She doesn't get on the bus.

It was the last bus for the night too. She could walk her way back to the Byrnes... but she's not going to. Can't make herself go back to that house and pretend to be normal. Can't force herself apologise to Brian again... or Bentley. She doesn't even want to look at them -- at him.

She's a terrible person. The Earth has been invaded by evil aliens and her maybe-not-boyfriend could be possessed by one. The thought terrifies her. The idea of someone taking her control away...

So she stays at the bus stop and goes nowhere at all.

The bus stop has nothing to offer her.

Fine. She can't stay here forever. She could go back to David's... his parents were nice enough.

Or she could also not do that. She'll see him tomorrow. It's not the first time she's been homeless for a night.

...the construction site. Not an option.

She stands and heads in the opposite direction. No clue where she's going. Away.

The night sky offers as few answers as the bus stop. She already knows its secrets. They're on Earth.

As she walks down the city streets, cars pass by occasionally. None of them stop for her. They have their own concerns, and have no interest in hers.

The opossum jumping down from a nearby tree seems more interested, by comparison. It hisses loudly, waiting for her reaction.

She stares at the ugly little creature and is slightly tempted to acquire it.

...the thought passes quickly and she hisses at the thing in return and continues on her way.

But the main idea remains. She has a bunch of human morphs, maybe there are some slightly more friendly animals around that she can pet. Practice for when they go to the zoo, at the very least.

With enough effort, Sarah can locate a squirrel. The squirrel seems disinclined to approach her, freezing as she draws near.

She makes her movements slow, reaches into her pocket and pulls out a half-eaten muesli bar. She sits down nearby and offers a piece of it to the animal.

After a long pause, it reaches towards the food.

And she reaches for it quickly and tries to acquire it.

The squirrel becomes docile at her touch.

...yeah. Still creepy.

She holds it there for as long as she can keep it. Trying to plausibly look like a weirdo who pets squirrels and not a weirdo teenager with alien shapeshifting powers who is stealing the poor squirrels form.

The squirrel becomes less docile after a few moments, fleeing back to a nearby tree.

At least it got a treat.

She stands and looks around for some sort of private space.

There are very few truly private spaces. The inside of this dumpster might be relatively unobserved.

"My kingdom for a place to call my own."

She's not going to risk it and decides to go someplace not so crowded and also gross.

As she moves away from the town proper, she can find alternatives. There is a playground, containing a closed slide, and there is a relatively quiet tennis court. There is a church, closed for the night.

Breaking into the church could cause her a lot of trouble if she got caught. Sucked that it was her best option.

She goes to the playground instead and sits on a swing.

Her life is insane. What the fuck. Here she is looking for a place to change into a squirrel.

Okay, she's going to sit here and wait until full dark. And then. Go into the slide and turn into a squirrel? Okay. She can do this.

Probably.

No one else disturbs her.

When it's dark enough she takes a proper look around. Is anyone nearby?

The playground and the surrounding streets are empty.

This is weird. Weird. Weird, weird.

She goes into the slide, quickly takes off her outerwear and reaches for the new squirrel part of her.

As she thinks about the squirrel, she begins to change. Her body shrinks first, turning her into a dimunitive Sarah. The fur comes next, followed shortly by the tail. Her bones sound as if they crack and twist as her body reshapes itself, but she feels no pain. As the squirrel rests on its hindquarters, the last hints of her humanity fade away.

-- and she's a fucking squirrel.

The small slide is so big now. Or she's so small.

And... she has a tail. Rationally she knew this. Squirrels have tails...

The slide is really big. So big.

She can't see any predators, which means she should look for food.

Yes. That is definitely a thing she should do.

Foodfoodfoodfood. She's so hungry.

So jumps out of her pile of clothes, jumps off the scary big slide and into the wider world.

The wider world is full of food, probably. Of course, it's also full of movement. There are tiny things in the grass, and less tiny things in the trees and on the streets. She should stay away from all of those things- they're not food.
