It never rains but it pours

After a very stilted eight hours in a Rope Trick, and a quick flight to the palace, it seems as if the city has returned to a very unstable and rainy normality. Tillia naps on Coeliaris's office sofa, while Coeliaris works. By the late afternoon, when she wakes up, a large collection of pamplets from the day have been bundled together, and dropped off outside their office door. Everything is normal.

She reads the pamplets lazily, reading choice bits to the Professor aloud, and enjoying making her giggle.

And then

"The Infamous House of Halflings has been Laid Waste."

"Oh no! That's where that nice delegate we met? Aina? was staying?"

She sighs. "Yes."

She looks at the papers in front of her, and then at Tillia. Priorities. "Do you want to scry for her?"

(An hour later, they're in a carriage, on the way to the temple of Shelyn)

Aina has managed to catch some sleep and then spent a very tedious morning pretending that all she has ever wanted to do with her life is teach this Andoranian Shelynite all the songs she knows, since that seems to be the implied price of hospitality.

The carriage rattles to a halt outside the temple. Tillia casts a little cantrip, and soon after, a whisper arrives in Aina's ears.

"Hi Aina- I'm outside the temple of Shelyn, and I wanted to make sure you were all right? May we see you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excuse me, my friend's outside!" Aina interrupts the Shelynite, who's come back for another round, and she pops out of the temple a moment later. "Tillia!"

Tillia pops out of the carriage, into the rain (Tillia cast Fastidiousness, Coeliaris likes the rain) and hugs Aina briefly. "Are you all right? You want to get in our carriage? It's raining..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, please, I've been in that temple since bedtime yesterday and they have hardly any space -" Up she hops. "A mob with one of the delegates who was on a committee with me and Permira and Alonso attacked our house! Most of us scattered but I haven't seen anyone since."

"Oh, no! Why don't you come back to our apartment? We could have dinner- and-" she glances at the Professor- "if you need somewhere to stay, we have a spare bed in the guest room?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Coeliaris nods. "Of course, you'd be entirely welcome. Before that- when you reported in, did you tell the palace that it was a Delegate who did this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't go into a lot of detail, the guard didn't seem like he'd appreciate it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers for a moment.

"I have a magically preserved pastry or two, if you're hungry now, but I really think we should go by the palace first, tell them about this, and have dinner after. You're a witness to a significant crime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had dinner last night and the Shelynites were passing out oatmeal, I'm all right if you think it's urgent!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I rather think that they would want to know this sooner rather than later!"

She casts a Message to the coachman, and the coach begins to rattling towards the palace.

The palace is a frenzy of activity. Lucky delegates are showing up to report that they are not dead, less lucky ones are being led to the guest wings and barracks until they can find new lodgings, and a small army of paladins are marching out of thin air in one of the gardens.

"You're convention delegates? Names?"

Coeliaris cast fly when they got there. It gets you taken much more seriously.
"Senior Professor Coeliaris, invited representative of the reestablished Westcrown College of Wizardry. I reported in this morning."
She indicates the less well dressed halfling. "This is Aina Millet, sortitioned delegate. She has not yet reported in. We need to report a significant crime to someone who will take it seriously. Aina here witnessed one of the delegates leading a lethal mob against her and her fellow halflings."

She shows Ione's arcane mark.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ok yeah he can take down that names for the "alive" list and then take down a report.

"Do you know the attacker's name? Where did this happen, how many people were injured?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was Delegate Barro! Him and a whole mob. I don't know how many he took down, I ran away and haven't seen anybody from the house since then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where's the house? Do you know the names of anyone else who was attacked there? Did you recognize anyone else in the mob?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aina gives the address of the halfling house. "And Delegates Permira and Alonso lived there too, and Alonso's family, and some of my friends and some of Permira's friends. I didn't recognize anyone else in the mob."

Permalink Mark Unread

"OK. Anything else you think we should know about this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's because he was mad about the committee he was on with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll make sure this gets to the watch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well! Shall we have dinner, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes please thank you! And I can pay rent, for the room, out of my stipend, it should mostly be in the bank, I didn't withdraw too much - though I will have to pay for the loom and the spinning wheel I rented for my friends if they burned up -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tillia breaks in-

"-yes that seems perfectly reasonable. I certainly remember how much I enjoyed my first time living independently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've still never done that, only lived with other people. I think probably because of the announcement last night the temples of Abadar will be very crowded today so I shouldn't try to get money right now though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll sort all of that out when the convention opens again, don't worry!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They go home.

They have dinner (made by a magical servant) show Aina to her room, and then both of them vanish away.

It's a large apartment, with purple velvet curtains, and deep soft leather armchairs.

It's a large room, with deep carpets, and a feather bed.

Oh wow it's so nice. Aina has great taste in cool friends.
