She waits until she's sure they're gone and... walks over to the window to see if it opens.

No, the windows are set directly into the walls.

She could break them.

Or she could let this happen. Have a hot bath. Wait to see where this takes her...

It's a terrifying thought.

She quickly undresses and gets in the bath.

The absence of her master in her mind, directing her, is striking.

She would feel empty... except she's never alone. She can feel Destruction pushing at her control with a renewed vigor. It won't be long before Devera is completely overtaken.

But for now... she still has enough will to hold it back. She can do this.

Bea knocks on the door, calling out to ask her if she is all right, but leaves when she doesn't get a response. A servant leaves a small plate of bread, cheese and fruit.

The rest of the inhabitants leave her be.

She stays quiet and lies in the water until it goes cold, calming her mind and establishing control.

Eventually, she gets out and dresses in clean clothes from the closet. The thought of putting back on the clothes she came in is not a good one.

She ignores the food and goes to sit in a corner to wait. She's not even sure what for. But still she waits.

Bea returns, knocking on the door.

"May I come in?"

"It's your place. Yeah."

Bea opens the door and walks in, looking apologetic. "I'm sorry, but we're about to open for the night. I'll need to move you into the courtesan's quarters. You won't be bothered, we just need the suites free for customers."

"Your house, your rules."

She stands and follows her.

Bea smiles, shoulders lowering in relief. "Thank you, cariño mío. We don't want to make you uncomfortable, any friend of Zevran's is a friend of ours, but we must keep business flowing."

She leads Devera downstairs, and into a cramped dressing room. "Elezi has offered you her bed for the evening. She is an escaped slave too, wants you to know that if you need to talk, she is here." Bea smiles, then a man taps her shoulder, nodding at the clock. "Oh dear. First arrivals will be coming through. I'm sorry, I must attend the main floor. If you need anything, the serving girls are always around."

With that, Bea bustles off.

...okay. She looks around the room for an Elezi.

There is a girl with brown skin, hair braided back, clearly dressed as a Tevinter magister. Or at least, what everyone thinks they dress like.

It's not quite right, but the spirit of it is there. Homey.

She represses her revulsion and walks over to her.

"Elezi?"

She looks up and smiles.

"Welcome. Isn't their tongue barbaric!" Elezi says, entirely in Tevene.

"It's not so bad. Kind of musical," she replies in the same.

"Dwarven nonsense, I think you mean." Elezi gets up to lean closer into a mirror, checking her make up. "You're welcome to my space. I'm sorry it's not much. Comfortable enough, though."

She steps closer.

"Thank you." She pauses and looks closer at her makeup. "What look are you going for here?"

"What an Antivan thinks a Tevinter Magister looks like. Terrible, isn't it?" Elezi finishes with a sweep of blush. "A Magister doesn't need all of this to seduce."

There is a bitterness to her tone.

She hums in ambivalence.

"Shouldn't use the green. Red and gold are most common."

"I know, exactly! But, the madam will not be denied." Elezi pulls a face at herself in the mirror.

She turns around to face Devera. She notices Devera's ear isn't cut, like other elven slaves she had seen. "You got out before they marked you? Lucky. You'll be much harder for them to find."

"Master is dead and was secretive." She shrugs.

"You're not the first one I've met that had a master like that. Some of them liked to entertain the idea that their slaves loved them too."

It wasn't just an idea. It was how Devera survived, loving her.

Elezi does not notice this.

"Well, I better get upstairs if I'm going to earn my keep. I look forward to more conversations." With that, and a charming grin, Elezi is gone upstairs.
