"I hope that's not too confusing?"

"It's strange. But not confusing. I can sort of... guess the genre of thing. But the exact wording isn't there and that's where the magic is."

"Good," Nicole says, and scoots over and hugs Rowan again.

She smiles at her and something in her relaxes. Her nerves and the need to runrunrun falls silent.

"I'm glad it was you."

Nicole seems uncertain how to respond to that.

"Just... not a lot of people would be so considerate."

"...yeah."

She squeezes Rowan a little tighter.

She hugs her back and leans her head against her shoulder.

"Are you hungry? I could make you something. I don't know how long you were running from them."

They say not to eat food from fae. She's not sure how much that matters now.

"A while," she admits. "Food would be nice, if you want to?"

(And what if -- no, this is fine, she's safe, if something goes that wrong she'll just wake up--)

The air ripples again and she stands.

"I'm a great cook -- though I don't actually know any human recipes. Most of the food I eat is plant-based. You can eat that, right?"

"'pends on the plant, but if it's stuff humans grow it should be fine." She watches Rowan with interest. "That doesn't cost you anything, the shifting?"

She lists off the type of plants she has to eat -- all of them, save one or two, are familiar to Nicole and eatible.

"It costs a little, but kind of like flexing a muscle? It's magic but instinctual. To me. Not many other fae, hybrid or otherwise, can do the same. I think it's on my mother. She must have been pretty incredible."

"You don't know? --Those sound fine, thank you, except for--" she names the few she doesn't recognize "--I don't know those."

She hands her a cup of water and starts preparing their food.

"I was a Changeling. Or something like it. I had to go to a blood-worker to find out anything about my birth parents. And all they could find out was that my father was human and my mother some sort of fae."

"Oh," Nicole says, quietly.

"I've been trying to find my human father, but there are so many humans in this world. It's ridiculous."

Nicole laughs.

"What do you have to go on?" she asks, after a moment.

"Not much. The blood-worker made me an amulet of my blood, but they did their thing to it so now it acts as a sort of... compass. But it has a really short range."

"How far?"

"'Bout three hundred metres. I've been thinking about going a bit further to one of the more populated cities. Trying it then."

Nicole nods. "I -- When we get out of this I can show you the city, if you want."

She smiles over at her.

"We'll definetely get out of this. The Queen likes me. We should talk to her."

Nicole looks -- dubious, at the part about the Queen.

"It'll be fine. We need to do something, they won't stop hunting you otherwise. It's their thing."

"--I know," she replies. "Do you think that's more likely to help than -- this?" she taps the book lightly.
