"...you can what."

"Do you have a watch or something? I can show you."

...sure, why not. He digs out his pocket-watch and hands it over.

Same as the grandfather clock she saw earlier, it's backwards, like a clock seen in a mirror.

She holds it carefully, facing it towards him and focuses -- focuses on the passing of time, on Hatter, on herself, and wills that it stop.

Time pushes back at her, but she's used to it and can handle it and --

The ticking stops.

Hatter takes the watch, delicately, and holds it close to his face to inspect it.

"...I have to admit, it would be quite a coincidence if this watch just happened to have stopped. And you don't seem to have done anything to the workings..."

"I can't hold it particularly long. Maybe five minutes? But my uncles are talented enough that they're immortal, so... I'll get there eventually."

He sets the watch down on the table. "Very impressive, Miss Juliet. I know someone who'll be bursting to ask you a million questions as soon as I tell her about you. I should probably send out a message fairly soon, in fact, if that's alright. My friend will be very upset with me otherwise."

"A friend that likes shiny new magic and strangers from other worlds?"

"Shiny new magic, yes. She might not be quite so interested in you as a person." Unless his crazy theory turns out to be right, that is.

"Everless can be rather single-minded, and she doesn't always pay attention to social niceties. Comes of being a bird, probably, although she's the only Raven I've ever met, so I can't be sure."

"I don't require social niceties from anyone, really. Especially not strange birds. Sounds fun, actually."

"Then it sounds like you'll get on wonderfully!"

He finds some paper and starts writing a note to Everless. "I have to say, I expected you to be more surprised about the part where she's a bird. Last time I checked, birds on your side of the mirror weren't people."

"I'm in an completely different world. And even so, in my world I have immortal time manipulating murderous uncles, my own ability to manipulate time and a creative mind. I'm kind of just going with it."

"That's an eminently reasonable attitude, Miss Juliet."

Having finished his note, Hatter takes the paper and starts folding it into an origami bird. "In case it comes up, you should assume that most animals in Wonderland can talk," he says while doing this, "although they vary in intelligence and conversational ability."

"I'll keep that in mind. Is there anyone I should avoid?"

Time starts straining against her, so she releases it.

...she hasn't, technically, done anything illegal. And she hasn't seen him do anything illegal, either. If she's who he thinks she might be—but all he's got there is wild speculation and a few strange coincidences. It's probably just his imagination.

"Not within the borders of Wonderland, I don't think. Strange creatures roam the edgelands, but as long as you stick to civilisation everyone should be, well, civilised."

"What kind of creatures?"

"Kinds that defy categorisation or easy explanation, for the most part." While he thinks of how to explain the denizens of the edgelands, he gets up to put the origami bird out of the window, where it flaps away.

"Maybe an example," he says when he sits back down. "The most well-known monster near Wonderland's borders is the Jabberwock, which isn't exactly representative, but it'll do for a beginning. I've never seen it, but according to most reports, it's a great dark beast with a long neck and tail, giant bat's wings, and teeth as long as your forearm. It's savage and vicious, and will attack anyone it meets, but it's clumsy enough on the ground that some have survived to tell the tale."
