The Vaesteri family was among Milirevi's most important families. For generations, they've put their sorcerous prowess at service of the city and in the name of the Daliath religion. Their contributions were so notorious that they earned multiple awards and titles for it. Including the Dal-kanan-Dal (the blessing that multiples blessings), an honor granted to a single digit of families around the known worlds. The family ran a temple that was large, beautiful, a historical landmark, and a shelter to those in need.
And need a shelter he does, if only for a little while. He's been running since he realised he could escape his last master, and he just needs to stop, take stock, and figure out what his next move is. He keeps his head low, trying to avoid notice, looking for somewhere he can just...be. And preferably avoid other people - safe or not, he doesn't want to have to fight here, or do anything else, but he will. If he has to.
He finds himself in a large mess hall. There are people milling about... some are fully-augmented, but those are all sitting at a table by themselves.
Near the door there are three indentical boys that look his age, two of them notice him coming in and take a step towards him. The one with a clipboard smiles a friendly smile and asks. "Hello, welcome to the Vaesteri Daliath Temple. Are you seeking help and assistance?" the words sound memorized and his speech is understandable but accented.
"It's okay. I will walk through it."
They approach a desk with a young man. He gives Feliaris a barely disguised look of disapproval. "What can I help you, young Vaesteri?"
"Uh, just Feliaris. Where are the forms for admission? I need one for Parafi here."
"Sure," the man says with a snort, "just be sure to get his actual name."
Parafi flinches, as the hand is thrown from his shoulder, and the chair falls to the ground. He doesn't want to fight, but-
But he will if he has to. He just wants to be left alone. (It's not really a conscious thought or effort that has flames lighting around his hands.)
"I just want to rest," he says, and he doesn't sound combative, he sounds exhausted, and lost.
In that case he will be led to an bedroom with two mistmatched bunk beds.
"The room is fireproof. No one is using this room at the moment and we don't have plans to move anyone in. You can rest now and go look Feliaris or one of his brothers when you get hungry or need a change of clothes."
Parafi doesn't sleep for long (he never does, survives on fits and spurts of rest grabbed whenever he can).
He lies awake for a little while, staring at the bottom of the bed above him. His stomach reminds him he hasn't eaten in... Too long. And he could-
But he isn't managing to plan anything, can't seem to fit his head right around the idea that he needs to make decisions now. He takes a deep breath, and slides from under the bed, remaking it quickly. Then he heads for the door, pausing to see of he can sense anyone in the immediate vicinity.
...He knew that. He would run before that had to be the case. He would die before that if he had to. They'd taught him to fight, forced him to, and- and then he'd turned that against them, and they wouldn't have him back. (Except he wasn't sure he could fight them again if they tried.)
"I- as you say, thank you."
In that case will show him around. They already saw the mess hall and kitchen. Here is the courtyard (there are people milling about). That section over there is a Sports court's, Teronmas is not sure what the girls are playing (but it's a fairly common game around these parts).
Some people look their way. Some people even look at Parafi with what might be considered a challenging look... but no one stares at him for more than a second. Most prefer to look at Teronmas with looks that range from challenging, to deferential and even happy. Teronmas waves at a couple of kids.
Parafi observes this, almost curiously, but does his best to maintain the appearance that he isn't a threat. (He needs this sanctuary too much right now to risk breaking their rules.)
He'll admit to being a tiny bit charmed (and envious) of Teronmas' brief interaction with the children, but he doesn't show it obviously.
"Yup! The dangers of an upper class with too much magic in their hands. Someone tried to give the city a hexagonal grid and someone then tried to undo that, among other things. The residents felt their lives and lifeforce was not being properly managed so they took the people responsible and..." He makes a hand slicing the throat kind of gesture.
Well, it isn't sex work... which Parafi might just not admit anyway if questioned. "Not a lot of opportunity for fighting. Definitely opportunity for various sorts of manual labour at the docks and around the portals. ...They rarely need help refrigerating the products, but I hear that Efrossians are well liked for the free temperature regulation in hot days."
There is not much need of fighting around these parts. Security is a thing, but typically it involves more of a background check (or legal presence at all). Plenty of heavy-lifting things, she will find something. They mostly have things on a day-to-day basis with vans to transport people to that day's job.
Teronmas pages through various books. "Uh.... I am not really finding anything that does permanent literacy. There are some long-ish term translation options that might deal with it, but they would take a longer time to prepare. Do you want a temporary effect to see if it works?"
That's a very good trait for ritual casting! And eventually they have it all set and after some magical words are spoken while some crystals are held.
Then Parafi feels lightheaded following by feeling like the opposite of that and then back to normal.
Teronmas offers a book cover for Parafi to test the effect. It worked, reading feels weird, but he can understand the meaning behind the letters.
Feliaris almost pats him on the shoulder, but quickly retracts the arm and keeps him stiffly to his side to avoid accidental touch. But he smiles brightly after a second and leads him to the dinner hall.
Most tables have seats taken, but only a few are full at this hour. Feliaris will show the process of getting plates, food and silverware.
-Good. That's good. He slides into one, cleans himself quickly, dries and changes into clean clothes - and he won't admit to just how good that feels.
Then he goes to find the meeting point for being taken to work. Yesterday was...good. But unsettling. He needs to do something more physical.
The candy shop contains rolls and rolls of colorful bite-sized candy. This is not Earth, they have more fruits and healthier options, but this still is a candy shop. So there is all manner of chocolate covered confections.
They are not the only patrons, though, their group is the largest by far and rather attention grabbing. So it isn't surprising that some people might be looking at the triplets in a non-obvious way.
"You welcome, dude."
They get in. There is some seating arrangement thing, but the adults get aisle privileges and Teronmas lets Parafi seat on the aisle if he wants to.
The lights go out. There is musical commercial about buying snacks and what to do in case of fire (calmly leave as the wards will handle it).
Maltadee is growing up. Her family remains awful, but she learns to take care of herself. Here is a montage of her doing things like math while her mother is on the phone complaining about a salesperson being wrong about a discount. And here is a montage of her baking herself cake and enjoying it under the table while her family wonders where that delicious cake smell is coming from.
Then she discovers the wonders of libraries!
So many books! The family remains awful, but Maltadee can escape into different lives and different worlds. And it's almost like meeting people from ages ago!
In short: books are great!
One day, Maltadee learns that there is a school nearby and decides that she wants to join!
Her parents say "no" seriously misjudging her age.
Not all hope is lost! Maltadee sneaks into school. By a window. This confuses her fellow students enough that they don't stop her. The teacher arrives moments later and is a substitute teacher, so they don't immediately notice that Maltadee isn't supposed to be in that class.
Luckily, Maltadee gets every answer right! Impressing the teacher Ms. Honey.
Ms. Honey is very impressed, during recess she tries to ask about Maltadee, but there is no school information about her in the schools files.
Meanwhile, Maltadee befriends a diverse cast of children belonging to a variety of ethical, social and even interdimensional backgrounds. But then everyone goes quiet as a tall, thin woman with sharp nails strides across the campus, followed by Maltadee's father! She looks very angry! And her dad looks very unhappy!
Maltadee hides! The woman stops and appears to catch her scent after a moment, but resumes her walk. She takes Maltadee's dad to her office where she berates him about the car accident and to confirm his contact information through the phone.
The contact information turns out to be false, and Maltadee's dad fumbles to give her the actual information. The woman, reveals herself to be Aratia Warspear, former spear throwing athlete (she makes threatening motions with the spear she has in her office) and talks at length about her iron maiden (also in her office), implying she wishes she could use it on Maltadee's dad.
(Some of the children in the audience are whimpering. Teronmas is trying to calm one of them.)
Meanwhile, Maltadee's mom shows up and catches her sneaking around. Apparently, convinced that Maltadee sneaked in the car she takes her daughter back to it and the three leave when the Aratia dismisses Maltadee's father.
Ms. Honey watches all of this happen.
For once, Maltadee's parents pay attention to her and ground her. She can't get to the library or try go to school again. It's very sad. Dramatically sitting by the window watching the rain levels of sad.
Luckily, Ms. Honey shows up at their home! And manages to convince the parents to let their daughter attend an advance class. They don't believe their daughter has any potential, but fear that the teacher was sent by Warspear, so Maltadee gets to go to school!
Maltadee is very happy about this. So happy that when she goes to her room she starts jumping around, her eyes are closed, and she doesn't notice the surrounding objects floating while the lights flicker. She jumps so high that she hits the ceiling and everything stays very still for a moment before falling to the ground again.
The scene ends with Maltadee blinking in confusion at her room. She raises a hand and a book inches closer.
Intermission!
A trailer to a musical plays during the intermission and then the lights go out. Feliaris and Teronmas are back shortly after, followed by the two kids.
The movie starts again. Maltadee is happy at her first day at school until Warspears shows up at the end of the recess. The kids run from her and Warspears grabs the slower ones and starts throwing them back into class.
Well, there is quite a bit of shenanigans: The reveal that Ms. Honey is Warspears' niece. Maltadee exploring her new powers and making new friends. An elaborate musical number that has no bearing in the plot (but at least alligators are surprisingly cute). The discovery that Maltadee's powers are a new kind of magic because she is Just So Smart. Maltadee's family having problems with the interdimensional police.
But after all of that.
Yes, there is a happy ending and Maltadee gets to be adopted by Ms. Honey, and they live happily ever after.
"Sorry about that. At least in my experience, that's a sign of people that are not afraid of being themselves. And as the movie just told us that's the most important thing to be."
Nori Lasir tentatively offers some popcorn to Inara. One of the other kids also raises a half-finished popcorn.
"Uh... in this case lots of people can be easily dozens, if we only count these kids-"
"It's okay." The kid adds a tad hastily.
"I mean, it's the sort of thing that gets on the level of paying him for his trouble."
"It's okay."
"Maybe your father would like to give a cooking class at the temple?" Feliaris asks 'Chelle.
Teronmas takes it, without a second comment from the chat up girl. One of the other minders who-was-totally-not-paying-attention fidgets uncomfortably.
"Thank you, second place is still pretty good where I am standing," he waves the little piece of paper before putting it away.
"I think," says a second child-minder, "we are ready to go to the temple then."
Here is another student. Who reads the sign at the door explaining what this kitchen space is being used for and looks relieved.
Because when a Vaesteri heir asks you something you say yes, no question asked. Her brother agreed with her in this.
But you definitely should have paid attention to what he was asking instead of freaking out that a Vaesteri heir was talking to you. As her brother told her.
Well, positive side: a free cooking class, sounds fun. She doesn't work on the kitchens, so she rarely has the chance to cook anything.
"Hi! I am Ima-Aidala Costu, but you can call me Ima." She says to no one in particular.
The recipe isn't anything majorly complicated - although it's an earth recipe, chorizo, sweet potato, red onion and spinach with pearl barley, Aaren advises on substitutes for all the ingredients if they don't have ready access to the earth variants. It uses a single roasting tin, which is convenient for a lot of reasons, and everything cooks together.
