Felix in Beacon Hills (again; this time with more Fenris)
Permalink Mark Unread

One Felix away from home. One Felix here.

The immortality is powerful, but ultimately not perfect, and there was no way to account for inter-dimensional travel. Felix was captured in some extremely bizarre phenomena in the middle of the Bermuda Conflux and snatched to another world. As a result the immortality spring count him as "disconnected" and created a second Felix as usual, but also warned that it was a disconnection, not a true death. And a piece of the dreamshard was missing too at same time, no way a coincidence. And with a odd stroke of inspiration, Fenris decides to meditate holding the dreamshard.

It takes two weeks until they figure out that the dreamshard wanted to be used again, to have new dreamshapers, and another week after that to unlock some of it's power, to see that other Felix in another world, an Earth unlike their own, but an Earth nonetheless.

Fenris meditates with the dreamshard, unraveling it's secrets and desires and, after nearly two months he... strikes a deal of sorts. Three volunteers become dreamshapers. Three more if the plan is a success.

Then there is the other end of the bargain.

Fenris couldn't find a way to retrieve the other Felix back, it might truly be beyond the dreamshard power.

But Fenris thinks of an alternate solution, go to that Felix, be there for him, the immortality spring will mean a Fenris here to live his life, knowing that in the multiverse there is another Fenris keeping company to the second Felix. To patch the fucking flaw in reality that allows any version of his brother to experience even a second of misery.

That idea turns out to be rather controversial.

Two months and one day after the Bermuda incident, they have come up with yet another alternative. Fenris himself doesn't need to go alone.

So, after two months and two days there are twelve immortal skymages flying towards the Shattered Skies, the epicenter of the Bermuda Conflux weirdness and the place where one Felix disappeared.

The other Felix is flying right beside him looking concerned. If this plan works, it means... two Felixes in the same universe. A great boom for that universe, in Fenris opinion.

Their grandfather and sister are also there, they have been told everything and aren't going to come in this trip, but want a farewell of sorts. But they keep a large distant, too far to shout, too far to hear Maira crying, she still doesn't understand everything, but understand that these Fenris and Felix won't see her for a really long time. So both grandfather and granddaughter insisted on coming to watch.

They get in the general area where Felix was snatched away and Fenris takes out the piece dreamshard they brought.

The other nine that are meant to do this one-way journey reach out and hold it. They wait.

They don't have to wait for very long, the portals flare with tendrils of energy and they are snatched away...

...and now they are flying above a town, Fenris actually lets go of the dreamshard, but of course he chained it to his hand, so it doesn't fall.

There are only five of them, Fenris, Felix, Kato, Vera and Vii. This isn't a sign that the plan worked correctly.

Well, does this at least look like the correct place?

Permalink Mark Unread

It looks like a quiet town surrounded by a forest. Warm and sunny, but not otherwise very exciting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris can recall the place from his dreamshard meditations. It fits, not a certainity, but it fits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix, the one that came, is worried with what happened with the other five.

Vera comforts him.

Vii points out they should find the other Felix soon.

Kato is just quiet, but he offers a bracelet to anyone that wants to scout the place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris volunteers as a scout, taking the bracelet. And sends the other four to find a place where their Felix to find pocket dimension activity that indicates where the other Felix is.

They really should've come up with nicknames for the Felixes.

Anyway, Fenris uses fog to cover their descent and then activates the bracelet, their wings are still there but invisible and Not Important even if touched.

Fenris walks around, searching for familiar faces from his dreamshards visions and asking "Has anyone seen my identical twin?" and "Does anyone know someone called Scott McCall?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are you looking for Scott?" asks this random passerby.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have reason to believe he knows where my identical twin is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you lost your twin I don't know how a high school kid can help, but if you'd rather I not go to the police or the hospital..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It isn't urgent enough to involve them yet, if you would be so kind as to point me towards the right direction I would greatly appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't actually know where he lives. You can go to the hospital and ask for Nurse McCall, and tell her you're looking for her son. Don't imply there's anything actually dangerous going on, nurses have to tell the cops if they think there's been a kidnapping or something. If you're really sure, that's what I would do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not a kidnapping, just a personal thing," Fenris says with a smile that looks forced but polite, "Thank you. If you see Scott, would you tell him that Fenris Dalkaila is looking for him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll make sure to keep an eye out. Good luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," Fenris walks away, he knows where the hospital is.

He makes more fog, takes flight and lands near the hospital.

Where he can find Nurse McCall?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nurse McCall is between patients, hanging around by the nurses' station.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, do you happen to be Scott McCall's mom?"

Fenris watches for her reaction, maybe she recognizes Fenris' face from interacting with Felix? In that case, the lack of wings would be very surprising.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not even a flicker of recognition.

"I am. Is that what I'm known for around here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My apologies, I was asking because that me and my twin are new in town and we accidentally got separated and I was told he was with Scott McCall. We lost our phones during the move so I can't just call him. Do you mind put me in contact with Scott? Or do you happen to have seen Felix? We are identical."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I can't say you look familiar. I'll give you his number and Scott will handle it until my shift is over."

She borrows a notepad from the desk and scrawls a number on it.

"Here, see if you can figure it out, and if you still haven't found him, I'll call in reinforcements."

She returns to work, leaving him with the piece of paper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, that shouldn't be necessary. I just need to tell Felix something."

Fenris keeps the polite smile until she is out of sight, then he finds the nearest phone and calls Scott.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, do you know if escargot is just snails or can it also be slugs? Or do they just look the same?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm almost certain it needs to be snails, usually specific kinds because otherwise it isn't profitable. Why do you ask?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, we should definitely talk later. I'm assuming you're looking for Scott? He'll be here in a minute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm looking for my brother Felix, who I believe is or was with Scott."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Scott would have mentioned something. Oh, here he is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry about that, what do you need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm looking for my brother, Felix Dalkaila. I'm Fenris and I have strong reasons to believe you are or were with him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry, I don't think I've heard of him. How did you get this number, why do you think I know him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have my reasons and..." Fenris makes sure there is no one hearing, good, "I know things about you, Scott. So I would appreciate your honesty very much. Are you absolutely certain you don't know where my brother is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did Derek send you? I don't know what sort of game this is, but I'm not in the mood for any life lessons right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know who Derek is. I have no desire to inconvenience you, but it has been two months since my twin brother went missing and your name is the closest thing to a clue I have to his whereabouts. Do you mind arranging a meeting? I understand some things are too sensitive to be talked over the phone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. We can meet behind the high school. How soon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris speculates the benefits of trading places with someone else in his group, and decides that he can still use the bracelet long enough to talk to Scott and that securing the boy's cooperation is a better use of his time. He asks Scott for directions and gives him a time.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then they can meet, on the lacrosse field.

It's nearing sunset, but it's still light out.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's Scott, his eyes an unusual shade for most humans.

There are the claws, too, which he's keeping at his side. No need to seem too threatening. They're just talking.

He has it under control.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's hard to see the sunset with all the clouds and unusually dense fog. Fenris is amidst it, watching Scott's approach from above. Then Fenris lands and disperses the fog, it gives the effect that he appeared out of nowhere.

"Hello, Scott. I am sorry if this inconvenient to you, but I really have no other clues. Have you seen my brother? He is my identical twin with a remarkable distinction."

The distinction being the wings, Felix's being red-orange and Fenris' being white-gray, not that Scott can see those. Fenris is still keeping them invisible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry, I don't recognize your face. How did you know about me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris pays close attention, but can't find any obvious tells of a lie.

He doesn't let the pure abyss of despair hit the surface, maybe Scott is lying, maybe something else happened.

"I have a way to see visions of my brother, it's very hard to control but your face showed up enough times near his that I could even manage to get your name. I even saw you..." Fenris waves at his own face, "you know, and came here searching for him."

The most vague form of the truth, the best one to share when you don't know who you are dealing with.

"Any idea why that might have happened? You mentioned a Derek..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I really think I would remember this. Derek is...a friend, but we disagree on things sometimes and I thought he was trying to make a point, by sending you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris sighs.

"Well, thank you. And I'm sorry if this inconvenienced you."

"I don't have secure contact information," in this universe that is, "but when I do, would you mind contacting me if you hear anything about my brother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you should wander around until you know more about Beacon Hills. Try not to go to far away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, thank you for the warning, but what do you mean exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's weird stuff going on around here, and I don't know that much about it, but if you're not involved, you're safer that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try, but you can see why I have a personal investment even it isn't safe," Fenris is mostly definitely safe though, immortality is convenient that way, "what can you tell me about the weird stuff? I assume it's related with yours..." Fenris waves, "should we move this conversation to somewhere more private than an open field?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He mostly wants you to leave him alone, but doesn't mind talking if it'll help you find your brother. I don't trust you and think you're going to kill us if you get us alone, so, we're staying right here. No one can hear us from this far way, but they'll see if you try anything."

This from the guy skulking about the bleachers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Reasonable," Fenris gives him a polite smile, "I was mostly concerned with his privacy. Have we been introduced?" He asks Stiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Stiles. We were talking about snails until you revealed your hidden agenda or whatever, finding your 'brother' and all that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, finding my brother is my hidden agenda," Fenris confirms, "and while I am willing to force a meeting with Scott I have no desire to see him harmed. If he shares his problems and I think of a way to help him, I will help him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know what's going on around here? Maybe you can help us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... probably know way less than you do," given that he is from another universe, "basically all I know is a connection between you and my missing brother. I do want to help, but I need to think about it," and consult with the others, "before committing to anything. Knowing what I'm committing to help with will help me think, but I fully understand that you two aren't going to trust the... guy with a hidden agenda," Fenris says that looking at Stiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far every new person we meet who knows what I am has been against me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris tilts his head. "Why are they against you? Who are those people? And what do you mean with against you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know! There's a lot aggression in this town and most of it is pointed at me right now. If you really think something happened to your brother, it was probably the hunters or Derek."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay. First, who is this Derek? Second, who are those hunters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell me what you know about me so far, and how you found out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris looks around. Making sure the onky three of them are with in earshot.

"I have an artifact that shows me visions when I meditate holding it. I had visions of you and my brother, this town and other things, then used it to come here, but I suspect that at best it was nearly a hit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you think I'm not actually the person you're looking for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly or possibly not, but it was my best shot to find my brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell me more about what you saw. Maybe we can help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, I don't know about this. I think we should just go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris glances between Stiles and Scott. "How about if we all leave and think about our options? I will try to get in touch with you again, maybe tonight, but no later than tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. We'll talk soon. I hope you find him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

With that Fenris steps back into the fog, which gets too dense to see him, but Scott can hear a couple of steps after the other boy vanishes.

Then the steps stop completely, all Fenris can hear is the wind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott and Stiles...go home.

They talk for hours about plans, but don't really get anywhere.

Scott wants to help Fenris. Stiles doesn't trust him.

Stiles goes home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris also goes home, or at least his new home in this universe. He meets Vii in earlier the designated spot and they both go through the portal into Felix's  (the one that came, not the one that is lost, they really need nicknames) pocket dimension, which now contains a very luxurious home for the five of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

This Felix confirms this is the wrong world. He managed to get copies of various news outlets from three different universes. And no idea what happened with the other five that should've come with them. At the time Fenris comes back with the news Felix and Vera are comforting each other while Kato is cleaning up after the vase he broke.

They all sit down and talk.

This isn't their home and it isn't their target destination.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris already had a general idea what to do in this situation. As far they can tell, only the Shattered Skies allows travel between universes, and since they don't exist here...?

Permalink Mark Unread

Vii checked, no Shattered Skies. The area surrounding them is known as the Bermuda Triangle, not the Bermuda Conflux in this world, and has a reputation but not nearly as promising.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they will leave the responsibility to the people in their own universe until there is reason to change that instance.

Meanwhile, they will help the locals at the best of their ability.

Which means that Scott gets a phone call late at night.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sound on the other end is more like growling than talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, no, there is talking. Silly mistake to make, thinking the boy was growling.

"Uh, hi. Are you the guy from earlier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. We would like to meet again. Make a exchange of secrets if you will. I don't know what is going on in this town and I would like to. I can tell you more about myself and how much I can help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can meet at the same place, but we'll drive you somewhere more private."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure," Fenris says albeit a car isn't going to be necessary for Fenris to follow, "this isn't urgent in a scale of hours so we can meet tomorrow if you want to. Do you mind if I bring a friend? I can come alone if that makes you feel safer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a friend too. Go ahead. See you tomorrow. Have a good night."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hangs up.

Permalink Mark Unread

At what time?

Alright, tomorrow morning Fenris will text message about it.

The group spends the time coming with up with various general plans to help this world.

As suspected, when the waters of a immortal spring are taken to a new world it grows into an entirely new an independent spring. In Felix's dimension there are four unclaimed springs. There ought to have a way to exploit this.

But before any cheating can happen, Fenris and Felix have a meeting to attend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless there are any objections, they meet at 3:00 in the afternoon, just after school.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is absolutely fine. When they get there the field is once again covered with dense fog, what a weird coincidence.

Permalink Mark Unread

But this time there are two people waiting for them in the field, however they look identical.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh great. Two of them," he whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi. Welcome to town," he says, hushing Stiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," says one of them. "Fenris said that you would like to drive us somewhere more private so we could talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles is taking us to his house. His dad will be out late, so we'll have the chance to talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stiles waits impatiently by the Jeep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan," Felix says politely.

The two steps in the Jeep, they don't rest their backs against the seat, what a odd way to seat.

"Call me Felix, it is a long story and I don't think we should tell it while anyone is driving."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll wait."

And they arrive shortly.

Stiles parks the car, while Scott leads them inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. You first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix removes his bracelet and puts a hand on the wall for balance, experiencing the exhaustion side effect of using the thing.

Also his wings stop being invisible they are large and have a firey orange-red scheme.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris does the same, he doesn't anything for balance, because has the option to levitate, so he does just that, hovering a couple inches in the air and ignoring gravity.

His wings too turn visible, they are white almost-gray and have two claws each.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't be afraid. We are not angels or demons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay. Stiles, don't worry, they're just also some kind of supernatural creature."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stiles does not look like he's not worrying, standing in the doorway.

"Yeah, I'm going to hope my dad stays at the station really late tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what is going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Starting from the beginning, please don't interrupt me. We are from an alternate Earth where magic is publicly known and there are these things called pocket dimensions that are also publicly known. Felix and I are skymages, a kind of magic person, and are also immortal for different reasons. Felix was flying around an area with several half-broken portals to pocket dimensions called the Shattered Skies and was zapped by a mysterious energy and taken to another universe. And the way our kind of immortality works it means that we got a fork. A Felix in our home universe and a Felix in the other one. We used an artifact and saw the astray Felix around a Scott and tried to reach him. An one-way trip so he wouldn't have to be alone in another world since the trip would leave forks of us behind.

But we failed. We landed in this universe instead, half of the people in the trip didn't show up at all and we have no idea where they are. Since this place doesn't have a Shattered Skies we basically don't know a way to move between universes and have since decide to simple adopt this one and try to improve things here while our copies back home deal with the lone Felix situation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't just adopt a universe!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, for one, welcome our benevolent not-angel not-demon overlords."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris looks at Scott like he just said something utterly stupid.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And that is why you will have a place in our future Eternal Stormlord Imperium," Felix says with a bit of edge of 'lets break the tension', "but it isn't really that bad. We just have a lot of power and would like to use it nicely and helpfully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I mean, I understand that you're stuck here, but that doesn't mean you get to decide what happens to an entire world!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you trying to promote democracy to stormlords?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Calm down. We are not going to barge in the UN and demand their surrender. Instead we are going to use our powers to help people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might eventually found our own nation. But we aren't going to invade anyone for that, I am particularly fond of the variation of that plan were we terraform Mars."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did I tell you. Benevolent dictators."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm all for saving lives. What did you have in mind first? What can you do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Besides the obvious flight," Felix waves his wings, "We can both control the weather and - please don't be scared - I'm pyrokinetic. Our immor-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris interrupts. "What is the situation that you're dealing with? And what resources do you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a werewolf. Every werewolf is born to an alpha, or turned by one. I don't know who the alpha who turned me is, but he's forcing me to do things, in my sleep. Hurt people. Derek is a werewolf who used to live here, and his sister was killed by the alpha. There are hunters, and they kill omegas, werewolves without an alpha. They also kill rogue alphas and their packs, like mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

The two are appealed by this description.

"Please tell me they at least don't wear white hoods and burn crosses on lawns?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris pinches the bridge of his nose. "Okay, we are going to get back to the hunters in a minute. What are you doing to stop the alpha taking control of you? Or stop him in general? Derek was the guy that gave you life lessons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Derek is trying to help me learn to control the shift. Control being a werewolf, and not hurting people. The alpha...won't leave me alone unless something happens to it or I get better at resisting it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How likely are the odds of you hurting people? And I was thinking more about chains or locking yourself in a closed room or maybe sedating you to the point where you can't sleepwalk under the alpha's control."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We haven't tried sedation. Chains don't work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your mother didn't think it would be safe to sedate you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't told her about this."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fenris, don't say anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you do it," Fenris says clenching his jaw.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, Scott. I know it must be a really difficult time to you and maybe there are sound reasons for you keep it a secret but I have to ask... you do realize that people have the right to have an accurate picture of how dangerous it is to share a house with them? I mean, could the alpha use you to hurt your mom? Actually could the alpha hurt your mom if you don't cooperate? Not to mention the potential help a nurse could give you in this situation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think he would make me hurt her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might know more than I do, but it would be my obvious concern. Specially if you managed to resist him, target her so you would cooperate. Actually, are you sure you are the only one he is controlling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far. If he scratches more, he has more peole to control. I hadn't even thought of that. I don't know why he's doing any of this, I don't know what he's willing to do..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix puts a hand on his shoulder. "We will help you figure out a way to stop this. We have tons of resources to offer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be good to know what werewolves can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's hear about these resources. The main thing werewolves have going for them is just strength, you can probably beat that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yes. Unless they can leap or throw objects high enough to reach the clouds, which I think you would mention that. Also... there are a total of five of us, we have some miscellanea of minor magical items including the things that disguised our wings. Felix and I have an ability called dreamshaping which allows us to expand our own pocket dimensions during sleep and set portals to and from it. In practical terms, with minimal preparation, Felix's pocket dimension gives us the perfect defensible place, the ability to create any non-magical material, equipment or high-skilled personnel, free energy, and the ability to invade or escape other places by setting portals. On top of the weather-manipulation and immortality."

Then Fenris smiles in a way that is very much like an wolf baring his teeth while also being a smile.

"Good thing you welcomed us, your new benevolent dictators."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix glares at Fenris.

"I would like to make a formal statement that I don't go around randomly creating people. Fenris said that, all of that, because he is in a bad mood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Getting stuck here must be awful, but I think we're going to want to talk to the other people with you, before we can trust you. We've been dealing with it on our own for a couple of weeks now, we can do it if we have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can meet the others, do you want to call them now? They all can fly so it wouldn't take long for them to get here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that's alright, we'd appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix calls the others.

"How about Derek? Should we call him in case he has something interesting to say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He has kind of a temper, he might not listen first. Wait until we talk to him, explain you mean well, maybe? He won't attack you then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Is that his reaction to unknown winged people?

"Very well, while we wait for the others. What can you tell us about the hunters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't really know anything. They just kill werewolves they think are dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I am going to assume that since they are secret and basically unaccountable for their actions, they don't have anything resembling fair trials much less forensic experts to make sure that they are being fair, in a definition of fairness that involves systematic death sentences. Joy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's at least... get more information before rounding them up with people that would hang skymages upside down," Felix says diplomatically albeit with little hope in his voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they mean well. They just don't care about killing to keep people safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think Derek would know why the hunters don't go public? I can guess the standard masquerade literature reasons why werewolves would keep things a secret, but I don't see why the hunters would. Keeping people safe usually improves when you tell them that there is danger. Or when the people facing the dangers have resources that you can only get when there are more people throwing money or personnel in your way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know! Maybe they like killing people and try to only kill dangerous ones."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris stares at Scott, one of his eyes twitch.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So... this is a world without magic, but it is very similar to our own from what we managed to gather research wise. It must have been so shocking to find out that werewolves existed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, you, sarcastic overlord one, let's go for a ride in my jeep. Nice peacemaker, you stay here with Scott while you wait for your friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris is about to reply to that, but Felix shoots a look and instead he says. "Alright then."

Permalink Mark Unread

And here they are. Stiles sits, assuming Fenris can let himself in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris does, the wings does make sitting a bit awkward but nothing he haven't deal with before.

"Do you want to ask me something without Scott being present?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did I talk to you on the phone or the careful one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was me. And I am not careless, but your friend was defending people that not only kill other people, but kill a class of people that he belongs to. It's hard not to get worked up on his behalf."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not saying you're careless. Not saying you shouldn't care. Just that Scott defends everyone, even the ones who've tried to kill him in the past week, and that he especially defends them from powerful strangers. He's worried about what you can do to us. All of us, everyone in this world, universe, or dimension."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris actually smiles. "That is great, actually, that Scott can care about the hunters that is. I know I come off as scary, I... am not the best at diplomacy. And I can understand the worry about your universe given our powers. I can't really offer much to help in that front, it's a reasonable worry given you don't know us that well. All I can do is not living up to your fears, being helpful, constructive and the like.

I realize it might have sounded like we wanted to hunt down the hunters for revenge, but we don't want that, we want suffering in this universe to decrease, if we could get hunters to stop killing by giving them a lot of money we would do that. It is just that the entire situation is very appalling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I get that. You're not the nice one, Felix is. I'm not the nice one, Scott is. That's how these things go. If you think Scott is being unreasonably passive or forgiving or whatever, talk to me first. And if I want to make snide remarks about the powerful aliens that want to change the world, I'll run them by you before insulting your brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What bothered me about Scott was not that he was willing to forgive, but willing to accept the status quo, like a character from a badly written story where people fail to look around the world to make it something that fits their wants better, or not even being aware of their wants. You can make snide remarks if you would like, it would actually bother Felix if you are holding them back, just... remember that he is the individual least likely to want to burn someone to death, while he also grew up with everyone knowing we had that ability and being afraid of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good for Felix. Look, Scott doesn't accept the status quo, but werewolves and hunters aren't like perps and victims, they're all bad guys, everyone is awful. Scott doesn't know how to handle awful people."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris nods. "I didn't expect to be clear cut, good versus evil, but what you two told us about the situation isn't reassuring regardless of moral standing of each side."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile...

"I don't know if I've properly introduced myself. I'm Scott."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Scott McCall, I know," Felix says but he extends a hand, "I am Felix Dalkaila."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you. I'm sorry I reacted how I did, I'm sure your brother means well. It's just kind of scary. The last few weeks have been like that for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you. And I understand, Fenris lacks people skills in general and they are bit worse today. How are you holding up, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stressed, but I think my life just got a lot easier, if your whole group is as well-meaning as you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are. I think Kato is going to be... less productively angry than Fenris, but he, Vera and Vii should follow our advice on how to proceed. At very minimum, your budget increased by a measure defined in cubic kilometers instead of currency."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell me about them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, Kato has a similar drive to improve things like Fenris and I do. He has been in a downer mood lately, but is usually friendly. Vera is very caring and copacetic, likes everyone to be comfortable an safe, she works for me. Vii is..." a dreamshaping-created emotionless spy, "very serious but also very loyal to Kato. They all are immortal skymages, but only we two have dreamshaping.

How about Stiles? Or Derek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stiles is very protective and paranoid. He loves to learn new things, and gets distracted easily. He doesn't really trust new people, but he thinks you guys are going to be a big deal and wants to know if I think it's worth trying to trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we are worth your trust, but me saying that isn't itself a proof we are worthy it. I know. And we do want to be a big deal, given the power we have it would be a waste of potential for good if we are not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With great power comes great responsibility?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, yes. Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm just not used to being dangerous, to being in danger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am so sorry, we are going to do our best to help you to deal with this whole mess."

Permalink Mark Unread

And in the very old but still functional jeep...

"I think that's probably enough for now. We should head back. Also, later we should compare world history."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, we did some superficial research and there were no big divergences so far," Fenris gazes out of the Jeep's window, "Our friends should arrive any moment now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I still kind of want to hear about alternate universe history, but alright. Later."

Permalink Mark Unread

And they leave the jeep to rejoin the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

When Stiles is about to close the house's door Fenris stops him.

"They are here."

Two young women and a man landed on Stiles front yard. They have wings too, one of the women have a pair of wings so small that they wouldn't be visible if she wasn't standing sideways to him.

"Hello," Fenris says, "everyone this is Stiles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey. Nice to meet all of you, sorry about the losing your friend bit. We're glad to have you, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

The man and short-winged woman looks at him a bit incredulously, the second woman looks neutral.

"Lets get inside so we can you introduce everyone in one go."

They walk inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

And there is the rest of everyone.

"Hi. I'm Scott, and you're already met Stiles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello. I'm Vera, pleasure to meet you," Says the one with very small yellow wings, she has brown hair and sounds very friendly.

"Kato," Says the one other male, his wings are pitch-black.

Fenris introduces the final one. "That is Vii, she is usually quiet," Vii nods in response, her hair is platinum blonde, her eyes are gray and her wings are white.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet everyone. I'm sorry you're stranded here, but I hope we find a way for you to be comfortable until you can leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

Vera thanks Scott and Kato nods, Vii remains neutral.

"So the situation is that Scott is a werewolf and there is an alpha werewolf making him hurt people. There are also hunters that are a vigilant group which murder werewolves that get out of line," the others are appealed, even Vii reacts, "We told them that we are immortal, dreamshapers and skymages, which caused them to be wary of us."

Kato snorts. "If you're the one that told them about our powers I can see why they would."

"They are impressive even if you do it nicely. Well, what can we do for you, Scott?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know. You sound powerful, but I don't think anyone here deserves to get hurt. Can you help us find the alpha? Will you heal people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will help. No one deserves to get hurt," Fenris says, "We don't have healing powers. Only our personal immortality."

"I think the only way for these two not helping with the alpha situation is if you physically restrain them," Kato comments with a smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I can make medical supplies and missing body parts if come to that and we manage to find a doctor."

"Or if you make one," Kato comments with a even bigger smirk.

"If come to that, I could make one, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can take away pain. If you can reattach body parts, I can at least do that much...and I know a doctor. He works as a veterinarian, but he can handle basic first aid for humans. And others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take away pain? I've never heard of werewolves doing that and since we are from different universes. What exactly can you do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is the veterinarian willing or capable of keeping things a secret if it turns out we show up bewinged at his doorstep? We get new bodies when the current ones expire, but it takes a week for them to grow again."

"Isn't his mom a nurse?" Vera asks.

"So," Kato turns to Stiles, "what is your deal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mom is a nurse, but she doesn't know about any of this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My deal? I'm his friend, that's pretty much it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, cool," Kato says neutrally.

"Apparently it has been a couple of weeks and he haven't got around telling her," Felix explains to Vera.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, Scott, Felix asked, what werewolves can do? You don't know of anything else besides the thing with pain and the super-strength?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pain, strength, senses, stamina, speed...nothing like you guys."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the face thing," Kato points out making an exaggerated frown and finger fangs.

"It sounds like we have advantage on combat that isn't close quarters, if it comes to that. Is the alpha only different because he can control Scott or is there something else?

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't really know how alphas work. I think he's bigger, stronger, and faster. But I don't know what he's capable of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about Derek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Derek is a beta, like me, but he has more experience. He was born a werewolf, not a human."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay. That sounds like a better source. How soon do you think we will be able to meet him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He mostly appears if he wants to talk. Shows up in my room and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

That elicits a confused surprised look from all of them, even Vii expresses a subdued raised eyebrow.

"Okay..." Felix says slowly, "Maybe we can leave a note attached to your window or door explaining the situation to him."

"Dear Derek," Kato says in a mocking tone, "Five extra-dimensional immortals showed up and want to talk to you. Insert contact information. P.S.: You are a creep."

"Any chance he is spying on you right now?" Vera asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Maybe. I don't really know much about him. Derek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

No answer.

He's probably not here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"C'mon, Derek, come out, I will give you a scoobie snack!" Kato says.

"Okay. Well, do you have a better idea than leaving a note where he is likely to see?" Felix asks Scott and Stiles, "I might be able to use my magic to track him down myself."

"It might be a good idea leaving me or Kato on watch tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He does have a house, near the edge of the woods. We can just go there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we do that now or it would improve things if we were better announced?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If we plan it he'll be more stubborn, I think. We should go now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, we will follow by wing. Do you want to introduce us and the entire concept of us first, or we should like just drop on him and be obviously winged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just drop. It's funnier."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, please introduce us to Derek, we will be circling above his house and then you signal us to come down or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'll probably take a few minutes to explain, which should put him in the right mood. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

They go, Kato has two try taking flight two times, but then they are flowing Stiles' jeep without a problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

They arrive at a house, near the edge of the preserve.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone is standing outside.

Permalink Mark Unread

The group will keep on flying until there is a signal that they should land.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, before you try to kill us, we have someone for you to meet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Two minutes. Then I kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Derek, there are some visitors to town and they can help us with a lot. They seem to be genuine about it. I think you should talk to them."

He just waves. It's not a very complicated signal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris and Vera float straight down, and remain hovering a few inches above the ground next to Stiles and Scott (just in case they need emergency rescue by flight).

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix and the other two land more conventionally and walk over to stand next to Fenris and Vera.

"Hello, Derek. I'm Felix Dalkaila, this is my brother, Fenris, and our friends, Vera, Kato and Vii."

No one offers a hand to be shaken, but no one is openly hostile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, why did you tell these people? What are you planning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought they could help. They wanted to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He wasn't planning anything. We are stranded in this universe, got here while trying to reach somewhere else, and we met this Scott, we know what he is going through and wanted to help. Sorry for droping so suddenly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Why would I trust someone who shows up claiming to be friendly and knowledgeable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, define trust? You shouldn't give anyone your undying loyalty under two minutes. To figure out where in the spectrum of trust we fall on it would be useful if you acquired more information, by means such as observing us and then analyzing the likely hypothesis that can explain your observed data. We actually don't know much, except that werewolves exist in this world and are secret and one is using Scott to hurt people. The five of us are immortal and have various powers, including the obvious gift of flight, weather manipulation and my own matter conjuration. We have the minimal moral impulses to dislike people being hurt and are likely capable to achieve that without it even being very costly to us, but we lack information on how your worlds works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Matter conjuration? How far does that go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is actually the ability to expand a pocket dimension, I am just very versatile on what I can put in it, I can do basically anything non-magical, given enough specification or time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are people non-magical?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People are non-magical, unless they're a kind of magical person already. I don't use that ability lightly, I can only create new people and they automatically like me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems easy to abuse. You've never thought about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Believe me, I know that is easy to abuse," his parents, arthur, their uncle, every person... "The first time it happened it wasn't under my control, and since then I only created another person once during an emergency."

Kato shifts nervously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Congratulations. Anything I can help you with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we know about Scott's situation and would like to help him. And we would like to understand how this new world we now live works and you are likely to be better informed about the situation than us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To give you some context," Fenris speaks suddenly, "the reason we got involved was that we were trying to reach another universe. The way our immortality works means that there is now another instance of Felix there, and we saw through magical means that Felix around another Scott, when we got here we didn't have a better clue besides Scott's name so we looked him up and talked. We don't have means to leave the universe, so we've decided to just make the most of it. If you are aware of means of inter-dimensional travel, we might be willing to negotiate."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, don't tell me you're taking any of this seriously?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they want to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not like you're offering anything useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell me how it goes. I'll be here when this falls to pieces, unless they decide to kill me first."

He goes inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris sighs. "Did I come too strong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would really like to know if his reaction is informative of how others will react to our honest information. We probably should hold back a bit, be more mysterious."

"This was such a waste of time," Kato complains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scott, Derek isn't being cooperative. Would you like to sleep at our place or offer other alternatives? Maybe Kato and Vii can keep watch over you, they don't need to sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you think that's safest, yeah, we should do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which one? Or you mean coming to our place and having the two stand watch? I guess is what we were supposed to do if you came."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Vera and Fenris can watch me if they're willing. I don't want to hurt anyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. I don't mind pretending to be Edward Cullen," Kato snorts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we can go grab your things at your place," Vera says to Scott then turning to Sties, "Would you like to come too, Stiles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'll have to cover with my dad and his mom. You three go ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, then they can go to Scott's place and grab his overnight stuff.

They don't even need to go there right away if Scott doesn't want to, but they won't mind. Vera and Fenris can easily show him the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott grabs his stuff!

He explains to his mom that he's sleeping over at a friend's house.

No, not Stiles. A new friend, from lacrosse.

And then he packs up his things, and they're ready to go.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they take Scott to a relatively anonymous but easy to find patch of forest.

Then Vera makes two globes of light and have them move clockwise... and there is a portal.

Assuming Scott steps in with them, he will find himself standing in front of a mansion that is at least five times larger than his own home, made of some red-brown stone and looking very luxurious indeed, the foyer is at least three stores tall and overdecorated with statues and paintings all over the walls, the effect is luxurious but a bit overhelming, there is fake (?) gemstones everywhere gemstones don't really belong. The lighting is provided by many elaborate sconces that hold torches instead of lamps.

"Welcome to our new home. Don't mind the decoration. Would you like anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'm okay. It's, uh, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, on behalf of Felix. The bejeweledness isn't his choice, it is something of a side effect. Also, fire doesn't harm here unless you hare pyrokinetic, which basically means Felix again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kato and Vii only need to keep an eye on you when the rest of us go sleep. Until then we won't stand guard closely, but we can keep you company if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry, that wasn't a disguised way to say that you are bothering us. We're delighted to help and be around if you need us. And we should pick your bedroom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does all this work? It seems complicated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you mean exactly?" Is Scott following them to pick a room to stay?

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can all do so many different things. How did this place come with you? Did Felix make it by himself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, they are assuming he is coming with them through the stairs and corridors, which are wide and tall, almost like they are designed for flying people.

"Felix made it. Created out of nothing to be more exact. He can expand while asleep and create it's portals. I can do it too, but mine is a vast frozen sea and far less hospitable to life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right. Important disclosure. I know it looks like it goes forever if you look to the horizon or the sky, but this place is finite. If you walk far enough, your surroundings will turn foggy and gray. If you continue you disappear and reappear later, maybe in here or maybe on Earth. But you might appear in a confined space that you can't get out of, so it is better not to do it unless you really need to leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't fly, but I'll be careful."

He follows, looking around in bafflement.

"I don't mind sleeping anywhere, as long as you guys can keep me there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have a place in the basement that should hold you, but we can give you a suite until you actually need to sleep. We might devise a more permanent solution once we've seen how tonight turns out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I should stay near you so when it's time, we're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should put a mattress on the basement, do we even have mattress that aren't skymage-sized?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes,I don't need the extra space for wings so mine could be used," Vera says, shaking her tiny wings to demonstrate why, then she turns to Scott, "don't worry we will keep you comfortable and maybe we won't even need to keep you downstairs every night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's better than hurting people. Do whatever you have to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, sure, but it doesn't means that we have to treat you badly while doing it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not if it is not useful. Would you mind we try chains tonight? The place we are going to put you in will have a metal door so it isn't that much of an extra precaution."

They find a bedroom and offer Scott the option of mattress or sleeping bag. Also, would Scott like to leave his things here or pick another room?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fine.

"Chains sound smart. I don't know how strong I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am pretty sure Felix is making you a set of chains and shackles that should hold you without harming your ankles and wrists."

Now that they have acquired the mattress they proceed to move it downstairs.

Scott is now walking through the corridors of a ridiculous mansion, accompanied by two winged people. Isn't his life weird?

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's nice of him."

Scott walks. He does not take a moment to appreciate how weird his life is getting, because it just keeps doing that. There's probably more.

Scott offers to help lift the mattress.

Permalink Mark Unread

They lift and bring the mattress to an empty storage room in the basement level.

"With that out of the way, is there anything you would like to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's too early to sleep. What do you guys do for fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We haven't shaken out a routine here yet and we can't do anything on the category of 'be in public' for long. But you know, reading, cooking, watching movies, flying - which is still quite novel for Kato and Vii - playing video games, listening-and-dancing to music," Vera shrugs, "wanna do any of those things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We also have facilities like a pool, despite being kinda of late, and a gym, I think we might have a sauna as well? We don't have proper internet access yet, but we have internal servers with a lot of reading material. No porn in case that would be what you would be interested to look at."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know why Fenris just mentioned porn but I bet everyone felt awkward about it," Kato says showing up by the basement's door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm okay without it, yeah. A pool could be fun, I've never really gone swimming much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me neither and I should re-learn it because of the wings," Kato waves his black-feathered wings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can teach you, Kato. Scott, want to borrow swim shorts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. This could be kind of fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

They acquire swim shorts and towels. The pool is large and cross-shaped with different depths, features like fountains, the water is heated to a pleasantly warm temperature.

Fenris method of diving is floating over until she is ten feet from the edge and then just drop like a stone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kato picks a shallow part then he tentatively and carefully sits on the border before diving in, experimenting swimming with the wings.

"This is weird, not bad, but weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott goes shallow at first.

He seems nervous.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm okay. I never really learned to swim, so I think I'll just...hang out back here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, differently from Fenris, I actually learned how to swim without wings. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he does learn how to swim without wings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do know how to swim without using them in case they got too damaged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Anyway, want me to teach you how to swim?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Scott is an eager student.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kato is a good teacher, at least in the sense that he actually can show Scott how to move his arms and legs properly, but Kato himself is having some trouble coordinating his own wings.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Fenris teaches Kato how to operate those, and ends up teaching Scott how to swim as well, eventually he gets out of the water and hovers over it while guiding the other two through the deepers parts of the pool

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott learns to swim!

And then night approaches.

"Uh, maybe we should start chaining me up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They both agree and they get out of the pool, Fenris helps them drying off by creating a hot wind around them. There are chains, Fenris confirms that Scott is okay with them, before shackling Scott's feet and hands. The door is closed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, I don't usually use chains before the third date, but do you want to talk? Get to know each other?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! I don't know if- I mean, I'm flattered, obviously, but that might be weird?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wound me. I just thought that since we need to babysit you for the night at least we could get to know you, talk and stuff, Vii is not the best conversational partner."

Vii, who has been reading a book looks up and rolls her eyes.

"Also you are werewolf in the house of five extra-dimensional travelers, we crossed weird a long time ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, we can talk. About what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I assume there is more to you than being a werewolf?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know. I play lacrosse, sort of. I work at the vet's office, to help out my mom with everything. I usually let Stiles talk me into wanderjng the woods looking for dead bodies. I think I want to become a nurse, like my mom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sort of? And are there many dead bodies for Stiles to find...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never made it off the bench before I turned, and now I made first line. I'm not sure that counts. I don't really play, I cheat. And, uh, there aren't that many, but his dad is the sheriff and he makes sure to hear about all the latest murders."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is not cheating unless there is a rule against werewolves playing. And, wow, seeking out bodies certainly is... a way to spend your time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have an unfair advantage. I don't want to win because of something I didn't do. I mean, I like to win, but being a werewolf wasn't hard work, or talent, just luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And is not the kind of thing you don't know how to turn off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could move slower than a human, or faster. Trying to get back to average is hard, slowing down is like...compressing, getting smaller. I can't just stop at a certain point, I have to keep pushing down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't think of a solution that isn't... well, not playing, but I also don't really understand the concern, there are people that are naturally stronger or faster for whatever reasons and I don't see why being a werewolf matter," Kato muses and then shrugs, "I am also not a sports fan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's partly because I worked so hard to get strong enough to play, and then...it doesn't really matter, it's just one of the things that's different now. I can't handle some soaps now, that's different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, what? Why you can't handle them? Are some soaps in this world made with silver?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My sense of smell is really strong, some soaps are just made out of the wrong stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right. That makes sense."

"Going to a locker room must be a nightmare."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The first time I went back to one Stiles made so much fun of me. I kept being surprised by how bad most of our teammates smelled. Besides Danny."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pfft, you must be a masochist. Danny was the only one that used deodorant or something more complicated?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, no, he just...I like his cologne, he smells nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does make a difference when the boy smells nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, uh, it does. Are we, are you staying with me the whole night? It can get a bit...hairy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kato snorts. "I can't promise we won't make a snack break, but neither me nor Vii sleep at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

After a few minutes he closes his eyes and starts singing softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that is certainly a intensely adorable werewolf boy and Kato will distract himself reading a history book about this world singular-world war two.

Permalink Mark Unread

And eventually, Scott falls asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing dramatic happens. He sleeps soundly.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is great! Kato will wake up Scott for breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morning. No problems?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"None at all! You slept peacefully the entire night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. Did you already make breakfast? Should I pay for the groceries?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We haven't yet," Kato opens the door and unshackles Scott, "and don't be silly the breakfast is on us. Felix can conjure food too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah, thanks. It's easy to forget how powerful you guys are. What are we having?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They are having many things, but pancakes are the main feature. Felix is teaching Vii how to make them. What Scott would like in his? Apple slices? Chocolate? Bacon?

Permalink Mark Unread

He's feeling like something sweet. Apple slices and chocolate?

Permalink Mark Unread

Apple slices and chocolate it is! The main conversational topic during breakfast is the differences between worlds (or the surprising lack of thereof), but Scott is free to introduce conversational topics less intellectually demanding than history and geopolitics.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott is not particularly knowledgable about either of those things. His interest seems to lie in how stormlords and humans of his world differ.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stormlords are human," Felix corrects him with the tone of someone that is not offended but wants to make it clear this is something offensive, "just humans with magic and we have humans without magic too. The term for non-magical people in our universe is 'Earthborn' or 'Earthkind', but those wouldn't make sense in your world, I guess."

And then Felix will happily chat away about Stormlord culture (with some help from a less enthusiastic Fenris). The Stormlands are named so because they experience a month of normal weather, then various elemental beings show up and cause continuous storms for a month, then go a way, rinse and repeat. So Stormlords organize themselves to counter the stormy weather. The culture is strongly influenced by this and there is a big focus on responsibility and taking care of your community, etc. On the darker side, due to the fact that Skymagery is genetic, arranged marriages are a also a thing, intended to optimize specific gifts on the next generation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does anyone know why the elemental beings...do that? Are they following instincts, do they know that weather affects people, can they think? I guess you might not know for sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No idea. Instincts might not even be the right word. They are likely a kind of magical construct following a set behavioral program."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are dumb and repetitive," Kato explains.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Scott talks about his world.

There are werewolves, and there are humans who hunt werewolves, and regular humans. He doesn't know much else about werewolves.

Otherwise, it looks fairly similar to their world.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed the world is very similar. They are very concerned with the whole hunting of werewolves. And the fact that werewolves are such unknown quantity, any chance Derek might be willing to listen to them again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hunters are terrifying! Derek is terrifying!

Scott goes on about this for a few minutes.

"I'll try to set something up, I'm just not sure he'll listen to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think seeing this place would help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. If he sees how powerful you are and that you're still nice, he might actually believe you on everything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's worth a try. And at least letting you spend the night worked this time around. Is your mother likely to check on you in the middle of the night? One thing we could do is have a portal inside your bedroom so you can pretend to sleep there. If you are okay with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She doesn't always check up on me, but it can't hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is great! They can set up a time and a place for the bedroom. Since it is going to have a portal to it, would Scott like a house on the other side? What Scott would like for his house?

Permalink Mark Unread

Something cozy. "Natural" light would be nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix can certainly do cozy and naturally lit, might sketch up something to show Scott later if they have the opportunity. Hopefully they will have time to get these plans approved later that day.

Permalink Mark Unread

And if Scott needs anything they are happy to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we be heading back soon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, right is education time for the ones among us that are plagued by that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been less focused lately. I should get back, try to pay attention in class. Same thing tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, don't worry and keep safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want a hug? You are going through a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! Group hug even!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. I'll see you guys after school?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, you can even bring Stiles if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll talk to him. What will you do? Do any of you normally go to school? Do you have jobs? I guess you don't need money as much with everything Felix does. The whole dimension thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are researching your world and how to best navigate it while not having a legal presence. We are going light on that because the whole werewolf business might take precedence once we have a better picture on how to move about it. The boys here finished high-school recently. Vera never went but got a GED. Kato's manages various family's business and properties while also managing the needs of a set of dreamshaping-created people. Vii is his bodyguard. Felix, Vera and I also manage another set of created people while also running a nonprofit that secretly uses Felix's powers. We can basically live off Felix's dimension without more standard modalities of work, yes. But money has it's uses and we might eventually sell some things just to have it in case of emergency."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can get you in touch with people for the legal presence thing. Can you, uh, explain more about the created people thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Dreamshapers don't start with control over the ability and sometimes this means they create people. Felix created several this, including Vera..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Daddy!" Vera hugs an embarrassed Felix.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris ignores this interaction and keeps explaining. "and some of the other dreamshapers created some too. We make sure every single one of them is provided for, please be reassured of that."

"They take this very seriously," Vii says, "Kato wanted to kill some of them, but the twins took them in instead and Kato didn't talk to them until the news of Felix disappearance."

Awkward silence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Thanks for explaining. I should get to school."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kato turns away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tact. I need to teach Vii tact." Vera mutters under her breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris and Felix exchange a look and then Fenris says.

"Okay. Let me lead you out."

Presuming Scott lets him do that, Fenris waits until they are out of earshot.

"Kato wasn't in his right mind at the time. He just had experienced being briefly reunited with his brother and then he was killed by their uncle, the people that Kato wanted to kill were... complicit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know the full story, but it's probably not my business. We don't have to talk about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are offering you protection, it makes this entirely your business if you don't feel safe around us. At minimum Kato would be hurt if you were under wrong assumptions. He is a genuinely nice person that went through a lot and wasn't in his right mind at the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can we do this later? I have to get to class."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." Fenris stops following.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once Scott is away Kato starts crying and apologizing.

The others comfort and reassure him.

Does Scott returns later?

Permalink Mark Unread

He does! He brought a friend.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the benevolent world leaders live here, huh? Pretty nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, I - one of the benevolent worlds leaders - made it myself. Would you like a tour of the place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love one. Scott, you already saw it, right? You can hang out with the others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, and Scott can discuss his house design with them if he wants. Do you want an aerial tour too, Stiles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really. Thanks for the offer. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris tours Stiles around, detailing Stormlord-culture things, like this statue of that famous skymage. Or that map of Dalkaila the twins' ancestors used to rule over it. There are lot of fancy things and the place decoration could be described as "tacky nightmare". None of the light-sources are electrical, every single one is fire based, which Fenris explains is safe since fire doesn't consume things here (he demonstrates this by poking a flame). This is the gym. This is the pool. This is the library. Does Stiles wants to see a skymage bedroom?

Permalink Mark Unread

Stiles seems excessively entertained by the tacky nightmare.

And he really can't resist an opening like that.

"I'll show you mine if you show me yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris snorts. "Normally, I would take you up on that. Actually, I don't care about wearing clothes so I would be okay with just me doing the showing. But Felix would probably be upset from a diplomatic point of view." He shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

He sputters vaguely, finally settling on:

"Thanks? We should probably start on the right foot. Can I see the bedroom in a totally diplomatic way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are welcome and of course. Usually people are just interested in the beds for some reason."

Fenris shows him the bedroom. The bed is huge and circular with a lot of pillows. The place looks neat and clean, with little signs of being lived in, which of course matches the reality.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty big. Who stays in here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The size is because of the wings. And this is my bedroom. I actually sleep in the air," Fenris floats unaided by his wings to illustrate this, "unless someone is over. I mean, no one has been over yet, this place isn't a week old, despite looking remarkable like my former bedroom, even the private balcony so I can be nude without bothering others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a nice room."

He coughs.

"Maybe we should see what the others are doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

The others are picking a new home for Scott. Keeping in mind that the place still has to be cleaned and maintaned, would Scott like a bigger house? A small but comfortable cottage? A pool?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kato is there but way more subdue than yesterday and avoiding making eye-contact with Scott.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Stiles would be interested in the discussion?

Permalink Mark Unread

Stiles proceeds to tell them exactly what kind of house Scott would like- a small cottage with a garden and a fireplace.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scott has less input than Stiles. He seems more interested in talking to Kato.

"Are you okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They take Stiles input and make notes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry about me. Did Fenris...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wasn't just what he said. It wasn't just about you. The idea of creating people and then...having to deal with them somehow, it's intense. A lot of responsibility, no matter what you do. I needed a minute to think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it is." Kato says and hoping no one mentions how Kato is one of those created people. A cheap copy. "Sorry, if it upset you either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine. I just hope I didn't ruin things, we were getting along and I want us all to work together without any problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am surprised that you are like... cool with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Making a person is sort of terrifying, but once they exist, there's really nothing to do. You have to make sure they're okay. I don't know what happened with you guys, and it's not my place to judge. We're okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kato was thinking about his desire to get revenge by proxy... okay, he is not going to clarify that. "It is a long story, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you can tell me about it sometime. Now, we should catch up with the others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," Kato says with a forced smile. He really doesn't want to unlock his tragic backstory.

"How is Scott's house design going? Did Stiles added something like a jacuzzi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't fit a Jacuzzi in that thing, it's tiny. I might sneak a snazzy, hi-tech computer in there for me, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, Stiles didn't realize that I could just, like, make them both a dozen computers each and all he has to do is ask. I mean, I wouldn't want someone else to notice but it is not a monetary problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How easy is it to make food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trivial. We are working out details on how to discreetly make donations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. Did you guys want to try to talk to Derek again, or was there something else you wanted to do first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talk to him now? We might want to, our current other plan is to basically see if I can find other werewolves, but it would involve a lot of privacy breaking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine. We'll talk to Derek, he might know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you think he will be up to it this time around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It can't hurt to try. He says he wants to help me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, yes, but I wonder what he knows it can't be that much if he hasn't told you already. Unless there is something he wants from you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He says he wants to teach me how to control it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He got bored of watering plants so he wants a pet werewolf."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which entirely reasonable, considering that werewolves are a secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much has he taught you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not much, yet. We haven't really talked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that is a good sign. It makes less likely that you would go berserk and appear on the news. Unless there is some masquerade-type conspiracy covering that... Anyway, I guess it is worth a try talking with Derek again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Should I set it up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please. Do you think it will go over better if he comes to us? We can create a portal and destroy it after his visit so it isn't dangerous for him to come once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He might like that? It's impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, he looked suspicious and showing power isn't really a incentive to make him suspicious. On the other hand, at least is a proof that some of our fantastical claims are true... I think he should come then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll bring him over, then. Should I do that now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you wouldn't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

So Scott goes to retrieve Derek.

Permalink Mark Unread

Presumably Stiles went with him. So the twins and co. will spend this time giving Kato reassuring hugs and get ready for their return.

Permalink Mark Unread

They return with a reluctant companion.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's really very reluctant.

He's boycotting this whole meeting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is he too reluctant to answer to a "Hello, Derek."?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello. So this is what you can do? It's impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, thank you. Would like something to drink?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you making it? I'll be fine without it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no trouble it's already conjured either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bring on the magic food."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay...

They bring the food, that isn't magic on itself, but it was magically created, high quality and tasty.

"So, we are trying to help Scott with the Alpha problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The alpha is dangerous, and Scott needs to learn control so it can't take advantage of him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Is there anything to help his progress?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He needs to be properly taught."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that hard to arrange?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't want to learn, even though he could be putting everyone he cares about in danger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Every time we talk, you do something threatening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened?" Fenris asks neutrally to them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing, yet. He just doesn't take the danger we pose seriously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was learning control just fine without you, and now they're helping me cover the gaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris raises a hand as a peaceful gesture. "I mean, why you, Derek, thinks Scott doesn't care about the danger he imposes on others? And Scott what do you mean with 'threatening'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Appearing in my room at night, the way he was hanging around Allison, the stuff he said about the alpha..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, Derek... why did you do those things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He needs to understand the danger. He could be attacked at any time, the alpha could go after his friends, or he could go after his friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I agree those are very terrible outcomes, but what is the point of appearing in his room at night?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who is Allison?" Felix asks Scott.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No point besides being creepy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had to show him how vulnerable he is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Allison is my girlfriend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you say other werewolves would've tried the same, Derek?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tried to teach him or tried to take advantage of him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant if they would've tried teaching him using that methodology, but that is also useful information."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I needed him to know it was serious, I thought I should just show him how easy it is for us to get anywhere we want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The majority of people wouldn't be more cooperative when their girlfriends are threatened like that. There is even an argument to be made where you shouldn't cave in to that kind of pressure, because it only reassures whoever is causing it to use it as source of power in the future."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the alpha could use that! These are all threats someone who wanted to hurt him would follow through on!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but even if they are a practical example of what the alpha could do. The end result when you do it is not likely Scott wanting to collaborate to you and your goals. The end result is Scott feeling threatened and being in the look out to minimize the ways you can influence his life in ways he disapproves of. Even if what you want is important."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could have just talked to me like a normal person!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do have to agree with Scott here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine. I'm sorry, I did this all wrong, but I was trying to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stiles claps mockingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, moving on. How does learning to control works and how long it takes? Where in the scale of 'fine after a couple of days' and 'he will struggle with this for years and years' are we talking about? How can we help besides what we already doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If he puts in the work, it should only take a few days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You already told me about anchors. What else is there to know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't use a person as an anchor. Can't you see how unstable that is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I can't. I think it can work for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

He scowls.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are anchors? Why a person as an anchor would be unstable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anchors keep them from transforming uncontrollably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An anchor should be internal; an emotion or a memory. A person is unreliable because you can't control yourself, you need someone else to do it for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Scott, why did you pick a person then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't pick her, it just happened. What does this have to with me learning control, anyway? It's working, obviously he doesn't know what he's talking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It is in fact not-obvious if he doesn't know. Derek, how long have you been a werewolf? Or rather, where did you learn the anchor trick?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been a werewolf my entire life, and if you don't want my help, that's fine, Scott. When all of your friends die, don't come running to me."

He attempts to storm off, but can't actually figure out how to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix does not literally thinks Scott was wise ignoring Derek's advice, but wow, he can see Derek doesn't make it easy.

"Derek, we can conduct you outside no problem. Do you mind if one of us asks questions on the way out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I don't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenris accompanies Derek.

"Would you mind if we contacted you to ask werewolf-related questions in the future? I think we have a easier time helping Scott."

Permalink Mark Unread

When they are out of the room, Felix starts saying "Okay, Scott. I get that Derek is... not the most diplomatic person, but I'm not entirely sure is wise to outright ignore him. Why haven't you tried to find another anchor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might be better. Can I ask you something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was an accident. I don't know how to change it, and I don't even know if you can."

Permalink Mark Unread

Stiles approaches Vera.

"So what's the plan, exactly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can definitely ask anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that is one thing we could've asked Derek. I do think the instability is concerning. Is it Allison, right? Or your mother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For tonight? I think we're going to watch a movie from your world, but Kato is in a mood and Vii is a mood because she caused Kato's mood. So I don't know. Of course there is the whole 'keep Scott safe' business as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's Allison. Can we talk about something else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A movie should be good for him. Do you need help picking something out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you rather. I don't wish to make you uncomfortable, but we should pick this conversation later, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We would appreciate movie recommendations."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you guys have Star Wars? Scott here still hasn't seen the original trilogy, so I think it's time we remedied that."

Permalink Mark Unread

The man said to ask anything.

So he asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll sit through your low-budget space fights if I have to. We could watch something else, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We in fact do, but I've never watched and I don't think the twins will mind watching again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. As soon as Fenris gets back we can watch the glorious space battles."

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes a while and Felix suggest they start the movie since Fenris won't mind anyway.

But eventually, Fenris is back.
