this is gospel for the fallen ones
'Chelledad helps Nova and Zevran
Permalink Mark Unread

It's late, and Aaren would really rather be anywhere than walking down the dark streets with his collar turned up against the damp drizzle trying to soak him through. 'Chelle isn't going to be happy with him, he'd said he'd call if he needed a lift (which he did), but when his text had gone unanswered, he assumed she was asleep. And she didn't get enough sleep, and a father worried.

But it left him out here in the damp, freezing air as the last vestiges of autumn gave up and let winter take over.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's sounds of struggle coming from the closest alley.

A gravelly, adult voice, "Get the fuck away, boy!"

A younger, accented one, "Get away from him or I'll slit your miserable throat!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Another younger voice, scared, panicked. "Zev, no- Zev, please- I-"

Permalink Mark Unread

-Shit.

Aaren breaks into a run, heading straight into the alley, not willing to waste time-

He skids to a halt, trying to take in the scene before him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two young boys, one darker skinned, are backed against the wall. The darker boy is brandishing a knife in one hand, pointed at a much older man holding up his pants, the other hand is braced across the other boy.

"I paid for him!" The man spits.

Permalink Mark Unread

The boy's face twists with fury. He tugs money from the other boy's pocket and throws it at him.

"Fuck off!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev, we- needed-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren pulls his glasses off and tucks them away.

"Hey," he snaps, body angled towards the older man. "I think you should leave, mate."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran's grip on Nova tightens.

Permalink Mark Unread

The man snarls. "I'm not going anywhere until this little shit gets that knife out of my face."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Bad move on the man's part. Aaren had been moving before he finished speaking, and delivers a sharp punch to his jaw before grabbing the arm not holding his pants up, and twisting it up behind his back, forcing him towards the alley entrance.

He leans in close enough to hiss in the man's ear. "I think the police would be more interested in the man trying to fuck the obviously underage kid."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova clings to Zevran.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran curls his arm tighter around Nova in response, but does not take is eyes or his knife from the man.

Permalink Mark Unread

The man tries weakly to get out of Aaren's grip. "He- he said we was 18!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure he did. I doubt you believed him."

He throws the man forward.

"Get out of here before I have to actually hurt you."

He's bulked himself up some, and he looks ready for a fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

The man trips over himself as he's pushed, gibbering angry excuses. He stands, vitirol on his lips, eyes on the discarded notes on the ground, before he catches sight of Aaren. He takes one experimental step forward, but quickly stops, scowls, and then stomps off into the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren watches him go, and then shifts, making himself smaller as he turns back to the two boys. He pauses and then ducks down to pick the notes that are furthest from the two boys. He holds them out. "Seeing as he isn't bothering to collect them, you may as well have them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran says nothing, but backs Nova up towards the wall again, his knife now on Aaren.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren glances at the knife, and then sits down, ignoring the fact that the ground is damp. He places his hands on his knees.

"I'm not going to hurt you," he says, although he doesn't expect them to believe that. "I'm just...concerned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've heard that before." Zevran can very distinctly remember the last 'concerned well-wisher'.

He thinks his pant leg still has a blood stain.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I expect you have," Aaren says, sounding nothing so much as tired. (He's having flashes of 'Chelle's mother, all hard sharp edges, combative, scared and unwilling to trust.) He takes a breath, doesn't let it out in the sigh that wants to escape. "Do you have somewhere safe to go?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't. They were kicked out of the shelter not long ago, and Zevran had been trying to find enough money to get them a motel room somewhere, at least for a time.

"We're fine," he says, though his heart is full of fear for Nova's well-being.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shakes against him. "Zev-"

Permalink Mark Unread

...They don't then.

"...are you going to take this money?" he looks at it, doubts it's enough to get a room anywhere, let alone somewhere they'll be safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

He turns to look at Nova. He's still holding him, tightly as well, and that rankles with Zevran, knowing he's not allowed to touch, not allowed near. Can't let Nova for one second think he was anything like...like them.

The rain is freezing, and he doesn't know how long Nova has been out here. They're both soaked, and that means Nova will almost certainly get sick. Zevran doesn't have enough money for a doctor. He knows Nova's fire can't keep him warm all the time.

He loosens his grip on Nova, but stays close. Keeping hold of the knife, he takes the money from Aaren. It's not much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes a quiet sound as Zev loosens his grip, but doesn't actually complain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren shuffles himself further back, giving them more space.

"That's- probably not enough for a room," he points out carefully. "I can go with you somewhere and get you a room?" (He doesn't like this option, not really.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll figure something out. Something better. I'll keep you safe," Zevran murmurs to Nova. He hates himself for not doing that today. How could he let him go?

Permalink Mark Unread

To Aaren: "And what would we owe you for that?" He spits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-You're not going to believe me if I say nothing, are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone always demands something from us. From him." Zevran curses how broken his voice sounds on the last word.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren looks down, swallowing bile, breathes in and out carefully.

"I have a daughter," he says. "About your age," he nods to Zev. "And- I adopted her. After her mother- Her mother was attacked, raped. When she wasn't that much older than you. She didn't want 'Chelle. So I took her. Believe me when I say that the idea of doing that to anyone is repulsive. Never mind a child."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran had never heard anyone use the word 'rape'. No one would ever admit that what they did to Nova was rape. And here- this man knew what had been done to the boy Zevran loved and- and was condemning it?

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's shaking his head. (It wasn't, wasn'twasn'twasn't, he'd owed them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because just because Nadia didn't want her child, didn't mean she didn't want 'Chelle to be cared for. And- she trusted me enough, and I wasn't going to send a child into a system that while it tries, is overtaxed and flawed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nova never saw the system." Zevran's voice is bitter.

Permalink Mark Unread

-you were a soldier, Aaren reminds himself forcefully, don't throw up.

"-it's late," he says instead. "And you're both soaked through. I've got a spare room, with a lock on the door. And dry clothes, and soup. You both look like you could use a good meal, and it might help ward off any colds or flus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We-" Zevran starts, ready to turn this man aside, but-

He turns again to look at Nova. Nova, with deep shadows under his eyes, his whole body shaking. When was the last time he'd eaten? Zev remembered stealing those burgers, but that was...days ago. Nova wouldn't last much longer like this. And he might- he might go out again- if-

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't keep us there. We can leave when we want," Zevran says, brandishing the knife again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't try. You can walk away right now if you want, and any time after this. Just- at least let me get a warm meal into you? And some dry clothes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Forget about me. Nova needs rest and food. I'm coming with him so you don't go near him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev," Nova says, almost urgently. (Zev needs to look after himself, Nova doesn't know what he'll do if he loses him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren sighs, getting carefully to his feet. "I'm not going to only look after one of you. And I think that...Nova? will feel better if you look after yourself as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nova matters more."

Aaren stands, and Zevran watches him carefully. He's suddenly hyper-aware of how close he is to Nova, and the self-hatred returns for it's necessity.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't like that. Zev matters so much more than him. Zev's the one who got him out. Zev's the one who's been looking after him. He hadn't meant to be gone long enough for Zev to wake up and worry. He'd meant to be quick, and go back with money, so Zev could get something to eat-

He hunches his shoulders slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

...He can work on Zev's self worth later.

-No, he's just giving them a room for the night. They probably won't hang around after that.

"I'm not going to try and take the knife off you," he says. "But I would appreciate it if you don't pull it while 'Chelle's around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've learnt to draw it quickly." He closes it away, and stows it in his pocket.

He does not take his arm from Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. That's good. Because Nova needs Zev right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, I'm afraid it's a little bit of a walk, but it's not far."

And he leads the way out of the alley and towards his house, debating texting 'Chelle again - but if she's sleeping, he really doesn't want to disturb her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Before they follow Aaren, Zevran takes a chance and turns his back on him to look at Nova. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I should've been there for you. We won't stay long, I just-" Nova's hand is so tight on him, enough that even though Zevran knows letting go is the right thing, he cannot bring himself to. "I'll be with you the whole time. He won't get near you. You'll eat and sleep and then we'll find another way."

He wants to press his lips to Nova's head, wants to show him all the affection he never got. But he would rather die than take advantage of Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

"S'fine, Zev, s'fine. You do. You keep me safe. Just- just wanted to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that way, Nova. Never that way." His voice is fierce, but he is glad for the rain so he can hide his tears.

He turns back to Aaren, leading Nova to follow him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays clinging to Zev as he lets him lead him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren had set a leisurely pace, and has paused briefly, not that far ahead.

As promised, it doesn't take that long for them to reach the neatly tended semi-detached house.

Aaren unlocks the door and steps inside, leaving the door open for them to follow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran slips his hand into the pocket where his knife is, but follows Aaren inside. His other hand finds Nova's and laces their fingers together tightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren's pulling his jacket off, and taking off his shoes to put them on the rack beside the door. (It's perhaps noticeable that there's three different sets of shoes on the rack, one obviously a girl's, the other two male.)

"Close the door please?" he requests.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran reaches behind Nova to do so.

He does not move from further into the house, or step away from Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should get you both into something dry. And- showers if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad? I thought I-"

A girl with bright green hair stops at the top of the stairs.

"Everything okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is the daughter you mentioned?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. 'Chelle, these are Zev and Nova, they're going to be staying with us tonight, that okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," she agrees, seeming genuine. "Some of Lan's clothes are in the tumble dryer, should be warm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-is Lan still here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, his parents called him to go home. He figured he should actually listen. You're getting out of your wet clothes as well, I hope?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems nice. And genuine, which is not something Zev and Nova have had for a while. And this seems like a far too elaborate set up for- for that. But his second fear is that someone will find a way to take Nova away from him, and there isn't much Zev wouldn't do to prevent that.

"Nova needs dry clothes. And some rest. He hasn't slept in a few days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we can sort both of those things. Dad, dry clothes. I've got these two for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, ma'am," Aaren says, snapping off a salute as he climbs the stairs. He presses a kiss to her hair as he passes.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle smiles at him, leans briefly into him, and then continues her way down the stairs. "Bathroom right there," she says, pointing to the door at the end of the hall. "There's clean towels on the towel rail. I'll grab you both clothes. And no arguments from you," she says directly to Zev. "I'm not leaving you in wet clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran frowns at the easy affection, because his heart aches painfully. He wants that. He's never had that. More than anything, he wants that for Nova.

He turns around to Nova. "I'll stand outside the door. You should get warm." He tightens his hold on Nova's hand, then hates himself for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova clings to him tighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The bathroom has a lock," 'Chelle says carefully. "Gimme a minute to grab you some clothes, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran leans into Nova, closing his eyes as he presses his head to his. "What's wrong? What do you need?"

How do I fix this?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't- don't leave me. I- please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, okay. I'm with you. I promise. Always."

He looks up at 'Chelle. He points. "That door?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She's been quick, and is just coming back into the hall with a pile of clothes. "Yeah. Here. They might be a bit big, Lan's a complete beanpole, but they'll be closer than mine or Dad's."

Permalink Mark Unread

He would say thank you, if the world had been kinder to him and Nova. He gives 'Chelle a nod as he takes them, then gently coaxes Nova towards the bathroom.

Once inside, he deposits the clothes on the sink, and gazes around in wonder. Not even the cult had bathrooms this clean.

"You first. I'll-I'll turn away while you change," he says to Nova, closing the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take showers if you want," 'Chelle calls through the door, and then leaves them be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hesitantly reaches out to turn the shower on, fiddling with the controls.

(He isn't allowed warm water, he knows that. Knowsknowsknows.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran watches the door, one hand in his pocket, fingering the knife, when he remembers something. Something Nova told him a long time ago.

I don't get warm water. I don't deserve it.

"Nova-" he says, sharply, turning and shoving his hand under the stream. It's freezing. "No. No, you'll get sick." He turns the hot water on, not having the same guilty conscience about it as Nova, and waits until the water is pleasantly warm. "There."

Permalink Mark Unread

"B-but- I- I don't wanna get in trouble. I- please don't make me get in trouble-"

Permalink Mark Unread

The blood in Zevran's veins freezes. He can remember that night, that night, so clearly in his mind and it both makes him want to kill and cry. He knows what Nova fears so dreadfully. It makes him sick that he let it happen for so long.

"There is nothing, nothing, they can do that I won't protect you from." Lies. "I would happily set myself on fire to keep you warm. But we have a shower for that instead. Please, Nova. I will keep you safe. They won't- you won't be in trouble. I will make sure of it."

He keeps himself distant. Ensures he doesn't follow his foolish heart and hold Nova, or press a careful kiss to his forehead, or to his fingers. Nova will forever have his heart but Zevran would die before he thought that meant he had his body.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nova's still reluctant, but- But-

But Zev has protected him, whenever he could, and- And he hasn't lied to him. He wouldn't.

He's shaking but-

But he nods cautiously, and starts to undress.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is quick to turn away, to offer Nova privacy.

Something he knows Nova never got a lot of.

Permalink Mark Unread

...the warm water doesn't hurt against his skin. It feels...almost pleasant.

Still, he cleans himself quickly, habit and the knowledge that Zev needs to as well, and he doesn't know how long they'll have-

He wraps himself in a sinfully soft towel when he gets out.

"I- your turn," he says quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran doesn't turn, wanting to give Nova time to change. "I'm okay. Get changed, then we'll see where we're sleeping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev, please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" God, he sounds broken. "I can't...I can't let my guard down. I have to keep you safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please, Zev. I- It's five minutes. 'Ll be fine. Door's locked, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It was. And he wouldn't be long. Being warm would be good. But-

Who was he trying to kid? He couldn't deny Nova anything.

He closed his eyes, letting Nova have the privacy. He pulled out his knife and gave it to him. "If you need it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes it cautiously, carefully, and nods, realises Zev can't see him, and gives vocal confirmation.

He quickly pulls on the still-warm clothes that they'd been given - the idea of putting his wet clothes on being horrid enough to make him do it without a thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran undresses and showers as quickly as he can, though the warm water was very welcome after the freezing rain and the on-off temperature of the shelter's showers.

He steps out, towelling quickly and then dressing in the dry clothes. The fit would be better, if he had kept the broadness the cult had trained into him, but the few months living on the streets had made him thinner than he realised.

He takes the knife back from Nova once he's done. "Okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. Been a while since I was this warm," he says, smiling at Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets him a small smile in return. "I- don't remember being this warm."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran gets a cold stab of guilt to his stomach. His fault. "I'll fix that. Next place we find will have hot water constantly." He tries another smile but he can feel how watery it is.

He unlocks the door. He pauses. He knows Nova was promised food, but for a moment he was almost certain running was a good option. It's hard to squash the urge to gather Nova in his arms and barrel back out into the rain. But-

But if these people can help care for Nova, even for a little while, isn't it worth it?

"Let's see what kind of food they'll give us."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods, a little cautiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

If they look to their right as they leave the bathroom they'll see the kitchen, and Aaren putting two bowls of soup down at the opposite end of the table from where 'Chelle's sat, a mug at her elbow, and a half eaten sandwich on a plate next to her, holding a hand of cards.

Aaren smiles warmly. "Lentil soup, as promised. Good warming food." (And not too harsh on stomachs not used to regular food, he doesn't say.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods. He turns to Nova. "That okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

-Nova isn't sure how to answer that, so he just nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, gimme those wet clothes, I'll get them cleaned up and dried for the two of you, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev hands them over. He already transferred their money (happily stolen from the would-be rapist) and his knife to his new pockets, and even if they kept the clothes it wouldn't matter. Zevran's was the uniform he was made to wear and if he was honest, he was grateful to see it go.

He coaxed Nova to a seat. "You need to eat. You've been trembling all day," he says quietly, hoping that only Nova can hear.

Permalink Mark Unread

If either Aaren or 'Chelle overhear, they don't show it as 'Chelle heads through a door with the bundle of clothes.

"Did you know that Lan's parents were having a gallery opening tomorrow? Showing some of their private collection for the first time?" Aaren calls after her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova picks up a spoon to start to eat, and then looks at Zev, and looks pointedly at the other bowl. He won't start eating until Zev does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I suppose that would explain why they wanted him home," 'Chelle agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran was busy staring at the two strangers, eyes flicking between them both as he fingered his knife.

Then he felt a prickle on the back of his neck, like someone was watching him. He turned, and saw Nova's pointed look at the bowl in front of Zev. Zev couldn't help a soft smile. "You start. I'll keep watch," he whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

...He's reluctant, but he does. He'll make sure Zev eats.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I assume you want me to call you in sick tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I'd appreciate that, Dad, really. He's gonna want back-up, and- can I take the car? Give him an out if he needs it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, Sparky."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran is jealous. It eats at his heart like poison. He'd heard of, and seen, these relationships, but it was always through a window, always detached. Never including him. There was only one person who cared about him, and it was someone he failed on a daily basis.

He spared Nova a look to make sure he was eating. "And the bread too," he reminded.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries, he does- but- he's not used to this amount. He bites his lip, looks sideways at Zev. "M'sorry. Full."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran looks at Nova's bowl. To him, a soldier used to getting as much as he could stomach, it looks like Nova had barely touched it. Zev didn't understand, had he not been feeding Nova enough?

Of course he hadn't, Nova hadn't eaten in three days. Because he hadn't tried enough. Because he couldn't take care of the only important person to him. "Are- are you sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." It is not okay. "Are you tired?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Zev. Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine, mi vida."

He looks over to Aaren. "Where are we sleeping?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Upstairs, I'll show you," he starts to get to his feet. "You can take the soup upstairs if you want. Eat it up there. I'd feel much better if you had at least one good meal before you decide to leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran stands. "I'll be fine. It's more important that Nova-"

All of a sudden things turn woozy. Adrenaline has fuelled him for hours, and once that left there was nothing in him. There were spots in his vision, his hands felt numb and then-

"Nova?" His voice was so weak.

And then he felt himself fall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren sees Zev start to fall before he does, and starts to lunge around the table to catch him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's abruptly between Zev and Aaren, shaking and terrified, flames leaping up off his hands. "I- I'm sorry, he's fine, please don't!"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle starts to her feet, sparks of electricity running over her skin in an uncontrollable response to Nova's fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran's hand finds Nova's ankle. He can't even hear his usual mantra of 'don't touch don't touch don't touch.'

"I'm...I'm okay. I'm sorry- I'm so sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I'll be good," Nova promises, barely registering Zev's words or presence. "I- I'll be good, and pleasing, and- and I can make you feel- just don't hurt him. Please. He'll be okay. Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, hey, no. No. I don't want- no. Neither of you are in any trouble. I promise. It's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nova-" Zevran pleads, trying to make himself louder. He- Zevran couldn't let him do that again. Couldn't let him relieve his worst nightmare just to keep him safe. Zevran would rather die.

Zevran forced himself up, his hands not quite obeying him, but he managed to half put himself between him and Nova, even if his vision was blurry. "Don't...don't..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to do anything. To either of you. Sparky? Can you-?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle breathes carefully, manages to stop the sparks on her skin. "Nova, can I come closer? Can I help Zev up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, please he-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna help you and him to the bathroom. And then you're going to lock the door. Okay? Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran can barely get words out, but he needs them to know. "Take...take me instead-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren's backed away, and turns to go into the utility room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No-one is taking anyone," 'Chelle promises, open and genuine. "But won't you feel better with a door between us and you? Then we can't hurt Zev? But I think Zev needs some help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's shaking, but he steps a little away from Zev, watches 'Chelle closely.

Permalink Mark Unread

She moves forward slowly, and kneels down next to Zev slowly, one hand hovering. "Can I touch you?" she requests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, yes- just leave him alone-"

Zevran only half knows what he's saying right now, the only thing he's sure of is his need to keep Nova safe, to throw himself on any sword to protect him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honey, I'm ace," she tells him, touching him oh so gently. "I'm gonna help you up now. Nova, grab that bowl of soup and the spoon huh?"

She'll worry about bathrooms not being the most sanitary place to eat when these two aren't panicking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova obeys, not looking away from 'Chelle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please don't hurt him. I tried to stop them, I-"

'Chelle puts one hand on him, gentle and careful and Zevran nearly breaks. He can't remember a gentle touch before Nova's. He cannot remember easy affection. He lets her help him up, dazed eyes looking for Nova all the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not hurting anyone," she promises, giving him a gentle squeeze, a hug, she can feel his reaction to the touch, can't imagine not knowing what a gentle touch felt like, what comfort felt like. "I know you tried. I can see it, honey. And he wants you to not be hurt as well. And so do me and Dad."

She guides him towards the bathroom, lets Nova back in ahead of her, before helping Zev in and helping him to sit.

"Can you wait two seconds before locking the door?" she asks Nova. "The cupboard just out here," she points, moving slowly back towards the door. 'It has blankets and pillows, and I want to get some for you, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- uh- yes, ma'am?" he agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just 'Chelle," she assures him, quickly pulling the cupboard door open and grabbing an armful of blankets and pillows. She tucks them to the side of the door. "There. You go ahead and lock the door now, okay? It's okay."

And she goes back into the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

-It takes Nova a moment to make himself close the door, but he needs to keep Zev safe.

He leans against the door, until he can make himself push the lock home.

Then he turns back to Zev.

"Z-Zev?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He lets himself be led to the bathroom, eyes on Nova the whole time, even though what he desperately wants is to curl into the gentle arms holding him up. 'Chelle gently sits him down, and he tries to keep himself up on one arm, attempting to look like he wasn't as dizzy as he felt. He thought he was doing the right thing, giving extra food to Nova. He was supposed to be stronger than this. If they had- if Aaren or 'Chelle-

He looks up at his name, tears already forming in his eyes. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, Nova, I should've- You should never have to-"

Defend me.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- no. No. You- you- we look after each other?" Nova picks up one of the blankets and goes as though to tuck it around Zev and- stops, just holding it out. "I- you couldn't. So I did. Like you do for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev holds out his arms for the blanket, wishing that he could reach out a little more and just pull Nova to him. "I don't deserve you," he says quietly in Spanish.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova doesn't know what Zev's saying, but he hands him the blanket, and then goes to fetch the bowl of soup he left on the sink, and holds that out as well. "Eat," he says, with surprising force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran takes it, and half smiles, like only the left corner of his mouth can lift. "I think that's my line."

He does eat, however.

That gets a small smile as Nova curls up next to him - forgoing a blanket in the immediate. He also hums approvingly when Zev eats.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hadn't even realised how hungry he was, but purposefully makes himself eat slowly. He's already fainted, he doesn't want to add vomiting to the list. He manages to finish the whole bowl, and carefully deposits it to one side.

"That's better than we've had for a while, no?" Zevran asks, his head just tilting back onto the wall. The dizziness hasn't really abated, but he feels better just knowing he's had food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he agrees. "I- wish I could've eaten more." And he does, to try and erase the worry he sees in Zev's eyes, and because it was so good.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should always eat as much as you can stomach. Especially if you like it..." If Zevran intended to say anything else, it's lost as his eyes flutter shut and his breathing evens out.

After a moment, his head slips down the wall to land on Nova's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova goes still when Zev's head falls onto his shoulder, barely daring to breath because he doesn't know what to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

The he shuffles carefully closer to Zev, doing his best not to disturb him, until he's close enough that they could legitimately be considered to be cuddling.

He's determined to keep watch while Zev sleeps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran lets out a tiny, pleased moan, and tucks his head further into Nova's warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

His smile widens slightly.

-despite his best intentions, he's too tired to stay awake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran's back hurts. His arm is numb. But he's warmer than he remembers being since- before. He slowly starts coming back to himself, remembering what happened, but when he opens his eyes and tries to lift his head, he finds there's a weight on it. He shifts slightly, confused, and sees Nova, still sleeping, cradled around Zevran just close enough that they could be cuddling.

Zevran's heart just about stops. He doesn't want to move, doesn't want to disturb this. He's wanted it for so long, and seeing Aaren and 'Chelle's easy affection made that longing burn. Being this close to Nova is like sitting in the sun.

He savours this closeness one last time, before gently lifting his head, holding Nova's in his not-numb-hand. He carefully lets Nova's head droop onto his own shoulder, and moves away slightly, so Nova isn't frightened. He then works on getting feeling back into his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova, amazingly, doesn't jerk immediately awake, but he wakes fairly soon afterwards. "I- I'm sorry. I- meant to stay awake. And keep watch."

(There's no indication that anyone has tried to get into the bathroom at all.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay. It's my fault. I didn't even give you the knife."

Zevran stands, with some effort, his knees are sore, and goes over to the door. The lock is still in place, and nothing indicates they tried to get it. If Zevran is truly honest with himself, he didn't think that they would. He just doesn't know why anyone would care about them. He knows why he cares about Nova, and that's about the only sure thing he knows.

"What...what are we going to do next?" He says, half to himself. He doesn't really expect an answer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't get one beyond a shrug.

The smell that is slowly permeating the bathroom from the kitchen might suggest 'eat breakfast' is a viable option if he cares to investigate.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does smell good. And Zevran is still hungry. One bowl of soup will not make up for a week's starvation.

He turns back to look at Nova. "Do you want to stay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know. But maybe Zev'll get more food, and look healthier again and-

"I, yes? If you think- it's safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran looks back around to the door. Everything about this seems safe. Warm clothes, lock on the door, plentiful food.

But he remembers growing up like that. He was given much. While Nova-

"I don't know if it is. I- I admit, I'm lost."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova gets to his feet slowly. "I- we can leave later? Can't we? He- he said we could?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That does put Zevran on more solid ground. "True. And we may as well have a few warm meals while we can get them."

He gives Nova a reassuring smile that he himself doesn't quite feel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova relaxes some and smiles back - Zev will keep him safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right," Zevran says. The demon voice in his head chants takehishand! but Zev doesn't, knowing that it isn't right. "Stay close."

He unlocks the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a backpack propped up against the cupboard door. It appears to be stuffed with blankets, there's two of the throwaway plastic rain ponchos, and also an entire box of energy bars.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren can be heard humming in the kitchen, along with the sounds of cooking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev kneels down to inspect the backpack. It's enough supplies to last them a while, if they're careful.

He shoulders the pack, taking it with them into the kitchen, not trusting it to not be gone if they leave it.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle gives them a warm smile. "Good to see you on your feet, Zev," she says. "G'morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren looks back from where he's stood at the stove and smiles at them. "Morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays half hidden behind Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods back at the greetings.

He motions to the backpack. “For us?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. No cost. Just. In case you were going to skip out before breakfast. Or any time after this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are staying for breakfast right? What would you like to drink? Take a seat."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks behind him to Nova, eyebrows raised in question. Yes?

Permalink Mark Unread

He half-shrugs, half-nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got tea, coffee, hot chocolate, we're out of milk, but water, orange juice, apple juice, I think we have squash somewhere..."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Coffee, thank you. And tea for Nova,” he says it a little harsher than he meant, though he doesn’t want to take it back. He holds the right to still be suspicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle just smiles. "Really do sit down, you look better, but the kitchen looks unneat." It's soft, teasing, warm, no bite to her words as she makes them drinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can’t deny how much he would like to. He still feels shaky, even after a full night’s sleep. He directs Nova to a chair first, then pulls the one next to him closer, not enough to touch but enough that he can get in front of him easily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren puts plates down in front of them, scrambled eggs and toast, and goes back to the pan.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle comes back with two steaming mugs, putting those next to Zev, and, after a moment, she risks giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze before retreating to her own seat and mug.

Permalink Mark Unread

The food smelled incredible, and they weren’t given measly portions. Zevran looked at Nova and gave him a small, encouraging smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then ‘Chelle squeezed his shoulder and he had to stop himself reaching out and keeping her hand there. The gentleness was nearly overwhelming.

He shut his eyes for one steadying second to take in a shaky breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She's gonna keep doing that then. Because it hurts her how much he needs that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren brings two more plates over, sits down next to 'Chelle and strike up a domestic conversation about school and how Aaren would appreciate 'Chelle not turning up in the society pages of the local newspaper again as the school secretaries actually read those.

They don't mention the night before, and while they don't ignore their guests exactly, they aren't paying them much mind either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran relaxes a bit once their eyes are off him and Nova. Normally, and what he did last night, he would stay on guard every second until he and Nova moved. But after last night-

Its too soon to say he trusts them. But he does appreciate what they’ve done for Nova. And for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev starts eating, catching Nova’s eye and nodding at his own food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Nova's sure he's eating, he starts on his own meal.

He can't finish it again, but this time he pushes the remnants towards Zev with a very pointed look.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran smiles at Nova, and shows him is own half-finished plate.

“I can’t finish either,” he whispers conspiratorially.

Permalink Mark Unread

The gets a small smile in return, although Nova still looks worried.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're done, I'll take your plates?" She lowers her tone to a conspiratory whisper of her own. "I don't think Dad ever learned that portion control was a thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," Aaren complains. "I learned it was a thing. I just ignore it. Big difference."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We- I haven’t eaten large meals in some time.”

Nova, he doesn’t say, never got them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try to match the portions better than. And there's food in all the cupboards, please help yourself."

Beat. "And there's literally two cases of energy bars on a shelf in the utility room, help yourself to those as well." (Doesn't say 'please don't hoard anything perishable'.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- can help?" Nova offers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got it covered, sweetie," 'Chelle promises, whisking their plates away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev stays quiet, watching them carefully, leaning his body almost sub-conciously towards Nova, like he was drawn into his orbit.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle hums quietly while she deals with the dishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now, neither of you are in any trouble, but I do need to talk to you both about last night, if you don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Why would we be in trouble at all?” Zevran says coolly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's shaking slightly. "I- I'm sorry, sir, I didn't mean to- I just- lost control. It- It won't happen again!"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Nova, you didn’t do anything, you have nothing to be sorry for,” Zev says firmly, but in a gentle tone. His eyes are on Aaren, accusing him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely not!" Aaren agrees. "And I'm glad you tried to protect your friend, even though it must have been scary to do so."

Pause. "Besides, you didn't set anything on fire, or fuse the whole house like Sparky over there," his tone is nothing so much as fond and amused. "So, no harm, no foul."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova half reaches for Zev, because- he needs-

He can't believe that, no-one had ever-

"They- they said- that I-"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Fire? What is he-“ The look on Nova’s face is enough to explain things for Zev. When he fell, Nova must’ve...

“Nova,” he says softly. He takes Nova’s hand because how can he deny him when he reaches for him?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't done that in years!" 'Chelle complains good-naturedly, grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'sorry," he repeats miserably. "M'bad. I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are not," Aaren states firmly. "You're no more bad than 'Chelle is for accidentally fusing the whole house when she fused the house. You were scared, and protecting Zev. Your flames would make that easier. You were merely using what you had."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tightens his hold on Nova’s hand, only just quelling the urge to press his lips to it. “You’re not. You’re not bad. There’s not a bad bone in you, you’re so good. You’re so good, mi vida.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"The main reason I bring it up, is because I wanted to point out that our cellar is...bascially fireproof if you need to let off steam. And ask whether you received any elemental training?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shakes his head slowly.

Permalink Mark Unread

“They...they didn’t want him as a solider.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Didn't want me to use it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren pauses, looks between the two boys. "Zev, you don't have to answer this, but do you have any magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran shakes his head, eyes still on Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And did-?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad, quit with the questions, huh? You guys wanna go see if there's any crappy cartoons on TV?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gives ‘Chelle a puzzled look, though he does feel grateful for the change of subject. Nova’s hand is shaking in his.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you've never watched crappy cartoons on TV, have you? C'mon. Both of you, living room. We'll see what we can find."

She heads out of the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev runs his thumb over Nova’s hand. “What do you want to do? We can go...” he whispers, leaning close.

Permalink Mark Unread

...He shrugs again, no idea how to respond to that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to make you stay," Aaren says. "But I've asked a healer friend of mine to come over. Take a look at you, maybe get you in better shape before you head back out. Easier to protect yourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova’s shutting down, Zev has seen this before. He thinks that the best thing to do is pull away, as much as it hurts him to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes a quiet distressed noise as Zev starts to pull away, and then flinches slightly. (He shouldn't be asking Zev for this, Zev never seemed to want to touch him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can still leave at any time," Aaren assures, getting to his feet. "Just. I'd feel better knowing you're both in good health."

And he leaves the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s heard Nova make that sound. He made it last night when Zev moved away from him. Is he-

Is he trying to ask for comfort?

Heart in his throat, he tucks his hand in Nova’s tighter, and slides closer to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova relaxes a tiny bit. Zev isn't going to leave him, Zev's staying, that's good. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I don’t want to let go. I thought...I thought it’d be better if I did.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He shifts closer again. "I- it's- nice. Doesn't- hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Doesn’t hurt?” Zev’s leg is pressed against Nova’s. It’s the closest they’ve sat in...months. The effect is dizzying. It’s addictive.

For a moment he is desperate for more.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I- Everything. Before. And you don't. And I- I- like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

“You-” Zev’s breath leaves in one, huge rush. Months of keeping his distance, all so he doesn’t hurt Nova, traumatise him and...

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s smile is bigger than he can remember it being in a long time. He knows he looks dopey. He...he’s making things better. Maybe not fixing anything, and he still doesn’t feel like he deserves it, but...

He’ll take what he can get.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova smiles back. He hopes this means Zev will touch him now. He likes it.

"...are we staying?" he asks after a moment, and he needs Zev to make this decision. He's barely had to make decisions before this.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I am curious about this healer. Maybe they can fix my shoulder,” Zevran says, rubbing the old wound absent-mindedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova looks away, guilty, because if they hadn't run, if Zev hadn't decided he was worth...something, Zev wouldn't have been hurt. He doesn't move away.

"O-okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev sees his guilty look, and finds himself matching it. He doesn’t want Nova to blame himself. “I’d rather take one bullet to the shoulder than leave you. Mierda, I’d take a bullet to every inch of skin I have to keep you out of that place.”

He touches the tattoo on his own face, looking at the matching one on Nova’s. He reaches out and gently touches it. He hates it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes his hand from Nova’s face, but keeps the others entwined. “Let’s go find out about these “crappy cartoons”, yes?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay," he agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll find 'Chelle in the living room, curled up in a chair, watching Scooby Doo.

Permalink Mark Unread

“That dog is unreasonably large.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"He also speaks. And he is a great dane. They're massive."

Permalink Mark Unread

“...speaking dog. I suddenly do not feel bad for missing out on television.”

It feels kind of like holding out an olive branch to the girl who has taken care of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mystery-solving talking dog. Sit down and be delighted," she says. And it's an order, in a way, as she points imperiously at the sofa, but her smile takes away any seriousness, and her eyes are twinkling and warm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev regards her for a moment, and then swings the backpack off, placing it in arm’s reach, before leading Nova to the sofa and sitting down. He keeps their hands together, but tries to keep a slight bit of distance between their bodies.

For propriety’s sake, he tells himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scooby Doo plays, and the monster is unmasked, and 'Chelle occasionally narrates something, explains something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shuffles slightly closer to Zev, wanting to be pressed against his side again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev keeps up a running dry commentary, clearly unimpressed by daytime cartoons. It’s almost...easy. Like getting a glimpse into a life that could be his own.

He notices Nova’s timid shuffle, and can’t help a smile. He should’ve realised this months ago. He moves closer to Nova, almost non-chalantly, until they are pressed together shoulder to foot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova, very hesitantly, rests his head on Zev's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle loves having his commentary to riff off! Arguing her point.

She has to stop speaking for a moment when she sees Zev and Nova shifting out of the corner of her eyes, because if she keeps speaking, the adorableness is going to make her squeak.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev leans his head on top of Nova’s in return. “Te amo, mi vida.”

It takes one more cartoon for Zevran to fall asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

...that's far too cute. 'Chelle smiles, turns the TV down slightly, and stays quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova smiles slightly as he feels Zev drop off. He needs the sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe an hour later, the doorbell rings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev stirs slightly. In his sleep he has tucked his feet onto the couch, and curled almost entirely into Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's the sound of the door opening, and then a dog trots into the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Esca," a deep voice calls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s eyes open, and he sees a dog. A real one. “Is he here to solve mysteries?” He mutters, mostly into Nova’s hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently, he's here to deposit his massive head between them and woof softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He wants strokes," 'Chelle says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren leads two new people into the room at this point.

Permalink Mark Unread

A tall, built man who is looking at the dog in betrayal.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a slender woman who moves like she just stepped off a catwalk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev pokes the dog. “That is another unreasonably large dog.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He then notices the two strangers and sits bolt upright, already pulling Nova closer, one hand going to the pocket his knife is in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We think Drex bribed one of the druids," the woman says cheerfully. "But this one," she taps the large man's arm, "will admit to nothing. Aaren, cher, I think me and you should go and make tea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-if you think that's best."

He lets the woman tow him out of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev watches the man warily.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle's moved over and is tugging him down to her level so she can kiss his cheek. "Hey, Uncle Drex."

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes easily. "Hey, pup."

Then he folds himself down to be sat cross-legged.

"Aaren said he mentioned I was coming."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova is hesitantly petting the dog now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev relaxes somewhat seeing ‘Chelle’s reaction, and Nova seems okay with the dog.

“He didn’t mention anyone by your description,” he says, still wary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uncle Drex is the best known healer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex points at 'Chelle in a gesture clearly meant to indicate: 'what she said'.

Permalink Mark Unread

“He did mention that.”

Zev looks Drex up and down. “You don’t look much like a healer.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heard that before. Call it a natural talent."

He holds his hand up, and green light suffuses his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

He’d only ever seen Nova’s flames, so seeing another kind of magic is rather...well...spell binding.

“That...looks convincing. Not that I’m any kind of expert.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles, surprisingly warm on his stern face.

"Aaren is concerned. Said you were out in the rain. Mighta been in a fight. Wanted me to check you over. That okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Nova first,” he says, gesturing with their joined hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...this is easier if I'm touching you. Even just the smallest contact, touching finger tips, massively helps. Can do it without if that's a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nova doesn't know how to answer that, just presses a little closer to Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans his head back onto Nova’s. “I’m right here.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova very cautiously reaches out one hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex shuffles around close enough to touch Nova's fingertips when he reaches out, closes his eyes and-

Green light suffuses him, flows down his arm and through his fingers, into Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Panic does flare in Zev to see anything he doesn’t understand affecting Nova, but he...trusts ‘Chelle. And she clearly trusts Drex.

He keeps a tight hold on Nova’s hand, stroking his thumb back and forth, trying to keep his touch soothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's only five minutes before he pulls back. "There. Feel better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods hesitantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex looks over to Zev and tilts his head, holding his hand out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev squeezes Nova’s hand once Drex is done.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes his other hand out of his pocket, and reaches out to Drex, putting his hand calmly into his.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex doesn't close his hand, closes his eyes again, and the green light flows down his arm. It feels warm as it flows through Zev, comforting as it makes it's way through him.

When it reaches the wound in his shoulder, it seems to- coil around it, goes warmer for a moment and then- moves on. And Zev's shoulder feels better than it perhaps ever has.

Permalink Mark Unread

If he had a free hand, he would touch his shoulder in wonder. As it is, they’d need a crowbar to force him to let go of Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex pulls back, breathes out, opens his eyes. "Better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev took his free hand back and quickly dived below the collar of his shirt and hoodie to feel out the place the bullet had entered.

There was nothing.

“It’s....it’s like it didn’t happen,” he said, tone full of wonder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See what I mean? He's the best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'n get rid of those tats too," Drex offers. "Not right now. But if you want, c'n come back and do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

His hand goes straight to the tattoo. Zev can’t remember what he looked like without it.

What Nova looked like.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think 'bout it. Can't do it right now anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

He wants it off Nova’s face. Wants any proof that those monsters ever thought they owned him. Nova wasn’t anyone’s property, wasn’t anyone’s toy. He was free now. Zevran would die to ensure that.

“Thanks.” He nods at Drex.

Permalink Mark Unread

Angelique comes back in at that point, carrying a tray with a tea set on it. "All done?" she asks brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn’t smile at the woman returning, but he also doesn’t go for his knife.

He shifts his shoulder a bit to make Nova more comfortable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex nods and shuffles himself around so that he's leaning against one of the chairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca doesn't budge, just nuzzles into Nova's hand, and pokes at Zev with his nose.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren comes back in, balancing a tray of scones in one hand and pulling a chair with the other. "'Chelle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle immediately moves over to relieve him of the tray.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That wasn't what I wanted you to take," Aaren chuckles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev raises an eyebrow at the dog, but does gently pat it a few times. “You are a large dog,” he informs it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Proud woof!

Permalink Mark Unread

Angelique is pouring tea from the pot. "So, reason number two I am not just dragging this lummox away," she pauses to press a kiss to Drex's head, "is that Aaren said that Nova is a fire elemental who's received no training?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrinks a little against Zev's side - more reflex when someone brought up his curse than anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nuzzles Nova, then let’s go of his hand, quickly replacing it with the other, and then wraps an arm firmly around him.

“They didn’t want him trained,” Zev says. “He wasn’t allowed weapons.”

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a frozen moment where the woman looks furious and then she clears her face. "I assume the people who raised you were... Not of a magical persuasion? Only a fool would try to get an elemental to not use their abilities."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren puts plates with buttered scones spread with jam on the side of the coffee table closest to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

“They were-” Zev begins, furious, but stops himself. He doesn’t want Nova to flinch away from him. He takes a deep breath, taking comfort himself from Nova.

“There were no other magic users that I knew of.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"...that's concerning," Aaren comments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed," Ange agrees. "And requires looking into, but later. For now, it is more important that we provide you with training, Nova. I am a fire elemental myself, and while Aaren and 'Chelle have techniques that will help, it is...wiser to learn from someone of the same element if that is amenable?"

Her gaze switches between Zev and Nova as she speaks, clearly intending for this to be a decision both of them make.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova looks at Zev as well, uncertain.

Permalink Mark Unread

He lifts his head from Nova’s to look at him better. “Learning to use it would make it less frightening for you,” Zev says gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods hesitantly. "I-if you think that's best, ma'am?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles warmly. "I definitely don't think it would harm anyone. Zev, you are more than welcome to sit in on any sessions as well. I certainly think that is wiser than not."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. Smart woman.

“What was your name?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Angelique Ouroboros," she introduces herself. "Heavens where did my manners go. Call me Ange, or even Aunt Ange if you like. Whatever you're most comfortable with."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Pleasure.”

He’s surprised to find he almost means it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now. I would prefer to start sooner, rather than later-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ange," Aaren chides.

Permalink Mark Unread

"But do understand that you may wish a little time before we do start. I am bad for being overeager..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs a little. "Don't mind? I-whatever you think best?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Angelique looks to Zev and tilts her head very slightly, asking for his assessment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is startled by this. Now? But...Nova's only had one night of sleep and it was spent mostly propping Zev up. Surely a bit more time to rest would be better?

But then again, he's not the expert here. Not even close. He squeezes Nova gently. "Ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly, what I'm going to ask of you here isn't much. It's simply getting used to doing something small with your fire. Igniting your hand, or lighting a candle."

Permalink Mark Unread

He wants to help. He doesn’t know how.

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I was younger, I found that contact with something that...grounded me, helped a lot with my focus."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sh'used me about half the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods cautiously again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now. I should be able to contain anything that gets out of hand, so don't worry about that. Just breathe, and light up just one hand for me, please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev kept his hands tight on Nova’s hand and on his shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova breathes carefully, and then holds out his hand and-

He doesn't make the flames happen, it's more like he lets them happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very-" Angelique starts, but is cut off-

Permalink Mark Unread

-by flames lighting up on both her hands. "What-?" she breathes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova flinches at that response, and immediately tamps down on the flames, a reflexive apology falling off his lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

“What’s wrong?” Zev demands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca has pressed closer to Nova, trying to offer comfort.

"Nothing, not really," Angelique says. "There's nothing to apologise for, Nova, I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrinks into Zev's side anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just wasn't expecting my fire to respond to yours."

She manages to dismiss her flames. "See? Everything's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s half risen out of his seat, eyes narrowed. He hasn’t let go of Nova, but he’s ready to leap in between him and the rest of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't go half an hour without being dramatic, can you, Ange?" Aaren complains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you know me," Angelique says cheerfully. "Now. I think perhaps we should leave it at that for today, and eat these no doubt delicious scones Aaren has prepared for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yes, I think we’re done.”

He goes to stand and pull Nova with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova is pliant, immediately moving with Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca gives a distressed whine, but shuffles back as they move.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You leaving then?" Aaren sounds concerned.

Permalink Mark Unread

“The room? Certainly.”

He guides Nova out, conspicuously leaving the bag.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca follows close on their heels.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle follows at a more reasonable distance. "Hey. Want somewhere a bit more comfy than the bathroom?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“I want to remove my- I want to take Nova out of a situation almost designed to make him upset!” He hisses. He’s not mad at ‘Chelle. He’s confused and scared for Nova, who hasn’t spoken a word since it happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promise it wasn't designed to upset you, Nova," she speaks directly to the silent boy, although her words are meant for Zev as much as Nova. "I'm just thinking that if you two need time, you could use my room? There's a lock on the door, and the bed's more comfortable than the bathroom floor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shifts a little closer to Zev. "S'fine," he mumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

“No, mi vida, it’s not fine. They should’ve warned you something like that could happen.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"From Aunt Ange's face, I don't think she knew it could? I'm not trying to make excuses, because you're right, we should have but. I've never heard of anything like this. And if Aunt Ange hasn't encountered it before..."

She sighs, shakes her head. "All I can do is apologise, and promise we'll try to do better."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is quiet for a long moment.

When he does speak, he sounds tired. “He needs rest. We both do. If you wouldn’t mind giving us your room, we would appreciate it.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all," she assures. "Follow me," she leads them up the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gathers Nova close and follows her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

They still have a canine shadow padding after them.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle leads them into her room, which is...vibrant. All bright colours, and weird designs. One corner is dominated by the bed, while another corner has a pile of beanbags and cushions in it. There's another door off it.

"Bathroom,"' Chelle says as she turns her bedside lamp on. "And," she pulls open a drawer, "snack supply. Have at."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev sits Nova on the bed, making sure he's settled, before letting go to investigate the snack cupboard. He nods his head to the dog to go over to Nova.

He looks up at 'Chelle. "Thank you. We- we haven't had kindness like yours and your father's in some time. I don't mean to seem ungrateful it's just-" He looks over at Nova, and his mouth sets into grim line, his eyes desperately sad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dog: immediately floomps its head into Nova's lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle smiles sadly at him. "We don't think you're ungrateful," she assures him. "You've obviously both been hurt. And you've learned to protect yourselves. We're sad you had to. But we're glad you survived."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes a lost confused sound at that. Because they don't know him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev turns away, eyes closed like he's in pain to hear that sound from Nova. Once only 'Chelle can see his face, he opens his eyes. He knows he looks devastated. "I just want him safe," he whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps ever so slightly closer to him, reaching for his hand unconsciously, squeezing it gently. "And you have us now. We can take some of the weight. Look after you as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes her hand in his too, and squeezes back. He drops his head onto her shoulder, only just managing to stifle a sobbing breath. He can't cry right now.

"Thank you, 'Chelle."

Permalink Mark Unread

She risks hooking her free arm around his shoulders to give him a gentle hug. "Any time, käraste, any time."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nova envies her the ease she can give Zev what he so obviously needs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a final squeeze and steps back. "I'm gonna leave you two be for now, huh? Feel free to lock the door. I'm heading out soon, so it'll just be Dad left probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles, tipping his head back. "I don't believe I know that word." He hugs her back. "Gracias, amigo."

He steps back, seemingly a little lighter than before. "We'll get some rest. Nova especially," he says looking fondly at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good," she agrees, and slips out of the room, closing the door behind her.

Permalink Mark Unread

His face falls almost the second 'Chelle leaves. He's quick to lock the door behind her, before facing Nova.

"Hungry?" he asks, even as he goes to the drawer. There's a large variety of shapes and colours. He's going to have to guess on what is in it from pictures on the packaging. "Do you feel like pink or green or brown?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs, and just keeps stroking Esca's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

He squints at a bar shaped package. He recognises, vaguely, some of the words, or at least knows what they allude to. "I think this one is chocolate. I'm not entirely certain though.' He grabs it and walks back over to Nova, but stops, seeing something in his face. He seems...distant.

Zev hands him the bar, and sits at his feet, next to the dog. "You didn't do anything wrong," he tries to assure.

Permalink Mark Unread

He takes the bar, but doesn't seem to know what to do with it, staring blankly at it, made doubly uncertain by Zev's sitting at his feet. "I- I know?" he doesn't sound at all certain of that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev reaches up to take the bar back, long enough to strip the packaging back. He hands it back to Nova once he's done. He leans his head against Nova's knee. "You didn't. Do. Anything. Wrong." He doesn't mean just today.

All of a sudden, sitting there feels wrong. He stands, climbs onto the bed behind Nova. He sits behind him, legs either side of him. He wraps his arms around Nova's chest, tugging him back towards him. His lips are close to his neck. "You. Did. Nothing. Wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's the briefest moment when the position is far too familiar, but-

But it's Zev. And it's- comfortable. He leans back against him. "As- as you say."

(He still isn't eating the bar.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't-" He can't hear that. He heard him say that so many times to- them. "Don't ever say that to me. I would rather you hate me."

Nova leans into him and he takes the chance to press his head into Nova's shoulder. It would be his lips, but he is so terrified of what that would mean for Nova that he doesn't. When he looks up, the bar is uneaten. "Nova. Please. Eat it." He pauses. "Would you like me to eat something too? Would that make it easier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I- please? Please?" he shakes a little. "You need it." ('More than me,' goes unsaid, but Zev probably knows him well enough.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't have to hear it said. He knows. He knows exactly what Nova means. He can picture exactly, months ago, Nova sitting apart from the rest of them in the compound. While Zevran...ate.

He swallows it down, everything that is threatening to come out. Tears, fury, demands that there is no way, no way, that Zevran is more important than Nova. He is all that matters.

"Okay," he finally says. He unwraps himself from Nova, already feeling cold from the lack of contact, and retrieves food for himself. He settles back next to Nova, ensuring they were pressed together. "Okay. I have mine. Now you have to eat yours." That would usually be delivered with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova manages a small smile. At least now he knows Zev is eating. And that's important.

He nibbles at his own bar, hoping he'll eat the whole thing. He doesn't want to worry Zev more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev doesn't even know the flavour that he chose. It tastes like cardboard to him, though he doesn't know if that's because that's how it tastes or because that's how he feels. He eats it though, if only to make sure Nova eats his.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova manages to finish the bar, just, and goes back to petting Esca.

Permalink Mark Unread

He...he doesn’t know what to do. He wants-

He wants-

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca tries to climb into their laps, trying to give them both comfort.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at Esca, but directs him to snuggle on Nova more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca is fairly insistent on cuddling them both. And is large enough to do so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev obediently pats the dog, though cats are his preference.

His eyes don’t leave Nova. He wants to be better for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

About ten minutes later there's a low whistle from downstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is absolutely no reaction from the dog.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova looks like he might be going to drift off sat upright.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Nova. Nova, here,” Zev moves away so Nova can lie down, though he keeps a hand on his leg. “Lie down.”

He looks at the dog. “You hanging around then?”

Permalink Mark Unread

He certainly doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova lets Zev guide him to lying, reaching, in a surprising display of confidence, to grab Zev's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's plan was to make sure Nova went to sleep, then head downstairs to talk to Aaren about what the hell happened, but...

He knew that whenever he had a choice, and one of them was hold Nova, Nova would win every time.

He knelt next to the bed, Nova's hand cradled in his, head leaning on the mattress close to Nova's. "I'm not going anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova relaxes a little, lets his eyes close.

"Thanks," he mumbles sleepily. "F'r everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev shuffles closer. "Thank you, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova takes that as permission enough to move close enough he can rest his head on Zev's shoulder. (Even if he can't understand why Zev's thanking him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev chuckles. "Mi vida, there are pillows there," he chides gently, but lays his head on top of Nova's.

He likes very much that this has become their norm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova almost pulls away at Zev's teasing, but relaxes against him when he feels Zev's head resting against his own.

He can drift off here, with surprising ease.

Permalink Mark Unread

He watches the tension drain out of Nova's body, and tries to make his shoulder as comfortable as possible for Nova.

And then he just watches him sleep. He does mull over a few things, namely what the hell they're going to do next, but for now Nova is safe and warm and has access to running water and food. That's enough for the moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

An hour later there's a quiet knock on the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev has managed to stay awake, though the temptation to crawl up next to Nova was...a lot. He looks up at the door when he hears the knock, frowning. He could just ignore it. Nothing says he has to get up and go see.

Carefully, he eases Nova's head from his shoulder onto the bed. He makes sure Nova is comfortable, then stands up, ruffling Esca's fur as he goes past.

He unlocks the door and opens it enough that Aaren can see his face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren smiles gently, holds up a tray with two steaming bowls, two glasses and a carafe of water. "Lunch," he says quietly. "Figured you might not be ready to come out just yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles, a little grimly, but it's there. "Nova's still asleep. I don't want to wake him. Thank you, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. You can still eat in the meantime," Aaren suggests gently, holding the tray out. "It's fresh off the hob, so it'll hold the heat for a while. And if it's cold when he wakes up, it can be reheated."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks back into the room. Nova looks actually peaceful for once, and the dog is happily keeping him company. He would almost be tempted to leave him alone.

But not yet.

"Thank you." He takes the tray from Aaren. He goes to turn away from the door, then pauses. He looks back. "What...what happened? With Ange?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's not even sure," Aaren admits, looking thoughtful and concerned. "She's never encountered anyone who makes her react like that. She's gone to do some research. As soon as we know anything, I will let you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She truly had no idea that...that might happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she had, she would have warned you. Her father, and now she, run a... boarding house. For supernaturals who need somewhere safe. She really doesn't like scaring people who have already been hurt.

"She did ask me to pass on her apologies to you and Nova. It was anything but her intention to scare him or make him think he did something wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will...I will let him know that. I don't think he will believe it, however."

He seems thoughtful for a moment. "Being in a boarding house with others like him might help." He doesn't seem happy about the idea, but it's something for him to consider.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you two want to go, Ange will happily take you in. That wasn't a suggestion, more an...explanation of who Ange is. But it is an option if you want it to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what to do from here," he admits. It doesn't come easily. "This is the safest we've been since we left, but you are still a stranger. And so is she. I...I just thought that it would be good for him not to feel so alone."

He thought he was talking about Nova's magic, but the words seem to come from somewhere deeper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You take it one step at a time. And step one is eating that soup. And step two is deciding whether you want to stay. I hope step three is a good dinner here, a quiet evening, and a good night's sleep in an actual bed rather than the bathroom, but that's your choice."

Pause, soft, sad smile. "Enjoy your lunch, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." I hope it's our choice too, he doesn't say. He heads back into 'Chelle's room, closing the door behind him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca sits up a little at his return, but doesn't actually move from where he is, still resting his head across Nova's legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's stirred a little, and is watching Zev through half-open eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev drops the tray onto the nearest flat surface, and turns back to lock the door. If only to give Nova a bit of peace of mind. He then pours himself a glass of water, meaning only to sip it, but realises one sip in that's he's terribly thirsty. He drains the entire glass in seconds, replacing it back on the tray. He pours himself a second glass, and then looks over at the bed, intending to check on Nova.

And his heart stops. Nova is half-asleep, his eyes watching him but not entirely focused. He looks relaxed, like he could slip back under any second.
This is all Zev wanted. This was exactly the Nova Zev wanted to see, for so long. He puts the glass down without paying attention, and slips to his knees besides Nova, eyes wide with wonder and smiling softly. "Hey there. There's more food if you're hungry, but if you want to sleep some more, you should."

He ever so gently raises a hand to stroke across Nova's head, his heart now thudding painfully with just how much he loves this boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks a bit. "...more food?" he sounds so hopelessly lost at that idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Outwardly, he keeps smiling, but inside he can feel his stomach drop. He knows exactly why Nova is surprised. Food for him was a reward, not a necessity. Zev mourns the fact he couldn't kill more of those monsters the night he and Nova escaped.

"Yes, mi vida. Soup, I think. Not sure what of...though it seems edible?" He says, trying to sound cheery. Since Nova doesn't seem to mind, he keeps stroking his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nova doesn't want to sit up. Wants Zev to keep stroking his head. But...

"Should- eat while we can?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good idea." Zev also does not want to stop touching Nova, but for necessity's sake he must. He cups Nova's face gently for a moment, then pulls away. He lets Nova sit up first before retrieving their lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova leans a little into the touch before pushing himself into a sitting position, leaning against the headboard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca shifts obligingly, and woofs softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev hands Nova a bowl and spoon. He fills the other glass with water and leaves it in arm's reach. He then grabs his own and sits facing Nova, pulling the sleeve of his hoodie over his hand to hold the bowl.

"Ange sends her apologies, and wants to make sure you know that she didn't want to frighten you," Zev says after a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova cradles the bowl close to his chest, hands seemingly unbothered by the scorching ceramic.

"...why?" (Why was she apologising? Why hadn't she intended? Why did she care enough to apologise?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"...are you sure you're not hurting yourself, doing that?" Zev can't help but be concerned. He's not a fire elemental, and doesn't understand magic at all, but he worries.

"She runs a...home. For untrained magic users. Like you. She would probably like to see you again. To train you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'fine," he assures, trading the bowl to his other hand so he can hold up his hand - completely free of anything remotely resembling a burn.

"Oh," he says quietly to the last. "I- do I have to go there?" (He doesn't want to leave Zev, doesn't want Zev to leave him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. You don't have to do anything. It's just something else to think about." He looks up and smiles at Nova, but is quick to look back down again.

It would be better for him, no? To be around others like him, to be away from someone who most likely reminds him everyday of the place he came from-

Zev lurches forward slightly as a cold stab of disgust rips through his stomach. He quickly covers it up with a cough, smiling at Nova again, but his whole body feels cold.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I don't," he says, doesn't know how to say 'not unless you come too', doesn't want to say something that makes Zev think he has to stay with Nova, or drives Zev away. "Want to go there?" he clarifies, staring down at his soup, because he can't look at Zev right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It-" What? Might be nice to meet other people? To have an actual home? To be away from Zevran?

The first two he's not sure about. The third...Nova told him that Zev doesn't hurt. He shrinks into Zev when he's scared, leans on Zev when he needs him. Zev wouldn't take that away from Nova, ever. He just...he doesn't know how much of that is good for Nova, and how much is just Zev desperate for whatever crumbs of affection he can get.

"You don't have to make a decision right now, mi alma." The endearment surprises him, but it seems fitting. Wherever Nova went, he'd be taking a part of Zevran's soul with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Won't change my mind," and Nova sounds as close to stubborn as he ever has.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a shocked look from Zev, mostly for the forwardness of Nova's tone. "You haven't even been there yet?" He says automatically, brain still struggling to catch up with the idea that Nova was being...stubborn?

Permalink Mark Unread

He stifles a chuckle.

Permalink Mark Unread

He ducks so his words are mostly mumbled into his bowl, barely audible. "Wouldn't have you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't have-"

Zev is so shocked he nearly upends the bowl of soup. He rights it quickly, and then just moves it back onto the tray. "I...I said I'd stay with you. I-"

No. No, this won't do. He can't say this like he's ashamed of it. He carefully moves closer, trying not to upset Nova's food, and leans in close. "I have nowhere else I would rather be than by your side. I swear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still staring down into his bowl, although there's a small smile on his lips. "I- thanks. Really. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have nothing to thank me for."

And so much to hate me for, he thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nova wants to argue, but doesn't know how to. Doesn't say 'as you say', because Zev had asked him not to. Just nods, looks for somewhere to put his bowl - he wants to hug Zev, or be hugged, but he can't do that with the bowl in his hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev takes the bowl, placing it with his on the tray.

Permalink Mark Unread

...how do you hug someone if they don't hug you first? Nova doesn't know how to start that, still isn't sure he's allowed to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev hasn't looked up since he placed Nova's bowl back on the table, though he hasn't shifted back on the bed. They're very close together.

Permalink Mark Unread

He manages to make himself reach out, fingers brushing very slightly against Zev's leg.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev starts, and looks up. He can see exactly what Nova needs; what he needs. He hates himself for needed it so badly from someone who shouldn't have to force himself to.

"Come here," he says softly, shifting closer to envelope Nova in a hug, tucking his face into his shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes easily, tucking in against Zev, not quite happily, but as close to as he knows how.

Permalink Mark Unread

He holds him as tightly as he can allow, one hand gently creeping up to hold the back of Nova's neck.

"Te amo," he says into Nova's shoulder, trying not to cry at the sheer hopelessness he feels. He wants to tell Nova, but he knows if he does, Nova will feel indebted. And he can't allow that. He just...he wants Nova to know that there is someone who loves him unconditionally, that does not expect anything from him. Wants, absolutely, but if all Nova could offer him were smiles, Zev would take them happily. Greedily.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't have a response to that, doesn't know how to tell Zev everything he feels. (Knows Zev doesn't think he knows, and doesn't want to tell Zev he does, because he doesn't want Zev to hurt him, and That always did, and if he told Zev he felt the same...Zev would want that, wouldn't he?) Instead, he stays curled against Zev, clinging slightly to him, hoping this will be enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's both. It's enough and not enough; the highest pleasure and the sweetest torture.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, they're probably going to be like this for a little while, because Nova isn't pulling away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tucks himself in a bit closer, wondering the logistics of just clinging onto Nova like an overgrown limpet for all of time.

He has no plans to move away either.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're left alone for a few hours before they can hear the front door opening, and footsteps up the stairs.

There's a knock at the door. "Just to let you know I'm back," 'Chelle calls through. "My mate Lan's here as well if you want to come say hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev had relocated to Nova's side, curled up around as much of him as he thought was okay. He had been just quietly enjoying being held.

"Mff?" He questioned at the knock. "'Chelle?" He said a little louder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, just me. Feel free to stay put, was just letting you know I was home. Dad says dinner's in half an hour either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova tucks himself a little tighter against Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Looks like they’re staying for dinner. Zev finds himself not minding that particular decision.

“I’m afraid there is not much that would make me leave this bed before then, ‘Chelle!”

It is mostly meant to be a joke, but when Nova tightens his hold on him, Zev finds himself to be far more truthful than he thought. “Unless you want to go?” He asks into Nova’s hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova half-shrugs, half shakes his head. "M'fine here, f'you are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine! I'll come give you a chap about five minutes before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m not so curious about new friends that I will give up my spot right here, mi vida.” Accompanies the words with a gentle nudge to Nova’s head.

“Thank you, ‘Chelle.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anytime, käraste."

Permalink Mark Unread

Twenty five minutes later, as promised, there's another chap on the door. "Come and get it before Lan proves he's a black hole!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev acknowledges ‘Chelle’s call, and then starts the very unwelcome task of unwinding himself from Nova.

“Let’s go get some food, Nova,” he coaxed gently, slowly taking his arm back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hesitantly tangles their fingers together before he can withdraw completely.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You’ve made my job much more pleasurable, as well as much harder,” Zev says, gazing at their joined hands fondly.

He then awkwardly shifts over Nova (being careful not to touch him too much and also avoid the dog), before his feet hit the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova ducks his head, smiling, and shifts with Zev so they're both standing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca jumps off the bed and waits between the bed and the door, looking back at them expectantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran goes to follow the dog, pulling Nova along, but his eyes stop on the tray.

It would be rude to assume other people should clean up after them, right?

He squeezes Nova’s hand in apology, before letting go to pick the tray up. He offers his elbow in compensation, if Nova would like something to hold.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's hesitant, but hooks his hand into Zev's elbow.

Permalink Mark Unread

He squeezes Nova’s hand as best he can. “I think you’ll have to open the door for me.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that," Nova says, and when they reach the door, does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle is leaning against the banister, messing around with her phone. She looks up when the door opens, and tucks her phone into a pocket. "Here, I can take that tray."

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives her a grateful smile, and hands it over, immediately entwining his and Nova's hands again.

Strange that his hand feels empty without his now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova smiles, as close to happily as he has ever managed.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle grins and leads them down to the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's another teenager setting the table, and he looks up and smiles warmly. "Yo. I'm Lan, itenerant freeloader and handsomest friend of 'Chelle's."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Teo's prettier than you," Aaren says from beside the stove.

Permalink Mark Unread

He keeps Nova behind him, but smirks. "Seems you overestimated your handsomeness, Lan."

He heads towards the table, tugging Nova along. "I'm Zev. This is Nova."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas, Dad is determined to wound me," Lan says cheerfully, not sounding at all wounded. "Pleasure to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi," Nova says shyly, perfectly willing to stay sheltered behind Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad isn't wrong, Teo is very pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And yet you brought around this one instead." Zev's stomach is still uneasy with the stranger, but it was so easy to fall into banter with 'Chelle. He felt comfortable around her.

He pulls out a chair for Nova, and same as this morning, brings the other closer to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh, this one followed me home." 'Chelle pokes Lan's side playfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of following people home, hey Esca."

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca briefly leaves Nova and Zev's side to jump up, rest his front paws in Lan's shoulders, lick his face, before dropping back to the ground and padding back to Nova's side, looking smug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, he appears to have adopted Nova." He smiles very approvingly at the dog.

Permalink Mark Unread

Woof!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova keeps his head ducked, but scratches Esca's ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Remember that Esca did adopt that clutch of orphaned ducks that one time."

Aaren hands Lan two plates that are promptly deposited in front of Zev and Nova, while 'Chelle brings hers and Lan's. It's a simple enough meal, grilled chicken, boiled potatoes with a little butter and fresh vegetables that look the correct colour.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev makes sure Nova is eating his portion before he starts on his own. "The dog can wait a few minutes while you eat, mi vida," he says fondly.

He does keep one eye on Lan, however.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of," Aaren says, picking up a bowl off the counter. "Here, Esca."

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca doesn't move.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren has a brief staring contest with the dog. Which he loses. "How does Drex deal with you?" he asks fondly crouching down to slide the bowl over to Esca without approaching before grabbing his own plate and joining them at the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan, meanwhile, is giving Zev a considering look. "Spanish?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tilts his head. "I believe so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds it. I speak a little. Parents insisted," he rolls his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...wait. They actually insisted on something?"

"Shocking I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

...These people are very confusing. Nova keeps his head down and eats his food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my first language. English-" The cult insisted on. "English is confusing sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"French is actually my first language," Lan admits. "And I know what you mean, until 'Chelle and Dad got their hands on me, English was hopelessly confusing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aunt Ange still forgets words," 'Chelle adds.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd have an easier time learning French. At least the grammar makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense, same family of languages and all. Try learning English and Swedish at the same time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You managed just fine, Sparky. You speak Swedish better than I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Explains why I didn't know...sharesteh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Farmor - uh, my grandma - insisted I learned. I'm glad I did before we lost her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I miss Farmor's almond tarts..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren doesn't look up from his tablet. "I have the recipe, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not the sa~ame."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...you'll still make us them though, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Jitterbug, I'll still make you almond tarts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry for your loss."

Zev and Nova didn't have families. Zev doesn't know what it's like to mourn a person. He knows how to kill them.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle leans over to squeeze his forearm. "Thank you, it was a while ago and she had an amazing life, and she was like...ninety five by the time she went? But thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev doesn't know how to respond to that so he just offers a smile.

People around him don't often live to 95.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's started playing with the end of his food, moving it around to try and make it look like he's eaten more than he has - he doesn't want to worry Zev, but there really is far too much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev notices this. "It's okay. We're taking it slowly." He shows Nova his own plate. His appetite used to be bigger than Nova's, but he used to be a soldier.

He takes Nova's hand again, squeezing it, trying to comfort him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans into Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It really is okay," Aaren assures. "Please don't make yourself sick for the sake of clearing your plates."

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans right back into Nova, tucking his head momentarily into Nova's shoulder.

"Thank you, Aaren." He means the dinner, for giving them space, for giving them safety-

For protecting Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome," Aaren assures him. "I'm glad I can help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We all are," Lan says cheerfully. Pauses. Opens his mouth to say something, and then closes his mouth, straight up pouting.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle laughs, tickles his side, and leans back in her chair, stretching. "Mmm. That was good, thanks, Dad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at 'Chelle, and half readies himself to take Nova back upstairs, but a glance at Lan makes him curious.

"It was a pleasure to meet you," he says entirely in Spanish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The pleasure was all mine," Lan responds, flawlessly and without a pause.

He winks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Undoubtedly."

Zev offers him his best raised eyebrow, before turning back to Nova. "Back upstairs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods-

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was gonna watch some nature documentaries if that's something you guys might be interested in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova almost brightens at that, but-

But Zev wants them to get back upstairs. He quickly squashes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev couldn't miss that brightness in Nova's eyes. His mouth broke out into a huge smile in response. He did dim it a bit, to respond to 'Chelle.

"That sounds fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good, I needed to finish sorting your actual room. I found 'Chelle's baby pictures and got a bit distracted-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, nature documentaries, now, before Dad pulls those downstairs to embarrass me!"

(She sounds strangely alright with that being an option though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hesitates, looking at the dishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go ahead," Lan encourages. "I'll help Dad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is also eyeing the dishes, but only because for the first time he feels like he needs to pay Aaren and 'Chelle back. He shakes off the thought, he's only known them two days and they've consistently said that he and Nova are free to go at any time.

"Mi vida," he says gently, coaxing Nova to follow him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova follows him, tucking tight against his side.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle skips ahead of them into the living room, scooping up the remote up on route to the far chair, flicking the TV on and immediately hitting for a different channel.

The rucksack is still exactly where Zev left it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev also notices that. He makes a note to grab it when they leave. He remembers how uneasy he was about leaving it just this morning, and yet here it still is.

He flops down onto the sofa dramatically, pulling Nova down with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes a sound that could almost be a giggle, and cuddles into Zev's side. (He's allowed this, and he can't get enough of the soft, comforting touches.)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle throws a blanket over Zev's head with one hand.

"We have," she announces dramatically. "Lemurs, sharks, or...okay, that looks like economics of populations growth and the fact that we're overpopulating the planet. We have lemurs or sharks. Preferences?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev looks to Nova for help, brows crossed hopefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Either sounds good. He shrugs a little. "I- either? I don't-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You prefer I ask if Lan or Dad has a preference? Or just pick one? Lemurs are really cute, but sharks are incredible, they're like...the oldest known predator, and they've barely evolved in millennia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lemurs." Zevran says as soon as 'Chelle says the word 'predator'. He tucks the blanket around him and Nova, cuddling into him as much as he did.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not gonna get me disagreeing," 'Chelle says flicking onto that channel and shuffling herself down in her chair, legs thrown over one arm, and one arm tucked behind her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's happy to lean against Zev's side snuggled up with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan wanders in five minutes in. "Oooh, lemurs, excellent."

He crosses behind the sofa, tousles Zev's hair, and floomps down on the floor in front of 'Chelle. "Dad chased me out of the kitchen for trying to scour his frying pan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're playing with fire, mussing my hair like that," Zev says, grinning.

Zev swaps hands so he can tuck an arm around Nova again. He liked the way they were cuddled up on the bed. He would not mind repeating it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shifts obligingly, more than willing to curl up like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You stole my favourite jumper," Lan sounds anything but upset. "And don't get me wrong, it looks fabulous on you. But that still requires some payback."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle's playful shush would put a librarian to shame. "Lemurs," she says mock sternly, pointing at the TV.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jumpers, of course, famously known for being difficult to remove."

Nova curls into his side and he loses most functional thought. He noses into Nova's hair, wrapping himself as tightly as he can around him. He then makes sure the blanket is tucked in snugly around them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle meanwhile has thwapped Lan gently on the head with a cushion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan giggles, steals it off her and tucks it behind his back, leaning his head back on the chair where 'Chelle can run her fingers through his hair.

(...Is he purring at her touch?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren comes in at that point carrying a tray of steaming mugs. "Tea all around," he declares, but leaves it on the coffee table, taking a mug back to the other seat, rather than distributing them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan strains one arm before making a pathetic sound as he can't get it to reach far enough to grab a mug without moving his head away from 'Chelle's petting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev laughs. "Are you some sort of overgrown cat?" he says to Lan, though does not blame him. He feels a lot like purring himself.

He does not like tea much himself, but looks to Nova, before reaching to get a cup for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Chelle's fingers are just magic," Lan argues. Yelps a little when the pets turn to a poke, and grumbles as he leans forward to pick up to mugs, passing one up to 'Chelle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova will shift with Zev, trying not to pull too far away, and will happily accept a mug, wrapping one hand around it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren doesn't bother hiding his surely dumb smile as he watches the four teens. (He wishes it was easier to snap subtle pictures, because Ange would want to see this for sure.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't say it was a bad thing. I happen to like cats. Very much."

Zev wraps a hand over Nova's, enjoying the warmth from his hands and the mug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cats are good," Lan agrees, and then falls silent, tilting his head to give 'Chelle easier access.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev falls quiet too, content for the first time in a long while. He rests his head on Nova's, tucking his feet under his body, and lets himself actually relax.

Permalink Mark Unread

The evening continues peacefully, with only a mild bicker between Lan and 'Chelle about what they're going to watch next when the lemurs end. They find something equally adorable, but it takes a good five minutes of argument about whether lizards or monkeys are cuter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev had meant to just curl up on Nova, nuzzle into his neck and maybe go to sleep, but he finds himself sitting upright, enraptured by the look in Nova's eyes. He looks utterly entranced by the documentary, and Zev would not dare look away for a second.

Permalink Mark Unread

And yeah, he's utterly enthralled, barely remembering the tea in his hand - although it doesn't seem to stop steaming.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren doesn't really want to call and end to tonight, but it's getting late, and Nova and Zev clearly still need more sleep.

"I think it might be time for all of us to head to bed," he suggests, stretching.

Permalink Mark Unread

It’s not a bad idea. He and Nova have had sporadic naps, but getting to have an actual unbroken night of sleep would be good.

“Perhaps we can watch more in the morning?” He says to Nova, wanting to see that light in his eyes. Then he realises what he said. He doesn’t take it back, but he feels...uncomfortable.

He glances at the backpack.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's always more documentaries," 'Chelle agrees cheerfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure Dad pays more to get all the nature documentary channels, and there's some under the table money to make sure there's always a good selection."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova looks to Zev - he wasn't sure Zev wanted to stay, but he couldn't deny that the idea of getting to watch more documentaries tomorrow was appealing. His eagerness shows, even though he's hiding it with his usual practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

The uncomfortable feeling in his chest is beginning to feel a lot like panic.

He tightens his grip on Nova’s hand, but smiles back at his eagerness. “Where are we sleeping? We can’t possibly take ‘Chelle’s room again.” He even sounds more brittle.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Aaren sees the look, takes a careful breath before responding.

"Yeah, upstairs again, I'll show you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna go and collapse in bed before 'Chelle steals all the covers," Lan gets to his feet, stretching and yawning and heading out of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle chuckles and follows him out, "I don't need to steal the covers, you deposit most of them on me when you start snuggling."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova can see Zev's reaction as well, and squeezes his hand, feeling his own chest tighten in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

He’s frightening Nova. He didn’t mean to, he doesn’t ever want to-

He shoves the feelings deep inside, burying them so his smile seems less forced. “We’ll follow you?” He takes the blanket off them both, though loops it over his arm.

He then reaches out and picks up the backpack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays tight to Zev's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren doesn't even acknowledge him picking up the backpack, doesn't even seem to notice - and maybe it's obvious that he's ignoring it, but he is ignoring it. He leads them up the stairs, and pushes open the door of the room that's a mirror to 'Chelle's, although with less personal touches spread around, and in less vibrant colours.

"Bathroom," Aaren points, "bed. Sleep well, huh?" (He wants to hug Zev, and Nova, has seen how well Zev's responding to Lan and 'Chelle's casual affection, and how well Nova's responding to Zev, but he doesn't think either of them are ready for him to do that yet, reminds himself they're probably still not staying, even if he hopes they do.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods, giving Aaren an attempt at a grateful smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles back warmly. "I'm going to go check everything's off downstairs, so you'll hear me moving around a little."

And he goes to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zevran shuts and locks the door behind him, leaning his head against it for a moment, taking in deep breaths.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hesitates for a moment before stepping closer again and leaning slightly against Zev's back, not quite hugging him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s selfish, so when Nova is pressed against his back, he turns to take him in his arms, hugging him.

“We- I-“ he can’t seem to actually voice a sentence.

Permalink Mark Unread

He presses closer to Zev when he turns to hug him. Doesn't know how to reassure him. He's not good with words.

Permalink Mark Unread

He knew he’d not be able to hold it back forever. That one day the dam would break.

He did not realise that today would be the day something had to give.

He wraps his arms tighter around Nova, pressing his face into his neck. He takes one, shuddering breath.

And then the sobs start.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova has no idea what to do when Zev starts sobbing. He holds him tightly, rests one hand on the back of Zev's head and strokes the other tentatively up and down his back.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. You- I could’ve gotten you out yea-years ago. If I’d just- if I’d just opened my eyes I would’ve seen- I’m so sorry.”

Nova was trying to comfort him, and a part of him was so desperate for that he savoured every second. But he was so horrified by how Nova was the one protecting him, Nova, the one of them who’d been through so much more.

“And now you’re trapped again.” Maybe not in this house. But certainly with Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-no- you- you did. Get me out. And- and we're not. We could leave. They said we could. It's fine."

He isn't even aware, really, of what he's saying, just trying to stop Zev from feeling bad.

"You couldn't've known." (Nova hadn't wanted Zev to know, hadn't wanted him to think any less of him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“No, no, you shouldn’t want to leave just because I say so. You- if you want to stay we should stay. I don’t...”

I don’t want to tell you what to do. I don’t want to dictate your life. I want to protect you, and if that means accepting that someone else can do it better, I will

Zev pulls away enough to cup Nova’s face in both hands and press their foreheads together. His breath is still coming in shuddering jolts, but as he closes his eyes, he feels calmer.

“I don’t want you to be trapped by me.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova presses closer to him again, and yeah, he's clinging a bit, but-

"M'not," he says. "I keep- you- keep. Looking after me and-" (And you shouldn't, and I'm not worth it, and I don't know how to make you stay.) "And I- I want to- it's- we look after each other?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev opens his eyes. His heart feels too heavy to keep beating.

“You shouldn’t have to protect me,” he says. Then he pulls Nova back in close, hugging him tightly. “But thank you. Thank you so much.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You- you- I want to." Doesn't argue that Zev needs protecting, just stays hugged close to Zev, still clinging.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev breathes in harshly at that. He wants to as well.

He would never put Nova in harm’s way, but wouldn’t it be easier to just let him know when things are wearing on him?

He does feel a thrill of fear at the idea of that, coming from never wanting to scare Nova away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We-we help each other? Right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...yeah. Yes. We help each other."

Zev presses his forehead to Nova's again. He seems much better.

Permalink Mark Unread

...This is good. This is nice.

Nova yawns.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev notices.

"Come on," he says, pulling out of Nova's arms to take his hand and lead him over to the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova follows him, still clinging to his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev, one handed, pulled back the cover. He looked back at his and Nova’s joined hands.

“I am...wondering about the logistics of this,” he said, sounding amused, which was a better feeling than the weight on his heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs, ducking his head with a shy smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

“This is possibly going to be the least graceful you’ve ever seen me. I apologise, profusely, in advance.”

Without dropping Nova’s hand, Zev clambers onto the bed, twisting to get himself under the covers without pulling Nova too much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova giggles quietly, and hesitantly slides in after him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Nova’s in, Zev twists again to make sure the cover is pulled right over him.

“Warm enough?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhmm," Nova hums sleepily - it's not entirely true, but this is warmest he remembers being.

Permalink Mark Unread

It’s the warmest Zev’s been for a while, and he thinks most of it comes from the fact that for the first time since they escaped, Zev isn’t forcing himself to stay away from Nova, convinced that’s what he wants.

Now, with Nova’s hand wrapped in his, and Nova looking close to sleep without being exhausted, he feels...better.

“Te amo,” he says quietly, trying not to disturb Nova’s slip away into sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm. You too," he mumbles, snuggling closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's smile beams at the idea that Nova knew what he was saying. A nice thought, something to be treasured. But he didn't. Not yet.

"Get some sleep," he says gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Y'too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that proved it. Zev had a feeling he could say anything at this point and that would be Nova's response.

He listens though, and shifts a bit to get comfortable, bringing their joined hands close to his chest. He closes his eyes, and lets his breathing even out.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, there's a knock on their door. "Rise and shine, sleepyhead, breakfast is being served!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's been awake for a while, but hasn't moved, busy basking in warmth.

Hearing Lan, though, pulls him out of day dreaming, staring at Nova's face.

"Hear that? We're being summoned," he says to Nova, squeezing his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's been awake for a while too, just enjoying this, and not opening his eyes in case it spoiled the moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tell him to go away. We can lie here pretending we don't know the other is awake for a bit longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova giggles. "Y'need to eat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You need to eat," he says, trying to sound petulant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You both need to eat, but feel free to ignore Lan!" 'Chelle calls, obviously on her way down the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if 'Chelle says it must be true."

He does not move.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova doesn't either, except to shuffle closer. He looks a little concerned, but isn't going to argue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev notices this. He doesn't blame him for being concerned. Zev won't be able to forget fainting their first night here anytime soon.

"All right. We both don't want to, but we both know we must. So!" Zev flings the covers off as dramatically as possible, sitting up.

Permalink Mark Unread

...And Nova is trying to muffle his giggles now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is delighted to hear those muffled sounds.

"Are you laughing at me? Nova, mi vida, the betrayal!" He says, leaning in close enough to tuck his head between Nova's neck and shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- um yes?" he is fairly sure Zev is just teasing. "I just- it was funny." He cuddles Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev folds easily into Nova's arms. "I may never recover."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah you will," Nova says certainly. "-weren't we supposed to be getting up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why would I do that when I am so comfortable right here?" Zev takes a chance and just collapses on top of Nova, though taking care to not actually hurt him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova giggles quietly again, sounding very fond. "S'ppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mi vida, that sounds shockingly like a surrender. We may have to spend all day here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova takes a chance and pokes playfully at Zev's stomach. "Food."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev feigns injury. "Oh, I am felled! Felled by a boy I thought cared!" He nuzzles Nova.

"Okay. You make a fair point. But good luck getting me upright."

Permalink Mark Unread

The gets him another giggle, and Nova slipping out from underneath him to stand up, stretching slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nooooooo," Zev protests weakly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Food," he repeats insistently, reaching out, surprisingly bold, to tug on Zev's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev feels like his heart could beat right out of his chest.

“Fine!” He says, grinning. He lets Nova haul him out of bed. He feels...actually happy. “Food, then.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova gives Zev a soft smile and then heads for the door, but stops fairly quickly, looking back at Zev, mutely asking him to go first.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev grips Nova’s hand comfortingly, and takes the lead easily. He’s always been happy to be Nova’s shield.

He unlocks the door and opens it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The landing is empty as they make their way down, but chatting and laughter can be heard from the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I swear," Aaren's voice is playfully irritated. "I don't understand how Ange manages to not break her ankles with you winding around underfoot in her kitchen."

Permalink Mark Unread

Woof!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the one feeding him scraps, Dad, it's your own fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev falls into step beside Nova to walk into the kitchen. He would normally stand between him and everything, but he felt okay to try and step back.

“Morning.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca leaves off pestering Aaren and bounds over to them, stopping and half sitting back, tail wagging eagerly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning," Lan says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...did Lan pester you out of bed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“He gave it a very good effort.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do apologise, for someone who is not a morning person, he's doing a surprisingly good job of being a morning person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my defence, 'Chelle woke me up two hours ago to help her defend the NHS in an Internet argument."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sparky, didn't we have an agreement about four a.m. internet arguments?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only to do them when I don't have school the next day!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s not really sure what they’re talking about, but the playful banter is amusing enough.

He takes the moment they’re talking to grab seats for him and Nova around the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle deposits a cup of tea and a cup of coffee in front of them. "Juice?" she offers. "We're running out, but have pineapple and orange? Me and Lan are going shopping today."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev cannot remember the last time he had juice. He's not even sure what pineapple would even taste like.

"Water is fine, thank you 'Chelle. Nova?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs, not really having an opinion one way or the other. He's used to water.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle nods, and fetches a jug of water, putting it in the middle of the table with glasses.

"Help yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did you sleep?" Aaren asks, handing Lan plates to bring to the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at Aaren. “Well, thank you.”

He looks at Nova, his smile widening. “Probably best we’ve had for some time.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods, smiling shyly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Seeing as these two are going shopping, is there anything you two don't like, or can't eat for us to avoid getting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“We weren’t given the choice. Before. We ate what they gave us.”

Zev moreso than Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Is there anything you don't like?" Aaren repeats. "I like cooking, and avoiding things you don't like is really not a hardship. Or is there anything you like that you never really got?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“...I wouldn’t know.” Zev tried to think, but a lot of the things Aaren has given them to eat were familiar. He’s not sure what else there is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Anything I give you, tell me if you like it or not. Everyone should know their favourite foods. If anything makes you feel funny, especially your mouth or throat, stop eating it immediately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're gonna overwhelm them, Dad."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Testing for allergies,” Zev guesses. It’s not a bad idea, though he and Nova didn’t react badly to the food at the shelter. He hopes that means it’s not something to worry about.

“We will tell you. Thank you, Aaren.” He means it. No one's taken care of them like him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's really no trouble. Besides. I like feeding new people. These two can be horrifyingly predictable and boring sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey!" Lan complains, adding two more plates to the table as he sits down.

Permalink Mark Unread

I would never describe you as predictable,” Zev says to Lan.

He smiles gratefully at him and takes his and Nova’s food, placing one in front of Nova with an encouraging look.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To be fair, we are actually predictable about or favourite meals," Lan admits. "But I have a reputation to maintain."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova starts eating, eyeing Zev to make sure he is eating as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what reputation is that?" He grins sunnily at Lan.

He takes Nova's cue and starts eating too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan's response is cut off by 'Chelle. "Pretty sure there's a rule about table-conversations needing to be in a language we all understand. You two keep that up I'm going to start responding to everything in Swedish." She sounds far more teasing than anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev shoots a guilty look at Nova. 'Chelle makes a point, he's keeping him out.

"Sorry. It's been some time since anyone knew anything more than 'hello', 'goodbye' and badly pronounced insults."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promise all my insults are correctly pronounced!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, we just agreed that conversations other people couldn't understand at the table were bad form. Anywhere else in the house, please, indulge yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova gives him a small smile back - it's okay, he likes hearing Zev speak Spanish.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smirks at Lan. "I'll be the judge of that, vato."

He takes Nova's hand for a moment, squeezing it. "Maybe I could teach you a few things?" It's never been necessary before, but right now it feels like they have time, more than they've ever had.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'D like that," Nova says shyly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me too."

Maybe one day I'll teach you 'te amo', he thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of breakfast passes uneventfully, and 'Chelle gets up to clear the dishes when they're all done.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles up at her when she takes his. He almost offers to help, but one look at Nova keeps him seated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once 'Chelle's finished clearing the dishes, Lan gets up, pulls a list off the front of the fridge. "This everything, Dad?" he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless you two can think of anything I've missed. You got your credit card, Sparky?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's in my purse, Dad, we got this."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Good luck,” Zev says. He’s been inside supermarkets recently.

Far too big. Far too much choice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a method! And a map of the supermarket! And a list that is, if Dad remembered, ordered in the same order as the supermarket!"

She strikes a dramatic pose and points towards the doors. "Onwards, Monsieur Aeolus, to glory!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jackets and boots first," Lan says, pushing 'Chelle out of the kitchen. "And car keys. I refuse to go to 'glory' on foot."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at them as they go, feeling...fond?

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle and Lan can be heard bickering cheerfully in the hall, then they both yell: "Bye Dad." and the sound of the door opening and closing can be heard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren shakes his head fondly. "Those two," he says fondly, then turns his attention to Zev and Nova.

"Did you two need anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev turns a knowing look on Nova. “I think there was something mentioned about...nature documentaries?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova ducks his head. "Uh, we don't- have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-nope, I do believe you were promised them. Let's go see what's on."

He heads through to the living room without checking to see if they're following.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You cannot hide that smile from me,” Zev murmurs, grinning.

He tugs Nova up and starts leading him into the living room. “Come on. Maybe they’ll have more tiny monkeys.”

Permalink Mark Unread

What they have instead, is red pandas, which is probably as good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays close to Zev, but can't stop the smile on his face when he sees what's on the screen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev makes sure Nova is tucked into his side on the couch, before he curls up himself, feet again tucked up under him.

“I thought pandas were...bigger.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Giant pandas are bigger," Aaren agrees. "But personally I think red pandas are better. I can see about arranging a trip to the zoo if you guys want to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova carefully doesn't react to that offer, staying focused on the pandas on the screen.

Permalink Mark Unread

“A zoo? Like...real animals?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. Good day out. ...Even if it is November."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I haven’t seen animals that don’t belong on a farm.”

An uneasiness does take over him for the briefest second, though he shrugs it off. How nefarious of Aaren, taking them to a public place.

“What do you think?” He asks Nova quietly, squeezing his shoulders.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs. "Don't mind." (He can't quite hide his interest entirely.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev knows Nova’s apprehension is different to his own. Similar themes, but different ending. He doesn’t blame Nova for that at all. He doubts Nova was allowed...interests.

“Something to think about. Maybe. The offer is kind, though.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't mention it to 'Chelle if you don't want to. You won't get a choice if she finds out she has an excuse to visit."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I have noticed it is incredibly difficult to say no to her.”

For all the very best reasons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova snuggles a little further into Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She learned a little too much from her Aunt. Ange is as stubborn as they come."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev turns his head as Nova burrows closer into him, and his lips just brush Nova’s temple. He tries very hard not to freeze, taking the momentary panic of nononotnowdontfreakhimout whathappenedtobabysteps?! and just cuddles him back, moving his mouth firmly away from Nova’s skin.

“Perhaps we’ll get a chance to see that for ourselves.” Zev would like Ange to return, to keep teaching Nova. Though safely, this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Nova notices or minds, he doesn't show it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you will." He looks to Nova. "She would like to keep teaching you if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tucks his head in the join of Nova’s neck and shoulders, just like he did this morning.

“This time we’ll all be more prepared.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We'll do better this time." The 'we' seems to be very much on him and Ange, not on Nova or Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev includes himself in that.

“She said that you need something to ground you. I can help with that. Perhaps I will drape myself over you like an octopus.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova ducks his head and giggles quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Heard that,” Zev says into Nova’s neck, grinning. Nova’s ducked head brings his cheek into very close proximity with his lips but Zev very forcefully does nothing about that.

He turns his attention back to the TV, though he does get a bit curious. “I suppose there isn’t much in Spanish? Not in a primarily English speaking place.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, we have a subscription to a variety of foreign language channels. There's probably a Spanish one in amongst that somewhere..."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a very curious look from Zev, but he simply files that knowledge away for later, content to doze off on Nova’s shoulder while he sits, fascinated, by tiny red ‘pandas’.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the morning passes with Nova enthralled by one documentary or another.

Permalink Mark Unread

Around lunch time, Aaren leaves long enough to make them sandwiches, before reclaiming his seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's mid-afternoon when Lan and 'Chelle return with the shopping.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev can be stirred long enough to be convinced to eat, eyes watching Nova the entire time, but once that’s done, he’s quick to settle back into Nova’s shoulder.

Upon hearing Lan and ‘Chelle’s voices, however, he sits up properly.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle sticks her head into the living room. "I come bearing tidings of food! And clothes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shifts to let Zev sit up, but stays close to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oi, 'Chelle, come and help me with these bags."

Permalink Mark Unread

“No, ‘Chelle, abandon Lan and join us! We’re watching-“

He peers at the screen. “Big cats?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, Lan," 'Chelle says cheerfully. "You heard Zev, higher calling and all that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova looks uncertain and opens his mouth as if to offer assistance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mean lions or tigers either, I mean-" He gestures at the screen. "They are actually just large cats."

He goes to joke at Nova about waking up and finding that, but the look on his face stops him. He goes to stop him, but realises he feels much the same. Though if he gets up and offers to help, he's not sure that would make it any better. So he does the thing he knows best and just flops on top of him, legs over his and arms wrapped around his chest.

"Octopus," he whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ocelots are actually about the size of housecats," 'Chelle says, sitting down in front of the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova giggles quietly at Zev's octopussing.

Permalink Mark Unread

...And 'Chelle actually squeaks. "Your giggle is adorable, Nova. We need to make you do it more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I concur. And also add that that squeak was adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head back and sticks her tongue out at him. "We already knew I was adorable. I'm gathering evidence on you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Da~ad, make her help me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren chuckles. "I'll come give you a hand. You two mess up my kitchen organisation if I don't intervene."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how goes the investigation?" Zev says, resting his chin on Nova's shoulder.

...until he is distracted by ocelot kittens. His eyes go huge. "Nova, I get the documentaries now. My god, look at their tiny feet. Look at the tiny feet!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm safe in declaring you both adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's torn between hiding his head in Zev's chest, and ocelot kittens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gives him gentle strokes up his arm to try and comfort him, but the kittens...

"'Chelle they all sound like you," Zev says dreamily as the tiny balls of fluff squeak.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle grins. "I'll take that as a compliment," she declares, pulling out her phone, and tapping something on the screen before she tucks it away again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan appears at the moment. "Okay, that's unfair, you get to watch ocelot kittens and I had to schlep shopping."

Grins at Nova and Zev. "Left the clothes outside your door, let us know if they don't fit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our..." The only clothes Zev remembers bringing were the ones he and Nova were wearing. He looks at Lan incredulously for a second, then 'Chelle.

"You bought us clothes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-didn't we mention that this was on the shopping list?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that I heard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...oops? Uh, yes? We got you clothes. Figured you could do with more than two changes, only one of them really yours. And no offence, Zev, but your clothes really didn't seem like your style."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's entire body relaxes. "Never mind no offence, that's a direct compliment," he chuckles.

"Though you didn't have to do that, you've given us so much already." He directs this at all three of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No," Aaren agrees. "But we wanted to."

Pauses.

"This doesn't change anything, and if- when," (and doesn't that hurt to say?) "you leave, those clothes are yours to take with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's heart sinks a little bit too. They were supposed to be leaving, that had been his plan. It doesn't feel completely like the right decision anymore.

"In any case, thank you. You're all- all more kind than we thought we'd find."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle offers him her hand. "Seems to me like you two were well overdue some kindness. Maybe we're the world's way of evening things out for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev takes it. "Maybe so."

His smile is a little rueful, but he's hopeful that's true. Nova needs somewhere soft to land, just once.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes his hand gently. "Anyway, ocelot kittens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ocelot kittens," Lan agrees gravely.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah. Nova's completely lost, doesn't know how they're supposed to pay this back. But-

But Zev seems happy. And that's something Nova hasn't seen enough. And Zev deserves to be happy, and Nova will do what he has to to make sure that continues.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any kind of kittens, let's all be truthful now."

Zev wraps limbs around Nova again, tucking himself in closely. Heart in his throat, he murmurs quietly enough that only Nova should hear. "I think I want to stay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Remind me to find pictures of aye-ayes for you," 'Chelle declares "Especially baby aye-ayes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods slightly, a tiny movement against Zev's head. (And he'll make sure they can stay.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev sinks his head back into Nova's neck, feeling content. No almost, no maybe. Just...content.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan joins 'Chelle in front of the couch, snuggling against her and humming contently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren retakes his seat, and leans his head back against the back of the chair, closing his eyes, obviously equally content.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the day passes quietly, 'Chelle and Lan bickering on the floor in front of the couch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren gets them all into the kitchen for dinner again, and after dinner there's time for a few more documentaries before Aaren shepherds them all off to bed like the responsible dad he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev collects the bags of clothes before heading into their room. "Now to see what Lan thinks does look good on me," Zev says with a grin. He heads to the bed and upends a bag on it.

"I think this bag is yours," Zev says, holding up a shirt that does look too small for him. Not by much, anymore, but definitely Nova's. He empties the other bag onto the floor, pawing through the items.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova takes the bag, but doesn't empty it. He can tell the clothes will be loose fitting, comfortable, and they're dark colours, things that would be less obvious.

Zev's bag is more mixed, still comfortable looking, but there's bright colours in amongst the darker ones.

Permalink Mark Unread

He holds up a burnt orange shirt to show Nova. "Do you think they're hinting something?" He grins.

He starts organising the clothes by type, putting them aside. "It's going to be nice to have clean clothes more often," he says softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Yeah, I guess," he agrees quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev stands up and turns to face Nova. He pulls him into his arms. "It's okay. I know, they're- they're different." He laughs a little. "I keep thinking they're going to ask me to go and kill someone. But they won't."

He presses his face into Nova's head. "They won't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No," Nova agrees, sounding a little more certain. (He was going to make sure that never happened again.) "Don't seem like the kind." (That too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"They really don't." Zev steps away from Nova for a moment, stretching. He does his best to cover up a yawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleep?" Nova suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Mmmmm.” Zev looks down at the clean clothes. “I think I’ll put something fresh on first. I’ll be just a minute.”

He grabs a t-shirt and sweatpants, disappearing inside the bathroom, changing fast. He’s back out in just a moment, Lan’s clothes bundled in his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's changed while he was in the bathroom, and is sat cross-legged on the bed, looking a little less entirely lost now that he's wearing clothes that don't hang off him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like they got both our sizes right. Shockingly enough," Zev says. The t-shirt is slightly too big, but once he's not stick thin he imagines it will fit well. He drops Lan's clothes, and sub consciously starts rubbing his arms. They're covered in old scars and more recent bruises, not usually something he would care about, but it's been a long time since he wasn't wearing long sleeves.

He shakes off that thought and joins Nova on the bed. "Feel a little better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "Yeah. You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Much. Might actually start to feel human. Isn't that a strange thought."

He takes the moment to grab Nova's hand, and wriggle under the covers. "Maybe we should take them up on that zoo offer. Might be nice to see how the other side lives."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods slowly. "Yeah, might be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles sleepily. He tucks his hand onto Nova's neck, stroking the skin with his thumb. "That sounds like a decision, mi vida." He sounds (and feels) happy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," he agrees quietly. "Guess- Guess it is. Should sleep," he repeats.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmmmm...can't...can't argue with that," mumbles Zev.

His eyes close, and soon after that, he's asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays awake, until he's sure Zev's asleep, and then slides out of bed, and quietly leaves the room. He'd not heard Aaren come upstairs yet, and he needs to make sure that they don't ask Zev for anything to repay this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure enough, Aaren's in the kitchen, finishing tidying. He looks up when Nova enters.

"Are you okay?" he asks, "Did you need something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He lowers his eyes. "I- no, sir. I just- wanted to- repay you."

He steps a little closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sweetheart, I've already told you, I don't-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's not really listening to what Aaren says, stepping closer again and sliding to his knees, reaching for Aaren's belt.

"I can make you feel good, sir," he promises. "You- you don't have to ask Zev to- I'll be good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren steps back sharply before Nova's hands can touch him. "Nova, no," he says, abrupt and forceful, regretting it immediately when Nova flinches. "You don't have to-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"P-please, sir. I- we need to- need to earn our keep. And Zev doesn't- want to do that any more, and- and I don't mind. Really, m'used to it. Please let me-"

He's desperate and resigned and-

Permalink Mark Unread

-That's not happening.

"It's okay," Aaren says (it's really not). "I- stay here."

He hurries up the stairs and knocks on Nova and Zev's door. (He swears to god, if Zev had sent Nova down to do this-)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev opens his eyes blearily. It feels like...seconds since he closed his eyes. Why does his hand feel so cold? What's that noise?

When his brain catches up, he realises he's alone. He sits up abruptly, looking over to the bathroom. There's no light under the door, and he can't hear anyone inside it.

His heart-rate skyrockets. Nova wouldn't- he- they're safe here, Aaren and 'Chelle haven't asked for-

God, the clothes. The...fuck, why didn't Zev think? Nova would never believe something was for free-

Suddenly, Zev feels nauseous, as well as panicked, desperate- He rips the covers off the bed and runs straight to the door, tearing it open.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nova's downstairs," Aaren says without preamble, trying to keep his voice calm. He can see the panic in Zev, knows without a doubt that he didn't intend for Nova to do this. "You should go and bring him back to bed. And please tell him I'm not angry, but that I never want him to offer to pay me back again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He-" Zev's entire body goes cold. His hands start shaking. He wonders if he's truly here, or if he's back in the cult, watching as Nova's hands are forced to that man's belt and-

"I'll make sure." His voice doesn't even sound like his own. He goes to pass Aaren, shaking so hard it's a surprise to even him he's still standing.

Permalink Mark Unread

He stops him with a gentle hand on his shoulder, pulling him into a quick hug. "This isn't your fault, Zev," he states seriously, before stepping back, and heading into his room at the end of the landing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev doesn't hug back. He's not sure he even remembers how at this point.

That isn't true, he tries to reply to Aaren, but words aren't coming now either. If it was, this wouldn't be happening. Nova wouldn't-
Zev's words choke on a sob in real life.

Once Aaren is gone, Zev makes his very shaky way down the stairs, gripping to the bannister almost hard enough to break something. He wishes it would. He wishes he could break.

He can see Nova in the kitchen. He walks over to him. "Come back upstairs. Please." Words are back, that's a good start but...why is his neck wet? Why-

...when did he start crying?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's curled up, knees pulled up to his chest, sobbing into them. He flinches slightly at Zev's voice. "M'sorry," he manages miserably. "I just- m'sorry." (What if he'd messed this up? What if they didn't get to stay? Zev wanted to stay.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not your fault." Zev's voice is a devastated whisper.

He bends down, holding out a hand. "Please come back upstairs."

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches slightly when the hand comes into his vision, but it's habit more than fear, and he hesitantly reaches for Zev's hand, although he stops just short of actually taking it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's never done that before. Nova's never been...afraid of him before.

Zev loses control of his legs, and just drops to his knees. He hears the crack of them on the tile. It doesn't feel real.

His hand stays up though, desperate as he is to just...get Nova away. Get him out- no, wait, he is out. He's out. They're safe...aren't they?

Isn't he?

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'sorry," Nova repeats, miserable again. "I- you didn't want to have to. And- and I don't mind-" (It sounds like something he's been told so often he believes it.) "-m'just m'a- I need it, and need to-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gives up on space. He gives up on staying calm, if he ever thought that.

He pulls himself to Nova, and just envelops him, tucking the ball he's made himself into Zev's chest. He's still crying, Nova's still crying. He doesn't know if either of them can stop at this point, but he's not letting that deter him from wrapping every part of himself around Nova.

"I never- I never thought he'd ask me to kill someone, Nova. I never thought he'd ask...this of you. Never. I-"

I don't understand why you thought you-

Oh, no. That's not true at all. Zev knew exactly why.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shudders against Zev and-

And clings to him, to the front of his shirt.

"M'sorry," he repeats. "I- He's gonna-" (Be mad, throw them out-)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gasps for air. Sorry? Sorry for what? That he had this beaten into him every day of his life so that he thinks this was normal? The way whenever Zev walks into a room he assesses exits? Possible weapons? How best to kill someone?

"No! No, Nova, no one is going to do anything. Aaren cares about you, and not because he has to or because he expects anything from you!" He's angry. He wants to control it, he wants to be soft for Nova, but sometimes it's- it's so hard. "Neither of us expect anything except for you to let us care for you!"

Zev pulls away so he can cup Nova's face. He doesn't blame him for looking terrified. "Nova, I've loved you this whole time and not once, not once ever, have I ever expected anything from you but to let me keep you safe. I don't want anything from you like that! I want you to know that I love you, without conditions and for no reason other than you're the best part of my life and I would die to protect that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's shaking, doesn't know how to respond to that. Doesn't know how it can be real.

He sobs, leaning into Zev's hands. He can't say it back, he can't, he doesn't know how to. "M'not worth it," he mumbles instead. "I- you- you're too- shouldn't put yourself at- at risk."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev presses his lips between Nova's brows, and then tucks Nova back against his body. "You are my heart, my life and my soul. I am nothing without you."

Please don't go.

Permalink Mark Unread

From the way Nova's clinging to him, he's not going anywhere.

He doesn't have pretty words to respond to that, doesn't know how to make Zev understand what he feels-

So he just clings to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes Zev a very long time to even consider pulling away. The idea makes him physically ill, and makes his breath stop in his lungs.

What finally gets him moving, is Nova cannot be comfortable on the tiles. It's colder down here than in their room. So he loosens his arms, but keeps in contact with Nova as much as he can.

"Come back upstairs with me," he says, caught between asking and telling.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods wearily. That's- he's being told, he can do that. That's easy. He's still going to need Zev to lead him. Moving seems- difficult.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's difficult for Zev too, but the list of things he wouldn't do for Nova is incredibly short. He wraps his arm around Nova's waist, lifting him gently. His other hand remains tightly woven with Nova's. Partially for both of their comfort and partially because there is a fear in Zev's heart that if he lets go, Nova will disappear.

Slowly he eases them both up the stairs, stopping every few stairs to check on Nova and readjust his hold.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's managing, although he looks like it's sheer force of will that's keeping him on his feet at this point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev takes on more of Nova's weight, half carrying him until they get into their room. He then helps Nova to manoeuvre across the room and onto the bed. He carefully helps him under the covers, tucks him in as best he can, before sliding in behind him.

He gathers Nova to him, wrapping an arm around his chest, the other under the pillow Nova's lying on.

He doubts sleep is an option for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's not sure he's going to be able to sleep either, but he cuddles closer to Zev, clinging again.

"M'sorry," he says again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's run out of words. He shakes his head against the back of Nova's.

He tightens his hold on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

-He doesn't apologise again. Presses closer.

He closes his eyes, but can't sleep. Too worried about repercussions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev starts crying again a few hours later. He manages to keep from sobbing, but the shaking is hard to hide.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shifts around so he can wrap his arms around Zev in turn, wanting to help somehow. When all he's been doing before is making Zev hurt more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nearly doesn't let it happen. Nearly just holds Nova in place so that Zev can pretend he's keeping it secret. But just last night (god, it felt like years ago), Zev had said he would let Nova share his burdens. We help each other.

So Zev tucks his head into Nova's shoulder, tucking himself against the boy he loves and just cries.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Nova hugs him close, presses his lips against Zev's hair, not quite a kiss but-

(He loves Zev, as much as he knows how to, and maybe a little bit more...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev wants to take that almost-kiss as comfort, so he does. Even as a pit settles in his stomach, making him think that maybe Nova was just 'repaying' him. He tries to shut that voice out, and buries himself deeper and closer to Nova.

The voice continues to taunt him, but Zev doesn't move away. He can't.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Except he'd never seen Nova do anything like this. Nothing this soft. It's always been hard and brutal and violent.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually they'll hear the others moving around, Aaren shepherding Lan and 'Chelle downstairs before they can knock on Zev and Nova's door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's tears have slowed, but his breathing is still wildly uneven, and his grip on Nova has not slackened in the least, even as his arms shake with the effort.

If he hears the other occupants of the house, he doesn't react.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hears, and goes rigid until they're down the stairs, and there's no immediate risk of them being thrown out. Then he-

He doesn't quite relax, but almost does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, don't-" Zev says, brokenly, when Nova tenses.

(Don'tgodon'tleavemepleaseiknowimnotdoingthisrightim-)

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-what? Why? I-you don't- there's nothing-" (For you to apologise for.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know I'm not doing this right, I know you need better than me, but I'm trying, I am, I just want to keep you safe and I-"

Gasping breath, like he's forgotten how to breathe normally. "I keep fucking it up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- no. No. You- you do! Keep me safe! It's- it's not you. You don't- aren't fucking- up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We wouldn't've had to leave the shelter if it weren't for me. You wouldn't have slept on the streets for weeks with nothing to keep you warm but your fire- you wouldn't have gone out that ni-"

He couldn't finish the sentence. He couldn't even think the words because then he'd remember the image of Nova held against the wall and-

He could feel bile in his throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-but. You. You stopped- them. Got me. Away. And- it-it's not your fault I- I keep. Trying to sleep with people. I- you- you know I-" (That I want it. That I need to. That I owe.)

Permalink Mark Unread

How does he make him see that he doesn't? He sees the fear in Nova's face even considering it, sees the light in his eyes die, the resignation on his face like a dead man walking.

"I don't know that. I never will. I refuse it. I reject it. You don't want it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But- they always-"

He's been told it too often, never been told anything different, doesn't know how to accept it.

(Is scared to listen to the part of him that hateshateshates what they told him he wanted.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"They wanted you that way." Fury. "They liked you that way." Devastation.

"They thought I would relish my chance at a 'reward'." Zev makes a strangled noise, like an aborted laugh. "I thought it meant I was allowed to be near you, for once. Didn't know it...if I knew, I would've..."

He's said this before. If he knew, scratch that, if he had an idea that it was going on, he would've taken Nova from there right then. Why did he let himself believe for so long?

Permalink Mark Unread

He ducks his head into Zev's chest. "I- I didn't- want you to. Think. Less of me. You were. Strong. And I-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've always been stronger."

Think less of him? As if there was ever a time Zev ever felt like Nova didn't hang the stars in the sky?

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "Still you who got us out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only regret was not killing more of them on the way out. Showing off the skills they gave me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You- I-" Nova shrugs. He's tired, and things don't make sense, and he wants to pretend he hadn't upset Zev and-

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev unclings one hand from Nova’s back to rest against his neck. He gently strokes along Nova’s jaw with his thumb, trying to slow his own shaking.

“Not your fault. None of this is your fault.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"-wasn't yours either."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, it is. If he took care of Nova the way he was supposed to, he wouldn’t feel like this.

But he doesn’t want to argue. He wants to stop crying for a bit. So he just cups the back of Nova’s head to bring their foreheads together, and closes his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shuffles closer. Hugs him a bit tighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. That’s good.

Because Zev needs Nova right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're left in peace for half an hour before there's a quiet tap on the door. "Breakfast outside if you want it," 'Chelle calls softly, and can be heard going straight back down the stairs.

The idea of food makes Zev’s stomach turn. He can’t even imagine eating right now. Nova might need it though.

When he goes to sit up, he finds it a lot harder than it should be. His arms don’t want to detach from Nova and his knees just don’t function at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova sits up with him. He's not sure he can eat. But-

But he thinks he'll worry Zev more if he doesn't. He isn't inclined to get off the bed though.

Permalink Mark Unread

He usually makes the decisions for them. Mostly because he didn’t want Nova to feel pressured, he’d dealt with enough of that.

But right now, if the decision isn’t ‘stay here until the world hurts less’, he doesn’t want to make it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Except Zev needs to eat as well.

Nova slides off the bed, and cautiously retrieves the tray from the otherwise empty landing.

It's nothing major, just two plates of buttered toast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Panic flares in Zev as Nova lets him go, and immediately he tried to grab at him, to pull him back, terrified he was going for good.

Nova is quick though, and soon the door was closed and he has toast in his hands, Zev takes a few deep, shaky breaths.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova sits back on the bed, shoulder not quite brushing against Zev's, and insistently holds the tray out towards him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is quick to make that shoulder actually touch.

"I don't know if I can eat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not sure I can either."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Nova. He can't ask him to eat when he himself won't. He wants to. Nova's skin and bone as it is.

But he won't. Not today.

Instead he just leans his head on Nova's shoulder. "Maybe we'll try again later."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hums quietly, sets the tray on the nightstand and cautiously wraps an arm around Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev curls into the embrace, wrapping an arm around Nova's waist in return.

Permalink Mark Unread

He starts humming quietly, a random tune he'd heard...somewhere, he's not sure where, thumb absently stroking Zev's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev recognises it. He doesn't know what it's called, or who it's by, or where he knows it from, but he knows it.

He sings the words along to Nova's soft humming.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova just keeps humming, snuggled up to Zev, hoping that Zev'll fall asleep. (He won't leave this time, this time he'll stay.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“...this time, I’ll hold on through...”

Zev can’t keep his eyes open any longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Good. Nova continues humming, hoping that Zev will get a few hours sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

It’s fitful, and sometimes his eyes flutter like he’s going to open them, but he does stay asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually there's another quiet tap on the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev jolts awake, his heart already thumping wildly in the memory of last night.

He feels Nova’s arms around him, and tries to calm himself, taking in deep breaths.

Permalink Mark Unread

"M-m'here," Nova murmurs, feeling guilt that he's the reason Zev's so panicked.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's nearly lunchtime," Aaren calls softly. "And if you're up for it, I'd like to have a quick word with you somewhere that isn't your room."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev guesses what's he's going to talk about, and he thinks it's better coming from Aaren first. Then maybe Zev can reinforce it.

"We should," he says into Nova's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be in the living room."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods, silently, starts shifting so they can get off the bed. He's reluctant, doesn't want to hear Aaren say they have to leave but-

(But he hadn't thrown them straight out, had let them stay the night, had given them food, even if they hadn't eaten it...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev stands (shakily), and takes a moment to gently kiss Nova's temple. "Doesn't matter what happens next. We're staying together."

He takes Nova's hand and leads him to the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays close to Zev as they make their way down the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren looks up from the book he's reading as they step into the living room. "Thank you," he says. "I didn't want to have this conversation in your space."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not sure what that means, but he nods.

He sits down on the sofa, keeping Nova close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes himself as small as he can beside Zev.

"I- m-m'sorry, sir," he mumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not angry, Nova," Aaren says calmly, setting the book to the side. "And you have nothing to apologise for. I'm sorry that I in any way made you think you owed me anything. I guess I haven't been clear enough that I don't expect repayment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Either was I."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That isn't your job, Zev," Aaren says seriously. "I should have expected either or both of you to feel like you owed me for this. I'm going to state unequivocally: you do not. You should never have thought you did. I've never asked Lan and 'Chelle to do more than a handful of chores to help me keep the house tidy, and I'll never ask anything more of them."

Pause. "Nova, if anyone asks you to do that, and you don't want to, you are entirely within your right to say no. And you shouldn't offer it to anyone just because you think you owe them something. You will never, ever owe anyone that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ever," Zev reiterates, close to Nova's ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"B-but I don't have- any other way to- to earn my keep?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to earn your keep, Nova," Aaren says firmly. "No child should ever be asked to earn their keep. You both have a right to have a safe place, where you have enough to eat, clothes that are warm enough, and that fit, and space that's your own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyone who asks that in exchange for food deserves to be set alight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev isn't wrong. But it's never going to happen again. I promise. You both have a safe place here as long as you need it. And if you'd rather stay somewhere else, we'll help you find somewhere equally safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

-he doesn't know how to respond to that. Isn't entirely sure what 'safe' is. (It's Zev.)

He's shaking against Zev's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev holds him close, trying to soothe the shaking. It was only a few hours ago that Zev was shaking the same, and Nova calmed him.

"I want to stay, but only if Nova feels safe. That's all I've wanted."

Permalink Mark Unread

-how can he say no? Zev wants to stay, and he wants to stay with Zev and-

He stays tucked close against Zev's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're more than welcome," Aaren assures. "Take time to think about it, Nova."

Pauses. "Do you think you boys are up to something to eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have time, mi alma. We've never had that before." He presses a kiss to Nova's hair.

He shakes his head at Aaren. He knows it's dangerous. He knows that if he doesn't eat Nova won't either, but the idea of food is still...wrong.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, well. Kitchen's open. Third cupboard on the top has crackers and stuff in it. Want to see if we can find any more ocelot kittens?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He should say something funny here. Or maybe agree, with big sparkling eyes.

Instead he curls around Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova curls into Zev, still trying to make himself small and unnoticeable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite the lack of overwhelming agreement, Aaren turns the TV on, and manages to find a documentary about a monkey sanctuary that seems pretty cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev takes to muttering a comforting stream in Spanish. The words sound better in his native tongue, English doesn't carry the warmth he wants to infuse Nova with.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's tired. He's not been sleeping well-

With Zev murmuring to him, he drifts off against him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tuck's Nova's head into his neck, gently cupping his face. He keeps up the soft words, hoping they comfort him like Nova's humming did.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren waits until he's sure Nova's in a fairly deep sleep.

"Zev?" he says quietly. "Can I have a quick word with you just outside?"

He nods to the open door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-" He does. He does want to speak with Aaren...but Nova is so peaceful...

He does his best to gently lower Nova onto the sofa as he moves out from under him. He keeps up the steady stream of words as he does. Once he's sure Nova is comfortable, he grabs a blanket and tucks it around him.

He then heads to the door, keeping on eye on Nova the entire time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova barely stirs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren quietly heads out into the hall, perches himself on the stairs.

"We need to- discuss how to keep you two safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do anything, I don't care what. I'll- I'll-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev, what I just said to Nova applies to you as well. I do not, and will never expect any form of repayment for this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not about that, it's- God. Aaren, I just want him to feel safe. And if I can't do that-"

Zev has to cut himself off. His voice sounds like broken glass.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sweetheart-" Aaren stops, holds his arms out in mute offer. "You do. I know you probably can't see it. I'm nor sure he does. But he does feel safe with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev steps eagerly, greedily, into Aaren's arms. He hugs himself as close to Aaren as physics will allow.

"I want him to know that. I want him to see that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren holds him tightly, strokes the back of his head. "He just needs time, Zev. This is new to both of you. He'll get there. You both will." Pauses. "That's part of what I wanted to talk to you about. I've got an older brother. He's a therapist, I think it might do both of you some good to talk to him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev pulls back. "Do...do you think he will help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think he won't harm. He- He specialises in PTSD. Has two kids of his own he adopted not that long ago, from a pretty rough situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If...if you think he'll help, then I think he should try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The other thing is the fact that we need to make sure that you and Nova can't be made to leave against your will. Which is going to involve a lawyer, and probably the police as well. But I need you to know that we will keep you safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

The mention of the police doesn't inspire Zev with confidence, but if it means keeping Nova safe-

"I want him to know he has a safe place. Where he doesn't have to-" He doesn't think he needs to elaborate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll make sure of it. Ange has a couple of friends who she thinks will help. I'll see if Steve's free - is tomorrow okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll...I'll talk to him about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." Aaren gives him a squeeze. "You're really both incredibly strong. And I'm glad you had each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...I just wish I could've done more. So that he wouldn't feel like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll let you in on a secret: I feel the same way about 'Chelle's mum. And I didn't even know her until Ange called me saying they needed someone shockproof to talk to her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have the same powers as 'Chelle?"

Zev sighs, the sound hopeless. "I won't ever regret getting him out. And I can say that I should've been more prepared, but from the second I knew there was only one choice. I just...maybe I shoul've-" He cuts himself off. He doesn't know what he 'should've' done. He has aimless, directionless regret and guilt just floating around his body like a virus.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm going to suggest you talk to Steve about this. He might be able to help you put things in perspective, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods. He doesn't look reassured, but he has to figure at this point anything would help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren pulls away slightly, rests his hand on the back of Zev's neck the same way he has a thousand times before for Lan or 'Chelle. (I'm here, I've got you, I won't let you fall.)

"It's okay if you don't believe me, but things will get better. It might not always seem like they are, but we're right beside you, okay? We can help if you need it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods again. He doesn't believe Aaren, but he trusts him. He's in a grey area, but willing to take a step out. For Nova.

He steps back into Aaren's arms for another hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he gets one, gentle, but firm.

"You should probably get back to Nova," Aaren suggests - not that the hug is loosening, but if Zev steps back, he'll find he can get out of the hold easily enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev closes his eyes, feeling greedy for the small interaction, but so grateful to Aaren for it.

He steps back after a moment. “Thank you. I’ll talk to Nova about speaking to Steve.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, Zev," Aaren says with a nod. "Any time."

Pause. "I'm gonna see if I have any chicken broth left in the freezer. Might be a bit easier on both of your stomachs."

Permalink Mark Unread

The mention of food doesn't make him taste bile, so he nods.

He goes back into the living room, sliding under Nova so his head is in Zev's lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova gives a sleepy mumble and nuzzles into Zev's knee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev threads a hand through Nova's hair, stroking gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova hums quietly, shifts slightly so he's pressed closer to Zev, head turning into Zev's hand slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev strokes a thumb along Nova's jaw, continuing to stroke his hair.

He's just hoping he helps, even a little, to keep Nova resting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he's fairly successful at that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren comes back in, an hour later, carrying a tray with three steaming bowls.

He looks between Zev and Nova. "We can reheat his when he wakes up," he says quietly, putting the tray down. "But I think he'd want you to eat." He holds one of the bowls out.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Thanks.” He takes a bowl, holding it carefully over Nova’s shoulder.

He eats very slowly, making sure each spoonful will settle in his stomach before the next one. He gets through maybe a quarter of the soup before he can’t eat anymore. He holds the bowl a little awkwardly, not wanting to shift Nova just so he can reach the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren's eaten a little faster, and moves one of the end tables so that it's in easier reach, takes the bowl off Zev, and puts it down on that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stirs, still sleepy, but starting to wake up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev, now his hands are free, goes back to stroking Nova’s hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm?" Nova hums.

Permalink Mark Unread

“There’s soup if you’re hungry, mi alma.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He isn't, not really. (Not any more than he normally is, than he's used to.)

But Zev'll worry if he doesn't eat. He-

He pushes himself upright, a little reluctantly, wondering when his head ended up in Zev's lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev lets him sit up. Once’s he’s settled, Zev hands him a bowl.

He lies down, his head in Nova’s lap. Maybe the swapped position will make Nova laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't quite get a laugh, but it gets a tiny smile, and the momentary brushing of Nova's hand over his hair before he makes himself eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

He’ll take that.

He cuddles into Nova, wrapping a hand under his knee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova doesn't manage to eat much more than Zev, tries to force himself to keep eating-

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you've had enough, it's okay," Aaren says. "You can make yourself ill eating too much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev sits up, ready to take the bowl from Nova if he has to.

“Don’t force yourself if you don’t want it.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes a quiet, lost sound. It's not that he doesn't want it, it's that he can't and-

He stares at the bowl in his hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev drops his head onto Nova’s shoulder, one hand sliding on top of his.

“It’s okay. It’s okay.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be there later if you want it, or there'll be something else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'sorry," Nova mumbles, half moving to set the bowl aside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is nothing to be sorry for."

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Nova has a hand free, Zev takes it, tangles their fingers and brings them to his chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova leans into him, not sure what to do now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll leave you two in peace," Aaren says, with a careful look to Zev, a question about whether he'll talk to Nova about what they discussed. "Give me a yell if you want those bowls reheated," he offers, taking his own bowl and leaving the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Aaren is gone, Zev sits up so he can look in Nova’s eyes.

“Aaren wants us to talk to someone. He thinks it will help. I think it will help.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova does his best to keep the eye-contact, but he's not used to it, and it's uncomfortable, even with Zev, and his eyes dart away, and then back. "I- if- if you think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want it to be your decision too. I know it's harder." Zev wraps his other hand around their joined ones, hugging it tightly. "I just want you to see that you're not bad. There's nothing bad or wrong about you."

Permalink Mark Unread

-he can't make this decision, he doesn't know how to. But Zev wants him to-

But he doesn't know how to. And-

And he is bad, isn't he? They wouldn't have always been telling him that if he wasn't-

"I- if you think it'll help?" he says, and it's not, perhaps, as certain as people might like, but it's as close to certain as he's going to be capable of.

Permalink Mark Unread

He quotes Aaren. "I don't think it will hurt."

He gently pulls Nova's head to his, to press his lips to his temple. "I think we've hurt enough."

...does he say te amo? I love you? Does he pretend he never said it at all?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay," Nova agrees, pressing closer to Zev, leaning a little into the touch.

(He still doesn't know how to say how he feels about Zev. Wishes Zev would say something so he can respond...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck it.

“I love you.” He nuzzles his head to Nova’s.

Permalink Mark Unread

He clings a little tighter, and there's that small smile again and-

"You too," he manages.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You don’t have to say that.”

His desperate heart wishes he meant it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tucks himself down a little, tries to figure out the words to get Zev to believe him.

"I- but I- I do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Nova, please.”

Don’t. I will love you no matter what, but don’t tell me you love me now.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he doesn't understand why Zev doesn't want him to say it back. Makes that lost sound again. Because Zev deserves love so much more than Nova does and-

Permalink Mark Unread

He wants him to mean it. He wants it so badly.

“I only want you to say it if you meant it.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"-but I do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Nova-“

Stop. You don’t have to appease me.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova tries to press himself closer, tries to make Zev understand. Because he doesn't know the words to convince him. "I do," he repeats stubbornly, because he doesn't know what else to say.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles. He accepts it. For whatever it means to Nova.

“I love you too.”

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets what is probably the largest smile Zev has ever seen out of Nova, and Nova shuffles, so he's clinging a little less desperately, but still snuggled close to Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev cuddles into Nova, his heart feeling a little more full, even though there was no reason for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans contently against Zev's side. (He feels warm, in a way he so rarely does.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gathers as much of Nova into his arms as he could. He loves this boy and would hold him throughout anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few hours later, the front door opens, and 'Chelle and Lan can be heard talking as they doubtless take off jackets and shoes.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle pads into the living room, yawning, and pushing her hair out of her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nearly doesn’t notice, tucked as he is into Nova, but the flash of blue catches his attention.

“Wasn’t...wasn’t your hair green?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. Got bored of it. Teo griped about me turning his shower blue, but I fixed his bike for him, he owed me."

Permalink Mark Unread

“It looks lovely.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you!" she grins. "You two had an alright day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They didn't have you and Teo arguing statistical probability over Teo's ludicrous skill at bowling," Lan says and he appears, munching on something.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We-“ ...admitted things to each other? Even though some were not true?

“We had an interesting day, for sure. Yours sounds much more fun.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll take you bowling sometime," Lan declares breezily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You realise that Sod's law declares they're gonna be better than you right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan strikes a dramatic pose. "I am offended you think the only reason I want to introduce them to such a fun pastime is that I may actually beat someone."

Beat, wink at Zev and Nova. "She's probably not wrong that you'll be better than me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev shrugs. “Only experience can tell.”

He seems half ready to dive into the conversation, but he’s keeping himself close to Nova, physically and emotionally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww. 'Chelle restrains her squeaking by some miracle. "Dad didn't happen to mention what he was making for dinner, did he?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad hasn't made up his mind. And is willing to take requests."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev catches sight of his and Nova’s half-full soup bowls, and does not offer suggestions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan chooses that moment to scoop up both bowls and head for the kitchen. "Your cream-free carbonara?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-has possibilities. Anyone got a type of pasta they'd prefer? Got shells, tubes or strands?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Whatever’s easiest.” Zev smile is small.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shells!" 'Chelle declares.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Predictable," Lan accuses her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova giggles quietly into Zev's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at that, and noses into Nova’s hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dinner in front of the TV? I'll go get started on it."

And leaves the room to do so.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What're we watching then?" Lan asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

“...we were watching something?” He lifts his head away from Nova to look at the screen. He has no idea what was happening, but there were a great number of animals on the screen.

“No idea. I’ve been distracted.” He drops his head back onto Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Any objections to The Lorax?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lor-ax?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Orange moustached peanut."

Permalink Mark Unread

""You callin' me a peanut, huh?"" 'Chelle quotes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking dogs, peanuts with moustaches..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Singing animals," 'Chelle declares. "A surprisingly adept assessment of the problem with over-industrialisation. People selling air..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hard to sell something as a commodity when you cannot keep it for yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. We're watching this. Then you'll understand!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh. You've done it now. 'Chelle got stub~born."

Permalink Mark Unread

This is strange, and warm, and cuddled against Zev, it's safe, and Nova hums quietly against Zev's neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev laughs at Lan and 'Chelle's easy banter, but is easily distracted by Nova. Which, really, is not news to him.

"Oh no, what ever shall I do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Watch The Lorax and enjoy it!" 'Chelle states breezily, already setting that up. She's dropped down in front of the sofa, leaning her head back against Zev's legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

He squeezes his legs against her shoulders, smiling fondly at her. He likes easy affection. He rapidly got used to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he's going to get a lot of it, because that's just who these guys are.

'Chelle sets up the Lorax, ready to go. "I'll wait for dinner. Dad likes this movie."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren sticks his head back into the room at that point. "Lan, excellent, you're still on your feet. You can come help me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! How's that fair?" He's still heading towards the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova half starts to offer to help instead-

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev wraps his arm around him a little tighter.

"Not yet. We'll get there," he soothes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan waves dismissively. "I got this. I'm good at this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just don't let him try to chop anything," 'Chelle whispers conspiratorially. "He'll try to slice his own fingers off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vegetables are well-known for fighting back. Makes knife work a little more difficult."

He winks roguishly at Lan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See!" Lan says grandly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'mon. There's no vegetables to attack you now. Just bowls that need carrying."

Aaren shepherds Lan out of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

They return fairly quickly, distributing bowls to everyone and taking their own seats.

Nova and Zev's portions are slightly smaller.

"There's extra in the pan if you're still hungry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When isn't there extra? Dad doesn't know how to cook for less than about twenty."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev isn't hungry, but he can't deny how good it smells. He tries a couple of experimental bits, after regretfully unwinding himself from Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's good, if there's an appetite to be found, this food will probably wake it up.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle hits play when they're all settled with their food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova does his best to eat. (He really doesn't want to worry Zev.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev sees Nova trying, and drops his head onto his shoulder briefly, trying to be encouraging.

He doesn’t manage to eat much, but what he does eat is wonderful.

The movie, on the other hand, gets almost a series of scoffs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey," 'Chelle pokes his knee playfully. "Don't knock Seuss. It's an accessible platform."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev pokes her back, but quiets his scoffing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head back so she's looking at him, upside down. "But by all means, continue your critique, I do enjoy defending this."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Good, because I have some thoughts about the Onceler-“

The thoughts are many, and none of them praise.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Yeah. He's an idiot. That's kinda the point."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan is distracted, frowning at his phone. "Dad, is there a reason the Shrimp is texting me with a string of emojis?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Steve's coming over for breakfast tomorrow. I guess he's bringing Ant and Ira with him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He wraps his arm back around Nova, hoping he’s not too frightened by how quickly that happened.

“Who’re Ant and Ira?”

Permalink Mark Unread

-he has Zev. Zev'll look after him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mentioned them to you. The two kids Steve took in? Ira's just turned eighteen, Ant's just about to turn fifteen."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Sure.”

He tucks his head close to Nova’s. “I’ll be with you the whole time. You can tell me if you feel uncomfortable.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ant's adorable. Ira's...Ira. Do we have enough chairs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"When was the last time you saw Ira use a chair?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods against Zev, obviously relieved.

Permalink Mark Unread

“All of you are going to sit in on this?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just breakfast," Aaren says with a grin. "Chances are Steve's gonna banish me from my kitchen once that's done."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uncle Steve's the only person who can get away with that!"

“Truly an unheard of phenomenon.”

Zev’s grin fades a little, but doesn’t seem less happy. Just softer. “Thank you, again, for this.”

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle grins and reaches over one shoulder to squeeze his knee.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome," Aaren says. "Even if I don't think you have anything to thank us for."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev disagrees. If Aaren hadn’t taken them in, hadn’t been so patient- it’s a hard train of thought to follow. Especially considering they had been sleeping on the streets with nothing to their name. Hard to imagine that story ending happily.

“Nevertheless, it is thanks you’re getting. You are a good man. I’m sorry I doubted you.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You had no reason to trust me, and every reason to doubt me. I'm glad I could prove that not everyone's awful."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Definitely not the people in this room.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, love you too," 'Chelle says fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

(He has a moment where he has a sharp feeling of jealousy. Not sure what of.

Of the fact that 'Chelle's obviously so much better than he is?

Of the fact that she can say that so easily?)

Still. He smiles. Zev deserves to be loved.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev laughs, trying to hide the happy tears that sprang into his eyes. He wipes at them ineffectually and nudges ‘Chelle with his foot. “Stop it. I can only have a heart so big.”

He looks at Nova, grins back at his smile, and kisses him gently behind his ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

-tiny, startled, not at all disapproving squeak.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find that hearts are much like the universe: constantly expanding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-have we hit the point of philosophy of human emotions?" Aaren teases gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

“That may be so, but you’ll upset your dad if you make me all heart and no stomach.”

Nova’s shoulder is a very good place for his head to be.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite! There must always be room for stomach!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're biased, Dad," Lan grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

“He has every right to be,” Zev laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Zev, nice to have some back-up against these two reprobates." (There's no heat in his words.)

"Okay, this old man is heading to bed, and you guys might want to as well, you've got school tomorrow, 'Chelle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably a good idea," he says to Nova.

He then tries to hug 'Chelle with his legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find arms are more conducive to hugs," 'Chelle notes, hugging his legs anyway. "But eight out of ten for the attempt."

Permalink Mark Unread

-yeah. Sleep sounds appealing. He nods tiredly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"True. But where's the challenge?" He says to 'Chelle, but lets her free from the prison of his legs.

He sees Nova's yawn, and cuddles him. "All right. Upstairs with us both then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyone want a hug before bed?" Aaren asks, getting to his feet and opening his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dumb question," 'Chelle says immediately hugging him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lan crowds around 'Chelle to join that hug, before the two of them head up the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Open offer?" Aaren says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nudges Nova gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

...who doesn't seem to have an easy answer to that, although he does get to his feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev stands with him, hand between his shoulders to try and comfort him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans a little into the touch.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your choice," Aaren reassures. "Zev, would you like a quick hug? Five seconds? Apparently that's the optimum time for a hug according to Lan, after that it apparently becomes a cuddle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Longer than five second cuddle it is then,” Zev says with a laugh. He takes Nova’s hand just to keep contact with him, and then happily steps into Aaren’s arms, hugging him back one handed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren squeezes him gently with one arm, keeps the other arm free-

Permalink Mark Unread

And is rewarded by Nova stepping close enough to be hugged, although he's pressed closer to Zev than Aaren.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s laugh is muffled by Aaren’s shoulder, and he pulls Nova closer to cling to him too.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a little while, Aaren squeezes them both gently again. "As lovely as this is, you should both get some sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

“A sound plan.”

Zev pulls away, smiling. He gathers Nova in his arms to lead him upstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleep well," Aaren says with an encouraging smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova leans a little heavier against Zev and lets himself be lead, murmuring a good night to Aaren.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev takes Nova up into their room, shutting the door, but not locking it.

“I’ll just shower quickly. Be right back.” He kisses Nova’s temple and heads into the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova nods, and curls up on the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev showers quickly, but also enjoying the warmth. He towels off and changes, making sure he’s fully covered before he emerges from the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's cross-legged on the bed now, flames playing between his hands. He looks up at Zev, half starts to apologise-

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is shocked, just for a moment. Nova usually only made himself warmer, never produced actual flame, but this-

Zev grins. He kneels by the bed, staring in wonder. “Beautiful,” He says on a breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova smiles shyly. "Mhmm," he agrees, content. Then slowly persuades the flames to quiet and die. (They did need to sleep.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“Will you do that again?”

Permalink Mark Unread

He ducks his head shyly. "I- if you- want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“I think it’s beautiful.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's skin flushes, and he shrugs one shoulder. "Should sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should, that's not wrong." Zev doesn't want to stop the fireshow, but he's gotten better at telling himself and Nova to sleep.

He gets into bed, under the covers, holding out his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's a little less hesitant here, with the encouragement, and the words they've shared, to cuddle up against Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev pulls him as close as physics will allow. He buries his nose in Nova's hair and pulls fhe covers over them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova cuddles close, resting his head in Zev's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev finds it easy to get to sleep after that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then he wakes, a few hours later, and yanks himself away from Nova.

He's horrified, disgust and hatred boiling through his blood like poison, and as he looks at Nova it intensifies so that he feels sick
He's going to be sick.

He gets off the bed as quickly and quietly as possible, stomach already trying to make him retch, and he stumbles across the bedroom to the bathroom, wrenching the door open, slamming the light on and shutting the door behind him. He collapses in front of the toilet, ripping the lid up and then-

It's mostly bile. It burns and hurts, but it's a fitting punishment. He tries to be quiet, but the coughing is hard to mask.

It feels like hours have passed once he stops, and he just breaths through it, waiting to see if it was over. He wipes tears from his eyes. They don't seem to stop coming. He moves to sit in the corner of the bathroom, trying to stop sobbing, trying to calm his breathing. And then, unbidden and unwelcome, images start burning in his brain of bare skin, heads titled back, someone's breath caught on a sigh-

"Fuck," Zev says, his voice breaking, as he punches the bathroom wall. Hard. It's a fitting act so he does it again. And again. And then he just doesn't stop until the tile beneath his fist breaks, and he notices the streaks of blood around it. He's probably broken a few knuckles. It doesn't matter.

He deserves it.

Permalink Mark Unread

-But then Nova's behind him, and touching him without any hesitation, trying to stop him hitting the wall. "Please, stop. Please. You're hurting yourself. Please. Stop."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev flinches away from Nova, curling in on himself. And isn't that ironic?

"You shouldn't come near me." His voice is shaking.

Permalink Mark Unread

-No. Nonono.

Nova flinches backwards, and his back hits the wall, and he slides down it, curling into a miserable ball.

"Sorry sorry sorry. M'sorry. Just please. Don't- I- you- you Can- hit me. If you need to? Just please don't-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...hit you? Hit you?" Zev feels like he might be sick again.

"Never. I could never. I'd rather die."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova tucks his head into his knees, hopinghopinghoping that's true. (Because he doesn't know what he'll do if Zev thinks he should be hit.)

But still...

"But- you were hurting yourself. Y'shouldn't. Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I-” hadn’t meant to? That wasn’t my intention? Nothing he thinks of is particularly encouraging or reassuring. And nothing is the truth.

“I’m sorry,” he manages. “I said I’d protect you. I didn’t know that meant from me too.”

He tightens his hand into a fist, gasping a little as something gives way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I- what? Why would you-? You don't-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't!

Zev stares at his hand. "...I wouldn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wouldn't," Nova repeats, certain. "See?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova doesn't know why Zev feels that way, so it's hard to take his reassurance.

But he sounds so certain-

"I don't want anything else from you. I don't. The way we are now - it's enough. I don't need anything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

-Nova's confusion is palpable.

"I- know?" (He does, he thinks, because Zev's never, even when they offered Nova to him, no, when they did that Zev had- Zev had protected him, and hadn't-)

(He's shaking harder.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev holds his broken hand to his body, and reaches out to Nova with the other.

(Part of him is worried this is still the dream, that if Nova were to touch him, he would- NO. He wouldn't)

Permalink Mark Unread

-Nova shuffles closer a little cautiously, managing to unwrap one of his hands from around his knees, but not quite managing to reach out for Zev, as much as he wants to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev leans across, bridging the space between them, to take Nova's hand.

Nothing more happens than just a near-overwhelming feeling of rightness

Zev's breath leaves him on a shudder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of the tension seeps out of Nova's shoulders.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a gentle tap on the door into their room. "You guys okay?" 'Chelle's voice is soft, but in the quiet of the rest of the house it carries.

Permalink Mark Unread

He almost tells 'Chelle everything is fine, so she doesn't worry. Send her back to bed.

But he looks at Nova. If right now things were reversed, Zev would want Nova bandaged up, feeling safe again. If it was Zev who found Nova, he wouldn't hesitate.

"No?" He calls out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," 'Chelle says. "M'coming in."

She slides into the room, and pads over to the bathroom, she looks from one of them, to the other, and then to the shattered tiles. "Yeah, Dad's choice of tiles in here made me want to break them as well. Want me to fix your knuckles up, Zev?"

Permalink Mark Unread

A laugh escapes, just the one, and it sounds terribly painful, but it was there.

He carefully shifts around so he's not curled into the corner, and props up a knee to rest his hand on it. "I just need a moment. I can fix it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me," she says. "I have two working hands," she wiggles her fingers. "And something tells me Nova would rather not let go of your hand, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

-Yeah, Nova has gone a bit more tense at the suggestion of Zev taking his hand away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tightens his hand in response. He's not too fond of the idea of letting go either.

He nods after a moment, feeling guilty for bringing 'Chelle into this. "I'm sorry. About the tile," he says instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got a saying in this family," 'Chelle says, pulling a a first aid kit out of the cabinet above the sink, and sitting down to one side of Zev. "Things are replaceable, people aren't. God knows, Dad saw enough people go through Aunt Ange's who wouldn't have stopped at a wall tile to hold that against you. Hell, Ira broke two beds before Uncle Steve and her compromised." As she speaks, she's taken Zev's hands, is checking there's no ceramic lodged into his skin, a set of tweezers in one hand ready to pluck any shards free.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She sounds interesting. Can't wait to meet her," Zev says, lips twitching in an attempted smile.

There doesn't seem to be anything lodged in the wound, but two of his knuckles are definitely broken.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Interesting' is a good word for her and Ant," 'Chelle agrees, fetching an antiseptic wipe. "This'll sting," she warns, before starting to clean his knuckles. "I don't have the full story, but I know that Uncle Steve got them off the streets, Ira was half feral at that point, they both were really, but Ira was...further gone, didn't want to let anyone near Ant. Took a lot of patience before Ira trusted Uncle Steve to help them. Still not entirely sure she fully trusts him, but she trusts him enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

It does sting, but Zev doesn't mind the pain. He barely felt it when his knuckles broke.

"I can understand that." He looks over at Nova. "She was protecting someone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Yeah. I expect you can..." 'Chelle pauses, before reaching for strapping tape. "I'm gonna text Drex, because I get the feeling you're gonna be bad at not using your hand," she says as she straps the fingers with the broken knuckles. "I know that when I hurt myself I'm dreadful at remembering to not use what I've hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes to speak, to tell her not to, too used to having to deal with his injuries himself.

But this wasn't them. Wasn't how things worked.

"Thank you. I...I can't promise it won't happen again though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova makes a quiet sound and his hand squeezes tighter briefly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I guess we'll just have to heal you again," 'Chelle says calmly, putting the supplies away. "Wanna hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shook his head. He did, he craved physical affection near constantly.

But he couldn't allow himself that. Not yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-is this because you don't think you deserve a hug? Because you're definitely wrong about that. And you look like you could use one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, no. I- I'm fine."

He can't help but look at Nova. He wants to hold him. He doesn't trust himself to.
He wants a hug from 'Chelle, but doesn't want Nova to think there's something wrong with his.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shuffles a little closer again. (He thinks he could use a hug, knows Zev could, doesn't know how to-)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing about hugs, you can get them from more than one person at a time," 'Chelle says. "And I think Nova wants one. You can hug him, and I can hug both of you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's body starts to tremble slightly. "I- I don't want to hurt him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Z-zev," Nova manages shakily, now almost-pressed against Zev's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You won't," 'Chelle says gently. "Not tonight. And never on purpose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...I don't want to. I didn't mean for him to know-"

Zev takes in a shuddering breath, trying to hold in tears. He's done with crying, he's done.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle shuffles around to wrap her arm around his shoulders, her other hand resting on his elbow, resting her head against the side of his, she isn't pulling him away from Nova', if anything, she's leaning him a bit more into Nova.

"It's okay," she says quietly. "We've got you, me and Nova. And Dad and Lan. It's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova tucks himself closer against Zev, risking shifting so he can wrap his spare arm around Zev's stomach.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev manages to hold it together as 'Chelle hugs him. It's nice. It's comforting.

And the Nova wraps his arm around him and Zev just- crumples.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry-!"

Permalink Mark Unread

-Nova doesn't know what to do with that, it sounds too much like him-

"It's okay," he manages, thinking that might be the right think, pressing his head into Zev's shoulder. "It's okay, it's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle presses her lips briefly to Zev's temple, and then strokes Zev's hair, humming a quiet lullaby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev clings tighter to Nova's hand, and tries to wrap his other arm around 'Chelle, or at least touch her somehow.

"I love you," he says to Nova. He sounds devastated.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle shifts, helps him loop his other arm around her, keeps hugging him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me too, me too," Nova says, trying to get himself to say the whole thing, but he can't, the words don't feel natural on his lips, even though he knows he loves Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

He manages to hug them both. Nova, who has had his heart for years, and 'Chelle, who he gave a part so easily. He keeps his head close to Nova's, hoping that, somehow, Nova can burn the horrible images out of it.

That he could forget who he was.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know if he's helping, but he hopes he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps humming for a while, before pausing. "How about we move somewhere more comfortable? You guys should probably try to get some more sleep if you can?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes. We...we should."

Nova should.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, then, there's a bed right there."

'Chelle shifts, encouraging them both to their feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev braces his injuried hand on the wall, forcing himself up. It hurts, but he doesn't notice until after he's standing.

He thinks 'Chelle may have a point.

Permalink Mark Unread

From the raised eyebrow, she noticed that, but she doesn't comment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays close, not willing to let go of Zev's hand as they shuffle back to the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle pulls the covers back, and gestures for them both to get in. "Want me to stay?" she asks them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tries a smile. "Lan won't miss you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lan sleeps like the dead and I gave him a pillow to hug instead. He'd understand anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to-" Disturb you more than I have. Take you from what you would usually be doing. Force you to care about me.

"I don't want to keep you here when Lan so clearly needs something to cuddle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Lan has something to cuddle, and I want to be here if you want me to be." Stops. "I shouldn't be pushing, if you're trying to save my feelings because you don't want me here, don't worry, I can go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev-" Nova isn't sure what he's trying to get across - trying to get Zev to let himself have something he so clearly wants? Maybe that.

Permalink Mark Unread

He wants someone here in case his dreams become reality. In case someone needs to sink the knife in his pocket into his neck.

He doesn't know how to communicate this without upsetting Nova. He doesn't want anything to make Nova sad. He hates himself that he wasn't quiet enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

(He is enough, Zev is enough, Zev's everything, everything, everything, if Nova could only show him that...)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm staying," 'Chelle decides. "I'd just disturb Lan now."

She slides into the bed, and opens her arms to Zev and Nova. "I'm also a really good snuggler."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev turns to face Nova, cradling his face with his broken hand, even though it feels like a betrayal.

"You're enough. You're more than enough. You are everything," he says quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans into the touch. "You- so're- you are." He knows it's not very clear, but it's the clearest he can manage.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are too."

He gets into the bed between Nova and 'Chelle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova curls against Zev immediately.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle tucks the blankets around them, and snuggles up to Zev's other side, starts humming lullabies again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev curls up between them both, trying to be comforted as much as possible. He slows down his breathing, trying to trick himself into sleeping.

It doesn't come, but at least he seems at rest.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle doesn't seem to sleep either, humming softly for the next few hours.

Permalink Mark Unread

The doorbell going has Nova startling to full consciousness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev had managed to get into an almost meditative state (though he did have one hand on his knife the whole time), but startles with Nova.

"It's okay, it's probably Steve. The man Aaren wants us to talk to," he tries to reassure Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans into Zev, nodding tiredly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm gonna go say hi, you guys can take your time if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can go back to sleep. I'm here (whatever that means), I'm not going anywhere (is that actually a good thing?)."

To 'Chelle: "I'll...uh. I'll see how we go." He gives her arm a grateful squeeze.

Permalink Mark Unread

She presses a kiss to his cheek, slides off the bed, and pads downstairs, they can hear excited voices, and her greeting people.

Permalink Mark Unread

"M'fine," Nova says. "Not tired." Which is a lie, but he's not going to sleep any more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev isn't sure if that means Nova is sleeping anymore, but doesn't want to push it. After the few hours of carefully keeping his distance, however, a hunger for their usual contact has built in him.

"Would you mind if we just...stayed like this for a minute?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He presses closer. "S'fine. S'good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev hugs him closer, his arms trembling.

"I don't want you to feel like you have to. I don't want to make you. I just...being able to just- hold you...it means everything. After all this time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like it," Nova admits. "Doesn't hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev doesn't say anything to that, but curls tighter into Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova seems happy to stay curled up with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fifteen minutes later 'Chelle taps on the door. "Just to let you know breakfast's ready. No hurry, you can eat whenever you want."

They can hear her dragging Lan out of bed and down the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev sighs into Nova's shoulder. He doesn't want to get up. He wants to live in this bed forever and forget that the rest of the world exists.

But he wants to meet Steve, and see if he can help.

"Come on," Zev coaxes Nova, peeling back covers gingerly, his hand stinging.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova takes over pulling back the covers, and then slides out of the bed behind Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tightens his hold on Nova's hand. He shouldn't have to take care of him, but he can't deny the gratitude and love he feels that he does.

He leads them to the door, and opens it. He remembers not locking it last night, and does not regret it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, down the stairs then, and Nova shifting closer to Zev as they can hear voices in the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a redhead perched on one of the counters, head tilted back against the wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

A tiny, pixie-ish girl is leaning against Aaren at the stove.

Permalink Mark Unread

And an older man is sat at the table, drinking coffee.

Permalink Mark Unread

"G'morning, you two," Aaren greets with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev tucks his injured hand behind his back.

"You seem to have adopted more people overnight, Aaren," he says with a smile. He nods to the newcomers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think if anyone did the adopting it was me. Aaren just learned from me. I'm Steve, these are Ira," he points at the redhead (who glances over to them, yawns and tilts her head further back), "and Ant."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant turns, and skips back towards them. "Hi!" ey says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How are you so awake?" Lan complains, reaching out to poke Ant's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi," Zev replies, grinning at the overeager newcomer. "You seem far too awake for Lan's liking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone's too awake at this time in the morning for Lan," 'Chelle agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What can I say, once I'm awake, I'm very awake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is certainly a skill," Zev says with a grin.

He nods at Nova. "This is Nova. I'm Zev. Lovely to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you. C'mon, Uncle Aaren nearly has everything ready, you should sit down," ey gestures towards the spare chairs at the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev carefully tucks his hand into a pocket, keeping it hidden, as he leads him and Nova to seats.

He does make sure, like usual, to keep theirs close together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve gives him a shrewd look, but doesn't say anything, just gets to his feet, and helps Aaren move food over to the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren pauses next to Ira, nudging her elbow with a bowl.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flinches minutely sideways, and half looks like she's about to attack-

And then registers Aaren, and takes the bowl with a nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle starts talking about something to do with school while they eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova still eats, but keeps himself pressed against Zev's side, and is a lot more hesitant with more people.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev eats, to make sure Nova does and so that Aaren doesn't worry, but he mostly watches Ira and Ant. Not because he views them as threats, he trusts Aaren, but because they are strangers, and old habits die hard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira's poking at the bowl, that seems to, unlike their full cooked breakfasts, be scrambled eggs, although she still seems like she doesn't particularly want to eat it. (Is she watching them? Maybe.)

She seems awkward in her own body, like she doesn't quite feel right in her own skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant's cheerful, and keeps up with the conversation with 'Chelle, the two of the complaining about teachers and students together. There's something in the way ey keeps an eye on everyone at the table though. It isn't the hyper-vigilance Ira has going on, but ey's still watching.

Permalink Mark Unread

He keeps one eye on them, but his concentrates more on Nova and 'Chelle after it is clear they're not...threats.

After all, Nova and 'Chelle are the ones who found him. They're the ones he needs to protect most.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's finished eating, obviously full, but is still poking at the food on his plate.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Chelle seems fairly relaxed, and gives Zev a soft smile when she notices him watching her.

Soon though, everyone's finished eating.

"Ant, want a lift? Dad said I could take the car?" 'Chelle asks as she starts to clear the dishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ant gets up to help as well. "Yeah, that'd be good. And I'm here anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good luck," he says to them both, with a smile.

He's eaten even less than Nova/

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what are Ira's plans for today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thought I might roam the streets looking for someone to mug."

She doesn't seem to have eaten that much either.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm joking," Ira says. "I don't have any plans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because she's bo~ring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mugging people is certainly a plan, if one doesn't wish to get noticed by the authorities. Although, I guess that also depends on how talented you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Ira's the best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She hasn't stolen anything in nearly a month, I'm very proud."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, are your klepto tendencies finally vanishing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev lets them banter around him, keeping his focus on Nova, making sure all these people don’t freak him out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova's leaning more into Zev, trying not to overthink anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if no-one minds, I think I should have a bit of a talk with Zev and Nova?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, me and Ant should probably head to school, so we're gonna get on that. Lan, were you heading back to your parents' today?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I suppose I should, at that..." Lan sighs. "Drop me on your way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“We are seeing you soon, yes?” Zev asks Lan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, just haven't managed to talk my tutor into coming here. Suspect my parents had a hand in that-"

Permalink Mark Unread

-there a sound of ceramic cracking from the direction of Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev presses closer to Nova, looking at Ira with concern.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's moving, slow and careful like she's well aware that she's startled them. The bowl in her hands is obviously fractured, and there's blood dripping from them, along with whatever was in the bowl as she deposits into the sink.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do we need to go to hospital?" Steve is obviously having a hard time not going over to Ira, but he also isn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flinch at the mention of hospital. "Not that bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira sounds a lot like him.

His hand throbs sympathetically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'mon, I'll give you a hand cleaning that up and text Drex."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No point wasting his time," Ira says, but heads for the door, arms crossed awkwardly at the wrists, palms up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've talked about this, Ira," Steve says gently. "It's not a waste of anyone's time to make sure you're healthy and comfortable, and not injured."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’ve had to tell Nova the same thing,” Zev says, watching Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrinks a little against Zev's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's hard to see your own worth sometimes," Steve says, gaze moving from Ira, to Nova, to Zev. "Especially when you've been told you deserve the way you've been treated, that you owe people for everything you are, when in truth, you're all stronger than those people will ever be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev knows part of that is directed at him, but ignores it.

"See? It's not just me," he says to Nova, squeezing his hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira leaves, and it's almost like she's fleeing, although her movements are still steady and controlled. (And still somehow awkward.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaren-?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I got her, Steve," Aaren assures. "I'll make her play Ludo with me."

And he follows Ira out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev watches her go, and doesn't blame her for fleeing. If it wasn't for Nova, and how much he wanted him to feel safe, he'd probably have been right on her heels.

Instead, he keeps himself anchored by gently stroking his thumb across Nova's hand, using that to try and calm the racing of his heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to ask any difficult questions just now," Steve says. "I'm mostly here to introduce myself, and get to know you both a bit. If that's okay with you, that is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova squeezes Zev's hand slightly, hoping it'll help somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is comforted by it, and smiles at Nova to communicate that.

"Fine by me. Nova?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs awkwardly, half-nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I am Steven Rydel-Hackett, please call me Steve. Aaren is my younger half-brother. I am, as he has doubtless told you, a psychologist and therapist. I specialise in PTSD, but have a broad amount of experience in other areas. I have two wonderful kids who you've met, but that I probably shouldn't wax lyrical about."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods. "I'm Zev. This is Nova."

He figures Steve heard that earlier, when he introduced himself to Ant, but didn't hurt to do it again.

"Ant and Ira seem great."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova manages a tiny wave with his free hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very pleased to meet you both," Steve nods. "They are rather. Ant's jumped a grade since we got em back in school, and Ira's managed to get herself a job at a garage who can apparently barely function without her now. If the calls I keep getting asking if she can work her days off are anything to go by..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles. He sounds so proud of them. It's not hard to see that he's related to Aaren.

"How old is Ira?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She turned eighteen just over a month ago now." His eyes go briefly sad. "Thought I was going to throw her out when that happened, as though I hadn't adopted them both..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev insides go cold at that. He feels for Ira, that's something awful to think.

But now the idea's in his head. How soon is it until he turned eighteen? It can't be that far away. How long was it they'd left? What was gonna happen to them if Zev did have to go?

He managed to hold back from showing it, but couldn't help the way his jaw tightened.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is facing a therapist, who's been dealing with someone who's idea of a grin a tiny uptick at one corner of her mouth.

"Not that I'd have thrown her out any way." Or maybe he's just continuing his train of thought? "Quite beside the fact Ant would've sulked for weeks, I made a promise to them. That they'd always have a place with me. And if there's one thing our parents drummed into me and Aaren it's to never say something we don't mean."

He's meeting Zev's eyes, serious and certain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev can see that Steve understands. And maybe that should make him feel more centred. He didn’t think Aaren would force him to leave, the sad look in his eyes every time he reminded them that they didn’t have to stay told Zev that, but-

It was an irrational fear, born of knowing Nova needs a permanent safe place, and Zev not being the one to provide it. His biggest worry is what he’s supposed to do when Nova doesn’t need him anymore.

“Aaren has been very welcoming. We’ve appreciated everything he’s done, especially since he didn’t have to do anything.” Zev will never not be grateful for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you underestimate how much Aaren's managed to end up with Angelique and Drex's need to help every creature that needs it. But you're right, he didn't. The simple fact of that matter is: no-one is obligated to help anyone. We do it because we want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev nods. He’s right, no one is obligated to do anything, and before Aaren, people seemed to do even less.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now, I don't doubt that you both have a lot of stuff to untangle, from how you've been treated, and I'm here if you need me. I'm a good listener, and a good sounding board. I have a lot of experience as a rubber duck."

Permalink Mark Unread

“A what?”

It actually startles a laugh out of Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. "A rubber duck. It's a thing people apparently float in a bath?" he produces a smartphone and taps away with perhaps surprising adeptness, before turning it to show them an image. "And they talk out their problems to it, and in doing so, it helps them get things set straight in their head, or work out a solution."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yes, it looks like a capable listener,” Zev says, unable to stop the grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll buy you one," Steve teases with a light grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m, ah, working on speaking to people,” he says, with a look at Nova. “I’m getting better at it. I think.”

He laughs once. “No offence to the duck, of course.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, practice does make things easier. Besides which, we can give you the duck as a fall back."

Pauses, looks towards the kitchen door, taps away on his phone again. "Now, don't tell her I told you this, but, Ira's very good friends with this rubber duck." And he turns his phone around again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev snorts. Then gasps with dismay and covers his mouth with his and Nova’s joined hands.

“I have never snorted in my life.”

Permalink Mark Unread

It gets a tiny smile from Nova as well. He rests his head on Zev's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a Dad, trust me, I have experience making my kids snort. Surely you've seen Aaren make Lan and 'Chelle snort?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“That, and the reverse. He’s teaching them well.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll admit I have a hand in some of that," Steve says. "Now, is there anything you want to ask me? Anything at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Lan’s parents...he calls Aaren Dad, and he seems to live here. But he has parents?”

Probably something he should ask Lan himself, but he’s curious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that is...a thing." Steve looks tired, but he shakes his head, as if to clear it. "Important for you to know: I'm only sharing things I know Lan would tell you if you asked him." He pauses, runs a hand over his head. "Lan's parents weren't cut out to be parents. Their marriage was far more a match for power and money than any real love. Don't get me wrong, they were good friends, but Lan...was not what they wanted in a son. He's got some very unique views of things like monogamy, and relationships. The fact that he's...bisexual seems far too restrictive a term, and I dislike labels anyway, but it does as an explanation, but they're very...traditional. And they're vocal about their disapproval. Aaren was briefly a consultant for their bodyguards, and in that time, Lan and 'Chelle met, and became close friends. And Lan felt weird not calling Aaren 'Dad', and Aaren was happy for Lan to do so, so Lan calls Aaren Dad. And I'm fairly certain that Lan's parents only care about where their son is if he's going to somehow cause bad publicity, or if they need him to continue the appearance of a picture-perfect family. So, Lan stays here as often as he can. It works out best for everyone involved."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev’s heart hardens bit, every beat feels heavier.

“People shouldn’t have children if they’re not ready for them to be different to them. People should want a child, not a possession.”

His grip on Nova tightens.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're quite right. Unfortunately, people in...the social circle of Lan's parents, are expected to have an 'heir'. Ask him about his rant on the peerage sometime. But only if you can handle him spending a good ten minutes giving you a very in depth explanation on why it should be dismantled. He's got Aaren now, and 'Chelle, and the rest of us. He's got a proper family. Blood is only one kind of family, and people who say blood is thicker than water don't understand that quote."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," Zev quotes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Pauses. "I will warn you so you aren't blindsided by it. If Lan's feeling insecure, he switches to 'Mum'. Aaren doesn't mind, so it's not something to worry about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep that in mind. I wouldn't want to make Lan feel uncomfortable in his own house."

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve smiles slightly. "You're good kids. I'm glad we can help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles, resting his head on Nova's for a moment. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you have any other questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Not...not really questions. I wouldnt even know how to start.”

He directs his words more at Nova. Originally, Steve was going to be brought over to help Nova feel like he didn’t have to...that.

But after last night, he has to come to terms with the idea that they both need help, and Nova will suffer more if he doesn’t talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, is there anything you want to talk about? Again. Any topic at all. I once had a debate with a client about whether AC/DC or Black Sabbath were better."

Permalink Mark Unread

“...which one is better?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve gives a sly grin. "Neither, Led Zeppelin is superior, but I wasn't going to confuse the matter by adding a third point of view to the argument and they had been having the Black Sabbath-AC/DC argument with someone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

“You could’ve said anything and I would have to believe you,” Zev laughs.

He quietens after a moment. His words seem to weigh heavy on him. He tightens his grip on Nova.

“I...I don’t know what to do. Now. About anything. I want Nova safe, but that doesn’t mean me sticking my knife in whatever comes near him. I’m almost certain it means trusting whoever Aaren thinks will help.”

Zev shrugs, more to stop himself from crying. Again

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve rests his hand palm out on the table a silent offer.

"I can't say that I don't selfishly want you to trust us," he admits. "And I would on the whole prefer no stabbing. But I wouldn't expect you to just trust me on someone's word. I'll certainly do my best to earn your trust. And I'm bound by client confidentiality rules. Anything you say to me, I'm not going to divulge without your permission."

Permalink Mark Unread

“This- all of this, being out of the commune, there’s different rules than we had before. The way I got through everyday there, it doesn’t work here.”

Zev hesitates, then takes his bandaged hand out of his pocket to lay in Steve’s.

Permalink Mark Unread

He closes his hand very gently, not squeezing, or causing pain, just a steady presence. "How can we make this easier for you? You don't need to answer now, you can think about it, and let us know. This isn't about us making decisions for you, this is about us giving you the support you need to adjust to this."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I don’t know. I thought things were getting easier, but I suppose a few days is not long enough to let it settle. Let us settle.”

Zev sighs. He looks down. “I’ll think about it. I couldn’t tell you even right now what I feel like, let alone in the future.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve nods. "Just get used to being safe first. Here-" he awkwardly pulls a small notebook and pen out of his pocket and jots a number down on it, before ripping the page out and sliding it across the table, all one handed. "My number. You could ask Aaren, but I figure this is easier. Any time, day, night, if you want to talk, you call me. Hell, if you just want me to wax lyrical about Led Zeppelin, or Ira, or Ant. You can call me. Both of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev takes it, and gingerly folds it one handed, before stowing it away in his pocket, next to his knife. “Thanks. We’ll make sure we will.” He nudges Nova gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes. Thank you, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're both very welcome."

Pause. "Shall we go see whether Ira's started accusing Aaren of cheating again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“I think a change in mood would be good,” Zev agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go then," Steve rises to his feet, and pauses, before walking past them carefully, and heading for the living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You okay?” He says quietly to Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs. "Fine. You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev isn’t convinced, but he’s willing to let Nova choose when to talk. If he did...and Zev wasn’t reading into things.

“I’m sure something.” He gets up from the counter. “Maybe Aaren will put a fuzzy animal video on if we ask,” He smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe," Nova agrees with a small smile.

Living room?

Permalink Mark Unread

Living room.

Zev keeps their hands tucked together and follows after Steve.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira and Aaren are sat on the floor opposite each other, arguing about the rules of Ludo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve is sat in the far chair, shaking his head fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are in fact fuzzy animal videos playing on the TV already, and apparently that is a point of contention for Ira. Apparently it is an attempt to distract and therefore cheating.

Permalink Mark Unread

“She does make a valid point.”

Zev goes to sit on the couch, their ‘usual’ spot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You say that like she isn't palming the dice and switching them with a loaded set."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

“That’s just thinking ahead,” Zev laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like you," Ira declares.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren pouts. "You would."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova curls against Zev's side, content to let them bicker around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev laughs. "I'm very happy to be liked!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I also think that's the quickest anyone has got Ira to declare that. She doesn't say that very often at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It has always been a tactic of mine to find the most powerful person in the room and not get on their bad side."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a smirk off Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't start getting ideas, young lady."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't need to 'get' any ideas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep, not pushing my luck with that one."

He does smile approvingly at Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins back, and the expression is somehow weird, like her lips can't quite make the right shape.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys want in on the Ludo game?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you play?" Zev asks, looking at the game suspiciously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren grins and gives a quick overview of the rules.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does sound interesting, and Zev does want to give it a go, so he shuffles to the edge of the sofa, to be within reach of the board.

"Will you play too?" he asks Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shrugs, a little awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Give it a go?” Zev suggests gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira holds both of her hands up. "Promise I'll play fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’d be disappointed if you did.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira does not play fair. But her cheating does seem to be geared towards letting Nova and Zev win.

Permalink Mark Unread

-which Nova doesn't seem to know what to do with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev, however, takes full advantage. His boasting does include rapturous compliments towards Ira, however.

He meant what he said about not getting on her bad side.

Permalink Mark Unread

-which Ira clearly has no idea what to do with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve seems thoroughly amused by the entire situation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren would just like to win one game. Although he doesn't seem at all upset that he isn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev's not sure the chance aspect of the game is in his favour, but he seems to be doing well, though that is probably because of Ira's help. He's not so oblivious to notice that.

He makes sure Nova is having fun more than anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably? He doesn't really understand the game, but he's certainly not not enjoying it...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just celebrate the good rolls, and get mad at the bad ones. That seems to be the way it works."

Despite his words, he leans in close to make sure Nova isn't reacting badly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or complain at Ira, Ira seems to be the goddess of good rolls today."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny, quiet, probably-a-giggle, and leaning a little closer in to Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's rigging them somehow, but I cannot fault her for it," Zev laughs, smiling approvingly.

He leans closer to Nova in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only way to make this game interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Next time we're playing Frustration."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira shudders. "Only if you want it broken."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev flinches back, covering Nova. It's an old habit, but one that's been hard to break.

"Board games are surely flexible enough to cover a slight change in rules."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira notices, and she's almost apologetic, but there's a sudden tension in her shoulders. "The problem is the board itself. It's loud."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Frustration includes a dice rolling device that makes a clicking sound."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Loud board games. Surely that's an oxymoron."

He nods at Ira, seeing a kindred spirit in her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her eyes are fixed on a point just to the left of the TV, her hands white-knuckled. When she speaks, her voice is brittle, and clearly not aimed at anyone in the room. "I stopped caring about your opinion three years ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Ira?" Steve sits forward in his chair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gathers Nova closer to him, watching Ira warily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- it's nothing," Ira says, shaking her head abruptly. "Sorry. Thought- Never mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Steve's quiet for a moment, before shifting forward enough to rest his hand on Ira's shoulder - she winces slightly, and then leans back into him. "I'm here if you need to talk to me. We can figure it out." He doesn't push though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev watches, but doesn’t interject. This is something beyond his understanding.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-anyone want a cup of hot chocolate?" Aaren asks abruptly. "And scones! I have scones!"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Ah, I wouldn’t say no to a cup?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good idea," Steve agrees. "Me and Ira both." He squeezes Ira's shoulder gently when it looks like she's going to object - it isn't harsh, it obviously isn't to hurt, it's encouragement if it's anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You two want to come help me?" he directs at Zev and Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yeah...yes. Come on, Nova,” Zev says, kissing Nova’s temple to comfort him, before standing up to follow Aaren.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stays close to Zev as they make their way out of the living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys okay?" Aaren asks quietly as he pulls mugs out of the cupboard, and cocoa powder.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m fine. I’m just concerned about Ira. It would seem she’s haunted by literal demons.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll be okay," Aaren says, and he half sounds like he's trying to convince himself. "She's resilient." He looks thoughtful as he switches the kettle on.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Resilient isn't the same thing as a wall. Doesn't mean she faces things she shouldn't have to, alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ira's used to facing everything alone," Aaren says. "She's still getting used to the idea that it can be any other way. Still getting used to being allowed to be herself, in more ways than one. Steve's working on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You and your brother are good sorts. Not many would take on doomed charges."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren stops what he's doing, and steps closer to Zev and Nova, hands half out-stretched, but he pauses, waiting for permission.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev checks with Nova before he steps readily into Aaren's arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shuffles closer as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not doomed, any of you," Aaren says with certainty. Underneath his words, there's something else, a promise, that Aaren won't let them be doomed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev doesn't argue. but it doesn't change his belief. He still manages a smile when Aaren steps back.

"Cocoa was promised?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren will work on it. They've got time (he hopes).

"Yeah," he says as the kettle clicks off. "I did promise that, didn't I."

And he sets about making it, giving Nova and Zev a couple of fetching jobs - milk, butter, jam, plates, knives, everything they need for the cocoa and scones.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev follows instructions obediently, but does pause every so often to touch Nova somehow, a brush against his side, or a press of lips to his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova leans into the touches, partially because he wants to, partially because he's scared Zev will stop if he doesn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

It doesn't take them very long to have everything ready, and Aaren hands them their mugs, and carries a tray with everything else through into the living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira, perhaps surprisingly, has moved to be sat against Steve's legs, head resting against the arm of the chair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev hands her a mug, and another for Steve.

Once he's settled back on the couch, he accepts one from Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods her thanks, wraps her hands around the mug, and stares into it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova folds against Zev's side again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Zev," Steve says. "Aaren, I found a special on red pandas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know me too well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They do seem to be our comfort animal," Zev says with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are rather soothing to watch," Steve agrees, accepting a scone off Aaren.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then, an afternoon watching documentaries seems to be in order!

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev is happy to stay tucked against Nova's side, though he does notice a couple of hours later that his hand is throbbing. He puts his mug down to gingerly press against the broken knuckles. He's not particularly a doctor, but he's familiar with this particular injury.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren notices, and glances at his watch. "Drex'll be here in an hour or so."

Permalink Mark Unread

“That wasn’t necessary- ah. I mean, thank you.” Zev tucks his hand into his pocket, his chest feeling warm, even though he feels a little ashamed.

“It usually heals up all right, I’ve had to strap it before. ‘Chelle did a good job.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. But we can speed that up and stop you being in pain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Besides which, this one," Steve pokes Ira's head playfully, and she swipes vaguely at his hand. "Cut her palms open. And that does need fixing. So may as well see to you at the same time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev can't deny that bit of logic, even as certain that Ira would think of her own injuries the way Zev did of his.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira rolls her eyes and gives Zev a wry smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. It's decided then."

(As if it hadn't been decided before.)

"Did you want jam on your scone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev gives Ira a knowing look, and a smile of his own.

"Hmm. What kind of jam?" He looks at it curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. Blackcurrant, strawberry or Jersey black butter. That one's like...apple, molasses, cinnamon..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, now I'm curious. Can I try that last one?" He sits up, looking at the jar like he's waiting for it to spill its secrets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren smiles. "Of course you can!"

Scone, butter, black butter, present to Zev.

"Nova?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I'm fine, thank you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can have half of mine. Then we'll find out together if this jam is any good," Zev offers, breaking off a small piece for Nova.

Permalink Mark Unread

...he takes the offered bit and nibbles on it, more to reassure Zev than anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ira takes a butter scone, with mild reluctance, and a roll of her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev screws up his face at the taste, but after a moment relaxes. He eats the entire scone with a look of curious confusion.

"I cannot tell if I like it or not. I'm directly in the middle."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren grins. "And that is a totally okay place to be!" (Opinions, opinions are important things to have Zev and Nova expressing!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Doorbell!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do your scones work as a summoning charm or something?" Steve asks curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev knows that its most likely Drex, and if not, still someone that won't hurt Nova or him, but he still curls closer to Nova protectively.

It's an instinct at this point.

Permalink Mark Unread

And not one anyone is going to fault him for! Aaren goes to let Drex in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca bounds into the living room, and immediately comes over to greet Nova and Zev, tail wagging happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello Esca," Zev says fondly, gently stroking him with his bandaged hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca's tail speeds up happily, and he nuzzles under Nova's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova smiles and pets Esca too.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We wondered where you got to,” Zev mock accuses the dog, smiling enough that he didn’t sound even remotely angry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca gives a soft bark, nuzzles them both, and then trots over to lick Ira's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello to you too," she murmurs, scritching his ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex pads into the room, nodding to Steve.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Esca’s adorable face works on everyone, I see,” Zev says to Ira.

He smiles ruefully at Drex, then waves hello with his bandaged hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like dogs. You know where you stand with them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex grins at Ira, and shakes his head at Zev, more exasperated than angry.

"Here," he says, holding out one hand to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I know, just after you’d fixed me up.” His tone is joking, but his face is apologetic. “Should I unbandage it first?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're going to need to unbandage it afterwards, but either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev decides to just get it over with now, and untangles his fingers from Nova’s (apologising all the while), and unwraps the hand.

He almost wishes he didn’t. It’s not bleeding anymore, but the dried blood, mottled bruising and split skin is not a pretty sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex clicks his tongue, and keeps his hand extended insistently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev lays his hand in Drex’s.

Permalink Mark Unread

The same green light as before infuses their hands, soothing away the pain, and setting things back to rights. Green threads stitch the skin of Zev's knuckles back together, before fading away.

"There."

Permalink Mark Unread

No new scar joins the others, and Zev is once again amazed by Drex’s abilities.

“Thank you,” He says a little breathlessly and he clenches and unclenches his hand. It doesn’t hurt at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Welcome."

He turns to Ira.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really don't need to-" she says, trying to get to her feet-

Permalink Mark Unread

Esca chooses that moment to floomp down across her legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Traitor," she grumbles, but reluctantly extends her hands, palm up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex touches her hand, green light happens, and her palms are healed.

She makes a sound that might be gratitude.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at that, but he is a little saddened. Probably still thinks people will consider she owes something.

Like Nova and himself still do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drex sits himself down next to Ira and ruffles Esca's fur, clearly praising the dog.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova relaxes against Zev's side, clearly happier now that no-one is injured.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m going to quickly go wash all the...gunk off. Be right back.” He kisses Nova’s temple and heads towards the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren and Angelique are having a quiet conversation in the kitchen.

Permalink Mark Unread

They’re probably talking about Nova, Zev thinks when he emerges the bathroom, hand clear of residue. He wants to know what they’re talking about, and if it were strangers he’d probably eavesdrop.

Instead, he coughs so they know he’s passing through, offering them a smile as he returns to the living room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zev," Angelique says. "How are you? Could we talk to you for a moment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," Zev says, a little concerned. "I'm good. And yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's nothing to worry about," Aaren assures, "we just think you'll have a better idea about how Nova will react to things."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Is something wrong with Nova’s fire?”

He guessed it was about that, just from Ange being here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite the opposite," Angelique says carefully. "I looked into what my response meant. I'll admit I was...startled, by what I finally found..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did you find?" Zev's heartbeat is thudding almost painfully against his ribs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's powerful. The strongest fire elemental I've ever met." Pauses. "And believe me when I say that his control is impressive, and definitely in spite of anything that was done to him in an attempt to make him control it-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really? The most powerful?"

He knew it. Not that he knew previously there was a scale, but Nova was the strongest person he knew.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really," Angelique confirms. "But the reason I can confirm that- it turns out that he is...most likely my cousin." She reaches out to squeeze Zev's arm. "This changes nothing, Zev. You and he stay together."

Permalink Mark Unread

She said it, and Zev knew that she meant it, but Ange being Nova's cousin? That means he would have a family. A proper family.

And as excited as he was by that prospect, he knew that it would mean they would have to part at some stage. The thought terrified him.

"No, of course. But the fact he has family is wonderful. I couldn't imagine anyone being related to you and letting what happened to him go on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't have allowed what happened to either of you," Angelique says, hand still resting on his arm. "If I'd known about him, both of you would have been safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, but I don't think there was any way you could've known. If anyone had known what was happening, I imagine we would've been freed years ago."

He's trying to sound as blank as possible, to stop his thoughts wandering towards 'what ifs'.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles sadly, squeezes his arm again. "But my problem is that I don't know how Nova will respond to this information. I can't predict that. I was hoping you might have a better reading?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...I don't think he'll understand. We've never had a family, a proper one. I don't think he knows what that means."

Zev isn't sure he knows either.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think it would do more harm than good to tell him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think so. It's a foreign thing, but not something he should fear. He'll...he'll think you'll want something in return until you show him otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That won't be hard. The only thing I want is for him to be safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In that we are the same, Ange."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am very glad he had you, Zev. And that you had him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles, and it's a little sad, but he still feels grateful for her words. "Me too. My life was made better by his presence. I hope I can do the same for him."

He rubs his knuckles almost subconsciously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do," Aaren assures quietly. "It's easy to see for anyone who watches you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He leans into Aaren easily at that, tucking his head into his shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren hugs him, firm but not too tight. "We should probably talk to Nova before we get too stuck here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev murmurs agreement, and separates himself from Aaren a little regretfully.

"Let me go and make sure he's comfortable. Give me a moment."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren squeezes his shoulder. "That's fine. We'll be through in a couple, just gonna finish making Drex and Ange a cuppa."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles at Aaren, and then heads back into the lounge room.

He slides back into his spot beside Nova, tugging him close.

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes easily, if a little confused, and leans his head against Zev's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

He kisses Nova's forehead very softly, before resting his head on top of Nova's.

Permalink Mark Unread

He relaxes a little into Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How's the documentary going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Red pandas continue to be red pandas."

Permalink Mark Unread

Angelique and Aaren rejoin them at that point, Angelique carrying a mug over to Drex, leaning down to kiss Steve's cheek, and then retreating to the chair Aaren's brought in and put next to the other armchair.

"Red pandas continuing to be red pandas is definitely a positive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I would very much like to see a real one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can go to the zoo at some point this week. Possibly have to wait until Saturday. 'Chelle will pout at us if we go without her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would never deny 'Chelle that. I would fear the repercussions of that pout," Zev says with a laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That pout has felled greater men than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Steve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Said as though it explains everything," Angelique laughs. "Such Drex."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev laughs along with Ange.

Permalink Mark Unread

(It's good to see them happy.)

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment, Angelique looks at them. "Nova, I thought you might like to know that I discovered why my fire reacted to you the way they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova presses a little tighter against Zev. "I, um- that's okay, it's fine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm here," Zev says, wrapping his arm a little tighter around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not alright to keep something from you about this," she says carefully. "You're one of the strongest fire elementals I've ever met, if not the strongest. Stronger than me certainly." Pauses, tries to work out the best way to explain this. "Elementals respond to bloodlines, their own bloodlines especially. My reaction, that suggests you're family to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

-Nova doesn't even know what that means. But-

But he clings tight to Zev, because does that mean they're gonna take him away from Zev? He doesn't want to be taken away from Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going anywhere." It feels like a promise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither of you are unless you want to," Aaren says firmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It changes nothing. Your choices are the important thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova tucks his head into Zev's neck, he doesn't know how to respond to this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to know what to do, now. She's just letting you know. You have family, real family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-he already had a real family, Zev," Angelique corrects. "Now you just have more, if you want it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you don't have to say anything now. We can totally just go back to watching documentaries and planning zoo visits to see red pandas."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev smiles fondly at Ange.

"What Aaren said. We don't have to think about it now, if it bothers you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods into Zev's neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know, perhaps we should make an entire family outing of this zoo trip, I'm sure Ant would love to go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be wonderful, ey's great fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got work," Ira says with a careless shrug. "I'll pass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't act like you're not upset about that. We'll organise something when you're available as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will be sorely missed," Zev says with a smile.

He rests his head on Nova's again, running one hand up and down his arm, trying to be soothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova shudders a little and then melts a little against Zev.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll barely notice I'm not there once you've got all the animals to coo at."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev wraps himself as tightly around Nova as possible.

"You are very memorable, the animals must be incredibly cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks away, obviously somewhat startled by that, and not sure what to do with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose me and Drex should probably be on our way. We unfortunately have things to do..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, again," Zev says sombrely to Drex.

Permalink Mark Unread

"'D say anytime, but 'd rather you didn't keep getting hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

Angelique moves over to the sofa, approaching from Zev's side, and leaning down, telegraphing carefully, to press a brief kiss to his cheek, and squeeze his shoulder. She smiles at Nova.

"Enjoy the rest of your days. If either of you want to talk, Aaren has my number."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zev leans into the soft touches appreciatively. "Thank you. We'll remember that."

He waves once at Drex. "I'll try to remain uninjured. For at least your sake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Preciate it."

Drex ruffles Ira's hair of all things as he stands up, whistling quietly so that Esca will follow him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren gets up to show them out.
