Elsewhere Nova arrives at a different kind of temple
Permalink Mark Unread

The Vaesteri family was among Milirevi's most important families. For generations, they've put their sorcerous prowess at service of the city and in the name of the Daliath religion. Their contributions were so notorious that they earned multiple awards and titles for it. Including the Dal-kanan-Dal (the blessing that multiples blessings), an honor granted to a single digit of families around the known worlds. The family ran a temple that was large, beautiful, a historical landmark, and a shelter to those in need.

Permalink Mark Unread

And need a shelter he does, if only for a little while. He's been running since he realised he could escape his last master, and he just needs to stop, take stock, and figure out what his next move is. He keeps his head low, trying to avoid notice, looking for somewhere he can just...be. And preferably avoid other people - safe or not, he doesn't want to have to fight here, or do anything else, but he will. If he has to.

Permalink Mark Unread

He finds himself in a large mess hall. There are people milling about... some are fully-augmented, but those are all sitting at a table by themselves.

Near the door there are three indentical boys that look his age, two of them notice him coming in and take a step towards him. The one with a clipboard smiles a friendly smile and asks. "Hello, welcome to the Vaesteri Daliath Temple. Are you seeking help and assistance?" the words sound memorized and his speech is understandable but accented.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates before he responds, judges the best response. (He's looking for a threat, looking to see what they want.) "Just a place to rest for a while, sir," he replies, keeping his eyes lowered.

Permalink Mark Unread

He speaks in a very soft, soothing voice. "We can certainly help with that. Come in. What's your name? I'm Feliaris Vaesteri."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They call me Parafi, sir," he states. (And waits, because he knows what that means, what the implications are, and more than one person took that as an implicit offer, when all it was was an answer.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks. "Pa-ra-fi? he repeats slowly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The other triplet glances his way. "I'm pretty sure that's the word for 'bed warmer'."

Permalink Mark Unread

The triplet that wasn't looking his way turns around. "Also, the slang for cheap prostitute."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. There went the hope of them not knowing the language well enough. Still.

"It's accurate enough," he says smoothly, shifting ever so slightly, and there's definitely an inviting and suggestive tone to his words.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ha..." the sound is so insincere and awkward that he doesn't even bother with a second 'ha".

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, my dude, we are not interested. So, sorry, but not sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

He lowers his gaze again. Murmurs something that might be 'you'd be the first', and doesn't seem quite sure what to do next. (He doesn't really want to have to fight anyone right now, he just wants to rest.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway," He says like he is trying to erase the last minute. "Why don't you come inside and we can find you a place?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, he can still follow an order - even if it isn't exactly worded as one - and he nods slightly. "-yes sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Feliaris walks inside while his brothers stay by the door. "Have you ever sought shelter in a place like this? Do you know the procedure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head. "Sorry, sir, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay. I will walk through it."

They approach a desk with a young man. He gives Feliaris a barely disguised look of disapproval. "What can I help you, young Vaesteri?"

"Uh, just Feliaris. Where are the forms for admission? I need one for Parafi here."

"Sure," the man says with a snort, "just be sure to get his actual name."

Permalink Mark Unread

He clenches his fist, because okay, it's not much of a name, but it's the only one he ever remembers having.

"And if that is my real name, sir?" he asks, low, intent, and just the tiniest bit arch. (He almost offers to show this man why it's his name, but...)

Permalink Mark Unread

The man's face falls. "Uh... that's... I'm sorry for what your parents did that to you."

Feliaris is slightly interposing himself between the two. He rest a hand on Parafi's shoulder. "That's enough," he says looking at the other man.

Permalink Mark Unread

...He has no idea how to respond to that apology.

The hand on his shoulder, however, gains a burst of heat, a warning, not an actual attack. (Not yet, but threatening to turn into one.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Instead of heating up, the hand is covered in a bubble of force that throws it away from the shoulder. Feliaris is confused. The other man jumps up and his chair fall to the ground. "...Oh, I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi flinches, as the hand is thrown from his shoulder, and the chair falls to the ground. He doesn't want to fight, but-

But he will if he has to. He just wants to be left alone. (It's not really a conscious thought or effort that has flames lighting around his hands.)

"I just want to rest," he says, and he doesn't sound combative, he sounds exhausted, and lost.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have touched you. Look, why don't you put the fire out and I will help you find somewhere to stay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a moment where it doesn't look like he's going to, where he stands, breathing too fast. And then the flames flicker out, Parafi watching Feliaris suspiciously, like this might be a trick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris relaxes a bit. He offers a chair for Parafi to sit.

(The other guy sneaked away.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He perches cautiously on the edge of it, ready to spring from it if necessary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I again, want to apologize for touching you. Should I assume that you don't like being touched at all or it's more complicated than that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi gives a confused blink. "People- don't really touch me. Unless..." he trails off uncertainly. Because they said they weren't interested. And the boy opposite him doesn't seem to want to fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "That's not really a concern here. We check everyone's behavior. Every worker that is."

Permalink Mark Unread

And that's a look of disbelief. "As you say," he agrees placidly anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not really following protocol, but I do feel like asking... what do you need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a blank, confused look. "Somewhere- quiet?" he says. "I just- need to. Make a plan." Which he has no idea how to do that. But.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "That can be arranged. We can even offer your alternatives if you need them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...alternatives?" he asks tentatively. (He's never had anyone offer him 'alternatives' before.)

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods and gives him a reassuring smile. It's quite charming. "Alternatives to - in general terms - improve their lives. Finding work that matches their skill or learning opportunities. Or ways to resettle somewhere. Also emotional or... spiritual counsel."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's silent. "I- can't do much. Fight. Fuck." 'All you're good for. Useless if you can't do this.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh..." he is trying to not to sound corny, "that doesn't mean that's all you can do. Or that you can't learn new things and leave that life behind you as much as you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes a sound that would almost be amused if it didn't have an overtone of resignation. "I-" shakes his head. "No point, waste of resources."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That... is very altruistic of you. But we are one of the best equipped temples in the continent. And very well-connected. Even if all we can do is hosting you for a few days and give you a ticket to somewhere else. And that's not the only thing we can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

...what does 'altruistic' even mean?

Still. He shakes his head. "Just need a place to rest." He knows he's repeating himself, but he hadn't thought this far ahead. Had just done, and got here and-

And didn't know what happened next.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright... Are you going to literally pass out? If not, we can just get some basic, security-oriented, questions out of the way and lodge you somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine, sir," he states surely. (He's gone longer on less...everything, sleep, water, food.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." He makes a general check on all questions instead of picking up the paper. "Where are you from? Are you a sorcerer and-slash-or an Efrossian?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Efrossian," he confirms, but hesitates. "I- was told that at least one of my parents had to be a sorcerer."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. The phrasing is... not that surprising given all the other signs. "Do you have any gifts or ritual training?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I. Um. Fire? Actual fire, not just heat."

The other things aren't relevant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As a breath gift? And nothing else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks away, considers nodding and letting them believe that. But-

But if he has to use his flames they're bound to notice the difference.

"I- no. Stamina, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have fire creation for breath," he adds conversationally, not looking intimidated at all, "The place is fireproofed, but please don't use your fire to intimidate people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't," he says glibly. (Except, it won't be to intimidate people, it'll be because he needs to fight, and hurt and make people leave him alone.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "I don't know if we have a fireproof collective dorm. But if we do, do you have a preference to room alone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He twitches ever so slightly, and there's perhaps a suggestion that he would definitely prefer a room alone, but...

"Whatever's easiest, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright... let me see, ah, any special needs? Medically? Allergies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head, more because he doesn't know the answer to those questions than because he's certain the answer is 'no'.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I will make arrangements. Anything you need from me before I go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Not unless you wanted something from me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No... thanks. I will be back soon."

He departs (flees?) the room, which is more like an open nook with walls and furniture giving some privacy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova stares after him in mild confusion, not...entirely sure what to do.

But. But he's been left alone, and-

He slides off the seat and tucks himself behind it, dropping his head onto his knees and...waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi might notice people coming and going. Including someone's whose footsteps indicate they stood around the corner for a moment before turning away.

Soon, Feliaris is back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Followed by a woman with a politely pleasant smile.

"Hello, Parafi. I'm Feliaris' grandmother, Dal-Yora Vaesteri."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is very aware of the people around him, especially the person who loitered nearby, and he's tense(r) until they've gone.

He unfolds from where he's crouched as Feliaris returns, and bows, not straightening. "I- at your service, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likewise. We can set you up in a moment. We just need to get a couple other things out of the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...ma'am?" he asks. There's no confusion, but there is mild resignation, and perhaps a hint of warning that he will fight if he needs to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her eyebrow raises ever so slightly at the tone. "First. You and everyone sheltered inside this hallowed walls are under our protection both from external and internal dangers. No one here is allowed to harm you."

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds...false, and wrong (and no-one's ever cared about 'allowed' before), but...

"As you say, ma'am," he agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Second. Because of the first point we can't let the people under our protection to hurt each other. Feliaris is warded, so there was no harm done there and he shouldn't have touched you. But the rule applies to you too."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Damn. Damndamndamn.

"I understand, ma'am," he says, bowing slightly more. "I won't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Follow us, we will show you your accommodations."

The two start leading Parafi through corridors and a couple of flight of stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova follows obediently after them, keeping his eyes lowered, and tracking everyone around them.

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case he will be led to an bedroom with two mistmatched bunk beds.

"The room is fireproof. No one is using this room at the moment and we don't have plans to move anyone in. You can rest now and go look Feliaris or one of his brothers when you get hungry or need a change of clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

He bows again, low. "Thank you, ma'am," he murmurs. "I am in your debt." (There's an offer of payment there.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome and there is no debt for you to worry about."

Permalink Mark Unread

...He's not going to call her a liar to her face. Everything has a price. Instead he repeats his bow, and hopes they'll leave him alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris smiles brightly. "Rest well." And they leave him be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova tugs the blanket off one of the bunks, wraps it around his shoulders, and curls up under it. He just needs to rest, he can...he can figure out a plan after he's slept.

So he sleeps. (Restlessly, and on edge, on guard for anyone coming in.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elsewhere the Vaesteri talk.

"You didn't mention that we knew that he was lying about not having other powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made a guess... He is very obviously on the edge and I don't think he is believing us. Telling him that we knew wasn't a priority and would only make him more stressed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaaand it's much better if we find out that we have been lying by omission."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell the truth if he asks." Dal-Yora says just a tad exasperated. "Just let him have his rest first. It's bad enough that your brother provoked him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

The other two brothers...

Permalink Mark Unread

...give her extremely unimpressed looks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which causes Dal-Yora to reconsider saying. "You're not supposed to apologize to me."

Instead she, honestly, changes her mind and says. "Everyone makes mistakes. You managed to salvage the situation quite nicely."

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi doesn't sleep for long (he never does, survives on fits and spurts of rest grabbed whenever he can).

He lies awake for a little while, staring at the bottom of the bed above him. His stomach reminds him he hasn't eaten in... Too long. And he could-

But he isn't managing to plan anything, can't seem to fit his head right around the idea that he needs to make decisions now. He takes a deep breath, and slides from under the bed, remaking it quickly. Then he heads for the door, pausing to see of he can sense anyone in the immediate vicinity.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one immediately on the other side of the door. Three people in a room diagonally across his (he does remember that there is no door in that the section of the wall so the room opens to a different area) and another person down the hallway, near the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

...alright then. He'll venture out. He keeps himself small, unnoticeable, and makes his way back towards the main hall.

Permalink Mark Unread

The person at the stairs notices him. "Hey, you're awake. Granny wanted me to show you around."

Permalink Mark Unread

He goes briefly still and then nods. "Yes sir," he agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is sure a tendency to go still very often. "Okay... call me Teronmas," he says in a tone that's very obviously trying to be soothing, "do you need anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He considers for a moment. "I could- use a little to eat? If that's- not a problem?" (See him, not calling Teronmas 'sir', even if it sounds like he wants to add the word.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. I will show you the kitchen."

He starts leading Parafi down.

"So, first time visiting Milirevi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," he gives a slight bow as he follows.

"Mm. Yes? I think so. I- never really knew. Where I was." He winces as he admits to that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You traveled a lot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs slightly. "Went where I was taken. Didn't always see much." (That he wasn't supposed to be fighting or destroying.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Because that's...what they wanted? What they told me to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay..." Even he is not tactless enough to ask clarifications. He just clenches his fists.

Hey, here is the kitchen. Currently empty. "So, what sort of things do you usually eat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Whatever's easiest, sir?" he says, not quite submissively. "I eat what I'm given."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." He looks Parafi up and down. "I will grab you the large plate."

He does that and starts grabbing food. He throws a pear for Parafi to nom while he assembles a sandwich.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...the pear would be fine, sir, thank you?" he says, a little perplexed. But he does nom the pear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Teronmas," he corrects, "you don't like sandwiches? If you get full really fast you can just take it back to your room and eat it later. Heat powers must be convenient for that sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks. He has never had so much food that that's ever been a thing. "As you say, sir," he agrees - which might give the impression of the fact that he's never done that sort of thing before.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call me Teronmas, or Thomas. 'Sir' is my dad back on Earth."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a brief, frozen pause as he tries to process that and then: "...I will, try to remember your preference, s-Teronmas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great." He piles up more food on the plate.

Permalink Mark Unread

...That seems like. A lot of food. Even if they intend for it to feed him for a while. His eyes are wide, and he doesn't argue. (He feels like he should, but he isn't really sure how to argue, and he's been told he can't fight.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas is piling up more food. Though at this point he might just be distracting himself by making a food pyramid.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- si- Teronmas? I- you don't have to-" He steps forward slightly. "I'm sorry?" he offers quietly, barely resists sinking to his knees, because right now he needs food, and he doesn't want to distract and-

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? Oh. You don't actually have to eat that much."

Permalink Mark Unread

...That's good at least.

"Then why-?" he starts. (are you giving me that much?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "It's not like you don't look like you need it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am...grateful, for your indulgence," he admits. "But this will be- more than sufficient." (For the next week if the food keeps.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh, bon appetite then."

He stops the pyramid pile up and instead plays with some telekinetic ability to manipulate objects as long an object is touching a chain of objects he is also touching. He creates a tower of grapes in the palm of his hand that way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi meanwhile, eats what he can, observing the display from the corner of his eyes. He vanishes some of the less perishable items into his pockets without seeming to. But eventually he's full, and he sets the plate to one side.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he moves, graceful and smooth, and not quite into Teronmas' personal space. "Let me thank you?" he breathes, inviting and submissive (and tired and resigned), sliding smoothly to his knees.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas takes several steps back.

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes himself smile. "Dude, stand up. I get that I'm irresistible and everything. But I'm not interested."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hesitates, and then rises with the same grace he descended. There's definite confusion, and-

"I- will admit I do not understand what is expected of me here," he admits. "The rules seem...different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I sure hope they are. And I'm not entirely sure what do you mean with expecting things from you, but I will take a wild guess and say that the answer should never be sex for food and shelter."

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives a shrug that is far too tight to be as unconcerned as it tries to be. "It is hard to argue with a thing that has always been."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

...Confusion.

"I- I'm sorry?" he offers, with no other thing he can think to say.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not angry at you. I'm angry on your behalf... Are there more people in your situation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "I- likely? I don't- know. But we were...disposable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Again, not angry as you. Okay, do you know where are they now? I think we should contact- whoever in this planet is responsible for human rights protection."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am...unsure," he admits. "It was not- something I felt I needed to consider, except to be where they are not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, how long ago did you escape? Do you think you could retrace your steps if we gave you a map or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not long," he murmurs. Thinks. "I- maybe? Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He drops his head, shrugs a little. "-I'll try," he agrees. (It's so little, in return for what they've given him, it's the least he can do.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you alright, dude?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yes?" (There's 'why would I be anything else?' and 'why would you care?' mixed up in that single word.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, you don't look so chill right now. Which, reasonable, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs. "I- am fine? Better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Well, at any rate you don't have to ever see those people if you don't want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

...He knew that. He would run before that had to be the case. He would die before that if he had to. They'd taught him to fight, forced him to, and- and then he'd turned that against them, and they wouldn't have him back. (Except he wasn't sure he could fight them again if they tried.)

"I- as you say, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't mention it. Do you want to know the rest of the facilities?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If that's alright, please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case will show him around. They already saw the mess hall and kitchen. Here is the courtyard (there are people milling about). That section over there is a Sports court's, Teronmas is not sure what the girls are playing (but it's a fairly common game around these parts).

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi seems more on edge around other people, but he looks around somewhat curiously, and maps his surroundings. He watches the game, but doesn't seem massively interested.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. This part can be called the temple proper, the main worshiping area with the central altar and small historical museum over here. Next to that there is a space dedicated for classrooms and workshops.

Permalink Mark Unread

He continues to be attentive as he's shown round, building up his mental map. He'd probably be more curious about the museum, classrooms and workshops if he thought they were likely to be of use to him, but right now, he still mostly doubts they will be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, this part between the actual temple and the classroom contains the libraries. One for kids, another for the classes and a historical library that's most a small extension of the museum, plus some sorcery texts (behind glass panels).

Permalink Mark Unread

This gets a more...immediate, awed response, although he still does his best to hide that. (He wants to be able to read, badly, but...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww, that`s nice. "As long the doors are unlocked any residents can pick out books."

Permalink Mark Unread

He starts to glance sideways (why would Teronmas think that was at all relevant to him?) , catches himself, shrugs slightly. "That's nice," he notes blandly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which, includes you, at least if you want to stay long enough to read something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Perhaps," he agrees, a little thoughtfully. (Maybe he'd be able to find a book that would teach him?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas remembers something about the training he received. "We have a bunch of classes, including how to read or write in various languages."

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks, looks sideways. "Ah, um. As you say," he agrees. (That still feels too much like not earning something.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas shrugs. "In case you decide to stick around longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hums quietly. "Thank you, si- Teronmas," he says after a quiet moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You welcome, dude. Lets move on with the tour." Here is a living space for game, television and radio. It's currently packed with people, mostly families.

Permalink Mark Unread

...that sure is a space full of people. He stills briefly, scanning the room automatically for threats, and then shifts his stance some, defensive but also not a threat, not a threat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some people look their way. Some people even look at Parafi with what might be considered a challenging look... but no one stares at him for more than a second. Most prefer to look at Teronmas with looks that range from challenging, to deferential and even happy. Teronmas waves at a couple of kids.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi observes this, almost curiously, but does his best to maintain the appearance that he isn't a threat. (He needs this sanctuary too much right now to risk breaking their rules.)

He'll admit to being a tiny bit charmed (and envious) of Teronmas' brief interaction with the children, but he doesn't show it obviously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Another child waves at Teronmas and at Parafi.

Teronmas leads him to a side building where the clinic is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi gives half a cautious wave back, and continues to follow Teronmas.

He hesitates when he realises this is a clinic, "I- am fine?" he says quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't say you weren't? It's just part of the tour."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh, okay." That...does in fact make sense. He nods sharply.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I should give you directions on how to move around the city, most adults got those, but I'm not the best source of those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I did okay getting here," Parafi says. (Which is not necessarily a ringing endorsement of his ability to navigate the city as a whole.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is itself a small miracle giving this city's urban planning literally caused citizen uprising in the past."

Permalink Mark Unread

...

"What, really?" Parafi asks before he can stop himself, and then goes still in place of flinching.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup! The dangers of an upper class with too much magic in their hands. Someone tried to give the city a hexagonal grid and someone then tried to undo that, among other things. The residents felt their lives and lifeforce was not being properly managed so they took the people responsible and..." He makes a hand slicing the throat kind of gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi pauses for moment, and then smiles, a not entirely pleasant smile. "Good for them," he decides. (Because really, had he been all that much different when he decided to run?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, that's the spirit. Sadly, that still leaves us with a maze of a city to navigate." He thinks. "What sort of places do you want to know how to reach?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi shrugs a little, considers. "Maybe somewhere I can find work? And-" Pauses, considering. "Somewhere I can just...be outside? That isn't just the street?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He answers the second question first. "Does a park works? Or does it need to be away from people? ...A park might be a better still." Then he pauses. "What sort of work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Park? -Yes, yes that'll be fine."

He has to think for a moment before he shrugs. "Good at fighting, manual labour, that sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, it isn't sex work... which Parafi might just not admit anyway if questioned. "Not a lot of opportunity for fighting. Definitely opportunity for various sorts of manual labour at the docks and around the portals. ...They rarely need help refrigerating the products, but I hear that Efrossians are well liked for the free temperature regulation in hot days."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods thoughtfully. "Thank you. I'll- try those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome. There is someone should help us figure out where you can find work." He pauses to think for a moment than leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, and follows along, a silent shadow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas leads him to an older woman that wants to know Parafi's skills.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, there's...not really many of those. Heavy lifting, fighting, setting things on fire, the temperature thing that was a part of him.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is not much need of fighting around these parts. Security is a thing, but typically it involves more of a background check (or legal presence at all). Plenty of heavy-lifting things, she will find something. They mostly have things on a day-to-day basis with vans to transport people to that day's job.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can do that! When and where does he need to be for those vans?

Permalink Mark Unread

Four in the morning. They leave through that back entrance over there.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can be there for that. He doesn't need that much sleep (he doesn't say). He thanks the woman for the information.

Permalink Mark Unread

The woman replies with a curt nod.

"Alright, is there anything you want to do now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs a little. He's not used to having this much free time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What usually you do in your free time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a look of pure confusion. "Free... Time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, sorry, I forgot about your... kind of situation. Uh, is there anything you wanted to do? For fun or whatever?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Read," he says without thinking, and then flinches, because he can't.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah... that would take a while to learn, but you're welcome to stay. And now I am wondering if there is magic for straight up literacy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- know," he admits, ducking his head. "I- don't-" shakes his head slightly. "Don't want to take up your time, or be in the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, my job is having time taken by you and have you on my way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh- I- there's not- someone who needs your attention more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay," Parafi agrees, although he seems entirely confused by the idea of somehow being more important than anyone or anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a problem? And do you want me to figure out a spell or extend your stay and get you reading lessons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- no," Parafi shakes his head. "I- I'm fine."

Considers, bites his lips. "I- either, whatever's easier. I-" He doesn't exactly have plans, although he doesn't want to be in debt to anyone, even if he already is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas... decides not to push the issue too much. For now. "Okay, I can check the library for a literacy ritual... it's probably related to translation and I know where to find spells for those in our private library. Do you want to come?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If- that's okay?" he agrees quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. Easier that way because I can cast the spell on you right away."

Permalink Mark Unread

He inclines his head. "As you say," he agrees - and that sounds more genuine than any other time he's said that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Baby steps. Teronmas leads through another set of stairs that goes up to the Vaesteri's residence proper. Is a very nice place, obviously old, but renovated and taken care of. Nicely furnished and decorated. Teronmas leads him through an office and then a private library.

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows, but keeps himself small, especially when they enter what is obviously a private residence. He's doubly careful not to touch anything here, keeping his hands tucked neatly behind his back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can take a seat." Teronmas says pointing at a fancy armchair. "This might take a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks a little startled at that, and uncertain, but obediently perches himself on the edge of the chair. (Still being oh so careful not to risk anything that might dirty or damage it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas pages through various books. "Uh.... I am not really finding anything that does permanent literacy. There are some long-ish term translation options that might deal with it, but they would take a longer time to prepare. Do you want a temporary effect to see if it works?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He...isn't sure, and that's fairly obvious. "I- whatever you think best?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lets start with the small test first. Are you good at setting up rituals according to instructions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, sir," he nods. (He was good at following instructions. And sometimes his masters had required him to do this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case he and Teronmas can set things up in the ritual room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is focused and careful as he follows the instructions, but also very efficient at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a very good trait for ritual casting! And eventually they have it all set and after some magical words are spoken while some crystals are held.

Then Parafi feels lightheaded following by feeling like the opposite of that and then back to normal.

Teronmas offers a book cover for Parafi to test the effect. It worked, reading feels weird, but he can understand the meaning behind the letters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi stares at it in quiet amazement, a small, genuine smile winding its way onto his lips.

"I- thank you," he says fervently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome! Is there anything you want to read?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still staring at the cover of the book. "I- I don't- I never thought- I don't know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, fair point. Maybe a short story collection? ...I am sure we have something with Efrossian tales if you're interested in your heritage and everything." He turns around and searches the bookshelves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, either? Both? Whatever's- easiest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right." Choices are hard. Poor guy. "Okay. I will grab a collection of short stories from here and then you can look at the library downstairs for more. Uh, the spell is going to fade, but we can then do the longer lasting version."

Permalink Mark Unread

He glances around this library. "I- is it- okay to-?" he makes a small gesture at their surroundings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. These books are warded enough that's okay for me to lend them to you. As long you don't take away from the temple. I don't think the books downstairs are likewise protected. So take care. Report any damage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes, sir- Teronmas, of course. Thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, dude!"

Teronmas can't locate the Efrossian book. But he locates one about Daliath tales and then leads Parafi to the public library downstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still very grateful, and follows eagerly, a faint smile on his lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great! Library is where they left it. Teronmas points at the reading area and then goes to search for more things that Parafi might want to read.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is cautious to sit there, worried he's breaking some unspoken rule. But he does - he was, a little, instructed to - and settles down to read. (It's strange, and wonderful and how does he pay them back?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas comes back with a handful of books. "Are you planning to stay here for the next while?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- uh. If that's- okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't get okay-er than reading at a library."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- then yes," Parafi nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Are you okay if I leave you for a while? If you need me, it should be easy to find me or one my brothers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, that- that's fine. Don't- let me keep you?"

(Parafi is, perhaps, a little more focused on the book in his hand than what he's saying.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good for him. Teronmas leaves him be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, Parafi is probably not going to move from where he's curled up until someone tells him he has to, too busy avidly devouring the books Teronmas found him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then that will keep Parafi entertained.

A kid swings by, sees the pile of books and then starts arranging Parafi's book pile. From thickest to thinnest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi notices the kid the minute he appears, but to begin with just observes him from behind his book. After a moment, he steels himself a little, tilts his head. "Hi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am helping!"

Permalink Mark Unread

...He is hopelessly out of his depth here. But-

"Yeah," he agrees with a small smile. "You are." Beat. "Uh- do you- help often?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup." The kid says and arranging the book pile according to some inscrutable but precise angular principle.

Permalink Mark Unread

He watches for a moment longer. (Happy, really, to see the kid so comfortable, even if he isn't entirely cognisant of that emotion or what it is.) After a moment he speaks again: "How're you arranging them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not-to-fall-ness!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good way," Parafi agrees. "...wanna teach me how?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The kid nods. "You have to make the weight be all the same over all around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm. I can try to give you a hand? You might need to keep me right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno, do you shake?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- don't know what that is." Parafi deflates a little at that.

Permalink Mark Unread

The kid stares at him and then raises a hand and starts shaking it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- no?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. The kid shows how to to balance the books.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Parafi is attentive and picks it up fairly quickly!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can do that, until someone calls the kid away. A woman that's likely the kid's mom. Her hands shake visibly even from a distance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi watches, a little sadly. He hopes they'll be okay, but he's not sure what he could do to help. He just thanks the boy for teaching him and bids him goodbye.

Then he'll go back to reading.

Permalink Mark Unread

The books are there for him! So reliable, these books.

One of the triplets - they don't use identical clothes, so Parafi can tell it isn't Teronmas - approaches. "Is everything alright, Parafi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks up, a little startled. "I, uh, yes, sir. Ter- Mr Teronmas said it was okay to read?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is okay to read. And Teronmas went out on an errand, but he did mention that you're under a temporary literacy spell."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I- yes, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want the less temporary version?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi brightens slightly. "I- if that's okay? Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. Are you okay with pausing your reading?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He pauses, hand lingering on his book. "-I can come back to it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not to bookmark the books by folding the corner or similar damage, but yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll remember where I was," Parafi states with surprising surety. "But yeah. Now is good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, follow me. And I am Fenrad, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows, and nods. "Pleased to meet you, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likewise. Are you finding the Temple comfortable so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. It's- peaceful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fitting." Fenrad comments absently. They are back at the Vaesteri's place of residence again.

Permalink Mark Unread

And again, Parafi makes it blatantly obvious that he is being very careful not to touch anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dal-Yora crosses them down the hallway, talking to a secretary looking person, she waves. The two are clearly Too Busy for Small Talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Oh. Good. He doesn't have to try and make his way through that then. But look at him being very well behaved and not attacking anyone or anything.

He hopes they aren't going to be here for long.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is no need to be nervous." Fenrad says while they set up the ritual.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- um. Not used to- any of this, sir," he gestures around at the Vaesteri residence in all its grandeur.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Yeah, I guess it has that effect. I don't know the details of why you're worried, but they are not really warranted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes. As you say."

Finishing off ritual preparation?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. The ritual itself takes longer than the previous one. But isn't meaningfully harder.

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows any instructions he's given, quickly and efficiently, eager for this to be done.

(His mind quietly reminds him that payment is going to be due...)

Permalink Mark Unread

And done. It feels very much like the same. "There."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I really am very grateful, sir," Parafi says, stepping a little closer, half waiting for a cue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does staring at Parafi with a flat-yet-judgemental look while floating a step away counts as a cue?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yes it does, and Parafi flinches. Because he's managed to mess up, again, but he isn't entirely sure how, and still doesn't understand how this is free.

"I- sorry, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am not particularly offended, but I am worried that you tried that again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just- everything has a price."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think your evaluative abilities have been severely skewed by your unusual upbringing." Pause. "Which is not at all your fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...as you say, sir," he agrees quietly, sounding a little confused.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As an example, by default you should not offer sex as payment for services. And when I say 'by default' I actually mean never."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-but I- don't have anything else to pay with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As another default, people shouldn't demand sex as payment. This is even truer when the terms were not specified before hand and even more truer when things are explicit or implied to be free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-oh," he sounds like that's- completely new information. "I- I didn't. Know. I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apologies from you over this to me, are not necessary." Pause. "I mean that you're the wronged party here."

Permalink Mark Unread

-and there's another new concept apparently.

"I- as you say, sir," he agrees instead of arguing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully your time with better company shall help you deal with this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes. Hopefully. Thank you, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. Back to the library or maybe Parafi wants to eat something?

Permalink Mark Unread

He would probably eat if reminded, but in the immediate: library.

Permalink Mark Unread

The library is there, with it's books.

Permalink Mark Unread

Books! He'll quite happily go back to reading if no-one wants anything else from him.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one does... at least for a while. "Parafi?" One of the triplets approaches. The smiley one.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Sir?" he responds immediately, looking not sure whether he wants to put the book aside hurriedly, or clutch it to his chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is no reason to worry. I just wanted to check if you had dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

He blinks. "I- uh, no, sir?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you hungry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-yes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you still can catch the tail end of dinner time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Yes. He can do that, can't he?

"Thank you," he says, and sets about clearing up the books.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I's no trouble. Let me help you." He helps clearing up the books. "Do you want take one out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I'm allowed?" (He thinks he remembers being told something about that, but hadn't exactly thought it applied to him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris blinks a little at the confusion. "Yeah, you just need to register that you took it out and then you need to return it after... I think it's two weeks max."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- thank you," he says, and pauses, before choosing one of the books. "I- how do I do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles genially. "Let me show you."

Feliaris walks him through the process at the desk, there is a sleepy librarian there that checks them out. It requires a signature, but Feliaris signs on Parafi's behalf.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," he says again, hugging the book carefully to his chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris almost pats him on the shoulder, but quickly retracts the arm and keeps him stiffly to his side to avoid accidental touch. But he smiles brightly after a second and leads him to the dinner hall.

Most tables have seats taken, but only a few are full at this hour. Feliaris will show the process of getting plates, food and silverware.

Permalink Mark Unread

-he almost wishes Feliaris had patted his shoulder. It- It hadn't hurt earlier, just been...startling.

Still, he follows Feliaris' instructions, and looks for an empty or low-populated table.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you mind if I join you for a bit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- uh, yes? I mean, no, sir- I mean- If you- if you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just wanted to make you company if you wanted to. You are my responsibility, but my brothers ended up picking up all the slack and I don't want you to feel like I don't want help you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-oh, I- I'm very grateful, sir, but- please, don't put yourself to any trouble on my account?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no trouble. Unless, that's code for 'I am too afraid to tell you to go away' in which case it's exactly too much trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

-Parafi actually thinks about it before responding. "I- don't think it is?" he says after a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris smile brightens, which is remarkable given how it was fairly full of sunshine already. "Alright then. Interrupt me if you need anything, include a conversation."

He pulls a notebook and starts noting things that might be spell designs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi can't help but smile back, even if he still seems unpractised at it. He eats, but seems slightly distracted watching Feliaris' work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris is focused but occasionally lifts his eyes up to smile at Parafi.

Apparently he is doing some sorcery homework on balancing out a ritual to manage lifeforce waste.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes Parafi a moment to realise what it is, and a moment longer to convince himself that saying something isn't going to be bad. So he explains his own way of doing that - a fairly simple way he'd figure out, out of sheer self preservation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh, I see. I was trying to be clever, but your solution works so much better. Thank you!" He beams.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova smiles shyly, ducking his head and blushing slightly. "You're welcome?" he says, like he's not quite sure those are the right words.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Yes, I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

-sound that might be an answering giggle. If somewhat confused.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that feels like a win in Feliaris' book.

(More importantly, he hopes it's a win in Parafi's book.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, he seems a little more relaxed as he finishes his meal, so that's something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris shows where to dispose of his plate and silverware.

He has a guess, and he knows it's a wild guess, but does Parafi wants to go back to the library?

Permalink Mark Unread

Good guess!

-Unless there's anything else he should be doing, that is?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at this moment, no. Feliaris will sit near him again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi goes back to the books, seem content and excited at everything he has to learn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris will occasionally ask about what he is reading.

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems startled by that, but answers carefully, obviously not used to being asked questions where his answer matters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does this behavior persist if Feliaris keeps doing it, but while trying to be gentler about his phrasings?

Permalink Mark Unread

He relaxes some as he gets used to being asked question, his answers are still somewhat hesitant, but less so.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good. Will he react negatively if Teronmas and Fenrad show up?

Permalink Mark Unread

They take seats side by side Feliaris and say hi to Parafi.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is briefly unsettled, but doesn't seem upset, he nods back, says 'hi' in response.

Permalink Mark Unread

It returns to a similar equilibrium as before, but with the triplets' low whispering comments on sorcery.

Permalink Mark Unread

-It's fairly obvious that he's interested in that topic, even if he's trying very hard not to look like he's listening in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to learn sorcery?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-can I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can set you up for an apprenticeship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you didn't meant something as serious. We can teach what we are learning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- don't- know. I want to but-"

Permalink Mark Unread

The three collective make a "go on" gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't-" he takes a deep breath, trying to figure out what he's trying to stay. "I don't understand why I'd be- allowed to be trained." Pauses, flinches. "Unless you- need me to-" he swallows thickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Need you to...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-need me to- fight, be a-" How had it been phrased? He can't remember, grasps for the nearest thing. "-a foot soldier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We... we don't use foot soldiers," Feliaris says, muttering something in English under his breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are not - in anyway - a military organization. Even our security-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that something that someone did to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes? It- was...part of what I was...for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"People are not for things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- uh, no, of course not, sir." It's quick, glib, placating in its way, and there's a sense that Parafi's disagreement is more about where he fits in terms of 'people' than because he disagrees with Teronmas.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which, includes you. I also you don't need to call Teronmas 'sir'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or feel like we are going to snap at you at any mistake... I mean, it's not good that you feel that way, but it's not your fault. And we won't snap."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- uh. Yes. Sor-" He stops the apology, not sure he should continue it when they seem to think it isn't his fault.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are learning!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a tiny smile. (He liked doing things right, even if they are confusing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, do you still want to learn sorcery?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes? Please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Anything specific you wanna learn? We mostly know defensive or healing stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I uh, defensive stuff? Would be-" (Good, nice, reassuring to have...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas will take the seat next to Parafi if he doesn't mind. And either way, he will pull another notebook and start teaching.

Permalink Mark Unread

No that's fine-

And once he starts teaching, Parafi seems to forget about the proximity. He proves a diligent and eager student.

Permalink Mark Unread

Would Parafi appreciate if Teronmas taught him the theory behind a fire ward?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh. Yes please!

Permalink Mark Unread

So here it is. This bit does this, and that one does that, and to make them work together? You arrange things like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, that makes sense! Thank you!

Permalink Mark Unread

Lets see if Parafi can figure out how to complete this other ritual. There are two steps missing, and they are in this list of ten sample steps.

(It's okay he is not able to, Teronmas is no teacher.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi frowns as he tries to work it out. He manages to get one, but not the other, although the flinch when he admits defeat seems more reflexive than expectant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas checks. "It's okay. I should've tried something easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pauses, not entirely sure how to take that. "I- which one was it?" he asks after a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas nods. "It combines with the other component and that component over there. It's how the ward is closed safely."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I- yes. I see it now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did good. Let's move to the next exercise?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles and nods eagerly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, eventually, they do have to go to bed though.

Permalink Mark Unread

-oh. Yes. Sleep is a thing. He apologises, reflexively, for keeping them from it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is he concealing a sorcery gift that causes compulsion or something? No? Then there is nothing to apologize.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Okay. Well...he thanks them for their time instead, and bids them a good night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good night. Feliaris pauses for a moment. "Would you like a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Pause, confused blink. "I- a hug?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like, when you put arms around other people so they feel better. It's Feliaris go-to reaction to all things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. I- yes, if you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris gives him his best encouraging smile. "It's okay if you don't want to. I am offering because it helps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I've never had one," he admits. (Not that he remembers.) "So I- don't know. It's-" Pauses, briefly struggles with his words, and his phrasing. "I would not mind trying."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's heartbreakingly sad and Feliaris is hugging him now.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Oh. That's-

That's nice. It doesn't hurt.

He's hesitant, doesn't seem to know what to do with his arms for a moment before cautiously hugging back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww. Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug is good, but after a moment, he starts to pull back slightly, they do both need to sleep after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris lets go gently and gives Parafi a smile. "Don't hesitate to ask if you ever need another one."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles back shyly and nods (a little hesitant). "I- yes, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, let's quit while we are ahead and now make the situation weird. See you tomorrow, Parafi." He flashes a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"G'night," he nods, and will make his way back towards the room he was given.

Permalink Mark Unread

The room is there mostly undisturbed, except people left two changes of clothes by a bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't think too hard about that, thinks of everything else they've already given him, and knows his clothes are tatty. Still. He can sleep in them.

So he sleeps, wakes early, and goes in search of somewhere to clean up before he changes.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can somewhat easily find a place to shower. There are people there, but there are stalls and no one is undressed outside of the stalls or anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Good. That's good. He slides into one, cleans himself quickly, dries and changes into clean clothes - and he won't admit to just how good that feels.

Then he goes to find the meeting point for being taken to work. Yesterday was...good. But unsettling. He needs to do something more physical.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are some people there, a rather varied group. Someone is distributing flatbread with jam and coffee around.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll gratefully take the flatbread. Coffee isn't something he's had much experience with, and he didn't particularly enjoy it the few times he had it.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one forces coffee on him. They are sorted by size so the tallest people can go on the tall van. Then they are sent off. The vans are a bit cramped.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not the most uncomfortable transport he's ever been in. He still doesn't like being crowded, but he's learned to deal with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are taken to somewhere outside city proper. A portal hub surrounded by warehouses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. He'll look around for some cue on where he'll be helpful.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is someone guiding people around. She asks if Parafi is really an Efrossian. If so he can help moving around stuff in the warehourse through that portal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, yes he is. And off he goes in the direction he's pointed.

Work?

Permalink Mark Unread

Work.

Of the physical variety.

Moving boxes around mostly. His ability to manipulate heat only comes into play due the fact that the warehouse he is working on is in some kind of desert.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup. He can do that. And do his best to moderate the temperature around him. He's a hard worker, and stronger than he looks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually it's lunch break. People are called through the portal and too a large dinning hall.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes him a moment to remember he's being called as well, that he's not expected to just keep working. Then he follows other workers through.

Permalink Mark Unread

People are various levels of talkative and joyful about their meals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi finds somewhere relatively out of the way to eat his own meal, and is thankful for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Workers eating by themselves is hardly the best social environment, but given how many of the workers come from all sort of places for all sort of reasons no one bothers him.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Yeah, he's not particularly good at the whole 'socialising' thing, although some of that might be not realising it's allowed. (Even if the people talking around him suggests it is, he has no idea how to start a conversation with anyone.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe he should learn an ice-breaker. Like asking about the weather or where they are from.

Or maybe if they need healing. Parafi can someone slipping on the floor and knocking down several boxes on themselves.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Yeah, he can offer healing there. (Part of him doesn't want to, doesn't want to be used for this but- but he doesn't want someone hurt, when they could be not.)

So he goes to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone is very grateful. Some people want the worker to go see a doctor, but their supervisor wants everyone to get back to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Parafi wants to get back to work as well. He's not really used to gratitude being directed his way, and kind of wants to disappear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually people disperse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to work then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup.

Another coworker comes by and gives Parafi a small plastic box on behalf of the coworker he helped.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh- I- y-you don't- have to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh? Daris is the one that wanted you to have it? Just take it dude, it's just some sweet rolls inside a old jam box."

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-oh. Okay. I- thank you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He gives a playful bow and walks away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi blinks after him in confusion, squirrels the box away (it's a little awkward but he manages it), and gets back to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once his shift ends people are paid and herd back into the vans.

Permalink Mark Unread

-he's briefly confused by being paid, has to remind himself that this is different here, and makes himself accept it. Being herded back into the van is easier, he knows how to follow instructions.

Feliaris finds him when they are back.

"Hi! Parafi, how was your day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- it was- good? To be busy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods and grins. "What are you planning to do for the evening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, uh, hadn't really...thought about it." (He'd never had to before.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"More library?" He offers. "You can use the rest of the facilities if you want to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like the library," he says with a small smile and a slight shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris grins. "Then you can spend as much time as you want there."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. "I'm- grateful for that. I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, it means we are doing something right."

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi looks down, smiles a little shyly. "I think you're doing a lot of things right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, thanks, friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's quiet for a moment, and then his smile broadens a little. He's sure that it's just a turn of phrase, but he's never had a friend before, and he finds he likes the idea.

"You're welcome?" (That's what you say, right?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you. Do you want to learn more sorcery?"

Permalink Mark Unread

-That is probably a silly question, based on the way Parafi's face lights up.

He noticeably makes it dim some. "I- please? If that's- okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, I like sorcery too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like...learning." It's a careful admittance, a little wary, a little hesitant, but it's something.

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case Feliaris will pull out some of his old notes for Parafi to take a look at.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Parafi is eager to look at it! His hesitation vanishing once he starts reading over it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The notes are intuitively organized and this set mainly focus/dissects two rituals: an alarm spell and an air quality spells. The notes details how they work and their elements in common and how to design a third ritual combining them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is utterly enthralled, and completely engrossed in the material.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is a great student and Feliaris tells him so.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's shy in the face of praise, but it does seem to encourage him to work harder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think you would like to be a professional sorcerer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. Maybe," he says thoughtfully. "I- still haven't thought that far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deciding one's future can be hard," Feliaris says softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, guys! Guess what? They are going to screen an Elan remake of Matilda."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a confused blink from Parafi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a movie. About a young girl... she is a genius unrecognized by her parents... not sure how much is spoilers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh-" (That sounds interesting.) "...Enjoy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I came here to invite you too, silly one. I mean, everyone is invited."

Permalink Mark Unread

That startles a smile out of Parafi. "Oh- I. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you-" of course not, "do you know what's like watching a movie in a theater?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-No?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You go in a really big room, with several rolls of city. The lights are turned off, so you can see the movie when projected in the screen. ...And then you watch the movie, often while eating snack food."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Let's go then. Well, I should warn you that's a children's movie so the theater will be packed with them. But that can add to the experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gives him pause for a moment, but he nods. "I- I'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Movie theaters are entirely safe, and you can sit in the back or in a corridor seat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-That would be good, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect. It's tomorrow after work hours. I and my brothers will get infant herding duty, but I will buy you a pile of snacks."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "I- you don't have to- do that. But- thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, dude. It's no trouble."

The next day the triplets are indeed infant-herding (alongside two other temple staff), each three kids were grouped to a volunteer adult.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dal-Yora is there giving instructions. She is not going, but she smiles brightly at her grandsons before sending everyone away.

The theater is in walking distance and this is the good part of town. They get there without any trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is an actual candy shop in cinema's hall. There is some rather unruly distribution of sweets and popcorn (and sweet popcorn).

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi stays fairly close to the triplets, and seems utterly perplexed by the candy shop.

Permalink Mark Unread

The candy shop contains rolls and rolls of colorful bite-sized candy. This is not Earth, they have more fruits and healthier options, but this still is a candy shop. So there is all manner of chocolate covered confections.

They are not the only patrons, though, their group is the largest by far and rather attention grabbing. So it isn't surprising that some people might be looking at the triplets in a non-obvious way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenrad, is, for some reason, smiling a lot while delivering the snacks to children. The adults presents are less happy with the task.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas gives to Parafi and his charges a bucket of popcorn and a bucket of candy, each. With buckets number nine and ten for himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," Parafi says gratefully as he accepts them, holding them carefully. (If he notices the looks, he doesn't immediately respond to it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You welcome, dude."

They get in. There is some seating arrangement thing, but the adults get aisle privileges and Teronmas lets Parafi seat on the aisle if he wants to.

The lights go out. There is musical commercial about buying snacks and what to do in case of fire (calmly leave as the wards will handle it).

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi would like! Thank you very much, Teronmas.

He listens and watches intently, and sneaks a few bits of popcorn.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are couple of trailers, one for an animated movie and one for a high fantasy with winged people.

Than the movie starts with the opening sequence showing the birth of the tittle character "Maltadee" being born and being forgotten by the family in their car.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nova is utterly enthralled, and a little on edge. (It's not the same, not by a long shot, but he can't help but identify with Maltadee.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Maltadee is growing up. Her family remains awful, but she learns to take care of herself. Here is a montage of her doing things like math while her mother is on the phone complaining about a salesperson being wrong about a discount. And here is a montage of her baking herself cake and enjoying it under the table while her family wonders where that delicious cake smell is coming from.

Then she discovers the wonders of libraries!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup. Parafi is very taken with this movie. (He's kind of forgotten he has the popcorn and candy.)

Permalink Mark Unread

So many books! The family remains awful, but Maltadee can escape into different lives and different worlds. And it's almost like meeting people from ages ago!

In short: books are great!

One day, Maltadee learns that there is a school nearby and decides that she wants to join!

Her parents say "no" seriously misjudging her age.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is leaning forward in his seat, more and more taken, and utterly invested in Maltadee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not all hope is lost! Maltadee sneaks into school. By a window. This confuses her fellow students enough that they don't stop her. The teacher arrives moments later and is a substitute teacher, so they don't immediately notice that Maltadee isn't supposed to be in that class.

Luckily, Maltadee gets every answer right! Impressing the teacher Ms. Honey.

Permalink Mark Unread

Go Maltadee!

Parafi manages not to make an exclamation of sheer joy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ms. Honey is very impressed, during recess she tries to ask about Maltadee, but there is no school information about her in the schools files.

Meanwhile, Maltadee befriends a diverse cast of children belonging to a variety of ethical, social and even interdimensional backgrounds. But then everyone goes quiet as a tall, thin woman with sharp nails strides across the campus, followed by Maltadee's father! She looks very angry! And her dad looks very unhappy!

Maltadee hides! The woman stops and appears to catch her scent after a moment, but resumes her walk. She takes Maltadee's dad to her office where she berates him about the car accident and to confirm his contact information through the phone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Parafi is on edge, one hand gripping an arm of the seat tightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The contact information turns out to be false, and Maltadee's dad fumbles to give her the actual information. The woman, reveals herself to be Aratia Warspear, former spear throwing athlete (she makes threatening motions with the spear she has in her office) and talks at length about her iron maiden (also in her office), implying she wishes she could use it on Maltadee's dad.

(Some of the children in the audience are whimpering. Teronmas is trying to calm one of them.)

Meanwhile, Maltadee's mom shows up and catches her sneaking around. Apparently, convinced that Maltadee sneaked in the car she takes her daughter back to it and the three leave when the Aratia dismisses Maltadee's father.

Ms. Honey watches all of this happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is doing better than the children whimpering, he looks a little more angry than scared. (Even if he can almost feel the fear thrumming through him, can remember what it was like- He pushes it away. This is a film.)

Permalink Mark Unread

For once, Maltadee's parents pay attention to her and ground her. She can't get to the library or try go to school again. It's very sad. Dramatically sitting by the window watching the rain levels of sad.

Luckily, Ms. Honey shows up at their home! And manages to convince the parents to let their daughter attend an advance class. They don't believe their daughter has any potential, but fear that the teacher was sent by Warspear, so Maltadee gets to go to school!

Maltadee is very happy about this. So happy that when she goes to her room she starts jumping around, her eyes are closed, and she doesn't notice the surrounding objects floating while the lights flicker. She jumps so high that she hits the ceiling and everything stays very still for a moment before falling to the ground again.

The scene ends with Maltadee blinking in confusion at her room. She raises a hand and a book inches closer.

Intermission!

Permalink Mark Unread

"The movie is not over yet. This is just a break for people to go to the bathroom or buy more stuff. How are you doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi thinks about that for a moment. "I- I'm good. It's- this is good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am good too." He turns to the kids on the other side of him. "Are you guys good?"

"I want more cherry snaps."

"I need to go to the bathroom."

"Right, it is the bathroom break. Excuse me, Parafi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He moves so that everyone can get out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can go as well. Just a suggestion." Teronmas picks up the two kids by the neck and lifts them effortlessly, gently depositing them into the aisle.

That one that stayed asks. "Hey, can I get your popcorn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks down at it. "Yeah, sure," he holds it out.

Permalink Mark Unread

The kid greedly grabs the popcorn and starts shoving it in his mouth.

Feliaris comes over. "Hey, do guys want anything? I am buying stuff."

The kid, mouth full of popcorn and with more spilling in the ground, says. "Popcorn!"

"Okay, but try to keep it to your mouth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

A trailer to a musical plays during the intermission and then the lights go out. Feliaris and Teronmas are back shortly after, followed by the two kids.

The movie starts again. Maltadee is happy at her first day at school until Warspears shows up at the end of the recess. The kids run from her and Warspears grabs the slower ones and starts throwing them back into class.

Permalink Mark Unread

This movie is a ride. Parafi doesn't know what to make of this - but it's a kid's movie right? It's going to have a happy ending.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, there is quite a bit of shenanigans: The reveal that Ms. Honey is Warspears' niece. Maltadee exploring her new powers and making new friends. An elaborate musical number that has no bearing in the plot (but at least alligators are surprisingly cute). The discovery that Maltadee's powers are a new kind of magic because she is Just So Smart. Maltadee's family having problems with the interdimensional police.

But after all of that.

Yes, there is a happy ending and Maltadee gets to be adopted by Ms. Honey, and they live happily ever after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definite relief and joy from Parafi at that ending!

Permalink Mark Unread

Roll credits.

"So did you guys enjoy it?" Teronmas asks the kids and Parafi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was really good," Parafi confirms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I liked it!" One of the kids pipes up.

"The popcorn was really good."

"I am sure the studio is glad that you liked the popcorn," Teronmas comments. "I like it myself, but I think Nostalgia will favor the Earth version."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nostalgia always leaves the old ones favoured," a female voice declares. "But this was utterly delightful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I am definitely not complaining. I liked that the other kids had the chance to influence the plot. Also, hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello," she smiles warmly. "Inara Sauvesteri. Sorry to butt in like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nori Lasir," says the popcorn kid, "you are forgiven."

"Teronmas Vaesteri," he says after giggling. "Witty commentary is always welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do try to be witty at all times."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Really, Ina? I leave you alone for two seconds and you find someone to harass."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, it is only harassment if it's unwelcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully that means you are not annoying anyone," Fenrad says turning away from his group of kids. He stops a kid from running away while still looking at them. "Hello, you said Sauvesteri? I think we met your parents."

Permalink Mark Unread

-That sure is a reaction. "Yeah, probably. I'm sure they mentioned how much of a disappointment their only daughter is."

Permalink Mark Unread

The other girl loops her arm around Inara's shoulder and hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't say I remember that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry about that. At least in my experience, that's a sign of people that are not afraid of being themselves. And as the movie just told us that's the most important thing to be."

Nori Lasir tentatively offers some popcorn to Inara. One of the other kids also raises a half-finished popcorn.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets smile. "Well then. Thank you," she says to the children. "But I'm quite popcorned out. Oh, this is 'Chelle," she nudges her shoulder slightly more firmly into the other girl's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Popcorns are hastily retracted. "This is Fenrad and that other one is Feliaris. Yes, we are related. Ah, and this is Parafi." He points at Parafi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi gives a slightly nervous wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the Vaesteri's grandsons right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The three and only."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-I feel like I vaguely know that name. Vaesteri... Vaesteri... Oh. My parents might have mentioned you? Maybe..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh, very likely? We were all the hot gossip a few months ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodness, I'm surprised my parents weren't busy proclaiming their delight that I wasn't the subject of the gossip for once..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They were," 'Chelle sounds amused. "You were ignoring them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which I am sure was a good life decision." Teronmas says, sounds sincere under the joking tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You aren't wrong. I often find that listening to my parents is a dreadful idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the other child-minders butts in. "Hey, the credits is over and we should clear out. Hey, aren't you are Sauvesteri?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I tend to go by 'Inara'."

Permalink Mark Unread

The child-minder nods.

"I am not finished with my popcorn." Nori protests.

"You can take that with you," Teronmas explains, "but maybe we should at least move to the lobby."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should let the staff get one with cleaning," 'Chelle agrees, starting to steer Inara.

Permalink Mark Unread

They start walking out. "So, have you ever watched the original version?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad had a habit of getting me to watch every movie that had anything about adoption in it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And of course 'Chelle then had me watch her favourites."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that's the true meaning of friendship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sharing the stuff you like with the other," another triplet butts in. "Also, hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also midnight raids to the kitchen to acquire snacks without Dad noticing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He always noticed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Parental extra sensory powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi startles a little, looking concerned.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not like he cared," 'Chelle says with a grin. (...Did her hair colour just change?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You hair just changed!" Says a girl that was being lead by Feliaris.

"Ooh, nice trick." Teronmas compliments, then to Parafi. "She didn't sound like it was a big deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fond of it," 'Chelle comments lightly. "He's right," she adds to Parafi. "Dad has an open kitchen policy. If it doesn't have a note on it, it's fair game."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is good, because I swear his cooking is addictive."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's hard to tell if Parafi believes that, but he nods, at least somewhat reassured.

Permalink Mark Unread

By this point they are starting to make a headcount. There are not a lot of people in the lobby, so the task isn't all that complicated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can we try it sometime?" Asks a child.

"I don't think her dad is a professional cook."

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi is very aware of the guy watching the triplets, but tries to shrug it off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not professional, no. But if you ask him, he might. He does love cooking for lots of people..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh... in this case lots of people can be easily dozens, if we only count these kids-"

"It's okay." The kid adds a tad hastily.

"I mean, it's the sort of thing that gets on the level of paying him for his trouble."

"It's okay."

"Maybe your father would like to give a cooking class at the temple?" Feliaris asks 'Chelle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dad regularly cooks enough that there's leftovers for days, even with me and 'Chelle eating three or four portions in our first sitting of the meal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll ask him, I'm pretty sure he'd be delighted to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect, can I get your phone numbers then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This has to be the fastest anyone's asked me for my number," Inara comments coyly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Actually, I think that prize still goes to the girl with the atrocious chat up lines."

Still, 'Chelle's pulling out a pad and pen and jotting their numbers down. "My Dad's as well," she says as she holds the piece of paper out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teronmas takes it, without a second comment from the chat up girl. One of the other minders who-was-totally-not-paying-attention fidgets uncomfortably.

"Thank you, second place is still pretty good where I am standing," he waves the little piece of paper before putting it away.

"I think," says a second child-minder, "we are ready to go to the temple then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hope to hear from you soon then," 'Chelle says with a grin. "We should head anyway, Ina, I promised Dad we'd do the shopping on the way home."

Permalink Mark Unread

Inara groans good-naturedly. "I forgot about that." Recovers to smile charmingly at the triplets and their entourage. "Pleasure meeting you. I look forward to continuing our friendship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Likewise!" Teronmas says and they also move to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

The two girls laugh and wave, and vanish off...to do whatever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi stays close to the triplets.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's alright.

Part way through, Fenrad has to go back to the theater to retrieve something. But they can make their way back without incident.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi keeps watching everything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fenrad comes back, happier than Parafi has ever seen him, he and his brothers talk in whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's curious, but isn't going to try and pry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Overall it was a fun outing.

The triplets talk to their grandparents about 'Chelle and Inara. They find it delightful that they met a couple of nice young ladies (when does something stops counting as a hint?).

Permalink Mark Unread

Calls are made.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren would be absolutely delighted to do a cooking class! Or just cook for people! Either or, he's just very happy to do any kind of cooking really!

Permalink Mark Unread

Would he mind terrible to make a small scale demo? Cooking something for a small group while teaching them what they are doing?

Permalink Mark Unread

He would be utterly delighted to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great! They can settle a time, and they will provide a place. And the test drive pupils.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ten pupils is probably a good starting point? Not too many, and Aaren's not actually taught like this before...

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds like a good number to start with. They should be able to find that many people interested.

Permalink Mark Unread

If they can't, no worries, but ten is best as a maximum. He'll be there on the agreed day.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's settle then.

The brothers will ask around for volunteers. How about Parafi?

Permalink Mark Unread

-He's allowed? Yes! Please!

Permalink Mark Unread

He is absolutely welcome to do so!

Permalink Mark Unread

He'd be absolutely delighted to!

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, here is the time and place.

They get around to finding other volunteers.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Aaren will be there in plenty of time before the actual time to make sure everything's set up and ready to go.

Permalink Mark Unread

With Inara, although 'Chelle doesn't appear to have joined them today.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here is another student. Who reads the sign at the door explaining what this kitchen space is being used for and looks relieved.

Because when a Vaesteri heir asks you something you say yes, no question asked. Her brother agreed with her in this.

But you definitely should have paid attention to what he was asking instead of freaking out that a Vaesteri heir was talking to you. As her brother told her.

Well, positive side: a free cooking class, sounds fun. She doesn't work on the kitchens, so she rarely has the chance to cook anything.

"Hi! I am Ima-Aidala Costu, but you can call me Ima." She says to no one in particular.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren smiles warmly at her. "Hi, Ima, I'm Aaren, this is Inara. I'm delighted you could join us."

Permalink Mark Unread

She inclines her head, approaching. "An honor to meet you, sir. Hi, are you here to learn to or are you his assistant?" Ima asks Inara.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly just to be in the way," Inara says brightly. "It's a well learned fact that me doing anything cooking related isn't the most advisable thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Parafi slips into the back of the room.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Imag giggles. "If it helps, my lack of cooking failures is entirely a lack of practice, so you're not alone in this class."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just don't slice your hand open and you're already doing better than me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will try."

Permalink Mark Unread

The triplets walk-in one by one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ima glances at the sound of the door opening, freezes, turns beet red and then forces a polite smile on her face. All in very quick succession.

She does not, however, actually say anything to greet the triplets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inara notices, but doesn't say anything, instead smiling at the triplets and waving.

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi continues to loiter near the back of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feliaris waves and smiles at Ima, but is merciful enough not to push it and instead just turns to Inara and Aaren.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, Ima will just take a few steps back.

Actually she will find herself next to Parafi, mildly surprised in seeing him there. "Hi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Hi?" He seems a little surprised she's speaking to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, I have seen you around. Uh, are you excited for the class?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- think so? It sounded interesting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does." She says encouragingly. "Have you ever done anything like this before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head. "Uh-uh. Never had the-" He makes a small hand gesture that seems to amount to 'opportunity'. "You?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I tried to learn some, and they tried to teach me some, but in the orphanage I grew up I just would end up working on other stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Did you like the other stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It varied? It was good being able to contribute and it made the caretakers like me more. And they recommended me and my brother to work here, which is a huge honor, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's nice to be able to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. Oh, she doesn't remember his name.

That's awkward.

Okay, okay, you can just ask Ima.

"Uh... what is your name, again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Uh. Parafi." Beat. "I- don't think I know your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's an interesting name..." She blinks, "wait a moment, are you the Efrossian sorcerer?"

She actually knows what Parafi is code for, she is not consciously realizing it because an Efrossian is a more interesting fact.

"Uh, I am Ima."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh- I'm- trying? to be? I guess? I'm... only just starting to learn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's okay! We all are doing our best, we are just at different stages of learning how to get it right." She is definitely the kind of person that says that sort of proverb completely seriously.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Parafi might not be the type to say proverbs like that completely seriously, but he can actually appreciate it when Ima says them. He smiles shyly. "Thank you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

More pupils come in.

"Uh, do you want to pair up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks around, then nods quickly. "I- yes. Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great." Ima is so relieved that she won't have to go through the awkwardness of finding a partner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Speaking of which, does Inara want a partner?

Permalink Mark Unread

Inara would be delighted by a partner! -Provided he does anything that involves chopping. Inara's actually got a scar from her last attempt at chopping things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ouch. He will chop things, his hands are even warded against cuts and burns.

Permalink Mark Unread

That would've been smart! But she hadn't thought of that! Hindsight!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anyway, Aaren is calling the class to something resembling order and starting to talk them through the recipe.

Permalink Mark Unread

To be fair the ward feels like wearing thick gloves, so he can't blame her. And time for the class to start.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ima is laser focused on paying attention on Aaren.

(She sometimes gets distracted by the triplets, but it isn't much.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren is a pretty good teacher, and definitely enthusiastic about cooking!

Permalink Mark Unread

Parafi will gently pull Ima's attention back to what they're supposed to be doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is a bit embarrassed but grateful. She doubles her focus on the recipe.

Permalink Mark Unread

The recipe isn't anything majorly complicated - although it's an earth recipe, chorizo, sweet potato, red onion and spinach with pearl barley, Aaren advises on substitutes for all the ingredients if they don't have ready access to the earth variants. It uses a single roasting tin, which is convenient for a lot of reasons, and everything cooks together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, Earth cuisine, how exotic. Most ingredients are not too rare in a city like Milirevi, but it's nice to know the options.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, now that they've done all the prep work, they've got time before it'll actually be cooked. Anyone want to learn how to make flapjacks?

Permalink Mark Unread

They would be excited to!

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then! Here's how to do that - butter, syrup, melted together, add oats, and then add dried fruit of your choice! He offers a couple of variations which include adding fresh fruit at different stages of the cooking process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix approves. He picks a variety of fresh fruits to experiment with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren is delighted! And provides plenty of advice!

Eventually: the flapjack is ready to go in the oven, and what they've made is ready to come out and be tasted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

As they say on Earth, nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slightly hesitant nom, but nom nonetheless.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aaren tries a little bit from every pair, and declares himself impressed!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ima beams, feeling very proud.

Permalink Mark Unread

Felix is sure enjoying himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well then. Will you have me back?" Aaren's tone is light, almost teasing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely, your cooking is delightful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did a lot of the hard work here!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"His cooking is the best. Maybe. Aunt Ange's is great as well. Hard to pick a best..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So many good cooks, are you hoarding them all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Inara giggles. "Trying certainly. I do like to share with my friends though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool, because sharing is caring."

Permalink Mark Unread

Inara gives him a coy, and slightly arch smile. "In more than one way."
