Zabrak aren't demons, then, they have the same technology as anyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I resent the implication that I'm not good with technology," Shin mumbles. "I was the one who introduced you and Ira to mobile phones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You also introduced us to maple syrup, so that's really not saying much. Does your world have maple syrup, DZ? Or pancakes? Are pancakes a thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might not have the same plants that you do, but we have things similar to those, yes. Most of the kinds of food you have are similar to things we have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And they're in a completely different universe, so I can't even do a taste comparison between the different things."

Ant falls back dramatically over Ira's lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go get ready for school," Ira tells her. "There's cinnamon buns for breakfast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mean I have to go to school even though something cooler is happening here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your education's important, Ant. DZ and Deskyl will still be here when you get home."

Ant grumbles, but gets to eir feet and rummages in a case for a change of clothes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will, I'm fairly sure. Deskyl might even be awake."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant brightens a little at that. "Oh, cool!"

And skips into the bathroom, closing the door behind emself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once the bathroom door shuts, Ira turns back to DZ. "I know ey can be a bit much, but ey's overly curious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, I don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us know if that changes. Or let Ant know. Ey's good at boundaries when ey knows where they are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right," she nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin gets up, stretching. "Is there anything you like to do, DZ? Ant has school, I think Ira has work?"

Ira makes a sound that's probably assent.

"And sitting around here all day could be pretty boring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Robots don't get bored. But I should read more about your world today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some books about the nightlife," Ira points at the desk. "Internet only has conspiracy nutjobs on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin has found the cinnamon buns and is munching on one. "I'll be around as well if you have questions. Although I'm not so good with the human side of things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. Are there enough of those for Deskyl to have one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing you asked that before Ant got eir hands on these. Kid's got a thing for cinnamon."

He produces a paper plate from somewhere, puts two of the buns on it and holds it out to DZ.

"Probably wanna hide these."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ira-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not hungry."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes one and hands it back to Ira. "Sith don't need as much food as normal humans."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira takes it with a shrug, and puts it on another plate, setting it on the desk. "Ant, hurry up, you're gonna be late."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant reappears. "Relax, bro. There's plenty of time, and you don't need to walk me, it's broad daylight."

The two siblings snipe at each other, relaxed familiar, as Ant snatches up eir bag, and steals the end of the cinnamon buns off Shin - who ruffles eir hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

While that's going on, DZ wakes Deskyl. It takes a bit of effort, but the Sith startles to full wakefulness when it finally does work, and scans the room suspiciously and signs to DZ before taking the roll and watching the robot sign in turn.

When the robot is done talking to her - which has involved gesturing to each of the other three in turn, and then further gesturing to Shin and Ant - Deskyl puts the roll down and closes her eyes, and after a few moments, nods and makes a terse few signs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's keeping an eye on them, and isn't even trying to hide it.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Ant's fine, there's not a thing wrong with em, ey's a perfectly healthy teenager.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"We good?" Shin asks, almost casually.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, ey's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course I am, I've got these two idiots looking out for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Aww, cute.)

"It's better to be too careful than not careful enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you could teach Ira that, we'd sure appreciate it. The number of times he comes back blee-"

Permalink Mark Unread

That jerks Ira into motion, a hand on Ant's shoulder gently propelling em out the door. "Okay, you got school, I got work, bonding with the strangers later."

He glances briefly to Shin. "You good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're going to be late."

And then the siblings are gone. Shin looks over to DZ and Deskyl, and tilts his head.

"So, I wasn't accidentally making things worse for Ant?" (He seems invested in that answer.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, ey's in excellent health."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. That's- good. We do our best, but like," he gestures around. "We're living out of suitcases in motel rooms for a reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl nods.

"We can help with that, probably. What would you need, to have a better place to stay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A few things. We got pretty decent fake IDs, but they're still gonna want to run a credit check, and none of us are on the system enough for them to find anything, and we can't afford to pay anyone to fix that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's exactly the sort of problem Deskyl can solve with magic. Once she's recovered, anyway, she'll need to speak to do it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin snorts. "It'll give Ira time to get used to the idea. He's not good with accepting help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be a few days, yes, even if she spends the whole time asleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Option two is we just don't tell him till it happens. But I'm not sure he'll respond any better to that..." Pause. "I should probably let you sleep more, Deskyl?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's better to do any planning we need to do now, if we can. Once we're ready, she's going to make herself very asleep, and we won't be able to wake her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-yeah. That probably is wise. What exactly does Deskyl need for her to do this magic anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For this in particular, she'll tell them something in a language that they understand, and they'll believe it. She has to understand what she's saying, and it works best if they can see her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-We should be able to arrange that. I'll get a viewing we can go to. How long will it take her to learn enough to understand what she's saying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not sure when she'll be ready to actually learn the language, but she can probably learn the words for this within a week if it's something predictable."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods thoughtfully. "It probably should be. Would telling the landlord they've already done a credit check and it's fine work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Or that your credit is fine and they don't need to check. If they find evidence later that what she told them isn't true, that can break the effect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Then telling them they don't need to check is going to be smarter. I'd prefer them to barely acknowledge we exist once we have the place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll be able to help with that, too, if it's a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Occasionally people realise I'm not human. And Ant and Ira have their own reasons for wanting to make sure no-one notices them. I'd appreciate any help making sure any landlord doesn't notice those things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll be more able to do that once she knows the language, but she can help with it, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," Shin smiles. "Was there anything else we needed to figure out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm. No. Not that I can think of right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." She pauses to think, and then signs to Deskyl. "It will be better if she can make a charger for me before she's very asleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. You're probably gonna need Ira for that. But if you can tell me what she'll need I might be able to get it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we can figure it out."

They consult the internet and come up with a shopping list: Two laptop chargers to cannibalize for parts, plus a few extra components and some wire and tools. "She can use other things instead; if you can get a box of broken electronics, that will probably have everything she needs, too. But this will definitely work."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin hums thoughtfully, sends Ira a couple of texts, and gets a pretty immediate response. "Ira says he can get that stuff, I can pick it up during his break - four hours from now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Deskyl goes back to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin shrugs. "I'm gonna take a nap, wake me up if you have any questions, DZ."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, thank you."

She gets started on the books.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Shin takes his nap.

One isn't in English, and doesn't seem to have any translations to hand. The others are in English, or have hand-written translations scrawled on sheets of paper tucked between their pages (whoever did it has atrocious handwriting). The books cover a variety of different types of demon, including vampires, and 'vengeance' demons, and two types of demons from different dimensions that are theorised to be related - one that just eats dreams, the other seems to want to eat the heads of the dreamer as well. There's also information on 'The Slayer' - one human girl who's given enhanced abilities to fight the 'forces of evil' - and an organisation referred to as 'The Watchers Council'.

Does she have any questions?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some, though the books might cover most of them. How likely are they to run into various sorts of demons? Do the demons have structured organizations that might be negotiated with or disrupted, or are they stuck dealing with individuals? Are there any types of demons that are powerful enough to represent a threat to Deskyl if they manage to catch her by surprise? Who else is working on the demon problem?

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the demons they're likely to run into are the ones who're trying to end the world. For the most part, it'll just be vampires, although there's always a risk of others. If they do, none of these books have managed to figure it out - the information is mostly based on dealing with, and killing, individuals or small groups. There's one or two that might - there's a mention of a demon called Olvikan that was only defeated with a timely volcanic eruption, and another mention of something called 'Old Ones', although that seems to mostly be rumours. There's no reference to anyone else working on the demon problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems like a situation that Deskyl is well enough equipped to handle, then.

She puts the books back and goes online again, this time to look at translation jobs and find dictionaries in various languages; if Shin isn't awake by the time she's done learning Mandarin, she'll wake him to ask if they have a paypal account that she can use to be paid for her work.

Permalink Mark Unread

He isn't, but he wakes fairly easy when she tries to. And they do! Shin does some translation work. But wouldn't DZ prefer an account of her own?

Permalink Mark Unread

She and Deskyl should have one, yes. But she expects that the paperwork for it will take a few days, and she'd rather not waste that time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair. Here's Shin's account details. If that's everything, Shin's going to go and grab the stuff from Ira now?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin makes a few sandwiches before he leaves, leaving one on the desk for if Deskyl wakes up, munching on one himself, and obviously taking the other for Ira.

He'll be gone for about an hour.

Permalink Mark Unread

Daisy is in the middle of translating some text, but pauses to greet him. The sandwich is gone, and Deskyl is asleep again.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles and nods to her, holding up the box he's carrying. "Got the stuff for Deskyl here." He puts it down on the desk, plucks one of the books up, and retreats to the other bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

She waits to wake Deskyl until she's finished her work, and then switches over to helping her identify the components in the scavenged electronics. It doesn't take very long for them to have a working charger.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin's split his attention between reading and watching. "Heh, maybe you and Ira can bond over fixing things," he comments.

Permalink Mark Unread

    "She'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He probably will too if he lets himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "What's his story? She's curious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. I'm not sure how much I should say. But you've probably noticed all the references to the Slayer refer to a 'girl' right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, this language doesn't have very good vocabulary for that sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't help that as far as Ira can tell, every Slayer before him has been a girl. His parents were pretty certain that he was a girl as well, even before they found out he was a...uh, what they call a 'Potential', someone who might be called if the Slayer dies. It just got worse once they found that out. Then he was Called and well...I don't know exactly what happened, you might have noticed he's pretty prickly. About all he'll say was that he was protecting Ant, and that they're not going back." (There's a flash there, of Ant's nightmares, of a bloodsoaked hallway, and two mutilated corpses.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl doesn't seem disturbed by this in the slightest.

"That's reasonable. Some people shouldn't raise children."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No," Shin agrees, relieved by Deskyl's lack of reaction, reassured by it even. "They shouldn't. But apparently the universe just fucking sucks sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does. But it seems like he's done well enough for himself, considering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He is. But that doesn't stop him wishing he could give Ant more." Pause. "Even if ey seems pretty certain he hung the damn stars."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good that they have each other. How did they meet you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin gives a sheepish smile. "I tried to eat Ira's head. He laughed, and somehow it ended with us talking. He has form for inviting dangerous people home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems like that's working for him, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin laughs. "Yeah. And why change something that works?"

Permalink Mark Unread

    "Exactly."

"Is there anything else we should know about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin pauses, and then far more seriously than the words might seem to require: "Don't make wishes."

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ and Deskyl sign back and forth, obviously more than simple translation would require, and then Deskyl nods solemnly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," he says, equally solemn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll wait for Ira and Ant to come back, before she goes very asleep; it seems better not to surprise him with it." But the Sith re-settles herself anyway, and nods off again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably wise," Shin agrees, settling back in to read his book. "I mean, he's okay with surprises, but he's more comfortable when he knows things. Ant'll be back soon, not so sure about Ira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine. A few hours won't make much of a difference."

She goes back to the internet; she'll be more useful if she has a better idea of what the local culture is like.

Permalink Mark Unread

And fairly soon after, Ant returns. Ey drops eir bag and flops face first onto the bed next to Shin.

"I swear, if that old witch calls me 'Miss Becker' one more time, I'm gonna...I don't know. Do something."

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ looks up from her reading when Ant comes in, but goes back to it when she's not addressed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do me and Ira need to arrange something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant pushes emself back upright. "You're not allowed to kill my teachers!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I meant arrange a meeting, Ant."

Permalink Mark Unread

That, on the other hand, gets her attention. Not that she's going to interrupt; she's far too polite for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh-huh," Ant doesn't sound too convinced. "It's probably not worth the attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's upsetting you, bean, it's worth it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant shrugs. "Thanks, Shin."

Then ey looks over to DZ. "Hey. You had a good day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, thank you. Your planet is very interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's really cool that you think that! Given like." Ey waves a vague hand. "Although I suppose where you have...uh. Aliens? Non-humans? We've got demons and stuff..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have aliens, but it's unusual for a single planet or star system to have as many different cultures as you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, most demons are technically from another dimension if you're including them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's weird to think of there being less cultures in the same space..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've just been reading about the humans, this afternoon. And I think it's - you don't all have a shared language, or shared currency, and it takes more effort to travel; places here are more separate than places at home, even when they're relatively nearby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. That changes a lot. I mean. Even English. It was weird moving over from England, the dialects are completely different!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmhmm. And we have aliens who don't speak the common language, but everyone can understand it, no matter where you go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is a thing! I can understand more Japanese than I can speak! Ira and Shin use it when they don't want me to know something!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn. You've lost me that bet. Ira swore you understood more than you let on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretending I don't makes him worry less. You wouldn't think he worried as much as he does!" The last is aimed at DZ.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Kessen."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ey tilts eir head curiously. "'Kessen'? What does that mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's the gender-neutral honorific from the common language where we're from, similar to ma'am or sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's really cool! English is missing that. And I mean, the first couple of times cashiers stumbled over what to say was funny but then it just got tiring." Beat. "But, uh, you can just call me 'Ant' if you want. We don't stand on the ceremony here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-although you should call Ira 'sir' at some point. His reaction would be hilarious!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Ant"

...that's probably not what ey was asking for, tonewise.

Permalink Mark Unread

No. It wasn't, but ey isn't entirely sure how to explain otherwise. They can work on it.

"Mm. I should get my homework done," ey groans. "Reckon I can get away with linking an essay about women's suffrage to modern day gender presentation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the assignment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ey hooks eir bag strap with one foot to pull it close enough to rifle through. Ey pulls out a folder, and leafs through it.

"'Explore whether militant behaviours within the suffrage movement helped or hindered women getting the vote'. Mmph, probably not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were women expected to be less aggressive than men in the nineteenth century?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"From what I can tell, women were supposed to be meek, mild, obedient, and stay out of politics. Oh. And have babies if they were married. And look after the home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So being militant was a transgression of their expected presentation; you could write about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh," Ant says, eyes widening slightly. "Yes, yes I can. And I think I can in fact segue that into a perfectly reasonable comparison to modern day methods being used to raise visibility of the diverse gender issues we're facing now-" Ey starts mumbling at that point, scribbling notes on eir pad.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good to be useful.

DZ goes back to her reading.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just over an hour later, Ira returns. He's still got oilstains on his hands, and a smear on his head.

He looks around the room. "This is domestic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant shushes him, but glances up. Ey wrinkles eir nose. "Does any of the oil stay in the cars you fix?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not that messy," Ira retorts as he looks around. "Deskyl got the charger made okay, DZ?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good," he nods. "Mm, I'm gonna take a shower, actually. Shin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin nods and follows Ira into the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're not together," Ant says without any prompting. "Not like that at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

"Did you have any questions for Deskyl? She wants to talk to Ira, but I can wake her up now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yikes. Uh. I hadn't thought about it." Ant flicks eir pen idly between eir fingers. "Um, probably nothing that can't wait until she's feeling better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're not sure how long that will take - a few weeks, at least; probably more like a few months. And it won't hurt her to be awake for a few extra minutes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- well, if you're sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes a bit of effort to wake the Sith. When she does wake, she glances first to Ant, then at the bathroom, and then signs to DZ; after a few minutes of conversation, she nods a greeting to em.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi," Ant waves. Pause. "Are you feeling any better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"About the same. She'll be all right, though, it's just going to take a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant nods. Glances towards the bathroom. "I- when you're better, can you help Ira? He- I worry he won't come back."

Permalink Mark Unread

-ah.

    "Yes, she'll do that."

"Sith are very good fighters, but their magic is mostly defensive; she should be able to keep him safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd appreciate that. He seems to forget that 'Slayer' doesn't mean 'Immortal'." Eir eyes darken. "Most the time it means the opposite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll do the best she can. She's already planning a few things that should help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

The shower shuts off in the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant's response gets a tiny smile from the Sith.

    "You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin appears first, looking between the three of them half curiously, but doesn't say anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

A couple of minutes later, Ira follows, hair a mess from where he's roughly towelled is. It actually looks kind of fluffy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl waits for them to sit before beginning to sign.

"Thank you for the supplies," she starts with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira nods to that, but doesn't say anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are some things Deskyl wants to help with - getting us all an apartment, primarily, and improving our finances so that you can work less and have more time to train."

"She knows that you don't need the help, but she wants to help anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira has gone very still. Then he looks over at Shin looking almost betrayed.

"Is this what you were hinting at?" (There's mild panic, and a sense of not being good enough.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin moves closer to Ira, nudges their shoulders together. "We all need more space. You've said it yourself. And they can help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At what cost?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As little of one as we can arrange. It might not be perfect, but we won't ask anything of you that we don't have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira presses his lips together. He's still suspicious. (But he's still pretty sure Deskyl isn't lying.)

Shin nudges their shoulders together again.

"Credit checks are still going to be a problem," he says after a minute.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She can solve that with magic. Not right away, but when she's recovered enough to talk a little; Sith can convince people of things by saying them the right way."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Ant goes still.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then.

"-If you're sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl notices Ant's reaction, and makes a face about it; that's sufficient to get DZ to ask: "Are you all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- um, yeah. I just- mind-control. It's- Scary. To think- what the- the wrong person could do with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. She's careful with it, though; even for this she won't do it unless she's sure enough that we'll be able to pay the rent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- good, that's good."

Ant tucks emself against Ira's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

He wraps his arm around her, and kisses her forehead.

"Your assistance would be...appreciated on the matter then. We'll start looking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl nods.

"The fastest way for her to recover enough to talk is for her to go deeply to sleep for a few days; we won't be able to wake her, but she'll wake if anything dangerous happens. And she'll need a few days after that to learn what she needs to say."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira nods slowly. "Alright then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks again for this," Shin adds when it's obvious that Ira won't say it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no trouble. She wants to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin elbows Ira when he goes to snort.

"Still. Was there anything else we needed to talk about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll be hungry when she wakes up. Not desperately, but she's going to want a meal, if we can have one available for her. Other than that, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can have something," Ant confirms. "Um, is there anything we should avoid? Or anything she particularly likes? I know our foods aren't quite the same, but..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing too spicy; other than that, anything is fine."

"She says she liked the cinnamon from this morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we tend to have cinnamon things a lot. Like I said, Ant likes it. And Ira doesn't like spicy food either, so we tend not to have it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ira just doesn't like food," Ant teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira ignores em. "We'll have something."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "Thank you."

Deskyl closes her eyes, but doesn't lie down yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant goes back to eir homework, Ira flopping down next to em on the bed and closing his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin picks up his book again and goes back to that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl meditates for a little while, and then she signs briefly with DZ, and then she goes to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

And DZ goes back to translating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira wakes a few hours later as the sun is setting - Ant's finished eir homework and is drawing instead, Shin changed books. He eats the food Shin hands him with a roll of his eyes. After that, he grabs his satchel, kisses Ant's head (and whispers something too quiet to be overheard), tells the room in general that he'll be back in a few hours, and leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Slayer stuff," Shin says in DZ's direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira comes back after Ant's asleep, although Shin's stayed up, and the two of them slide into bed on either side of Ant again.

And over the next couple of days that's their routine - Ira and Ant leaving for school and work, there's a period in the evening where everyone's in where they have dinner, and Ira sometimes catches a nap, and then Ira will go out again to do 'Slayer stuff', coming back in the small hours of the morning to grab a little more sleep before he needs to go to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ notices, but doesn't comment. She spends almost all of her time working - translation, proofreading, data entry, and so on; if asked, she'll admit that Deskyl asked her to spend this time building as much of a nest egg as she can for them. On the second day, she tells Shin that she's earned enough to get her own laptop, and asks him to help her order it. And on the fourth day, in the evening shortly before Ira would usually leave, Deskyl stirs, then stretches and sits up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin's more than happy to help, and says that if DZ had asked, he'd have leant her the money to pay for the laptop so she could get it sooner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Ira had found a Moroccan restaurant near them that did takeaway and wasn't too expensive, and he'd picked up dinner from them on the way back from work - a lamb dish made with dry fruit and cinnamon, although there's a few other options from the staples they kept on hand if that's not going to work, and another packet of cinnamon rolls on top of that.

He serves up another portion when Deskyl wakes up and holds it out.

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems distant, almost drugged, not quite looking at any of them, not quite looking at anything at all, but she takes the food when it's offered, and eats. DZ signs to her, and she signs back, perfunctory one-word answers without any accompanying body language, more robotic than the robot herself.

"She'll be okay," DZ diagnoses. "It's strange here, her powers work a little differently and she wasn't expecting it. But once she meditates she'll be fine, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira hums. "I suppose that's probably to be expected in a different...hm. Well. World."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at him, signs a word.

    "Different universe, she says."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, okay. I'm off out. Anyone need anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could use a new sketchpad?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I'll see what I can do at this time of night, Bean." He looks over at DZ.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl signs again.

    "She'll go with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira raises an eyebrow. "She will? Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She repeats the sign; DZ asks her a few questions that get more one-word answers.

"It will help her remember how she's supposed to be, to go out and walk around and fight. More than meditating would."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant pokes Ira's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," Ira agrees after another moment. "You can handle yourself, I've seen that. You ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and heads for the door.

"You should know about her sword, before you go, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a moment where he startles at the 'sir', but he shakes it off. "Do I need to know anything apart from 'don't get in the way of it'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be very careful not to get in the way of it, sir - it's plasma, and it can cut through anything. It won't go where she doesn't mean for it to, but it is possible to surprise her, and she doesn't know your fighting style yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh," Ira says thoughtfully. "Noted."

And he grabs his satchel, kisses Ant's head, and crosses to the door, pulling it open for Deskyl.

Permalink Mark Unread

And off they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira doesn't seem to feel the need to try talking - it's not like he'd understand the responses anyway, and he's just as comfortable moving in silence. He does seem to have a location in mind, although his gait suggests a more aimless wander.

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows, matching his gait; she does quite a good impression of being familiar with the area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's useful. A few minutes later, he turns into an alley between two warehouses.

There's a woman leaning against a wall next to a door, she looks up, and narrows her eyes at them, looking confused. She doesn't appear to have a pulse, or be breathing. And then she lunges forward.

Ira doesn't seem inclined to move, smiling lazily.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's really pretty impressive, how vampires explode into dust when they're killed.

She looks back at him, eyebrow raised in question.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "A dead vamp is a dead vamp."

Points at the door. "Nest." Gestures to the right. "I'm going right once I'm inside. Try not to kill me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She squints, then taps her chest and gestures right. "Mh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could go left? Divide and conquer and all that crap?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face and rocks back on her heel, gesturing with her head for him to go in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira shrugs again, and does, ducking immediately to the right, spinning a wooden stake around his fingers.

People - vampires most likely - can be heard talking from both directions.

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows, saber ready but not lit yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira notices, but doesn't say anything. There's some boxes that were obviously left here by whoever the previous owner/tenant was that provide convenient cover. He reaches a point, and peers out from between a couple of boxes.

There's a group of six vampires ahead of them. Ira tucks his stake into his pocket, pulls a bottle (with a rag trapped in the neck) from his bag, lights the rag, and throws it into the midst of the vampires. It shatters and manages to set two of them alight, but the others manage to get out of the way. Ira's retrieved his stake, and is already moving out into the open space beyond the boxes to meet the four who haven't just recently been set alight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl approaches the group from the other side, letting Ira engage them for a moment while she dispatches the two flame-covered vampires, then following up by dusting the nearest of the remaining ones.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's doing pretty well for the fact he's fighting with a wooden stake and his bare hands. He's easily taken out one, and a second is in the process of dusting.

The final vampire can't seem to decide whether to go for Ira, or Deskyl, or to run. Still dithering, he yells.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gets a lightsaber blade to the sternum for his trouble, and then she moves to guard Ira from the vampires she can sense approaching.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets her a perplexed look. But he doesn't have time for much more than that because there's four more vampires to deal with.

Although they seem at least fairly wary of Deskyl and her lightsaber.

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps her guard position, handily blocking all four from getting past; they're fast, but she's faster, and has better reach. There's a sense she's actually toying with them.

Permalink Mark Unread

They hover uncertainly, attempt a few feint. They're definitely not used to dealing with someone with Deskyl's fighting skills.

Eventually though, one of them manages to get past her by sheer dumb luck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira, who up until this point had been fairly willing to leave Deskyl to it, starts to step forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

She drives the three back with a horizontal sweep - one is too slow in dodging it, and loses half his arm - and shoots a bolt of lightning at the one threatening Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira steps back smartly to make sure he's well clear of the lightning.

The lightning does in fact manage to dust the vampire. One of the ones who hadn't just lost an arm dives directly at Deskyl, shrieking something that is probably about having just killed that vampire.

Permalink Mark Unread

She was definitely toying with them before. She dusts this one, too, and then goes for the remaining fully-armed one.

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes a brave stand! But fails utterly and is very rapidly dust.

The one missing part of his arm manages to overcome his frozen fear and attempts to flee.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's faster than he is; he doesn't get far.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira is grudgingly impressed. (And he seems to be avoiding thinking about just how good she is at fighting.)

He's still for a moment, and when no more vampires appear, starts poking around the warehouse.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Deskyl finds a box to sit on, and meditates.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's no more vampires or threats in their immediate surroundings.

Ira's quick. He finds some money tucked away, and a handful of easily portable items he can fence, all of which gets tucked into his bag. That done, he returns to Deskyl, but doesn't immediately disturb her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She opens her eyes as he approaches, and stands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"More fighting?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gestures from him to the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Well, he'll head towards the door then, he was done in here anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll let him lead, if he wants to lead. If not, she knows where the nearest gathering of vampires is.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's pretty easy on who's leading, and if she seems to have a direction in mind is willing to go with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nearby vampire nest it is, then. She's no less competent at clearing out this one, but a little more inclined to let him fight, and to watch him doing it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's pretty competent at fighting the vampires himself, definitely knows how to handle them, but he doesn't seem to be particularly avoiding the potential for non-fatal injuries.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not too happy about that, and steps in the first time it looks like he might get significantly hurt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira gives her a somewhat irritated look, but doesn't say anything, and declines to be any more careful in his fighting style.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next time, she lets him cut it a little closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He actually tilts his head to one side as a vampire lunges at him, and while his stake is ready at his side-

(They're not likely to be overwhelmed, their efficiency has it down to the last few vampires, and this attack does seem to be a last ditch attempt at survival.)

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a little alarming. But he does clearly know what he's doing; she'll allow it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The vamp's fangs manage to just graze Ira's skin before the vampire is dust.

And with that, they're basically done, assuming Deskyl handled the last two?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, of course.

She checks for more vampires again, but it seems like they've got this part of town pretty well cleared out, at least for the moment. Home?, she asks, with a tilt of her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, home. Ira shoves his hands into his pockets, and kicks at the pavement as he walks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- appreciate your ability," he says carefully, not sure how much she'll understand. "But I can look after myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Not much, apparently. She shrugs, and keeps walking.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Yeah, he can deal with that when Deskyl actually knows the language.

He's silent for the rest of the walk home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin's waiting outside again. "Good hunt?" he asks, looking between the two.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs, and looks to Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine," Ira says shortly. "Your night?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quiet."

Shin pushes the door open and leads them inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant looks up from the book ey's reading and waves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl waves back.

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ is at the computer, but looks up, from Ira to Deskyl, and then signs.

Is everything all right?

Not really. Stable. He doesn't protect himself much and was annoyed when I protected him.

That might be a gender issue. Women are protected and men do the protecting, here.

That's dumb. But it explains it.

Yes. Should I say anything to him?

Explain how Sith do it, maybe.

All right. "Ira?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah?" he says, looking over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deskyl asked me to explain: Sith pay much less attention to gender than your culture does; there's no difference in magical strength between men and women, and that's what matters to them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh. I like it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I'm- confused as to why you're telling me this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...she said you were annoyed, earlier, and that was our best guess as to why."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-What did the idiot do this time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was fine," Ira complains - but he doesn't seem particularly inclined to actually hide what was going on. "Deskyl just...over-reacted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She says you were taking unnecessary tactical risks."

Deskyl taps the side of her neck, where Ira was nearly bitten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin abruptly turns to Ira, forcing his head to the side, inspecting his neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira tilts his head obediently. "I'm fine, I dusted it before it got a bite."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant's twisting eir fingers together. "I- thank you, Deskyl," ey says. "Ira-" Ey doesn't seem to know what to say.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's not going to let him get hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good," Ant states emphatically. "Let her help," ey says to Ira, standing up and moving over to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates and then reaches out and pulls Ant into a hug. "Okay, Bean," he says. "Okay. I'm sorry. I- I'm okay."

He looks at Deskyl and Daisy over Ant's shoulder. It's not gratitude on his face exactly, but it's something close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl softens a bit, and nods an acknowledgement.

"It wasn't necessary, but it wasn't as risky as it sounds. He's very good at fighting."

Permalink Mark Unread

-The compliment definitely seems to throw Ira.

He covers it admirably. "I- think that it's probably bed time." (Oh. Look: a Distraction.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, they can work on that.

Deskyl goes to talk to DZ, leaning on the desk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant grumbles, but lets Ira guide em to bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira manages to extract himself from eir arms and grabs a change of clothes on his way to the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin slides in next to Ant in his place, wrapping an arm around em and letting em snuggle in close.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is pretty nice.

    "Good night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"G'night," Shin mumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira comes back through a few minutes later, looking...young, in a way he hadn't before, now that he's dressed in an oversized t-shirt and jogging pants.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to look at apartments with us?", DZ asks, quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira tilts his head, then shrugs. "Sure," he agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ shows him the listings she's been collecting - seven apartment options, all with at least two bedrooms, and two houses, all available for less than they've been spending on motel rooms every month, all in neighborhoods with reasonable crime rates and bus service. Two of the apartments would allow Ant to stay in the same school, and those are the least expensive, but also the most dangerous; the rest of the options would require em to switch to better-rated schools in the same district.

Deskyl would prefer one of the houses: she does better without neighbors quite this close, since her magic senses work through walls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira considers them. He obviously leans slightly towards the less expensive ones, but-

But a better-rated school would be better for Ant. (And he can't deny that being further away from other people would be nice.)

"Would need to ask if Ant's okay moving schools," he settles on eventually.

Permalink Mark Unread

    "That makes sense."

"Are there any that you want to rule out? Or anything else you'd like me to check, about these?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've been pretty thorough," Ira admits, but does rule out the apartments that would involve Ant changing schools.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

They can ask the others in the morning. For now, Deskyl and DZ go outside to practice with the language.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira settles into the chair, kicking his feet up on the end of the bed that Shin and Ant are sleeping in.

He watches them quietly, but is still keeping an ear out for Deskyl and DZ coming back in.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're out surprisingly briefly, perhaps fifteen minutes, and yet Deskyl is clearly exhausted when they return and goes straight to bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Well. If what DZ's said about how Deskyl was hurt is true, and given everything else, he doesn't really blame her for being exhausted.

With her back in bed, he lets himself drift off.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the night is quiet. Deskyl is still asleep when the others wake up, and DZ is as usual working on a translation project.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a weekend, so Ant rolls over and goes back to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira leaves, but is back barely an hour later, grumbling quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is everything all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I had to guess," Shin says, "I'd guess that Ernie threw him out - uh, his boss."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Basically," Ira agrees. "I don't even know what his problem is, it's not like-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were you even supposed to be working today?"

Ira's silence is probably telling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deskyl wants to spar with you, if you need something to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's quiet for a moment. "Well, got nothing better to do. We can use one of the warehouses we cleared last night, I doubt they'll have new tenants yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will I be able to join you?" she asks, as she moves to wake the Sith.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Can you wear clothes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, if they're not too warm."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira pulls out a lightweight hoody and lightweight trousers. "Keep the hood up and no-one will look twice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Deskyl stirs and, after a brief exchange, helps the robot dress herself, and then they can go.

"She wants to know if you'd be interested in a plasma dagger, like her sword," DZ conveys, after a few minutes' walk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-That. Would likely be useful," he agrees carefully, obviously still wary of intentions and prices.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She thinks so, yes. It'll take a little while; you'll need to grow the focusing crystal, and she might need to make a custom battery for it. But it'll suit your strengths better than what you're using now, she says."

Permalink Mark Unread

He snorts. "Yeah. Stakes are kinda traditional, and I'm a bit leery of trying to source a broadsword."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You would benefit from something with more reach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps," Ira agrees with a shrug. "I can use a sword, I just don't have one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl nods.

"She believes you. But only very small plasma weapons are safe for people without telekinesis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Yeah, that seems likely. And telekinesis is not something that comes in the Slayer powerset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do well with what you do have, though. Mostly, she says - it looks like you were trained for a little less strength than you have now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, the strength upgrade comes with being a Slayer. Strength, increased speed, better reflexes, better senses, god awful nightmares..."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "Does Shin help with those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Harder with me. The nightmares are sometimes warnings apparently? Prefer not to get side-swiped."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deskyl can help with that, probably. She wouldn't stop you from having the dreams, just from being upset during them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I'll think about it. Here we are."

He pushes the door to the warehouse open.

Permalink Mark Unread

And in they go. Deskyl takes a moment to check for inhabitants, first thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless you count a handful of pigeons nesting in the rafters. There's certainly no other humans or humanoids.

Ira puts his ever-present satchel down on one of the boxes, and sheds his jacket as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl left her cloak at the motel, so she's ready to go. She takes a position in the middle of the empty floor and bows to Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks at that but-

Gives a brief, unpractised, perfunctory almost-bow, and then readies himself to meet an attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

She falls back into a fighting stance, first, to make absolutely sure that he's prepared, and then she does. She starts gently, but doesn't stay gentle for long, quickly matching her apparent capabilities to his, pulling her punches just enough to avoid leaving bruises. He'll notice fairly quickly that it's surprisingly easy to bluff her - there's something odd, there, if it was really that easy to mislead her she wouldn't be so competent in an actual fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, he's a bit suspicious about that, but for now, will use it to his advantage. He's pulling his own punches, but definitely has far less experience doing that than she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

She consistently dodges any that'll hit too hard. It's actually pretty good feedback, if he manages to pick up the pattern.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why yes, he does notice a pattern, and pretty quickly. And he starts doing better at pulling his punches.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flashes a sign to DZ, when he goes a couple minutes without hitting too hard. "Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks startled at the praise, but hides it quickly behind another feint and attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's getting better at catching the feints, but not so good that he can't tag her, yet. And on they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

He actually seems to be enjoying this, even if he's surprised when he recognises that. After a while though, he starts to flag a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps going for half a minute or so, and then slows and signs to DZ again. "She'll stop whenever you're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira hesitates for a moment. "A breather would be appreciated," he says. "Time to grab a quick drink."

Permalink Mark Unread

She disengages as soon as he does, and goes over to talk to DZ.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira crosses over to his satchel, pulls out two bottles of water. "Deskyl?" he says, tilting one towards her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and the bottle goes light in his hand as she points at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets go of it, and turns his attention to the other one, opening it and taking a long drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

It floats over and she drinks as well, still signing with her other hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira perches on the box beside his satchel, and watches her and DZ while they sign as he sips on his water.

Eventually though, he puts his bottle to the side, tilts his head at Deskyl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their conversation - if it was one, it looked rather more like Deskyl was giving DZ a status update - has wound down, by then, and she hops back up, ready for another round.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can go back to sparring.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fun!

She takes a more proactive approach, this time, taking advantage of the fact that he's not going to hurt her to point out the weaknesses in his defensive style, falling back to demonstrate a correction every time she manages to tag him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The major noticeable weakness is probably that he doesn't precisely have a defensive style. Not a coherent one at least.

He takes the corrections though. (And is there surprise that her tagging him when he fails to block her doesn't, really, hurt?)

Permalink Mark Unread

She calls a halt after a bit of that.

"She says she's not impressed with whoever trained you," DZ relays. "You're doing well with what you know, but it looks like they didn't even try to teach you how to defend yourself properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira snorts. "How d'you know I didn't just ignore them when they tried?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wouldn't know as much as you do. Or it'd be more random, what you do know. There's a pattern to what you don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "I guess they just weren't that invested in my survival."

Permalink Mark Unread

She clearly has an opinion about that, one that'd be fairly dangerous for the people in question if they were here right now.

"Well, she is. And teaching you individual moves isn't a very good way of closing the gap; she'd like to teach you some katas."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs again. "Yeah, sure. Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

And so she teaches him katas. She has a defensive style in mind that she thinks will mesh well with his current habits, but it's too advanced to jump right into; she demonstrates it anyway, briefly, and then goes through the katas that lead up to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira applies himself to what she shows him, and can certainly see the benefits of the style she's suggesting. He seems wary when he makes mistakes, like he's waiting for repercussions.

Permalink Mark Unread

None are forthcoming; she's very patient about going over each section until he's got it.

"You'll be ready to try the Fasuna style when you can do these without having to think about it - a few weeks, maybe, if you can practice every day. It's fine if it takes longer, though, she knows you're busy."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I'll do what I can." (And there's a quiet resolution there.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything else you'd like to do today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not with this. We should probably go ask Ant about schools."

Permalink Mark Unread

That's fine with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Ira doesn't seem particularly inclined to make conversation on the walk back. Unless Deskyl or DZ has something to say?

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really have done well with everything, she says. You would have been a good Sith, if you were a Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles a little at that, almost shy. "This is one of the things I can do. Even if I'm- missing parts. Like defence."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl nods, some of her earlier annoyance at whoever trained him showing up again in her body language.

"That's not your fault, of course. You should have been trained better. And you've done very well with what you do know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Haven't really had a choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, that happens. It doesn't make your accomplishments any less your own, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's quiet for a moment. "Thanks," he mumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sith don't have very much choice, either. They don't have many laws, but that's one of them: people who can learn to be Sith are rare, and when they're found, the Sith who finds them has to either train them themselves, or send them to Korriban to be trained. She wanted it - she was young, and didn't understand what it would be like - but it wouldn't have mattered if she didn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira nods slowly. "I sometimes think that the Slayers the Council didn't find were the lucky ones. Didn't have to put up with the bullshit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Council keep a pretty tight reign on their Slayers, have pretty set ways they think things should be done. Fighting alone, that kinda thing. And if you survive till your eighteen birthday, well. They take away everything that makes you a Slayer and drop a Master vampire on you. Supposed to prove you can fight with more than just your strength. Pretty much just a death sentence. A few years or freedom, or a few years on a leash? I'd take the freedom."

Permalink Mark Unread

     "What the fuck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty much my feelings. If you have specific questions I can try to explain, but I stopped trying to understand how the Council's minds worked once we ran."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would take a lot for that to make sense. Even if you're replaceable - if they don't care at all about individual slayers as people - you're still an important strategic resource; they did put effort into training you, and they have to find the new slayer and bring them on board. They shouldn't want to throw that effort away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they're worried that if they let a Slayer get to the point where they're legally an adult they'll lose any control they have." He shrugs. "That's just how it was."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "It's still idiotic, she says."

"She wants to know if they still exist, and if you want to do anything about it if they do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're on the other side of an ocean. They...surprisingly haven't tried to track me down yet, not that I've noticed. I might- Maybe. One day. But not now."

Permalink Mark Unread

    "All right."

"She's going to go after them herself, at some point, whether you want to join her or not. She's not sure when; after she's recovered and you and Ant and Shin are settled, at least, and maybe later. Or if anything happens to you she's going to go right away, she doesn't want to let them have the next Slayer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira gives an almost-laugh. "Okay, you're not gonna get an argument from me that something needs doing about them. Just- once Ant's okay. I can't- I need them to not be able to touch em."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's more important right now, definitely. And she does need to recover, to do the best job of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira nods.

And then: they're back at the motel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant greets them with a wave. "Good sparring session?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deskyl enjoyed it, yes. I think Ira did, too." Ira?

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives a small smile. "Nice to be fighting when I'm not trying to kill something." Beat. "She's teaching me defensive stuff as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. You needed it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's done very well with what he did have. But yes, he'll benefit from some better training."

"You could join them, sometime, if Ira is okay with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh. Can I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's quiet for a moment, then nods. "Probably better that you know how. I should've thought of that sooner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Next time, then. Right now we have a question about moving, for you - do you care about staying in Greenville High?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ey shrugs. "Not really. It's a school. The teachers are inane at best, and ignore my preferences at worst."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." She has the computer booted up already; she brings up the house listings. "These are the places we're looking at, then."

Both have three bedrooms; one has an unfinished basement that they can use as a gym, a bigger living room, and a balcony, but the other is a little bigger overall - the extra space comes in the form of an office - and has a nicely planted backyard, and it's more convenient to the buses.

"I expect you'll want the first one," DZ says, when she's gone over both of them. "The office isn't as much of an advantage as the basement, and I expect you'll be able to get a car soon." (Deskyl nods agreement.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it does look better overall," Ant agrees. "Also: balconies are always cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Deskyl will like this one, especially, it has a good view of the sunset."

Deskyl signs to her. "We'll leave you two to talk to Shin about it; Deskyl is ready to practice speaking again."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant nods. "Sunsets are always nice to watch," ey agrees.

Then ey goes to poke Shin who has been napping through this entire conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

And so she practices. It's tedious work, mostly, with her being functionally deaf: DZ picks a word in the Sith language that contains the next sound in the phrase, and coaches her through extracting it and adding it to what she has memorized. Exhausting, too; it's hard for her to speak, hard for her to think about sounds at all, and sometimes she spends half an hour just trying to remember how to say the word that has the next sound in the sequence. But she keeps at it, with the occasional break to meditate or nap or practice 'saber forms, and after not quite a week of effort, she's ready.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin sets up a viewing with landlord, managing to arrange it for an evening when Ira's available as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I really need to come?" Ira grumbles. "Figure between you and Deskyl you've got it covered."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," Shin states firmly, looks to DZ. "Are you coming with as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it safe?"

"Deskyl will be able to read Ira's mind well enough to know what's going on, you'll be okay without me if it isn't safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Probably wiser not to risk it on the bus," Shin admits. "Not until we're actually moving. Hey, Ant, you ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- mean, I don't want to leave DZ on her own?" Ant says, obviously torn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be all right. Thank you, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you're sure," Ant smiles slightly and nods, and then propels Ira out of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll be back shortly," Shin says, probably needlessly as he holds the door for Deskyl.

Permalink Mark Unread

And off they go.

The house is all right. The decor is a few decades out of date, and it shows some wear and tear; if the appliances are in similar shape, that might give them a little trouble, but it's not like Ira isn't handy, or Deskyl for that matter. And the neighborhood is nice, and the view from the balcony is gorgeous.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant is enthusiastic, although clearly trying to not be too obviously that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira pokes the appliances thoughtfully, and obviously makes a couple of mental notes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin asks the landlord a couple of questions, and once he's satisfied with the answers, and with the fact that both Ant and Ira seem happy enough.

He nods slightly to Deskyl, and engages the landlord in a conversation about how to move forward with deposits and lease-signing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's leaning against a nearby wall, and manages to not obviously react when the landlord brings up the need to do a credit check.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Their credit is fine, you don't need to check it," she asserts, with a subtle wave of her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

The landlord looks briefly confused and then nods slowly in agreement. After that, Shin handles the details of how they'll pay the deposit and when they'll sign the lease and move in - the end of the week.

He looks around at the others to make sure they're satisfied.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant's grinning, and Ira looks about the same as ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl gives a subtle nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then, they can head back to the motel. "I've got the stuff ready for Ant changing schools," Shin says quietly as he opens the door. "I'll call in the morning and let them know ey'll be starting Monday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Thanks," Ira's response is nearly subvocal.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It went well, I take it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh-huh," Ant confirms. "We can move in at the end of the week."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very good. Will you need any help with anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably not, we're basically living out of our bags as is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So long as you and Deskyl are ready, we're good. Although. At some point, we're gonna want to get Deskyl some ID."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, that would be a good idea. Of course she won't have whatever documents are required."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin laughs. "Neither did these two. I know a few people. It won't be a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Uh. She doesn't have any problems with photos being taken of her does she? I know some people can take issue with that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, that will be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll make some calls. Shouldn't take too long. Might not be sorted the end of the week though, depending on who's got time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will that be a problem?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she wants her name on the lease, possibly. If not, probably not. More just...warning you about the timing, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure whether she'll want that or not. Can it be fixed later, if she does?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin hums thoughtfully. "I'm sure it can be done, but I'm not sure how easy it would be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't expect it to be a problem in the short term, then. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe have her look at names if she's up to it," Ant suggests. "New ID papers are a good time to reinvent yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...maybe. I'm not sure she wouldn't be upset at the suggestion, though. She would have earned a new name when she killed her master, but she didn't manage it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

The water bottle in Ira's hand crackles as his grip tightens. "Given what I saw of her fighting, he must've been keeping her pretty beaten down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was - very bad, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's something she can think about."

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers. "I don't think she'd appreciate me mentioning it; if she wants to change her name, I expect she'll just do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need a name to put on the ID, and...hm, surname? Suppose I could just add to the Becker family..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That mean I get a cool older sister as well as two cool older brothers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She might like that. I'll ask her when she wakes up again."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant grins, and then flops down onto the bed with a book.

Permalink Mark Unread

And DZ gets back to work.

The next time Deskyl is awake, they go over a list of translations of 'sunset', and she settles on the Swahili for her surname: Machwa.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin gets photos of her at the same time. He's hopeful for having ID ready for Friday, but can't promise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This wouldn't be a problem if you hadn't killed Dalliard," Ira comments, throwing a chip into his mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No," Shin agrees mildly, stealing a chip from the packet in Ira's hands. "But if I hadn't killed Dalliard, we would've had other problems. Like his very flexible approach to the concept of consent."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"He did good, fast work, and I needed to be sure he was gonna keep his mouth shut."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's very dead," Shin assures Deskyl. "And I got him before he managed anything. I don't know what was going through his head to even threaten that, if I hadn't killed him, someone else in his line of work would've. Forgers shouldn't really even threaten to turn their clients over to the authorities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's good that he's dead, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it is," Shin agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

And come Friday morning, Ant is reluctantly getting ready to school. "Why can't I help us move?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira ruffles eir hair. "Because your education is important, Bean. And we've got moving covered between us four." He gestures to Shin, Deskyl and DZ.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant grumbles, but leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys ready?" Shin asks DZ and Deskyl.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmhmm." She checks the weight of the bag DZ's prepared for her, and then slings it over her shoulder.

"Shall I call the cab now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin glances at Ira, and then smiles back at DZ. "Yeah, go for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does; they'll be by soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin gives the room a last once over to make sure they haven't forgotten anything, and then goes to take care of checking out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira perches himself on the curb next to their bags, humming absently as they wait on the taxi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl waits in the room with DZ, for now; no point in attracting more attention than they have to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin comes and taps on the door when the taxi arrives. "You guys ready?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, sir. Could you get the door, please?"

Deskyl carries DZ out and to the car, as if she were an unactivated prototype of herself, and arranges her in the middle of the back seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's taken the front seat, and fends off the driver's questions with a sharp look, and a flat: "Not your business."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Deskyl and DZ, with no ability to communicate unless they want to give the droid away, sit quietly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The drive, thankfully, doesn't take too long, and Shin takes care of paying the driver while Ira grabs their bags.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Deskyl wrestles DZ out of the cab and totes her into the house, leaving her to look around while she goes back for their bag.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will meet Ira and Shin just about managing all their bags between them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a bag from each of them - she will absolutely stare Ira down if she has to - and brings them in.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's figured out she's about as stubborn as he is, and lets her with only a token protest.

"You guys go ahead and pick out a room," he tells her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'd like the master bedroom, so she'll have room to set up a workshop. She can use part of the basement for it instead, though, if you'll be too cramped otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin laughs. "We've been living in each others back pockets for a while, this is going to be positively luxurious, go ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl nods, and goes to get set up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin and Ira can be heard setting up one or other of the rooms.

After a little while, Ira comes and taps on Deskyl and DZ's door.

"I'm heading to pick Ant up," he says. "Gonna take em shopping on my way back, you guys need anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so." She checks with Deskyl. "No, sir, thank you."

They have a lovely evening, nice takeout eaten on the balcony while DZ shares poetry and songs from her and Deskyl's home and encourages the other three to share as well. After dinner, Deskyl goes to the basement to practice with her lightsaber.

Forty minutes later, she bursts back upstairs, wild-eyed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira is already surging to his feet before she actually bursts anywhere - and where the hell did he even pull that knife from??

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin's straightened somewhere he's sitting.

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ takes a little longer to react, and Deskyl doesn't wait for her, pulling her upright and then signing at her, pacing, intermittently looking up at a point somewhere off behind the house.

"She says - there's another one of her, a child, near the edge of her sensory range - being tortured. Not - not right now, but ongoingly. I don't know what she means by another one of her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira swears quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How far away is the edge of her sensory range?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ten, maybe fifteen miles - it'll be farther for something like this, I'm not sure exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's quiet for a moment. "We're going to need a car then."

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ relays this; Deskyl glares at her. Her mood doesn't improve in the exchange that follows, but DZ apparently wins. "How long will that take, sir?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as it takes us to find a car that isn't in this neighbourhood to boost. I'm not stealing a car from here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl calms, a bit, at that, and goes back to pacing.

"The new one might not be able to talk, or to hear very well; Deskyl uses the Force for those. She'll bring me to translate. Shin - we'll need someone preparing, here; she'll sleep in our room but make up the couch just in case, please, and food and water and medical supplies - Deskyl isn't sure what's wrong but she could tell she's in poor condition physically. Tell Ant what's going on, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got it covered," Shin assures them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'mon then," Ira says, already heading for the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl certainly doesn't need to be told twice.

She'll favor a larger vehicle, given the choice, but mostly she just wants to be on her way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira finds a people carrier - not ideal, but it's the best he's managing on short notice - hotwires it, and gets them on their way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good enough.

She takes shotgun and points him in the right direction, dropping into meditation once they're on their way.

It'll be a half-hour drive if he sticks to normal speeds, but what's the chance of that, here?

Permalink Mark Unread

Speed limit, what's that?

He doesn't quite halve their travel time, but it's a close run thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hisses, a few minutes in, and signs once to DZ: "She's been starved, sir."

She reacts again, a couple minutes later, slapping the dashboard hard enough to leave a dent - "There are dozens of them."

She's quiet for the rest of the trip, grim, tense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's hands tighten on the steering wheel. "-We've not got the resources to take all of them," he says, voice tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She knows, sir."

She shifts, as if to tap Deskyl to get her attention, but apparently thinks better of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira doesn't say anything to disturb them.

Permalink Mark Unread

The last couple miles are along a wooded back road; Deskyl points out when their destination is coming up. "No combatants, she says; she'd like you to stay with the car, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, why not, I'm just the chauffeur here." He doesn't sound entirely happy about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The faster we can leave, the less likely we are to be followed, sir."

A sign just past the turnoff declares the sprawling building beyond it to be the White Willow Youth Asylum. Deskyl doesn't wait for the van to stop before getting out; she ignores the building's entryway, but darts around to the side and begins destroying a section of wall with her lightsaber, cutting first at a steady, measured pace, and then faster, abruptly, after the first handful of blows. DZ catches up to her just as she's putting the weapon away, and stands clear as the Sith grabs the damaged section with the Force and pulls, strewing rubble across the grass at her feet.

A figure in a nightgown scrambles out of the hole as she's recovering her balance: Deskyl's report that their target is another instance of herself seems to be literally true; the girl could be her twin, a decade younger and quite underweight. She looks around, and then flinches at something behind herself; Deskyl surges forward, protective, and scoops the girl up onto her hip as if she were a much younger child, 'saber out and lit again.

The Sith doesn't turn her back to the building as she and DZ make their way back to the van.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's waiting, in the driver's seat, but with the car turned for a quick get away. He restless and impatient.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl lets the girl go, and the three of them pile into the back. She signs once to DZ, who relays the message as the van pulls off: "They saw her, but she doesn't think we'll be followed. She should notice if we are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's quiet for a moment. "If getting home isn't critical, I'm gonna dump this car and pick up a different one, take the long route home."

Permalink Mark Unread

DZ tries to relay this to Deskyl, but the Sith is distracted watching her young counterpart and doesn't respond. "That will be fine, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mnuh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira shrugs. "Might be overkill, but I'd rather not take any risks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Deskyl seems fixated, staring at the girl; for her part, she's looking back and forth between the Sith, the droid, and the driver, not sure what to make of any of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's Ira, Ma'am," DZ puts in after a second. "And this is Deskyl, and my name is DZ. Deskyl is from another world, and has magic; that's how she noticed you. We came as soon as she did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmh. D'niece," she taps her chest, and then gestures vaguely at the interior of the car.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes ma'am. We don't have a car of our own, but it was very important to Deskyl that we come get you as soon as we could."

Permalink Mark Unread

Denice makes a face at this, directed at Deskyl, who signs back.

"She says you're more important than a car, ma'am."

Denice doesn't stop making the face; there's more signing.

"The other children are, too, but we couldn't take all of them, and you're the most important to her."

"You can help her figure out what to do about it, now that you're free. Or she'll help you, if you'd rather."

"Mnh," Denice allows, and shifts to lean against Deskyl and watch the road.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira finds a suitable replacement for their first stolen car and it doesn't take him particularly long to have them back on the road again, and even though he takes the long route, he still seems to not really have a concept that speed limits apply to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The three in the back are quiet for the rest of the ride home, Denice watching the scenery and Deskyl watching Denice and DZ watching the both of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

When they drop the car off on the other end, Deskyl immediately hurries Denice toward the house, but DZ stays behind for a moment to talk to Ira before he takes the car away from the house. "Thank you, sir. I know she isn't showing it much but Deskyl does appreciate your help."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira shrugs, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "S'not like I don't owe her."

Permalink Mark Unread

She is perhaps taken aback by that; it's never very easy to guess what her odd pauses mean.

"As far as I can tell she doesn't think you do. I can ask, if you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs again. "Some debts just are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I think she'd like to know you feel that way, sir; Sith don't work like that. But I don't have to tell her if you'd rather I not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure she has more important things on her mind right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- yes sir." She heads in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin eyes them as they come back in. "Something happen?" he asks, eyes narrowed at Ira - who doesn't even acknowledge the question.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll tell you later, sir. Which way did Deskyl go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shin points.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira has grabbed his bag by this point and is on his way back out the door.
